Performance enhancing drugs consist of a variety of substances, including medications, procedures, and even devices that are intended to improve athletic sports performance. Some of these substances are naturally occurring, easily available and completely legal while others are manufactured, illegal, or banned by many sporting organizations.About Performance-Enhancing Drugs There are several types of performance-enhancing drugs, including anabolic steroids, stimulants, human growth hormone and diuretics. Anabolic steroidsare synthetic drugs that mimic or enhance the.Proponents of accepting performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) in sports argue that their harmful health effects have been overstated, that health risks are an athlete’s decision to make, that using drugs is part of the evolution of sports much like improved training techniques and new technologies, and that efforts to keep athletes from using PEDs are overzealous, unproductive, unfairly.”The first ‘effective’ performance enhancing drugs, the amphetamines, which were used widely by soldiers in the Second World War, crossed over into sports in the early 1950s.
These drugs nicknamed la bomba by Italian cyclists and atoom by Dutch cyclists minimize the uncomfortable sensations of fatigue during exercise.”.Detection of Performance Enhancing Drugs in Sports. “Doping” has been part of sports for a long time. Disqualification of cyclist Floyd Landis from the Tour de France in 2008, doping trials in US baseball, and positive tests of olympic athletes are included in a long list of doping cases in cycling or list of doping cases in sports.
Now, with more sophisticated laboratories developing drugs that are virtually.Performance-enhancing substances, also known as performance-enhancing drugs (PED), are substances that are used to improve any form of activity performance in humans. A well-known example involves doping in sport, where banned physical performance–enhancing drugs are. This is known as doping.
Many performance-enhancing drugs are banned by sports’ governing bodies. There are 5 ‘doping classes’, which are categories of banned drugs: Beta blockers are banned in.In this post, we will discuss these drugs and know which PEDs are legal.
Many athletes and bodybuilders use the Performance Enhancing Drugs (PEDs) to enhance their exercise abilities and gain muscle mass. PEDs have become a part of the most sport, especially in endurance sports.Sport enhancing drug used by athletes to enhance performance include Steroids, Amphetamines, Stimulants, Peptide Hormones, Human growth Hormone, and Insulin.

A lot of times, athletes are put under pressure, even at the high school level. During these years of high stress for teens, they may feel pressured to over-achieve in sports, thus turning towards PED use. What most teens don’t know is that PEDs and performance enhancing steroids have harmful side. The first competitive athletes believed to be charged with doping, which is taking drugs and other nonfood substances to improve performance, were swimmers in Amsterdam in the 1860s. Doping, with anything from strychnine and caffeine to cocaine and heroin, spread to other sports over the next several decades. (A1B2C3).
Introduction. The use of performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) by preteenagers and teenagers has increased tremendously over the past decade. This trend is driven by multiple factors, including the decrease in the age of participation in competitive sports; the increase in popularity of team/competitive sports; the focus of the media on thinness in females and muscular bodies in males; pressure.Performance-enhancing drugs in children can also stunt a child’s growth.
Anyone who is actively doping creates a higher risk of liver or heart damage for themselves, including a higher risk of blood clots. 2. It could create an unfair playing field for the sport.

These guys are so lucky that decided to take up watching YouTube videos as a profession instead of cycling. The amount of time i give to YouTube everyday, if i had given that to cycling i would have smoked these dopers
Performance enhancing drugs enhance your performance. I should really be surprised by such a bunch of obsessed idiots?
How come, in the history of cycling doping, Tyler Hamilton is the known name in the “Tyler Hamilton case”? This story is all lamb and no wolf. He was a young man, just starting his life, his innocence was exploited. The names that should be out there, that should be household names, are the doctors and team directors. Of course focus on the victims, but make sure a burning spotlight highlights the perpetrators too.
Notice how small and narrow his shoulders are. This is a big aerodynamic advantage for cyclists, especially in the time trial.
Loved the black and white footage of the Sydney Olympics men’s TT; the course went right down my girlfriend’s street!
I remember reading a few years ago about at least one manufacturer that was producing all natural blood boosters that were claimed to be as effective as the banned EPO.the claim was also that they complained with every national & international sporting code.
