It is possible to safely combine a low-carb diet and exercise, but it will help to understand how your body uses carbs to fuel different types of activity. Here’s everything you need to know about low-carb strength training and cardio.Following a low-carb diet encourages fat-burning, and adding cardio to the equation can really rev the process up.
Do 30 minutes of stationary bicycling, stair-stepping or jogging on the treadmill immediately following your workout 3-5 times per week. While on a low-carb diet, keep your cardio intensity level to 70%-80% of your maximal heart rate.Going low-carb? Great plan if you’re looking to shred body fat and get ripped.
But when you don’t do it right—or you combine it with a poorly planned training program—it can sap your energy and cause big-time losses in muscle and strength. If you’ve tried it already, you know exactly what we mean. For hypertrophy training, rep ranges are between 8 to 12 with a lower weight, greater rest time, and a higher training volume than strength training.
Power Training: a type of training that focuses on training the body in a way that promotes rapid, explosive movements, most often used for sport.Cardio vs strength training. In this video, Wendy Coop explains the difference between cardio vs strength training for exercise. Cardio vs weights. Medical Disclaimer: I am *not* a dietician or.
To help the fat burning process along on a low carb diet, there’s nothing like adding a little cardio to your workout. Cardio should take the form of 30 minutes of stationary bicycling, stair-stepping, or jogging on the treadmill, immediately following the workout, 3-5 times per week. So, for example, if you discovered you love strength training classes, you might want to give yoga a try, since that kind of exercise can add relaxation, mindfulness, and mobility to your routine. All You Need to Know About High Protein, Low Carb Diets Written by Jillian Kubala, MS, RD on July 21, 2020 — Medically reviewed by Kathy W. Warwick, R.D., CDE Basics.
It’s generally accepted that a low carb intake will reduce power output during high-intensity exercise, so carb cycling could help if you’re eating a low-carb diet but want to complete a HIIT or weightlifting workout, for example. (BTW, here’s more info on how to exercise while on the keto diet.).As for exercise, research supports resistance training as the main or central part of a person’s exercise program. In fact, if you strength train correctly and consistently, you really do not need to do any other formal type of exercises like Pilates or aerobics.
And resistance training will make you better at any sport or activity that you.JV: If your main goal is to look good and maintain decent strength levels, training should definitely be focused on resistance exercise to build muscle, and adjust diet (i.e. lower carbs) to burn fat. I don’t see endurance training as that important, unless of course you feel the need to increase your maximal oxygen consumption or you just.If you want to know E-X-A-C-T-L-Y how much you can safely increase your exercise volume week over week, you can calculate something called your acute volume to chronic volume ratio, says Mack. (Note: If you’re new to strength training, you definitely don’t need to get this nitty-gritty.“If you can do 12 reps of an exercise, the weight isn’t heavy enough.” However, recent research also suggests that metabolic fatigue — achieved by working until your muscles can no longer generate force (failure) — also may contribute to hypertrophy.
The type of training, duration, and intensity will ultimately dictate if you need to consume carbohydrates during training. For instance, 10 six-second sprints have been shown to only deplete muscle carbohydrate stores by 25 percent. A traditional bodybuilding split consisting of up to 20 sets only depletes stores by 25-40 percent. 2.Any kind of physical activity will hit the fat content in your body hard.
But that doesn’t mean that you only have to focus on cardio and ignore strength training. You’ll be glad to know that strength training burns more calories than regular cardio as you need more energy to pull off strength exercises. That’s why you burn more fat.

Amazing video!
If someone has already gained the muscle size and is on TRT would keto be a good option for cutting?
Dr Kaplan, is it ok to take vitamin K2/7 while along with vitamin d3 while on brilinta & baby aspirin
Dave, this is fascinating data, and presented immaculately.
Now time to make your efforts explode into the popular culture. Let’s make your movie premier, “Super Size Me…Low Carb. Edition”
Of course that’s a play on words because the ‘subject’, an overweight person, eats drive-through fast-food everyday for a month, BUT…no fries, no bread, no soft drinks, no ice cream. They would eat meat, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions, mustard, mayo, water, black coffee.
The kicker would be that am overweight person can eat a modified fast food meal 3-4 times daily for 30 days and lose weight. No excessive allowed, and bloodwork would be done every 3 days x 10.
So what’s do you think?
Well researched Jerry!
I’ve been on Keto for two yrs now and I agree with most of what you said. There is only one minor difference and that is I only have one day for carbs which is solely for the purpose of keeping my body’s ability to breakdown sugars. I’ve never fatigued or lost muscle but I also haven’t been on any regime to cut up for competition.
Ketone supements knocked me out of ketosis and I quickly became tired/fatigued so stopped taking them.
Have you looked into intermittent fasting as it boosts testosterone massively! I never feel better than when I’m intermittent fasting which I do about 2/3 days a week.
Really enjoyed the vid! Information is very accurate from my own experience!
Grab hold and hang on. Once he gets going, the good doctor just rolls.
In the US it is impossible to get a calcium scan without a costly doctor referral. It is anti-health.
I’m 66 years old and have been on a keto diet for seven weeks. I’ve lost 18 pounds all of it around my middle and chest fat. I’ve been a skinny fat guy most of my life. Thin arms and legs but a bit of a potbelly. I also do a 16 eight intermittent fasting regimen. Even though when I was younger I did join gyms and try to work my muscles to get them larger that never seemed to happen. I joined the gym again started working out with weights. First off my energy levels are through the roof. I actually have to stop myself from doing more in my workouts, so I dont hurt myself. After just three weeks my biceps and triceps feel rocksolid. When I flex my arm I can see and feel biceps muscles getting larger. I do typical keto regiment around 20 carbs or less or from vegetables. The only fruit I have are berries. I thought I was having too much protein than fat so I started doing bulletproof coffee in the morning. After fasting for 16 to 18 hours I have a bullet proof coffee and go to the gym. My blood pressure which was high is now an athletic range. I measure it fasted in the mornings and it’s usually around 116/68. I also learned about Circadium Rhythm and I’m getting good eight hours sleep every night. Are use blue Blocker glasses at around 9 o’clock at night and take 3 mg of melatonin. So if you’re getting older I want to change your life for the better keto is the way to go.
