This Is What Happens To Your Body At High Altitudes
Video taken from the channel: Seeker
Training to Walk Hills at High Altitude 1. Improve your posture. The first step is to train with the basics — working on good walking posture and walking form 2. Work on your breathing. Practice taking deep, full breaths. If you don’t live at altitude, you may have been getting 3. Add hills.Although it may be hard to increase the altitude of your training treks (especially if you are training in Great Britain), you should increase the distance and time you walk as you train. Start off slow and build up to walking around an hour less than you will be expected on the longest walking day of your trip.
The most important step you need to take when facing a high altitude challenge is to ascend gradually. For multi-day hikes it’s good to get up to some higher areas during the day and then sleep lower at night, gradually increasing the altitude day by day. Do not sleep more than 1,600 feet higher than the previous night. While they train for hills, training for altitude is a different story, and it can completely change your race experience. And even when you are not at altitude, your lungs need to be trained just like your legs and arms.
Well, technically it is your inspiratory and expiratory muscles that must be trained, but we will get. When it comes to hiking at higher altitudes, where there’s less oxygen and very little moisture in the air, all of this preparation becomes even more important. You could be scaling a small face at 9000 feet or summiting Long Peak in Colorado at 14,000 feet; either way, you’ll need to.Step-ups: Before a backpacking trip, weight your pack (use 20 lbs. to start) and step up onto a park bench 16 to 18 inches high.
Add 5 pounds a week until your pack is as heavy as it will be on your hike. To prepare for an extended, multi-day hike, do this exercise three times a week until you can do 700 steps in less than 30 minutes.Altitude training is a component of virtually all elite running programs95 percent of all medalists at the world championships and the Olympic Games since 1968 have either lived or trained at.1. CARDIOVASCULAR TRAINING. Cardio training is the most important part of your hiking training.
According to Backpacking.com, you should do two days of cardio for every day of strength training. Three to four days a week is recommended.Running rugged trails and steep streets. The best way to train for a hike is to, well, hike. But often, this requires more time than a simple workout.
So instead, try focusing on trail running and uphill jogging. Building your cardio is especially beneficial if you’re planning to tackle a high-altitude hike. This is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to training to hike at high altitude.
Once your fitness plan is underway, start preparing for all the external issues, like route-finding, that.Prepare your body for the rigors of higher altitudes. You don’t have to head the gym and become a gym bunny, just make your walks longer and increasingly challenging. Start by adding a few miles each time you head for the hills, increasing the height gained through ascent as well.Wear the hiking boots you will be wearing on the trail.
If you have got full leather boots, they will require some breaking in before the climb. Walking in your boots will also help to toughen up your feet, and you’ll learn if there are any spots that cause blisters or pain. How to Train for High-Altitude Hiking at Sea Level (or Even Below) Hey everybody, it’s Sarah, here with your live chat. Tonight I’m going to be talking about how to train for a big-ass mountain when you live somewhere flat, because I know that’s what a lot of you are doing.
Start with the goal distance and elevation gain on week 10, the week of the actual goal hike, and work backward, subtracting roughly 10 percent each week for 10 weeks. As you train, try to hike with the pack weight you plan on hiking with on your goal hike.Cypress Hills High Altitude Trail Challenge Event Information. More than 1400 years ago in the Quran
“Whomever GOD wills to guide, He renders his chest wide open to Submission. And whomever He wills to send astray, He renders his chest intolerant and straitened, like one who climbs towards the sky.”
Chapter Name:Al-Anaam Verse No:125
one of the many scientific miracles of the Quran. Check the rest out for yourself, about the creation of the universe and the big bang theory, expansion of the universe which was only recently discovered, descriptions of the human embryo…. (Among many others)
Keep in mind, prophet mohammed could not read or write, lived in the desert during a time where nobody could ever know these things.
I am not looking to start any arguments, no need to reply. If you wanna check other scientific miracles in the Quran, do so. If not, then it’s fine no need to start an argument.

8,000 ft cabin alt at FL300? That’s some weak pressurization. The kc10 I fly in is about 4k cabin alt at the same altitude.
I just did the EBC trek. I agree completely with your video, the decents were harder than going up in most cases. But I did train almost exclusively on a stairclimber and treadmill on hill setting with success. Its extremely flat where I live. I also made it a point to get in some hikes with trekking poles and some weight in my pack as well. Gotta make do with what you have I guess… safe trekking ; )
If I climbed Everest, I would be the first person from my country to summit the mountan
SI units, please! Unless, you want to lose another spacecraft.
