Use to run without listening to music, did eventually get earphones for it so it can drown out the noise of other people running but after you listen to your playlists regularly it gets a bit boring so I’m considering switching to no music
I hold my 6min/km at 120bpm music. Disco remixes are best. Staying Alive baby! ✌️✌️
The best Headphones for Running are the ones musicians use on stage they never fall out of your ear and are very comfortable.
If only when I go to gym I get good music and get super motivated to keep going
Definitely aftershokz for the win. They negate all the negatives that Heather lists. Get all the benefits of listening to music and still hear everything around you and be able to carry on a conversation too. There’s a reason they are the only headphones approved by the London Marathon!

I listen to music/ podcasts. That motivational song has to be Eye of the Tiger
the people who disliked are the people who had to clean the set lol
This with the dunkirk soundtrack sounds like he’s plotting to kill someone
At parks I do on my own runs not at races and I play it outloud but I don’t blast it and when I past walkers I go around and turn music down and it’s because I can’t use earbuds cause I listen to breathing and surroundings but I still like music
really realistic almost nailed it escept mickeys voice and rocks need to practice rockys voice
Try Aftershokz bone conduction headphones. it allows for your ears to still be open so you can hear your surroundings. The new areo model is amazing, extremely light weight, wireless, bluetooth connection.
Great videos, please keep sharing with us….you’re a LEGEND!
I’ve started running again after a 25yrs break. I’m now 43 yrs and been running for 4 Months and definitely got the bug again! Started running 4 miles at 36 mins and now down to sub 28 . What training sessions would you recommend if I’m looking to race 5/10k’s at 6m/mile pace. I would like to incorporate the 5k cross country ‘Park Run’ that I do every Saturday morning. If you could help that would be great.
Thanks again SIR Mo!
Chris
Get stoned and bang some Verve of Pink Floyd. Really gets me in the zone to switch of and do some distance.
being a dream theater fan makes this difficult since i can only do it on my long runs and sometimes the time sig changes can make me fall over.
Running without music is character building. Running with music is cheating.
wireless in-ear-buds connected to your watch and we are talking 10-15g of excess probably not measurable at all
I would never use music on 5km race but I would probably not leave my house without music on steady/endurance 1-2h run for fun (or easy workout). Even on fast 10-15km run as well.
But I would NEVER EVER NEVER take over the ears headphones as you showed in this video at 00:26 and/or the phone that is 120-150g 😉
I loved this video so much, I made a version with an alternative more dramatic score: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IUyqecwvCqw
I’m going to have fun editing music into the background of this
hehe sync the foot steps better it didn’t feel as believable. but good job
Foals The Runner.
The lyrics and the tempo make me want to run through walls!
“…Oh, if I fall down, fall down
Then I know to keep on running…”
“….Loneliness of the long distance runner
Shadow, come closer, so I’ll go on further…”
Great song, perfect for running when you’re getting into your stride! ♂️✌
I can’t stop myself singing to this song whenever, wherever I listen to this.
Anyone?
Aftershock bone conducting headphones. They’re light, and the sound is great and almost on a par with in ear phones without all the negatives. Can still hear everything around you so no safety issues.
This just shows you how music is one of the most important parts of a film. It can make the most simple things feel epic.

@ 2:14 I’m sorry but from just that point from two minutes and fourteen seconds, without the music it just has me in stitches with laughter.

I have recently gone back to using music during Z1/Z2 recovery runs only for company as I usually run alone and I find those type of runs more enjoyable with music.
adele sounds like such a bad bitch singing this. damn. this song is such a piece of art. adele is a legend.
Who knew after 3 years I finally found this song extremely good