In Quebec, the « standard of care » to determine if one is recommended to go on statins to lower the risk of CVD and stroke is the Framingham score « period. » Even though I provide evidence of a CAC score below 100 (done in US as not available in Quebec) makes no difference as doctors have to abide by the « standard of care » when it comes to help prevent CVD and stroke. Adopting a ketogenic lifestyle may lead to a higher LDL serum level to distribute the triglycerides and ketones used as fuel by the mitochondria. Will be searching for another doctor, I may need to go out of Quebec province.
no human population has been found to be in ketosis, not the Eskimos, not the Maasai, not Olympics athletes. Yet, you want us to believe in ketosis?
Ketoacidosis happens when ketone levels AND blood glucose levels are high, which never happens in Low Carb people. Type 1 Diabetics have to be careful with Keto diets because of their inability to shuttle the glucose out of the blood without meds. For type 2 diabetics keto is rarely problematic
Can I do a fat burning cardio workout while on the keto diet or is that too much exercise??!
what do you think of resistant hiit training? 😉 could it be the best of both worlds…and during your cool down you’re doing a yoga pose?? thats all three in one!:D Great video! your videos have sparked a lot of interest for me in dieting and opened a HUGE door of self discovery through personal trials. Not only does it all make sense..it’s quite easy to grasp! I’m pretty lucky to live in a place where my immediate surroundings potentially contain all the food necessary for me to be on a ketogenic diet. i have to admit though..i am still pretty confused on what to buy and eat. i really don’t understand what should be eaten..i dont eat meat or dairy..so im kind of confused…what about pressed nut fats like pignuts? or coconuts? but should i just be eating oil?? idk…:D more trial..more study..more discovery..more strength and peace!:D
Hello how are u I lift weight and do 15min of cardio too is that good enough I also I’m a RN I work 12hr I work out before I go to work is it too much let me know
I was in the hospital for 3 days from diabetic ketoacidosis. Lost a lot of weight and in the aftermath I became a Keto/low carb guy. I’m also a lifter who uses a Keto preworkout powder
hey,if anyone else wants to uncover basics of atkins diet try Voneyton Uncontrollable Progression (search on google )? Ive heard some amazing things about it and my friend got excellent results with it.
You can eat 20 grams of carbs a day on a ketogenic diet and still be in ketosis if you are doing resistance training you can increase that amount (as long as you burn it! )
No you don’t need any fiber and most the muscle I built was on almost no carbs
Very interesting and simply adds to my belief that tracking, worrying about cholesterol levels is mostly useless.
Im 18 years i do (IF) i eat 3 meals a day betoen each meal 6 huars (IF) no snacks my protien 155g my Carb 98g my Fat 83g i stay with this program but some days i eat frout with meals not snack my wight 71 KG my muscle are good size im lean and my high 180cm is this good? For me to eat like that i wanna stay In my wight
if you develop insulin resistance due to too many carbs you will struggle to build muscle. i wanna be a shredded kunt not the incredible bulk
22:30 “It get’s a little complimated” hahaha Brainum huh?.. Jerry sure does have difficulty getting his words out… Maybe not enough carb 😉
Do refeed at least once a week.Depend on your body and feeling.More muscle mean faster metabolisme. We need carbs:Just control it and know when to refeed.Stay hydrated
Do anybody know about Custokebon Secrets? Does it work? I hear many people burn their weight with this popular fat burn method.
This video should be called everything you need to know about keto
Does the weight loss data mean I might be able to turn into a lean mass hyperresponder if I just lose weight and do endurance exercise? I can do that. It sounds fun.
Your channel is second to none for its genre; always very informative and intelligently composed. Thank you for sharing your valuable knowledge.
The bread experience could be biased as you ad process meat?you should do the experiment with different diet considered as healthy same low fat, vegan, vegan high fat….It would be also interesting to see the test on different people, fir Exemple last study on glucose level showed different people reacted completely different to same food
Great video, I beg to differ check out keto savage, I’ve been low to carb diet, and I train daily for 10 months now with no adverse effects
This is great info. Nice to see someone that truly understands the ketosis process. Thanks Jerry.
So the optimal for fat loss, and leN muscle production is 5 on 2 off?
Hi Ashley, I’ve been doing Keto for a little over 2 months. I have lost 28.6 pounds and 18 inches. I just started working out at the gym. I do 30 minutes of walking on the treadmill (target HR of 110) and one day I do upper body strength, the next is legs with a day off after that. I see a 2 pound gain on the scale. Is this normal will it come back off? What else should I do? Thank you!
Very first video I’ve seen where I didn’t get lost, bogged down thus eventually bored with indecipherable medical and science nomenclature. Great job! I learn a lot and enjoyed learning from you sir.
Did I miss something? Did he tell what he had people eat? He said low carb but was it high fat, animal v. vegetable fat?
ketogenic diet only means that more ketones are produced and has nothing to do with a precise indication of grams for carbohydrates…point
And yet, no top bodybuilder won the Olympia by using a keto diet.
Could you please please, talk about natural ways to reduce Estrogen
So did I understand correctly that carnivore diet is not good because it raises triglycerides?
i love the moron top comment is some weeb idiot who only cares about the shortcut notes, its hard to please people, you see a person whos some roided up idiot talking about their product people get mad calling them sellouts, you get SCIENCE in a video and people want to just skip to the important parts…….these people usually fail really quickly in fitness because they give up because they only care about the phase not the love of fitness
19:35…….. cafestol! raises your cholesterol, idk idr what i read, maybe this happens because cafestol mimicks cholesterol?
i remember reading that a paper filter takes most of it out, so “camp coffee” and french press leave the cafestol in the coffee, while using a coffee filter does not…. looks like that’s not the case here, cafestol is in there either way.. ok back to the video
time to play with those molecules aka “Legos”
Is it ok if I workout 6times a week adjusting into keto? 3 days of straight training 3 days cardio incline for 30 mnts
I feel great but this is what happened to me on KETO
2/2019 BEFORE
Total Cholesterol 184
HDL 88
LDL 86
Triglycerides 48
Then labs tested again 5 months later AFTER 6/2019
Total Cholesterol 220
HDL 90
LDL 120
Tri 49. Thoughts?
regarding that effect keto supplements produce in the body (preventing from using own fat for energy), is it correct to assume, that being on low fat low carb diet as long as you have some body fat left will be better for weight loss?
Wonder what happens with particle counts when the basic numbers change drastically over a very short time? Seems that would be very interesting to know. Great video!
