And here I am trying to complete a challenge where I train for one in 30 days. See if I live here: https://02ultra.wordpress.com
everyone is talking about negative comments but i don’t see any
Lot more runners are doing keto diet because it more dense fuel from fat and with out the side effects of high glucose and carbs. Little known fact is that glucose is a terrible fuel source. It good for short burst but in long term it’s damaging. So fat is far better fuel for the body and it actually preferred by the body and brain.
So glad i found you guys. I just did my first marathon and totally screwed myself by not hydrating properly, I crossed that line and got my finisher medal but it was a total struggle.. I love you guys channel, it’s full of so many good information. The next one I do I’m crushing it..
Awesome dude and Altra make amazing trail running shoes
Why would you subject yourself to going 100 miles on foot in a 60hr time limit. That’s a really stupid goal
I saw a group of cows walking upside down once, but yeah I guess the scenery was nice
can anyone tell me in what month is this race and whats the exact location?
How do you maintain muscle mass as a runner? What’s the limit of miles for someone who wants to keep the muscle? 5k should be fine right?
miss piggy and a stick-figure telling me how to be my best??? no thanks, i willl walk my own path.
That’s strange, I’ve finished somewhere between 10-15 ultras, and I have many friends in the community. Yet I’ve only ever heard of a few isolated incidents of vomiting and nausea. Never experienced it myself. Would be good to see what kind of ultra runner survey is behind that data, what was their sample.
In any case, it’s important to note that the races mentioned here are some of the toughest in the world (e.g. Badwater and Barkley). One does not simply go there without many years of experience and gradually more tougher ultras races behind one’s belt.
Also, like someone else mentioned in the comments, the key ingredients to a good ultra experience are:
1) proper pacing (i.e. knowing your pace, not going too fast, never pushing yourself too hard),
2) fueling (eating things your body can digest easily, such as bananas, sports bars, sports gels, sports drinks and similar I mean wtf was that about pasta, food like that is only ever served after the race),
3) hydration (knowing approx. how much you sweat per an hour when running, and therefore running with a backpack which will usually hold anywhere from 0.7L, for the world’s top ultra athletes, to 2L of water or sports drink, for people like me, in special reservoirs).
And as for sleepiness realistically, no-one really has to start worrying about that until they are doing races which come close to 24h in length.
What a beautifull video. Contrats to Elin and sure that she will keep on doing ultras and pushing herself far as possible. Also a beautifull testimonial of love
Go on an ultramarathon for what a trip no ty I’ll just trip on lsd seems safer in the long term
Beautiful, just beautiful video!! Really inspirational:) Thanks for sharing!!
This sports really need super stamina and best teams works!
Thank you for this video. I just signed up for my first 50k in 2020.
His skin looks weather beaten like some Artic explorer from 1912.
I’m hoping I make this my first completed hundo. I attempted LovIT 100 back in February of this year and had a hip flexor go sideways on me at mile 26 which led to severe ankle tendonitis at mile 58 (I pushed on walking to mile 64 to finish with a 100K result). Four years ago I was barely doing 1 road 5K a month and here I am attempting a bucket list ultra.
Ultra marathons are so bad for you. No idea why ppl do them. Especially now that it’s so popular someone saying they did a marathon is like saying saying you road a a hover board or something or do cross fit. No one really cares. Plus you produce so much free radical damage you arnt strengthening your body you are just tearing it apart. But well…have fun I guess.
Enjoyed the video I’ve signed up for a 50K in 2020 and will use some of these tips for sure.
Ultra runners are insane! Check out YouTuber fulltiltward. This guy completed the Moab 240 mile race in a little over 3 days with just a few hours of sleep. At the finish line he was still happy and talkative…he asked some people if they wanted to grab a beer and then he did Acro yoga with some lady. Craziest shit I’ve ever seen. Didn’t even think that was possible before let alone someone actually enjoying the experience.
I want to know that pain. I just signed up for my first ultra. It’s only a 50k but I’ve never even done a marathon. Maybe when my kids are older, I can train for a 100.
Do not forget to stretch. You’ll regret it. Heavy training should be accompanied by lengthy stretch routines. 1:1 training and recovery
I swear, I can get lost running around a 400 m track. If I ever decide to train for an ultra, there’s a good chance I could start out intending to run for 5 hours and end up staying out there for 5 days after missing the same few turns thousands and thousands of times over:)
I don’t go to the gym, but recently I did 1/2 mile jogging on a treadmil, only cardio being rental bikes
Keep in mind i’m completely out of shape
I just wanna get to running 25 miles comfortably
I’m also getting into calistenics
after that I might branch out to other sports
Parkour, MMA, Mountain climbing etc etc
Great video. Volunteer at this year’s Western States, had a great time.
Awesome video. I’m training for a marathon in March 2020, not only do I know I have it in the bag I have already started looking for ultra trails later in the year. Super inspired thank you
Unlike commercial videos, I think the emotions and fatigues were very clearly captured in this video. Excellent work! I am running a half marathon on the 24th of November this year.
Any suggestions for me?
