HOW TO DO ROMANIAN DEADLIFTS (RDLs): Build Beefy Hamstrings With Perfect Technique
Video taken from the channel: Jeff Nippard
Hold a barbell in both hands directly in front of your thighs with your hands shoulder-distance apart (slightly wider than your thighs). Start with a very slight bend in your knees. Roll your shoulders back, drawing your shoulder blades toward your spine to engage your upper back. The Romanian deadlift is a pretty advanced move, so doing different variations of the exercise will help you build the mobility, coordination, and strength to master it. By using different grips.
Romanian deadlift works on the areas like lower back, hamstrings, and glutes. This amazing exercise is performed by keeping legs a little straighter than the traditional deadlift with the knees little bend. The Romanian deadlift is a performance based exercise. Most of.
There are numerous benefits to doing the Romanian deadlift. From muscle and strength building to functionality and overall performance the RDL is an excellent movement. If you play sports, you need a strong posterior chain plus hip extension/flexion for pretty much all athletic movements (Jumping, running, bending, etc). How to do Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift: Step 1: Start with the dumbbells on the floor in front of you, feet shoulder-width apart.
Step 2: Bend over and pick up the weights, keeping your core tight and back straight. Step 3: Keeping a slight bend in the knees, use your hamstrings to pull your hips back to standing and the dumbbells to waist height. The single leg Romanian deadlift is a good unilateral exercise to help improve hamstring health, increase muscle hypertrophy, and promote symmetrical movement patterning. Olympic Weightlifter.Technique Tips For a Romanian Deadlift.
Successful Romanian deadlift technique relies on: Hinging aggressively from the hips. The movement should involve your hips traveling behind you as far as possible. This will allow you to activate your glutes and hamstrings more. Cueing yourself to ‘feel the floor’ with your feet.
How to do a Romanian deadlift. Use an overhand grip to hold the bar at hip level. Draw your shoulders back and keep your spine straight. Push your hips back as you slowly lower the bar toward your.BENEFITS OF THE ROMANIAN DEADLIFT Strengthens the posterior chain immensely, a muscle group that is often weak in many people Teaches the proper spinal position necessary to lift an object when your legs are straight Improves conventional deadlifting technique, which translates to real-world activities.
Uses: The Romanian deadlift is a solid pick as your leadoff exercise in a hamstrings-focused workout, or in second position as well. Doing it later in an intensive routine may leave you too tired to execute the form properly, so if you try it as a finisher, go lighter and really focus on slow, smooth reps.2Romanian deadlifts. A lot of people think that stiff-leg and Romanian deadlifts are the same. This is not the case.
With stiff-leg deadlifts, you lean forward without moving your hips to the rear. In contrast, Romanian deadlifts involve a much more pronounced and purposeful hip movement.Technique: Perform a Romanian deadlift, but keep your right foot farther forward so that the heel is even with the ball of your left foot (your specific hip mobility will determine how far apart your feet can be). After a few reps, adjust the position so that your left foot is a little farther forward.
the dead lift (dl) and its variations are widely accepted by strength and conditioning coaches as one of the “big 3” exercises prescribed to develop “total body strength,” specifically the hip and knee extensors, spinal erectors, quadratus lumborum, core abdominal musculature, and back and forearm muscles. therefore, the purpose of this column is to introduce strength and conditioning.Dumbbell Romanian Deadlift Benefits. First, the Dumbbell RDL builds your posterior chain.
As opposed to a conventional deadlift, this deadlift variation begins from a standing position. Instead of lifting the barbell from the floor, you lower the barbell. Increase the weights as you become more confident in the technique. The best deadlift ultimately depends on which movements you can perform with the best form and a neutral spine. A neutral spine if by far the most important factor when deadlifting which allows for adequate mobility and safety.
For beginners the best deadlift to start with is the Romanian deadlift.

Thank you Jeff. I didn’t know that bending your knees was wrong
should I learn on YouTube how to snatch and clean and jerk. or ask a coach at my school?
I’m male, but I really appreciate your thorough presentation of all the details of this excellent but potentially difficult lift. You have made me aware that I have not bending the legs enough and have been looking up too much. This has caused me to feel it too much in my lower back and not enough in the hamstrings..
Do you think it would be ok to cut out squats If i did sumo and conventional deadlift.
the bar should remain in contact with legs in order to be correct RDL.just saying otherwise its a stiff leg deadlift.
I may be a shallow cunt but Jeff’s gymbro cosplay and mannerisms is my favourite thing about his videos.
What is that piece of shit hanging behind the rack on the wall? Burn that shit.
What’s your bodyfat percentage at 160 lbs when you say “lean” and 180 at “bulk”. Please quantify.
even with hookgrip snatch grips tend to slip out of my hands with relatively low weight just use straps
Bella even though I am a dude your workouts are wonderful and enjoyable to watch honestly girl and they are helpful .
