I’ve been looking for a caffeine free cofee substitute! This is awesome! Thanks for sharing Christina!
the level of seriousness is hilarious, they should have all won 3 piece suits lolz.
Now I’ve had this kind of coffee.. I wouldn’t call it coffee, though. To me, it tasted like a medicinal tea and a weird, bad after taste (to me).. So disgusting. I don’t know how people like to swallow this nasty tea/coffee thingie.
You can actually get 2 pots out of those 2 scoops. Iced: just plan ahead and use cold water, takes a little longer but not that much longer.
Chicory is a plant in the Asteraceae family. Close relatives to it are dandelion and lettuce, and chicory as well is known for use as leaf vegetables with names like endive and radicchio. Other more distant relatives include sunflower, artichoke, tarragon, safflower, echinacea, chamomile, and many other plants.
Asteraceae is one of my favorite plant families.
Ever heard of pyroluria? It’s a genetic quirk that causes some people to get stressed and deplete all their B6 & Zinc.
I think coffee makes mine worse… but I’m also addicted to it.
I’ve also wondered about the mineral blocking effects of coffee possibly adding to muscle cramps and pinched nerves?
Yep, chicory and coffee is referred to as New Orleans style here in the states. One of my favorite was to have coffee (when not black)
Oh that’s great!
Korres you said? That’s interesting.
I will try it!!
Been drinking chicory for years. Use half of the amount you would for coffee and its awesome!
Hello Dr. Berg i found that Guarana is the best subtitute to cofee
Such a great video! Let us know if you ever want to try any different flavors:)
I love chicory root! My mom in law introduced me to this coffee alternative. Question to you, what do you use for dairy free alternative? I still would love to put creamer in my chicory root “coffee” but super nervous about what would taste good and be healthy
Looks good. I dont drink coffee because of the caffeine. I normally drink tea. This is great. Thanks
I thought there might be some more innovative recommendations here than decaf coffee, Dr Berg.
There are many milder stimulant drinks out there.
Maybe it’s because you are a coffee drinker yourself? You don’t take the alternatives seriously?
But coffee only works one way, and it goes against your philosophy. Coffee is a metabolic stimulant & will only behave like thyroid (increase t4 to t3 conversion) if you feed it fuel. That fuel is carbs. Fat is hibernation fuel (everything metabolically runs at a slower pace), so adding coffee to the mix will only give you a stress response (elevate cortisol). Some people enjoy this increased cortisol, though (it can elevate mood).
u look like tht james deen dude, was waitin for u to start fckin the btch on the right
Thank you very much. It does take along time to create a video, but it’s worth it. Thank you so much for subscribing my friend and I hope you enjoy the content. Have a great week. Josh
I can’t drink coffee because of the caffeine. Verry interesting! Thank you.
Have you tried sea grapes? They are all over the place here in south florida and are astringent, but not that bad of a flavor.
But those substitutes are not meant to be used during a fast, am I correct?
I am currently waiting for my dandy blend which is chicory root and dandelion root coffee substitute
What did you think of this caffeine-free coffee substitute? Are you enticed to give this a go?
It will mean the world to me, if you could take 2mins to provide me with the feedback on this video https://forms.gle/CR2NbMD5QuSPnUgB6
Radicchio, endive, curly (frisée) endive, and escarole are all leaves of various varieties of chicory. The roots that are roasted as a coffee substitute are from either wild chicory or any of a few cultivated “root” chicory varieties. The roots can also be cooked and eaten as a vegetable.
But Roma is not gluten free and teecino causes bloating for me anyway
Hello Dr. Berg, can I drink apple cider vinegar drink during my workout? Will be there any good or bad effects?
I wonder if adding chicory to Crio Bru might make the latter closer to coffee.