Hi Mo, First I would like to thank you for all these videos, they’ve been truly helpful!
I’d like to ask if you could do a video on running technique and balance between step length vs frequency and also if you could do a series on mistakes to avoid!
Thank you
when you realize that all your old favorite songs came drone Charlie Puth
This would actually work as the cold open to a movie about a boxer who’s really bored of boxing.
fun fact Rolling in the Deep give Adele her first Grammy for Record of the year Song of the year Best Music Video
I listen to podcasts, I figured out very quickly that I run faster if I don’t hear my breathing, also concentrating on something else also helps against the pain xD! I don’t use a phone, music on garmin gps and bluetooth earphones (Jaybird Vista, don’t use ipods, they suck for running) are so much better!
Did you guys know that the girl from the video is Samara Weaving love her❤️
I use AirPods Pro and mostly listen to Podcasts while running
I have a race in 5 days and I want to know what I should eat
There’s a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and it’s bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ‘head and sell me out and I’ll lay your ship bare
See how I leave with every piece of you
Don’t underestimate the things that I will do
There’s a fire starting in my heart
Reaching a fever pitch and its bringing me out the dark
The scars of your love remind me of us
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all
The scars of your love they leave me breathless, I can’t help feeling
We could have had it all (you’re gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep (tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand (you’re gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat (tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
Baby I have no story to be told
But I’ve heard one on you and I’m gonna make your head burn
Think of me in the depths of your despair
Making a home down there ’cause mine sure won’t be shared
The scars of your love remind me of us (you’re gonna wish you never had met me)
They keep me thinking that we almost had it all (tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could’ve had it all
Rolling in the deep
You had my heart inside your hand
But you played it with a beating
Throw your soul through every open door
Count your blessings to find what you look for
Turned my sorrow into treasured gold
You pay me back in kind and reap just what you sow
we could’ve had it all
We could’ve had it all (tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
It all, it all, it all, (you’re gonna wish you never had met me)
We could have had it all (you’re gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep (tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside of your hand (you’re gonna wish you never had met me)
And you played it to the beat (tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
We could’ve had it all (you’re gonna wish you never had met me)
Rolling in the deep (tears are gonna fall, rolling in the deep)
You had my heart inside your hand (you’re gonna wish you never had met me)
But you played it, you played it, you played it, you played it
To the beat.
my music lesson is learing this with BOOMWHACKERSSSS YEET
NEVER! I listen to my own body my breathing and my feet hitting the ground.. I can guage running cadence better that way and make adjustments if I need to.
Charlie you suck after using BTS, you performed with Jungkook n doesn’t even know how to spell his name.
I was gonna say that we have Charlie Puth fans in Kenya, Africa but then most of you will think that I just want attention.
I have an Apple Watch and AirPods so I don’t need to bring my phone when I run with music
Life is full of noise, the last thing I need when running is to stuff my ears with more of it.
Garmin Music Editions or Apple Watch + Bluetooth In Ears offer all the benefits without needing extra devices or cables
I use sports headphones on my run: not worried about losing them and stay well in place. I almost always run with music unless I’m in a group / along a road where I need to be fully aware of my surroundings / feel like not having any noise for a bit (on long runs, I usually stop / start music several times).
I train a lot on my own and when I need to go for long and easy runs, I do tend to find it all gets pretty boring after a while otherwise.:p
I run with music. When I started going to the track there’s people coming and going and I was really self conscious. Music helped my close them out and focus on myself. I’m more confident now but I still need something to help me relax when strangers are around. (Obviously, I’m a recreational runner and could never handle the mental stress of a race)
As i get older, music is not as important to my mental state as it used to.
When I’m running I like to run. That’s it. Live in the moment and be fully aware of my body and my surroundings. And if I’m in an urban area then I have a responsibility to others to be like that. I hate runners, pedestrians, cyclists (?!) who wear headphones they’re annoying and potentially dangerous.
I love exercise with music using an IEM. However recently my ear wax dried up. Even though I cleaned every 2-3 days. Doctor say using an ear bud is the caused.
that ending lmfao crick crick crick “yyyaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy” crick crick crick “yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy”
It’s best to run at music with the bpm matching your stride. Like 175bpm 180bpm. You can adjust the tempo of a song on GarageBand.
@GTN could you do a video on music during swimming? Would love to get recommendations on waterproof options!
I tried running with music once and it went horribly. It’s hard for me to keep my tempo
we’re rolling in deep in this 2020 at home with this quarantine
If i train alone i always listen to music. But I listen to metal, which pushes a lot. In a group I do not feel like it is necessary.
My brother listens to music loud in one ear when we run. So rude and annoying. Don’t do this.
When you realize this is what Stallone looked and sounded like without the music
Why does he sound like a Minecraft character when he’s getting punched in the gut
drum and bass mixes all day every day. Helps me keep a perfect cadence with the snare on the right foot.

