The answer is that trans fats are digested and absorbed like all other fats. Basically, the fats you eat are broken down in the small intestine, then the individual fatty acids (trans, saturated, polyunsaturated, and monounsaturated) are absorbed across the walls of the small intestine. 1 .
Like saturated or animal fats, trans fats contribute to clogged arteries. Clogged arteries are a sign of heart disease; they increase your risk of both heart attack and stroke.Trans fats raise your bad (LDL) cholesterol levels and lower your good (HDL) cholesterol levels.
Eating trans fats increases your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. It’s also associated with a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes.Trans fats may act as a pro-oxidant, contributing to oxidative stress that causes cellular damage Vegetable oils oxidize when heated, and when oxidized cholesterol and trans fat enter into your LDL particles, they become destructive, contributing to arterial plaque buildup in your brain.
But consuming trans fats and large amounts of saturated fats, especially in place of unsaturated fats, have been shown to do the opposite: up your LDL and depress your HDL, effects that are linked.Trans fat is a type of dietary fat. Of all the fats, trans fat is the worst for your health. Too much trans fat in your diet increases your risk for heart disease and other health problems.
Trans fats are made when food makers turn liquid oils into solid fats, like shortening or margarine.Unlike other dietary fats, trans fat — also called trans-fatty acids — raises your “bad” cholesterol and also lowers your “good” cholesterol. A diet laden with trans fat increases your risk of heart disease, the leading killer of adults. The more trans fat you eat, the greater your risk of heart and blood vessel disease.
Trans fats make you fatter than other foods with the same number of calories but that’s not all. Researchers at Wake Forest University find that trans fats increase the amount of fat.Trans fat isthe worst kind of fat to include in your diet. It raises your “bad” LDL cholesterol level, leading to buildup on the walls of arteries.
Narrow and hardened arteries increase your risk.Small amounts of trans-fats are also found in meat and dairy products. And often foods that say they are “trans-fat free” in fact contain trans-fats.
One place you won’t find them is in New.It takes about 40 hours for fats to be digested in your body, though digestion time varies between men and women. It’s also based on the type of fats you’ve consumed. We go over the fat.
Trans fat is not a good fat and can affect our health in numerous ways. It affects cholesterol levels by increasing bad cholesterol and decreasing good cholesterol. It can clog the arteries and cause heart attacks ora paralytic stroke. Type 2 diabetes is another result of excessive trans fat in our diet.
Trans fat, also called trans-unsaturated fatty acids or trans fatty acids, is a type of unsaturated fat that occurs in small amounts in meat and milk fat. It became widely produced as an unintentional byproduct in the industrial processing of vegetable and fish oils in the early 20th century for use in margarine and later also in snack food, packaged baked goods, and for frying fast food.Saturated and trans fat can raise low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (known as the “bad cholesterol”) levels in the blood.
High total cholesterol or a high LDL cholesterol level is a leading risk factor for heart disease. For decades, eating a low-fat diet was the recommended way to lose weight and improve heart health, according to the National Institutes of Health. The idea was to reduce saturated fats, not eliminate fat from the diet altogether.
Eating no fat can negatively affect your health.

….2019 people still binging on chips, pastries and sweet dairy products that are Trans Fat free. So yeah…you guys hardly accomplished anything
Coconut oil. I use it for everything from cooking to make up remover, to skin and hair moisturizer, to scar fader. I think I would die without it!
I don’t see the need to extend the life of chips in my opinion.
Companies are replacing with Palm Oil, but that’s causing the destruction of forests in Indonesia and other locations.
Uhmm, how come boeing sponsor a video about Unsaturated fat?
A while back, I researched fatty acids. What I found was they really should be called acid-y fats.
Say goodbye Brookeeee, you will be on the tills in Walmart!!
I have one doubt.Provided hydrogenation can also take place inside the body, then what if unsaturated fats get hydrogenated to saturated fats? Wouldnt it lead to more “bad fats getting stored ” in our tummy? Please explain
is trans fats are a type of unsaturated fat, then could food labels label trans fats as unsaturated
I enjoyed this vid. It gave a nice overview and explanation. Nice job
Thank u so much that is so eloquently simplified and straightforward
Nice informative video but I have a question. If saturated fat is dangerous anyhow, why does it increase both the good and bad Cholestrol? and if LDL is a bad cholestrol, why HDL, the good one is also increasing as a result of the consumption of the same saturated fats? Do you think LDL is the main culprit or the carbohydrates that cause inflammation in the body and LDL which gets oxidized while fighting the inflammation caused by carb intake?
