I use Kinetik rocket 3 l. 65Gr. For ultraraces I use Nathar vapor krar, is so cool
Do people not watch reviews themselves before they do them? This is primarily a close up of your face talking a lot. Put the vest on, and put stuff in it. This is literally you fiddling with a bag and randomly showing close ups of your face. Total waste of time.
So funny, won’t be buying that then. Thanks for saving us all the time and money.
In 2020 the Nathan Vapor makes you look like your scuba diving.
Nathan VaporAir is indeed an awesome running vest. Perfect fit for trail running and any distance. Plenty of storage plus bungees to carry trekking poles when needed. I also prefer the bladder in the back as well, so that is one more plus to this vest .
Salomon adv 12 set. Def best pack on the market. Good job. And it’s not even an s-lab! You should check out Inov8 and montane packs too.
QOTD: Road marathon aid stations and Ultra Vest + aid stations.
It is not really a game changer, because you can not race with it in Europe at Ultras. You will not be able to carry all the mandatory equipment. And on the other hand, I don’t think that every gram at your upper body does really play a role for your performance. I am using the Adv. Skin 5 Set and I almost don’t feel it.
soooo, the 30.00 extra from the Nathan scared you away from the Salomon?
Hey, I’ve got this pack and have been searching far and wide to find an appropriate bottle. Do you (or anybody for that matter) have a bottle that you’d recommend? (one that doesn’t shake around)
Thanks for the review,
Considering the amount of money I paid for my huge a..ss high quality hiking backpacks, price for running packs are bullsh.t expensive for what they are and the small amount of materials used to build them
Unfortunately we need them and the companies know it…
Question of the day. I don’t carry nutrition and will hit the water stations. Ultras, 50k to 100 mile races, Ultimate Direction ultra vest, bottles, gels, needs. Ultras are so individual gear is chosen to fit the logistics.
I run quite often with my hydration pack…I use it mostly as a weighted vest…2L bladder (full 2kg) plus some added weight in the pockets…all in all it will weigh slightly more than 6kg when full…I don’t often drink from the bladder but it’s a nice thing to know that you have the water with you when you set out on a long run!
BOOYAAAAH! That Raidlight looks sweet! I have a 10 L Solomon pack that I use for ultras. I probably need to invest in a smaller race kit. Debating between handhelds and a vest.
I bought the salomon speed cross 5, thanks for the recommedation.
Hi, can you make a video for people who do hiking? (packs for example), will be very nice. Thank you.
Great review loyd. I’ve just purchased a Salomon Advanced skin 12 from your review. Always been a Ultimate direction person
Actually bought the extra pouch add on for the poles and it works better (for me) then the other option for the poles. But the best one out there like you said.
I sent the Nathan back. Main problems were open back pocket should have had a fastening, just velcro would do. Mobile phone pocket too small for today’s bigger phones. I felt my cheaper pack was better it just doesn’t have a pole carrying holder.
I’ve been using the camel pack circuit for 4 years now and it’s been through marathon, 50k, to OCRs. Only recently has the adjusting clips on the bungee cords for the 2 front pockets lost its ability to clip therefore leaving the pockets unsecured but amazingly nothing has ever bounced out while running. I just loop the bungee cord on my right pocket to one of the bladder straw clip on the sternum strap and voila! My phone is secure that way. But I am eyeing the Nathan for more pockets…
$150 or $180. I’d just spend the extra $30 and get the Salomon.
As everyone else said, thanks for the honest review. Nike really don’t helps their reputation by releasing items like this one do they…
I will stick with my trusted Salomon vest for now!
QoD I’ve never actually raced longer than a HM, but this summer I wore my Patagonia Slope Runner 4L vest for weekend long runs.
I route the nathan hydration tube on the same side of the magnet so you don’t have it flapping around when you take off the whole pack. You end up with an extra long tube but you can always cut it.
I run with a Marmot Kompressor Zest Hydration backpack and have used it on all my long runs and a couple of ultras! Thanks for the video just in case something happens to it in the future.
That’s the 2019 version of the vest. On the 2020 version the red is slightly darker, the flasks have a wider opening, and they’ve changed that little cord lock/toggle that you said broke. It has a different toggle design now.
I’ve heard somebody say Salomon sent them the new style toggle to fit to their old pack after theirs broke.