The ending was cute, am going to register myself a race now. Lol
Do everyone who does ultra runs have to look like this guy? Looks like a POW from world war 2. Very unhealthy and weak.
They do it for competition,….but the commandos…they do it for daily basis,..take that one…
Good video. Nike may have too low drop for the beginners. If someone is thinking about 50k trail running then during this six months of preparation I would suggest taking part in one race a month for example in flat half-marathons and for sure one mountiain trail with the lenght about 35 km.
Hallucinations and a nice view hmmm sign me up! Deadass finna be my new hobby:D
Joe: “When you get runners high it’s like a small hit of DMT”
I’ve ran my whole life and always preferred simple 5Ks or sprinting. I’ll take a quick 18 minute 5K over exasperating myself with ultra running, especially anything near 100 miles. Kudos to Zack, but ultra running long term is a good way to accelerate inflammation in the body there’s studies on the harms of ultra running long term. Not necessary to be fit and healthy, but I guess it’s novel. To each their own.
So 1 millimeter over a marathon is an Ultra-Marathon? Sweet.
What, no discussion on maceration of the feet? That’s the kinda pain you have to create a relationship with. BAHAHAHAHA!
Not all ultras are trail marathons. Some tend to be just timed races that run consistent loops for 12,24,48,72+ hours.
There’s a bit of a science to fuel intake during different ultras but not all are specifically brutal in terms of heat and elevation gain. They all have a unique challenge to it which is what keeps it interesting. I implore you to check out the results from the 24 hour world championships this past weekend in Albi, France!
I remembered trying to do a normal marathon before, I died on the first kilometre lol
This is beautiful and inspiring. I think we can all learn to push a little more in life, cheers
I don’t get why people carry stuff on their hands. Sure, you get the thing that slides in nicely, but from a inertial standpoint…. I’d rather the mass be closer to, well, my center of mass and not at one of my extremities.
Fantastic!!!! Come to Australia and film my first Ultra. What a tribute to love of your life
Kudos to those humans who have a desire to do this. I have no desire to run more than 4 or 5 miles
Can baking soda be a source of sodium if to drink it with water?
I don’t consider any race longer than a marathon an actual race. they’re for runners who couldn’t make it in the marathon.
how long did it take you? took me 6 hours and 15 min the first time. then 4h 39 min
Wow great Elin! huge congrats (from a person who wants to do her first ultra also:D ) and huge compliment to GΓΆran as well for this video it was like a movie, so nice to watch and really well captured and story telling:)
This is suicide squad. You wanna die while being considered a hero? Just run a marathon
I would LOVE to see the female equivalent of this from y’all. ie: women’s shoes, sports bras, hair bands, PMS and running…..ect.
Thank you, this was really great!β€οΈ
At this point the US is just being a little kid refusing to convert to the metric system SMH
I’ve always found that you need to ensure you can more or less cover the distance in a single weeks training miles that you want to run in one go. That format has always served me.
This reminded me of my first ultra. Which was a 50 mile run, well it was listed as 50 mile but I made a wrong turn and did 55 miles. During the race I said this was the last time I would do this but four months later I was thinking of doing it again just like Elin! It is hard to explain but I know what she is feeling. I have now done four ultras and have one more scheduled in a month. Goran you need to join her.
A bit late here, but have you guys ever seen a high school or college Cross Country team, or Googled Eliud Kipchoge?
Hi, Alex, do you monitor your pulse during the 100 mile run? If you do, do you adjust your pace according to your pulse?
This is amazing, the amount of spirit this must take to push yourself that hard
I have run several 5-6+ hour trail runs, and one formal 36-mile trail ultramarathon. Only the elite run all of the courses. The middle-pack people like me walk (hike) all the uphills, and run only the flats and the downs. It is time on feet for most middle packers, not speed. It is never about speed. An average finish time of a 50-mile trail ultramarathon can be 14 minute miles.
look at a ultra marathoner and look at a sprinter. which body would you prefer? HIIT Training spikes HGH more than any other activity and will promote muscle growth, plus it takes less time!
Apostle Paul: I have fought a good fight, I have finishedΒ myΒ course, I have kept the faith:
Generally this is people have not prepared correctly. The greatest ultra marathon runner of all time Yannis Kouros states its not about the training you do, its about your mental ability. In fact before Yannis became the worlds best, a 62 yo won an ultra marathon race in my home town and a few years later, Yannis completely destroy the field in the same race. If a 62 yo can win it, its about your mental ability and they both did it on no sleep for the first 35 hours
Taking out the garbage from imaginary homes is a small price to pay for glory.
I recently upped my run from 2km to 3km. I was proud of myself until I seen this
Yes! When I was doing upper Yosemite falls I kept thinking, this suck, I want to stop and then the next day, I thought well maybe I’ll do it some other day..
I didn’t train & completed 3 100km trail run but suffered a lot.Now I want to train for UTMB 171km if balloting get through as I got 15points now.Wish me lucks
Hi all. I’m an ultra marathon runner and decided to make a youtube channel in hopes of sharing my journey. If you could take a moment to check it out that would mean a lot. https://youtu.be/LwJ9sU2UO6U
Fascinating interview. The technical planning of every level is intense!