Eh what SUCKS in English speaking countries is that the word for lipids is also known as ‘fats’ and the verb to become overweight is also known as ‘fat’ so the link between the two was inevitably and not always correct. Some fats can be good for you, and eating fats doesn’t necessarily make you FAT. I bet in tonnes of other languages the word for fat and lipids are two very different things.
I prefer organic peanut oil because it is affordable and lot healthier than palm or rice bran…
How they get them out of meat? Why they ignore the content overwhelmingly in meat products n cheese?
I blame this issue on two scientists of Paul Sabatier and Wilhelm Normann for making the early patents of partially hydrogenated oils. Here is good question for the 17 or 18 century. Why didn’t somebody stop the Procter & Gamble from making a really dangerous food oil?
Awesome video. It doesn’t just tell you what is good and what is bad for you, like many do, it also explains why.
LDL is not bad for you and HDL isn’t good for you. Both are neither good or bad, but are needed at a ratio.
I hate how trans fat gets demonized. They’re just saturated fat that used to be unsaturated.
Okay, but WHAT ARE trans-fats? You didn’t answer the question. You just explained the difference between saturated and unsaturated, and what hydrogenated is, and then said that trans-fats are bad. So the question remains, what are trans-fats and why are they bad?
High fructose corn syrup is another artificial food poison that should be removed. Not to be confused with old fashioned regular corn syrup.
We need to stop misgendering fat trans people and use the appropriate pronouns
It seems like you’re saying that for hydrogenated oils, they just move the hydrogen atom to another position on the carbon atom. I don’t see how that helps to “fill up more of the empty parking spaces.” Isn’t that just moving a hydrogen from one “parking space” to another?
This is probably one of DNews’ most informative and useful videos thus far.
Well KFC took transfat out now their chicken taste like shit.transfat tastes good and you’re going to die anyway so what the hell
Just another byproduct of capitalism. None of this shitty food would exist under socialism. God, I miss the USSR.
About damn time the FDA did something. Now we just need to require all food to be identified as GMO or not.
Call it what it is…Hydrogenated oils and partially hydrogenated oil! Plus why the long wait before it’s removed?!?! If other products killed and injured as many people, it would be removed/ recalled immediately vs giving them 3more years to sell their cancer.
Yet flu shots contain a vaccine preservative made with 50% mercury a deadly neurotoxin.
Do you think they care about your health? That’s crazy. They have a reason for this and it has nothing to do with your health.
Wait can’t Omega-6’s be turned into Omega-3’s? by the body at a low efficiency?
I hear not smoking cigarettes reduces the likelihood of getting one cancer. You gonna ban those too? How about you let people eat and drink what they want I’m fine if states want to be in a white New York good for them I don’t shove that down Alabama’s throat if they don’t want to. I choose not to eat transferred so I don’t want to make it illegal for other people because I don’t use the gun of the government to make people live their life like I choose to. But also don’t want to pay for the healthcare of people to eat cinnamon rolls every day don’t exercise. Freedom has consequences both good and bad it’s OK for people to make irresponsible decisions have negative consequences the government doesn’t have to clean up their personal messes. I do think so companies need to not say 0 g a transfer and have transferred in the ingredients because it’s under half a gram per serving that’s very misleading…
Very nice, thank you. Although that would make a video a bit longer, I suggest after each idea expressed you give several seconds for the viewer to digest te information, before moving to the next idea/passage
All vegetable oils are partially hydrogenated oils, including the ones touted as healthy. If you want to avoid this, go for butter, ghee or lard.
WOW! This was very informative and I really understood it. What I never understood before I now understand.! Thank you so much!
Whey & Milk have Cholesterol and Coffee Mate doesn’t have Cholesterol making it safer than Dairy. The Coffee Mate and Dairy both have 00.5g Saturated fat per serving which is far from the 1oz. Danger Dose of Saturated fat then 00.0 Trans Fat and 00.0 Cholesterol for Nestle Coffee Mate?
I can’t find a study that shows that unsaturated fat raises hdl-c.
Science is not settled regarding unsaturated good saturated bad ect yet
Excellent video…simple explanation….very very effective…
What does it matter getting rid of only trans fat? Grain oil, falsely called “vegetable” oil is artificial toxic non-human food also.