Just bought the Nathan VaporAir, after extensive research. Great fit, value, and storage.
I am in China, I bought it, it is very easy to use, but the side pockets do n’t feel well designed
I’m testing out some vests for a staged race I’ll be doing this summerhappened to test out the Ultra Vest 4.0, Salomon ADV Skin 5, and the Nathan VaporAiress 2.0. I mostly agree with your assessments here. As a small female distance runner the VaporAiress is my favorite of the three, followed by the Advanced Skin. The Ultra Vest didn’t work for me.
This has been the issue with Nike and what I’ve seen with their recent trail shoes (the worst wet grip outsoles in the industry). They have so much money that they don’t seem to worry about quality checks. But they’ve gotten far too style over substance. Looking at you Wild House 6.
I would really like to see you review the orange mud hydration pax which are different than any other ones I’ve seen. I’ve run with Camelback and Nathan best and while they’re good the orange mud models work better for me in places like Okinawa where it’s hot and humid and you want to have your back free to sweat and release all that excess body heat.
Can you please do a hydration vest review for women? Most of these companies offer men and women packs. You didn’t show any of these on women and vests fit different on women (for obvious reasons).
Have you compared the Naked Running Band, or their vest? Been using their NRB for a year, and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to a vest.
naked running band + patagonia strider pros (3L total) if the aid stations are frequent:)
How’s the sizing on this one? Did you order according to size chart?
BR
I have no basis, but my feeing with the growing popularity of Nike Trail, is Nike corporate took over. in my mind the Trail division went from this offshoot cool subdivision that had more creative control over the apparel/marketing (vest included, the old Kiger vest was good) example was the limited releases with SanFran Run Co and the product was awesome. But something has changed, good example is their latest apparel, looks nice but not well thought out. Bought the Phenom Elite Trail pant, you cant even get your foot through the ankle holes, it’s like giving birth to your foot, Nike Trail pros had no input on this, The new Nike Trail hat logo peels off the front and the windbreaker misses many features you would hope from a $$ jacket. The savings grace is the shoes, Kiger 5/6 is good. WH6 is good despite some instability and by all accounts, Pegasus Trail 2 is really good. But the overall brand seems to have been cheapened by Nike corporate.
Hi Seth here is some advice from a nutritionist, your digestive system hates cold fluids after a workout, it’s what we call in the field “total mismatch” your digestive system will not take any of the nutrients in the water until it has raised its temperature to a suitable temperature “60 70 degrees” all the best.
Great, honest & genuine review Loyd as always thank you, can’t help but feel the vest is the product of a ‘brain storm’ meeting….”we haven’t got a race vest have we….we should get one out there quick” sadly as you say the swish will still see a reasonable number of them sell. Certainly be sticking to my Salomon 12 set, keep up the great content, all the best
I’m not a long distance running but I’d think it would be hard to not go with the Solomon.
I have a camelback 2L vest… it’s big n clunky and holds water… this thing looks so awesome! Now to decide if I need new sneakers in a couple months or water…. hmmmm…
hi any followup to this? was it useful in the end or did the bounce cause too much problems (chafing & impaired running efficiency)
Mate, where is the Garmin Instinct review? This is the most exciting garmin (for me personally) that would finally sway me from a GShock. Def needs the Rizknows cover:)
12 Set, notice the capacity skipped 5 and 8 due to great adventures of Danny “today is a 21 mile loop” then 7 hrs later ok today we did 35 miles….Lol great stuff, love the review and channel
You’ve peaked my interest! In search of a vest for 2020. Need to try them on first of course
So this vest is lighter than my GPS watch?:D
BTW if anyone is looking for quite a good vest for really cheap you should look at Hofer/Aldi one. It has a blader 1,5l and few pockets on the front side. I used it for 30k trail race and I didn’t get any chafing. It was 19,99. The only downside, in my limited experience, is that you don’t have two “bottle” (Salomon style) pockets at the front so you have to, if you don’t want to use blader, put one of them on your back.
Is there only one SJD? I mean how do you create this great stuff DAILY and have time to sleep?
I’d be keen to pair this with my Naked Band it even looks like a match.