Without insulin, how can your body absorb all the nutrients you eat?

P. S. I would eat meat and beef liver as substitute for eggs.
i love keto:-)
it protects you from muscle loss, even if you are not eating every 5 hours.
This was literally the most relatable/understandable/informative video. This is what I have been searching for. Thank you so much!!
Ketogenic diet does not lack fiber! a keto plate consists mostly of vegetables! Other than this Jerry is very accurate about everything he says.
Soooooo carb up for bulking, and weekend carb cycling for cutting.
You have a lot of facts wrong, you need lots of veggies to clean the fats and proteins from the liver to prevent a fatty liver and it is not a diet for a few weeks or months, it is a lifestyle
I wish someone would breakdown this video in laymen terms lmao
Does anyone know about working out while fasting? Like is it terrible for you?
Dave.
To get a low LDL reading what is best?
1. A fasted state 12 hours?
2. Eat large amount of fat 3 days prior to blood test?
Globalism….and you think it’s a good thing…..let’s import that dreamy 3 world into the United States of America……right
Globalism and liberalism is cancer.
Thanks for clearing up the ‘Experts’ version of the Keto diet. Respect
Banting diet = about 5% carb, high protein and high fat, body will sustain itself through gluconeogenesis. A true keto diet is about 5% carb, 15% protein and 80plus % fat. The former is what most people think is actually a keto diet, the latter is the diet that was developed for epileptic in the early twenties. A true keto diet is heavily unsustainable and will fuck you up like the dietician tell you it will. I just don’t see the point in going through all that shit when you can find plenty of dudes online that are 5-10% all year round that eat plenty of carbs
Dave Palumbo says that if you ingest any carbs you can’t achieve ketosis. My understanding is that a keto diet has zero carbs. Who do you chose to believe. I guess that’s why I’m about over with You Tubers giving advice.
Science is politics! Same reason March and sciences split in the 13th centuryfurthermore as human beings we all strive to know it all yet we are definitely all different in our chemistry and our with our bodies are different and for that reason this guy is bullshit.
I said it…
@Lionpackfitness_official
It’s malpractice for so many doctors and cardiologists to be putting patients on cholesterol drugs with everything we’ve known about this for at least a decade.
I’m glad there are diligent data nerds out there like Feldman! Citizen scientist!
If drinking coffee puts you in a state of ketosis why is it then that everyone who drinks it all day long is usually fat?
Thankfully this is starting to be taught at medical school by Dr Kaplan at least, hopefully more will follow suit
The great lee haney said it best Low carb diets are for fat boys stay in shape
Not sure if helps anyone, but I had for years TG around 2, above recommended on carbs. They did not go up on keto, but they did not go lower either. BUT… what I found and checked several times with lab, it looks my TG goes under 100 only when taking CARNITINE. It looks only that influences them. Note however I do not eat meat that have a lot of carnitine, I eat mainly cheese & eggs on keto. Maybe if I would eat meat would have good TG and no need for additional carnitine.
As for HDL, it was for years around 1, going on keto did not look like to improve, however there was tremendous improvement with adding Omega 3 (i also do not eat fish) from fish oil to around 1.50, when I add MCT oil I have constantly HDL between 165 and 180.
In your opinion what would optimal lipid panel numbers look like? TotalC, HDLC,TRI, LDLC?
Love it great job Stephanie great video you have helped me. And I recruited my Wife slowly but she’s coming along because of her response from her Doctor. Your the bomb.com Thanks
When you experienced severe muscle loss on the low carb diet when you had such low body fat, were you eating nothing but protein and no fat in your diet either? I mean, were you on a low carb, low fat, high protein diet, or were you on a low carb high fat diet?
Obviously if you are consuming no carbs and no fat, your body is going to have to somehow produce ATP. If you have no dietary fats or carbs and no body fat to speak of, you’re going to experience some ill effects. If that’s what you were trying to do, you’re lucky you didn’t die.
As an especially carb insensitive individual which types of carbohydrates can guarantee I will grow in the right places? Complex ones only?
I found honey helped me after 10/12 months of fatigue on Carnivore. 50 years old. Previous alcoholic for four years.
I wonder what his take on @anerobixx’s pure protein diet which is zero carb and a 80% protein to 20% fat ratio for extreme fat burning and muscle retention
14:29 OMFG STOP calling it “Brain fog” im so sick of hearing that, call it what it is. You feel “Lightheaded” cause of low blood sugar and your temples feel so tight you feel like your head’s gonna explode. Tha’ts what low blood sugar feels like, don’t call it brain fog it’s sounds stupid
So yes or no because you said It ate your muscle but them explained how if you do it differently that it raise hgh and testosterone to help you gain muscle
I eat a shit ton of carbs after atkins diet, and keto.I was 260 and got down to 190. Im still losing weight still and getting muscle mass from my carb intake.. At the end of the day it does not matter its calories in calories out. Im getting leaner and leaner every day. I eat close to 200 grams of carbs daily. I go to the gym and hit hard everyday and lift heavy i also put in high volumes of compound work outs and power lifting. I perform so much better on carbs, I lift heavier on carbs, I get more sore and tear muscle to rebuild on carbs. My caloric intake is 2500 a day plus I add cardio. My abs are starting to show I finally have veins bulging all over my arms chest and stomach from the leaness. I recommend keto and atkins to get down to weight you want to be you can get down and lose fat on carbs too, you just have to work out and utilize the carbs to perform for great gains. With atkins or carnivore diets you can sit down and really watch movies and lose weight.
coffee sensitivity, due to lectins, everyone has problems with lectins in one form or another.
no comparison controls. n of 1. not controlling various relevant variables. no comparison to actually recommended diets eg MIND, dash, Mediterranean etc. This is not science but data masturbation
So those 2-3 minutes, you don’t walk, you stand there and breathe calmly?
Awesome vid, as usual:)<3
guarantee you Jerry and h is training partner were eating fish and water because that was what was done in the 70s to get ripped that’s why his body went to shit
This video is brilliant, the information provided is outstanding, respect Jerry keep em coming.
Or is it drinking coffee takes out triglycerides from fat cells out to blood stream for energy use during IF?
Keto is shit for bodybuilders there is no glycogen in the muscles.
Lol on keto you can eat lots of leafy greans, so fiber is not really an argument
As just some random guy I can tell you that losing this last 15 lbs to get to “normal” and restricting my food.. namely carbs caus it seems to make me drop the excess fast…. My strength is down a lot. My pullups are suffering. This is strength not hypertrophy. I will need to eat more carbs soon.
