Not as lightweight as the Reebok Floatride Run Fast or as prominent on race courses as the Nike Zoom Vaporfly 4%, the Cloudsurfer is still a top option for.Road Review and Bottom Line So, after two weeks of short runs on the treadmill, the road, and a few flat trails, I can say the Cloudsurfer will stay in my running shoe rotation. It’s not my “go-to” running shoe, but it is light, comfortable and solid enough for most of my 3-5 mile runs. The On Cloudsurfer is very much a shoe that falls into the first category, tipping the scales at 330g (men’s size 7.5 UK) but feeling positively sprightly when you’re running. The heft is unusual.
The Cloudsurfer is a neutral running shoe, which I like and the heel cup is supportive but not overly stiff. It’s immediately obvious that there is a lot of cushioning in the sole of the shoe. Walking in the shoe feels comfortable and when running the shoe is nicely cushioned underfoot, especially in the forefoot.
The odd thing about the Cloudsurfer is that dirt does not enter the shoe around my ankles anywhere near as much as my other shoes. I assume this is because of the lacing system that allows a snug fit around the ankle without restricting movement. The Cloudsurfer by On Running is great for a road shoe. If you want a light-weight shoe then this is it.
I like how it is designed to improve the foot strike by helping you midfoot land rather than the heel striking. They come in around $159.00 but I think it’s a good price to pay.The On Cloudsurfer is a uniquely designed road shoe that looks just as good as it performs. The Swiss designed trainer was made for and by athletes and features what ‘On’ categorizes as level 3 cushioning. The company offers 4 different levels of cushioning overall.
The Cloudsurfer comes in a very nice and sturdy black box that contains, in addition to the shoes, an “ownership card” and an extra pair of laces. The standard laces are in a lime green color, the extra ones are black in case you want to go for a more understated look. The RW Takeaway: The Cloudswift is On’s answer to overly plush, lackadaisical running shoes Foam cushioning tubes compress upon impact, then spring back to.I’m new to running, and I’m a fairly large guy (240 lbs). After a few weeks of regularly taking uneventful 2-5 mile jogs in Reebok Zig shoes, I thought I’d up the ante to 10 miles.
After that, my right knee began crying out for mercy. Running with the On Cloudsurfer is like night and day.On Cloudswift Review Summary The Cloudswift is something very new from On, not only does it look unlike any other On’s it also has a different feel to it while running. If you’ve ‘run on clouds’ before, then you won’t be disappointed with the Cloudswift, On’s latest lightweight running shoe.I tested the Cloudsurfer, which is meant for competitive runners looking for a shoe for both training and racing.
The Cloudsurfer is not noticeably lighter than the Cloudster and Cloudrunner models, but the materials are vastly different. The Cloudsurfer has a mesh.I always appreciate a shoe that can take a little pressure off the joints. I don’t think this is a shoe for everyone, but if you’re looking for something different – slip on a pair.
The On Cloudsurfer is priced at $150. Thomas: This almost went horribly wrong. My first run in the On Cloudsurfer. On Cloudsurfer is a versatile running shoe and excellent for professional or say experienced runners that come with an adequate cushion.
The agile shoe is capable of transforming the running energy into a forwarding thrust and makes it easy for running. The running shoe is perfect for extensive training and Triathlon running. On is an emerging brand who can make a superb stability running shoe.
The Cloudflyer is solid proof. The shoe looked and felt unlike anything in which I have run before. Their looks piqued my interest. Then I quickly realized the Cloudflyer was more than just looks.

Thank you for your reviews, mr. Ginger Runner! Regarding On shoes, I got a pair of their basic model On Cloud. Absolutely love them. Very comfortable fit and cushioning is fine, so I’d even love to use them as my everyday walking shoes. Lacing is ok too, faced no problems, by the way On provide normal lace and a stretchy one, depending on how you use them. As for running, they are built for speed: very responsive, but stable, and being flexible they really make your feet work. These are city/ track running shoes, so I haven’t tried them on trail, but looking forward to try their trail version, On Cloudventure.
