Barefoot Marathon Runners Show Why Running Doesn’t Require Shoes | New York Post
Video taken from the channel: New York Post
Should You Wear Shoes or Boots? Marathon walkers in Europe often wear hiking boots for long-distance walks. This may have evolved out of the military traditions of their longer walking events. For walking overland on trails, lightweight boots or trail shoes.
Most walking-specific shoes are designed to give you miles of cloud-like cushioning, with support and breathability so you can wear them all day. Those with wide feet will be able to find shoes. The Transcend is a hard shoe to pin down. On paper, it’s a plush stability shoe, but the updated GuideRails system is subtle enough that neutral runners can wear it.The Saucony Ride 10 is my shoe of choice for marathon training and racing this season.
The Freedom ISO 2 is lightweight, super-comfortable, and fits like a (very breathable) glove. The shoe well-regarded for distance running – it is known for its comfort, flexibility and reasonable price. If you find yourself training in shoes with mesh uppers but the marathon is happening in the cold weather, look into getting a pair of thin thermal socks.Real racewalking shoes or running racing flats or trainer-racers are your best bets. Marathon Walking.
Walking marathons—or even three-day ultra-marathons—is another form of athletic challenge that is growing in popularity. How you walk one of these events will dictate what you should wear.If you plan to walk a marathon, you should be regularly wearing any clothing, shoes, socks, gear pack, headwear, etc., during your walks that you plan to wear during the marathon. If you have an old race number, pin that on also while you practice so you will know where you want to place it on race day.
Walking shoes might work well for short walks, but for marathons, your feet need that extra cushion, especially in the heel. Running shoes offer better airflow so your feet can breathe better than. These are the only kind of shoes I can wear so my feet don’t hurt at the end of the day. This particular pair has a wide bottom that gives wonderful support.” Best for Trail Walking: The North.
To provide support where your force is the heaviest, good walking shoes should have good arch support. In general, running shoes have more cushioning in the heel and forefoot. Walkers need less cushioning than runners but still need some. Running makes your feet hotter and running shoes often have mesh to allow for breathability.
Sometimes, soft running shoes also make for comfortable walking shoes. The soft FuelCell foam delays foot fatigue without being mushy. The forefoot is also very flexible due to the articulated outsole and the soft midsole – this helps the foot transition naturally. There’s a lot of room inside the smooth-fitting upper for the foot to splay. To choose the right level for you, consider where you’ll do most of your striding.
If you’re on the treadmill or indoors, you’ll want shoes with a smoother sole. Hikers, trail walkers and those who stay outside in cold, icy weather will want tread with deeper grooves.Always wear the socks that you intend to wear with your walking shoes, thin or thick socks can make a big difference to the final fit. Remember to replace your shoes every 500 miles or after one marathon, after which time they tend to collapse (if you haven’t!) and stop giving you sufficient support. Do NOT wear walking boots.
Best Walking Shoes #1: New Balance Men’s MW411v2 Walking Shoe If you are looking for comfort, then the New Balance Men’s Walking Shoe is a great choice. They are made from 75% suede and 25% mesh, these means that they are not particularly waterproof but they are breathable. They would be perfect for longer walks, and for warm conditions. When you’re a nurse, you want a shoe that can withstand the rigors of a marathon, Dr. Langone says.
Brooks is known for its quality running shoes, and the Ghost 12s are no exception.

Let’s support ❤️ each other
ok honestly i think that this is fuckin stupidwhy would you run without shoes?we invented shoes because we needed them simple as thatdo you wanna step on a fucking glass, i dont think so
If I had these, I’d make a whole outfit and I could be a villain or superhero called something like “The Kangaroo”.
I love The Run Experience and how much they have contributed to the running comunity but don’t buy into the UCan hype. I get it they need sponsors but you’re basically paying $10.00 for a quarter cup of cornstrach. Go to the store by a box (organic if preferred) for $2.50 add to your water with whatever flavor you like if you want a you can add a touch of zanthun gun to keep it for seperating. It’s 1/6 of the cost, same nutrition value.
marathon is 26.2? I guess, barefoot marathon is 8 miles? Btw they have nike free runs which I trained for my marathon in and it killed my feet.. I went with a shoe with more support and I was injury free
100-150mi and mountains nah bro not barefoot or with sandals
im just gonna say that scott cramer did this first although im happy that yes theory inspired you
Running barefoot is more effective on solid earth. Concrete and asphalt are quite hard and don’t absorb as much impact as the earth.