I usually do Romanian Deadlifts but don’t feel that much of my hamstrings; mainly, my glutes, and the hamstrings only feel more tense by the end of the reps and when I am stabilizing/straightening myself when I’m almost full erect. Is it just me?
Thank you Jeremy, I’ve been skittish about squats for years, due to a previous back injury that’s pretty much put me off incorporating the exercise into my program. I’ve tried the hack squat, but don’t find it terribly natural, and have been doing leg extensions along with leg curls instead.
The trap squat definitely looks like a good alternative.
Much obliged
Seen an Athlean X video that said Hamstring Curls are bad because people end up incorporating muscles that lead to back pain; thoughts?
subscribed bro, I weigh 82 kg (181 lbs) and deadlift 200 kg(441 lbs) and have hit a wall, what can I do? I’ve been stuck on it for months
Is sumo or traditional bad for someone with lower back vertebrae problems bc I want to build leg strength
would this help with correction lower back muscle imbalance?
This is one of the best explanations I stumbled upon. Good job.
If your legs are 14″ long it helps to make your hamstrings look “beefy”.
Approximately how much % less will a lifter be lifting compared to a conventional?
This moment when you’re tall and fat so even on the traditional deadlift you have to bend your knees so far to get a straight back that it’s basically a squat
I get this programmed a lot for me but off blocks for high reps and it makes me wanna die
Yeah I always found it interesting how conventionals never made my hamstrings sore.. But the first time I did RDL’s, it was like my hamstrings finally came alive!
You know what, I don’t actually care about strength after watching this guy, I’m no were near as strong as him, but I’m in such better shape
Hi Jeff,
What about those who can’t do RDL?
Shall I focus on the laying curls and lunges?
With my leverages, that’s the ONLY way to dealift (besides semo)
Nice i never see girl do work out on my live xD by the way nice video tho
Real men do not sumo in lieu of conventional lifts. There is no sumo in olympic lifting for a reason. It is a self-restricting move whose sole purpose is to “move weight” as opposed to lifting it. May be ok to “train” but in meets? No Ugggggh
Question, what’s the difference between, prolife and the high volume supplement. Please answer. I don’t want take something that give me the shakes.
You’re motivation handsome,, so perfect hottie muscle love you ❤️
What Workout Split work better for you and made you feel like you was getting the most out of your workout?
thanks for sharing. Great vid; always wanted to try trap bar DL as conventional is on back burner due to lumbar injury in past.
Thank you. I always have lower back pain with deadlifts. You’re the only person to explain why and how to correct it. Thank you so much.
Please do a Myth Bust episode on Beyond Meat. It’s stock at grown 500% since its IPO, but is it really healthier than regular meat? Does it at least have less Saturated Fats?
I did hundreds if not even thousands of leg Curls with almost no results but as soon as I started RDL they began to grow very nice. Same goes for my quads in comparison with extensions and squats.
Really enjoyed the video, very informative and helpful for people wanting to perfect their RDLs.
Funny. When I first started novice lifting with an old bro, I was doing this variation without knowing (novice high school days). We had the same deadlift numbers. When we lifted later on, I switched to conventional and totally passed his numbers. I might start doing these again.
damn, jeff. you’re really hot. look at those glutes. i want to eat them. lmao! sorry for the inappropriate word, but i really would.
Whoa brugh you lifting in tennis shoes??? Shame shame shame (rings bell)
Hack lift is not easy on the knees. Can’t go as heavy so it would make a better finisher in a leg workout. I suppose that’s why it is last on the list. With the Romanian DL I don’t really feel it in the hamstrings so I choose an alternative such as leg curls or glute-ham raise. One of the best deadlifts missed here is the Trap-Hex bar. I remember the difference between Stiff-legged and Romanian DL, the clue should be in the name (stiff legged = straight legged) and i tend to connect Romanians with Good mornings. Same action, bar in different place and different focus ie; lower back. IMO posterior chain, lower back, glutes and hams are important too. The Deadlift and any of its variations work that area well.
Bruv I literally bought your program just to support your channel. I read over it and took heaps of info from it but I think I’ll stick to my current. Great content
Do you recommend hex bar deadlifts too? Or just the standard barbell deadlift?
My week routine: 2 hexbar, 2 conventional deadlift, 1 sumo deadlift. They made me stronger, more athletic and bigger. It’s fantastic how this 3 exercises had changed my pain caused by an hard scoliosis
Could this be done for someone with degenerative disc if they are very careful and use good form. Would love to do these.
Could we get error bars on the figures please? Would be better for telling for whether or not some results are significant
Trapbar Deadlifts are so underrated!!! Thanks for the very informative video
Perfect instructions, my hamstrings have never ached like this, thank you
Its ok that when I am lowering the bar and it touching my leg and shin?