Love what Rick said. He and a friend do hill sprint training once a week and always have a pint afterwards. We do the same when we go to races together too
What do you swear by on race day or in training? Have we missed anything, or have you tried any of the things we mentioned successfully or unsuccessfully? Let us know in the comments below! ↓↓
What is it about Americans when they own up to shit? They seem to think it absolves them of any blame.
This Fucker knowingly cheated for the vast part of his professional cycling career, and here he sits, feeling great about himself for “owning up” (when he was cornered and had no other choice).
Sorry, no sympathy from me. The same with Armstrong, he sat there and kinda owned up (cos he had to) his admittance was very contrite and never seemed from the heart and there was nowhere near the full story from him either. Very little integrity shown at any point by either of them.
It gets me even more, as I was a very strong supporter of the Livestrong foundation too.
Dude! Tyler, relax man. Don’t feel so guilty. What you did was and still is part of the job. Cycling is too hard of a sport and you know pan y agua is not real; it’s never been.
I use vitabiotics. Also I’m surprised there’s no mention of sex, which is unusual for this channel. Wasn’t even mentioned in the Runners High video either what’s wrong with you all? From what I’ve read there is a performance boost the following day, as long as you get to sleep early enough.
Respect for been honest, at least your plate is clean, unlike many others. You are still awesome Tyler!
hey, great video! I have a question: how to do ice baths? Is just a really cold water enough, or do you need actual ice? How often should you take one, and how long should it last?
Tyler is the man I loved reading his book. It all really makes sense when you see the kind of pressure the cyclists are up against constantly and the sheer hopelessness and inevitability of loss if you DON’T dope to keep up. I don’t particularly blame any of them at all, they were still racing with the best of the best and it made for some absolutely stellar Tours. Just a shame we may never see what a human can do WITHOUT this stuff on a bike that would be an awesome tour to see.
I still respect the guy, i thought he would talk about how the doping made him actually feel, was it a high type feeling, or just a feeling of so much energy and strength. like you could ride hard forever. and did you still have to train real hard., or just go ride.
The more I read about the Nike shoes, the more I’m against them. Eg Tim Hutchings on the Olympic Marathon Trials coverage was vociferous on the unfair advantage they give.
Running in the heat can enhance your running when the weather cools down.
Tyler loved melding his body into the machine. In the beginning that connection and performance was all him. The team’s enhancement fogged the connection. It sacrificed his sole, until he told the truth to the world. Telling the truth took the same strength as completing the Tour. He deserves a Yellow Jersey for being a champion!
That black guy as definitely on roids from the way he for so defensive
Monster Mean Bean gets me going the best before a hard physical effort
Believe you’re going to run faster. Racing is hugely mental.
Thank you so much Tyler. Your beautiful story about how truth can set us free is so uplifting to me. God Bless you Tyler, and thanks for your example of courage.
A cheat is a cheat. Seams to be a really nice guy, but still a god dam cheat. Also a full grown adult, so he knew exactly what he was doing. Nice little movies, soft music, and little chat he’s giving, still a god dam cheat. And it was all for money… Don’t feel one bit sorry for this guy. Should not be allowed to be involved with cycling on any level.
I absolutely love Skrillex Bangarang. I always want to run super hard on that song and I never really massively struggle
Look Tyler there is not one single person that has any understanding of pro cycling that has ever lost any respect for you. Your talent, commitment to the sport and ultimately your incredible character is nothing short of a true role model. First class man.
I use bicarbonate of soda. 1/4 teaspoon with a glass of water / juice 30 mins before running. It’s helps to slow down the affects of lactate
yeah it’s interesting to hear him talk and i totally understand why he did it. but this story misses out the part where he got busted and banned before he was called to talk to a grand jury. if that hadn’t have happened and he had more success, the whole doping mindset may not have seemed so dark for him.
Yes true, but you know what is the best legal performance enhancer?
Consistent training.
According to a transcript of Farah’s 2015 interview with Usada (US Anti-Doping Agency) – which has been obtained by BBC’s Panorama – Farah altered his account with investigators, saying he had forgotten about the L-carnitine injections in April 2014.
Great tips! Not sure about the Beet Juice though, that stuff doesn’t look like it tastes nice
This is a super sad story. How would you armchair moralists have acted given the same choice? Easy to judge now…
The truth will set you free. Yes it will hurt, but the pain of holding on hurts more
Genuine person. Honest good person! We all make mistakes in life but how do we learn and evolve as people!
