Energy bars and energy gels can be convenient, but they may not any better at improving endurance or performance than some lower-cost or homemade options. Energy Gels vs. Grape Jelly Energy gels are in convenient packets for squirting into.New research from Massey University in New Zealand found that athletes who consumed gels, sports drink, or a combination of an energy bar with gel and drink.”However, they use sports drinks, energy gels and bars frequently during training and competition; the sugar in these products increases the risk of tooth decay and the acidity of them increases.
In the first study (1) she compared the intake of a sports drink with the intake of a gel containing the same amount of carbohydrate plus water. The cyclist rode for two hours at a moderate intensity and consumed 1 gels per hour (with a 2:1 glucose:fructose composition) with 200 ml of water or carbohydrate drink. In both trials the cyclists.Sports Bars.
Sports bars are energy dense bars containing carbohydrate and varying amounts of protein, fat and micronutrients. Compared to gels and drinks, they have the greatest variation of ingredients and nutritional content. Different bars have different benefits for use before, during or after exercise so check labels carefully.
Nowadays you can even find energy bars that are vegan and paleo. Many bars contain protein – although not necessarily required to give you energy during your run, it can kickstart the recovery process. Cons: Unlike gels, energy bars melt in heat and go hard in the cold.Sports Drinks have been around for a lot longer than most people would think. In fact Gatorade was developed in 1965 at the University of Florida and athletes have been formulating their own sports drinks for decades.
Some of the downsides of the sports drink led the way for the development of the sports energy bar and sports gels.Sports nutrition products can be broadly divided into three basic categories; sports drinks, energy gels and energy bars; consult the information below to check out the differences between them. I’m ngl I hate the textures of gels so I take them down but I don’t like it
In a MTBer but I sometimes have a jel when I have like at home on the sofa like it’s funny I like feel much better after. I guess I’m weird.
Thankz a Lot GCN…very inspiring Videos for Old & Newbie Bikers..Keep up the Good Work..Ride Safe
You guys I love you so much, you make Cycling more exciting and enjoyable.
I noticed that the cars were on the right side of the road you must not be in the U.K
Gel abuse? They’re too expensive to be necking loads of them!
Great information! I actually hadn’t even thought of how to use gels or when to eat before or during my ride. Now I feel prepared for my next big ride this weekend! Thank you!
man, i admire you guys. you worked hard to get to where you are and enjoy yourselves!
Instructions on how to deal with gels and bars.
1) Read all ingredients.
2) Discard.
Can stand the taste of gels so I need to find a alternative for my rides
I must ask whether you’d care to share the recipe of the baked square that appears around 3mins 44 secs in the video!? It not only looks great, but also very practical to Alice and take along on a long ride! Thanks in advance:)
So essentially, “energy gels” are viscous sugar water. Soda marketed to athletes.
I think Si should wear a hairnet every day, it’s a good look mate. lol
I hate fetching for gels in the back pocket of my jersey. My hand gets all contorted trying to find and grab them, then the elastic in the pocket keeps me from pulling them out.
A crummy commercial?:) thanks GCN for all the great content
Do not use gels they are like poison in your body. Eat food.
I love Matt!! I think he’s great!! Like Martin Freeman, all the interesting funny looks he’s capable of expressing; like at 00:21 that distressed worn out shake of the head he shows! Classic!!!
I think people delude themselves into thinking gels work. Fast dumps of sugar like this mess with insulin resistance, and regular consumption creates all manners of inflammatory responses and longer term health problems. Let alone dental health. Just hydrate well with electrolytes, or added quality salt, and eat normal healthy nutritious food. On a ride, just take sources of food with a good balance of complex carbs, fat and protein. So museli/energy bars with as little sugar as possible. A gel only gives 100 cals anyway. You can easily burn 1000 in an hour of riding, so you’re talking a 6 minute boost! Dump the sugar!:) (All the above is negated by cake stops, cake stops are essential…honest!)
It´s cool that its vegan, but are not made like a pro, it´s junk food.
I now you did trained a lot end your friends too that is why I like the way the videos is made and explain to us. I kan relate.Pat from Belgium
anyone else here because they’re trying to keep their energy up for deliveroo/Uber eats orders lol.
according to stava and my suunto watch I do 80 miles a day, 5/6 days a week. just trying to feel less exhausted at the end of it.
just bought a load of hydration tablets, gels and protein. I relied on just water at first, but a lot of the other guys are using artificial stuff like this.
good advice on when to take this stuff
It’s amazing how everything is complicated with such a “simple” sport!