Y’all with the mean comments have no soul, no dreams, no aspirations!
Change your mindset. ✌️ ☮️
Your totally right. People who run barefoot and land on there heels the same way you would in shoes are no doubt going to do themselves injury. That’s why before you start running barefoot you should ensure you are using proper technique i.e. running on the balls of your feet, your heel should never touch the ground. Heel striking with running shoes gave me a bad back and my dad knee pain, both of which no longer occur when we both started running on our toes.
I’m so happy you showed that teacher in the teal shirt that you can do it he sounded so negative talking to you.
funny, when I press my big toes down while others are lifted, pinkies on my HANDS, stretch out and up instinctively?
My whole life I’ve gone as barefoot as possible. I would constantly forget shoes places, or have to turn back to retrieve shoes to enter places. Barefoot football/soccer is INCREDIBLE! Haha as long as the other players are barefoot too a stiff boot to the top of your feet feels pretty lame.
I’d recommend ‘Born to Run’ to anyone, not just runners or athletes or what have you.
And by the way, unless the whole road is paved with glass shards and dog shit you will not step on it unless you are blind. Eyes are pretty useful. Are you telling me that when you wear your pillowy cushions, you step on shit and glass all the time?
This settles it once and for all.
Men need to become barefoot and naked just as he was for millions of years.:)
@jolteon43 I might be fuckin stupid then, because I do sometimes take off my shoes to run barefoot for a few miles. It’s weird though because I don’t run with my eyes closed (do you?). I’m a “barefoot runner”, but only when I run without my shoes on. I do think however that a barefoot running “cult” is a little too fundamentalist for my taste. So are the defenders of arch support and pillowy clown shoes. Cool off people!
Minimalist running tore my Achilles tendon and gave me plantar fasciitis.
This whole debate is stupid. What is the big deal? You don’t like shoes, run without. You like shoes run with them. You like both? Knock yourself out and alternate. Why be so fundamentalist about everything?
Humans did NOT evolve with shoes on. Do you think it is at all possible that shoes throw our natural movement or gait out and cause more problems than good? Even the best running shoes make my Knees twinge when I run, (which I do several times a week) while running barefoot gives me no aches, pains or twinges anywhere…
Everybody gangsta, until the guy replies to people saying he’s slow.
So close, 10 more KM’s?……….that’s the proverbial half way point………….You’re almost there when there’s 100 meters left
Don’t be the dude or woman that says, “you’re almost there @ mile 15, 18, 20, 23……..just say, Great job, keep going!!
next thing you will hear about happening in nyc is planking under a bus it’s the latest craze hitting the nation!
I’m not sure that barefoot running was supposed to be done on city streets. Gross…really gross.
@acidcrashguy The earth was created by grasshoppers. You are not able to see, hear, smell, touch, taste or sense these grasshoppers in any way. But this is the truth. If you do not believe this you are ignorant. So do your research and if you find this claim to be untrue, reject it.
Amazing video bro keep up the good work i loved this video please keep posting things like this i loved it!
Me:mom can we watch sonic? Mom:we have sonic at home. Sonic at home:
Can you run a marathon without training……..starts training.????
I was hiking once and I felt a pain in my toe and half of my toe nail chipped off
@gocanadago1000 are you kidding me? 1000 AD people had shoes fool. they didn’t want to get cuts stepping on shit. for fucks sake.
how about stepping on glass or something that will hurt u on the ground….esp in NYC…phhh, idiots
@1488slav walking on parsites and bacteria doesn’t get you infected, especially if you go barefoot in the city opposed to the amazon rain forest.
Me and a guy called maurice reidy ran a marathon in monschaü Germany 2011 with no training, and we drank all day the day before got about 5 hours sleep, no bullshit
These people are disgusting and retarded. Shoes exist for a reason dumbass.
