Hip pain is a relatively common problem in athletes. The most common culprits of hip discomfort in athletes include overuse syndromes or direct impact injuries, but conditions such as arthritis, bursitis, muscle strain, and nerve irritation can also be to blame. In the past, just about any hip pain symptom was attributed to a “muscle strain” type of injury. While this is a common cause of hip pain in athletes, we are learning more and more about other causes of hip pain that can sideline a player from the action.Athletes most often encounter hip pain when they play sports that have repetitive movements, but direct impacts or other injuries can also cause hip joint pain.
We’re exploring hip pain, so you can understand the symptoms of common hip.The Most Common Hip Injuries in Athletes. Back to Blog is caused by repetitive use of the hip.

If you get x-rays and it looks normal, those can typically be treated with an initial period of rest from sports, physical.
Hip impingement can cause severe hip pain and, if not treated, might lead to the onset of arthritis in the patient’s 40s or 50s. “We believe that most cases of hip impingement will begin in boys from 12 to 15 and girls from 11 to 13 who play high impact sports, such as soccer, track and basketball,” Harris says.Certain injuries or conditions can cause hip pain. Inflamed tendons. The most common cause of acute hip pain is inflamed tendons, or tendonitis. This is often due to too much exercise.Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are among the most common causes of hip pain, especially in older adults.
Arthritis leads to inflammation of the hip joint and the breakdown of the cartilage.Muscle Strains: The most common injuries of the hip and groin region in athletes are muscle strain injuries.Muscles around the hip joint are especially prone to this type of injury because they are subject to eccentric contraction. Eccentric contractions cause tremendous forces in the muscle and can lead to a muscle strain. Muscle strains around the hip include groin pulls and hamstring strains.
MANAGING SPECIFIC HIP DISORDERS IN ATHLETES Stress fracturesFemoral neck stress fractures must be considered in cases of unexplained hip pain. The risk of these injuries increases with abrupt increases in training regimen intensity, changes in running surface, use of inadequately cushioned footwear, presence of female athlete triad (the combination of disordered. It is also called hyperlordotic low back pain, 2,16,19 mechanical low back pain, or muscular low back pain. 1,11,19,20 After spondylolysis, it is the most common cause of low back pain in adolescents.
14. Young athletes with posterior element overuse syndrome present. The authors offer a discussion centered on six of the most likely causes of posterior hip pain in athletes. These include: 1) pain coming from the lumbar spine, 2) problems in the sacroiliac joint, 3) muscle pain, 4) piriformis syndrome, 5) hamstring rupture, and 6) femoroacetabular impingement.Among people who participate in sports, extra-articular soft tissue injuries around the hip are common.
The hamstring, quadriceps, adductor, and abductor muscle groups are often the site of soft tissue injury. Overlapping conditions make it difficult to identify the primary cause of hip pain and dysfunction. However, in most cases, a straightforward approach to the patient allows a proper diagnosis to be obtained – the first step toward solving the problem.
This article will briefly review the most common causes of hip pain in active adolescents and adults.

I have 20 years of hip pain. I just tried standing on a step swinging foot. It exasperated the pain. My pain is there all the time, sitting, lying, walking, running, stretching. I have tried lots of Physio and numerous other therapies over the years, but no results to date. Massage feels nice while it is happening but doesn’t provide lasting pain relief. Do you have any ideas for me?
I’ve injured my hips running with leg weights to train for marathon. Have not run in a while to give my hips time to recover. Have been just walking a lot to help loosen that area. However I did slowly start running again and immediately felt sore. Will try your technique…fingers crossed. Thank you

Hi Brad and Bob great video thanks.Being on my own I had no one to assist with your leg stretch advise so I tied a 6kg exercise bag to my ankle and stood on the stairs with my painful leg/hip hanging in mid air over the lower stair tread. This gave me instant relief.Thankyou.
Hello sir, if u read my comment my thigh joint is painful..when I touch tht point I feel so much pain.and my buttocks and leg sometimes pain severely.will this work???
Sometimes I wish they would just get to the point and cut down all the excess jabber.
The lengthening traction worked for me. Thank you very much. What underlying condition does it treat?
I have pain in my hip, could possibly be hip flexor pain too which I think is causing low back pain. It hurts when someone pulls on my leg, its like somethings ‘about to go’. what could that be?!
Liz volunteered to be your dummy? Just a funny! Love your videos!
Could the the under lying cause be a muscle imbalance and weakness in the glutes??
I used a therapy band and tied to my bed and my foot and scoot back till it’s pulling my leg. Worked great and actually works better that way. When a person pulls it for you eventually they get tired after 30seconds. Hope this helps.
Thank you for sharing this. I am also using this Vitalizen Earthing sheet for my recovery and for my joint pain relieve. It is really helpful after the workout.
So please answer me. I have my son pull my leg for my hip all the time. The only pain relief I get is when he pulls my leg…once he lets go bam its back. Its been there for years and years. Feels like an old screen door opening and closing. I pretty sure its bone on bone the gip joint itself. But I dont know.
How often can I do the footstool/ancle bracelet exercises?. it made a difference.. I just don’t want to over due it.. as soon as I walk towards home, after work it hurts bad

Is it safe to do the leg pull if you’ve had knee replacement?
Just found you guys, you are amazing and brightened up my day. Had bad hips for 20 years, doctor sent me to gynaecology, endocrinology now waiting to see a neurologist. Physio just gave me exercises which made it worse. I can’t queue, my hips start burning. If you could see me now, wrapped up in an infrared pad I learnt from another of your videos which I nearly wiped out my desk as forgot I was plugged in. Anyway tried it on the stairs swinging my leg and what a relief, pain gone and while I was watching the video I had your pad on my back and my back feels so much better. You are brilliant, thank you so much, you have done for me in a few minutes what doctors only gave me pain killers for 20 years. And you made me laugh x
The first and third way BOTH require another person. Not sure why they keep saying only the last one needs help. Personally I can’t split into two people and pull my own leg.
For me, it was the psoas muscle that was extremely tight, pulling my hip ball into my socket creating a stabbing pain. Having someone pull my leg was a temporary relief. The fix was using a wooden multi positioning tower which can be found here on YouTube. Wish I had found it 13 years ago. Even after my hip resurfacing was done, the pain continued which stumped surgeons all around the US. I went to Europe as well. The positioning tower causes your psoas muscle to lengthen over time. Stretching the psoas will not work. Muscles are like rubber bands, they come right back which is why you’ll only get temporary relief. The tower is 120 bucks but it can change your life. I used it once and all of my hip pain released. I still use it about once or twice a week as my psoas slowly tightens from the 13 years of being tight from a core muscle injury that mesh was used to fix it (mesh has been removed). I even had a psoas lengthening surgically done which didn’t help. 4 hip surgeries and 2 groin surgeries. The tower made the most difference.
did you know some of these symptoms also could be a stroke please be careful when you think you might have something and it could be something else go see a dr.
Cheers for the Video! Excuse me for the intrusion, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you ever tried Dinanlinson Rocky Position Approach (should be on google have a look)? It is a great one of a kind guide for learning how to fix chronic knee pain without the hard work. Ive heard some amazing things about it and my old buddy Taylor at last got excellent results with it.