Noticed the Cloudflyer’s funky lacing style.. Was that on purpose?
Not my type of shoe I’d dare say, especially with the rocks getting stuck.
Sticking with my faithful NB MT10s and asics sortiemagic.
“this shoes are gonna last you a long time” mmmmh are you still sure about that? I loved every On running shoe I’ve tried so far but they wear off sooooo quickly
I’m moving from Adidas BOOST to ON. Adidas has nothing on ON as far as quality. I love how I don’t get the foot burning sensation that I got with BOOST in my ON.
Great review, I enjoyed watching you a lot, keep up the good reviews and beautiful running movies coming. I have one qutestion, are you rocking the suunto ambit vertical lime?
I use the Cloud, surprisingly light for size 12, one for the best fits for my food and I’m still surprised how much I enjoy running in them. The Cloudflyer and Cloudsurfer feel too heavy.
The Surfer….Too hard on the metatarsals. Pods have gotten smaller with less spring back/rebound. I still have a pair from at least 6 yrs ago-I wear for comfort on the street. Got a new pair a few days ago big diff from the original/old construction. Making a lighter shoe has, in my opinion, changed this model in a negative way. Skimping on materials but not price. Will be trying the Cloudventure, hopefully they maybe closer to the old Surfers.
This fucking guy is a rambling not stop talker. Fucking take a breath
Dear Ginger Runner, I did not like On running shoes at all. My go-to shoes have been Hoka CliftonsSpeedgoat 2, Altra Olympus, Torin, New Balance and Salomon, but On Ace are a game changer just saying. I hope you review them.
I use what I assume is their main shoe, The Cloud. It’s definitely not heavy, not even close to being a heavy shoe (in fact the website says it is the World’s lightest fully cushioned running shoe). Also, it is lowish drop and you can be efficent or not as you like. I agree somewhat about the rocks (they do come out) and the high price though. Also, they are not terrible but worse than a normal shoe on icy or slippery surfaces.
the thing with the rock is a very big disadvantage. I hate that
Thanks for this review! I have the On Cloudventures and absolutely love them…they are the most durable trail runners I’ve ever owned, super comfortable, and give your foot decent protection too. To me, they are totally worth the higher price tag because they last for hundreds of miles more than my old Peregrines or Lone Peaks did.
I’m now on my 3rd On shoe so you could say I’m a fan. I mostly agree with this review but don’t get the point on shoelaces in my experience they have THE BEST shoe laces out there. I’ve never had any shoes that had so durable and at the same time efficient shoe lace. I experience absolutely none of the problems you described. Maybe you’re tieing them wrong?:D There’s a TED video on this that changed my technique a while back maybe that’s why they work so magnificently for me and not for you? Google it and try it out:D
Hey Ethan! I know you really enjoy your light weight shoes, so maybe it’s time to try out the Cloudflow, or the newer Cloud X both of them are very light! It would be interesting to get a review from you about one (or both?:D) of these models. Cheers and keep running!
With that beard you look like a happy go-lucky President Snow before he went all twisted and evil!
Brilliant reviews my first stop when looking for a new bit of kit. I have the cloudrunners, brilliant have done 650 trail miles and still going strong. Have just ordered the cloudflyer. Many thanks GR.
Is in your pans to make a review for a couple of pairs that have take a lot of positive response. the pairs are new balance 1500 v2 and under armour gemini 2. that’s for me. keep the good work.
I gave them a chance when they brought out the clouderunner in a winter edition with gore-tex. During the first few runs i injured myself on the lower back, from then on i was very sceptical and used them only as a casual winter shoe
but in my opinion the most anoying thing is the squeaking when you run or walk in the rain!
and i payed 290.CHF (quiet same in $)!
i was so disappointed.