The energy you use to push that thing is 2x the normal energy use to run coz the absorber then its the complete opposite of an upgrade, its actually a downgrade. Law of physics!
Notice how the people with ugly feet are running this. For, they have nothing to lose.
@Pandabearflyer So how do you explain the prehistoric practice of persistence running? And how come lots of people are completing 100 mile ultramarathons without arch support and without injury?
Why on earth would evolution have created feet that needed support from shoes in order to run (where running is one of the most primal things humans can do)?
I’m no superathlete but i’ve started barefoot running with no problems (tip: start gradually).
Try it yourself!
I could see the military showing a little interest in something like this. Imagine the advantage for infantry troops that can run at that kind of speed.
well done sir, you should make longer videos!
https://youtu.be/8-KNc8fKLNY guys this is my first running vlog of a mile workout. i would truly love your feedback to improve content. hope you guys enjoy!
@eLLriDe420 lol such BS. people needed shoes 1000 years ago, and they need them now. what happens if you step on broken glass? dumbass.
Dude I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video!! I wish you luck in all of your future endeavors.
until this is socially acceptable, vibram fiver fingers are the best way to cure footpain
@groundbeef98 haha yah like “the guy is like wearing no shoes is like this is peacfull tell he steps on a fucking rock”
@JeMzZ360 lmao dude. go ahead and step on glass and rusty nails and see if you develop calluses.
Your can get all kinds of bacteria and viruses from the ground. Running bare foot, not such a good idea.
Thanks Bob& Brad:) about the third test, I’m not able to push down the big toe at all while the others toes are up. So what do you suggest for fixing that? Thanks:)
What do you do when ur tired of constant weggies from bullies? Invent a faster way to run!
Barefoot running or walking is not as painfull as you might think. It requires a transitinal period, however. Walk on barefoot untill the soles build up callous skin, much like the hands do in people accustomed to working with bare hands. (Ever seen people pick up red-hot coal embers with bare hands? A variation of the principle.) It is how nature desgined it before shoes were invented and became popular with industrial production.
“8 mile long marathon” a marathon is 26.2 miles not 8 miles
omg wow….. if u come over to nz, u will see me bare footed in a mall even. i cbf putting shoes on.
@eLLriDe420 ok bro, when you step on broken glass or a needle, you’re going to wish you had shoes.
You know those e-coli warnings they tell you about for dropped food? Running barefoot would give you 10000x more bacteria. This would be equivalent to simply landing in India.
@liquidpersuasion “people needed shoes 1000 years ago, and they need them now.” what makes you think people 1000 years ago needed to where shoes?
I’m marathon runner.. never give up… And I’m from India❤️
Sitting down before a marathon, or any race for that sort is actually the worst thing you could do, it reduces the blood flow to your legs and makes it harder to warm up before the race
Hello I know this has nothing to do with the video but I’m a cabin crew and I stand or walk all day long in heels or in uncomfortable shoes. Sitting in front of customers is not allowed. I try to stretch my feet, my legs and my lower back every day. However, every morning I would wake up and have heels tenderness or pain. What is wrong with me. How do I get rid of this?
Btw, I have flat feet. I thought what I have would relate to having flat feet but I have binge watched all of your flat feet videos but my pain is not in the area that you showed.
Thanksss
What if you have bunions? I have on one foot, limited flexion, but no pain.it hasn’t hurt for years
Running and completing are two different things. Being in your 20s and trying it and being in your 30s and trying to run without training are two different things.
I’ve ran 25+ marathons without training. I run like 2 times a week at most and the most I run is like 4-8miles
Thank you so much for all you do!!!
I have been running for about 15 something years but have never done a 50 miler or ultra is on my race calendar 😉
Thank you for all the tips on gear it really help a lot
Can you recommend some sock that keep my feet cool I get hot feet with almost any socks
I have tried asics. Bálega ultra thin, regular socks and I end up stopping to take them off:(
I have been running wo socks
Runners the MOST BORING people on the planet…. stupid as well.
