I actually started slow, and was slow fucking the whole race
Quick question. When you start a take do you go your own pace or do you want to start in first
y’all so good geez i thought my 5:39 was pretty good now i read how everyone runs sub 5
Thanks bro. I’m sophomore and high school runner. I have race tomorrow I hope I can hit 4:45! That’s my goal
First 30k tomorrow! Wish me luck!
Also i cant wait for my free beer
Thank you Ethan! Im running my first full marathon, NYC on Nov 5, 2017
I need to run in 6.7Km in less than a week. halp me:-: Its the first marathon!
The beer at Novant Health Charlotte Marathon was Michelob Ultra. The Halfers ran and caused a shortage of Michelob Ultra. I ended up buying my drinks of choice… Four Loko and Miller Lite.
I actually broke a 5 minute mile yesterday at my track meet by figuring something out that could’ve helped me a long time ago, it’s the fact that when I ran my mile I tried to negative split it like the video said and I ran a 5:04 which felt good but it wasn’t what I was shooting for, then I tried keeping up with someone a little faster than me and kicking it in the last lap and that was where I also ran a 5:04, but yesterday I was at district and I knew I had to stay at the front in order to advance, so right at the gun I ran 5 really hard steps to get myself in 6th place and I found myself passing all the trouble of going through people while the faster people got further away, but I passed 2 people up near the end of my first lap and set myself in good condition to just pay attention to my running, but I kept up with the front for the first two laps and started to slow down on my third, but I picked it all up on my fourth and finished 4th place with a time of 4:53, moral of the story is that there are different ways people can run a mile, but I figured out that running with people my speed or running the last 2 laps as fast as I can won’t work for me, I now know that in order to run faster you have to run with faster people so that you are forced to push yourself and place yourself in a uncomfortable position Instead of going the same pace the whole race, this is simply what worked for me and I just wanted to share that with everyone
I’m running my first marathon in may 2018 and I’m already freaking out but excited at the same time but I know I can do this just gotta know where to start besides exercise, running, and eat healthy.
It really helped me, it was my first marathon, and me and my friends won
I can’t go even sub 6 smh… best is 6:01 been running 6:30s lately full effort though:'(
The average person has no idea how fast 4 minute milers are running the four laps. They are flying. Very good video. But the emphasis should be on a person achieving a PR or Personal Best, not necessarily winning. Training for the mile, pacing for the mile, strategy for achieving a PR is a great way to achieve fitness and health. Plus running on the track is easier on the joints than road running. I don’t know why it is not more popular.
Dont burn out in the first half. Great tip for any run really.
Good vid! Just tested this morning, will implement these strategies next time, thanks!
Thanks for ur tips.. im running for my first full marathon this weekend.. i will enjoy it
I want to negative split but when the group goes out hard I can’t let them just go away from me. Tips for running with a group? U cant just let them go right? Drafting is a thing.
Loved this. Found it very helpful, especially as I am doing my first marathon in September and was planning on treating myself to some new trainers on race day!! Won’t be now though.
All good tips. #2 Start Slow Run Slower speaks the most to me.
Just got one in 2.5hours and watching this. Thanks for the tips
Great video. The mile has been my passion since H.S. Similar I think to your advise, here is my method of focus I’d like to share.. I name each lap to help me focus as follows. Due to Adrenaline I name lap 1 the “fear lap” lap. That feeling usually subsides at 200 meters. 2nd lap I name “settle down” lap as I get into the pace & relax. 3rd lap I call the “work lap”, this helps me stay in the game & set myself up for a good finish. I call lap 4 “bring it home” & I will press a bit until 200 to go. Look up to the finish & begin my kick. I believe P.R. s happen during lap 3.
Is it suitable to run with my school shoes? ( Tip 3 no new thing )
My school shoes is my biggest problem/enemy.
1 shoes, 1 year, my foot is getting bigger
I wish I’d listened to tip #2 last summer on my first marathon. The last 10km were excrutiating because of it. But I did finish and did learn alot. I was amazing and the next one will be much better.
Running the LA Marathon tomorrow! Great Tips, You just saved me from over carbing myself. And yes I cant wait to drink beer again!