I’ve got roughly 200 miles on the previous generation Cloudsurfer and they’ve definitely convinced me. I was very skeptical of ON shoes before I tried them out. They have become my go-to shoe for anything but technical trails or muddy conditions. The comfort, fit, and durability have shocked me. Can’t wait to get into a new pair soon.
Glad to see this review already after having them for like 2 months. CloudFlyers. Before these shoes I probably haven’t bought a dedicated running shoe so for me they are light weight and I wear 11s too. They do pick up gravel from my street but never inside the cloud pods, just in between two pods. The day I got them, I just went to shop to get something to start running again and pulled off a surprising almost 5km of mixed running/walking.
Before them I had pureboost all terrain version.
I agree with the pricing, in Aus they launched at $250 and still not all colorways that you get in US.
Which one would you suggest if I’m after a new pair? Thanks.
Which sneaker do you recommend Thats very soft and comftarble for work purpuses/day to day
I’ve got the Cloudflows, never getting back to generic crap by Nike, Adidas etc. Best running shoe by a country mile.
Review after 8 months of average usage (15-20 miles a week) >> Cloud Flyer tends to pronate more than the Cloud Surfer. (Could be a higher heel drop issue). Notice that if the sole curves too much into the arch in the mid foot foot will tend to pronate upon hitting the ground. Thin laces are bad design on this shoes. Depending on your footing while running, cloud flyer may cause Calcaneous pain due to a little firmer out sole at the heel pod compared to the mid and front section of the shoe (The last pod could be a little softer at the heel). All and all very comfy insole and pretty good concept. These shoes can outrun their competition with a little tweak in the design. The most important point to bear in mind is that no one has a perfect straight stance/footing as the shoe designers may have assumed. It seems that sole is primarily designed for straight impact force absorption. I will rather go with the Cloud Surfer for a more balanced run. Cheers!! Happy Running 2017!!
How do the rocks get in the clouds if they compress when you hit the ground?
+ best shoes if you have problems with knee, hip, back because they also absorb horizontal impact better than other systems.
price, vulnerable clouds
thank you for th review!Verry helpful!I was thinking to buy it for my work(restorant)but when you pointed the rocks/stones i changed my mind-the restorant’s yard is with small stones!Your review saved me 170eyro!
Ginger Runner you are right about the rocks other than that the Cloudflyer is the best shoe I have ever worn period
I own three pair of On shoes: the CloudRacer, CloudVenture and CloudFlyers. The CloudFlyer has been one of the more responsive shoes I have owned. I currently have 230 miles on them, and while they are showing some signs of wear, they have held up better than other shoes I have ran in. I have no issues with the laces. For that matter, the lacing system of the CloudFlyer gives the wearer some options as to how you would like to lace it over the tope of the foot. I lace my left shoe differently than my right. So far, with these shoes, I have not ran farther than 15 miles on any run with them, and have done the 10-15mi distance in them several times without issues. No hotspots, blisters, or foot discomfort. I’ve used these shoes over various road surfaces and have acquired an occasional rock stuck between the clouds, which is irritating. What I have learned is, as the shoes break in, this becomes less of an issue. I have yet to get anything stuck “in” the pods, only between them, and it has popped out in a quick second. I would recommend this shoe.
Love my Ons. I do my 45+ minute runs in the now obsolete Cloudster (my third and final pair). I do my 30 minute or less and speed work and races in the Cloudflow. I tried them after surgery on my big toe joint and wanted a stiffer shoe while I recovered. I am recovered and sticking with my Ons. I will move to the Cloudsurfer when my final pair of Cloudsters bite the dust. Rocks not a huge problem even though I have a 1/3 mile long gravel driveway. Not a fan of the skinny shoe laces but replace the skinny with the included normal laces if needed. An interesting thing happened with my first pair of Cloudsters. Blew through one of the clouds in the heel and was really annoyed since this happened within 150 miles but….I kept running in them. No problems, and I am a person who has had injury issues. Finally replaced them after about 300 miles. My next pair, the front clouds broke down first. Did I change my gait and stride? Or inconsistent quality? I don’t know, but I got about 300 miles out of them, just started my third pair. Cloudflow is super light and just a super cool, fun shoe. I am a 52 year old, 5’3″, 110 lb woman who runs competitively from the marathon, to the 5k to the 800m on the track. For me, they have worked great and I am going to stick with them until something changes. Great reviews, very helpful, I work in a specialty running store and your reviews, and others, help me with recommendations. Thanks!!
