Monitor your fluid intake, particularly when your workout is long, intense, or hot, and especially all three together. The risk of rhabdomyolysis increases with dehydration. That said, don’t go overboard; more fluid is not necessarily better. Don’t exercise hard on low-calorie diets or after long fasting periods. The athlete will have pain, weakness, and swelling in the muscles affected as well as significantly elevated levels of creatine kinase (CK).
Hydration is the foundation for any athlete with ER; management can also include dialysis or surgery. Stratifying the athlete into highor low-risk categories can determine if further workup is warranted. Many previous studies have reported that sufficient intake of water is effective in preventing heat induced disorders.
Normal hydration could ensure the homeostasis of body temperature.131, 132 These relatively simple and common sense measures may prevent heat induced disorders and subsequently reduce the risk and onset of exRML. Since the degree of water loss in a high temperature environment.Whether it’s a first week of CrossFit training or an early season football practice, how can athletes and coaches reduce the risk of rhabdomyolysis? Gradual exposure to high-intensity training.
The condition is treated intravenously with a mix of saline and bicarbonate as a way to increase urine alkalinity and reduce protein buildup in the kidneys, Clarkson says. That’s more than most athletic department officials should have to know, given how easily preventable rhabdomyolysis is through proper hydration and exercise moderation.Conclusion.
Exertional rhabdomyolysis is a rare but potentially fatal condition that should be considered in any athlete with significant post-exercise myalgias. Uncomplicated cases can be managed with rest, oral rehydration, and outpatient follow-up.The following guiding principles are paramount to preventing exertional rhabdomyolysis: 1. Transition periods are particularly vulnerable times for athletes and demand careful attention to progression in volume, intensity, mode and duration of activity. Examples of transition periods: a. Athletes.Stay well-hydrated before, during, and after the exercise.
Don’t allow your body to get too hot, since being overheated can help bring on rhabdo. Don’t take your first class in a heated exercise. There are two primary groups of people at risk to experience rhabdomyolysis: athletes, and people with McArdle’s disease. However, because people with McArdle’s often otherwise appear completely healthy, symptoms have historically been dismissed as laziness or poor physical conditioning.Athletes can help avoid hyponatremia (low sodium levels) by consuming enough top sodium foods and practicing proper hydration/fluid replacement.
When working out, drink water and use electrolyte replacement fluids for workouts lasting more than an hour or workouts in very hot weather.Individuals at risk for rhabdomyolysis are often out of shape and just starting an exercise routine (3). Thus service personnel and athletes must have substantial aerobic conditioning.
Make sure exercise training sessions do not exceed the current aerobic capabilities of the participants involved. You can prevent rhabdomyolysis by drinking plenty of fluids before and after strenuous exercise. This will dilute your urine and help your kidneys. In addition, athletes should be aware of risk factors for rhabdomyolysis that includes recent alcohol use, use of certain medications including cholesterol-lowering medicines, and ongoing infection.
Staying well-hydrated, especially while exercising during hot and humid conditions, can.Joyner says there are four key factors all athletes should be aware of to prevent the risk of developing rhabdomyolysis. Get the most out of your.Rhabdomyolysis is a condition in which damaged skeletal muscle breaks down rapidly.
Symptoms may include muscle pains, weakness, vomiting, and confusion. There may be tea-colored urine or an irregular heartbeat. Some of the muscle breakdown products, such as the protein myoglobin, are harmful to the kidneys and may lead to kidney failure.

Almost a year ago I had a crush injury and had Rhabdomyolysis along with broken cervical spine in 2 levels, 3 brain bleeds, broken arm and bad crushing trauma to my right leg. I continue to have tenderness in both my legs from the ankle up to knee and was wondering how long this can last. According to my medical records it was apparently cleared up. I don’t remember much of being in the hospital especially ICU for over a week. Not one of my doctors mentioned it I found it in my medical records. My urine is not dark but I don’t seem to urinate as much as I used to. My family physician said it should be cleared up by now but I can have lasting tenderness. I am wondering what kind of doctor I would need to see since I’m having issues. Thank you.
I did some exercises on Saturday 20-04-11 which included pullups after not having exercised in a while. I didn’t do that many pullups. 3 pullups, and then 9 negative pullups where I jump hold and resist as I go down with gravity. 3 sets of these. Muscles were sore the next day but I had a hard time straitening my arms fully, and on Tuesday 3 days later, I noticed my arms were bloated, biceps, elbow and forearm which I’ve never experienced before. I can move the arms fine and work on computer and bend easily but it’s just more bloated than I’ve ever seen.