I’m not an Olympian but I have several gold medals to my name for track events
ooops, I slipped and ripped the skin of my entire arm!
And fastest man in the world? My arse runs faster than that.
If you want efficient, fast and effortless running (hopping), have a look at the Australian kangaroo. The faster they hop, the less oxygen they use!
Plain amazing. I ran my first my marathon at collapsed at the end, One of my toenails had her medical treatment. If this is your first marathon, you did amazing!
Wow…. At the end/middle, you pushed yorself to keep going.. Pure dedication…. Sorry about your toenail, hope it is better!
you deserve like a hundred thousand more subs bro that was awsome
Why there’s a check box emoji in the title? What’s that suppose to show?
Could have used this video when I did a 100K last month and my previous longest race was 800m…
Still recovering from multiple injuries to both my feet.
Video saved in case I can ever run again lol.
OMG YOU LITERALLY SPLIT YOUR TOE IN HALF BRUH YOU ARE A TROOPER
They say practice for a reason that’s so you are completely fine after you do an activity
I don’t think an average person can just go and say hey I want to run a marathon and not get inured or finish at 4 hours. You definitely need training to actually enjoy it
You should publish the plans of the structure of your invention, it would be great to be able to build and use them! (: excellent frend
By Colombia
running barefoot is TERRIBLE FOR for feet. I am a physiotherapist and the arch in the bottom of ur foot is shaped in a way that requires support on the entire surface. You are slamming the entire weight of ur body against ur heel and toes without support of the middle of ur feet. PLS PLS PLS dont barefoot run its SOOO BAD FOR U
I wana try running a marathon and see how far I can go my goal is just half way but if I can go beyond that That’s just an extra
Any personal accounts from those who are/were flat footed that run with minimalist shoes?
@eLLriDe420 That’s a completely fallacious statement, try going to the north pole and telling me you don’t need clothes. We aren’t perfectly made you know
Man, one ultra in I said I was done. Now about 5 in and it’s the only way to go! Absolutely love it!

I often use a bike-jersey (short sleeve), a size bigger than the one I use for biking.
Its got great pockets amd can be more or less zipped up/down.
Sorry, YOU are wrong. Flat feet are caused by shoes. In fact, shoes cause nearly all the problems feet develop. Going barefoot in the best. If they get dirty, wash them in the shower or a hose outside. Shoe soles have way more germs and cause dirty carpets in houses.
Sure, running shoes aren’t natural. But neither is pavement.
Feet aren’t meant to run barefoot on pavement but they were meant to be able to run on natural things such as dirt, grass;etc
One thing is to run and finish a marathon and another thing is how you finish it. How did you feel after it? What other injuries did you have? That is very important.
When I prepare my body for a marathon by training months before the race, not only I do it to finish it in the best possible time, but to finish it in the best possible condition, that is to say, no injuries and no damage to my body.
Hmm… if this is true, why does EVERY Olympic runner wear shoes?
A few weeks ago i ran barefoot on the sand on the beach 30km
Only issue i had was blood blisters on my soles
My legs felt great
Just have to gget used to the barefoot stuff
lowkey this made me super emotional by the end, that was dope dude, good job
They say no training and they still train to get ready no training is when u dont do anything then u go and do the marathon
@HawtyNathaniel search vibram fivefingers, there very awesome. wanted a pair but couldnt afford it
The second one was his toe was falling off and he said he wants that one
The one only non-barefoot runner easily caught my attention at 0:09 ahaha
And to think we have these races cause a Greek had to warn Athens that the Persians were coming
Better Patten that before military does. This could go somewhere
woah man longest distance i ran was to go to the kitchen from my room
why does this reminds me of the tuning exams from naruto or the entrance exam from mha
In Europe the buff is more a fashion item among trail runners than really being used. Most people just wear it around the neck, even if it is not cold
Your theme song is up there with “Yesterday” by the Beatles.
@acidcrashguy You are under no obligation to furnish proof to me but generally speaking, I find that if people have proof, they fall over themselves to show it, especially on Youtube. I have, also, found, generally speaking that if I have the audacity to ask for evidence of even the most outrageous claims, I’m told that I’m close minded or spiritually unaware or ignorant.