I thought they didn’t provide enough cushion for me running in the street but they are a extremely comfortable everyday sneaker. My biggest complain is the squeak like crazy if you wear them in wet weather…so annoying!
I keep watching this video, just love how they produced it! The person who made this video is a genius! The video is just awesome
Great channel! can you please do a review of top forefoot running shoes. Also if you can, minimalist vs maximalist midfoot shoes that will be great…
I got a pair of Cloudsurfers recently and blame them for my ankle injury. I am glad you pointed out the lack of clouds at the heel, I am very sure that fact (and in cmbination with the very stiff midsole called speedboard) required extra effort in the transition that caused the inflammation. I will be very careful with these in the future. Other than that, love the shoe. Very responsive, comfortable, and with premium feel to it. And wife loves hers too.
Bought a Cloudace worst shoe ever. Heavy and stiff. Gave it away, now back to Altra the Kayenta is a great shoe.
Your review said exactly what I would have expected. Good to hear it as a review, and not find out using my cash:)
Hey Ginger Runner please do review of Nike Lunarepic Flykint….! That’s would be appreciated
Should I buy it or not, I want to hear pros and cons of it…? I watched every single of your shoes reviews that’s helped..!
The Cloudrunner is my all time favorite road shoe. Due to injury I have a very bad stride but the ON shoes have helped me run much more efficiently (sort of reverse of your experience). I felt the Cloudflyer was the least ON like shoe out of the three I have. Runner, Surfer, Flyer
i was really excited about the cloud surfer, but really not happy now that I own one. The rocks getting stuck is a major dislike. And I happened to get a terrible shin splint running on them, which had NEVER happened before. Thought id put it out there, just for people to know:)
I was excited for these shoes (the Cloudsurfers) after hearing about them. Running with them has clarified my ideas. They are complete garbage shoes. Ill/narrow fit, pinching sides, skinny laces, and sliding tongue. hands down the worst pair of shoes I have ever owned. And in Canada they cost $190… A definite Do Not Buy.
How does this shoe compare to the Salomon speedcross? Have you ran with them in soft dirt or mud? If so, did mud or dirt get trapped in the flaps or pods under the shoes?
Bought my first On Cloud running shoes today and they are the lightest running shoes. I was skeptical at first but after running, I LOVE THEM!!!!! I think heir shoes have come along way since he made this video or unless the women’s shoes are lighter. Mine is the lightest I’ve ever own and I’m an avid runner. I went from Nike/Brooks/Asics to these!
I’m 6ft, 230 lbs and just lift heavy weights. I’ve gotten in to a lot of conditioning circuits as of late. I have had 3 pairs of Cloud Surfers and love them. More comfortable than the Hoka Clifton and the Asics Gel Kayano. If I won the lottery, I would have a massive closet only with ON brand shoes. Playing almost every sport growing up and owning about 250 pairs of athletic shoes, these are the best.
there’s a lot of you talking. great reviews but throw in some video shots of the shoes while you talk. just something to mix it up, thanks for the great content.
Ellen, I’ve bought a pair of the same shoes but my experience withe them could hardly be more different! For some time I was sure you were talking about a completely different shoe altogether! In my opinion it is a heavy shoe. It seems heavier than my Hoka Bondi, heavier than my Mizuno 22, heavier even than my Brooks Glycerine! Of these four pairs it also is the most uncomfortable. It feels like there is no softness whatsoever in these shoes, a bit like racers! The only surface on which my feet don’t hurt after running in them is on the athletics track.