I’m running my first marathon this Sunday!! it’s the 2017 LA marathon. thanks
Am I the only one who is super slow and can run a mile in 8:00 minutes. It’s so annoying cuz all my friends can do it in 7 or 6 minutes
Running my 1st marathon in NY in November 2017. Most I have done so far is 10k. Wish me luck!
Great info, I’m living by some of these tips! Ive started documenting my journey to the London Marathon start line, check it out if interested:)
Thanks, really help, going for 4:30s tomorrow and feel really confident
I don’t drink sports drink during training. But they provide that for the race and I think it is a good idea to have some. What kind of problem could that cause?
No. 2, Start slow.. hmm I prefer keep running on my pace from the start to the end so I don’t need to slowdown at the first..
I’m running my first marathon in April. I love your tip to dress for the temperature not the weather. That’s not something I’ve heard before but it makes so much sense. Thank you
Am 70 when I’ll do my first marathon July the 30th…love your coments and advice…will let you know how it went. Manfred
I’m a 12 yo girl and really slow we are doing the mile tomorrow and aiming for 8 minutes ( I know that is slow but is good for the speed of my grade) wish me luck!
I consider myself a seasoned runner having done it for 15 years, but I’ve never heard someone explain so explicitly and clearly why we should do a warm up preventing the “shock” to the body and neuromuscular system. In retrospect, it’s kind of common sense but I have never put much thought into why I should do a warm up if I even do one at all. This kinda rocked my running world. I’m going to be warming up more during my training and see what this does for me. I usually just take off right from the front porch. Thanks guys for the video!
The best advise so far.The medals all look the same. The ego is what going to hurt you.
thank you for advice i will run m’y first half marathon 3next weeks thank you again that help me
Having now done 7 marathons, I wish I had taken in enough carbs on race day to get me to the finish line without a lot of walking. Runners who need 5, 6, 7 or more hours to finish a marathon will need 50-60 grams of carbs per hour. Each packet of gels that we use on long training runs and in running the race will have 20-25 grams of carbs per packet. That works out to 2 gels per hour (for gels with 25 grams of carbs per packet) or 3 gels per hour (for gels with 20 grams of carbs per packet). This is not a BS selling point by the gel companies. Most noobie runners in their first marathon (and also in their really long runs late in the training cycle) seriously underestimate the amount of carbs they need. Your body needs a lot of fuel to run a marathon. Don’t kid yourself. If you take chews or blocks for carbs, just check on the nutritional label to see how many grams of carbs that it has. You will also get some carbs from the sports drink that is offered at the aid stations. However, most of these sports drinks will give you only about 3-5 grams of carbs per cup. Not much, but when you are out on course for a really long time, every gram of carb will help you out.
All these people taking about 4 minutes the coach wants me on the team somehow and my fastest is 8:18 and tryouts are in 2 months ahh but I’m working on it wish me luck
My fastest mile time is 5:26.71 hoping to get in the late 4s today. Wish me luck!
You know you’re fucked when you start searching “how to run a marathon” a week before yours.
Tomorrow is the marathon, and today I’m watching this video.♂️♂️♂️♂️♂️♂️♂️
For Tip 2: It’s absolutely good advice, but there’s one more benefit that doesn’t get recognized. Other people often go too fast at the start, and then slow down at the half and slow WAY down at the 20. Even if you never speed up, you’ll be passing these people on the second half and this creates a positive feedback loop. So you pass someone, which makes you feel great and so you keep running. And since you’re still running, you pass someone else. Which makes you feel great…
I always hear stuff about keeping cadence around 180 to run more efficiently. To run slower for the first part should I take really short strides and keep the cadence up the whole time or just throw cadence out the window while running slower?
My mate only gave me one… always look best and smile to those cameras at finish
every time I force a smile while i’m running I look like i’m in pain, so maybe not. thanks for the video. this is very helpful.
Last year (sophomore year) my pr went from a 5:12 to a 4:53 for the mile like that now my pr is at a 4:44 wanna run sub 4:30 by the end of the spring season
I am a freshman in Highschool and I run usually just above or below a 5:00 minute mile. Is that a decent time for my age or should I try to lower it?
Just did a 4:37 on my treadmill, but I’ve never been involved in any running or track programs due to social anxiety. I’ve never been to a track before, but I’ll have to explore one nearby and practice alone. I’m a senior in high school and kind of wish I stepped into running earlier.