Hey Jess:)
I love Teeccino! I used to drink it religiously when I kicked caffeine 4 years ago. I now drink Trader Joes organic decaf but still love my Teeccino! They have a great ambassador program where you can get free samples to share with folks! Maybe even a giveaway!:) https://teeccino.com/your-teeccino-lifestyle/your-teeccino-community/teeccino-ambassador-program/ xoxo Kim
Yerba mate is healthy caffine without crashing effects. Dr Berg could you do a video about yerba mate tea please? It has many health benifits and packed with vitamins and minerals, it is popular south amaerican tea
Getting away from coffee was the best thing I could have ever done. Of course I was an addict and I had to drink 2-4 cups a day, but I was often getting heart palpations and anxiety attacks from the frequent pounding of my heart.
I will admit I was sad that I would never drink it again, but grateful I had pin pointed what was causing all of those problems.
This is a must for anyone struggling with what I had and looking for an alternative without having to give it up completely.
wonderful as usual.. but could we also drink chaga mushroom as a substitute.. thank you Dr. Berg
It also depends on the the brand of chickory coffee I got New Orleans chickory coffee I enjoyed that Zuric might be herble New Orleans chickory coffee is more flavor again it depends on the brand.
Well done I enjoyed your Chicory taste test and that milk & sugar helps alot next one you should try is would you believe a Nestle one called PERO in USA (here is Australia called Caro or Karo) Caro is made up of soluble solids of roasted barley, malted barley, chicory (86%), and rye. It is most often available in health food shops, but can also be found in many major supermarket I think it would beat your chicory bean rating as has that creamy mouth feel cheers, Mark
I really needed this! I’ve been looking for coffee alternatives, I’ll try this option.
Hi Christina, this video is awesome thank you. I love coffee and have been drinking a lot more of it recently so would be keen to try an alternative. I have also recently been adding it to chilli con carne recipe (along with dark chocolate), which tasted lovely. Where did you get the hand whisk from please? That’s a great idea.
Good show Sir. I have the stuff growing all over. As you mentioned, it is easy to spot when in full bloom. Great job documenting how you processed it.
I started with Four Sigmatics Mushroom Coffee however it’s still partially coffee/caffeine. This sounds amazing and I may have to try it!:) Thanks
Honestly I’ve been an avid coffee drinker for three years now and I’ve been trying to get off of it so this video could not have come at a better time!!! Thank you so much, new sub here
Dr. Berg…love you, there are other drinks..,but there isn’t a substitute for coffee. And, I say that in a light-hearted way. Happy Monday Doc.
Thanks for letting me know about this sub! what a great alternative
Such an interesting option! Thanks for letting us know the health benefits
The problem is that there is a solvent to decaffeinate the coffee, isnt it harmful?
I grew up in Louisiana and chicory coffee was very popular. I like it but it’s admittedly an acquired taste.
Okay, this sounds interesting! I’ll definitely try it out. Thanks, Christina:)
Will teccino or chai tea brake a fast and can it be make like a bulletproof coffee
Chicory coffee is a staple down here in New Orleans. But that’s a coffee/chicory blend. Community coffee, Luiziane RT coffee, and CDM all have coffee/chicory blends down here. Never had just chicory though.
The best US coffee and chicory blends are Cafe du Monde, French Market and Luzianne from New Orleans. They are definitely strong, dark coffees, not coffee substitutes.
It’s nice to see the That’s Not Coffee squad back, all dressed in your black That’s Not Coffee uniforms!
Honestly i had never heard of this until 9 minutes ago. Sound like a really interesting substitute. Will definitely try that out!
Benefits of Chicory Root
Reduces Stress. For anyone who has issues with stress, caffeine can exacerbate that issue….
Contains Anti-Inflammatory Properties….
Protects the Liver….
May Prevent or Delay the Onset of Diabetes….
Helps Manage Osteoarthritis….
Aids Gut Health….
Relieves Constipation.
I def do want to try this. Too much ocffee in my life these days!! Thanks Christina!:)
This is so interesting, because I’ve been looking for some coffee alternatives. Thanks for sharing this!