Running uphill is the craziest thing I can imagine in my life right now… it’s like noooo wwaaaaay I can be that strong
Im 187cm.. 122kg.naturally muscular.and can’t run more than 15 km…I think running for long distance need light frame body
My dad told me about 6 day bicycle races, in Chicago. This brings back the recall of it.
Actually way back in the day, New York had the New York 1000 and was seeing who could do 100 miles a day for 10 days. This is some awesome stuff!
Waow so emotional and inspirational! You can feel at the same time the difficulty of the challenge and the satisfaction of doing it. Congratulations to Elin and thank you for the great video:)
Ps. Which shoes is she wearing? I did my first trail last summer and really want to go into it, the addiction is starting ^^
Everytime i complete a long distance run I just felt amazing
I run 66 miles ascend 770m time 11h 27minutes, it was my own race from my house in Gloucester Uk to Chesptow Wales and way back, I would like to participate in the 100 miles race some day
All that beauty and vistas and he has a pair of head phones in…..
Favorite part is you signing up for the next race 3 hours after finishing. Good on ya!
Lets not forget Zach went on a year later to break and hold the new 100 mile record on track. The man is superhuman, it’s nice and humbling he considers himself “an average runner” but he is truly an animal!!!
I do ultra marathon every year. I walk more than 100km a year. Does that count?
such a great job well done! and you’re right, 50K is just a start.i know that for myself. last year i did 80k and going to do 160 in september and 250 in march. but still a great job and the race looked amazing. was it Norway? greetings from holland
Hello, im starting CC practice in a week. Any before tips for me? By the way I watched the live stream about food today and it was great!!
wish you hadnt said tortilla chips, i have a problem and this video has enabled me
People are negative because a) Jealous or b) know nothing about the human body. Or both. Haters gonna hate no matter what.
About to run my first 60 k, taking notes. Hope I don’t die after this event
i got only the best advice there is for 99.9% of people, just DONT DO IT, ultrarunning is just not healthy, it has detrimental effect of your body no matter how well trained you are. You taking years of your life, your joints will not thank you when older. People just overdo everything nowadays. Just my 2 cents.
Yes, he’s unhealthy, well done comment section. You all have eyes.
He’s a marathon runner, wtf do you expect?
Well done, Elin. Goran, loved this story, which was amazingly well-told and filmed! Thank you.
Great job on the run (and the film!). The only thing harder than an ultra must be doing an ultra while filming it.
I would be physically in pain driving this distance, legs would be cramping with lower back stiffness
Rogan would lay an egg if he found out the greatest ultra runners are vegan
Number 1 rule! Don’t get totally smashed the night before a 100km race and wake up severely hungover and with 3 hrs sleep then missing your taxi then having to walk 7 miles to the start like I did
A great video and an inspirational run from Elin I’ve done a trail half-marathon and I’m so tempted by a 50k but worried about the amount of training involved! The video’s got me thinking again……ββοΈ!
Thanks I am hoping maybe first race is a 100mile. I watched some YouTube videos and figured it will be a good way to quit smoking. I already quit heroin and I lived in a broken down car for 4 years in Minnesota. I choose running because my sister who is a marathon runner referred to a runner as just a half marathon runner. Now I have to run an ultra and refer to someone as just a marathon runner jokingly of course and to teach a lesson. At least I am doing better than I thought I would, my fourth run I ran 15miles at a 7:43 pace.
Why for God’s sake do you use Kilometers? Don’t tell me because science you called losing eyesight hell gate syndrome… Which is not the scientific term?
You forgot to mention the muscle breakdown known as rhabdomyolysis.
Congratulations… I just did my first 50 this year too!!! Feels great huh?!
I’m a 48 Australian now living in Singapore. I’m a runner, mother of 3 and need your help to please to be accepted for adventure race FjΓ€llrΓ€ven Polar https://youtu.be/DNpm5vNUKaQ
As an ultrarunner with an autoimmune disease, I do it because I know that my time is probably more limited than most. I want to get the most out of life and see what my body can take before I no longer have that luxury.
Went to order the UCAN but there’s a $5.95 shipping charge…
I signed up for 50km this coming December. It’s my first 50km run and excited but a bit nervous since i usually have problems with cramps on long distance run .
Those Ultras are brutal. Ran my first a few years back when I was 19. First 38k or so was not so bad but I didn’t feel comfortable. After that I crashed. Having to lap a golf course like 14 times in the freezing cold wasn’t so fun anymore. But I think afterwards, within the first minute of finishing, you realize it was all worth it.
If your running every day you are not going hard enough on certain days. Just my opinion. While recovering from long runs do bike rides. It’s the stress of running that takes recovery time which is close to non existent with cycling.
Well done Elin! Really can relate to how you were in your video. I ran my first 50km in Taupo in this past October 2019 (3 weeks ago) and it was an epic day out!