I gel = $1 works for 30 Minutes. 1 Banana = 25c works for 2 hours.
Some things aren’t helpful to the average person, but I think CBC should be careful how they promote pure water and ‘real’ food. If you take a look at elite athletes around the world, every single one of them will have a coaching program. Runners wear fancy shoes because they work, and nutrition plans are often part of their regimen. I’m not saying that anyone should use $500 shoes, but better shoes aren’t a bad thing. For example, when Nike tried to break the 2 hour marathon, they perfected every single advantage. That included pacers, a time in front of them, strict diets, and the best shoes they could possibly make.
Also, the studies that were shown were not very scientific. A better method would have been to use a blind study of three groups of people. The first would be a control group, who get nothing. The second would drink Gatorade or similar, and the third would have plain water. Other than that, your videos show well how much of these products we need, so thank you.
I was hoping for a quick “method” for opening the gel, and getting it in the mouth without messing your gloves/hands and bars. Mum always said I was a messy eater, she was right!
Although good vid I feel sorry for you, as you had to go to Nelson to film it.
OMG! I rode there in the summer! Cap de Formentor was epic! Any tips on routes?
One thing you forgot to mention.. Don’t throw your empty sachet on the side of the road! Put it back in your pocket and toss it in a bin when you pass one.. Don’t be a tit!
great info guys. i feel i can go out for my first tour de france now
I was mountain biking and I had whole gel pack without water
Bad idea at my young age do not try gel packs I felt horrid
is there a way to cut dose in half but still keep as a gel(“recommend”non-energy gels if available), my guts are touchy. so i use 50/50 Gatorade on long roads, which was recommended by Gatorade/Florida gator water boys themselves they stated they cut it with water/Gatorade for games, for cramping/stomach problems, there is enough electrodes already, and cuts the sugar but helps the sodium levels idk but it works. no explosive diarrhea thou. smooth pooping, no butt itching, or accidental fart Hershey kisses.
I started using Bloks chews at Flanders…much better for me and less sickly
The look of the other rider as they pass by was priceless… “who the hell?.. what’s going on?… Damn they’re fast…” all in one simple dazzled facial expression… ha haha
I’ve found GU energy gels taste great and work awesome. They don’t upset my stomach but I suppose it would vary person to person. Try “sipping” a whole gel over the course of a ride as opposed to all at once to see how your stomach will take it. Or on the way home so you’re almost there if your stomach hates it.
Can anyone recommend some gels that don’t cost a billion dollars and still work?
or just take gummy bears they contain dextrose which will replenish glycogen and therfore give more energy
That was a bit misleading. I didn’t think it was possible to do a 7 min + video on gel use but you pulled it off by making it a mini nutrition quick ref guide
Dan wearing his glasses UNDER his helmet strap!!! King of Style no More
I have found I get sick on longer rides (8+ hour rides)
I have been careful with my eating and drinking and I aim for 300 cals/hour or 30-40g of carbs/hour.
A lot of that is from gels. So I am wondering if I should be getting more of that from bars that have a component of protein in them?
Also, this might be interesting for others, while on the topic.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tricalapp.bikeapps&hl=en
the most important thing is to cram the empty wrappers in your shorts or pocket. Nothing worst than seeing discarded SIS wrappers at beauty spots on tops of hills. They can be found all over our beautiful coast roads in the south west. In our races we DQ anyone littering but for some reason there remain an arrogant few who don’t even think about it.
Maybe SIS and the other manufacturers have a part to play here how about innovation in the form of wrappers that will rot!?!
Daniel Lloyd. What are you sunglasses doing under your helmet strap! I thought you were pro!
Is it a good idea to take an emergency gel with for the case of bonking?
If you do another Gel video, remember to the people not to just throw them on the road when they finish them. Countless times I have been in the woods, or road and canal and you find these little sachets everywhere!
Could you recommend an alternate bike instead of Scott Speedster 20? I’m thkinking about buying a Speedster 20 (shi. 105 groupset)
Oh Dan, breaking one of the fundamental Velominati rules in this video. Glasses OVER helmet straps… always.