It’s Wednesday now and my arms are still swollen. I don’t feel pain, but the swelling has me worried. My urine is normal, not brown or red.
Any idea what I should do about it? I’ve been googling like crazy but only find rhabdo, although I don’t think I have this because my urine isn’t indicating it? Any idea on what I should do, just drink lots of water and give it a few more days to see if swelling goes down? Or go into ER? I’m afraid they’ll misdiagnose me, or keep me in there. Should I do anything to reduce the swelling and if so what can I do?
This literally happened to me back in 2015. I thought i had aids or some shit.
Does anyone know if having the trait puts you in the high risk category for covid? My son has it and I’m trying to learn so I can keep him safe.
i had rhabdo from jogging for 2 hours to get the last bit of fat off fuck its scary pissing some bloody cola water. the next day i was fucking aching in pain but looked shredded overnight. the problem was i wore layers in the summer doing crazy cardio and that day i forgot my water bottle but lost track of time and not realising i had jogged for 2 hours i started feeling drowzy. now i do cardio in a controlled enviroment and take electrolytes at when i get a slight bit to sore from weights as it is usually a bit of dehydration. i learnt my lesson that day not to go ott and prepare. and contest prep usually has people on low sodium which can cause rhabdo so dont cut sodium completely and and learn how to munipulate electrolytes during peak weak.
Great video, wish you would have focused more on treatment/management
i have sct and i am a boxer i get tired quickly for some reason and wondering if my fitness can get any better because of sct
My cpk levels were at 57000..u can get it from energy drinks too
Thanks for this. Really helped with my A&P 2 final term paper!
This is why I sometimes get cramp in my leg after working out
I got it in jail, first time there I was threatened with a knife and was told to do workouts after never really working out in my life. I did 400 squats and 50 sit ups, they told me to jumping jacks and I literally couldn’t even one. Just fell on the floor. The only symptoms I felt were the extreme pain and the aggravation. I was told by my cellmate to stand up for myself and even after being beat to the absolute max I decided I was gonna fight the guy. Side note but on’t worry I won, the guy got sent to PC and I got my respect in the unit so it felt good everyone in there knew what I went thru so they were trying to help get thru the fact that I couldn’t even walk. I had the oil colored piss in there but didn’t think anything of it. Got out on a Sunday and went to work Monday as a useless fuck but worked really hard and just got out and felt great. Tuesday morning tried to take a shit and just fell into the toilet when trying to sit, still oil color piss. I finally said this enough. Went to the hospital and they had no idea what was wrong (rare) neither did I, expected to get out that night. Little did I know I would spend the next week sitting in a hospital bed in the most depressing state just watching shitty tv, my ck was over 20,000. Luckily they let me have my Xbox (didn’t appreciate all the edibles I brought in though) now that I look back on it I can laugh, but trust me it’s a real and very scary thing, you forgot to leave out the fact you can die from it
Training if your on statins can cause an onset of Rhabdo. I experienced this about 5 years ago after being on Crestor for less than 2 weeks. To this day it flares up on me chronically at random times threatening serious damage to my kidneys.
I play varsity level rugby and I’m also a personal trainer. I was tackled pretty hard with the ball sitting right at my abdomen during a game and it hurt pretty bad. I couldn’t breathe or stand up right away. 30 seconds later, I caught my breath and forced myself to get up. A week later, I was doing core exercises at the gym. I experience what seemed to be normal D.O.M.S a few days later and what soreness normally goes away within 3 to 5 days, stayed for about 10! I knew something was wrong because I would get excruciating midsection cramps. Nothing like a menstruation. I went to the emerg and was diagnosed with Rhabdo. I thought it was cool until he told me that I could possibly die from kidney failure if they didn’t get an IV in me right away. My level was 4,500. Turns out my kidneys were fine but I was admitted for 3 days and told to drink 3L of water a day once released. I stopped playing rugby for about 2 weeks, checked my levels again and I was down to the 300’s. I decided to play again and got the same injury however my levels only went up to the 600’s. The doctors realized that I wasn’t going to stop playing the sport I love, so they told me to just make sure I stay super hydrated before and during the games and it would help keep my levels down. I was also told that its a common injury seen among elite level athletes which was flattering lol.