Hey! Thanks for the video! Very cool stuff. I was wondering how can someone with a full time job find the time for longer run training except over the weekend? I could technically run for 4 hours but i woul br either too tired to do it every day after work, or couldn’t wake up next day for work.
Long distance running does some AMAZING things but you have to do it to understand. The mindset is like being high
Do you rest occasionally or intentionally? Thanks and good luck!
He didnt even look tired when he crossed the finish line…. Drugs!
They will kill you if tried in hot weather conditions. Marathon should never be tried in hot or dry ground. Only good for forests and rainy. It can kill military men in one day.
Really great video. I could feel the pain as I had recently done my first 50km too
This video is awesomeee. You both are great. Thank you Alex for sharing your stuff
They are on whole new level. With strong will you can do everything!!!
Right… enjoy the view while you’re sleepy, hallucinating, damn near blind, and suffering stomach issues.
Sign me up!
what is his diet, and what supplements/herbs does he take to maintain that stamina for 50 miles or more?
There isn’t much data on ultra runners because they are very few. Any statistics or people saying they know what the benefits are plain lying
It takes not being fast enough in 26.2 miles vs the Africans to be an ultra marathon runner.
Wow did I do a ultra marathon in my game I must be the best in the world
What a beautifully made video. I’m playing with the idea of ultra, and she really motivated me.
Apart of the Air Force. Is the carnivore diet sustainable for heavy training / intense cardio and conditioning?
I want the ultrarunning stamina, but not the ultrarunner’s body. Stick figures belong on drawing paper, not in the real world.
This video is awesome, very inspirational . Am looking at taking part in an ultra so this definitely gives a good insight
Quality video, found it really informative. Have subscribed at will check out some more.
Congratulations!!! That was awesome to see the ups, downs and specially the success. Not to mention the willingness to sign up for another one. Amazing!
And motivation from my movies π
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCREYtoQH17LBOoFD8f5dVQ
Thanks for letting us use your video for our academy award winning film!
Awesome video!! You edited it very well. As a trail runner myself, I could definitely understand her emotions. I have yet to reach ultra trail status though.
Thank you for documenting her experience.
How does the 50 miler compare to an Ironman event? I’m tempted to train for a 50 miler, but man, running is hard. I’ve done 3 full IM’s, and many half fulls. Thoughts?
Amazing shooting.. Beautifull picture and congratz with the result of your first ultra
I had a much better long run recently when I turned my run log app to slilent. Not having updates on my pace helped stopped the instinct to beat my last run. I didn’t bother with music either and felt more ‘in tune’ (pardon the pun!) with what my body was doing.
HAA I don’t belong here. I jus wanted help on running 1.5 in 13 min
It’s dark and bumpy you never know what you’ll encounter….. MOMMY! ;P
Did my first ultra (50k) in 6 hours 12 minutes in May 2019! Not the fastest but can outlast most!
I used to be addicted to running, running at least 50 miles a week. Never even competed, just did it because i loved running. All i thought about at work was going for a run after it. Everyone thought i was crazy, even i thought i was crazy, all this running for nothing more than personal gratification, it was masochism. But that’s got nothing on an Ultra marathoner, those guys/gals are just on another level of masochism.
every now and then ill go to the end of my driveway to get the mail
Opening shot with ghosts running in the dark is so cool. Not at that level yet but will try it.
A local Prescott, Arizona man ran 800 miles of trails in 16 days. That is 50 miles of trail running, day in and day out, for 16 days. He holds the FKT for the Arizona Trail (north to south).
I admire 100milers, I enjoy running also but I couldn’t put my body trough that torture
Used to think running was for bitches, till i went for my first 10 miles.. I was singing a different tune by mile 6 & 7
Really enjoyed the story. The camera work and post production was awesome. Great job.
At 3:45 he says once the pain dwindles down u want to do another one…..I deadlifted 335 for 3 reps when I was 17 and hurt my back lol and said no weights anymore just calisthenics. Now I’m 22 deadlifting 505 for reps and I love lifting x)
Ultra and heroine are two of the unhealthiest things in world
About the weight training for strength: How do you mix it in with your runs? Do you work out before or after? Or separately? Especially legs?
All the debate here around the negative health implications of ultra running are interesting. I’m no expert but my take is two fold: 1) I’ll take the quality of life and health risks associated with being very active vs the health impacts of a sedentary lifestyle any day. 2) Physical health is only one aspect. I find myself mentally healthier and happier the more I run/train/race. For me that type of benefit outweighs any unproven physical risks.
I started off with a 24 hour run and said I’d stop after that and literally two months later tried my first 100 miler lol
I thought Courtney was bad ass by doing 100 mile in 17 hours and this dude does it in 11 hours 19 minutes! He’s insane,
We need long distance backpackers on the show! Andrew Skurka, Anish, or Legend!!!!