Jet engine is all about sucking in air and pushing it out with enormous power. now Dnews needs to explain how jet engine work efficiently with such a thin air at that altitude.
That description (hypoxia) of what happens when oneself cannot breath happens when oneself faints, also. It is an incredibly, terrifying experience; It has happened to me, and some times it’s worse than other times.
Totally agree. I got all my beautiful memorable falls on the way down
Iv hiked 8,000 11,000 feet above sea level in Colorado, and Iv bin a deep water swimmer / competative swimmer for 9 years and I’m wondering, is there a correlation between thoes 2 adaptations and second question ; ( and I know this might be kinda dumb but ) can people be adapted to highy altitude liveing, and if so how?
I use the stair master as a quick blast workout during long work days when getting outside isn’t thar easy. Lighters evenings are coming which means I’ll be heading to the local hills to train instead which is sooooo much better. Some big challenges this summer so need the training wherever I can get it!
Easy training just turn around and go down the stair master.
Great video! A big thumbs up from me! We got some Natural Remedies for Altitude sickness on our channel which might be helpful
I think i felt altitude sickness 3x whenever i fly in a commercial jet there is always a typhoon, the cabin crew always tell us how much altitude we are, and for my experience we are on some about 29,200 ft asL, thats one hell of a ride and think i always travel before no thing can make me mad except that.
So i think Annapurna is my daydream wish to summit
যারা যুদ্ধে যায় তারা যুদ্ধে যায় না, আর যারা যুদ্ধ চায় তারা যুদ্ধে যায় না।
From Houston Texas, about to summit Mt. Shasta in June! Thank you for the information it’s been very helpful!
Well presented info, JK. That’s interesting about beets being a natural vasodilator. Makes me wonder if someone is prescribed Nitro for heart conditions should take supplements like that… would be interesting to research that.
Nice work on Kilimanjaro!
I am planning my first ever “thru hike” for 2020 to do the 104 mile Highline Trail here in Utah. Majority of the trail stays above 11,000’ and has a high point of 13,500’. Beingbat that altitude for a week straight doing 10+ miles a day will be a challenge, but not so bad for me since I live at 5000’ anyway.
Feet??? This is 2018 not 1962 hahaha!
*For those outside Liberia, USA or Myanmar 8,000 feet is about 2,440 metres or roughly the same elevation as Mexico City.
This is actually incorrect. There’s no less oxygen in the air at extreme altitudes. the atmospheric pressure is just extemely low.
however, I believe that gym equipments are useful during rainy and winter seasons, when it is much more difficult to train outside
there is enough air pressure on the muntain tops. its just not enough oxygen in it. the air pressure itself is high enough and more than high enough. that the air itself is so thin is just bullshit. carbondioxide is denser than oxygen have lower altitude and as its cooled down its even more dense. there is also lot of sulfur up there as its part of cloud formation. its likely methane leaks from the crust as well. thin air have been they easy way to explain altitude sickness. its just not correct.
Want to know more about altitude sickness, check out this post. http://escapemedic.com/2018/01/07/acute-mountain-sickness/
The moment this was uploaded I was heading for mountain Olympus. Not such a huge altitude to be exact but spectacular nevertheless:)
Limpiyadhura, Lipulekh and Kalapani belongs to Nepal. Take your armies back. Stop expansionism. #Backoffindia #gobackindia
i’m planning on climbing kilimanjaro august of 2018 with a friend! i’m kind of nervous about the altitude difference, so we’ll see how it goes.:)
I will climb mount Everest with my love
in about 8 or 9 years
Great great teaching aids! Plus the tone and rate of presentation is perfect, students cant fall asleep, very well done, thank you!
Climbing Mount Everest seems like a lot of work. I rather sleep in or watch Netflix.
I was having a hefty dose of altitude sickness when I got to Gilman’s Point on Mt. Kilimanjaro. It was quite a trippy experience taking in the incredible view while feeling somewhat floaty.
Please give the meter equivalent to us more simple on the brain guys….
You can get higher with marijuana at higher altitudes, I’ve heard.
I live at 9,000 ft in a mountain town in Colorado and go skiing all the time, and getting drunk faster is NOT the furthest thing from my mind. It’s awesome.
Jay Hind Indian Army Bharat mata ki Jay Hind Kalam jindabad Jay Jawan Jay kisan
say you had the power to teleport what would happen to your body I f you teleported to the top of Everest
And I wish to own at least such a pair of plastic Mountaineering boots and crampons.
grew up on 5600 ft went to 8000 ft regularly for hot water springs never got sick or tired i moved to the uk and i get a headache every time i take in two or three deep breaths maybe your body is designed for sea level mine isn’t
I wouldn’t climb Mount Everest. It’s to risky in my opinion.