I do note that your happy dance made the poles slide out a bit. Let’s stay tuned for a review after some longer testing with poles in place 😉
QD: Bottles in vest (Salomon 5L) and a 500ml in the back of my Naked Band if needed. I’m a fan of free hands especially as i like trails that suit the use of poles.
Thanks again rizknows!
I love marathons and hiking!
This was another great video I always wanted to know which running pack to use:)
(1st)! I like the Nathan vapour!
Nathan. I’ve had mine for a year. Many trail miles. Awesome.
Seth,
Great Video as always. 9 month onwards would you still recommend this product? And bottles on chest vs bladder on back?
I am looking for a training vest for full marathon running (aiming for 3.5hr run).
Best,
Michael
Melbourne, Australia
Why bother, took your advice and purchased the salomon 8 set, never had a pack before, but it’s been a revelation on my long runs, keeping hydrated, and carrying kit.
Thanks, Seth, great subject as I agree that using a vest is a very good option for long distances (even road) races. Another point is that compared to carrying a handheld bottle, the repartition of weight is better (you don’t risk for your arms to be tired carrying a bottle). Last point: When you are diabetic as I am, it allows to transport your medication. You can also stick to a nutrition you are used to during the race and not depend on what the race organizers displays for you at aid stations as you mentioned. The water bladder can be bothersome but turn it upside down after filling it and suck the air out via the drinking tube before placing it in your bag, it helps. I used to use handheld but now using the Salomon SLab Sense running vest.
QD: hydrate using 2 500ml flasks on UD vest. Just replenish at aid stations when applicable.
The lighter the vests gets the more they’re looking like a bra. This ones not for a man like me
thanks Loyd, I was quite interested in this one as first off it looks a great value pack with all the features, but as the review went on it does look like someone, who doesn’t run, was given a number of pockets and some material and told to put it together for under £100. Phone pocket inside under your water pouch?? Seriously?! Come on Nike! I think they blew the R&D on the vapour fly!
Just use one of those hats you can keep drinks on and have a straw. Simple answer ♂️
very naive design from Nike Trail team. Cannot pour money and get instant thoughtful design.
QD: I use two ultimate direction clutch handhelds for marathons. Holds 3 gels in each and 500ml fluid in each
Not a runner but I would say the nathan is the pack to have and I’ll show my daughter who is a runner
having trekking poles on your back doesnt look too convenient for the arm swing
Great stuff Seth. How much was this raidlight vest?
You can not beat this for value, weight and 5l capacity
YES £20!!!!!!!!!!!
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/gilet-trail-5l-water-id_8489223.html
Impossible to fit all utbm/tds/ccc mandatory gear in a 3 liter pack…
I used the naked running belt and patagonia strider pro short, which has tons of storage, for my 55k, and this was perfect. I carried two 500ml flask in the belt, and fuels, phone, packable windbreaker, and an extra pair of socks. Worked to perfection. It was the perfect combination. You should check out this belt and the short too.
I made a similar vest last year. This kind of vest is not good as it’s too bouncy and the fabric will dig to your shoulder and back of your neck
https://www.instagram.com/p/BrRg6K_nnvO/
Need Blake to puke on the backpack to know for sure it’s durable
100 mile ready hydration vest: the compressort ultra s pack! Been running in this vest for a while and i love it! The only thing less about the vest is that it’s difficult to put the soft flasks in but that’s it. It’s fits like skin!
Is there a way to use a hydration pack for winter running, meaning sub zero temperatures? The water line always freeze…
I’ve been using the Nathan VaporAir since September and have logged countless miles in training for my first ultra. I love it. It holds everything I have needed on my runs and it has ample space to pack away the extra layer I was wearing on a few longer runs.
Great review nicely put together. I’ve being eyeing up this pack but you’ve flagged some valid issues with it. Time to go back to the drawing board.
As great as many Nike shoes and their innovation, their running packs are always a disappointment. They need to learn from Salomon, Ultimate Direction and the likes.
Those side pockets on the Raidlight look like it’d be impossible for me to retrieve gels while running. I’ve noticed lots of vests do this, unfortunately. I’m not super flexible so maybe that’s part of the issue, but reaching up to mid-rib cage and then INTO the pocket is difficult for me while running. Have been eyeing those Salomon S/Lab vests b/c I love the stretchy fabric but need to try one out to see if I have the same issues with the pockets.