I really enjoy Cafix. It’s similar to Roma but tastes the closest to coffee than it and other substitutes like Pero, and Teaccino.
Great video! I have tried teeccino before, found it in my local health food store. It is an acquired taste.. Will definitely try Roma and have never been able to find Pero.
Try nofun Jo decaff coffee. The reviews are great. I’m going to give it a try.
I have dropped many of my eating habits the past year (soda, junk food, cakes, red meats, here and there I won’t have as much dairy) but it’s extremely hard for me to not have coffee. That is one thing I’m finding the most difficult because I also have it with organic sugar. Will this be a problem when it comes to my adrenal gland and the basics of dieting? I’ve lost weight everywhere but I’m trying to target lower belly fat. Thank you for your video! You’ve helped me a bunch.
Careful with getting too many chicory solids…it’s very fibrous and has been known to give nasty gas and cramps.
I would love for you to do what I eat Wednesday’s! Thanks for sharing this.
Great video! I swapped my coffee for brainzyme a while ago and I won’t be switching back it is so so good!
Roasted Chicory Granules are stronger than coffee but it tastes just like caramel flavored coffee to me. I brew it just like coffee with a little Ceylon Cinnamon because the health benefits are pretty amazing. I have Lupus lots of inflammation, gastric problems plus a few additional auto-immune illnesses so I had to make changes and stopped poisoning myself with processed food, meat & pesticide covered fruit & veg. I ran a fever for twenty years until I detoxed, began drinking lots of Distilled Water to keep my system flushed and stopped eating poison. I also avoid pre-packaged products that are full of chemicals. The only time I run a fever is when I come into contact with poison. My Rheumatologist is very happy.
Like Stewart, I always associate chicory coffee with New Orleans and beignets. The story (which may or may not be true) is that people in Louisiana used chicory as a coffee substitute during the Civil War, when real coffee was unavailable because the Confederate ports were blockaded. Apparently enough people developed a taste for chicory that they started mixing it into coffee once the supply lines were opened again.
Teeccino it is… Italians give Coffee of Barley to kids:)
Timothy you got that right!! and if it’s decaf I do without it..
pppppeace, in the meantime in the between time.. see you guys next time
Roasted Dandelion Root tea (I buy the Traditional Medicinals brand; organic, non-GMO) is a FANTASTIC beverage. It tastes really good and is caffeine free, so it can be consumed anytime of the day. Dandelion Root has some evidence of aiding liver function and digestion, too, so if that’s of interest to you, then I highly recommend you try it (I recommend it to everyone, regardless)!
Lol I found this video because this tea was in my house thanks
❤️ Drinking my first cup right now and it’s way more similar to coffee than I expected, YUM!!! As a current coffee addict trying to kick the habit, this is going to be my lifesaver!! Thank you!!
If there’s no caffeine…..then….what even is the point then?
Dr. Berg, Don’t forget the teas: green, black, fermented (pu’er, which has the benefit of inducing mental clarity and calm), yerba mate. Perhaps better still is maca root, which is a stimulant, but also has the benefit of increasing testosterone. All of these would be better described as alternatives to coffee. They are substitutes only in the sense that they are stimulants and can be taken hot.
There’s nothing wrong with coffee. Everything in moderation. A little bit of what you fancy does you no harm.
Dr. Berg, Why avoid coffee completely? I believe its good for you in small amounts. You said in a video just drink mornings.
My mom lived to 92 with 3/4 cups a day.
Never considered chicory coffee before. Will definitely give it a try when I find a café serving it. Appreciate you sharing the benefits nd side-efcts of chicory. Great video.
I drink cocoa powder with water and little bit of milk, no sugar.
I’m also a coffee lover. Chicory Coffee seems interesting and I can’t wait to try it.