Love it, tomorrow im doing a 1 mile time trial and am trying to get around 6:40 since I’m a beginner. Wish me luck!
If you have to run a mile around a track in elementary school with out stopping. i would recommend starting of slow so you don’t get tired super easy
I’m a freshman and I got moved to varsity for one of the meets, and after watching this I beat my pr and got a 5:02, and that’s varsity level for my school, thanks for this video, it def helped me
Man, your tip number 1 surprised me. That is the one main thing I have not been doing, is trusting myself.:) Thanks for the tip.:)
Im 9 and I want to get a faster time than 6:41 “I hope this video is good”
I remember watching this video when I was at 8th grade my PR was 5:46. Then Freshmen year I didn’t take seriously my mile until district which I ended with a 5:04. Now that sophomore Xc ended Running lows 16s Almost broke my mile record I come back again cause I really want to get a 4:30– 4:40.
I’m at 5:13 right now and I need to break 5 in the next few weeks
I’m just in middle school, but the miles tomorrow, and i’m not completely sure that i’ll get 1st, so now i’m at this video. (7th grade btw)
OMG thank you that was so helpful, Just came across ur video and I’m having my first marathon. WISH ME LUCK! Ginger run
Done a couple of HM in previous years, and finally doing the Amsterdam Marathon in October. One tip of an experienced runner friend: choose a Half Marathon race in the month before the Marathon and run your Marathon pace there. It’s a great test.
I committed to a marathon awhile ago but I developed an injury finally recovered but left with only 6 weeks to train. I’m not out of shape but I have my work cut out.
I am preparing for my first marathon 20 weeks out this information was super helpful! Thanks now on to April 29th! Hall of Fame Marathon Canton, OH
I hit my new PR which sas 5:52 and got first place. I warmed up for literally 30 mins or so and lets just say it worked like a charm. I went alot faster off the line than usual but felt good so i kept it. Im trying to hit 5:30 but it just takes time.
Awesome video. I coach Middle School is there any advice that I could have as far as how to prepare for the mile when they’re that young of age.
Thanks for the tips! Trying to go sub 10:10 and sub:4:40 tomorrow i would like a future video on how to run fast and keep your form on the last 200 of a 32 or 16
I’m going to have to challenge you on your philosophy of aiming to run negative splits. That is the worst possible way to maximise your performance over any distance. Every athlete knows that as any race at any distance progresses, you are likely to get slower. The faster your start, the faster your finishing time will be. This is club-runners’ rule number one. When you are the world record holder and you are holding back enough to just win the race, then you might do negative splits. So your 4:06 would probably have been 4:00 dead if you ran positive splits.
I’m a 13 year old girl in seventh grade and my best mile is 6:07. I’m trying to beat 6 minutes even though it will be hard.
I’m a middle schooler and my mile time is 7:08 but that doesn’t qualify for state how do I work on more cardio and how to progressively get faster without getting tired a lot
im really bad in running i need to cover 1 mile in 7:30 minutes, i think these tips will help me
4 MINUTES??? I run a 7:40 mile IN middle school and the coach always makes me do it
Update 1 year later: I’m currently a sophomore now my PR is 5:59 wow I can’t believe I found this comment
loved the part about breaking your race into chunks, and only focusing on that chunk. i always worry about the later laps when i’m on my 1st or 2nd. i hope that helps because i have my first highschool track meet this saturday! thanks!
that was a great video thanks for the tips do you think a 5:26 mile and 2:19 800 is good for an 8th grader
Love them, ready for my first marathon tomorrow, Houston chevron
Just finished my first marathon today! Thanks for all the good content, your videos really kept me motivated!!
I am trying run sub 5 min mile but this past 2-3 meets getting 5:08. I am on pace 800 meter but 3rd lap is hard!
With all due respect, “accidental” carb loading is what actually convinced me i could run a marathon. I overate on a saturday night, loaded up on linguine. The next day I hit the treadmill to run off the guilt. Long story short I ended up running a half marathon on the treadmill and I’d never run longer than 7 miles at once. From that point on I got into endurance running. Everyone’s different.
Thanks..listening to you..had a meaning,,thanks and CHEERS!!