Dan rolls gels as well as all his clothing. Fair to assume he’s not a scruncher then
how much time does it take to feel the effects of the gel? for example if i need fueling for a big uphill how sooner should i choose to consume?
Baseball pitcher Bob Gibson wrote in a book that he only had asthma as a kid thus his ad saying he had asthma to promote an inhaler was misleading.
I just don’t get on with gels. I end up nauseous (once actually sick when training for a half marathon) and at a significant risk of sharting. Shot bloks are tolerable but real food suits best. On an audax I often get sick of sweet stuff completely and need to revert to savoury.
What do you think about chewables like the Clif Bloks? Do you still need to drink water with these the same a with Gels? Much easier to carry and eat on the run.
the boss is not soignee in this video at 4:40. Look how he is wearing his pair of oakleys… even Matt knows how to wear it correctly
Good insight into gels but lads think you’ve missed a trick by mentioning the importance of taking your wrappers home. You see far to many gel wrappers by the side of the road. Maybe companies could create a biodegradable wrapper???
That cyclist trailing behind in the video at 1:00 could definitely use some gels.
… come on where do you find some of these people… I did not know there was that much sugar in Gatorade… you can taste the sugar in it… but my fav is red Gatorade…
Dan your point about holding the gel in your mouth before swallowing is a good idea, your saliva has an abundance of amylase the enzyme which breaks down carbohydrates into glucose. Not just the boss of cycling but the boss of biology too.
Loved the back log comment, actually made me laugh, classic British sense of humour.!
During the intense heat of summer, gel cramps are constant threat. I discovered the osmotic benefits of “Pedalyte”, or the infant fluid replacement. It is less dense than conventional fluid drinks, and it feels like it gets absorbed instantly.
I use honey instead of gels…they look the same and you can get them in 0.5kg package. But that wouldn’t be good for mr. Matt because glass jars aren’t exactly impact proof…
I found it difficult to focus on the topic with Dan’s helmet straps overtop of the glasses.
Me: sees sports drinks/energy bars in store
Also me: i kinda want that
Me again: nah, i already deal with my ADHD, i don’t need more energy
Where are they? it looks nice in the winter sun outside a cafe.
Dan I’m sorry to nitpick but ‘reverting back’ is redundant the word ‘revert’ means ‘to return to’ so simply saying ‘reverting to a gel every half hour’ already conveys the meaning that you are aiming for.
I use gels and special bar only on sportive ride. In most situation, I don’t have any stress to ingest carbs, I can easily slow down. Also it’s way cheaper.
Dan has his sunglasses UNDER his helmet straps?! Time for a How to wear your sunglasses like a pro refresher
EF Pro Cycling posted a good energy bar recipe. A little sticky but I’m working on making it more jersey pocket friendly.
I get 20cc syringes and fill with Honey. Quick, easy and the syringes are reusable.
At face value, a layman reader may not actually understand what, say, hydrogenated palm oil or monodicalcium phosphate is as per reflected on the ingredients list of food products.
It seems that many of consumers really do not care about the specific contents of what they put into their bodies. Probably (even most likely), these consumers believe everything that they see & hear from the ads.
Take the case of Milo. I saw an ad of it being promoted as a “nutritional energy” drink. But come to think of it is it really a nutritional energy drink as the manufacturer claims it to be? Or nobody asks such a question anymore.
Great video again Dave. Laughed at the facial expression evaluating tastes.
These are lovely when made trouble is you end up eating them at home.
Can you also say ” He wor a great baker our Dad ” you’ve got the perfect accent for it.:-)
Great insight. I’m a fan of making my own bars. But if ever in a pinch and need store bought these look great.
Can we have a special beer flavored energy gel? I’d buy like 20 cases if you did
If I ever have trouble in the toilet, I’ll just rewatch that pot full of pitted dates and frozen fruit.
He discredits himself as a food scientist as soon as he says “natural foods”.
Well done Chef. This motivates me to finally try me own recipes. Nice shout out to Steve Kerr and the Warriors in SF bay area. But the real star here is Shoddy for the clever video. Thank you, I’ll look you up next time I’m about Annecy.
Definitely made the right call going with the cheetah, Shoddy. They are dead fast.
3 minutes into this video I knew this wasn’t going to happen for me.
Cheers for the video mateWill defo be giving the gel and drink a go. Good idea putting your gel in your wee one’s sachet. Would have gone snake though.