Hypoxia Even the smartest pilot could get pretty stupid fast.
I live at almost sea level,
I am flying to Colorado and staying at a VRBO at 9,600 ft.
So am I screwed?
I love your videos, guys, and this one was neat as usual! But I have a little criticism to make.
I don’t mind if you use imperial units as long as the metric equivalent is indicated visually on the screen, like you did at 1:20, that was just right. But after that (like at around 2:20), I had to keep pausing the video and googling the conversion to grasp the altitude you were referring to, and it is quite distracting…
I believe you have a lot of non-american subs, remembering we don’t use imperial would just make me like your channel even more =D
I will still use stair machine and treadmill incline to simulate elevation gains.
I thought what happened is if you go too high, and the if the air in the cabin were somehow to become the same as outside, you start to feel loopy because of that; because you have no oxygen.
I hiked to the top of Mt Whitney which is a 14,500 (4,400 meters) foot Mountain in the Sierra nevadas. At around 11,500 feet I started to feel sick AF felt like i was getting constant head rushes. I acclimated a day later tho. Id do it all over again
so much science… nerd… i stopped the video after 1 min watch… she talks so much i got sick
So what happens when you live in one of the lower altitude places like Florida? Because I can tell you from experience it feels like I’m dying a very slow, unnatural death.
I got altitude sickness after I left my home at around 250 ft to Denver Colorado
bungee jumping, sky diving, deep sea diving, artic exploring, sailing around the world solo and climbing Everest are things I will not regret not doing.
Totally agree with this method. Best way to condition is to trek is my method. I use treadmill to just keep my stamina better
There is an apparent internal contradiction in this video.
It says that blood alcohol content is independent of altitude (which is true), but it also says that high altitude concentrates blood flow through critical organs like the brain (which is also true). But this means that high altitude causes more alcohol to get into your brain compared with the same blood alcohol concentration at lower altitude.
This seems to be inconsistent with the assertion that alcohol intoxication is independent of altitude.
Thanks JK!!! That mask is almost as good as your mask voice.:)
Do a video about what happens to ur body when living on mountains and/or hills.

I hate it when people say there is less oxygen! That is false, there is less pressure! Therefore your lungs will not diffuse oxygen into the bloodstream as well.
Esme Bharti aaye tho plz YouTube per chod dena….
Plz…….,….
I’ve had both knees replaced and lumbar fusion due to a rare disease but I have a dream to climb Mt. Borah in Idaho. High impact and/or heavier weights are not recommended by my doctors. I want to get cardio in as well as strength training. Any recommendations?
Seriously Dnews, talk is cheap. Get your hosts shitfaced on Earth and in the air and really test it out.
Thank you for doing this video. I plan on hiking Mt. Kilimanjaro and I found it hard to breathe when I took the tram to the top of Sandia Peak in New Mexico so I know I need to do something to prepare in advance. I will try everything you mentioned. One question, what gloves did you wear? I have a pretty good system for keeping my feet warm but I haven’t found anything for my hands. Thanks!
The first time I flew on a plane as a kid there was an issue with the pressure in the cabin. When landing pressure was still at the same level it was at 30,000 feet, I thought my ears were going to start bleeding from how bad it hurt lol. When the doors opened there was a rush of air in the plane
This is great info!! I’m preparing to hike the colorado trail coming from Texas. Bring on the beet juice! Ha!!
Well done on Kilimanjaro. Guess we are lucky here in SoCal where i’m 30-60 minutes from some mountains that are up in the 10,000′ range.
I wish I’d seen this video before I went to Colorado. Especially about the lip balm!! Great tips John.
Very interesting video about our soldiers.Salute to them ❤️
I agree that its vital to practice descending down hills but stairmasters absolutely provide a strong cardio and quad workout. Just dont make it your primary training method.
Awesome job on Kili!!! That must have been an amazing experience! This video is a VERY informative guide of how to get ready and what to expect at altitude. Great work!!! ❄
Fun fact, at night you use more oxygen because of our “night vision”. At night, you’re more susceptible to hypoxia if you’re deprived light sources.
I agree that it doesn’t train you realistically for real hiking, what the machine does help with is building up endurance if the weather doesn’t permit outdoor training. I highly recommend a variety workout at an indoor/outdoor stadium with plenty of stairs for those living in the city.