I am surprised, pleasantly, about how many people here are commenting on how Tyler is being disingenuous about his drug use. He seems like a “nice guy” but playing the passive victim role is bullshit and true cycling fans know this. Lance is a douchebag and it is easy to hate on him but he was the “Best” of his era dope or no dope. Tyler would have gone on to win or place in TDF with use of doping on his own team and if he never got busted, he’d had sailed away into the sunset without any harm. Tyler and EVERY professional cyclist of that era knew that doping was only way to compete and Tyler even said in past that when he was offered the “good stuff”, it was a rite of passage and proof of how good of a cyclist he was because they only offered such regimens to the best of the best who could compete at the highest level.
Tyler, you are truly an amazing human being, and your deep, sincere values are so very inspiring. Cycling lived through such a dark time, but with bright, powerful voices like yours we will overcome. Take care
I don’t believe this dude was never not on anything. I call bullshit bro sorry
5 grams spirulina with 300 mg caffeine for me. Spirulina is a wonderful nutrient for exercise efficiency and overall health
I just did a presentation on the Nike Vaporfly in my uni business class this morning! Love your great content, keep up the good work ✨
The sad thing is that Hamilton was one of America’s most talented cyclists in the late 90’s/ early 2000’s
Sometimes a pinch of ground up unicorn horn with fairy wing tea. Or consistent quality training and diet, good rest and some cross training when I need a change. That’s what has worked for me over the years. And reasonable expectation on what I can do.
Bet if they were in Premier League Soccer they would never have gotten, but don’t watch UCI Tour De France anymore cause there all on drugs aka Greg Le Mond.
A good guy for sure who was exceptional on his bike long before anyone stuck a needle into him. I had the pleasure of traveling a little and racing with him and saw more than enough to attest to his character. Glad to see you looking and feeling better these days Tyler!
In my opinion Armstrong and Hamilton are still great Bike Riders.
Yes they used Doping but nevertheless they trained harder than many of the people who a complaining about them
You forgot to mention having asthma, seems to work for most pro cyclists
Really how to judge such a persob and such a difficult one to call. Imagine being a young guy riding close to the pinnacle of ur sport and all you have ever dreamed of is a chance to ride in the tour and perhaps challenge for a stage win and then b faced with a choice of taking a red pill and a path will be opened to you or refuse and most likely be shown the door sooner if not later. So unfair to be put in such a situation and the sport and the politics, corruption and all the bullshit around it backing people into making these impossible decisions. Its something like being tempted with the forbidden fruit when at first it seems relatively harmless as u want to try and take a glimpse of what it can offer you and from then on its a slippery slope on a journey you are no longer in control
The sad thing is that doping or not he was a great bike racer, brave and strong. Can’t see much of that past the big label that simply reads DOPER, and that is a real shame
Incredible guy. I hate the people, businesses, man kind that created this whole situation and ruined young athletes intentions of just simply loving a sport as amazing as cycling. What a shame that companies and sponsors would rather win and risk people’s lives. Terrible sad times.
And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, for they loved not their lives even unto death.
Revelation 12:11 ESV
I stumbled upon your channel recently and I love it. A true runners quality content. Well written and fun too.
Keep up the good work, and I hope you will reach at least 1 million subscribers soon, as you deserve.
I have no issue with Tyler telling the truth. Indeed, I applaud him doing so. But, he also cheated as much as Lance Armstrong, Jan Ullrich or any others. The tour then was dopers racing dopers. Whoever won then is still the winner, of that race. Losers in other ways. I think I would much prefer to know Tyler rather than Lance.
Thanks for a great channel! I often suffer with tight calves the morning after a run, I run a freezing cold shower over my legs straight after a run, this is a good practice am I correct? ♂️ thanks
100% of guys are on gear, maybe the QB isn’t on Test, but definitely HGH
To careers!! in full knowing!! watt you are doing!! Why nobody!! tell how amazing!! It is to fly up the mountains!! and to destroy!!the rest of the!,
if they drug tested the nfl, that would wipe out the league faster than covid-19
Listening to Tyler’s experiences makes me a little angry and sad about Lance’s vilification and destruction by the entire world. He was far from the only rider using performance enhancing substances. The pressure to compete and win is immense.