I believe I have/had this. About 3.5 days ago I did my first hard workout in a couple months and ended up pretty sore the next morning. 2 days after the workout, my hamstrings and pectorals were extremely sore and somewhat painful. It woke me up at 7 AM (second day after workout) and about a half hour of stretching let me get back to sleep. My legs were stiff for the rest of the day. I couldnt straighten my legs without significant pain, nor could i move my upper arms passed 90 degrees to my chest (Backwards and upwards).
I passively drink a lot of water (I keep a gallon jug by my desk and bed at all times). The second day after my workout, i figured i needed to loosen up the muscles and so i hit the gym again for some light cardio. My stamina wasn’t hindered at all, but i didnt have the vertical leap or upper body strength i was used to. For the most part though, I think it helped. After the light workout (about 52 hours after the initial event) I noticed the dark, almost brown urine. I immediately researched it and had spent the next 24 hours resting with a heightened water intake. My legs feel almost full healed now (about 80 hours after the initial event) and my pectorals still have moderate soreness with lessened pain).
I did not admit myself to a hospital so I can’t report cpk levels, but I hope the info i provided helps in some way. Don’t freak out if you think you have this condition. Just take care of your body until it heals and take precautions to ensure it doesn’t happen again (i.e. ease back into your workouts)
I have the trait and my father died from the disease at 26yrs old. I was told not to worry about myself but when hiking or running I have horrible chest pains and can’t breathe and wheeze for 3 days. Both my son and daughter have the trait
I have the disease. And it hurts like hell! My kids have the trait. And believe me, I make sure they drink plenty of water. I don’t give them juice or soda like that. Every purple moon, I’ll let them have 1 only. I make sure they’re hydrated.
Thank you for this video. There are a lot of things that I’ve learned. Plus, there’s a lot of ignorant individuals that knows nothing about this disease, or the inheritance of it.
Nice video. Was a patient of rhabdo. I participated in a Spartan super race and overexerted myself during the race. During the middle of the race, I experienced searing pain in my feet and had to be carted off. I thought it was just naturally really sore but I couldnt sleep at night due to the amount of pain and swelling in my feet. I had to go to the hospital where they took tests and told me I had rhabdo. I had to get intense IV fluid transfusions and numerous blood tests until I was well enough to leave. The worst part was not being able to walk for 2-3 weeks after and the doc recommended me foot therapy exercises. Kinda felt bad for my kidneys:/
I actually had this about a year ago I was 220 lb at the time overworked my body to the Limit pain was so bad I went to the hospital but doing so save my life as the doctor told me if I hadn’t have gone in that day I probably wouldn’t have lived. Worst pain I’ve ever felt in my life.
can a person get rabdo with low impact exercise, and is there a connection between lactic acidosis and rabdo. I had a slight uptick in my lactic acidosis which was treated with saline in ER.it did go down however I’m worried.WHAT SHOULD I DO OR CAN I TELL IF THIS IS TAKING PLACE. THANKS
Brother I am from India, i have also sickle cell trait but not getting any problem. During sport I become more thirsty and feel fatigue as compare to other.
Little does my INFANTRY ARMY buddies know…They all may have because of our deployment.
Noot much helpful.May have elucidated pathophysiology properly so there cud have been train of thoughts.
I live in the Republic of Turkey. I have the sickle cell anemia patients. gibi.tanrı unbearable torture is a very difficult disease, pain crises, help us
Hi
I have been going to gym for almost 3 days and from yesterday onwards I noticed that there colour difference in my urine, now it’s like a dark reddish colour.
I have consultant a doctor she just said that i need to consume more water. I am little worried that whether i have this issue.
Please somebody help me with this.
Just finished my first week of training in an intensive law enforcement course. The physical workouts were brutal, and I was stupid and didn’t hydrate even close to enough for what the situation called for. Went home and woke up this morning in a state. The muscular pain is horrifying, especially in my arms which feel bloated and taut. When I peed, it looked like coca/cola was draining out of me.
That’s when I started to get worried. So I did what any sane person would do and… I youtubed it: brown pee, dark brown pee, cocacola pee, dark brown pee overtraining, dark brown urine diagnosis, etc.
Finally I came across this video. You’ve just gained a new sub. I’ve just gained a trip to the hospital to get intravenously hydrated.
Thanks!