To the 152 people that disliked this video, I want to know why, give everyone reasons why you disliked it.
Great information! I always run with sunglasses & hat for sun protection! Plus, POCKETS are fantastic!; the more the better!
good one. now for some big toe strengthening exercises? and btw Bob, when do we get that video showing what you did to improve your left hand so much? thank you.
Congratulations man.
My first one was in 6 hours end up walking. It was great thank you for sharing.
Can you make any suggestion on sunglass with bifocals I have trouble seeing my watch day or night and when it’s bright out my eyes hurt and headache. I can see 3’ or more but I can’t see my watch or read.
@groundbeef98 haha i know hey look a peice of glass ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
@eLLriDe420 And I guess we don’t need anti-biotics when we catch a fatal disease because we weren’t designed to survive it. You win by defining your statements yourself. I think perhaps we are arguing with semantics (so often is the case on youtube) and actually we may not strictly dependant on shoes but they are certainly beneficial. Then it just depends how you define need
As a yoga professional, I have spent most of my adult life walking about barefoot. About 18 months ago I started to notice swelling between my great and second toe, pain in the metatarsophalangeal joint especially during elevation gains when hiking (wearing boots), and increasingly limited mobility. Turns out I have advanced-stage hallux rigidus, likely due to a severely stubbed (felt fractured) toe about two years ago. I have no other joint degeneration in the whole rest of the foot and gout has been ruled out.
My point in sharing all this is to not take your big toe for granted! Hallux rigidus is pretty much irreversible (I may have the joint fused in future but for now I have to wear shoes virtually all the time, with orthotics, including one that minimizes dorsiflexion of the great toe). Uphill walking, running, lunges, some squats are all very difficult now. I have to be quite creative to stay active.
I agree with all the points Bob and Brad make in this video. Sadly, barefoot running will not be possible for me but other than the toe mobility exercise, I have and will continue to practice the rest of these. Best wishes to everyone out there!
This dude looks so fast but also so slow at the same time. Does that make any sense?
Could our heart and lungs handle running that fast?
Imagine spending years making boots that allow you to run 50MPH
Only to have a heart attack mid run
Was anybody else thinking during the whole video “what if Usain bolt tried these on” I am speed
An 8 mile long marathon? So they ran 8 miles. Not a marathon.
Can you run a marathon without training well to RUN a marathon you have to run all the way surely. I have never understood people who say they ran a marathon but stop to walk a few times, that’s not running a marathon. Don’t get me wrong it’s still a good effort. But the people who claim to have run a marathon while stopping are taking the hard work and effort away from the people who actually run the whole way.
I just wanted to watch how to do sprints and strides properly, bumped into this video and now I’m crying… I’ve never ran a marathon… I’ve been solo running ever since. I ran my first half-marathon around a huge lake by myself, with a bottle of water and energy gel. I ran a race only once… Now because of the quarantine I could only run in our front yard which I do 12km for an hour every morning. This Saturday I plan to do 21km still around the front yard. I even got the idea of running my first marathon distance here. I’m a little scared about that thought but also excited… I might really give it a try. This video is so inspiring… Thanks for sharing!
@MattFremstad um you are sorta of correct if you look it up in the dictionary the first definition is ‘A long-distance running race, strictly one of 26 miles and 385 yards (42.195 km)’ the next two definitions would match your idea of a marathon. But to strengthen my argument during the The Persian/Greek War Phidippides ran 26 miles back from the Plain of Marathon to Athens, bringing news of the Athenian victory over the Persians, and he died of exhaustion after he gasped out his story
Currently, I have very weak knees.
Do these put more or less tension on the knees?
I am moving onto 5th grade!!! Wish me luck on the bleep test!!! Oh, and by the way, good job!
Hello there, I want to know if Penlargerem System, will work for me? I notice lots of people keep on speaking about this popular natural male enhancement.
OMG 7:46 I just saw the Philippine flag is raised wrong. that’s a big disrespect.