I agree about the laces, they are thin and slippery, without a double knot they become undone for sure.
I own the On Cloud, the origianls ones. they are very light ( very light!) and minimalist ( like the Nike free ), and the clouds under the shoe are really well placed and bigger and more rigid then the Cloudster ( i have them to, but i dont like them because of the poor support on the heel, i mean if you are a heel striker or even a mid-foot striker you can’t run on them, they slow you, and are dangerous too i think ).
the Cloud are fantastic, very light, very responsive and the clouds under the shoes can actually adapt to your run and foot-strike very well. the negative part is that you can’t run more than 300/350km and you can’t run on trail, the rocks will get stuck. hope my review will help.
Ask and you will receive! I agree the rock vacuums can be frustrating but all around I enjoy On’s. I am interested in seeing how they change the clouds on the their upcoming trail shoes to not pick up rocks.
Are there any shoes that you said were a 18+/20? All of your reviews end up in the 12/17 range.
I’ve read some other reviews stating that they barely noticed the weight. What is your stance on that?
I love the design and I am looking for some new toys to run on concrete. But since I am usually a trailrunner and mostly barefoot or in minimal shoes, the heavy weight is such a turn off.
I had some pairs of original cloudsurfers. I did really enjoy the shoes but the one problem I had was the pods breaking after roughly 2 months so I stopped buying them. It has been many generations of the shoes so I’m curious if it has changed but don’t feel like spending $150 to find out.
Dude you must be running on a gravel road I’ve run 400 miles in my and not so much as a pebble in my shoes. Love the ON shoes
How do these shoes get the same score as the Brooks Neuro, which is one of the worst made shoes in the last 5 years?
Own and love a four year old On Cloud, a brand new On Cloud, and the brand brand new Moonlight On Cloud Edge. After 10 year career in specialty run, and liking many many shoes and companies, these are among my favorite in the neutral cush category. I like the look, fit, and feel. I don’t think the technology, while interesting and innovative, makes any sweeping changes to all things running. This is a good thing! This is one more brand that does it’s thing, gets out of your way, and supports you, but let’s you run! I like one pair of Clouds for no tie lace kick around/biznass. I will race in Moonlight On Cloud Edge as they are light and responsive and flats are a bit too minimalist for these 43 year old knees:( Try this Swiss brand.
Love the new intro and outro. Not a fan of this brand because of their “innovation” which I consider gimmicky.
I switched to the Cloudsurfers to take a break from my Clifton 2s. I didn’t find the shoes heavy at all and the toe box was spacious compared to the Hokas. I felt a spring in my step but it felt like that boost was diminished after a bit. Can the Clouds become less springy? Also, the Clouds provide some cushion but for 30K+runs you start to feel it in the knees and hips, at least for me. Yes, the things attract rocks like crazy and they are not easy to get out. I say they are great trainers and great shoes if you like to race 10Ks or even halfs, but I sprung for some size 14 Cliftons for my forthcoming marathon because I knew I would probably be wrecked post race due to lack of cushioning from the Clouds. Your experience may be different and I still see running in mine just to change things up. Oh yeah, in rain the Clouds feel somewhat slippery. Never felt like I would slip but the shoes’ grip did worry me. I look forward to what On comes up with next.
I had them and I associate the beginning of my achilles issues with them. Not sure if they were the cause but the issues started when I started wearing these shoes. And yes, the gravel and rock thing was a major problem especially since a lot of my runs are on dirt and gravel roads.
I’m not bothered about the ON shoes particularly all I want to see is a “Science Songs with Wraith” style gear review!!! Would be awesome!! It’s gotta be done!! 😉
ive now run about 200km in the Cloudflyer, and it is only now that I’m getting comfotable in them. at first i suffered from sore knees and lower back, i noticed that my foot shape has changed in the arch, it is now flatter because of the difference in arch support. i believe it is not a shoe to run long distances in. my version does have a little lace pocket and so the lacing i thought was good. i think i will try a more cushioned On shoe next.