Dr. Cario Oller, I need help. On both on my shins I have one circle wens. I thought it was fat tissue but it is not. When I run, play futball or basketball my circulation is bad, and that two wens become bigger. They bloat, almost like they are going to explode. My mobility in feets reducess. I dont know what it is. Thanks
Is the worst muscle spasm pain in the world. After I notice my urine was faint purple went into a clinic. They sent me straight into the ER. Got admitted immediately for Rhabdomyolysis. My cpk was more than there machine could count! 3 days later and bunch of IV later I was good. Although i frequently still feel muscle spasm but no pain.
Tiger Fitness i don’t get why i ask u these questions and other people decide to respond when i Just want your reply cause that is who i’m directing my? towards
I have this I always go home from school because I end up hurting my body even more I was in the hospital for a week because my kidney was effected by it I just got picked up right now because my hip gave up on me.
Natural lifters try to look like the lifters who cheat and have the artificial look.
When I started training again, my trainer was very cautious about Rhabdo with me. I was extremely overweight, but I had been a wrestler, muay thai fighter, and BJJ guy. He was worried that because I knew how to push past pain and work really hard, but because I hadn’t done shit for a while, that I was at a higher risk. I didn’t get it, though. Dropped a bunch of weight and got feeling good enough to start back at BJJ. Now I’m doing comps, still training with the trainer once a week (I do 3 strength/conditioning sessions a week).
I was told I had it as well….just going for a routine blood test…got a call the next day and the nurse told me to go to the emergency room, cause my muscle enzyme was extremely high…though she never mentioned Rhabdomyolysis, i was told later it was that…of course, I ignored her and didn’t go…cause I felt fine…so obviously it wasn’t too bad….i was functioning decent and nothing wrong with my urine…I do train to failure on my sets, which I have come to believe is a big cause of this…this past year, i was in the hospital for another reason, and was told I had it. another case of it…I was there for 4 days..otherwise I would have went home in a couple of hours….so obviously my training is the culprit.
had that after a car accident. supposedly. idk I was fucked up. I lost 60lbs in 2 months. that’s cause I was only 190. broke both legs
I have sickle cell trait and a chronic condition and learning disabilities but I’m keeping it permanently I have rights and it’s my body and it is my life it’s about time people started making there own decisions and choices no forcing and abuse and having right onto someone when no one raised anyone for patients. It’s about time moral support and advice and also respect
Lot of love from me, a student Paramedic based out of Leeds x
Informative giving clear insight of the disease in short but covering all aspects well. Thank you so much..
Marc, I don’t know if you remember my email. but if you recall me telling you that I can’t lift without going into rhabo. FYI.
I got this also my cpk levels were about 70k I believe. The pain jesus christ worst pain in the world i was literally crying just because i could not handle it. I wanted to die rather than have the pain. It felt like i was being tortured I could barley walk i lost all strength to walk was hospitalized about two weeks. Way to prevent this drink lots lots lots and lots of water & never go overboard when exercising just gradually start slow and work your way up
Hola amigo te escribo desde España llo e sufrido una radilmiolisis me podrían kedar secuelas en los músculos??
Rhabdomyolysis is the worse pain I’ve ever felt in my life it was SO hard to walk every time I tried to I would either fall on the floor or hang on to someone or something if you want it to be cleared drink a lot of water they said I have to drink gallons.
Guys i have this mother fucking disease,,
And it only occurs when i reach my limit at running then the pain start to occur.the point is that is it gonna help me reduce the probabilities of pain if i can do running without a limited point then day by day increase my limit? So the pain doesn’t happen fast
I had Rhabdo in 2015 when I fist started my fitness journey. My dumb ass took a free offer from a trainer who immediately pushed me to the limit my first day. I had not lifted weights since my senior year in high school in 02. I was obese and out of shape, he should have known better. Put me in the hospital for 7 days. That same workout today would have me barely breaking a sweat, inexperience trainers have to understand you can not just throw someone off the streets into an intense workout. I have since learned a ton about fitness and I better understand my body. Rhabdo sucks.
I took a spin class and went too hard. I experienced tremendous pain in both my thighs. They were stiff, tight, and I could barely walk. Imagine anchors attached to your thighs. I went to the ER because they pain was just unbearable and the doc diagnosed me with rhabdo. When I went to the ER, my CK levels were at 66,000…it peaked to 360,000 the next day. I ended up hospitalized for 5 days. When they discharged me, my CK levels went down to 94,000 which is still pretty high. After a week of home rest, it went down significantly, to the normal range. It was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced. Needless to say I will not take another spin class ever again.