Solo runs or long runs where I could spend time on my own I use aeropex linked to Forerunner 645music, but when running in a group or against the clock I have no music.
My heart race increases and wont settle with music so I always run with out now

*you just want attention *
I just have to realize that the song is 9 years old… Wow and I actually hear it every day..
Long slow runs its podcasts all the way for me. Currently Russel Brands ‘under the skin’ I love it as he uses big words I don’t understand so I am mentally challenged as well lol.
Damm, I was 5 years old when this song came out. It really gives me nostalgia ti when I was going to pre-school with the older brother and sisters, even though I am still young. Idk, I just feel like an old man.
these are great to laugh at but at same time very easy to input music and make almost a completley different experience
Amazed at no mention of bone conduction earphones. Come on Heather, try some Aftershokz.
You have my respect if you are listening to this after 9 years.
Awesome all comments or answers and explanations from the Professor were great…lot’s of of good knowledge in one video. Big thanks
I just got a pair of bone conducting headphones that have a built in mp3 player…. so no phone needed. and at only 30g aren’t adding any weight.
Running without music helps you stay focused on your form and breathing.
The brief times I ran outside with music, id suddenly run quick paces because of the tempo of the songs and my form would also be all over the place.
Only time I might consider bringing music is if I’m gonna do some 2 hr run.
Bellbottoms got me under 25 min 5k. Best running song of all time.
Aftershocks bone conducting headphones pair to your watch. No phone and nothing in your ears
Sennheiser momentum, with some good psytrance, always look twice when crossing roads 😉
No you should not run to music. One should always be aware of their surroundings. There was a time when I didn’t think I could drive somewhere or go running without music… until I tried it.
Hey! Check out my BGM for this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzsxJxj4008
Dale Like si no entiende el Ingles ;-; pero aun así escuchas esta música UwU
I can’t imagine going back to anything else after using Aftershokz. Also, I dare anyone to run a 5k without music and then run one with your favorite music and see if you don’t beat your time. Especially if the songs inspire you. Eminem Lose Yourself and Whitney Houston One Moment in Time always makes me finish strong on race day.
I like to hear how I breath.
(acknowledge how I breath, I mean)
Hi Heather, try these AirPod “ear hooks”. They work wonders keeping them in your ears during running. Never had one fall out yet. EarBuddyz 2.0 Ear Hooks and Covers Accessories Compatible with Apple AirPods 1 & 2 or EarPods Headphones/Earphones/Earbuds (3 Pairs) (Sky Blue) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07GV8BNGW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RXdfFb7MSPJRM
insane how this song is 3 years old. its like it came out yesterday
Interesting stuff.
I used to commute across central London at night with dance music at full volume, it made the whole thing feel quite extreme but fun with sprinting to dodge cars etc.:)
However, as a general rule I find no music + listening to my breathing is better for pacing myself.
I’m a Turk I like watching you very much❤️✌️❤️
You are the example of the person I am I also run 3000 meters