I have afib and had to give up caffeine. I have tried numerous substitutes. The best I have found so far is Pero. Nothing tastes the same or as good as coffee, but Pero is very close.
U s/h dubbed the silent video; would have been entertaining.
Love ur smile. And thx.
Guarana is amazing substitute, longer mental energy / no drop.
Thanks Des. I don’t have a problem with weight gain. The opposite. ☺
Have you tried Crio Bru? That’s really good too, it’s roasted cocoa beans and tastes like a mild coffee
Oh man, three adult discussing about the deepest essence of the coffee, I can live with that. Do more like this!
Haha!..gas station coffee, church basement coffee…you guys are hilarious!
What’s the point of coffee without caffeine? How pretentious lol.
Most roast coffee beans are stale by the time they reach the shop shelves.
Wow! I would definitely love to find Techino. Have not seen that brand here in Ontario, Canada. I will search for it. Always good to have a good coffee substitute on hand. I have cut down to 2 cups per day and my goal is to stop altogether.
I don’t like coffee. I drink green tea with lemon, few cups a day.. what’s your take on this?
I did a Teeccino video on my channel last year. Still haven’t kicked coffee completely but I do like several Teeccino flavors.
Hi Josh….. another great video my friend. I used to drink Chicory coffee as a child. It used to be called Camp coffee. It was all we could afford. I’m sure yours will taste much nicer. Good information. Not sure we have it here. But if we do I will try it out and see if it reminds me of my childhood. Well if I can remember 50 years ago!! Thanks again Josh and have a great week. All the best, Mark.
since I stopped drinking coffee now I sleep everyday in my office at work. I need something that works like coffee, but wont leave stains in my teeth. I tried mint, lemon and green tea drinks.. it have no effect at all.
Why did I forget about this?!?! My friend used to drink this and I loved it!! Totally getting myself some
I love teeccino. I’m pregnant and it’s one thing I can drink!
Caffeine is my crutch. I don’t even like the taste of black coffee. I used to put 12 pkts of regular sugar to mask the taste, then I started adding local honey to it. Did wonders for my allergies and the taste wasn’t so bad once acquired. Then, I discovered Dr Berg and found out firsthand that it messes with my ketosis. So I now disguise the taste with sugar substitutes, heavy cream, ground Cinnamon, ground cloves, and/or coconut oil.
I tried to give up this dreadful drug once, but I felt as if there was an ax lodged in my head splitting it open every few minutes.. and once that headache starts there is no remedy for me. I will lay in bed nauseated and not able to see light nor smell anything strong. Invariably, I will throw up and feel as if my head is exploding in the process. The word ‘useless’ describes me in full when I’m going through that.
I really do want to give it up, but it’s like this terrible beast holds me by the neck and says, “You thought you could get rid of me? I don’t think so!”
I can’t see this coffee substitute helping me. My addiction to that 1 and only cup of coffee in the mornings is simply too powerful.
Gluten intolerant people beware, both Teccino and Roma contain gluten because of their ingredients. It’s just proof coffee is safer! Organic whole bean of course.
Common chicory, Cichorium intybus, is a somewhat woody, perennial herbaceous plant of the dandelion family Asteraceae, usually with bright blue flowers, rarely white or pink.
Very interesting content. Great camera work & editing. You have a new subscriber from Canada. Thanks!!
Chicory is a caffeine free coffee substitute.

Yes I so love this herbal coffee! I found it at whole foods..tfs
Looks like chicory has more benefits than coffee except for waking me up in the morning:-) Do you have an alternative to vanilla creamer that tastes similar?
I will have to give this a try. I stopped drinking coffee 9 years ago when I was pregnant with my youngest. I had been a coffee drinker since I was 12 with no issues, but when I was pregnant with her I began getting severe migraines from it. I had hoped it was just pregnancy related, but I’ve tried drinking coffee twice since then and got migraines both times. I miss coffee quite a bit, so I’m hopeful that this will fill that need for me!