I’m looking for a vest that isn’t like carrying another person. Maybe this will work
My Compressport running vest, the “ULTRUN S PACK”, only weighs 80 grams, or 2.822 ozs!
After trying the Nuun electrolyte drink, and Heed, hammer, elete, ketones…I LOVE The Right Stuff
It was developed by NASA for Astronauts…and you can tell!
https://therightstuff-usa.com
It gives me alot of energy, relieves the buildup of lactic acid, and nothing compares.
For these ridiculous prices, why not just use a Camelbak mule?
If the price difference is only $30 get the Salomon one!:)
I like the ultimate direction ones except the bottle tops get destroyed in the OCRs I’ve run lol. I switched to a belt
Been using a belt because it’s roomy and I got it free. Can you run shirtless in this Raidlight without chafing? How does it handle a LOT of sweat?
A large number of the majors (marathons) don’t allow a vest. “Camelbaks® and any type of hydration backpack are not allowed.” Tons of shorts out there that can handle multiple (6+) gel packs, phones, etc. I take hydration from on race course. Train using Gatorade Endurance as that is used on the course I will run for my BQ and was on my first marathon course last year. For training, put bottles out. Won’t carry in race so testing out in training I would not carry either.
What do you think of running in cycling jersey? Many of them are really lightweight and can stash stuffs in the back pockets
I carry a bottle during my last 3 marathons ( 3:16, 3:08, 2:58) I practice the quick fill at an water stop in training. I train and race with Hammer Perpetuem, so this is the option I go with. yes I do a lot of pace workouts with a bottle. I rather do this than carry my vest that I use for my long unsupported trail runs. In trail races I still go back to the bottle vs vest but so far my longest distance between aid stations is 12 miles and average is closer to 9.
Great review Loyd, I think I’ll stick with my Salomon! You were spot on with the price point, looks more style over substance!
QD: I haven’t been able to experience a marathon yet, but your way with the vest seems like the choice I’d make
I like the Nathan, camelbak and the Salomon. Seem affordable and perfect for what I need.
Never really rated nike and this confirms why, pity really as some of their stuff looks pretty cool but that’s about it.
The pole straps are quite enticing! The straps on the UD vests are a little cumbersome for mounting your poles; the across-the-chest design seems quick and easy
So great that you did this video! I’ve been using a bladder-pack for long runs, but I’m looking for something lightweight for middle distance runs and racing more bottle-based. As a running Youtuber I know how much work goes into these videos! Keep posting I just subscribed!
Thanks for the great review. What sort of capacity are they claiming for the vest, it looks only around 3lt to me? It look’s more like a prototype than a tried & tested pack
I have a bladder vest from Nathan is one of most popular for long distanses and super lightweight and comfy ❤️
I have this vest as well and can’t recommend it enough. Insane how much you can pack inside the main compartment. Super comfortable fit and ride, great assortment of pockets, and decent included water bottles. I haven’t had a chance to try the pole carry system yet but there definitely are a bunch of extra straps and things that you could use for just about any scenario. so comfy that I also use this as a day pack whenever going on a casual hike with friends
I do have the bat belt that holds my bat phone and bat gu…

Are the Raidlight bottles easy to drink from while running, without having to bend down too much so you loose sight of the road you’re running on? They seem smart with the straws and also sitting high up on the chest. I currently use the Nathan VaporAir 2.0 vest with a hydration bladder and magnet, so I can drink and still see the road/trail, and then the hose just clips magnetically into place again, so I don’t have to think about where to tuck it away while running. I will use that vest for this weekend’s upcoming trail race. If the Raidlight Revolutiv would be easy to drink from without having to look down and lose sight of the road, it would be a good alternative for marathon or even half marathon racing for me though, since it is so light and seems to breathe well and I hate slowing down for aid stations, plus I prefer sipping a little every now and then rather than having to gulp down a full cup at once and irregularly.
For ultras I like liquid calories and many aid stations do not have what I specifically use so I have 6-8 800ml soft flasks that have the powder in them but no water that I carry in my vest and then I fill them up as needed at aid stations. My goal is to time it so that I’m never running with more than 2 full flasks.
The Salomon agile 2 is a very light vest as well, roughly 170 grams.
