Great information. Thank you. I always prefer running on an empty stomach as any food I eat just seems to sit there for a while and make me feel heavy.
I can tell that you have done quite a bit of research, thank you for this video!!! Made me think of a lot more questions…
I ran 22 miles today on a VERY empty stomach and I didn’t like it very much at all. I didn’t even eat dinner. I know I went over board with the mileage but you live and learn
This video is all wrong. First of all your body never runs out of energy until you die. If you run out of energy your brain and heart shut down and you die. Ironically people that starve to death usually die because their brain is dissolving your organs to keep the energy supply flowing. During starvation people usually die from organ failure. The diaphragm is usually the first target and when its been broken down too much, you can no longer breath and you literally asphyxiate all the while, your brain still has energy until the very end. Secondly, your muscles store about 500-1000 calories of easily digestible carbs at all times and your liver stores another 2000. Even on an empty stomach youd have to exercise for about 2500 calories worth before stored fat is utilized, which is alot more exercise than you might think. Sprinting at your top speed with no rest for 60 mins burns about 1200-1500 calories and thats a pretty fucking intense workout. Ive never seen one person at the gym come close to that. Thirdly, you have fat tissue on your body that can easily be converted to usable energy on demand. One pound of fat is about 3500 calories. If youre a 200 pound man with 10% body fat do the math. You have a whopping 70,000 calories sitting on your body ready to be broken down during your workout. To put things into perspective, in his prime michael phelps was about 200 pounds with about 10% body fat and he was shredded and built like a human tank. The average american is much higher than 10% body fat. Muscle protein breakdown starts really having a noticeable effect after you burn through all those calories. So calculate your body fat percentage, figure out how many calories are sitting in fat reserves, add 2500 and thats how many calories you’d have to burn through before you really start running out of energy. And even then, your body has more calories in your muscles it has to burn through. After all that, you start dying. If you calculate how many calories you burn in a day with how many reserve calories you can figure out how many days you can last without eating a single calorie. And guess what? As fat and sedentary as America is, most people can go an entire year without eating a single calorie before they start really running into trouble, assuming youre still getting water and electrolytes, neither of which has any calories. So the idea that working out on an empty stomach or in a fasted state means you run out of energy is absurd. Think of how weak our caveman ancestors would have been if they couldnt run away or towards things after not eating for a day? We never would have survived in the wilderness. The genes that adapted our ancestors to a world filled with food scarcity exists in you now. It just feels like you run out of energy working out fasted because your brain is so addicted to three square meals a day. But with a little conditioning and those anti starvation genes will activate and youll survive for awhile.
I just eat a banana 30 mins before going for run in the morning it gives me just enough energy it works for me, after I finish I take a protein shake.
I am trying for 1600 meters in 5 minutes.
I mostly run empty stomach in the morning. So should eat carbs like few black grams before run?
Hi Lee, as this is the month of Ramdan, I’ve been pretty much extremely limited in lifting because I cannot get my proper protein in…I know this leads to losing gains but how long do you think it will take to recover?
I like your humble approach because no one has all the answers. You ask 20 people and you will get 20 different answers. Drs don’t know it all. That’s why it’s called a practice. They change their mind every year as to what you should be doing physically, eating, and how to lose weight lol. Great video!
No background music please. Thank you sir. I enjoy your clarity of thought.
Breakfast, to me, is essential. Why on earth should we omit breakfast before running if we do eat it on a daily basis WITH NO running?
The best treatment I ever found is on McMillan’s website. He explains specific situation where eating breakfast is mandatory (i.e. intervals/repeats, pace stepping-up long runs, etc.), and other ones i.e. steady long runs where it could be omitted.
Sugar is also far from being the best choice as a nutrient in advanced marathoning. Cereal crackers or so, 1 to 1,5 hrs before training, will work best (IMHO). As a ruler of thumb, I used to eat 1 or two bananas when 21 km distance is overcome, prior to continuing my way. Thanks!
Is it true that eating breakfast before running triggers appendicites?
Wow such a complicated topic and essentially the best answer is just do what feels best. The body is funny like that.
Great subject. Thanks for the info. I always run on empty first thing in the morning and often feel sluggish and my pace is around 6min/kms. I will experiment with maybe eating some fruit before I head out and see if that improves both my energy and performance. Btw Mikkel, do you drink coffee??