Think i may have this shit now. Hit the gym for the first time in almost 10 years a couple days ago. Did biceps and chest. Now i feel like someone has slit my arms and chest open with a knife. Also noticed that my urine is a little dark, not dark as tea though. Been drinking about 120 oz of water a day. Nervous as shit:(
In the hospital right now for Rhabdo, CK numbers were at 239,000. Didn’t notice I had it until 2 days post workout though when I started peeing Dark Brown. I had assumed my sore legs were just part of coming back into heavy leg free weights training after a few weeks break but it was enough to get me. On second day of IVs and almost at full recovery but this is definitely no fun. Wish I knew about this before I got injured. Will train a bit differently from now on.
This helped me understand. I play basketball ball and I have sickle cell and I sometime get pain on the court now I know what to do thank you
could you give a view on phenibut? have you heard of it? not many people have heard of it
I have the trait and I haven’t experienced any abnormalities while working out. I run track and dance
I’m a SC trait and I happily graduate from physical education university sometimes I get those legs pain
I only worked out for about an hour one day and got it. Granted I hadnt worked out in about a year and my partner is was Iraq war vet and is still active. I was stubborn and was doing everything I could to keep up with him. Two days later I was in the hospital for a week. My CPK was at 80,000. I have a really really bad/dangerous habit of pushing myself harder than I need to. At 23 I’ve already had 3 knee surgeries, broke my nose, and got rhabdo.
How are people getting this doing spin classes when it’s 100% concentric?
thank you FSU! Pensacola born & I have the trait. This video is amazing
when I train I don’t push the envelope. I shred it. every single workout. if I don’t train like that every time I feel like I didn’t do enough. my mentally is like a drill Sargent. it’s been that way from 3yrs. I don’t know any other way. I hope I don’t get that syndrome
I’m from India.
I have a sickle cell trait, it hurts me a lot.
Just don’t go full ham when exercising. Focus on fully controlling your range of motions. Go slow and steady. Drink lots of water before, during, and after.
Had Rhabdo after training a little too hard after a sustained period away from training. I did’nt build up slowly to what I was once capable of doing. Its not fun and yes your pee does come out green. Stay hydrated and don’t go too hard especially if you have had time away from the gym.
Was it a work out that caused Rhabdo? My wife was hospitalized for the same number of days.
Its sickening how the trait is overlooked as something “not that serious”. Everyone with the trait has there own experiences or none at at. For me if it’s too hot is like I feel drained even when not doing anything strenuous. I am more thirsty then the average person etc. Some of us experience the same ailments as those with the disease, just on a lower and slower scale. Those with SCD have problems with their bones, teeth the crisis etc.. right now my back bones are affecting my hip, I have lost teeth due to my body not being able to absorb calcium effectively, the way how my body breaks down proteins are similar to a person with SCD but just slower. My kids that do have the trait share the same exact symptoms even though we dont have the full blown disease. I just feel more studies should be conducted in regards to how SCT affects adults.
This had me hospitalized for over a week the worst pain I have ever felt in my life.
I got the Sickle Cell Trait. I am an athletic guy who works out 3-4 days a week. Most times, i struggle with energy when trying to max my reps. For example, my aim is to do 10 reps but i can only get between 6-8. Mostly by the 7th rep, I am exhausted. It been like this since i have started working out. I don’t know if it is the “Crisis” affect occurring or if it is a lack of fitness.
It took me a whole year to recover from rhabdo. I would get blasts of fatigue out of nowhere and muscle pain all the time. I thought I wouldn’t be able to exercise again. I’m natural by the way
Most lifters who have excessive muscle mass “enhanced” will show this if blood is taken after any kind of moderately intense weight training. While normal is 300 max for a male, mine has been as high as 6000-7000 if taken shortly after a weight training session. I have seen numbers much higher than that too. One football player in medical literature after a workout had a level in excess of 100,0000 and was ok and recovered. Many doctors see the number and freak out not realizing that for someone with excessive muscle mass, this may be normal after an intense training session, especially if you train several days a week. It is debatable if this is an issue for athletes as this can be normal for someone with excessive muscle. I guarantee if just about anyone, you included Mark were to take blood and do a test within a couple hours of an intense training session your numbers would be way beyond the normal range to the point where you would be diagnosed. The normal range which is what many doctors only look at is for a very average muscled individual just going through normal daily activities with no intense activity at all. I am so glad you are discussing this topic.
