Good alignment places minimal strain on your joints for efficient movement. To further complicate the matter, each style of yoga has its own thoughts on optimal alignment, its own techniques, and, sometimes (in Anusara, for example), its own descriptive language. Why is Yoga Alignment So Important?
Alignment is intended to create a stable foundation for a safe practice, to allow the body to open in new ways, and to reduce the risk of injury. While you might not feel a sudden, sharp pain from doing a pose. Why Alignment Really Matters: Energy and Ego in Yoga Words by Elle Daniel — B.K.S.
Iyengar, Light on Life As a yoga teacher, I encourage safe alignment in asana, because I know how, as a student, it is vital in the healing process of the body.Injury leads to inquiry Although I’ve always been interested in form (a.k.a. alignment or technique), not all styles of yoga prioritize alignment. When our bodies are younger, they tend to be more forgiving, so I got away with moving more freely with less awareness for a while. It is because necessary alignment in yoga poses is critical as it maximizes the benefits of the pose. It increases the strength & flexibility without causing any pain, discomfort or injury.
Naturally, different muscles and joints in the body are designed to operate under various workloads and. Here are just a few reasons why alignment matters: Your bones serve as attachment sites for your muscles (via tendons) and affect the function of those muscles. Muscles function best at a certain optimal length. When your body’s bones are mis-aligned, this may distort the length of the muscle interfering with its ability to “fire” efficiently.
With the right alignment for your body a yoga pose isn’t a struggle. But you can start to notice and feel what’s happening: which muscles are working, how a shift in alignment changes how the pose feels in different parts of your body, where there is openness or constriction, how your breath is moving.Alignment is important.
If you do trikonasana (triangle pose) without good alignment of your shin and thigh, you are likely to either hyperextend or apply an.Why Correct Alignment Matters in Yoga. 1) It Reduces Your Risk of Injury. Alignment has some universal principles that are geared towards injury prevention. Some of these principles are aimed at avoiding some common causes of yoga injuries.
Among them are locking joints and scrunching your shoulders to your ears during inversions. Proper yoga alignment also ensures that you build body.Relieves pain from unhealthy movement patterns: For many people that start practicing yoga and paying attention to alignment, they begin to undo years of holding their body in unhealthy ways. They remark how their neck pain starts to subside or their lower back pain decreases.
“Why does alignment matter?” First, let’s define alignment – The precise way in which the body should be positioned in each yoga pose in order to obtain the maximum benefit from the pose and avoid injury. An example: The proper alignment for cat-cow stretch is to have.We align the body first because once you have created the alignment in your body it is automatically mirrored in your mind. I always struggle with my shoulders, how should I lengthen me, but then have my shoulders down? I don’t get it and not sure how my shoulders have to be.
Thank you for leading my yoga practice. It feels wonderful. May I ask a technique question? (I will assume yes) I struggle when going from plank to down dog. I always need to scoot my feet closer. Am I struggling with technique or could this be an issue for tall people?
Thank you for sharing in this beautiful way your knowledge
I just want to express my infinite gratitude for this video and some othersI am 53 years old, practicing ashtanga yoga, for 8 years. Last year I put on weight (around 6 kilos) and started to have a lots of pain on my lower back, hips and ankle. Also a lots of cracking on my right hip and sometimes sciatic pain. About 3 weeks ago, I started to see your videos about chronic pain, and to practice some of the very easy exercises. Now, the pain is almost totally gone! the cracking is much less. And in general I feel much better. My daily practice has improved, and I started to lose weight and feel happier. ( Having so much pain in my body was changing my mood since I could not sleep). So again, thank so much for all this videos. All best! Miguidet
You talk like a quantum mechanical scientist or construction theory professor. You make sense. But Newtonian people would not understand that.
“Now this possibility, of a simple thing called yoga is not about twisting your body, it’s not about getting fit, it’s not about getting healthy, this all these things nature will do for you if only if you live in tune with it.” 0:00 3:57
this was great. thank you.
i want to learn yoga where can i do this.