Wow, this was the best and most informative video that I ever seen. Thank you so much!! Please make more videos like these!!
I like the fats in nuts and peanuts. Yes, those things have fats, thats why they are a great energy source if you are hiking etc
Really glad you mentioned that saturated fats are not bad for you. I was ready to get angry if you demonized them.
They knew this from the beginning…. it has been about the $$$
These people need to stop calling cholesterol good and bad and educate people properly
“The oiling of america” by sally fallon morell will complement this video. The weston a price foundation has plenty of resources like articles about fats if you are a student looking for info
Nice animation, although We have to get over the “good and bad cholesterol” and focus more on causes of inflation and small ldl particles
how do I know this isn’t fake news like their obviously biased political coverage
One of the best explanations of fat. I would had put a bit more time to explain Omegas fats but you might do that on a separate video
You failed to mention naturally-occuring trans fats e.g. CLA which many studies show to have some health benefits.
Why exactly are trans fats bad and saturated fats neutral if they both have the same makeup? I don’t see why it would be unhealthy just because it was modified
The people who thought margarine was healthier than butter are ignorant.
Only eat full fat produce.do not eat anything that says reduced fat, it has added sugar and its that that will kill you in the end.trust me..full fat milk. butter, yogurt, cheese, etc etc is good for you, take note in 6 months time when the stock market drops CNN will report they was wrong and now its ok to eat margarine. skimmed milk, etc etc…
yay!! wanted these kind of videos..now I found it! Thanks
The food industry is entitled to lineif there is.5 grams of trans fat in a product they are entitled to label that as “zero grams”? I remember from math class, that 05 that’s what lawyers are for. Why is this not in the video?
People freak out about eating 1 nanogram of trans fat… then smoke pot and drown in alcohol.
still thinking of trace’s hairy shoulders whenever i see him
False Ancel keys hypothesis of lipid which said unsaturated fat cause blood cholesterol to rise up..
3:10 Wait what?? Trans-fat is an unsaturated fat?? I though it is one of those saturated fats…
I recently found out that lard is mostly unsaturated fats both mono and poly. I think I’ll try making one batch of fries with lard and another with peanut oil to see which one tastes better. they’re alright anyway
Oh my God, Trump is such a socialist. What is next, taxing soda or banning incandescent light bulbs?
what are cnn’s lies???? the list is long, just do your own dam search.
Was expecting a simple explanation in layman’s term for scientifically challenged like myself. Didn’t like anything. I only saw stick figure in dance pose!
This was horribly oversimplified and misleading… Most popular chips don’t use hydrogenated oils, while most popular peanut butters actually do. This video has it backwards.
I learned more in this 5 minutes than in any of my science classes! LOL jk but great explanation!!
Now, I understood what is fat thank you for sharing this helpful video
Myo clinic, YOU ARE A FRAUD SELLING STATIN, WH? and the above was just beating the drums on choelestrol agan, you well know that 50 percent of heart attacks victims have normal cholestrol so, so what happened to cholestrol a theory?, real cause is sugar and transfat, that was lightly treated insted of calling it the poison that it is,, they just want to sell statin which is a dangerous drug and no study shows it extend life by any more than one day yes one day and tons of side effect and premature death and guranteed alzheimers etc.
People still drink bubble tea, which is sweetened with sugar and creamer. Latte or milk boba perhaps a better choice.
Yes trans fats are bad. No LDL cholesterol is not bad. No apples and carots aren’t a healthier option since they do not provide healty fats. Gras fed / free ranged animal foods do.
Trans fats stiffen the cell membranes leading to cancer. LDL simply does its job trying to heal. When LDL is composed out of plant derived unsaturated fats or trans fats it will oxidize quickly in the blood. not so with saturated animal fats. so called vegetable oils lead to cancer and heart disease. Long term statistics clearly show a correlation of plant fat / vegetable oil consumption and cancer and heart disease
The phrase “extends the shelf life” of a food means that it won’t spoil and that is because even bacteria and fungi don’t want to eat it. If it doesn’t spoil naturally then a food is not good for human consumption.
Peanut butter in hydrogenated oils. Come on people do better
HDL and LDL aren’t even cholesterol♂️ and there is no bad or good cholesterol. and shes only half right about trans fats, artificial trans fats are truly bad but…. naturally occurring trans fats are good for you health.