The technology looks similar to Adidas springblade maybe even inferior to Adidas
Hi Ellen, I am about to buy a pair of On Cloud and I was wondering if the sizing was accurate? Did you buy your usual size? Thank you, stay safe xx
Are these shoes good for standing on your feet 10 hours a day?
Have you tried there new Venture Shoe, said to be quite a bit a lighter? True? False? Please let us know in a future review once they come out. The LA Marathon Expo had notice about this new shoe?
I looked at these but they don’t do a wide fitting at all. Are you running on Sunday at Cambridge?
I don’t undarstand people who buy shoe for road but they run off road and whine about rocks.
i just came across the ON shoe brand. these are amazing shoes!
I agree with you on disliking the Cloudsurfer, but the Cloudracer is actually really good. I’ve got Cloudracer reviews on my channel and it is actually the best shoe I’ve had. It’s light, the material is different to the Cloudsurfer, it’s really cool with the mesh too.
First of all congratulations on your weight lose, you should feel so proud:) and congrats also on your running achievements, impressive. I was debating about buying some oncloud surfers and after your review and a few others I will swerve them now, so thank you, you’ve helped a lot.
I own the flyer for about a year now. great shoe. the rock problem isn’t that big of an issue for running in the city.
love On shoes.feel like slippers. my complaint is the soles pick up every rock!!!!!!
Please get the hoka one one tracer! Plzzz… And what shoes do you think would be the best for an 800m track runner for training? We do anywhere from 100m, 200m, 300m, 400m intervals, and mile and two mile for long run days… I’ve heard that the tracer and the kinvara 7 are probably the best for this but you are such a good shoe reviewer and would love to get your opinion on it so i can make a great choice… Thanks
Something is wrong with the editing. Real jumpy, his head bounces and jerks a lot and his words are cut off.
haven´t tried them… but sounds like too many deal breakers for me!
Hello can anyone help me I’m a forefoot runner but I get a lot of blisters on the balls of my feet can not find any shoes to stop this I run in adidas supernova if I run slow I’m ok but when I run faster I get blisters I have spent a lot of money trying different shoes but no shoes help. Thanks wayne
Surprised that for shoes that seem so fastidiously designed, the tongue is too long. It pokes into my feet so I can’t wear them without socks
Hey man I got a question. Has there been 4 different Cloudsurfers released? Cause I have two different types of Cloudsurfers but I don’t recall there being 4 updates to the shoe? I thought it was just Cloudsurfer 1 and Cloudsurfer 2
Hope you will give the Vibram fivefingers some air time. Being running in bikila evo exclusively for more than a year and never looked back. They are awesome.
Hello Ellen. I have a question for you: How long did it took you from when you started training, to running a sub 2 hour half marathon? thanks:)
I got those yesterday and ran in them today. They feel great running on tarmac. Will see if they are good for trail running too.
I am so proud of ON, it was developed at the ETH in Zurich! Finally our time to shine!
Have 5 pairs of these, Gave me more mileage in my run because of it’s superior cushioning effect. Love it! Great work on team!
I think this should have been two reviews. Like most everyone, I also get stones trapped in my cloud shoes but it is of no consequence and no more that gets caught in other shoes I’ve had. I am very impressed actually with the cloud and cloud flyer how not only do they hold up just fine for a person my size 198 pounds/ 6’2′ tall, but both have given me plenty of cush and support in my rides over 20 miles. I would not have believed it 6 months ago but its true, both of these small lightweight shoes are amazing feets of shoe engineering.
The On Cloudsurfer is definitely my favorite road shoe. I had plenty of doubts before I purchased them, but they proved me wrong. I will definitely be purchasing another pair.