We go through the 2-3 week period when the body adapts everytime we start the keto diet or just the first time and( then the process is much faster)?
Muscle is fueled by carbs not protein or fat a scientific fact. High protein is hard on the kidney’s and you can only assimilate so much protein at one sitting.
He’s talking about Atkins (said zero carbs and Atkins is more protein than fat), KETO (once you are fat adapted) you can get 50 100 (or more ) carbs (not sugar or starchy carbs UNLESS, you are fat adapted and only after your workout to get your protein in faster). Just to start Keto (not Atkins) you are LOWER carbs (20 50), this guys only thinks he knows what he’s talking about folks, why he experienced muscle losses is because the super high protein and no carbs from plenty of veggies, which the liver converts to glucose through gluconeogenesis, but with enough carbs from veggies (fiber) and higher fat than protein (slows down absorption of protein, which slows down or halts gluconeogenesis). Oh, and you do replace electrolytes with Pink Himalayan salt and super foods like Avocado’s and Kale. Remember, BACON is a super food on keto: ) Do not eat fake ketones from supplements is right.
Lack of Fiber?? You are not talking about Keto, you are talking about ATKINS. Keto embraces ass loads of vegetables, what is in vegetables?? You guessed it, loads of fiber, potassium, magnesium, too many trace vitamins and minerals to list, and you add your Pink Himalayan salt. Once you are fat adapted, you CAN get away with eating some starchy carbs after your workout so you can get your protein in. Sure, you will be out of keto for 1 hour but since you got fat adapted for a month, your body knows fat is fuel, so your insulin returns to normal, and you continue being a fat burning machine.
Remember, false information by just pretending Keto is Atkins and then saying stating facts from both and still calling it all Keto is misinformation. It’s like saying a watermelon is good for you because it’s a fruit, so the avocado is not needed.
I really love running. I’ve been on a low carb diet for a while now but running has become so hard for me. My head hurts and it feels like I have NO energy at all. Weight trainings been a bot easier but I still have to eat an apple or a banana before I hit the gym. Do you have any recommendations? Or is it just me?
you can do Keto full time year ’round. You need to counter balance with more dietary fat. As you lose body fat you need to increase fat in the diet to offset the energy loss from not having enough body fat. I’ve been doing Keto year ’round and lifting…getting bigger and more ripped at the same time.
I forgot to add the link to the workout program I use in description, here it is! http://amzn.to/2sdHThk with this workout for me 5, 8, 10, 12 and 15 lb weights are perfect, but for a beginner you can start with the first 3 weights. you will also need a bench or a stability ball.
Ashley I’m completely new to all of this. Keto eating and working out. On day four of exercise. I hate it! lol please keep making videos bc I’m so unmotivated lol ❤️
How do I know how much cardio do I need to do if I am on a Keto diet?
Hello. I do 30 minutes Treadmill on 3.3 speed. Then I do 15 minutes cycling on 3.5-4.0 speed. Then I do stomach exercises such as elbow Plank (4 rounds 30 Sec), 30 crunches, and more. Then I do weights where I do Stomach exercises. I do this everyday. Is it okay to do these exercises since I am on Keto diet?
This may be weird I really want your phone number so you can help me out
My HBA1C decreased from 10.2 to 7.5 in one month with keto and intermittent fasting. However my triglycerides increased from 92 to 240.
I need to get as much weight off as I can pre surgery so chose keto. BMI and weight is important. Should I do cardio or weights if I have 1 week to try to get 10+lbs off? If cardio, how long? Won’t muscle weigh more? And I MUST weigh less by scale.
Thank you so much Ashley I would do cardio 6 days a week with no weights, for all the exercise I did I feel like I didn’t lose as much weight because I would then end up really hunger and over eat I will definitely try this thank you!!!!
Cathe Frederich is awesome. $19.99 monthly streaming. I haven’t found anyone better.
I’m on Keto and it seems like every time I work out I gain 1-3 pounds the next day. Any tips?
I’ve been on keto for a week and whenever I try to workout I feel weak and lightheaded do you have any tips for me?
This is nice movie I think. However, You should take workouts from Unflexal if you want to learn more about workouts.
Anyone tested out the Custokebon Secrets (just search it on google)? We’ve noticed several awesome things about this popular weight loss system.
Was there a big difference between working out and not working out? Did u lose weight faster?
I supplement preboitic fiber while I’m on keto. It works great.
you get some guys who look more obese than bulky, like yo have to poke through 5 inches of fat before you can feel their muscles
Just limit your milk intake, increase cheese intake, and if you go ketogenic just go overboard on the green veggies for extra carbs. You’ll be a classic Arnold beast.
Does everyone forget that bodybuilders used to eat ketogenic just based on principal? You’d NEVER see a classic bb eating three bowls of oats before they shoot up their insulin.
Steak, broccoli, and another round of both. That’s what will give you quality muscle without the bloated pregnancy stomach.
I ride a mountain bike have done for 5 years they tend to be long cardio type rides but have large sections of high intensity “steep rough climbs” or full power acceleration along flatter trails, i started the keto diet last month but now i cant seem to sustain the high intensity parts of my riding as well as i did prior to the keto diet, is this something i have to fuel differently for, targeted carbs for example?
Not to exercise is just joke cardio actually helps with stress Americans and their diet stop eating like pigs
This video should be compulsory viewing for Cardiologist and people responsible for health policy.
I have muscle stiffness in arms..how to do strength training
What was the pre and post workout meal during the week if you were not eating carbs?
The exercises you are recommending are anaerobic, i.e. glycolytic glycogen/glucose burning if done to any appreciable degree of intensity. You are recommending strength training without mentioning that this kind of training is compromised by a ketogenic diet because it relies on glycogen/blood sugar. If you mean low weight/high rep or low rep/high weight exercise then that’s doable; if you mean cardio-type circuits that’s doable. You said cardio is OK but not too much; cardio is the only exercise that doesn’t rely on glycogen, except less than 10 seconds of weights (1-2 reps) which rely mostly on the phosphocreatine pathway. I repeat; you are recommending strength training without mentioning that this kind of training is compromised by a ketogenic diet because it relies on glycogen/blood sugar. It’s the elephant in the room.