Lovely kitchen. I hope you cleaned up afterwards or there will be stress from the little lady
But what about heat? I only drink sports drinks when I’ve been in the heat all day and sweat profusely. If I don’t, I get a headache, fatigued, and crabby. I know it’s because I’ve sweated out my sodium. Then again, this is a Canadian show.
gatorade is more hydrating then water
water is only the 8th, the best is orange juice
We all know the answer. We just like people calling out others.
I did a 7 hour cycle today with regular breaks. My body actually craved fruits more than energy bars. And I only drank 2.5 L of mineral water. Next time I’ll stock up on fruits, especially oranges cos my body loves those more than muesli
Fuel(natural) is very important as you workout. Just remember that we all have different needs.
Footwear is important for what workout you plan to do if you do, not have the right floor padding needed. Jumping support, I need it.
Dan wearing his glasses under his helmet straps and not over, breaking the rules #schoolboyerror
My children think they do but they’re not worth the full price.
I would not consider the training we are seeing or even the short time these athletes spend on their event “20 secs to maybe 10 minutes”.I work outside in the heat/sun everyday, sometimes near 100 degrees but down in a deep hole there is no air/wind,we become extremely dehydrated very quickly and begin to lack energy rather quickly>>Concrete worker. When we strip the forms off the concrete it generates a fair bit of heat,i would say the heat is around 120 degrees, maybe even hotter, sweat begins to drop off our body very quickly.
This IMPACT test is a CONTROLLED test and NOT accurate what so ever.Again i work in concrete and walk around uneven ground and sometimes walking on a concrete surface.MOST like 90% of shoes and boots have terrible support and will give me a lot of pain in the knees and swollen feet and a sore back.So i utilize no particular brand but support/cushion soles i feel are good enough and it makes a huge difference. So they can do these controlled tests all they want,i test them in REAL life under REAL conditions.
god creates people:
also people: makes unhealthy drinks
god:why dont u use the water i gave you all
god:;c
3:16 I agree with this woman 100% plus I have no patience for meal prepping, cooking, chewing chicken and waiting an hour to digest the meal a tasty 400 calorie protein bar is good enough for me now that I’m dieting and busy watching youtube videos.
5:33 This was obviously filmed before Fit Crunch bars became so popular with only 6 grams of sugar, I’d be interested in an update.
I’m making these energy balls for my rides: https://www.wellplated.com/energy-balls/
I love them! They’re quick, easy and mostly made of ingredients I have at home anyway.
Sports/energy drinks make me more hungry. Is that done on purpose?
I use them in the same situations an intra-workout donut is acceptable
Short answer no
Long answer no, just drink water with lemon juice.
Tucson is my hometown and shes beutiful! Even though the weather is bi polar
These power drinks different kinds are all owned by Coca-Cola Pepsi vitamin water is owned by Coca-Cola at people that are read the labels and open their eyes
I only drink sports drink when I’m in the gym or if I’m working
Just ask the young Sudanese girl walking miles and miles in the hot dessert under the blazing sun to collect clean water, everyday!
She doesn’t need any sports drink
Parent: my kid had a good game, got him a sports drink with 8 spoons of sugar, he deserves it! Sugar is addictive more than cocaine. Focus goes out the window after sugar use. Watch Robert Lusting videos.
14:00 so to be honest im broke to own shoes for gym and now as i see that it’s much better without them i guess i’m going to continue to run without them.
One of Nike’s new shoes make you run 5% faster
-controversial in the upcoming Olympic
the main thing to take away from these marketplace videos is “keep it simple”
Gatorade is made by Pepsi-CO; with plants in Wuhan, province, China. Google it.
i feel like the drinks make you feel boosted which gives you that positive urge to do better in what your doing after you finished drinking it
The only thing they forgot to mention, is that if someone consumes too much water, that too can be unhealthy depleting the body’s electrolytes…. at least that is what I have heard from some trainers & doctors. I think marketplace should test that theory too.
I’ll buy a blue gatorade or powerade every once in a while, because i like the taste.
I drink Gatorade because it tastes good. I limit it just like any other sugary drink because I know it isn’t as healthy as water is with a good meal.
Dan, for a guy as fashionable as you I would hope you know to always wear your glasses over your straps! Even Matt knows that.