A long run is the meat and potatoes of an ultra marathoner. Lots of A-Fib and overuse injuries in older runners.
the unexplainable sensation to run in the dark..mesmerizing…thank you for this short film…
Ultra is my dream. I was preparing for my first half marathon and month before the race I broke a leg. So now I need to do some exercises and just wait a couple weeks till I will run again. Icaaan ‘t wait I love it
Go and check out the Comrades Marathon in South Africa…its 90km…give and take….this year the first lady came in in just under 6hours…the men finish the race in under 5hrs30min…now that is called untra running!!! There is a big difference between running and just plodding along for 20hrs or longer!!
I did CCC in 108km around mont blanc last 2017 it was one of the worst weather for the race’s history. After descending Grand col ferret and reaching Champex lac around 70k into the race, my eyesight went all white. I had to stay inside the station for 3 hrs until my vision got a bit better which costed me my buffer time, good thing I was still able to finish the race. No food intake after 50km
These people dumb I told people these marathons be killing people! Anybody telling people to run a marathon is a crash dummy! I will never run one
Really awesome off you bought! wish i meet some one to start up with so that really cool well done.!!! I run little but its so cool and inspiration to see these videos, love it:)
Just finished my first Leadville 100 and had to rewatch this video for the 20th time. So inspirational and still gets me choked up!
Hopefully running a 200 miler next year. The Bigfoot 200… Pray for me
I was an alcoholic changed my life and decided to become an ultra runner at first I was dying at mile one now I can run 8 miles nun stop that’s huge for me I will get there to prove my self I’m not a loser
They are all sick,,,,,moving like turtles for so many hours,,,,,yet taking our tax money to support them on welfare. SAD
training at that altitude I bet a regular marathon at sea level wouldn’t even leave the runners breathing hard.
Mario mentioned fueling every 20-30 mins. I am curious what he would do on a road race in comparison. I am adjusting my fueling from road to trail. I tried UCAN recently for my first marathon and trail race after seeing on TRE. Love the electrolyte powder. It worked sooo much better than Gatorade and better on my stomach as well. Thanks TRE and UCAN!
The difference in surface really does make a differenceafter my first road marathon: couldn’t walk for days. First trail marathon: I was completely fine because of the varied terrain, softer ground and slower pace.
Very cool, appreciate the time! I’ve got my first (two) 50s in the schedule for this spring. Getting excited! Run on!
Loved this! Leadville is my dream race. As long as my knees don’t give out π
Just ran my 3rd marathon this past weekend! I’m addicted. I may not be very fast but I love it!
Doing a second trail marathon in November. So excitedwant to quit my job so I can run all day, but I can’t afford that unfortunately.
1:24 I always thought running and doing exercise’s actually helped with digestion?…..
Awesome video! I’ll probably never run a tough 100 out west but it’s cool to watch vicariously through the eyes of these runners.
I really loved this short film in so many ways. Thank for making it!
Had to find the music so had to share in case anyone enjoyed it as much as i did Helios Halving The Compass (Rhian Sheehan Remix)
I’m 16 years old and I want to run a 100 mile race before I turn 18 (mid September 2021). I’ve ran 2 marathons so far and I’m signed up for a 50k in December.
I never done a ultra marathon, I never want to do it but now I got the idea about 60k long ultra in Monte Negro. It will be great.
For nutrition ditch the carbs…switch to the Keto Diet and get into ketosis. Do the research…it benefits long duration activities. It makes long runs easy. Carbs benefits more of the explosive movements. The science is there…not sure why people continue to load up on carbs unless you like to eat those foods but understand you are making it harder on yourself…performance wise.
thanks for the tips…….running the SkyUltra Race in the Dolomites this summer….baptisim of fire
Watched it again. Great job Elin! I am thinking maybe I should start runing. I mean maybe start from 1k.
$1000 for a ultra marathon, The prize pot for the Dublin marathon is β¬12,000 each for the men’s winner and the women’s winner
Nice video:) I ran my first trail marathon in Germany few weeks ago, I smoked weed the night before, it was raining the whole day, I was soaking wet and I didn’t think about taking water and food, I thought aid stations would be enough… Well I won’t lie, it was hard, but it was also one of the best experiences of my life haha! Looking forward to take part at a 60 to 80k race next year:)
Forrest Gump: That day, for no particular reason, I decided to go for a little run. So I ran to the end of the road. And when I got there, I thought maybe I’d run to the end of the town. And when I got there, I thought maybe I’d just run across Greenbow County. And I figured, since run this far, maybe I’d just run across the great state of Alabama. And that’s what I did. I ran clear across Alabama. For no particular reason I just kept on goin’. I ran clear to the ocean. And when I got there, I figured, since I’d gone this far, I might as well turn around, just keep on goin’. When I got to another ocean, I figured, since I’d gone this far, I might as well just turn back, keep right on goin’.
Awesome story, so inspiring. Thanks for share it. Greetings from Brazil!:)
Y’all I’m not kidding, I can’t even run a mile without wanting to throw up. I’m really trying to get into running. Pls give me tips. I’ve been running 2-3 times a week for 1.8 miles
Props to the cameraman, film composition very good, cinematography, outstanding!
Why would you organise a marathon that hardly any human can make it and in the hottest of weathers. I think this is the work of Thanos.