Any ideas on why this is becoming more and more prevalent in wildland firefighting? More importantly what can we do to prevent? Increase ectrolytes, CoQ10… anything else? Seems inevitable if you have a poor diet and take supplements like creatine
I have trait & didn’t learn I had it until almost 5 years in the marines.
Down the road I got severe rhabdomyolysis & compartment syndrome in both legs, which I almost lost.
Wish people would further educate on stuff like this, as I was told it’s nothing to worry about just drink more water.
I had rahbdomyolosis just last year as a young teenager. Thought it was just a bicep strain and nothing more so didn’t get it checked out for almost two weeks. Didn’t experience any symptoms other than the pain and loss of motion. But I had been icing it and drinking so much water that It was almost gone when I got to the doctor.
Informative Video and factually correct. However from a biomedical scientist point of view, the utilisation of bicabonates (i.e. alkanisation treatment [limited due to severe side effects:hyperkalaemia]) to increase the blood and urine pH is still debated. Due the debate whether the myoglobin is blocking the kidneys OR whether it is caused by the oxidative damage by free radicals from the heam(iron). These free radicals oxidise isoprostanes (in the membranes of the kidney) and caus damage.
Stop pushing to the point of pain. That’s wrong. If you cant do your workout the next day because of pains, you did more harm than good for what you’re hoping to achieve. Push above your limits, but dont push to failure.
My CK came back at 7,300. I think it may be an effect of my workout routine because I could barely move my chest muscles the day of the blood work. My doctor is very concerned and has me doing rounds of iv treatment. Is it that serious?
I have it to but I last longer in only get the pain the day after. which is my resting day damn u father this is all ur fault now I have to worry about slowing my self in the soccer games
I had rhabdo which caused acute renal failure and my shoulder muscles broke down. I was training for a competition and wasn’t taking care of myself. I was unable to move my arm for almost 2 months. I thought I was going to die. They told my family that I wouldn’t make it 24 hrs after I was in the hospital. Today I’m healthy and everything is working. My shoulders get fatigued really easily now. But I’m grateful to be alive. This is no joke
Not at all. Mine was a rigorous exercise of an hour and a half and that happened… I’d say 90 degree heat at night time.
Was this a crush injury? Mine hit 1800+ after a severe muscle cramp following 4.5 hours of exercise in 100º+ heat.
I have the trait and can feel severe bone pain in my shins and arm at least 2 time’s in a year. It’s aggravating severe pain smh.
Great! Video, I just experienced Rhabdo and you’ve answered several questions I had concerning this condition. I had never heard of this before experiencing it. Thanks again
Mine topped at 156,000
It’s day 7 in the hospital and now I’m at 7,000 as of 6AM. Hoping to go home later today
sounds like my wife, and she complains about me tearing ass around on a motorcycle….. We never learn do we.
I have had Rhabdo 3 times now all from working out. It’s not that rare for me now…. Also…there are some medicines out there that will increase the CK in the bloodstream and make you at a higher risk of Rhabdo than the average person.
I just got out of the hospital with rhabdo. I had pain and an upset stomach for 3 days, very intense muscle pain especially in my top shoulders, I told everyone I knew it felt like my muscles were torn and ripped up. I couldn’t lift my arms without wincing in pain. My pee was a very dark brown. I was sweating profusely yet freezing cold at the same time even while at rest. I would start pouring sweat like I was running. Results came in and I was halfway to kidney failure with only a few hours left of active kidney function. My CK (Creatine) level was 1,133 when they should be no more than 170. I am not an athlete, I started a new job that is very physically demanding and I wasn’t drinking any Pedialyte or dehydration combative drinks. I thought I was dying. The medics told the Dr it was anxiety even though I do not suffer from anxiety and have never had this experience. Horrible experience all around. Please make yourself aware of the signs and symptoms of this, and always ALWAYS ALWAYS STAY HYDRATED AND LOVE YOURSELF
I got rhabdomyolysis fro hyperthriodism last year and had to get flush out for a week worst week of my life. Also my docter said it is rare to get rhabdomyolysis from hypothyrodism crazy how the body works. Btw nice video.