Water is healthier than gatorade for sure, but if you forgot to eat breakfast than gatorade is good because it has sugars, carbs, calories, sodium, and pottasium. So it does have ingredients that can help you hydrate and fuel your body if you need a quick boost. Gatorade is defienetly more healthy than monsters, red bulls, and rockstars.
When I was doing a lot of cycling and out for hours at time I learned to take an electrolyte pill, basically the point that was being made at the end with the triathlete on the exercise bike.
I switched to forefoot running in about 50 feet, after that it felt right and the natural way I should’ve been running my whole life.
I think as long as SiS stay away from Jon Jones, they should be OK.
Very interesting. Surprised to see so many manual tasks in the factory….thought it would be more automated
I think that this is the equivalent to “Gamer” PC components, all flashy, expensive and not much when it comes to improve performance. Glad to know you can also make a meme of “sports” or “running” products.
good shoes is the only thing that will work out of the 3 shown at the start.
energy drinks and bars dose not make you better you make your self better
Does anybody else think that SiS products taste like Laundry liquid?
The one thing I REALLY missing here is recovery time; I’m quite curious how regular workouts affect the energy burn and recovery cycle.
Drink some Yerba mate before a game or practice. See how that works
Gatorade now has a zero sugar version I switched to it since I am a diabetic it did not taste as good at first but I quickly became use to it and now enjoy it. I get tired of only water all the time and dont drink soda or anything else.
Does wearing workout clothing while eating bbq chips make you ripped? Exactly who tf made this
Damn Daniel, back at it with black sunglasses under the helmet strap!
Pro Keds sneakers, in the sixties, said they help you run faster and jump higher. My younger brother went to a Black Muslim store that said the same claim for his sneakers but my brother was unconvinced.
Coach Butch Mcadams, on Wol radio in the DC area expressed a preference of water to any health beverage.
Yeah running without shoes your knees will have major issues
That’s a lie..
you burn only 2000 calories 6 hours of walking.
I played 6 hours of basketball and didn’t have a sports drink lmao
By far my favorite engery gel/bar brand, also the only one I actually like the taste of:D
CBC, thank you for introducing such an informative rubric. Some of these episodes completely changed my mind about commercial products.
I’m a footballer and do runs regularly for fitness, and I have too agree they’re effective especially at half time for team sports. Also the texture it’ll 100 % make you cringe but after two or five times you get used too it.
Good review:)
I only drink Gatorade when I’m sick, vomiting, dehydrated and can’t keep anything down. It replenishes what I have lost in an easy way, but I dont need it for my day to day life
4:31 Wrong. Most people burn 0 calories in a ride per day. She burns 4000 calories per day just from her bike ride. She would also burn 1500 by doing nothing, so that’s a total of 5500. That’s way more than 2 time what a person burns daily.
“her electrolytes are basically identical”, and her face at 19:20 lol
I want that kind of person in my life 4:54 to 458. Encourager/Destiny Helper. God bless
19:02 betcha 98% of us “exercisers” just put ourselves in that 2%
So no one uses ketones or MCT oil(powder mix) in their bottles?
We watched a well built strong young friend have a heart attack from starpukes devils brew of caffeine sprayed addiction guaranteed coffee beans. We won’t even buy the beans at costco. Working on full sleeve tats also.
The average American consumes 22 teaspoons, or 110 grams of sugar, on a daily basis more than three times the 36-gram limit for men and the 20-gram limit for women that the American Diabetes Association recommends.
Money scame.Sugar sugar sugar. AKA Poison Poison Poison. Drink water eat right.
Wait! The bottled water contains micro-silica fibres and BP-A and God knows what else. Don’t drink anything from a plastic bottle.
Your body only knows whatvit needs these professional can not tell you what you need for your body or what your body needs
This is Billy. This a multi million dollar hype campaign.High sodium taurine whey protein sucralose glycol none of these required for healthy diet.My opinion.Sugar levels too high as well.
These rich companies can market and tell you bologna that is good for you diabeetus is around the corner
It depends of the activity. When i’m cycling for 6 or 7 hours i usually eat 3 of them, but i also have some fruits like bananas or oranges with me. And water, obviously.
Great review thanks. Running my 1st Marathon in April. Need some fuel for the second half. I’ve bought a load of these for training and the race itself. Thanks.