..love this guy. can’t wait to see him crush the world marathon majors
Long time tak running karna it not easy fat jati h so heads off MO FARAH
Sotomayoroo a to sip sib dlc sl wo rvioqo toros eo fo ero a h??
On the cons: nowadays you don‘t need your phone for music anymore. Most people already have streaming enabled wearables. For the headphones: after some research I found the Jabra Elite 75t which are amazing. They are sweat proof, sit perfectly in the ear and have a hear-through function allowing you to hear traffic or anything around you should you be running on busier roads of paths. I swear on them. I used to have the first gen airpods which started to run out of battery after 20 minutes. Really disappointing. Maybe the new ones improved….
When you get with your new coach, you should let us know some of the things you’ve changed in your training to transition from 5k/10k to the marathon. Thanks!
im back after 8 long years gone can’t believe haven’t listened to it since 2012
I used to listen to music when I started running because I needed something to drown out the sound of my intense breathing but as I kept going with it, I started getting bored with music and started listening to poodcasts/audiobooks etc. Eventually, that got kind of boring too so now I just run without anything but my phone so I can keep track of distance and time. I’m thinking of buying a fitwatch or something so that I can ditch my phone too and just run freely. It’s been quite the evolution haha
Starting off running I think music is great to help people get into it. But now I’m training a lot more often I never listen to music anymore. I’m addicted to that “mid race mental battle” feeling and I want to get used to it when I train!
epic, i love to use music to increase distances. Thanks good episode
I’ve come here uncountable times since 2013 when I first discovered this song, I’m not gonna get bored of hearing this voice.
You’ve just ruined one of my fav movies! Ha! Hilarious stuff.
Oh-oh, ooh
You’ve been runnin’ round, runnin’ round, runnin’ round throwin’ that dirt all on my name
‘Cause you knew that I, knew that I, knew that I’d call you up
You’ve been going round, going round, going round every party in L.A.
‘Cause you knew that I, knew that I, knew that I’d be at one, oh
I know that dress is karma, perfume regret
You got me thinking ’bout when you were mine, oh
And now I’m all up on ya, what you expect?
But you’re not coming home with me tonight
You just want attention, you don’t want my heart
Maybe you just hate the thought of me with someone new
Yeah, you just want attention, I knew from the start
You’re just making sure I’m never gettin’ over you
you’ve been runnin’ round, runnin’ round, runnin’ round throwing that dirt all on my name
‘Cause you knew that I, knew that I, knew that I’d call you up
Baby, now that we’re, now that we’re, now that we’re right here standing face-to-face
You already know, already know, already know that you won, oh
I know that dress is karma (dress is karma), perfume regret
You got me thinking ’bout when you were mine (you got me thinking ’bout when you were mine)
And now I’m all up on ya (all up on ya), what you expect? (oh baby)
But you’re not coming home with me tonight (oh no)
You just want attention, you don’t want my heart
Maybe you just hate the thought of me with someone new
Yeah, you just want attention, I knew from the start
You’re just making sure I’m never gettin’ over you, oh
What are you doin’ to me, what are you doin’, huh?