Great presentation as always, Dave! Thank you for all you do to help the rest of us. You do make a difference and you are valued!
What about post workout meals/protein shake? Do u recommend on keto? What best approach? Thinking of going keto and I work out 6 days a week always do post protein drink?
100 years ago all medical research was done this way. Then big medical and government involved and it was a good thing for a little while. Now that line of research is corrupted for a high percentage of projects. This is a disservice. Your renaissance crown research is refreshing and needed.
I’ve been doing keto since Feb of this year, recently I added Strength training twice a week. Is twice a week enough? I’m 5’0” and 109lbs, but with the strength training I’ve started to feel bulky. So I’ve been trying to walk more to reduce the bulk. I’ll try some HIIT vids to see if that’ll help! Thanks for the info:)
Would you recommend High Intensity Interval training on Keto?
I teach Zumba 1-2 times a week and do TABATA once a week…when you talk about cardio being too much, do you mean if you do it every day? I get really bored with weight training so if I don’t do Zumba, my exercise is minimal. Isn’t it better to do cardo than nothing at all?
I’m brand new to Keto and what is a good pre and post workout meals?
So with the white bread experiment, you eat white bread and process lean meats and the bad LDL cholesterol drops. This is supposed to be a good thing so I don’t understand your point?
Hii can you do a complete workout video during keto…plz rply
i was on chicken and broccoli/cabbage, eggs, beef, only eating at 12 and 4pm, only drinking water and black coffee, was in the gym every morning, a couple of miles on the treadmill after the weights, heavy lifting not fairy weights, i lost 5 stone in 5 month, my cholesterol was normal blood pressure normal, i had diabetes type 2 blood sugar was 130, after 5 months it was 39 so if u want to shift weight and feel 1000x better and you have the willpower to stop eating crap then thats the way to go:)
Old skool is low carbs or keto. New skool is high carb or moderate. Either one it still the same. Calories in, calories out.
take aways from the video
1. zero carbs through weekdays and cheat meals i.e carbs on weekends to replace glycogen and insulin levels
2. ketones are catabolic and alternate source of fuel. other than glucose.
3. 3-4 weeks is the maximum you should be on ketogenic diet. going more than that would cause muscle loss.
4. very high protein diet during ketosis is not a good idea as you may not enter the ketogenic state because of it.
5. Caffeine intake can increase ketone production.
Nice movie. However you can learn about workouts more. Just google for Unflexal instructions.
This grandma does bodyweight, band resistance, yoga, mat pilates, tai chi, and bellydancing, in my livingroom. Low impact, free and easier to work into my daily schedule, and not dependent upon the weather…removes all excuses and lots of variety.
Glycogen replenished in muscles can be as little as 4 grams of sugar or 1 teaspoon, this is why diabetics usually have hard candy around for an ’emergency’.
I just placed an order of the 10 day experience on Ashley’s website (through PayPal). Does anyone know how long it will take to receive my order? All help is greatly appreciated!
Would you like to share in a video about your T25 experience? I been scrolling down your videos but can’t find it. I just ordered that video. Thank you so much for your generous heart. Love to see more fitness videos. Love
Are you still doing shakeology shakes in the AM as your breakfast?
Great Video! Where is the workout Programm at the description?
Yea, you say the right things, but if you are only working out with 15 pound weights, you don’t get it yet.
I have been asking so many people this question!!! Great video! I like doing weights and Keto keeps me satisfied. I work out 6 days a week now. Working towards a fitness goal. My coach wants me to carb cycle. I want to stay with Keto.
I haven’t seen a picture of any thing he drank. Drinks can make a big difference. I would like to see a test from Bergamonte® citrus extract
Keto diet is dangerous for a lot of people. Don’t fall for internet, self-made medical experts.
Citizen scientists and an n of 1 experiment. Wow! Talk about fooling people with misinformation. Some youtube, self-made experts declare that low carb is bad……and their fans cheer loudly. Some other youtube self-made experts declare that keto diet is bad….and their fans cheer loudly. Some other youtube self-made experts declare that keto diet is good….and their fans cheer loudly. It is so freaking weird that these gullibles listen non-scientists and non-medical experts.
Carb rotation works great for me. If you suffer from hypothyroidism a ketogenic diet isn’t for you; you need at least 30 gr of carbs/day to produce the proper hormones. Coffee, coconut oil before training and BCAA’s during training sessions make me going into ketosis even eating carbs, I know this because of the way my sweat smells when training. And as Jerry said; don’t prolong the ketosis for a to long period of time; if’ve experienced myself that when cutting too much on the carbs my muscles start to look ‘flat and empty’. I’m also a natural lifter.
Dave is the truth, man. I really appreciate what he’s doing!
The prime message here is that time restricted eating is the critical intervention….And fasting 12 hrs is minimal…Most ‘intermittent fasters’ are doing 16 hrs minimum..every day. In short, yes, eat ‘well’, cut out sugar, lower your carbs….but it is the *timing*, i.e. maximizing the fasting interval, that is the most significant factor in improving one’s health profile.
I wish l was clever enough to understand this man. I just know he giving us good stuff! But the average guy. No xx keep going though
Lmao my wife’s docile horse turned into a bucking angry guy after the neighboring horse kept eating his HFLC special food, leaving him the cruddy high carb diet that the neighboring horse was supposed to eat. As soon as she switched him back he’s the sweetest guy.
Not unterstand he say ldl raise when you lose weight on keto but same time his graph show that ldl go down when fat go up??
Re: Coffee..we’ve known for a long time that coffee releases triglycerides into the blood…I read that in a Muscle & Fitness magazine in the 1980’s. It’s why we lose our appetite when drinking it. That and it increases adrenaline which also releases glucose into the blood. You’re in fight or flight…. what I didn’t realize is just how much. That’s crazy. But it does indeed explain why I lose my appetite with a cup of coffee…
And I too have the low tri, high HDL, high LDL “problem,” and am a weight lifter. I just read, though, that high LDL is protective in older people…I also have longevity genes. I think there’s a connection. LDL captures bacteria and viruses..it plays a role in immune function. Were you aware of that?