You: *two hours into running* “So, 2 hours in!” *looks/breathing totally normal* “gonna try this thing!..”
Me: *20 mins into running*
thanks for the review. Looking for a gel and was worried about flavor and texture. I’ll def give these a try!
I am a cyclist and like the light watery flavor and actually really like the texture. I just ordered a 50 pack.
Try wearing winter gloves all the time. Do you think ppl evolved with these kind of shoes on their foot?
Interesting surprised the process isn’t more automated TBH.
so….the caffeine ones are just about pointless according to the science, not these guys, actual science that says you should take caffeine, ie cup of coffee or tea, an hour pre ride and it last several hours….so any bar or gel with caffeine is…..pointless…
Hi guys, I’m an Italian student doing a marketing research for academic purposes. If you regularly buy energy bars, could you please respond to this super quick questionnaire? -> https://unibocconi.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_2nwbN3KH0MeiRcF. It’s just about telling us the first three attributes that come to your mind when you consider whether to buy a specific bar. Thanks a lot
Everyone has their own opinion on sports drinks and protein bars.if it helps you the best then continue with it. There will be people (CBC) that tell you that these are bad for you
Are they stable enough to just put in the pocket on the jersey? Or do you package them somehow?
They were supposed to have Matt host this tour but there are no nuts allowed in the facility.
I don’t know why, by Si looks terrified during the entire scene from 7:01 and onwards
So the most you’ll want to drink of Gatorade after an hour is around a shot. Maybe half a shot. Then just drink water, lots of it. As for protein, even stuff like jerky will do for replenishment of sodium.
Watching the part about the ingredients made me hungry. I had to pause the video and go get a bowl of CoCo Pebbles.
Why does it focus to such an extend on doping? As non-pro I’d rather like to hear tips on good nutricion, like when to use which product, advantages over “normal” resin bars, what is when released and picked up by the body, and the such.
I watched the ad before the ad. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.
Sis is the only brand I use…. simply because they are the best.
Why does it look like Si and Ben Samuels are in front of a green screen? Was there a stunt planned or something?
Sorry, but I much prefer Si’s Uber bars, plus a lot cheaper.
Another off topic lol. Do a training camp in Mallorca, ex fit 1st cat, I would join in on. It would be epic with ur fan base and expertise
LOL @ 1:48 “…it’s whole foods” as they’re pouring in maltodextrine…
Is the obsession with having nut free products actually creating more people who are allergic to nuts? This is a geuine question, does anyone know?
Company wants to turn over 50m in 2020? What about the EBITDA…
I am surprised. Almost all manual production, very little automation.
Good insight into how the bars are made only thing is I can’t stand any of SIS products I have tried nearly all of them and the taste is rank sorry guy I will stick with home made or high5 which I can take just about:-D
This vid gave me lots of inspiration! To make my own food. Yuck those were some gross looking shots.
Why is the rolling job assigned to a person and not a machine?
Shouldn’t this video been entitled: ‘How energy bars are made in a factory’?
Why is it that these gels have carbs as their main energy input but all the energy BARS are protien or LOW carb? After a long ride I have pulled up a little “cooked” and needing carbs to recover. Why is it that you can’t get carbs in ANY of the energy bars or suppliments?
Hopefully SIS will offer a gluten-free energy bar at some point
1:17, this means everything to me. I might just try these bars!!!
Yeah. SiS products are ridiculously overpriced in my country so I buy a local brand, and I make my own as well.
I used to workout at the YMCA,been on the bikes and treadmills, lifted weights.I can workout at a good pace, solid resistances for 2-3 hours and not come even close to one day at work.Matter of fact,i was going to a rehab sort of program, following my trainers suggestions for 6 months. After 6 months went back to work,i did not feel ready for work but after only 3 days i felt actually working did 100x more for my body than 6 months of training on treadmills and bikes and the weight room.
If anything,i would tend to agree with the suggestion that kids should not use Energy drinks and do not need them.
Great recipe! You could also add some lightly crushed chia or flax seeds for added crunch. Never mind the health benefits. Thank you for all the hard work!
I wish I had bikes like the gcn team I can only afford a steel frame bike.
In your experience, which is better to take during a marathon: Gu roctane energy gel or the original gu energy gel? Do you ever mix the two (i.e. take a roctane to start the race and the original every 45 mins after)? Appreciate the help.