Thank you so much Sadhguru for providing us this nectar of knowledge….I feel so much blessed….I wish u all good health and happiness….
I love the metaphore of the antenna:-) Thank you so much Sadhguru for sharing your wisdom! My next holiday in a few weeks will be devoted to the online inner engineering program so I can learn how to align my own ‘antenna’
Calling a video 5 yoga poses to remove belly fat really turned me your videos.
Clickbaity and silly.
yes The esrth is immovableAnd the sun of god is a revolving around the earth
What he says is right. It’s just that it may take many lifetimes
Looks like I will have to show killshot. The previous one was a warning. Which part of the world should I use?
When I was in Pune by the river in the evening there was this super supple yogi. could bend his body into amazing shapes..but I got closer one evening to really look. his eyes were shallow!no light and depths
Aum nama sivaya.Sadhgurave Namaha.Bharat Mata ki jai. Thanks for this great son of Bharat.Namaskaram.
Another great practice! I had to do this one with wireless headphones and found myself much more engaged to the cues and able to relax than when I try to watch the Tv. Have you ever thought about yoga practice podcasts? You’d need to be more experienced to get value from them but might be interesting to see if you get any traction from posting just the audio files.
The second cue is not clear to me maam…will u plzz mention and also demonstrate the way to do
Love love love! You are awesome this was perfect! I have been practicing Yoga for about 6 months now, after 15 years of martial arts bjj and muaythai my wife forced me in to retirement lol I was going nuts because I lost my favorite activity for health therapy etc. Obviously extra weight and all the damage I have done to my body were almost more than I could bare. And then I found Yoga ❤ Your 30 day total body yoga was my foundation. I am always looking for Yoga that works for me and without fail you are my go to. I just want you to know how much I appreciate you. I look forward to the next workout!!!
It was nice to see your personality Tim. You’re typically so professional and on task.
I LOVE your cues Brett. It has really enhanced my practice.
It’s like you need to be a PT to teach yoga. We learned all of these cues in YTT!
I use most of these cues, guilty! Brett your content geared towards yoga teachers and aspiring teachers in general is very much so appreciated. Thank you for sharing your wisdom.

Good tips. I’ve heard all of these, also “hinge at the hips.”
I’ve heard lift your knee caps for mountain pose, what does that mean? And, how do you safely achieve it? When I hear and try it, it makes me feel like I’m locking my knees, which a horrible thing for your body, and I already have knee problems.
Thank you, it s difficult sometimes to know what to do when so may teachers/centers have so many different point of view. these videos are very useful!
I love youtube for helping share these little snippets of knowledge! very helpful:)
Doesn’t drawing the shoulders down the back help with keeping the chest open?
Very helpful. Yes I heard the swan dive a thousand times so thank you for the correct adjustment
I do find it unhelpful being told to look towards my thumb in side angle as my neck just feels all out of alignment and likes it’s crunching my cervical spine I think looking forward or under the armpit is more accessible. Great video
Thank you Tim. I really enjoyed this one as well as tons of your others. Much appreciated!!!
Engage your abs, engage…whatever. So lame cue. How do you engage muscles? You need to say what to move and in what direction .
This was a challenging but thoroughly fulfilling video for me! (beginner level) Namaste, Tim!
Really good video! I’ve been slowly working my way through the 30 day challenge (and repeating it), but this came up in my feed, and it was exactly what I needed…humor and everything.
Did this one again after a few months. It’s one of your best. This is a great yoga routine with exemplary commentary. Thanks!
Tim, great job again. I like your channel so well. Namaste from Northern Germany
So awesome yoga session today. Love your details explaination and clear instruction. Thank you so much Tim
Dude, you and your dog crack me up so much! Love your humour
I loved your infomercial! It made me smile. I also like the workout. Thanks
I really loved the comment about how if you stretch too hard, the body will start to fight back and actually get tighter! That’s some really useful insight I’m going to use in the future.