My doctor has stopped caring about my high LDL because my CVD risk is something like 1.2% because of the ratios. But having been raised in the era of LDL is the devil, I am OBSESSED with getting it down, or being completely sure I’m in no danger of CVD. So I am endlessly researching. But honestly, I think I might be wasting my time. I don’t have metabolic syndrome and just gave up sugar for good. So I think I’m ok. But these damn vegans are scaring the crap out of me. However, get this, I have been vegan…and both times by week 3-4 I start losing valuable memory. I kid you not. I get stupid…I forget the day and date, start getting clumsy and drop things… I think it’s B vitamin deficiencies because I fix it with animal foods. Not everyone can be vegan. People need to know this.
When I started Keto I kept it under 5 grams. Lost weight and lots of toxins! I lost weight too fast in hindsight. Felt very sick during the process. I wasn’t lipodemic though. I coach some who are. Fasting and walking has worked for them. I must say there’s some psychology needed with for them. That’s what I do along with Keto.
How can I increase my GFR? It is @59. My legs especially the right one have been swollen for 3 months. I have been on keto for a year, lost 46/50 lbs. Overall I’m feeling well. Sometimes my BP ELEVATED TO 130:90. I’m 63 years of age.
So… for best results, would you recommend doing cardio and strength training alternatively (one day cardio, next day strength training), for no more than 30 minutes each? I just started on the keto diet so I want to know the best way I can accelerate the fat burning process. Thank you!
Good stuff to know but can be sooo confusing when it comes to the area of Cholesterol & to read the side effects from Satins. To much!
LDL cholesterol: How low can you (safely) go? Harvard Health Blog Harvard Health Publishing

So how many hours should you fast before doing a blood test?
Moved to Florida, started keto, lost 40 lbs including beer belly in 3 months and got pretty ripped at 56 years old. Vlogged the whole thing beginning to end.
I had a high coronary calcium score, but only mildly elevated total cholesterol, Moderately elevated LDL level, lower HDL levels and a1c lower than 6.0% for years, but had a smaller, almost total blockage in my LAD where the calcium score was 1309. Total was 1931 though. Always battling inflammation I assume. Am prediabetic.
Doesnt haveing carbs on the weekend kick you out of ketoisis
Amazing info! Very interesting! I have lost 125 pounds and turned my health all the way around. I was dying at just 37, now at 40 I feel better than when I was 16! Its a real lifesaver!
My question would be did you eat enough calories when you started losing muscle? Losing muscle just because you stopped eating carbs completely just doesn’t make sence. Even if you ate a lot’s of protein which actualy goes against ketogenic diet to be honest because you need to keep protein modarate to stay in ketosis…..as long as you didn’t have enough calories and as you said you didn’t have anough fat storage it would be natural for your body to start eating muscle. But if you would be eating enough calories there is simply no reason why your body would start losing muscle. In fact the opposit would be true because ketones are proven to have positive effect on preventing muscle wasting.
So i think the lesson is eat enough calories if you want to keep/build muscle no matter what dietary lifestyle you are folowing.
Dr. JB, you sliced, diced and delivered in this amazing oratory. I’m 60-years young and totally got-off on your exquisite science-based shout-out. And most strikingly, you rattled off nearly all this science without the use of a teleprompter. Which further indicates you’re either a superman or the keto-brain science is solid (hahahaha)l Thank you. Can you help address a question? What are your thoughts on IF or 24-42 hour fasting while doing keto diets (for bodybuilding or bodyweight/gymnastic style training)?
Wow. HDL 0.8 TG 4.9 Hba1C 7.1 CRP 11.5!! that guy on a death march. 6 months brilliant result! I’ve done a Ketogenic diet for 12 months… my hsCRP almost Nil. Trigs 0.8 etc etc
Dr Drew, taking a statin since age 30, needs to see this stuff… sickening…
Wrong logic on the “too restrictive” answer-Get ALL data on ALL types, then compare.
I just had the results from a blood test that I found to be strange, but first let me say that I have a less then 50 % blockage in my carotid arteries and my mother died of coronary artery disease. I should mention that on Sept.16/19 I stopped my 10mg. of Lipitor and the blood work was done on Nov.12./19 after more than a 12 hour fast.. Here’s the blood work ( done in Canada) Total Cholesterol: 4.63 to 7.18. TG: 2.17 to 1.57. HDL: 1.46 to 1.83. LDL: 2.18 to 4.61. Non-HDL Cholesterol: 3.17 to 5.32 and lastly remnant cholesterol:99 to.71. During this time period I was doing intermittent fasting 18/6 and brought my insulin resistance down to normal and I no longer have metabolic resistance. ( I am a 73 yr old female) Can anyone explain these results? How does one’s triglycerides go down and HDL go up AFTER stopping Lipitor?
Coffe is not technically supposed to be included on a carnivore diet, as far as i know caffeine is a poison designed to kill plant predators ( as other chemicals in coffe beans)
Okinawa Japan has the longest lifespan on earth. The vast majority of people have low HDL, as low as in the twenties!
This should be shown to everyone and have 350 million views -_-
Maaan, you guys are doing a great job and phenomenal videos!!! Keep up the good work!!
This is one of the most useful, interesting talks I’ve seen in a long time. I really love the “intelligent layman experiments” that lead to internet crowd-sourcing nutrition theories and sometimes, to funded research as a result. And he even talks about Lipedema which almost nobody ever mentions, despite allegedly 10-11% of women in the western world suffer from it, and it’s FAT! Fat you do not lose through ordinary diet and exercise. A condition with no known cure (Mayo clinic named it circa 1940) and that is not even taught in medical school. There’s just so much good in this video! I watched it at 1.5 speed which made it seem even more concise.
Amazing work. This is just a hypothesis, but something else that might also be contributing to the progressively lower LDL-C observed during the white bread experiment, is that the endothelium cells (and other tissues’ cells) are sustaining progressive membrane damage (via lipid peroxidation due to higher oxidative stress). Thus, the LDLs in blood are being used up by the endothelial / other tissues’ cells to supply phospholipids & cholesterol for repair. Similar to the effect of resistance training, but this time in an uncontrolled manner that leads to metabolic dysfunction.
Watching excellent videos like this confirms what has been happening to me.
Recently, I lost over 30 lbs using keto and intermittent fasting, and finally I am on the BMI chart as ‘normal’. My fasting Glucose 91, A1c 5.5, HDL 66, Triglycerides 75, LDL 194, Total 275…
Instead of focusing on the good stuff, my (very overweight) pcp doctor immediately started to zero in on that high number and suggest statins. I walked out, and am now looking for a new pcp who is not overweight and knows the science. You must become your own doctor as the last several I have visited have all been obese.