What size was the Nathan vest? I am about the same build as you.
Great and honest review Loyd. Shame a company like Nike got it so wrong.
I’ve been running with the Salomon for the last 2 years and I like it a lot. I’ll admit that it is an expansive piece of equipment but it’s well worth it. What I like about it it’s its flexibility. You can use only the bottles 2×500 ml and you can also add the blader if need be. I have used it from not carrying water to the full assortment and it works well in any case. If for whatever reason you need to replace one of your bottles as it happened to me, I strongly suggest to buy it somewhere else and not from Salomon. They charge like 30$(CDN) for a replacement 500ml soft flask which is completely abusive. I got like 2 replacements (not Salomon) for the same price on Amazon. In closing, I would make another suggestion that would pretty much apply to any hydration vest. Try to find a replacement caps or bottles equipped with a straw that comes out fo the top of the cap, it makes for an easier usage by not having to bend your neck or pull up on the vest when drinking.
Salomon quality is garbage. I just threw mine away after 1 year after it developed several holes in the front storage areas. It was very comfortable but I don’t want to replace it every year.
Dang, Riz, those vests are at least two generations old there are modern Salomons and Natan vaporKrars which are most common and are actually used among many pros.
Running vest manufactures have got me PISSED off!!! None of them are making vest for a larger person. They seem to think that an XL is a 44 in. chest or smaller. What the hell…XL T-shrts are normally a 48 in. chest size…so why a 44 in. chest in a run vest? They say…sized to fit like a t-shirt….NOT! Believe it or not…there are runners.and power hikers out there that are not some skinny 150 pounder. One of these days, hopefully, one of these vest makers will realize that they are excluding part of the buying public….us larger runners that are out there on the trails who hope someday to be smaller….but till then we seem to be excluded from getting a run vest. COME ON… U.D., Salomon, Nathan, Black Diamond, Osprey….we would love to try one of your vest….but you are not letting us. One day one of these manufactures will wake up and tap into a market that is being denied the ability to run in a vest…and they will cash in…who will it be?…
I would like any of the bladder packs, but I wouldn’t use it enough to justify the kind of money these cost.
What a great vest. I have a trail half marathon coming up, do you suggest a vest or a hand held? There are two aid stations but no cups and with only 1900 feet of gain I should be done under two hours.
The Nathan vapor air pack is the one for me even though it is a little pricey
Hey Seth. Good topic. I use a Nathan fuel belt. 2/ 10oz bottles, small pouch for GU packs.
I’ve only started watching your videos in the last month or so and am addicted. Great content! Subscribed.
I love your enthusiasm for…vests!! Who would’ve thunk it? I’ve never seen you this excited about any shoes.
Nice video! I have a question, there is one race I would like to take part in, it’s called Nízkotatranská stíhačka (NTS) which is an ultra-trail race for single runners in Slovakia. The 106 km long race route with a total positive altitude change of 5740 m and 49km long race with total altitude gain of 2820 m (iTRA certified) goes through the whole main ridge of Low Tatras mountains. This will be my first race of this style and there is also some mandatory equipment. I would like to ask which backpack you would reccomended to me, I tihnk that the Inov8 is looking good fir it. And the equipment: map, GPS, first aid kit, whistle, headlamp and spare batteries or next headlamp, telephone, hardshell jacket, water bottles of at least 1 liter or camelback, and your own cup. Thnaks for everything!!
$100 for a prototype? hahaha! a locally made $30-$40 vest here in the Philippines offers the same, if not more, features. that’s a flimsy product, total waste of money:D
Is it possible to put a round cycling water bottle in the pockets / sleeves that are used to hold the flat water bottles that come with vests?
Thanks for sharing great review…
Have been thinking of a vest for a while and pulled thr trigger after a long run yesterday. Weird coincidence. Ordered the Nathan Vaporzach 2.5L last night. Weight and simplicity were biggest factors. I think 7.2 ounces including the two water bottles. 4 ounces without the bottles
QD: On shorter runs I use Salomon Pulse belt with 250ml soft flask. It can hold also 500ml one but is a bit bouncy with that, so going with smaller one. For longer runs I have Salomon adv skin 5 with 2 x 500ml flasks.