First off I don’t like the music in the background lol. I have ran over 40 marathons with ten Bostons in a row and I have found that for me eating prior to running is the way to go. I feel that I need the carbs to help me run my fastest. For a marathon I eat, then take 4 gels, one every 40 minutes or so and about 20oz of sports drink per hour during the race. Marathon fueling is different for everyone, you really need the experience of racing to find what works for you.
This is a great discussion. I run 4 days a week, anywhere between 3-10 miles per run. I intermittent fast on most days and typically run fasted for all my runs with the exception of anything over 10. On race (1/2 marathons and marathons) days I always eat and wonder if my fasted training is helping or hurting me on race day. I typically don’t bonk during the week and I do not steer away from complex carbs:). But admittedly, I do love nut butters and avocados: ). Thanks for bringing up the topic, I look forward to learning more. I am going to try your suggestion of bringing some gels on my longer runs to eat after an hour or so 😉
I ran 22 miles today on an empty stomach and I won’t be doing that again. I did lose 5lbs but I know I went over board with the mileage.
Run 4-5 miles each day fastedfollow 16-8 intermittent fasting routine. Have been shedding pounds regularlylost -15 lbs in 2 months
I’m not a breakfast person normally, so fasted run/walk is my preference.
Always run on empty. It feels great. Any other way just feels sluggish
I love my fasted runs, wouldn’t be without them! It’s made a massive difference to my race times when I do have fuel in the tank
Long run wise I have to have something in my stomach. I feel like toward the last 1/3 of my run I can tell that I haven’t eaten and I get nauseous. But maintenance runs I definitely can go without. Thanks for the information!
I learned to run fasted during my first TLAM training cycle, took about 3 months to get there, but it is a game changer! 15 months now. So freeing to be able to get up to 3 hours running in on an empty stomach and not have a change in energy levels during that time.
I have been doing my weekend runs on an empty stomach because I do them so early, but I’m only up to 3.5-4 miles so
it’s fine. I’ve wondered if longer ones in the future will need food; good to know you don’t think it’s necessarily so. I suppose it’s experimenting. I ran my first race last Saturday and it was a couple hours later than I normally would run, but it was still just fine not eating or drinking coffee, although I want to experiment and see what coffee might do for my next 5K. I finished in 30:38, though, and was thrilled with that for my first so maybe if it’s not broke, don’t fix it!
now I am wondering that if to lose weight is it better to run in the morning or night?
I run fasted because I just don’t have time to let all the food digest, get in my run and make it to work on time and I don’t normally eat breakfast until three hours after I get up on non running days anyways. What has really helped me is to have a small post workout snack right after my run. It only is about 60 calories but it keeps me from feeling starved all day. I’m also working on becoming fat adapted so that my fat burning pathway becomes really efficient.
I guess I am a fasted runner! I have had a bagel and peanut butter…or some sort of bread item….but only a couple times and always before half marathons. I like running fasted, for the most part, as I feel it is less dangerous in the bathroom/upset stomach department. I can eat my energy gummies during if I’m feeling “low”, then eat all the foods after ;). Haha, I’m hungry, too!
Obviously I didn’t hear anything you said as I was far too busy admiring the remarkably well organised shelves behind you.
On the off chance you were talking about running/fasting I find nutrition and running a very difficult nut to crack.
I have often had a morning run without previous nourishment. It was ok. May go back to having a couple of gentle runs without food every week.
I wouldn’t want to race run without having something pre run!
I have just been able to rejoin the gym! Partially because of the 2 small group sessions per week these are not quite HIIT but they certainly push me (sweat, raised rate) which I know I need to keep my (pretty good) weight steady, perhaps even lose a little more fat and increase my general fitness. No easy solutions.
By the by this evening I have been planning (and booking) my runs as I build up to 1 of my goals for next year which is to run a miles in 24 hours….if I can….. if I get the nutrition correct!
I typically have a stroopwaffel before my runs. I have tried fasted runs but didn’t like it.
I have done it. I wake up very hungry in the mornings. So the first couple of miles I am in a VERY bad mood lol. But I’ve done it and surprisingly I have run faster when I have run fasted
What kind of cardio exercise to do if wanna lose fat?? Please give some tips… Iv’e been training about 3 weeks. But nothing changing. Really need some advise.
I’m usually up at 5am and out the door before 6am, so I pretty much always run fasted. This can be challenging when you’ve got a race and are awake hours before you start running. In those cases, I may have a small thing of oatmeal before hand, but I usually struggle to get it down because of nerves and it being so early. So fasted it usually is. I also have stomach issues when running after eating right away. But lesson learned last week, don’t take cold meds and run fasted. Yeah, never doing that again.