Thanks so very much for all the hard work you and your crew do. Data is data whether is medical or any other form. When I told my PCP that I was a retired Electrical Engineer, he actually started asking me for data sources that I was quoting while explaining to him why I was hesitant to go on a statin drug. Four years ago when I started with my Doc, he said to me that at 68, you know your body way better than I do, we’ll work together. Keep up the great work!!
Pretty remarkable how quickly the body moves all these variables around so quickly..
–
Now after a little thought on my statement above, these variables should change quickly, in some form… Meaning, you fill your car up with gas, then drive off… Immediately, your tank starts changing in volume.
Now apply that ‘car tank’ idea to your body. Starting in the morning, you fill your blood up with some fuel and your body must & will immediately react to the fuel you just input. Let the body run its’ entire course with this fuel, either burning it or storing it before loading your blood up with fuel again, as with the 12 hrs of no food intake as in this video, and you get a cycle of some sort.
I have eaten CARBS my entire life, heavily, totally excluding fat as much as possible, and never gained weight so at least for me, gaining weight as Dave does, is absolutely not possible. So, I have to conclude our bodies are the same but react differently around the globe. Filipinos eat rice 3 times a day for life and it is hard to find a fat person here… There are people who probably eat rice 75% of their diet is rice.
No doubt in my mind that burning fat as a fuel is healthier than burning CARBS as I have did for 58 yrs so I’m gonna do some testing with some of my variables and hope all is as well as it seems.. Certainly hope I do not have to go to extreme measures of any sort with my eating as so many people must do to keep weight off..
Seems to me that the trigs and LDL shown in the graphs (at about 28:00) are related to diet, while weight is merely a marker of where a particular diet has taken you.
It would be very helpful if you could summarize your results from your experiments in some fashion and explain what you think is important. These data could be useful but it is hard to follow and draw any real conclusions since there are so many things going on.
Bodybuilders have amazing genetics and can eat carbs if they want. Their bodies don’t store fat which is what allows them to be a body builder in the first place
Great video well explained easy to understand great info without all the complicated science I am converted new watcher thank you
Im intensely interested in this mans message but I find this lecture hard to understand because I’m just a layman. Can anyone link him speaking to a a different crowd and using simpler terms?
when are you f..king gringos going to stop the me me me talking, “I’m a software engineer converted into biohacker”, wowwwww my god, you must be an Einstein, I don’t even have words to describe this, I’m in tears
I did keto for a month and I lost 16 lbs but my muscles went flat, absolutely exhausted in the morning, went very pale and work outs suffered tremendously.
I’m currently back to eating small carb ratio for breakfast and moderate carb before/after workout. Every other meal is protein/fat only.
I also limit carbs to only breakfast on non-workout days. I’ve completely filled out and glycogen stores are getting just enough to fuel and I’m currently back to losing 1lb a week.
For those who haven’t don’t keto. I recommend you atleast try it for a month. I learned a ton about my body during that month. Particularly, how little carbs we really need (unless bulking).
The best video on this topic that I’ve seen on YouTube. Great Job.
Thanks for your tips. I am going to start using my small weights at home to get more movement in my life.

Hi Dave, love your presentations.. with regard to hyperresponders listen to Ken Sikaris, Melbourne pathologist.. you may already be familiar
This guy presenting this video is brilliant and his knowledge is deep based on years of experience and following his passion. From now on, I nickname him “The Truth”.
Hi Dave!
About fasting 8, 9 10, 11, 12 hours and testing blood…TG down but, What about results in HDL and LDL? No variations?
Thanks!
The Weizmann Institute of Science (via gut biome, genetics, etc ) is showing how each person reacts differently to foods…..for some a croissant with butter and jam spikes blood sugar and for others it does nothing….I wonder if you would consider this test and as part of your preamble describe how certain foods are friendly to you or not. It seems more and more that one persons experience with diet and health is different from others.
If do strength training, wouldn’t the scale show me gaining weight as muscle weighs more than fat?
I walk for an hour each day just starting the keto diet 3 weeks ago, but I have only lost 7 pounds?? Any advice
Dr Berg’s recommendation for keto stresses fibre…from veggies (kale, spinnach etc)
So it’s time to cut coffee. This is going to be hard. I’ve never had a chemical addiction to anything except coffee.
I tried keto 3 different times, my stomach tells me “nope not today” each time I get diherra at least 5 times in one day and never had i ever had to take 2 Imodium in at one sitting, hell i’ve never had to more then 1 in an entire day, not matter how sick i’ve been, then when u eat carbs your supposed to eat fiber, which makes it worse, then top it off with an atkins bars which is full of sugar alcohols (laxatives) im spewing uncontrollable fire diherra everywhere, no wonder it makes people loose weight
Interesting, in Sweden we use the word “banta” when talking about dieting.
What do you think about P90X and P90X3? Please advise. Thanks.
you are not a weirdo! You are amazing! You are changing people’s lives!
LOl be careful with your knew moving around like that! Was waiting for you to go agghhhhh my knee.
As usual, I learn more from Dave, than any doctor. Thank You DR Feldman…. DR diet researcher!
my keto attempt back in march/april was a disaster. in may i tried to go back at it but botching it every weekend with carb overloads. on jun 6th i decided to try one more time but give 100% dedication to it. happy to say i made it through my daughters birthday parties and the weekend..yay. one thing i was wondering is getting back to workouts.i have a ton of beach body workouts so i def have no excuses at to not working out. so, my question….some say i should wait till week 3 before i start back…thoughts?
Some of those meal pics looked pretty scary, a few looked like a furry lump with a tail,
This sorta matches what my numbers were when I was on a high carb diet. Low total cholesterol, Normal LDL, Low HDL, and high triglycerides. I have not had numbers taken lately but I expect I will have lower triglycerides, and higher HDL since I have been on Keto.
Thank You..you. Helped me out a lot..I used to go to the gym, but stopped because I didn’t want to end up on worlds funniest gym videos…LOL. The gym was very intimidating to me. So I do have my own stuff at home. Thank you again for the info .
Fantastic talk and data sharing, Dave! I’m one of those who entered my lipid profile data on your website based on an elevated LDL following a relatively low-carb pescatarian (not strict keto, but I eat limited quantities of high-quality carbs like berries, sweet potatoes and beans), and on probably 95% of days, I fast a minimum of 12 hours, with it usually being 14-16. My Dr. was bothered by my elevated LDL; never mind that my TG was something like 24, my VLDL was 8 and my HDL was good. She suggested possibly using a statin in the future hell no!!