Furthest I’ve run is 9miles and I can run 16min 5ks. I’ve never had any intention of running further because 9miles to me is like hell, even at a slow pace haha
Thanks for the video! I’m a marathoner, but I’m feeling the itch to complete a 50K this year.
A fantastic account of a great achievement. I like that you have kept it so real. I’m 54 years old and have run 5km to 12km fairly regular for over 10 years. People around me are doing longer distances so back in August I entered a 10 mile road race which took place October 10th and thats how long I trained for it. After 8 miles it was so so hard I can’t begin to understand what it takes to do an ultra. Since then I ran 11.6 miles 1 week later with 1 energy gel. Then Yesterday with 2 energy gels I did a half marathon on my own. Again, the pain, the mental torture…….I don’t think I could have got to 17 miles. Maybe 15? I really don’t even think 26.2 miles is on the cards. Well done!!
Great video! How would you train for a ultra marathon if you live on the prairies
I had the same story. I ran a 21k on street, thought about a marathon, but hit the trails more often to enjoy the time and outdoors. I didn’t care about time, just views and having fun. Skipping down technical trails. It was the first time i had fun running 21k and didn’t realize i ran that much. I ran my first 50k without a race. Just trails having fun, topping up water in little streams. I had so much fun that day, just running.
Thinking about finaly joining some race with support stations. I think it will be a nice experience to run with people.
What if you run 43 kilometers, does that count as ultramarathon?
Do you run the full distance before the race day or close to it. I’m worried about doing too much and getting burned out
Very nice video and Norway is magnifecent. Hope to be able to run once a 50 K there as well
You’re out of breath. Your legs feel like they’re on fire. Your shin is especially tight, so tight you feel like they’re going to tear. Your mouth dry and shirt wet. You feel emotional, you feel like crying, you feel tired. Everyone and everything tells you to stop running. But there is all but one voice who tells you to keep going. To keep pushing. It gets only that slightly easier. But it gets a lot more satisfying. To know you could run that far, you can do anything you want in life. Mind over body.
I eat Pop Tarts… Cookie Dough flavored Pop Tarts. They rule. Then I do some heroin and relax sippin Cokes and smoking ciggie after ciggie until I pass out. I wake, and restart it all over again. Is that an unhealthy lifestyle? Eh, so what. It’s fuckin fun. These fitness freaks are like aliens to me.
The ancient tribesman and cultures would do these types of runs all the tine
https://youtu.be/UhjBGrniv9I This is a good friend pf mine in Ft Worth Rene. Ultra runner known as the king of the trail. Endurance is his game.
I applaud you all There is hope for humanity, when i see people like this.
What is this “bonk” y’all keep mentioning? I’m being serious; I get injury terms, but “bonk”?
I just ran a half marathon and it was terrible I couldnt even imagine a ultra marathon let alone a normal marathon
Thank you
Packed information, I’m currently running daily, and thinking about entering a race here in the UK.
Thanks again
Great video and incredibly inspiring. Thank you for sharing your experience.
wow; that’s what I do now…..with no race in mind / just because I love running…
Might be a stupid question but how do runners know exactly where to run on trail? Are 50/100milers pretty well marked off so runners don’t get lost as they run check point to check point or do they need to have a GPS enabled watch (or something else) that has the track marked off for them? Thanks
Thanks for the advice. I’m a 56 year old man. Out of shape but getting back into it. Most I’ve ever run was 30. But for the past year I’ve moved down to Texas and am motivated to do a 50 miler in the Texas Hill Country with the support of just one or two more people. Again, thanks for the advice and wish me luck: )
The first tip is DON’T DO THIS. These idiots that run are all screwed up later in life with horrific arthritis and joint issues.
Stick to low impact cardio like rowing and biking.
Look at this emaciated sickly looking dude. It’s literally KILLS muscle to run like this.
Awesome! I am an ultra marathon runner from Brazil and I hope, you make more videos like this!! Congrats!
Eat kale, beans, eggs, and ground beef with bell peppers tacos. Easy, cheap, healthy, tasty
6 months out, 50 mile weeks to start training… We must have different definitions of a newbie. My first 50K was 2.5 months after the first day I stared running, first 50 miler was 2 months after that. I certainly did not start as a newbie with 50 miles a week with race 6 months away. This is early in your video and I hope it doesn’t discourage new runners from getting after it and taking the leap to ultras.
basically when he saw no africans running ultra then he could win. thats why
I’m 6’3 235lbs and I run 10 miles a day. I say this because for me its insanely hard. I can’t fathom the pain tolerance, training, and mental strength these guys go through
Yes! Please do more and longer running Documentaries. Thanks for doing this one!
I am a solid runner, I did 5K for 18:50, 10K for 39:02, 21K for 84:45, best 42K for 3:23, worst 42K for 3:59. 42K hurts a lot and it is not something that I am good at, I say to my self I do not want to do it, but I always do it when I get a chance.
Traditional velodrome bikes do not have brakes Joe. And only one speed/gear. They are as light as possible and built for speed.
