My experience this week is that at four weeks post anterior approach hip replacement the area around the surgery site is still sore and tender. I applied a stick roll on called Hot Hemp Muscle rub. You don’t have Vicks up there. If you can stand the smell Vicks is a decent topical analgesic, same camphor and menthol as some of the more costly ones. Some have more of one or another ingredient but they dull pain to let you sleep or begin to move. Some things use arnica or one of the salicylates. They are all pretty much the same.

I’m having to deal with pain in my knees. I started doing a driving job two years ago. I put on 50lbs and got fat. Well, I finally had my total knee replacement on October 7th and seem to be progressing normally. However, there is still some swelling and stiffness in the knee joint and areas around the knee. I am very skeptical about ANY over the counter topical analgesics. The manufacturer does not want to make it potent; for they fear lawsuits. I was skeptical on the CBD oil stuff. I have arthritis in the knees and enough pain that I hate having to walk anywhere. Hey Docs, I didn’t really have much faith in topical analgesics. They never seemed to help with the pain in my knees. However, they do help with the pain I’ve started to get in my thumb, wrist, elbow n now shoulder. Since my last reply I have tried Biofreeze with good results. It is a cooling gel that goes on easily no rubbing needed. It has a menthol type odor that dissipates fairly quickly and the pain reducing effects seem to last a longer time than other topical treatments I have tried so far.

I place a frozen gel pack inside a thin towel on my arthritic knees for 6-8 minutes shortly before going to bed while watching TV or reading email on my computer. Time passes so quickly this way. Do this and you will have no knee pain while in bed. You can also do this during the day a few times to relieve pain on those bad days.
My teacher suggested that I try CBD oil. I have arthritis pain I’m my legs, I can’t wait to give CBD oil a try!

Topicals can still absorb through the skin and get into the bloodstream and cause side effects. I see black box warnings on prescription pain patches containing medications. They may not be as dangerous as taking orally, but still can cause serious problems. Another example is topical hormone creams can throw off the hormonal balance if used improperly.
I love Tiger Balm Ultra Strength! It’s one of my favorite balms that helps me with my lupus pain, which is prominent in my neck and shoulder joints. I always try Tiger Balm before I break out the muscle relaxants or Novacaine patches (medicine, I really don’t like using it unless utterly necessary.)
I also like peppermint oil.

I’m 3 years post TKR with revision/TKR. MY pain is horrible. I having a clicking when I walk that seems to be on the inside of my knee which is where my pain isto the touch. I really don’t want to take the opioids that I have hoarded but am almost to that point. I am taking 2400mg of arthritis Tylenol 2x/dayI know that is not good but in order to function that is what it takes. What are the chances of having another infection? I’m probably over paranoid but…
For those of you criticising these two Physicians, here, let me make it easy for your very limited intellectual capacities.! Take home message is go to the Pharmacy, read the box, and give a topical ointment or a patch a try. I use products with Lidocaine in them. Biofreeze has worked for me. Aspercreame makes a patch with 4% Lidocaine. The prescription strength is 5%. They also make a lotion to rub affected areas. Go, look, read, and speak with your own Doctor regarding potential use. These two men are merely giving options. While they are Surgeons, they are concerned for patient comfort. I for one, appreciate their time and efforts.