I just got out of the hospital from having Rhabdo. I was training a lot before, then I stopped for about 6 months. I did 1 workout that was way too intense and I didn’t build up to it at all. I was working my biceps, and for the next few days I could barely straighten them. Luckily I didn’t have any adverse affects on my kidneys. Kinda scary to think that training hard which is supposed to make you healthy can potentially kill you. At least I know now and can act accordingly. I’m almost certain I had an even worse case of rhabdo before; basically doing the same thing, stopping training for a long period of time then jumping right back in. I didn’t have any symptoms besides soarness thank goodness but the soarness was 3x worse than this previous case where I was in the hospital. I wouldn’t have even known I had it, but I was already in the hospital for a separate reason; while in there my blood pressure was high, I asked the doctor if it could be caused by soar muscles, which lead to them testing my blood for Creatanin Phosphokianes (CPKs) and my level was at 7800. 1000 and above is considered Rhabdo if I recall correctly. I suspect that lots of people who train hard have had rhabdo but just chalk it up to being soar since no other symptoms really present unless it is a severe case. More awareness should be spread, ecspecially in gyms and workout/exercise programs. This is great video discussing it though. It is appreciated:)
My husband is in the hospital right now with it. He was in ICU four days. Its been a rough week. I’m glad you’re better and I’ll be glad to get my hubby home.
Both my daughters and I have sickle cell trait, when I take them to the bounce house or chuck e cheese or the park, I make sure they drink water and take 5 to sit down and drink, I have the trait as well
In the process of preparing for NCLEX.
Thank you: Specific and Focussed.

Dude I just had a Rhabdo scare yesterday. So crazy that you uploaded this today
All thanks to Dr. Umoru who cured my son from sickle cell with his effective herbal medicine which I ordered.
I have the full blown disease, I WORKOUT and make sure I’m hydrated at all times. I eat HEALTHY and don’t eat meat. I don’t stop my life just because I have sickle cell disease and both my children have the TRAIT and WORKOUT and run track I make sure they still well HYDRATED and eat HEALTHY as well they be fine… I won’t let them stop living life
Just happened to me, symptoms are, a pump and burn that is very unusual, like 2-5 times more than regular. If you feel the pump is more than usual. And are wondering why. Just stop. And never ever go to the gym drinking less than a gallon of water a day, being dehydrated can attribute to causing this. If your muscles burn and are so pumped and that pump and burn takes HOURS to go away. You have rhabdomyalysis, chances are you’ll start pissing cherry cola soon. Go to the ER immediately if your pissing like this. You can die very fast. This is no joke. If you have taken some time off the gym, make sure you ease into it very very slowly. Do not do your old workout without building up to it. Because this is likely to happen if your muscles are not used to high intensity training. You have to build up to it. Especially if you had time off
All my life I was told not to be concerned about the trait unless making a baby
Fantastic video, I’m going to use it with my nursing students.
Came from r/residency, and you earned a new sub. Love your format: straight to the point, accurate information and knowledge you can apply to the bedside. Looking forward for more videos!
Ck level of 230,000. Done through heavy lifting in the gym. 3 hospital drips in 2 days and drinking a lot of water I am recovered. As I am only 20 years old I’m sure over time I will get my strength back and be able to get back to 100%. At the begging I could not move at all. Now I can move fully and also lift weights 2 weeks later. I don’t have my full strength back and I can tell my muscle are still recovering but I believe I can easily get back to 100% strength as your body can recover from anything if you try hard enough. I would say I am right now at 40% after 2 weeks of recovery. So hopefully within 4 months I can be back at 100%
Omg… Why isn’t there a standard protocol for opioid overdose with rhabdomyolysis or is there a known sequence when compartment syndrome is presenting???
Im almost positive I have this right now… would it be e tremely bad to wait about 7 hours to go to a doctor or should I go to an urgant care unit right away

Short, sweet and to the point; just how I like it; Thanks for sharing!!! I’m tutoring a nursing student today and I wanted to make sure I have my facts straight. Thanks so much!!
My kids are athletes and they have the trait just as I do. I was told that there are different types of the trait. If this is correct, how would I be able to find out what types we have?
I had rhabdo about 9 months ago and my CPK hit 150,000 but I was hospitalized. Just hydrade a lot and get proper advice from your physician.
I over train all the time. I get excruciating pain that keeps me awake for nights. I do full body workouts high volume every other day. I gotta cut back, I aint getting any younger.
I almost died from exertion with my sc disease, this is very real!!! I’ve been struggling with this disease it seems like forever!! PLEASE take care of yourselves and GOD BLESS!!!!
I’m sitting in a hospital bed right now because of this it’s very painful. I had surgery this morning on my lower back. luckily my kidneys are both perfect.