Drinking coffee while watch you guys drink stuff that’s not coffee but kinda is coffee… Nice. Keep up the good work!
If you’re working on weight loss in a ketogenic diet, I’m guessing you’d probably want to avoid Teccino or Roma because of the carbs?
theres a horrid loud high pitched hiss on ypur vid i had to stop watching
The fragance is a huge part of the pleasure of drinking coffe… so I guess I’ll never give it a try… And… what is the point of drinking this if we have decaffeinated coffee?
add some condensed milk and ice to the French coffee/chicory coffee blend and you have a Vietnamese iced coffee drink 😉
We need a video for vegans/vegetarians on what vitamins/minerals foods that they need because they are missing etc.
I can relate as a fellow coffee lover. Thanks for sharing this information! I have been looking for more coffee alternatives. I never realized they used the lower part of the blue pant in Chicory.
I leave my coffee out. If it goes stale is there an adverse effect to health?
i know how harmful coffee is but the problem is there’s no substitute out there that gives you that full depth of flavor that only coffee gives, so now i’ve resorted to buy’n the cheap stuff to give my chocolate drink some depth.
Such a great video! Let us know if you ever want to try any different flavors:)
This Doctor reads my mind and based on that he creates his videos.
Thanks ! Used your link to get to Amazon and then opted for the variety pack sampler for every flavor. I enjoyed your review. It solidified the product research I had completed and totally swayed me to purchase.
So far as I can make out, those Cyrillic letter mostly say that it’s a coffee-like substance with no caffeine. (I don’t speak Belorussian, but I do know the Cyrillic alphabet.) it also says “Smolyemov” (maybe the brand name?) and “Klassychyeskyy” which I’m guessing probably doesn’t mean “high-class game of chess.”
Dr. Berg, can u explain why caffeine can cause weight gain and does it effect cholesterol?:))
This enthusiastic coffee user thinks Teccino does not taste like coffee, and I got the multi-pack to taste each one. Unfortunate fail. But I might try the other solutions given here to rule them out.
Community makes chicory alone, but you have to brew it, it is not instant. I think it may taste a little more true to coffee than the instant stuff.
Does coffee speed up or slow down fat loss? Like 2 espressos?
Its normal to add a sweetener and if you imagine tough times like during the depression of the thirties when there was no coffee or tea available would you be more swayed towards drinking this Chicory I`m guessing yes either that or Dandelion
Chicory is a prolifically common roadside weed here in Arkansas and is a very close relative to Dandelion. The roots are ground and roasted for a coffee extender. About a cup-full of the sky-blue flowers add a delightful floral bitterness to a bottle of white wine. The plant is very wholesome for the health. Chicory is grown commercially in the upper mid-western US. In France it is grown in the dark (blanched) to make Endive. Cafe du Monde and French Market are commercial blends of chicory with coffee.
Yo, thanks for this. I’m writing a book where the characters try chicory coffee and this is really helpful:)
yum! I’m not drinking coffee either and i’ve tried Dandy Blend and enjoyed it but am going to try this next:)
Reduced stress, inflammation and no caffeine? Sounds like a powerful substitute. Nice
I have never tried this type of coffee, such an interesting video. I love my morning cup of coffee though, but I can give it a try. Thank you for sharing
I just love the efficiency of these videos, short altho all info you need is there and straight to the point. I’ve bought Caro Original from Nestle right before I started Keto cause drinking coffee everyday made me burping constantly thruout the day and sometimes even acid reflux. But reading what it was made of I almost threw it away (Barley, barley malt, chicory, rye.) as I thought these are all grains so I can’t have it! I didn’t even check the nutrients scale. Thanx Dr. Berg, now I can substitute it for coffee
I will have to try this. I have used decaf coffee for a while because I don’t really need the caffeine, but this is worth a try, and maybe some other benefits too.
Yes, please. I’ve had to give up coffee so this is a great video for me.