Super cool! There’s a few brands I’d never heard of on here, I’m used to camelbak mostly
3:22… “squeeze lock thing…” I think it’s called I spring barrel? I am not sure though.
I love my Patagonia Slope Runner 4L vest. It’s super comfy and fits really well. I’ll use it for any race above 50mi (handheld is fine for anything 50 and below). Hydrate with whatever electrolyte/sports drink they have and Coke.:)
QD: trail racing I use camblebak nano. It’s perfect for me and very nimble. Love this vest but may have to look into this one for sure.
Sry but if it is a complaint that the vest does not fit a smartphone… buy a cheap $30 mobile and if it is not mandatory by the rules of the race leave the phone at home…
How is cleaning the running packs with a bladder, plus thanks for the video
Hey Seth how would I know what size to get I am the exact same body type as you would I be a small?
Compressport have a great vest Compressport Ultrun S Pack 80g cheat it out
Never seen you so excited for a product! I actually use the ultimate direction vest you mentioned and I like it for long training runs, anything over 8 miles on a hot day and I use this, otherwise a Nathan handheld. I am going to look into the raidlight, but so far I prefer a bladder rather than bottles bouncing on my chest, that looks a bit annoying.
I live in a cold climate so I just run on treadmills with a water bottle, but I’d consider the Nathan.
I ran a 10mile trail race at the weekend and I used my UD Clutch (handheld). It’s a good piece of kit because you just strap to your hand
That looks absolutely pants. Think you were very generous on the scores. Great review
Sorry but I’m more interested in to the cap you’re wearing which one is it if you don’t mind? Thanks
If David Goggins watched this channel he would be saying. “Stop buying shit and run”
Kalenji running packs are great! I have one and it has everything.
I like the CamelBak just because they are the most trusted brand.
Yeah, well, 30$ does not make such a huge difference. So if I were using such things, I would go with Salomon. By the by, check your links. I clicked on both of them for the stated packs and they brought me to Amazon with no result.

Picked up raidlight respnsiv6. 600 flasks are great but the tubing was cut short! Have other same flask tubing goes to bottom of bottles as would expect. Not sure if I simply don’t understand how to use or are they defective. Did your’s come with short drink tubes? Love the vest.
I am a biker and today picked my first running pack at the dollar store for 3lv or $ 1,5, if you believe that. I didn’t even know these existed.
It’s super basic one made in China and mostly meshes, but more than enough for some keys, spare tire and my phone as my bike is weird design and bags can’t be fitted. Can’t beat it at this price.
All that it lacks from these expensive ones are front pockets which I don’t need. It even has bladder.. hanger?
And a built-in whistle in the front buckle. LOL
I have a bladder vest from Nathan is one of most popular for long distanses and super lightweight and comfy ❤️
using a raidlight responsiv 12L for my last 50km TMBT in Sabah.love it.fits everything and some more…
Cool video, I only do aid stations during marathons and half marathons those are the only two distances that I run and it seems to work for me.
Great review Seth!
I was considering a vest this summer preparing for a marathon but did not like the weight and made it with a Nathen bottle
QD: I use aid stations in the marathon alternating between water and sport drink about every 2 miles.
So, I think he likes it. Ha ha ha….. seriously, thanks for an awesome review. This is EXACTLY what I’ve been looking for!! Woo hoo!!
I AM RUNNING 10 -15 PLUS MILES LATELY. THE ONLY THING I BRING WITH ME IS MY TRACKER WATCH, I DON’T EVEN NEED A T SHIRT, AFTER MY FIRST MILE, I TAKE IT OFF
he looks like a completely different person with the moustache but it still looks good.
Another great unbiased review. I’m after a light running vest for the trails. I wont be buying the Nike, what is the best option in your opinion?
awsome info. I’m very happy I found your channel. thanks for all the rescreach.