Love your videos! Would love to see a video or two appropriate for teens who are new to yoga.
I an a newbie to yoga ( definitely not teaching) and I understood NOTHING I have such a long way to go
Tim, once again you’ve got me showing up to my mat, somewhat reluctantly before 6 Am, appreciating this practice with your unique style of teaching that regularly includes humility, grace, and laughter! Thank you! I am inspired.
The title to the video should include ‘laughter yoga’, Tim! You’re so funny in this video.:)
Thanks for this video. I hadn’t done Tree pose for a while and it made me feel tall and strong. Thought the little variation before Bow pose was very challenging, I’ll have to practice that in the future. Olli (sorry if it’s not written correctly) is still the most adorable puppy dog! But why can’t I see him in dog pose?:-D
Love your humor! Also appreciate you show us how to position our bodies for a pose! Would love to see a hip opener practice! Thank you!
I’ve always had a bit of trouble staying in half moon, but you gave a tip saying, imagine you have a weight on your back extended heal. After hearing that and applying it, I was able to hold steady in the pose for a longer period of time. Thank you ☺️. Oh, and honestly I think you have a future in sales. Keep up the humor, it’s much appreciated ✌️
like the use of the blocks to bring my foot by my hand from down dog…great routine once again!! thanks tim oh and Tazz my fluffy black poodle was by my side during the routine:)
Almost after 4 months, i did yoga with Tim again and he teaches best yoga routines ever. It relaxed me so much and my body feels much better. Thank you so much, Tim, i will always keep coming back to you for yoga!:)
my god i needed to hear this cause i’ve been doing two of these..Lower the shoulders and tuck the tail..Wich lead to huge pain in my back(between the shoulderblades) And pain with walking cause of the tucking my tailbone..Thanks for this!!
Thankyou Tim and yes I also have the benefit of a sleeping dog at the end of my mat to help improve my practice. Namaste ❤️
I laughed so much during this video, I love it! The videos where your personality shines through are awesome!
It was also challenging in a good way, as I’ve stopped doing yoga for several months now. I love it when we get the time to really focus on our muscles and feeling our core stabilise and work. Awesome video, thank you Tim!
I so enjoy your videos Tim. Truly the best for getting the poses right without injuring the body. You’re awesome!
My fav so far of all your vids… more fluffy animals please 😉
Tim, I thoroughly enjoy your channel and videos. Even more I love your dog! He is adorable and so sweet! Thanks for all you do and for sharing your yoga practice!
I love how your videos are always the perfect balance of strength, balance, and meditation:) Keep doing what you’re doing!
Thanks Tim that was a lovely way to finish the working day I only had a smooth hair dog but it seemed to work well especially in the knees to chest he definitely was also in the way. Lol Namaste
Thank you this was perfect for me today, I rarely have more than 30-40 min during the week and this was my morning workout. Good Core work and easy on sore muscles from strength training and cardio. I got a little sweaty too; a bonus:) I do yoga with Floki my huge ginger cat.
Best explanation I ever heard for using the core, rather than the arms, coming up from chaturunga. Namaste.
omg hahahaha the block infomercial has me laughing so hard during this
I come for the yoga, I stay for the jokes and block infomercials…
i was so deep in my savasana that when my cat stepped on my stomach, my whole body jumped! loved this practice. very complementary to what we learned in the 30 day challenge. the final standing balance pose? awesome. on my left side, i was able to float both arms behind me! superrrrrcool
Hey Tim, another great video love it!!! Thanks a lot, please more of this. I really appreciate your cues to work with the blocks and other props.
Is it still OK to do this with a short hair dog or does it need to be fluffy?