I’m training for my first ultra so this was super helpful. Thank you!
Very nice cinematography! Has she decided to run another ultra?
How many days do you take to complete 4,345 km run?? How do you do the run, continuosly without a break or with intervals in between?? Is it an individual race or a passing baton relay??
Such a great interviewer. Able to dial it up or down depending on the person. Fear Factor probably helped in getting the timid ones to open up and the MMA probably helps with getting the loud ones to sit down, son!
Casey Hill do you sweat too much, is dehydration a regular problem? How do you deal with it on an ultra?
This is my ultimate goal. My dream. I am 35 and about 50-60 lbs. overweight. Back in my 20’s, I completed several marathons and even won best in my age group once. It’s hard to recognize the girl I once was, but I’ll find her again. I’m a week back into running and renewing my love for it. A 100 is my goal for when I turn 40. These athletes are truly inspiring. Great video.
Thnx for the tips. I’m doing a 50k on a weeks notice. Gonna have to white knuckle through that shit
Updatetook me a little over 8 hrs to do roughly 31 Miles
The slower you, are the longer distance you pick. An elite marathon runner will not run an ultra marathon, an elite miler will not run a marathon, a quarter miler will not run a mile, a 100 meter guy will not run a quarter mile. If you are not a good runner at all you, do a triathlon. What a great world! Something for everyone!
My first trail running was 4km and i am 17 yrs. but now my longest trail so far is 37k with 1380ft elevation
Sometimes I skip runnning day for weight training but i feel like I want to go out and run but I want to do the weight trainning also. Is it safe to do both in the same day?? Thanks.Great tips though. enjoy it.
Great video. Why is something that makes you feel so miserable, so addicting? At some point in every ultra I’ve run, I swear I’m never signing up for another. After my last 50k it was just over 24 hours and I signed up for an 80k. How dumb is that?:)
The last time I looked like him I was in high school btw I m 24 and weigh 166 pounds
I’m training for my first marathon and typically stick to flat roads when training, but he makes a good point about it localizing your muscles. I’ve gotta star trail running and get the muscles used to the incline/decline variations. Great interview
I’m sure someone’s mentioned alrdy, but arctic 6633 is like 380miles of madness. Barkley IMO takes 2nd place. Apparently the self-transcendence race in N.Y. is over 3000 miles tho! Cheers to all interested in this ultra-stuff.. pretty sure it’s gonna save the world somehow! =D
I’m an average marathon runner and I can’t explain why I enjoy running them. Ever since I did my first one I feel like I have to keep doing them or else I feel like I’m feeling myself if I don’t.
At least ur not heavy, I jog and is weigh 250lbs and have join pains
Great, I find the most important thing is to dial in gear and nutrition. I know of a few people who even change shoe types for 100km + races, using Hoka’s for the last part, extra cushioning.
I always thought it was pronounced “Leedville”,anyway great video!
I want to run an ultra marathon one day but I need to be older
Tip from last years 100k: make sure you can find your headlamp when it gets dark because dark means pitch black in the forrest.
Thanks for the tips! I plan to do my first trail ultra next year but still confused about the water backpack, should I get myself a smaller backpack without the reservoir or with the reservoir complete with the drinking tube on it??
Anyone experiencing bakers knee cyst?? Never had them before, have both in legs, hopefully I can stii run at 48, any remidies? Thanks. Love SF!!
Funny how all they show is running in these videos about ultras but if you look at the times they literally walked 90 percent of the race lol
That was awesome! Impossible to explain to non runners, but appreciated by those that do!
The greatest ultra marathoner of all time, Yiannis Kouros, was a vegan.
Anyone knows what/who’s music was it in the background? That created half the charm of the video.
There’s no science or formula, but there is free will. What does it take to be a stock broker? We’re all capable of amazing feats but it starts with a plan that takes full measures. Mostly suffering and pain is what lead to happiness and greatness amongst our role models.
It’ll always baffle me why people choose to hurt themselves in the stupidest ways like such endurance events. 10k is as far as anyone should ever go
Why can’t you just use miles like everybody who matters on the planet?
sounds like you really have to hate your body to run an ultramarathon
Superhuman effort. Nothing but a massive respect for these warriors.
Respect from India
As a runner I can confirm that most people pretend it’s unhealthy so they don’t have to face their laziness. If you’re running and consuming a sufficient amount of nutritious food to go along with your activity level, most people will benefit significantly from what running offers. That all said, visually this guy looks like he needs to consume more food.
As a content creator and ultra runner I really think this was very well done!
why did she change packs? I have never seen anyone do that, like ever. Although its no big deal. Getting out and doing ultra trails is totally where its at. I’ve done a few even though I am slow (which I thought was a big deal), the community doesn’t care. Getting out and putting one foot in front of another and doing something EPIC!
Runners look like kids with adult faces. Their head is too big for their body.
“you gravitate to what you are good at, and then it peaks”
what a smart comment that almost passed me
haha are you kidding me? I can run 4 miles at 6.4 on the threadmil and seeing these people run up a mountain at that pace and knowing they will run 100 miles almost gave me a heart attack, HOW DA FUCK DO THEY DO IT??