Surprised Yeti didnt make a hydration pack yet. You know that would win because Jeff loves Yeti
I just bought an Evadict Unisex Trail Running Hydration Gilet 5L (which is about 175 grams) as well as a quiver (which attaches to the back of the gilet) from Decathlon. Both totalled up to less than £40. Planning to use it for an upcoming 100k ultra. Did a dry test with it loading it up with the mandatory items (which require 2 space blankets and a collapsible bowl, among other things) for the event. I also added a 1L hydration bladder to the rear pouch although this pack is not intended for one. It’s a bit tight with everything on it but looking good. I’ve yet to test it because the trails are off limits at the moment. One thing I like about this design is that I don’t have to remove the gilet when I want to attach or remove the trekking poles to the pack. Can be done on the move. With the Nike, the runner would need to have quite a dexterous pair of hands to put back the poles. Not something I would like to do when I’m 60km into the race and my arms are getting noodly. Btw, this gilet has 12 pockets. Add one more of you attach the quiver (it one biiiiig pocket ) to it.
Thanks for the comparison! I’m using the Salomon Adv Skin 12 and besides the broken toggles which I made a video on it’s by far the best pack I’ve used and for sure most comfortable! Using the bigger pack as I want to do longer distances too. Going to search your channel now and see if you’ve reviewed any headlamps I need to grab one for an upcoming race. Cheers
Seth, I’m not sure if it’s just NYC, but all NYRR races including the marathon ban vests for security reasons. So, QOTD, I carry a hand held squirt water bottle (Poland Spring) bought for about $2 (800ml) filled with my own hydration mix which I can use through about 18 miles and then throw it away once drained. My issue with aid stations is that I just can’t get the hang of drinking paper cups on the go and psychologically, I don’t like stopping.
Hey Seth. Which shoe would you recommend for a 15 year old-boy’s 10k (ran a 35.48 10k in a road race last week)Right now i’m using Streak LT4, they are feeling hard on my feet. Good luck with amsterdam, cheering for you!
I also love this vest. Trekking poles can also be attached horizontally using the loops on the bottom of the back of the pack, which is my preferred way to stash poles. Its pretty easy stow them and remove them on the fly.
How I hydrate: I *always* carry water… it’s good to have, and for racing, you’ll feel lighter not having anthing on your back or in your hands, so you’ll feel and actually be faster without the extra burden come race day. I have an older Nathon H2O with a 2L bladder in the back…. I rarely fill it full, but I prefer to NOT be holding anything in my hands. I just wish the Nathan had better and more convenient storage capacity……
One important point, most major marathons do not allow you to wear a vest. I know for sure Boston and Chicago do not allow them. I think New York as well.
Excellent review of some top packs. A year ago I made the move from hydration pack to the Naked Running Band. Wow, what a nice difference to not have something on my back and shoulders. I fully understand where the ultra packs have their place, but so far, the NRB is hands down, my go-to.
Old SW Reno makes a lovely backdrop to this video. Thanks for the comparison!
Don’t forget the environmental factor, if you use your own bottles that means less single use bottles and cups!!!
EVERY single one of those vests are insanely overpriced. Aonijie vest are a quarter the cost and just as feature filled. I’ve had three, and they’ve survived 80 running events in two years and over two thousand miles along with 8 OCRs.
Hi! Do you think that the Salomon Sense 3 Ultra could be a good alternative? (3.88oz / 110g)
It’s bonkers how bad the issues with that pack are. Cheers for the review
If anyone is interested in purchasing a Nathan Sports Hydration Vest/Pack Let me know. I have a few brand new vests that I am selling.
I’ve been running in the Nathan for well over a year, I absolutely love it. No complaints.
I believe in most marathons… you are not allowed to wear vests… as far as Ive seen.
I am from Brazil, and just went to the US on DC, spend 2 weeks there with my uncle, and I bought the Jaybirds X4 because of your channel, man those phones are really great, they are a really good fit, comfortable and with high quality and value. thank you for your great tips!! I will stay connected with this channel… I wish you put on test the ON running shoes to compares them with brooks glycerin…:)
Hears “it’s pretty affordable” gets excited “around $130″ lol I’m so cheap
I went for a 16 mile run in a vest this week, but I tested out taking out the bladder and using the front pockets for 2 x 600 ml bottles, the movement of the bottles on my chest meant my lower back was very sore afterwards which doesn’t happen with the bladder, question of the day, for marathons just the aid stations for drinks and I carry gels on me.
Looks like a video up Cone Peak must be coming soon! Such a great ridge.
Found this channel a while back and so glad I did. I really appreciate how you approach all of this. Helpful. Fun. Non-pretentious(!). Variety of content. You and Seth James Demoor should do a mashup!!! Cheers from Chicago!