I have to agree with this report in many aspects. And this is from my own personal experience. I had to quit drinking any type of sodas in May of this year. So not being a big fan of water LOL I turn to Gatorade. And from me too now I have seen my weight skyrocket. So I’ve had to cut out the Gatorade’s or more likely just cut them down. Down to 132 ounce per day. Where I was drinking three or four. But it will pack the pounds on you. I am a testament to that.
I was buying SIS products until I saw Aspartame in my drink mix. I can’t believe I consumed countless bottles of this crap. Back to making my own bars and using companies like Skratch Labs.
WTF, GCN makes even granola bar manufacturing worth watching and entertaining.
I carry grapes. Dont know why, but it gets me some energy. I’ve tried the gels without feeling anything.
I sure hope the had a fire protection engineer look at their facility. I am a fire protection engineer that specialized in process facilities for awhile and that type of facility has a potential to have a combustible dust issue.
My recent favorite shows are with Simon Richardson and the tours he does with various company’s doing the behind the scene videos. Very entertaining, keep up the great work you guys!!
11:05 Was it made in, or does it come from Russia? If no, then you’re probably fine.
Nice SiS tour. Being a Yank, I’m all about the Clif bar life, especially when I can reliably get them bulk in the US for $.90 (or less) a bar. I love baking, but it’s so much cheaper to buy bars vs. make them.
Hey guys, Fellow cyclist recently i chopped my finger with the cassette and need your help. I wont go into much details being that im sure u dont want me to go on and on, but if your concerned or curious PLEASE PLEASE! Visit my page! https://www.gofundme.com/my-unfortunate-accident-costs
Yep now making my own flat jack bars with dried fruit in,cheaper and I know whats in them.Nice video Chapeau.
Thanks. I am totally confident that sis are absolutely awesome products
whats the difference between a supermarket muesli bar and a sis bar?
Wow I think I’m a cave men. The only thing I’ve “invented” was water with pure dextrose powder and lemon juice for some taste.
Bought ten of these bars, two of them were moldy I was lucky to open the first moldy one before the race, because during the race I would just eat it without examining it. It was well within the best before date (about half a year remaining). So… no, thanks, I will stick to the ones I make myself.
Buy directly from SIS in bulk it’s not expensive (bet all the guys saying it’s to expensive ride carbon)
Yum, looks way better than homemade golden syrup flapjacks. And much cheaper too!
So for rides under 2 hours there is absolutely no need for any energy gels? Or? Is an two hour ride the minimum for intake of an energy bar? Or how should one calculate? If I plan to go for two hour should I then plan to take one energy gel or bar? When would one take that gel? After 2030 minutes or after one hour?
Haven’t seen the reason for any extra boost like energy bars/gels for rides up to two hours. Seems like inflation in talk about energy bars and gels that it is something you have to have an take in even on the smallest of rides? but why? The body has some energy deposit of its own? And for an ordinary exerciser rides are mostly around one to two hours. And therefore there’s really no need for energy bars/gels?!
For rides over two hours, well you aim a little higher than the ordinary exerciser I think and in all that is talked about on the GCN show and in magazines like cycling plus and so forth the focus seem to lay ahead of the “ordinary exerciser” an more to the pro, semi pro etc. That’s a little bit unfortunate I think.
But still it’s a great show!
I suspect SIS has suddenly had a spike in test certificate request.
Well si I hope they gave u more than one box as I feel a give away coming on thanks to SIS
is there any way of harnessing global farm wastage aka
when glut happens
or sun drying of pineapple bananas what ever product
this is still small production as how big it could become
aka having these options in school canteens
I’ve made Hannah Grant’s Muesli Bars from GCN and Emma Pooley’s Banoffee Pie for before rides. They both work well
Not cycling related but I need to know, what was the song at the end when Simon walks out of the door?
Great to see the quality control for the certification against the banned substances. Thanks for the insight to the manufacturing process GCN!
Hey GCN! What’s the music track playing in the very beginning?
Doesn’t look like you’ve been eating many of these bars Si, looking really lean indeed.
Never used sports drinks. I’ve always relied on water. I’ve been competing for 34 years. These things are a waste of time.
I’m sorry but… no.
A candy factory that does not hire oompa loompas can not be taken seriously!