“What happens to your body when you start being physically active?”
Me: I die.
Are you aloud to run ultras barefoot? I only run barefoot now
Even a marathon cause micro strokes. I recommend the papers of doctor James O’Keefe, running too much, as anything in too much, is not good for you
If someone were forced to do this it would be a ‘crime against humanity’. If you force yourself to do it then it is a ‘noble undertaking’.
What happens to your body during an ultramarathon?
For me? Probably death lol
Bro how do they have synchronized swimming in the Olympics but not this?
Whenever I hear about ultra marathon runners I think about Terry Fox (Canadian hero for anyone who doesn’t know him). He ran a marathon every day for over 3000 miles in total. With 1 leg. And Cancer.
Awesome! and very inspiring! want to run my first 50K in Autumn. Thanks for that video
Average runner who went to states and won his first ultra that he decided to try….let’s say that’s way above average
Inspirational. I am not an ultra runner though I do a few short (sic) ones, max so far 66miles on a lap course I wonder if I have/will ever have the…. grit, stubbornness, single mindedness, x factor, madness… to attempt something like this?
Why was the thumbnail girl so attractive. Do you become sultry when ultramarathoning?
Marathon: 26.2 miles
Ultra marathon: anything more than 26.2 miles
Me: Runs 26.3 miles
Also me: I’m an ultra marathoner
Me: Watching this video.
My body: (laughs) C’mon, who are you kidding? You?.. Running?
(Then we both laugh and proceed to watch more videos lying down in bed)
Why does that woman runner have a black strap below her knee?
Congraz! Nice video but 50k is not an Ultra. 50 miles maybe & above. Good luck on y next steep.
Well done Elin!!! I love this video so much, you are such a lovely couple. My dream is to run an Ultra, training starts after Christmas 2019!!!
Zach Bitter is an incredible athlete and guy. Really fun to follow his races and keto advice.
I’m one month away from my first ultra which has a 6 hour time limit. I’m in a running club with a bunch of experienced ultra runners. They had me working up to being on my feet for 6 hours and this race starts at 7pm so I’ve done a 6 hour training run in the dark. And with each 6hr practice run I’ve done more miles.
As a former Lifetime Fitness HQ employee, I’m sad to see they purchased this as well as many other endurance events. The CEO, Braham, began a relationship with a trainer at HQ gym, she became his assistant instantly and now all his butt buddies are working their way up his pants and around the table. Gross.
I’m training for my first ultra, a 30 mile distance. Due to some injury issues, I’m under prepared. The race is August 31, a little over three weeks away. Any advise on how to catch up? My previous longest race is 16 miles.
When there’s another person going with you to the race, why not let him drive? It’ll be more relaxing for you before the race. Just my 2 cents.
Im into endurance riding long distance on horses. Utlra running was birthed from our sport. We have allot of people who cross train in ultras in endurance
I’m only doing it to lose weight I think marathon runners look sexy
Completed a Ultra-Trail Australia 100k over the weekend,
I was getting pretty bored of my usual race fuel, so went with a few Vegemite sandwiches at roughly halfway in the race. Picked up the pace to finish in under 20hours
Imagine an Ultra UFC Fight along the lines of 30 5 minute rounds. In order to get paid, both fighters must finish all 30 5 minute rounds. There wouldn’t be much fighting, just like there isn’t much running in ultra marathon events. That is the secret to ultra “running”. They don’t want to name it what it really is for 98% of participants. Ultra Marathon Hiking & Walking. I’m sure Zach will even admit that the pace he completes Ultra events in surely isn’t running, its jogging or slower.
Dude….I loved this video. I’ve done one ultra and you are bang on
YEA! that was a good video, I’m so psyched up. Leadville and Western States have become big dreams for me in the past 6 months. I only started trail-running this year (I’m 30 years old) but now it won’t get out of my head. this video does justice to my dreams of making it out there. thanks for sharing
What number podcast is this? Or can someone please tell me his name..thanks
Nate & The Run experience. Please ask Ucan to come out with a isotonic running gel with electrolytes Thank you! Happy Running and happy trails be safe.: )
Are you refilling your handheld with the soft flasks during your long runs? How do you utilize both the naked belt and the handheld? Thanks in advance!
How intervals are “race specific” when it comes to ultras…
I’m training for my first ultra, and I’m so pleased I am doing most of the stuff you’ve mentioned. Looking forward to it.
I’m early in my training for a marathon next year. I started in very poor shape and I can’t imagine what its like doing an ultra marathon much less in a trail like the one you ran. Congratulations on your amazing accomplishment!
Hey. I live in Bergen too, I wonder where on Earth you find these lush, not too steep, very runnable forests around here??? I have been searching, like forever?! I would appreciate your feedback! π Keep running! (Could join for one too, if interested π I am a veteran UltraRunner.)
I’m now wondering what flavour(s) of gel Nate does actually like! Apple definitely is a flavour that SiS does, but not sure if you get them in the US.