I’ve started doing this exercise recently, and it has immediately become my favorite deadlift accessory, as it helps improve the initial part of deadlift while building upper back, leg and glute strength and mass all at the same time. It is excellent when combined with a front squat. I agree that it is best used as a volume exercise I got up to sets of three with 500 pounds, but I prefer sets of 12 with 405.
Hey man, I posted this on another clip you shared about Bro Jeff’s April Fools post, just sharing it here to gain the necessary exposure:
Jeff, not sure if you are going to see this… But please may you do a video on Cross Fit (CF)?
I personally incorporate CF methods in my training regime and have always utilized correct form as opposed to others who use incorrect form. Now, that being said, as many other training techniques are fractured by, are people who blame an exercise method for their injuries and so those are the most common posts out there.
It would be great to see someone of your humility and honest thorough investigation into CF.
I hope that’s not too much to ask for sir? Either way, I’m still loving your work bud!
This video is so bad wish I never watched it when I started lifting because it taught me all the incorrect wrong things wtf+
Damn look at those quads I wish I had quads like that my legs are so small
I dont understand why you would want to train for anything else than athleticism. Yes, I know that people work out for looks, but I dont see the reasoning behind it. You may get laid by doing so, but it will never be the basis for a good and long lasting relationship. I guess it works for people that has never gotten laid, but even for these people almost any type of exercise will help sufficiently.
you are great! But would be better if you use better mic or recording voice separately.
Jeff I have herniated my L4 and L5 and although it has been maybe 2 years since, I still find it INCREDIBLY difficult to lift any way that strongly activates my lower back….any advise on finding more ways to strengthen that without the pain or injury risk????
For the love of god what is the intro song I’ve been trying to figure it out for like a year!!!
What an amazing breakdown! Thank you for covering all the sections of the body involved. Extremely helpful! ❤️
Just sent this to a female friend of mine who asked what a Romanian deadlift is. Thank you for making a great, easy to follow video that I could send her since I wasn’t able to show her myself. You also just gained yourself a new subscriber. Keep up the great work!:)
im 5’2 i use the same arm span in the video but i keep finishing on my nuts i have to shrug the bar around my junk it’s annoying if i go wider the weight slips even with straps
please help on a serious note
Hey man… shoving and struggling those 45s on is part of my warmup! Lol Great vid.
Yo that’s a cool trick Ima do that now instead of looking like a idiot aha
can anyone suggest the amount to do if you are now starting off? I am new to this
dropping the bar at the end a good thing to do It can jerk your body or hurt your spine can’t it
I mix in all three to compensate for any potential weaknesses
You didn’t mention it, but the trap bar can be flipped over to lower the grip position making it more like a neutral grip deadlift with the load centered.
“get stronger in crappy position so when you go back to deadlifting with a correct position, you feel much more efficient” sounds like train bad form so you can appreciate good form. lol…fun video though
Wow, I am following 12 week Buff Dudes cutting plan, so I already knew barbell RDL, but I didn’t know about DB RDL. And I’m so happy, to see you demonstrate it. Thanks. ❤✌
I already do the suitcase carry with DB bu will try this lateral deadlift
Most helpful video on RDL I’ve ever come across! Thank you!!!
Just got gifted a trap bar for Christmas and really love it. Definitely takes the pressure off my back and is giving me confidence in learning good form. Thanks for the comparisons.
Question. Can I do this exercise with just the weight plate? I ask because the gym I go to is crazy crowded and it’s impossible to get to the bars but there’s always a few extra plates. I’m a newbie. Thanks.
advice for you kids out there, use smith machine while doing RDLS its way better cause its naturally locking you into that position
so glad for your leg tips ⭐️ most people just talk about quads and or glutes but there are so many more important muscles
Another key difference between. RDL and SLDL is the former doesn’t touch the ground, the latter does
Carnivore strength? What does this got to do with death animals? And your states falling down
Thank you jeff, where is Jesse, aaahhh yeah, off eating gummy bears.
Nice vid I prefer standard regular old conventional dead lift and I also love doing sumo
Alan how about Romanian DL with snatch-grip as an assistance work on the deadlift day?
I have watched a lot of “how to…” video but your video is another level, very clear and full of information. I am so glad that I know about your channel. My favorite exercise is Glute Bridge, hope to see you make a video about Glute Bridge. Love from Vietnam.
So as a beginner and someone who wants to lose belly fat ect the trap bar?
Thankyou for this! It was so helpful I feel like I’ve actually worked out now I’ve done it correctly ❤️
The amount of videos out there about RDL are INNSANE! But ALL are sloppy and unorganized. This video has become my One and ONLY guide! Thaaanks!!
No wonder I’ve been failing my deadlift, I grip too wide so my hands have a hard time holding on to the bar. It’s been sooooo frustrating, but now I know the secret technique!