Also, never mind that the labs I requested to look at inflammation were low (well, homocysteine was on the higher end of normal; I may have a B12 deficiency…), but my cardiac-specific C-reactive protein was 0.24, I think, which is incredibly low.
When I ran all my numbers through the AIP formula on your site, it gave me a negative number. For reference, I’m 53, 5’6″, and weigh around 120. My % body fat is a bit less than 20%. I lift weights and regularly do fasted cardio now (which I found to be by far the best way to do even long runs; I have yet to ever “bonk”).
So yeah, it isn’t going to be CVD that takes me out ;).
I don’t have the financial or logistical means to run labs regularly, but I’d love to know how my labs change before and after the 9-mile fasted runs I’ve done. I figure between the fasting, lower carb and sustained aerobic exercise, I’ve likely depleted my liver and muscle glycogen, and am running on ketones. What is my BG and LDL like under these conditions? Very curious!
Cheers,
Sonya
Very lean guy, mid 20s.
I’ve suffered from a Patulous Eustachian tube much of my life, exasperated by stimulants, the weather and multiple t-tube surgeries, and am thus a Non-coffee drinker.
I’ve done the dirty bulking, my goal to weigh 200 lbs and came close at 192, this was before understanding carbs vs fat, hence dirty bulk.(Force feeding)
After watching this, I plan to injest small dose or decaf Coffee as a way to boost my metabolism, balanced with a high enough fat intake to prevent “drying out”
I expect massive strength gains, and a body weight increase, despite the stimulant on my metabolism.
Regarding Dave’s comments at the end, it seems like he’s in a unique position to not only encourage more N of 1 experiments but maybe even coordinate them? It seems like crowd-sourced science could be exponentially more effect if all of the N of 1’s were performing many of the same experiments, following the same controls, then pooling their results together. Then we would have the best of both worlds, the power of N of 1 for each individual and the power of N of many to have a stronger, more established message.
I started a 90% carnivore diet, after doing a strict keto diet for 6 months… on a blood test done in early July my triglycerides were 233 mg/dL, HDL 69 and LDL 202; a little concerned about the triglycerides, so I started looking on the internet and found Dave Feldman’s self experiment. With that in mind I repeated the blood test a week later now making sure to be in a 12 hour fast window and my TG were 156, HDL 87 and LDL 276… not being totally sure about it, a month later I did the blood test again, now on a 18 hour fast window and my TG were 51, HDL 83 and LDL 337… having said that, I totally support Feldman’s hypothesis.
No… that’s the short answer to the title. Of course that’s just my opinion.
Quitting caffeine changed my life!! I’m 7 months no caffeine, no teas and I’m a new person.. I have that child like happiness back, I’m sleeping so good, erections coming back like concrete.
I love his research and what he is doing, but he could improve his way of sharing information. Many times in this video I was not sure what I’m looking at or what he is talking about.
He didn’t try organic coffee in his hack. That’s all I drink. There’s glyphosate, flavorings, and other sh*t in regular coffee.
Can you do a test with fruit instead of white bread and see the effect on triglycerides reading.
Jerry probably lost muscle mass on Keto cos his fat intake wasn’t high enough, and he wasn’t in true Ketosis, ketones protect against muscle loss, the Keto flu symptoms he had could have been avoided if he had of increased his salt and water intake, when on Keto, insulin drops which enables the kidneys to be more efficient at shedding excess water and salt. No Keto test kit is accurate see the reviews, sticks are the worst, also the fibre comment isn’t true, see The Fibre Myth
Please show me how to make this sandwich…im hungry!!! if there is anything I might struggle with on this diet. it would be making breakfast:0(
I would encourage everybody to learn just a bit of organic chemistry (unless you already did, then maybe you can help teach the rest of us!). it pays to understand the names of the functional groups imo. for example, whats an ester, whats a ketone, etc. Professor Dave Explains, Tyler Dewitt, i would recommend those channels
chemistry is fun! all those molecules and stuff, it’s like playing with a Lego set
I did Keto and lost 30 pounds, But got to a point where My energy was gone and hard to lift Heavy.
So I raised My Carbs to about 75 grams or less a day and My strength and energy returned and I also maintained My weight loss.
what about your calories? are you in a deficit, surplus or just in balance all the time?
how much protein per lb? i watched your video about protein intake, but you didnt give any concrete numbers… seems like you are quite educated in this stuff, so i would like to see some more scientific videos.. anyway, thank you for your good work so far, you look young, fit and healthy! 😉
It should be also noted that in recent times Vitamin K2 deficiency is related to increase rate of arterial elastin degradation, and thus reduce arterial health, and increased susceptibility to plaque and calcification.. It should also be noted that VK2 levels fall in later age, thus increase CVD risk. There are a number of studies on this, lab studies on mice which showed rapid CVD death for mice bread to lack VK2 as against controls. ALSO as far as I am aware there is no lethal dose of K2mk7 People are well aware of the effects of K2 on artery minierlisation/calcification, but most unaware of the even more fundamental benefit of it on artery flexibility and health. Wonder why Okinawans live so long…. Natto
I might add a warning. Those on Warfarin need to be careful on vitamin K supplementation and refer to their cardiologist first.
that’s horseshit. People are on ketogenic diets for years and thomas delauer is one of them.
The crappy feeling can be simply avoided with some table salt and water.
potassium can never be flushed out of the body as it’s reabsorption rate is 99%. Also like 95% of potassium is inside the cell so this doesn’t make sense.
Keto contains a lot of veggies and fiber.
Here’s a study that prouves what says this guy is total shit
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4271639/
Keto is better for building and maintaining muscles for like 8 months +
I just wanted to throw something out there, I have been doing Keto off and on and now do I F as well as a few days a week carnivore, I’m doing this because these diet strategies are supposedly good for Alzheimer conditions which run in my family. Since we are talking cholesterol I found it a strange correlation that my GOOD cholesterol has always been high and talking to my brother he is the same as well as my mother who is loosing the battle with Alzheimer right now. Just wondering if any data out there is correlating the same thing. Thank you in advance.
30 secs max vo2 run and then 3 mins rest? no risk of cortisol?
how many times should i repeat that?