“And if you’re doing all that, getting drunk faster should be the furthest thing from your mind.” That killed me. I love you, Amy. Nice shade. XDDD
And I totally would love to climb Everest one day. Promise I’ll drink the champagne to celebrate when I’m back at normal altitude. =P
As i live in Bangkok Thailand, i have no choice of mountains or even trails. So its a stairmaster for me i guess.
What do you think about walking down on a Stairmaster? Wouldn’t this satisfy the eccentric portion of the work out? e.g. go up 1000 steps and then turn around and go down 1000. Totally valid that the StairMaster lacks specificity and balance training but it seems like a good way to grind out endurance training in between more natural workouts/hikes. Plus, you can watch Netflix on a StairMaster 😉
There is just as much oxygen at higher altitudes as there is at low altitudes. The reason your body becomes hypoxic at higher altitudes is because there is less pressure. The oxygen molecule can’t diffuse from the alveoli and into the blood stream as well because of less pressure not less oxygen in the atmosphere
I’ve been sick for three months and am now vomiting blood…..altitude is no joke people, drink lots and lots and lots…and yes, LOTS of water
Been using beets( juiced and powder) for pre workouts for years and it’s a great cheap alternative to other nitric oxide supplements. Citrulline or arginine are also relatively cheap if you buy them in bulk. I have also used and have heard that maca root works well too
Although I live in the relatively flat prairies of Saskatchewan, Canada, I am fortunate to live about a mile from a man-made hill. It’s used by countless runners, bikers, and hikers in my community to train on. You can’t beat it for training. I’m looking into doing the EBC trek in the future, and will definitely be doing “the hill” to prepare myself! Enjoy your videos, Chase!
Can you please explain why its hard to breathe in hot and humid weather? What happens to oxygen atoms?
That’s why I wanted to be an Indian Army. Everytime I watch them, I get goosebumps. Sadly I ended up being an IT professional . But it’s still my dream to wear that uniform.
“….only 1/3 of the oxygen concentration…”
WRONG
Concentration is always them same, the (partial) pressure and the total amount are less.
बिल्कुल एक मॉन्टनर कि मौत किसी माउंट पर हो इससे अच्छा क्या हो सकता ह
Your series was really amazing am every moment I feel about IAF am trying to join IAF so I was see your series so I was motivated
I climbed kilimanjaro at 20,000 ft a few months ago and it suuuucked. Got super sick from the altitude.
One thing I’ve noticed is a stereotype about muscles in high altitude. At ground level muscular folk are usually unnatural and do little to no cardio. Most training will lead to muscle growth which is a good thing is training is proper. Larger muscles with stronger cardio depletes circulatory issues and assists in storing oxygen in larger reservoirs. This fitness can not be achieved in 2 or 3 years. Never tested but a larger climber with that fitness might be a little slower but might be able to go on longer than an average client high up on the mountain
This girl is stupid. People who lives in higher altitudes especially natives in the mountains are more healthy and lives longer.
Atmospheric pressure is not 1mb at sea level. It is 1013.25 HPa or 1013.25 mb!
This line of thinking seems a little overstated. The higher injury risk from the downhill portion is more likely to come from the combination of accumulated fatigue and descending too fast/with less care, not weaknesses stemming from not training the descent phase.
If you need to strengthen your “downhill muscles”, you should do lower body strength training. Maybe even ankle mobility work. The primary focus of your mountaineering training should be aerobic capacity, which the stairmaster fulfils in perhaps the most sport-specific way possible. It’s 100% certain that if you’re fit enough reach the summit you’re fit enough to descend from it. Take Kilimanjaro for example, 6-8 days of uphill trekking including acclimatisation. The downhill, all the way from summit to the car park? 1 half day and that’s on the same day as an exhausting summit day. That kind of scenario is the same for most mountains. So if 70-90% of your trek is uphill, and we know that training for the uphill also trains the downhill (remember aerobic capacity), then why train any differently?
There’s still roughly 21% oxygen at the bottom of the atmosphere. Additionally, there is still roughly 21% oxygen at 60,000’, and 30,000’. The ratio of oxygen is the same at any altitude you fly at. At altitude, it’s the lack of air pressure makes it difficult for the air in your lungs to be forced through the alveoli (small sacs that convey oxygen to your blood). This result deprives your blood of sufficient oxygen. Again, not because there’s “less oxygen”, but because the pressure is too little to force the oxygen through the thin wall sacs of the alveoli within your lungs, which as a result, causes a lack of oxygen in your blood. This lack of oxygen in the blood deprives the brain of adequate oxygen resulting in, what is known
as, hypoxic hypoxia.
Climbed 4600m 15000ft. and Had a Rum there.. Got energized:D