Hi bella why a female glute grow by training more than arms muscles??
Your description is really very well done. If you got a better mic setup, this video would be A-spec. I really appreciate all the pointers on pit falls though.
What is this dogmatic thinking on the deadlift? If it requires a phd to do correctly perhaps its not worth it?
Two dumbbells one on each side would be better and much safer.
The way you are doing it is a recipe for back and shoulder injury.
stiff legged deadlift doesn’t seems right, especially for those with lower back issues
Hey Alan i have a question that i couldnt find an answear anywhere in the net: How much strength can an normal person(not genetically gifted just average) built without roids? In the 3-Lifts.
id love to see more instructional videos like this. Really helps a lot for a newbies like me.
Why do you think the RDL is a superior hamstring exercise to the SLDL?
A lot of deadlift elitist in the comments section I have one question you said what all the deadlifts work more than the others but didn’t talk about what the Romanian, stiff legged and Jefferson focuses on more than the others?
My maxes have gone up recently for deadlift and are now 375 sumo 365 conventional and 425 hexbar. Which do you think I need to work on the most
Any thoughts on the lower grip on the trap bar? Seems like it puts you into a ROM more comparable to the conventional deadlift.
Damn jeff where you going caked up doubled cheeked like that on a tuesday afternoon my guy
Balancing an Olympic bar might be tricky. I assume it can be done with a heavy dumbbell but would have to bend lower.
I do not get how a deadlft hits your back at all, apart from the lower back
Hex bar shouldve been the “conventional” deadlift. Its the safest type of deadlift and works just as good
Such great quality production in your videos, and right to the points that we want to hear about.
I’ve been doing conventional deadlift under a strength coaches supervision, and my back has been getting super strong. My bench has gone up 80lbs, squats gone up 105lbs and deadlifts exploded 145-150lbs in 27 weeks of training. I’m competing in my first meet
Righteous legs man. They remind me of diesel engines, make me want to lift stuff. Cheers
We need a Stephanie Hamstring and glutes workout demonstration. Thanks in advance.
That thumb nail was for us to see his ass because Jeff thinks he’s funny….
I get it, he likes exercises that always work the core, everything he comes up with will always work the core. The core is the secret…
in another video you tell us that rotation + load + flexion lead to herniated discs. this is a lot more dangerous than a conventional deadlift.
Seriously? I see my lumbar going completely out of whack. Maybe a herniated disc in the process. Hello, chiropractor. Love your stuff, Jeff, but this seems mechanically improper. Tell me why I’m wrong.
The hack lift = barbell hack squat
Jefferson deadlift = Jefferson squat
Stiff legged Deadlift = a poorly formed Romanian deadlift.
Sumo = easy version, wide stance
Conventional = normal standard
Snatch grip = conventional with wider grip.
Deficit = advanced conventional. Elevated feet.
At my gym we do quite a lot of trap bar dead lifts, but we usually do them on top of a box, thus allowing for far more range of motion. The movement ends up being basically a squat with a lot of weight, so we usually do those on leg day.
tried it, tightened my core, squared my shoulders, face straight ahead, lifted the bar, got halfway up when guts let out the rest of the liquid detox flush I had the day prior. safe to say it was a mess, but my core did tighten
and 7 people are slugs. great info Alan. my training partner has us do these the week before our ME week. it definatly helps.
I used to do standard deadlifts but i injured some lower back muscles(not spine). And now i can only do 30-40kg in conventional without pain in back. I started do to sumo deadlifts and there’s no lower back pain with 80-90kg. And i didn’t work back more than half year so that’s really good for me.
Jeff literally looks 5’3″ lmao such short range of motion…
Trap bar deadlift can be done either with a upright stance or a more forward leaning stance. It’s not just in betweem these two. It can be either of these two
You should do a video on joint pain (knee, elbow, shoulder) and some ways to alleviate it and help with recovery. Thanks!
WTF i have been deadlifting like that since the start. So if i change the grip closer the weight i pull will go up in numbers gunna try it this week.
Simple way to know which one is for you:
-Traditional Deadlift = For powerlifters and serious lifters
Sumo Deadlift = For pussies
Hex bar = athletes
Thanks! I’m 191cm or 6’2 ” tall, and i am new to this. I have tried the normal deadlift a few times, but it felt very awkward. I got help with my form, but it still felt bad. I saw someone use the trapbar, and tryed it myself. It felt a lot better. I’m gonna use it for a couple of months to make my lower back stronger and then try the conventional again. Thanks for your videos and your in depth explanations. Keep it up!