Fresh squeezed orange juice! It’s natures energy drink. I have a full glass before every run. If I don’t, I lose about 10-20 seconds per mile.
My personal mantra, Breathe in, breathe out. And don’t stop moving your feet. It’s pathetic I know but it works
“Performance enhancing drug” extends beyond a “steroid”, imo. It can also be anything that NUMBS or enhances the MIND and body, imo. Cortisone shot, cocaine, adderall, advil, CBD, THC, test, and all of the designer anabolics, etc. Performance is all that matters in sports. “Enhancing” does not always have to be an (obvious) improvement, it can also be something that keeps you in the game as a pawn, when you should not be. MAJORITY of athletes are using something, illegal or not. It’s a moral problem, not a legality one. Drug= controlled substance. All food is a controlled substance by the FDA. Folks don’t like religion and politics mixed. Well, it’s the same with money and sports for me. The LOVE of money is the root of all evil.
Hell yeah Vaporfly next% ran 18:43 park run, 2 weeks earlier ran 20:13 in Hoka Carbon X
I’ve put my name down for Alphafly’s LOL
I have a great deal of respect for Tyler Hamilton. Kudos to him for making this video, being truthful about his past and present and I hope that he gets back to his roots and enjoys cycling the way it’s meant to be.
When you want to ride and be part of the team, I get that. Whole sport needs to change, many were doping.
These US Postal guys (as well as others) they’ve got mental battle scars they’ll take to the grave. Even now many years after their competitive racing careers are finished, they seem locked in a moment in history.
If the whole pro peleton is going to take drugs they should at least take some fun ones. The Galibier decent on acid would be a real spectator sport.
I always have a cup of coffee before going out on a run. Not sure if it’s just in my head, but I believe it to be a stimulant. It does it for me.
So refreshing to see someone not blame everybody else for their problems.
0:26: but performance enhancers or not, Lance naturally has a strong arm anyway!
Sportsmen should look at PEMF as a drug-less safer alternaitve
Tyler. Thanks. A brutal and straightforward question. Is it known whether use of EPO in the early or middle part of a career has continued positive effects for the rest of time and leads to additional longevity as a pro cyclist? There are a few out there who should not be. One of them is Spanish. It bothers me a lot.
Lololololol biggest clue he’s lying is how defensive he got as soon as he called him out
my running mantra, “all them people are still in bed and im gonna beat their times” XD
Great interview!
What is the name of the soundtrack (especially last one 6:18 piano one)?:)
a good way to hit a PR is also when you are angry with someone/something, than you just go out of your house and you wont even realize how fast you are going:)
I would have taken the same path as Tyler if I had the talent. Luckily I never had to make that decision.
Make doping legal. They are all adults. No normal person would every cycle such distances and with that intensity anyway.
Banana 30 mins before works for me. Another great video guys thank you
I did a coffee enema one day and then went for a long run, felt like cheating, hydration, coffee infusion and completely empty bowels made for one amazing PB that i was not expecting or aiming for
This is a really odd one… but.. a glass of warm, neat Ribena with 1 teaspoon of sugar has worked wonders for me!
This is fantastic, I appreciate the honesty. I have done competitive cycling and all natural powerlifting. A former world record power lifter in my weight class was significantly weaker than me when he was off the drugs. So I’ve been on the other side of this as well.
This was the European peloton. Lance may have been a prize jerk but he wasn’t pretending that he didn’t know what he was doing. The only way to stop people using PEDs is to have concentrated testing. We have people drugging for Amateur racing so don’t pretend that the pros are going to be Lily white and feeling bad about making millions.
He looks so much healthier than he did in the old doping scandal interviews.
Greetings and good video. Just because some drugs are legal doesn’t mean they are any good for you. The reason they are legal is because everybody is addicted to a battery of useless drugs… Bye.:)
I don’t mind people making mistakes… it happens. The real problem is when they 1. Shame those who do tell the truth, or 2. Try pretend they actually didn’t really do anything wrong if everyone did it…
This guy seems to be on the right path
I was tempted to do performance enhancing drugs for the 13knm commute to work. After watching this in glad I had the willpower to say no.