I have a meet on Tuesday, 2 days, and I’m running 1600 m and it’s my first season as a track runner I’m kind of nervous and I feel like I’m not good, what should I do to make myself ready, and what do I do if I mess up and everyone sees?
Made me feel better tnx brother!!! Marathon tomorrow lets do this!!
im running my first marathon this week, LA marathon im nervous, but after watching your video I FEEL I CAN DO THIS!!!
This video actually helped a ton. Last year as a freshman I ran my first mile ever in 5:02 and today I ran my first one of the season in 4:45. Thank you
This guy is on the money the shock he talks about is true even more so as a veteran runner. I do a mile race tomorrow & i will do a mile jog & throw in a short race pace to bring that shock on just before the race starts.
Doing 1600 in 2 hours. Trying to get top three and sub 5 minutes. Coming back later to let u know how it goes. Wish me luck
Edit: I got third and 4:59.81 YESSS
Edit 2: thanks for the likes hahahah
I’m going for 6:00 by the end of the 7th grade cuz I was a fat*** during elementary school and ran a 12:00 so I want to run twice as fast.
I did a 4:44 by going 72-71-71-68. I usually ignore the other racers in the first 200, and pick up the effort each lap. Wearing a watch is a great strategy, and high schoolers run the first lap way too fast. I can start passing people from the 300 mark all the way through the last lap, despite having horrible 400 speed. For the last lap, I do have to sprint the whole thing, as if I wait until 200 to go, I’ll just get out kicked.
Always struggled going out too fast 1st lap and dying out on that crucial 3rd lap. It took me a while to learn to control the race instead of letting the race control me! 4:06 is so impressive. My hs record was 4:39. ( 5ft 6 inches )
3:26 had to replay that twice 0_0. WTH
That reaction shows you where I am at XD
Thank You For This!
First time Marathon (LA Marathon) this weekend… your tips are very helpful. Especially the pooping part
Loved this! Thank you for thoroughly covering this topic. Helped me tremendously prepare for my first mile race yesterday. PRed my Mile! Woohoo!!
Advise to have “fun” yea marathons are not fun. They are very stressful on your body. The fun part is the sense of accomplishment afterwards. Anybody pushing themselves for a PR or beginners marathons are extremely difficult.
I have the mile in gym got 7:34 last week going for like 7:20
So, when I was in high school, I had a 450 goal, and if I went slower than a 70 second first lap I would have been about 5 seconds behind the pack, so trying to go right on my goal pace wouldn’t have worked. Especially if your coach starts yelling at you to keep contact. By the way, that included races where the winner was around 455.
My coach told me it straight he doesn’t know how to coach distance what should I do to improve my time currently running 5:32 ( I’ve gotten slower ) I can’t just use the track an do my own workout or he’ll say shit an move me so sprinters can hog the track
Wow. That was like the most insightful and well thought out piece of race tactics I have ever watched. Well done.
Great video! I really liked how you went into the sequence of a race and training day and said to stay hydrated, and the third mile!
I saw in a different video that you should run as fast as your goal speed should be, often. For example, if you plan on running a mile in 5.5 minutes, you should run at that speed, to make your body aware of its intended intensity. Would you say this is accurate or should you taper off time, or even go faster then goal speed to build muscle.
My next question is whether or not a 200 pound man with lots of upper body strength can run a 5-5.5 min mile. I am not 200 pounds, I do not have that weight or upper body muscle, but is that feasible (assuming they are around 6 feet).
My last question is about the grounds and surfaces we run on. How much does it make a difference? Should we avoid running on concrete at all costs? For short and long term damage from usage?
I live in Europe and they definitely have some questionable cobby roads.
Ill try your techniques tomorrow.
Great advice. I got my first marathon next year. The London marathon
Thank you. I plan to run my first marathon this year. I’m excited.
what is he trying to say in 7:06 i cant seem to understand. He says “you start to cut it down effort wise” How on earth will you cut down your lap time if you cut down your effort?? Then says “effort goes up, time starts to come down” But sir you just said, “you cut down effort wise”.??!? Please eplain this is really confusing.
Great video. I’m glad to see the mile event event get some love. I’m still one of those people who go out a few seconds too fast on the first lap. Takes practice to resist the urge to go out fast when the legs are so fresh.
Stay up front! Pace off the pack and burst in the last 400-600m. Long runs with Tempo! & Fight through the pain