SLDL is suppose to start on the floor? Lol I hv nvr done that. I always took it as greater ROM. I would use 25lbs for deeper stretch also with RDL I would kick ass out more with heavier weight. Hmm thx for clarity
Re-watched this for reference and just realized I guess “the bros” would put an overhead headphones over their AirPods
My deadlift journey took me from traditional, to sumo, and finally to trap bar (w/ ‘sissy handles’ pointed down). Even though I routinely work RDLs and Rack Pulls, I couldn’t keep my form consistent on the traditional deadlift, especially as I tired. I had some good experiences with the sumo lift, but when my gym introduced the trap bar, I found that I could lift heavier, with consistent form, and really initiate the movement with my legs (again, handles down).
You have THE BEST workout outfits!!! You should do a video on all your workout outfits!!
Hello. Can you tell me which variation is best for those with weak hips and a history of quadriceps tendinitis?
am i suppose to feel pain in the abdomen after a deadlift…..and no its not hernia
rmdl is just a sldl without a full range of movement just do sldl and forget the easier rmdl
Trap bar then Sumo for me, conventional aggravates my back from an old injury, so I avoid it now.
I make the plates touch the floor because it helps me feel it more in the glutes when i push through my heels to come back up, am i the only one?
Does anyone know an estimate on snatch deadlift carryover to conventional deadlift? I’ve heard ratios anywhere between 80%-90% of conventional, would factors come into play as well like stronger upper back advantageous in a snatch?
I love your videos Jeff, I saw that in one of your videos you were pointing out what brands of clothes you were wearing, it would be awesome that you do that all the time, you have a really cool style with sports clothing and regular clothing!!
Why does this feel better then conventional and why am I stronger with wide grip?
Good video could’ve focused more if not for the music in background.
Performed these for the first time today and it was amazing deadlift variation; however, my nut sack was getting squashed each rep….still worth it imo.
if you’re gonna do the trap bar deadlift, at least use the lower handles so its at the same level as the other deadlifts….
Great advice, directly to the point and Alan you got yourself one happy subscriber.
Dear Jeff If we cannot deadlift due to back pain what other options do we have
Thank you for explaining each muscle group that’s being used, and how they should be flexed and positioned. My errors were in the shoulders and back.
Hey Alan, I just watched the Fix Your Wonky Shoulders video and I was wondering what is a good site to get bands?
This video was perfect for me, thanks super helpful and well presented
Bella, do you have any tips on keeping the back straight? I look in the mirror when I am doing this and my back is arched even though I am trying not to. Thanks..
a truer question… how can i do these variations with dumbells!?
I have found only your video for variations in deadlift movements, thank you.
Your snatch grip deadlift is nowhere near where it should be in terms of grip width
Jeff bro. Please clarify
R u taking steroids
Without steroids this much mass and muscular how it can be possible
Hello grom Greece. If someone has trochanteric bursitis can he do this exercise? Thank you If you could help me with what exercises is good for me.Thank you again.
How do you like these as far as quad assistance? Do you feel a good burn/pump on your quads when you do these for reps?
Alan will you make more food VIDEO’s? I really like your food video’s when eating!!!!
Hey Bella! I was wondering if you could make a video like this about hip thrust. I’m still struggling with the exercize!
My lower back was getting injured doing the normal deadlift and now I have switched to a sumo deadlift. Good tips
I die of laughter in every video when bro Jeff shows up
I can’t deadlift because it hurts so much in my upper back so i will be including RDL in my workout routine. Thank you
came here to find some information about Romanian deadlifts
found a man made of thicc husband material
SIGH
His deadlift is just a modified squat. Proper deadlift starts with hinging at the hips followed by leg and further hip hinge until top of the movement.
I do the deficit deadlift and it takes like 30% off my max. I don’t know why it’s so hard for me. I’m guessing I’m bad at pulling from the bottom.
Thank you so much for these videos, Bella! They’re so helpful and I’m looking forward to more of them (if you’re making more of them lol). Off topic, but can you do a video on how you put your hair in a bun? My hair is your length, just a little bit longer I think, and I struggle sooo bad with putting my hair in a bun that is workout-safe haha. Just wondering how you do it!
I feel the stretch, but as I come up, I feel nothing. Am I suppose to squeeze on the way up?
I have a major question here I hope someone can answer it for me..
when you hold the bar by let say your right hand, what side of muscle group are you working? The right muscle group as your hand? Or the left side of your hips gluts etc..?
Thank you for posting the correct way to do this exercise. I find it is one of the more difficult ones to master properly.
I was to listening this while doing something else and I swear I was listening to riley dennis the sjw LOOL
This man is using a semi snatch grip on his conventional, hyperextending his neck, his stance is far too wide for his lankier build, on sumo deadlift his arms are in far past perpendicular to the floor, his shoulder blades are retracted which he reensures at the top by shrugging unnecessarily
7:10 STIFF LEGGED DEADLIFT
( p/isquio, barra separada del centro de gravedad )
Its hurts like a MF in my foot arch when I do calf work, does anyone have any tips or help to give? please? I can’t workout my precious calves!!
good video, defenitly increased my technique, gonna chek more of your videos, think i can learn a lot more
Conventional deadlift is one of the most dangerous workout for the lower back.