Hey!!! Don’t identify the fat you don’t know if it really feels like a Saturated fat instesd
Oh dear. There are some problems here. First off, trans fats are not inherently artificial. There are naturally occurring trans fats in, for instance, any meat you consume. As such, the FDA hasn’t required that anybody remove them from anything, because…well, you can’t remove them from some entirely natural foods. What the FDA can do is suggest that food producers avoid adding additional extraneous trans fats to foodstuffs.
I suspect the problem is that you’re trying to do too much with one video. If you had confined yourselves only to only answering the question you actually posed at the outset (What Are Trans Fats?) instead of also trying to cover the FDA statement. Of course, you’ve also gone and forgotten to cover, you know, the other question you pose in the title (you explain how consumption of trans fats correlates with some unhealthy effects, but not why those effects occur), so that might be another thing to consider. Really, it seems like there are two potential science stories here (What Are They and Why Are They Bad) that you’ve crammed together into one with the additional dressing of a related FDA announcement and you’re just not able to give all of the parts the time required to deliver full useful information.
The tip in the end is useless because trans fat is in ranch and peanut butter.
Isn’t CLA a trans-fat? Isn’t CLA good for you in the correct amount? Will CLA be exempt or will companies be required to remove CLA from butter? Won’t that increase costs? Why is the government hell bent on forcing people to consume their diets? They’ve never made a good diet policy, remember the ’90 food pyramid? Thanks government for giving 10,000,000 kids diabetes, you’re doing good in the world. Now we have a banning of fat in schools?! My kid will not eat that processed poison, its not food.
Labeling is great. Mandate labeling and transparency. Oh but the government isn’t in favor of transparency (or rather the lobbiests with their hands in the pockets of big government jerking them off while the US population tries to ignore it uncomfortably.) Can’t be honest, but we can force feed you poison while telling you its good for you and trying to tell you its against the law to not eat it… and then wonder why there is a decrease in trust in our government. WTF government.
Going to clear some air:
Trace gives the impression that oils are fully unsaturated fats and animal fat is fully saturated fat. In fact all oils and greases found in your diet are composed of a complex mixture of both saturated and unsaturated fats (that have differences within their categories, dividing into these two groups isn’t good enough). Vegetable oils happen to contain a lot more unsaturated fats than saturated fats, this is why they are liquid in room temperature. This is also why all vegetable oils are not made equal, but some have a better concentration of unsaturated fats and necessary fatty acids like omega-3’s.
ONE can of CocaCola contains 16 spoons of sugar, which your body will turn in to a Fat and store on your belly or butt.
This video could do without the science and just show us the food we should avoid.
As of last month the most popular preservative (which was mostly trans fats) was banned, woo hoo!
Talking about good health and clinic name is mayo it’s paradox!
Mono-unsaturated fats are good but they are not perfect. Any fat with the unsaturated designation had at least one double bonded carbon. In a MONO-unsaturated fat it had one double bond. These bonds are weak and prone to oxygen attaching to them (especially if you cook with them). And oxygen in a fat is bad. This is oxidation, otherwise known as rancidity. That is why even olive oil can go bad. Saturated fats like butter have no double bonds and will not get rancid. Which is why your grandparents did not put the butter in the fridge.
this thing apparently was hard to explain in many other videos. the best explanation of it. u made it simple. thank you.
I was eating haggndaz earlier and saw the label had.5g transfat per serving, said WTF because that’s supposed to be banned.
Jesus make things more complicated that what it is why dont ya
Blah blah blah, for fucking talk, do not twist thevertish twist turns it wants to tangle, in fact everything is simple your body will not be able to regenerate cells It’s Very Bad, old age is rank and diseases like cancer, etc..
How about if you don’t want to eat them then don’t eat them but why does the government have to ban them? That’s find the same people who want Jose to be legalized likes the government banning soda pop and cinnamon rolls
Watched many videos on fats, finally this one made it all clear in one go. Thank you for simplicity.
One of the best videos out there on fats. It made things clearer to me now. Thanks alot
Olive oil and salmon fish best source of fat. Proses food will kill you
For me this video really explained fats well and I would use this to help teaching foods students about fats because visuals are sometimes easier than lecture.