If you heat at more then 40 degree centigrade are you destroying almost all vitamins and nutrition elements of each single component?
as a home mechanic what are the best books on bike maintenance and service??
Was it after Matt’s visit that they decided to ban nuts from the entire site?
I for one found it really interesting to know how they make them (they are my favoured brand), but also their attention to detail and quality control. Cheers Si.
So full of shit. Overprocessed, overmanufactured, full of additives…….
Dump this shit.
This vid is an ad.
Make your own bars.
But what would I know?
Ex elite rider and chef since 1964.
GCN Show, get a grip.
Who is a chocolate lover? Would you put cacao powder in yours?
Jesus fekin christ does she ever stop talking?!?!?! Just get on with it ffs!!!
Useless recipe. Couldnt think of anything worse to take on a ride, the bloody mess they would make on a ride getting them out your jersey pocket. Feck that.
Stick to bars.
how do you pack these? it kind of melts in the jersey pocket
This was good. I do enjoy a good factory tour now and then. The QC part was more interesting than I would have expected. I also appreciate the”Paid promotion “ tag. That makes a world of difference to me.
Great video. Looks like a great recipe. I’ll just leave this here for a few laughs:

Hoping to see more homemade fuel recipes! For the future, could you put the ingredients list/instructions in the description box? It is sometimes easier than stopping and pausing the video. Thanks! These look great and I love how customizable they are.
Soy protein isolate? ERGH… No thanks… No wonder I don’t eat the crap that SiS make…
I’m in Australia (somewhere very warm), so I’ll be making these today to take on bike rides with me:)
I made some bars similar to this, but added a shot of espresso!!
https://youtu.be/0coWQUzTwdk
Can you make ’em waterproof for those long swim sessions?
I’d like to some with me in my speedos
Couldn’t help but think of Pete’s schweddy balls. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPpcfH_HHH8
do you need to wrap them in plastic wrap? it could get messy on hands and pockets
Thanks Heather.
Its 28deg c in Oz at the moment, your more than welcome to visit.
I would go for some peanut powder very nice to have some videos with home made food content! Definetely going to try this after my uni exams
Who added that music when Heather was playing with the balls?? Hahahaha.
Good work again guys, nice and simple:)
I’m thinking of trying these with some condensed milk, heated to condense it further like you would for the toffee base in a bannofee pie, toffee, nuts, dates and apricots, rolled in the cacao…….
Really helpful! What would be the recommended portion for a training session?
Hi guys, I’m trying to find a nut and sesame seed free bar as allergic any ideas?? Thanks
Great nutrition for marathon between couch and fridge during winter.
Are they used only for running exercise? can i take on of these for my 30min home workout?!♀️
i use them hiking 14ers in CO. has made a massive difference in my endurance. too bad they dont make a gel for cardio. hahaha.
Hi, what kind of gel do you recommend for a 45min game. Maybe 25min is high energy. And when should is be taken?
Good point on the “find out what the race is handing out.” Thanks
Is it risky to have in a marathon all my gels (I plan to use 4) with caffeine?
I use it after my cardio session right before lifting weights is that good?
Looking at SIS Isotonic gels it seems they contain no sugar, but some other carbs. How do they work? What are they delivering to the muscles? How long do they take to work? Are SIS suggesting you can use this gel instead of water when they say “doesn’t need to be taken with water”? Thanks.
Hi there just want to ask if which is better energy gel is it SIS or GU gels?
“made from whole foods” camera shows a load of chemicals and powders
Hey thanks for the vid.
While testing different gel brands… would you mix brands so during training you start with the weak one at first and finish with the strongest with caffeine, or would you always stick with one brand per race?
Hey there. You think this is good for crossfit endurence workout??
Can i use that energy gel for basketball game? I have been playing bball everyday for 1 month (4-5 hour sessions) and now i feel weak and cant get out all my energy when shooting the ball. Is a gel to much for basketball?
Bare in mind that your body will also use fat stores while riding and by using different cadence, muscles and breathing techniques along your ride you can influence and teach your body to be more efficient at burning carbs as well as fats. A very good point though is if you didn’t know the reason for your stomach cramps now you know.
When is it a good time to take the gels when running, let’s say half a marathon for example?
Not a runner but use Gels on my long bike rides……I too thought OH MAPLE BACON!!! THATS GOING TO BE AWESOME……..boy was I wrong hahaha.