Lower back sore first compare to hamstring.. Any suggestion?
I have a hard time with a safe deadlift movement cause my torso is much longer than my legs. My joints are replaced (knees, hips), but the deadlift is a priority for me. Any idea on which deadlift is better with a longer torso compared to the legs?
I had trouble balancing bar when I did it but I liked the depth I was able to get. He suggest more of a hip hinge but I put more on the legs. Enjoyed the work from my core on this one. Might use a landmine set up next time.
Is this a video for deaf people with signlanguage or did he just fail to do the right gestures that support his claims? little irritating…
Your tips and the info about deadlifting is awesome! Really helped a lot man! Thanks!
Question, all these dead lift variations i could do it like a routine in one day training program? Or is better one variation per day?
Okay…nobody deadlifts like that like in the beginning of the video smh lol
Is 13 too young to do deadlifts I’m saving up for a hex bar, is it possible to do sumo deadlifts with a hexbar?
I only do 3 types of deadlifts:
-trap bar dl
-trap bar rdl
-landmine dl
*purposely slow down to focus on hinging, you gonna feel your hamstrings being worked hard without hammering your spine…good luck guys
Dude the flag is backwards the stars should be on the left!!!
i think this is the most informative video on dead lift…and blv me..i have had my share of deadlift videos…hehhe
and i have had a long history of back pain..preventing me from doing dead lifts..after watching this i recently shifted to doing sumo and trap bar….and it worked just like magic…lesser stress on lower back meant lesser back pain..and now i can do dead lift with 120 lbs…
so thanks a lot.
When I deadlift heavy (5-8 reps) my shoulders roll forward, is this bad or ok? I use a lifting belt so I don’t bend my lower back
This video is good but this is the
I’ve seen on YouTube.
Watch now.
https://youtu.be/dDJYB_PSfpQ
Great video as ALWAYS Jeff!
I understood the point of this. It’s very important to keep changing up the exercises and expose challenge to part of the body that have not been exposed to it.
I like doing the alternating grip deadlift and I like the look (and point) of this one. It’s just like the offset loaded Dumbell press video you did.
Do you think you could do a modified version of this with the bar? An Offset Dead lift forcing the focus on the core stability but not quite as harshly one sided?
Love to know your thoughts.
if you see jeff struggle youre not going to be able to do anywhere near that weight or form
Can you cover the sumo dl, or sumo rdl, or both? Or link a vid if you have already?
i don’t feel anything in my glutes when i do this. is that normal?
Here they’re four dislikes from: Jeff Seid, Rich Piana, Lazar Angelov & Simeon Panda. Fifth dislike incoming, from Mike O’heran and his frog
Your first reps are bad. You start your butt off too low. Its not a squat. You will notice on remaining reps your butt is higher…better. Work on that initial rep.
I try everything I feel nothing in my hamstrings only lower back
Im super new so I need stronger squat AND stronger back, so the sumo might be my best option.
I am laughing at the bro outfit when showing the wrong range of motion:D
Wouldn’t this be bad for your back/side as you add more weight with it swinging vertically?
deadlift is waste of time if you’re after hypertrophy. do rdl’s instead. but if you insist, hex bar is superior for 99% of people.
If you’re not doing competition no point of traditional or sumo unless your form is PERFECT you’re at serious risk of injury
Everyone on the comment section needs to stfu and stop being self-accredited personal trainers.
The only people that won’t tone or gain muscle are those that don’t lift.
So quit the bullshit, and just get lifting, that’s the most important!
What about lower handle hex bar…. i think there best all rounder.
You want to be more upright in your start position as if you were going to do a actual snatch.
Maybe I’m doing it wrong, but I like to load my hamstrings even more and start with my butt higher, as opposed to squatting down a little. It makes it even tougher, although I try to be more careful with keeping the weight more manageable for the lower back.
Hey man thanks for the helpful video! Could you help me with a question? http://on.aol.com/video/barbell-deadlift-518060409
Does that look like a Romanian Deadlift to you? It’s a video showing a deadlift on Starting Strength. Just wasn’t sure what type of Deadlift it is. Ty.
What’s up? Oh not much. I was thinking about making some lunch.
You?
sir when ever I dead lift I pain in my left hip joint….plz tell me why this problem is occurring….I do it very carefully while facing the mirror….still i am not able to apprehend what the prob is….
does someone wanna explain why the word “Romanian” is in there
Wow, such a beautiful instructor. I wouldn’t mine taking personal training from her, though I do mind taking personal training from trainers at my Gold’s gym, coz thanks to B.U.F.F. Dudes and internet, I can save my money.
thats not a SLDL, it’s more like a jefferson curl…which 99 percent of the population are not even ready for
Romanian Dead lift, Sumo Dead Lift, Stiff Leg Dead Lift, Reverse Dead lift. What ever you choose… your form’s wrong.