Nice visual explanation of the different fats. Easy to understand. My one complaint is the statement that saturated fat increases LDL, which is bad. Recent studies show that saturated fat increases larger LDL, which is not associated with heart disease or mortality. It does not raise the dense VLDL, which is associated with heart disease.
The trans name is due to the molecular structure, not what this guy said.
Curious to know, if we can see these structure under electron microscope or these are just concepts?
So trans fat is just saturated fat. The fat that’s naturally on meat..
So basically what I learn.
We have 3 types of fat: Saturated, Unsaturated(mono/poly) and trans-fat. The last one is dangerous cause the body can’t break it down.
I am good fat… that is what all my gf’s has told me at least
Trans fats are gonna be sold on the black market, and the government is going to wage an unwinnable war against it, and in actuality it was a war that was never supposed to be won because trans fats are more valuable being illegal to the government. the end

in poland,we don’t even have trans fat labeled, and they sell transfat butter for people with hearts, advetisements say it’s good because it’s vegetable oil, this is some kind of joke.
Basically they’re trying to make plant fat into animal fat and your body doesn’t know what the fuck to do with it
If the U.S. gov’t bans it it must be good for ur health; they won’t ban GMO foods, why? Because it’s making u sick and that’s what they want.
My favorite fats are bacon fat and butter, but of course you said “healthy fats” so I’ve got nothing to answer for that.
I fuckin love Almonds, even if they aren’t technically “nuts”.
That makes NO DIFFERENCE, it’s all junk food and Americans eat so much then they complain about there own weight. That’s the society u live in because I’m not in the u.s yet.
trans-fat-phobia”
Well murica needed a scapegoat for their predicament, yet they refused to look at themselves and pinpoint the real reason for the civic ailment
Recently I saw a margarine product that said “0g Trans Fat” but also had hydrogenated oils listed in the ingredients. How can they legally do that? Or am I missing something?
Betty Crocker is still using PHOs in their cookie mixes. The nutrition label deceptively says zero trans fats because they are using less than 0.5 grams per serving. They are putting profits ahead of our health!
The information is correct. But you should have added why the food producer use trans fats instead of natural occurring fats for shelf life stability.
Originally the food produced back in the 1950’s did not know that the human body can’t breakdown trans fats and would be a major cause of heart disease, type 2 Diabetes, Obesity etc.
They do know now of course and should take responsibility for consumers health
im a teacher and i was looking for a good summary of the topic of fat to my high school class. this is hands down the best and clearest video on the topic. I am inspired as a teacher. Well Done
Wow the FDA banned transfats which means some manufacturers are thinking of ways to sneak it in anyway. Lets Stay educated.
Thanks for sharing information about all types fate (good or bad ).
dairy contains quite a bit of naturally occurring trans-fat.
On page 23 there is a fantastic nutrition trick that will tell your body that you’re not starving and keep your metabolic rate sky high so you burn fat all the time most quote on quote diets end up leaving your body to believe that it’s starving and that’s why your body holds on to that stubborn fat it’s the last to go for a good reason it thinks you’re starving. There’s a way to trick it. Now this is going to shock you yeah there’s a type of actual saturated fat yeah you know the kind the media tells you is all bad no this saturated fat is healthy and even supports fat burning metabolism.
Don’t even have to watch the video to tell you what trans-fats are. They’re little fu*king grimlins that sneak into your closet every night and sew your clothes a little tighter!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just bought a beautiful slab of blue cheese and then I found out it contains a lot of trans-fats,
I guess eating once won’t do any harm:D
OMG! This video made everything so clear! I’m not really good at chemistry but I understood everything including the theories so perfectly!!!
Thank you so much for making this video!!!
Very good explanation! However a few have a question of the saem type. Why does unsaturated fats decrease LDL levels adn increase HDL levels? Why does saturated fats increase both LDL and HDL? Why does transfer increase LDL levels and decreases HDL levels?
I love +DNews but this video is partially wrong. It’s true that hydrogenated fats (read margarine) are the devil because they contain Trans fats. The problem is, cow’s milk and meat contain about 5% Trans fats too. But the meat industry is bypassing the FDA due to the fact that this ones are “naturally occurring” Trans fats, while the ones in margarine are industrially produced. It’s quite the same case with nitrosamides (forbidden toxin) naturally found in cigarettes and hotdogs […]
Kid showing this to their parents: see? There are good fats! Lets go to KFC now!
This was made to make Trans Fats good. When its far far from it.