When everyone’s in danger, Every one should remember: Falun Dafa is Good. Truthfulness, compassion and forbearance is Good! Pray for the world
Nice to listen to what other runners do. Funnily, you didn’t have anyone who said “NEVER!” Is this a city phenomenon, to block out the surrounding noise? I’m a never listen to anything runner, even when I’m on my own, I love the silence and listening to my own body and saying hello to everyone!
When I started running and participating in events, I listened to music all the time for self-motivation. Now, I only use it in treadmill runs to suppress the loud sound of the conveyor belt.
On outside runs, I enjoy the peacefulness and listening to the sounds of nature and I always find the motivation to run within myself, without the use of crutches (=music).
I trained for Ironman races using music on all my swims, rides and runs. I have no problem racing well without music on race day. I conclude it is better to use the music to get the work done than to not get the work done.
Running with nothing is best. Get away from tech all together. Far too distracting taking a phone out.
I look back with this song and feel like old man Logan throughout all these years
Whoever is actually throwing those dishes is incredibly accurate

I feel bored, who too like this comment
Who not say me what you doing and I try it too thx xD
I don’t run with music. It’s an issue of safety, unfortunately there’s too many examples where female runners have been assaulted or otherwise harrassed, and also when running in green area or trail a desire to enjoy nature. And I also have to say I consider it a crutch. I personally think motivation should come from within.
a good point is when it is Raceday the music is gone. I guess I’ll have to wean myself off of it.
Music is a must for me, first of all, I use it to drown out the world, seems silly to me to an individual sport with others. Second, 80s music I find works best, or anything with a cut tempo for running, I do however like to listen to dubstep, trance, and trap, for cycling. I do run/ride without music, just not as long, far, or putting much into it.
I use a Garmin 645 music, so I don’t carry anything extra. I use treks air headphones, so I can hear sounds around me. If I was in a group I wouldn’t use headphones. I’m never going to be an elite runner, so I don’t worry that music might negatively affect my performance.
why he only has few hits?
why he isn’t getting bigger?
why most of his songs are underrated tho he’s super popular?
why? why? why?
I used to run with music but then my pacing was really bad so I began running with a metronome app.
I listen to an audiobook to zone out. Yes, I always run alone. My headset still allows me to hear my environment, so I feel it is quite safe.
I alwys thought he was saying throwing that turtle on your neck
Great job talking about music! I always do my cycling indoor sessions and gym workouts learning English with videos of GTN! (If I wrote something wrong, please tell me)
I never listen to anything when I run. Don’t like stuff in my ears…
2020de hala dinleyenler
Have to have a strict no music rule, gotta focus in on my breathing and what is around me. Plus if i become dependent on music for a long distance run and my phone dies I have lost that dependency and I don’t want that affecting me haha
Galen rupp just won the Chicago. I want to see you two race in the marathons that would be awesome
Each to their own but I’ve always run with music, not excessively loud but I do find with the Apple AirPod Pro’s they can be set to amplify ambient noise so hearing traffic is actually enhanced in this mode which is good. Podcasts are great for slow long runs too as they tend to slow you down. What is interesting is that I have a handful of favorites songs that I tend to listen to whilst running or listen to before a race. When I hear them on the radio when not exercising I have an emotional reaction and often it makes me want to go for a run.
i disagree with the safety aspect this is almost like saying that deaf people can’t run or race.
He’s new picture is the dumbest thing I ever saw Lmbo I have no idea what he was on I don’t think I want to
Listening to upbeats tunes Heather…I bet your a Steps kinda girl….lmao
When I was alone and boring. Then after hearing this song I will become fresh.
I use an Apple Watch with music on it and only one Apple earpod (have never lost it). That way, I both have music and a running watch in one, while still being able to hear cars coming etc..
Best running earphones are Plantronics Backbeat FIT. They are in-ear with large and comfortable ear-hooks that hook over your ears without interfering with glasses etc. They are waterproof so you can wash the sweat off and they don’t form a proper seal in your ear so you can still hear the world around out. I highly recommend them.
I also connect them to my Garmin Forerunner 645 music so I don’t need to carry a phone.
I actually noticed that I like podcasts more than music. I’ll turn music off in my mind but I have to focus on a podcast, which pulls my focus away from the fact that my legs are tired and I feel like I’m going to vomit. My speed probably doesn’t change, but my endurance goes up for sure.
No1 reason to listen to music while running? The existential dread of being unloved doesn’t settle in while your brain’s inactive and you’re hyperventilating doing 185 bpm.
Adele is a beautiful artist in every respect. A Complete awesome woman and artist. Total Respect
Hi, it’s 2020 and running watches with music playback capabilities exist?
Used to hear music while running, but earbuds keep falling off. Ditched music and phone altogether. I now run with only my watch, focusing on my breathing and pace.
I thought this was a black guy. I’m just now finding out who this guy is. Thanks to a subway commercial.
I want to contect with you sir
Very urgent for my admition in army of my country
Powerbeats Pro just like Apple AirPods but with the ear hooks to eliminate any worry they will fall out.
If you listening this in 2020?
Congratulations your had a good taste in music!♥️
When I go for longer jogs I will consider music. When I run hard it messes with my rhythm.