My dad has been in the ICU for 5 days with this…this is a very informational video and i thank you for explaining everything in the way that you did
I have it too and working out has helped me a lot. The most important thing for me to stay full of energy is sleeping enough quality hours. Drinking & Eating healthy and building muscle also helps to make your body stronger. The pain will stay the same tho, but if your body is stronger you wont get a crisis as fast as if you don’t. I use heavy weights and don’t do high intensity workouts that often. Start out slow and keep listening to your Body. But when u feel sick u shouldn’t overdo things. It’s important to remember the things that work out for your body. Some yoga exercises also give me a crisis because of the random blood flow/ circulation changes.
MY heart and prayers go out for you and your daughter,im a ups man in az,and i had rhabdo in aug of 2010,i had a routine of drinking a clensing tea once a month,i normally do it on saturdays, but with the combination of heat(115) and my tea,and running all day working,on my 7th hour i drove my ups truck to emergency, and they took me in right away.i spent 6 days in icu,the doc said the tea i had to clean my body, had removed all my electrolytes,so my body crashed.sorry for your lost.
Im in the hospital for rhab mine is at 2900k
Also for hard workout..
That’s why u hear a lot of highschool, football players die, because they don’t now the have, and breathing,is apart,of sports so they try to fight threw and dire
I am a Kinesiologist and trainer with the trait. I work out 15-20 times a week, teaching classes and personal training, on top of my own fitness regimen. I’ve done this for 20 years. I’m 41. it’s doable if you do it right.
I had a rhabdo experience which put me in the ICU for a week. I had a crappy “coach” who was not listening to me when I was telling him I felt like dying, it all came to an ugly climax one night when I was doing cardio on the stair master and my quads just absolutely gave out. I had to call my mom to come pick me up and take me to the hospital… Listen to your body people, not some jerk wad coach who doesn’t care about your well being!
My middle school and high school cross country and track teachers didn’t know what sickle cell was, and they are the best in the state….
SO HOW THE HELL DIDNT YOU KNOW THAT, I MEAN, AM I THE ONLY ONE THAT HAS THIS THAT SCREWS UP MY HOBBIES?
Excellent!
Will recommend your videos to my interns.
Thank you for your videos.
I am very active athlete and i have a SCT. Is it advisable to be running with elevation mask?
WHEN MINE IS HIGH, I JUST MASTERBATE AND IT GOES BACK TO NORMAL
Happened to me after a hard leg workout. I felt exhausted but things didnt get scary till 2 hours later. My calves and quads cramped up to the extreme and my heart rate was through the roof. Had my girl call 911 and stood 3 days in the hospital getting tons of IV bags. My levels were at 25,000 and they didnt let me go until i hit 7 000. That shit was crazy.
I have Sickle Cell trait. Yes, even though I look white, I am in fact half Puerto Rican, born and raised. It is not widely known that 36% of all Caribbean people have some form of Sickle Cell, even if they don’t have African ancestry. I found out I had the trait the hard way. In my youth I was an avid work out freak. My spleen exploded inside of me and it almost killed me. I informed all of my family and it turns out they ALL had it too. And like me, they had no idea Puerto Ricans or other Caribbean people could have it. In fact, 40 years ago my Emergency Room Doctors were totally baffled that a non-African could even have Sickle Cell anemia.
I think this video piece doesn’t go far enough to warn people. Not to mention that it implied that Sickling of the cells within people who have the “trait” is ONLY brought on by “exertion”. I think the video gives the impression that people with the trait are almost like “carriers” but are not effected by the disease unless it is triggered by exertion.
I’m no Angiologist (blood expert), but I’ve lived with disease almost 64 years now, and I’m not so sure that even the so called “experts” fully understand Sickle Cell in all it’s forms. I think we who have the trait, just like those who have the full disease, have red blood cells that are deficient (sickled or flattened) cells from the time they are
manufactured, which is regularly. In other words, I think people with the trait have a percentage of the disease just like those with the full blown disease. No pun intended, I don’t think it is as “black and white” from suffering the effects as they Medical profession and as we see here in the video presumes. I think people may have the trait in varying degrees leading all the way up the full blown disease. Am I wrong? Or does anyone else suspect this?
Another symptom instead of not being able to straighten your joint not being able to bend a joint. (triceps) Yikes!! From 17.5 then like a million hang cleans the next morning. Glad you’re OK