In calisthenics or gymnasts, is there positive effects of doping? i think that in cali u dont need doping(hormons) cause how much heavy you re is bad for you, and thats dopings are bad for muscles elasticity
Altitude tents don’t work apparently, it’s actually the barometric pressure at altitude that leads to adaptations, you can go into a hyperbaric chamber I think to emulate it. Also didn’t see bicarbonate of soda in the list, acts as a buffer for lactic acid.
I try to mix beet root into my food, I can’t stomach the juice, yuk!
Indurain will never admit his doping but Jesus, he’s a fucking horse! And to beat Pantani on a climb!? Ok
This was a super intriguing part of history, when doping was the epitome of cycling.. It makes you wonder how some of these guys nowadays are ending up with more advanced times, maybe in 20 more years we’ll find out why.
Great video guys. Have you done one about core/strengthening workouts before? If not, something you could do? I would definitley find it really useful!
Dude, bro all Steroid Players in the National steroid league take intraveneous steroids directly into their peeholes before, during, and after each game. And then after the games they take a bath in steroids and drink steroid infused water and eat a bowl of steroids. The ONLY reason that ANY athelete that EVER WON ANYTHING EVER IS THAT THEY TAKE STEROIDS.
Coffee, bran muffins and a crowd…you’ll be amazed how fast you can get….all the way to the loo.
Very surprised you didn’t mention my personal favourite. Wearing a cape hasn’t actually got me a PB, but I think I look great.
Tyler on the postal service team made biking exciting for me. I do not condone taking the drugs at all, but we all bought into this with our expectations of what’s possible. I will never forget his winning tdf stage with broken collar bone. Thank you for sharing your thoughts
100 percent of players are on drugs or something number 1 is pain killers
Don’t blame the cyclists blame the money that corrupts all sports.
Wow, that was a very emotional little video. Especially the bit when he could just finally unleash the truth to the jury and get the pressure of the lie off his system. And then admitting it to his children. Its funny how much power the truth can actually hold.
I loved Tyler when he was on the bike. No reason not to love him nowadays!
I love cycling, cycling has been a huge part of my life. It is so important to me on a personal level. I could not imagine having this feeling being tainted to fulfill a dream by doping. I commend you Mr. Hamilton. You have a bravery that surpasses those who desire fame. Cycling is a beautiful thing. Thank you for showcasing the dark side of cycling on a professional level. Now if we could only eliminate the doping so that we can honor the true heroes of cycling that could be, from those that grew up with a dream and accomplished the greatest feats, like the great major Taylor.
This is my third week as a Furloughed driver and I’ve lost motivation to go running. I usually go running 3 or 4 times a week on average I run for about 4 miles and I’m build up my distance an stamina. After watching some items on the running channel I feel motivated go on a nice run. I’d just like to say that eating beetroot really does help to run faster. I tried it last year and didn’t expect any result but when I looked my time I was about 1½ minutes faster over a usual run and it didn’t take quite as much effort. I’m supposed to be training for the Equinox 24 in September, I’ll see how things go.
I’ve said it many times. Tyler found himself at a moral and ethical crossroads and made the wrong turn. He was caught, punished and found contrition through that process. I’ve read his books and many others from cyclists from that era. I’ve seen countless interviews with him and he always attempts to answer honestly and with a modesty that displays integrity. Very few of his contemporaries do the same.
The issue with Tyler is his slightly uneasy style when he’s interviewed. Many people misunderstand him as he’s not brash and challenging like many other ex cyclists. He is not the easiest interviewee and he always seems uncomfortable in front of the lens. I hope he gains more confidence over time in front of the camera as his story is one of the most compelling from that era and the honesty in which he speaks about his experiences is far more truthful and insightful than some of his more famous peers.
Caffine is only a performance enhancer until the stomach starts rumbling
You just can’t beat the tunes when you need to bring the mind to another place
Surprised just run more mileage wasn’t one, and surprised Low heart rate training wasn’t another…but otherwise great
Great video as always. Great to see the Running Channel is nearly reaching there PB at 100k subs and after that 200k and beyond!
I have found recently that having a good beat in my head helps my run routine pass more quickly. Thanks loads to Anna’s profile on ear buds. Really dislike head phones and buds blotting out my environment, but when I saw Anna covering those Aftershokz bone conductor phones I got a pair of Titanium’s and they’re great. I guess in lieu of HIIT sessions, a daily 1’40” plank is helpful.