What 5 lifts would anyone recommend to a greco-roman wrestler which requires the strength to lift ppl in the air and slam em
OMG WHY DID I FIND YOU THIS LATE ALAN YOUR VİDEOS ARE AMAZING
Hey mate, great video, have you looked at any research regarding the Nordic Curl? Great eccentric exercise for the hamstrings, primarily used for injury prevention in sport but eccentric contractions are also highly correlated to hypertrophy and everyone could do with healthy hamstrings
Will I gain more if I will be able deadlift more weight on trap bar deadlift, cause I realize that sumo dlft is pretty hard for my quads,it is like doing front bar sit up is harder than back bar sit up,I have weak ass quads I guess…so I do conventional dlft cause we haven’t got trap bar in our gym,it is so damn hard for me with my wooden flexibility…so what is right to grow some mass?lift more weight or start to improve strength on quads with less weight…And it is not worth it to change the gym only because of they don’t have trap bar…
Alan, ive got poor wrist flexibility, do you think I could get strong and build some decent size with a power clean and press, ive got a barbell at home just not alot of room and equipment thanks!
HEY +AlanThrall i want ro gain wieght but my genes in my calves are holding me back help me pleaseee?
Omg spider in the corner.lets just all find something to complain about. Smf
PR last week on deads 155kg at 64kg body weight. Got to thank you/Omar for your deadlift videos Alan that’s how I learned how to do it correctly. Got to try this variation now.
I dont have room for a bar. I use heavy DBs. Can u do a vid on db deadlift and db squat variants?
+Alan Thrall Hey Alan! Me and my buddies are thinking about buying ourselfs an axle/fat bar (50mm diameter) and we wanna know how much less weight (rip english?) you can hold with it. Half the weight?
Yo Alan, can you do a video on exertion headaches when lifting? Suffering from one at the moment and keen to hear your thoughts on how to treat and prevent further occurrences.
Which deadlift is better for bad knees? And upper/middle trap knots, swelling and pain?
Hey Jeff, big respect man. I was suffering from high hamstring tendinopathy in my left leg. Now that is gone to a great extent. However, even after this, I can’t seem to feel any soreness in my left hamstrings after the deadlift sessions. My left leg hamstrings are also thinner than the right leg. Any idea what the issue might be?
Ive prolly seen 100 vids from this channel and this is the first one i think is…not for me.
i am sorry, that is not a stiff legged deadlift. Please, familiar with the movement before making the video. plus, your form on jefferson deadlift is awful.
I like how you keep it short straight to the point, good work man
What is the benefit of doing these after dead lifts? Why not before?
Tried these today after my regularly scheduled deadlifts and it was great! Thanks, Alan!
Hey Alan nice video and I have a question. I am still new to lifting and let’s say bench press should I lift until fatigue or do it in some sets.
Can you perform this snatch grip on the semi-sumo/sumo deadlift?
I was doing this exercise today for the first time and was feeling it more in my back than in hamstrings
I like to mix it up. Sumo and conventional and also with the feet really close together. Is that “bad”? 10 reps of each, and then I move on to a heavier weight.

What’s up beautiful viewers! Today we’re going over the romanian deadlifts with dumbbells, what to focus on and how to preform the movement for maximum strength while staying risk free. I most likely have left something out ( I always do ) But I tried to explain as good as possible the way I do it and the way I would recommend you to do it as well.
Let me know if you have anymore questions!
Bye <3
your videos are the BEST SO EASY TO UNDERSTAND ans VERY HELPFUL!
Anyway you can show some good work outs with a sled PLEASE
Geez so many “experts” in the comments. I thought your video was very helpful. Mahalo
will definitely add this in as an accessory. brought my deadlift up over 405 and hoping to go higher. can’t thank you enough for the knowledge and just pointers I’ve gotten from watching your channel.
Do you think using sandbags for at home workouts is a good way to add weight/resistance and, if so, do you have any tips?
Omg thank youuu I love your videos your so informational. It’s crazy how these lifts help with the core too.
Do you recommend trap bar deadlifts instead of barbell? I’m 33, an ex-athlete, and just looking to gain back some muscle mass. Thanks!
Been a ipf powerlifter for 10 years, fucking great video, keep it up
With all my respect, I see this as a recipe for disaster. Especially for ego lifters…
Jeff love you man you are the best trainer I have ever seen in the world
Got one question
I got no bars at my gym which belongs to my residential community
My opinion: Conventional is by far the best unless you’re preparing for a powerlifitng meet in which case do sumo or if you have lower back pain also do sumo.