This could fix the problem with human feet being fucking bad… Less moving joints in the feet should be a lot of stress relief and would therefore mean less or no pain when the wearer becomes old
As a teenage runner, I was plagued with shinsplints, year after year. I thought it was “me”. I lost tons of training opportunities, while trying to recover, again and again. I never ran long enough to get good. Then, in the late 1990’s, I started training barefoot. I have never gotten “shinsplints” again. It was the shoes, with the stiffer soled shoes being the worst. It is a lasting regret that I did not know sooner.
What if Usain Bolt will use that? So it will be the fastest of the fastest man in the world!
I can understand running with no shoes
but it is dumb to do it in the dirty ass city streets
or on any concrete/asphault…
Rookies.
@Pandabearflyer…are you serious?? humans are DESIGNED to run barefoot. Shoes werent even INVENTED for 99.9% of mans existance, so how can you possibly think that running barefoot can be bad for you?
The thing is that it kind of defies how our body works through physics. A normal size human would run faster than that because of the length of the legs and rotation of the arms. Sadly this really would not increase speed
Feeling a bit cocky after this passed with flying colours Merry Christmas x
Hey! I recommend wearing two pairs of socks (the first one inside out and the second one outside in) and get a shoe at least half a size bigger than your full shoe size. Your foot expands one inch when you run and all of that friction from sweat and the inside of your shoes makes your toes want to DIE. Anyways, congrats on the run! You’re very inspiring! I’m proud of youuuuu:)
People not respecting the distance. I had a plan for my first marathon. Ended up running a half 3 weeks ahead of schedule and it fucked the whole plan. Respect the distance lads
Your beginning of your videos are way too long, please shorten them
Little piggies wow illuminating!!! I’ve had plantar fasciitis for years I try to stretch (mostly my hamstring though) I’ve even had surgery on both feet and none of my many doctors have I ever showed me any foot or ankle exercises crazy! Thanks guys great video!!✨
He needs to prove his product.. go heads up sprint with Usain Bolt first.
I say cycle, don’t run, it’s way better for our joints. You can get just as much exercise and visit more cafes!
Spends years developing a boot to make you run faster
Literally runs same speed as before
You guys haven’t spoken about watch. I’m planning to buy gps multisport watch for longer distances 12+hrs and I really want to hear your thoughts. Which of them has good battery life, gps tracking system etc.?
It’s all fun in games until someone decides to throw Legos on the runners route
Why do these remind me of the Portal longfall boots so much? I feel like he got some of the design from that.
I see a lot of people say he’s not running fast, but they aren’t taking in consideration that the boots make him taller, thus the illusion of his height makes the vertical distance he’s traveling seem slower
Funny thing: we were evolving in that direction, then we invented agriculture.
Nice transhumanism tho.
FYI Date stamps
2:32 Ankle flex
Sit on chair, knee & ankle vertical with plumb line (stick). Move hips foward along chair past plumb line, while heel maintains contact with floor, not lifting off.
3:34 Big toe flex
Big toe to flex upwards at least 30 degs.
5:18 Toe flex
Big toe & heel flat on floor. Rest of toes flex up.
6:41 One leg 30 second balance.
Time how long to balance on 1 leg without putting foot down or using hand on a surface for balance.
Bob and brad I love your channel
Try walking barefoot everyday, make sure you focus on leading/pointing your big toes
The tests Brad & Bob mentioned in the video are also necessary for Barefoot Walking. Do not underestimate the effects by using barefoot shoes. Normally our feet are weak and lazy or even distorted by using generic shoes from our early childhood. I am 68 of age and use Vibram Fivefingers and Vivobarefoot for six years now and after a start period with injury there are only benefits. A lot of benefits!!
Well done mate! Crazy respect for you! Was mad motivational!
Why is this called “without training” when the first thing he does is go for a 17k training run?
We all gonna ignore that this dudes playing a video recorded by someone else
Ew why am I hearing this certain sample sound I’ve heard from somewhere before it’s a HUD sample sound
@RUDY2295 How about you go run around barefoot and see how dirty your feet get, you dumbfuck.
Excellent videos as always! I’m getting back into running, it’s killing my hips… But my ankles and knees are OK, grateful for that:-)