Empty stomach so all my blood is getting used in cardio and not partially for digesting food.
Wow! Thank you for that truth Tyler. Would that everybody could manage to tell their real story.
I advise Matcha tea instead of coffee.
It releases caffeine more slowly to the body then coffee and has a list of many more health benefits that are great for runners.
Source of different anti oxidants and compounds including:
l-Theanine which gives a relaxing state of mind.
2 types of Chlorophyll that protects against the sun uv radiation and great for your overall skin health.
EGCG which is cell protecting and endurance enhancing.
Its also a natural source of vitamine C, chromium, zinc and magnesium.
Would you please do a gear review on night running kits? I’m tempted to try a hand torch but I’m afraid it’ll be like running in a disco.
I listened to a talk where a runner mentioned nasal aids, clips you put in your nostrils for better breathing. Any thoughts on those? I never heard of them for running.
You repeat the same mistake all over the internet. Eliud didn’t run a marathon. How could he? The marathon demands competition in a not controlled route. He runned the distance of a marathon. When he runs in olympics the marathon under two hours yes this is an official marathon record.
You knee it was wrong but still did it. Why should anyone have sympathy for you? You doped for a long time and were part of a shameful period of cycling history. How many clean young riders did you and your fellow dopers keep off the podium who will never know that level of success? You told the truth under force… that is shameful too. Did you give back all the money? All of you cheaters should just go away.
To hear a cyclists come out with the truth is inspiring i wish others would as well as there are many stories
end of the day, all trainers are performance enhancers. we are meant to be bare foot hobbits! XD XD
Do you know what would be great? Watching the whole interview. All I ever see on YouTube are snippets of interviews from Graham Bensinger. Hundreds of snippets. So annoying.
There should be a fine for naming the cheating Texan in videos…
how about supplements? I see ads for EPO Boost, which includes Echinacea Purpurea Extract and supposedly makes you generate more oxygen carrying haemoglobin to increase your aerobic ability.
…effects of performance enhancing drugs…….well, it enhances performance for one…….
A couple of white guys get popped for PEDs and now “everyone juices”
If the UCI hadn’t been corrupt none of this would have got this far and Armstrong would have been thrown out of the 1999 TOUR, doping will never be wiped out while the organising body are complicit.
Personally I can’t put all the blame on the athlete, there are pressures from all around to succeed… sponsors, doctors, family, etc. For a nineteen year old or even U23 rider, the maturity level might not be there yet and the athlete can be manipulated to do things they would not otherwise think about without the outside pressure. The need to win is built into humans as a survival tool and reinforced by many parts of society. That being said, being top of a sport is mostly a first world problem. In the developing world the real problems are more basic, like water, food and shelter.
Great Guy Should be president really. Get some common sense back into things and some truth.
Corporate poison. What ever and who ever it ruins for quarterly profit.
They all do steroids. Especially the guy saying that a stupid person would say that lol.
a froome le dio positivo, segun informacion del periodismo, siempre una pantalla y siguen apareciendo casos mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
At least Tyler does seem to have a conscience…. unlike he who must not be named! (it’s not Voldermort!)
Shame about the music in the background. This small documentary would have had far more impact without any music, in my humble opinion……………………
When you get tired swing your arms. It’s very easy and it magically helps you to move your legs faster.
Good stuff guys. I can use all the tips I can get. I don’t think I’m focusing enough on recovery. Thanks. Beet Juice Yuk.
Jermaine, cut the crap. Drug testing in the NFL is a joke today and it was an even bigger farce when you played. The catch rate for PED users is so laughable in football that you would have to be an idiot not to use. Nice try with the cop analogy, too…
Read his book. Its really good. And how can anyone of us throw stones? He managed to admit, come clean, apologize. Tyler its all good now. Enjoy the bike ride, let the wind blow through your hair. Life is sweet. Enjoy your life.
What about Salbutamol? Very easy to buy without a prescription.
I was hoping to hear some details medical /technical about what these drugs supposedly do and why they are banned. I’ve heard several doctors question why they are banned in the first place vs letting all athletes use these drugs similar to how they use approved supplements. That would be one way to eliminate the cheating aspect. But no idea if you plan to cover these details and just don’t have the time to listen to 1:20 podcast hoping to hear the part I’m interested in.