This is putting a lot of lateral tension on the spine. Not good.
Hey is there any chance that whoever is reading this can hop over and check out my one rep max video to criticise my form and point out anything that I don’t notice?
having long ass legs, this and thrusts are the only way ive ever been able to hit cheeks. i just kinda rock back and forth, not going too low and they feel loaded the whole time
I just realized he says train untamed. I thought he was saying train on time at the end
The trap bar using low handles can help support for a full range of motion
Carnivore strength? What’s all these got to do with death animals?
Do you think it will work same way with trap bar with significantly havier load on one side?
it’s nice having someone actually back their statements with science. unlike most personal trainers who are less intelligent than the weights they lift. good vids
If anybody is wondering this is a well known exercise Jeff didn’t just make it up. It’s fine your not going to injure yourself
I found a non-olympic bar in a room at my gym that already had weights loaded on it, and I think the load was considerably lighter than what Jeff has in this video. I liked using that amount of weight because I still got a challenging lift, but I left that it was a little easier to control the lift. I’m not quite sure how heavy the plates are in this video, but they look like they are the size of 45-lb plates, which would make the whole thing 135 pounds, bar included. For me, I think 135 might be a little difficult to control, so I’d probably shy away from that much, but with a lighter amount, I think it’s still a very good lift as long as you don’t get hurt.
I’m 6’4 and always had long limbs with a short torso, also always had flexibility issues and strains on my lower back. I remember trying to trap bar for the first time and the next day I literally woke up and told my wife how my back actually feels GOOD after doing deadlifts! I was actually excited to get it in my routine.
Not seeing how conventional requires the most mobility. Squatting wide requires more mobility and a sumo deadlift is almost the same as a super wide squat.
For some reason I get more lower back pain from trap bar than conventional. With trap bar it feels like my lower spine is arching in a lot because of the more upright position. Does anyone have any ideas?
What’s your favourite type of deadlift? Comment below! P.S. – workout B will be up next week! Thank you for all your patience & don’t forget to give me a follow on IG to stay updated (( https://www.instagram.com/jeremyethier/ ). Cheers!
There is a lot of comments about how you can get injured below, and none of them are smart. People without masters degrees and without personal training experience should shut up and learn.
This helped out a lot! I want to be able to work on my quads and glutes without ruining my lower back and do better at my sprinting and coming out the blocks. Loved the vid
I did as you said slide till knee then sudden bend drop and sudden stand up then, to which my pectorial sides of calves are responding and not my thigh are, why so, this is for thighs I feel, am ingenetically malformed sir
i was waiting for the end….
so that i can say with him…”Train untaaammeeedd”
Can the barbell suitcase dead lift be replaced with dumbbell one? What’s the difference in impact?
bad form for Stiff Legged, could cause serious lower back injuries
Hey pal. Dig alot of what you say. After watching you do this. Not a shot in hell. That is gonna get someone hurt. Thx for the video.
I love the way you described and demonstrated why you shouldn’t look up, and showed ur head craned so far back at the end of the lift . That’s a good way to show ppl how if ur consistent with the lift, your head should stay parallel to your body.
an Oly lifter told me I shouldn’t do these unless I’m planning on learning snatches soon. bullshit?
Deadlifts. Every single day of the week. Say that again but slower this time.
i invested in a hex bar, 2.1 metres and 45kg. Had it for over a year now and its helped improve my strength and explosive power. Plus with the size of the bar its saved me buying extra weight plates lol. Would recommend using it in training for sure. Just make sure you have got somewhere to store it. https://amzn.to/36kLNUT, That’s the link off amazon for the bar.
Sketchiest lift I’ve ever seen on your channel tbh. Won’t ever try this
I’m sorry that the only thing people can talk about is your good looks because this video was genuinely more helpful than any other that I have watched. I typically hate using videos as a learning tool, but a wikihow article and a mirror were obviously going to put me at risk of injury. Much of what you said I’ve read/watched somewhere else before, but you were careful the mention small things that can make a big difference and you followed through with examples. I went from hearing “keep your shoulders pinned” to knowing what the hell that actually means after watching this video. Years of riding horses in my youth has left me with lower back issues, and not everyone can afford a personal trainer or even a gym membership. Thank you for the video.
would using two barbells (standing in between them) make the hex squat bar redundant?
Never seen this one before. I’ll give a try!
I like that way you talk about energy leek. I need to strengthen my core and I needed to hear that!
It looks really hard to lift the long bar with one hand. It’s gonna be a hell of challenge for me. Thanks, Jeff!
This a great exercise. I just started doing these to strengthen my core but
also my left leg which isn’t as strong as my right due muscle imbalances.
Give that one a miss i think….D/lift with barbells is a great option instead..