I have a Great Dane and a Yorkie AND two cats that ALWAYS love to join me on my mat and sleep exactly in the middle or ON me:) loved your mood today and commentaries, you keep yoga real and light at the the same time
Love your videos, Tim! My cat, Tater, enjoyed today’s practice as well! She is not quite as considerate as Ollie and likes to settle in for a nap under me while I’m holding in plank.:-D
When forward folding, I’ve heard a lot of teachers say to fold from the hips, not the lumbar spine, & encourage students to therefor bend the knees to help keep the back straight. Is this ok? Also I do hear a lot of instructors saying to draw the shoulders down the spine, & I get a bit confused on my form during downward dog. Now, I’ve heard instructors say to ‘draw the shoulders down’ & ‘create space between the neck’. But then I’ve heard other instructors say to ‘lift out of the shoulders’. This is what I find confusing. What is the proper form? & what’s the difference? I often times find myself relaxing my shoulder blades down my back, therefor creating space around my neck & creating more of a heart opener in my chest during downward dog. This shape is how my body naturally wants to go in downward dog. Is this correct posture or am I doing it wrong? I already suffer from pain in my left shoulder due to nerve damage in my cervical vertebrae. This in turn causes pins & needles sensations in the fingers of both hands, as well as loss of strength in my hands, & pain in my neck & shoulder. So some yoga stretches exacerbate this sensation. & I want to take care that I’m doing what I can to help alleviate this pain & discomfort & not intensify it or make it worse.
So happy to have found you Pete! This is the icing on the cake for my chiro/cranio/divineclearing work! ♀️♀️♀️
I now understand why you say float instead of jump to the top of the mat, but do you have any pointers on how to best do that? Loved this flow today and Ollie is my favorite YouTube dog! ❤️
TIM! I love the blocks too! Can I order another set and does that include free shipping???? LOL Great session, keep the jokes coming.
Great video again!! Last time I suggested to leave a bit more time for the “do the vinyasa” team and I felt like we had more time so thanks for taking into consideration our points. Namasté!
Tim, thank you for creating this video, you make it easy and fun to follow the yoga moves. Love that your dog is in this video as mine is usually right alongside me on the mat as well:) I’m also enjoying your 30-day challenge, it’s helped me learn and do the various yoga poses. Thank you! Namaste
how its possible for a normal human being to understand the whole geometry, trignometry science. how can?? means where to start?
Fantastic flow for my morning today. I feel loosened up and ready to get after it now. Please keep up the comedic tangents. They are amazingly entertaining.
Just found you!! I love this flow! Perfect balance of what my body craves!!! Thank you and look forward to following your channel!!
Another Great practice to add to the collection❤️
This one hit all my favorites—good warm up, a flow, favorite poses, abs and final stretches!!
Keep them coming Tim and Ollie
Great practice! It’s good to really get into the poses and just hold them. Thanks Tim xx
Thank you Tim! Wishing and hoping and gearing positive energy towards finding courses by you on Omstars on day pleasssse consider it
Spot on cueing. As your moniker: conscious movement. Thank you
You mention this is a 40 minute version of your complete yoga workout series, can this only be found by subscribing to your conscious movement community?
Tim, love all of your videos, but this one was really special. The length, the sequences and the skill level matched my ability perfectly. Thank you again for all you do, those of us that follow you really do appreciate it.
This was the best ever. All the soreness from yesterday’s workout is gone!
Beautiful sequence of poses….
And then there is the dog for some extra peacefulness ♂️
Most enjoyble class, so much fun! and perfect for my level. The dog…
Great session! Thanks Tim, now I have to go shovel a foot of snow. Perhaps you can do a video to help with that?
Oh my word! I was laughing out loud during this one. You are a hoot! Thanks for your humor and your videos.:) Have a blessed Sunday!!!
I have been stubbornly refusing to use blocks. I disdain my wife’s. After today’s video I am reconsidering my position on them. If I could easily place my foot between my hands they would be worth it.
Excellent class! Invigorating, relaxing, awesomeness! Good humor also!
Nice flow, thank you very much, Tim.
By the way, my dog does exactly the same thing, it’s like there’s no other place in the world than my mat when I’m practicing:)
Namaste from Spain.
I do not have a dog but 2 beautiful daughters that joined me 14 & 12.