Sir can u please make a video on training schedule for long distance runner please
When I’m doing my longer runs or moderate distance runs I listen to podcasts, but when I’m doing short distance or a speed workout I listen to music.
You know, you could do the opposite w/ Taxi Driver. Add the Rocky theme to De Niro’s training montage:D
I’m gonna see if I can do better but thanks for upload you should’ve said your gonna kill em instead of you get him the guy said your gonna kill him I remember I saw it but good job on the door Ting scene he should’ve been breathing hard at the end of his work out run but still Good job
I absolutely love Dr Karageorghis. He has a wealth of knowledge in a field that I find fascinating. He applies science to the old adage of sports being 90% mental and 10% physical. I hope we hear more from him in the future.
Ran to music until I got hit by a car (not really my fault to be fair). Put me right off.
I find running with music passes the time better. My earbuds recently died on me so I’ve been running with out till I get a new pair. ♂️
I started out running in high school track and cross-country in the early 1990’s and the only way to listen to music while running was a walkman but it wasn’t allowed, anyway. I did, however, listen to music on the bus on the way to races and events and I always picked something to pump me up before a race and to play inside my head during the race.
When I got back into running as an adult, over 10 years later, mp3 players were starting to become popular, but ipods didn’t exist yet. It was easier to run without music. And then when I did get an mp3 player, I could never use earbuds because they always fall out of my ears when they bounce or my ears start to get sweaty. When I started to run regularly indoors at the gym either on a treadmill or the indoor track, that’s when I first started to listen to music while running, but I had to find headphone with straps over my head or ears that wouldn’t fall out. Even then, bouncing cords were always a real pain.
Now, I finally have a pair of bluetooth over-ear headphones that I use while riding my bike trainer in the garage. I’ve run a few races while wearing different styles of bluetooth headphones, but I can’t stand most of them. Instead I prefer to run without them. So when I do all my training, I never use music unless it’s at the gym on the indoor track. And even then I forget to bring my headphones half the time and listen to whatever music the gym is playing. But, the majority of the time I run outside with no music because 1) safety, 2) I prefer to run without music, 3) it’s easier to run without music. And then I’m prepared for my races especially triathlons where listening to music is not allowed.
In March I ran the LA Marathon without headphones. And at no point did I ever wish I had them.
I will also mention aftershokz. You don’t feel them, they might be fully waterproof and I still want to have my phone with me as I am solo runner/rider. The most important is that there’s no impact to your awareness of the surroundings. From time to time though I still like to run with my steps and breathing rhythm only.
they should of did a dbz movie with “Rocky” playing goku. eh yo chichi i did it!
Seriously It’s been 3 years…can’t believe that anti-drop is 3 years old
U can buy I ball glint headphones if you don’t want to carry your phone, this headphone has a sd card slot. They are durable
I never exercise with music because it’s the one time I know my self talk is positive. I like how I think about myself when exercising. Sure, there are times when I feel like shit while training but afterwards I feel good about having done it. Even the wanting to stop dialogue isn’t self-deprecating.

Still one of the best ending of a song my ears have experienced!
Great to hear that you listen to 90’s underground hip hop ‘✌
I love you ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
But, new aspect no
That’s pretty interesting. I usually get a boost from upbeat music when running, but I still prefer to run without music. I’ll have to try listening some beats before a run, see how that works.
If Mo played football, England would have won the world cup!
No out on the streets I want to be mentaly aware of my surrondings. Maybe on the track I could give it a try.
Some interesting points thou which I was’nt aware of. Well done GTN
I’m so proud to say, 9 years later I am still coming back to this song! #legendary

The fuck? Rocky actually went into a slaughterhouse and punched dead carcasses?
I was driving in the bush in Queensland Australia. I was travelling for work. Come home got my children. And the youngest one said mum, “I like this song”. I said to him.”Yeh I like it too. I’d left his father for good.” I got a job out of town. And my baby still like this song.
I listen to music in recovery runs. But I don’t listen to music in my intervals, tempo or long runs
Does anyone know the name of the woman in the clip and kiss Charlie
Lets be honest, we all came here to remember and vibe didnt we?
You can use Your watch to listen to music and always use earphones on that You can here Your surrounding cars bikes and so on foe safety

I always run with headphones, but I think that’s because when I started running I was using the couch to 5k app and needed them. I only ever use them with one ear bud in though. I try to keep the ear closest to the road open.
Hey how much of a break should I take between cross country and Track
You know you could use audacity to remove the music and leave the vocals
This songs so iconic. This will be remembered as one of the great songs of this era. Which makes me happy because I don’t think much mainstream music from the last 20 years will stand the test of time.