This guy was not in a state of ketosis, which takes a few days of fasting to occur. Exercising in ketosis has a different outcome.
I run up to 8 miles fasted, anything longer than that I eat something.
At first I felt lack of energy when I went for a run on a empty stomach, but after some time I got used to it, my body adapted and now I prefer running in a fasted state. The more important factor is hydration.
Stop lying you fucking bitch. Why body will break down muscles when fat storage in there
I usually like your videos but this is complete rubbish. Your body adapts and burns fats especially the more you do this. People On keto are walking around alive and well. Their body dosnt eat away at all the muscle Tissue once glycogen is tapped out.
Fasted cardio is for girls cus it burns muscles as well and make you thin not slim.
In boot camp there were mornings we ate before we did PT, then there were days we did PT first then ate. Either way I was a worn out piece of shit recruit, but I guess I can’t judge it because that’s the point of boot camp, to break you down.
In civilian world, I tried it both ways, I lose more if I workout before I eat than after, but watch what I eat the rest of the day as well
Well, if I just did begun jogging, I would believe this video, but given my personal experience, I did performed better when my stomach is empty. The most important thing is to have enough fat….
big bob tried the paleo diet tried for two weeks and has given up after seeing 2 lb lost but keto kevin said to try the keto diet he gave it a try and lost 5 lb but big bob gave up because he needs bread
I don’t like cardio but i love to train in a fasted state. And no,you don’t lose muscle that fast. Especially if you overweight. Just stop doing only cardio and lift some weights! You lose a lot of fat first and than,if you over train, maybe you can lose some muscle.
This video is false. Many people do fasted cardio and you dont burn muscle for energy that fast.
Big Bob probably could have kept going but was telling himself he could not. If your workouts dont make you want to stop then your not working hard enough.
Also, Longer is not always better. My HIIT workouts are 15 minutes and I burn more calories doing that then I do Running for 1 hour.
I never eat in the morning, because if I do I feel sick, tired and lazy. I eat my first meal about 3-5 hours after getting up and I have a lot of energy and feel very good that way.
I do fasting and training lost 23 kilo within my first month and 2 weeks. also i have gained muscle cuz off staying in ketosis + breaking my fast with mtc oil or rice crackers then adding inn carbs + protein with as small amount off fat as i can. doing 48 hour fasts. Feeling energized and great so seeing this is kinda weird:/ was 121 kilos. I will continiue since it works gr8 for me.
2yrs i run without eating….1 because im on a diet 2. i dont like heavy body while running…it was good for 9months 15months of the 2yrs no weightloss
Would you not get different results if you’re in ketosis though? I’ve been on keto for a while and started doing intermittent fasting and started to only eat after I work out. Would it make sense that your body would convert fat into ketones, rather than muscle? I think that when your body is geared towards eating carbs, you would typically see it trying to eat away at muscle since it is easier to convert protein to glucose than fat, and in that case fasting would not be good for you, but there could very easily be different results if your body is in ketosis.
This is how i do fasted cardio
1 eat breakfeast
2 go to school or work
3 dont eat ANYTHING while doing this, but remember to stay hydrated
4 go run and after your run is over eat lots of food
5 see those results
fasted cardio worked best for me I already lost 20lbs in 4 weeks, well that is combined with interval weight training, high protein high fiber diet, and a caloric deficit, intermittent fasting
I am not agree with this video. Not bcoz you are tired you will stop. You need to push your self until your body adopt your training.
Sound advice, Lee. In an ocean of Bro/Pseudoscience, yours is an island of reason and sense.
What ive been doing during ramadan is a day on day off workout, so workout monday, take tuesday off, workout wednesday etc etc..
the timings ive been doing is approx 45mins before its time to eat, so if I can start eating at 9.10pm I start my workout at 8.20pm, from what ive experienced is that our bodies are designed to be pushed, and as long as you take in your fluids during the night you’re good to go.
From the food point of view, in london we have a 6 hour eating period at night, so I have 3 meals, all inc proteins, carbs, vegs.
This has worked for me for the past 3 years and hope it helps everyone else.
Id say his first option is best. Go for a walk on an empty stomach then get your meals in and train later. And i say go for a walk because if you do really demanding cardio work on an empty stomach youll start to burn muscle instead of fat because its a better source of fuel for the body.
Between this video and dr. Jason Fung and dr. Berg videos, I prefer the real doctors videos. You need to watch those doctors videos and let us know what you think.
Stop being a lazy bitch ass and go work out before you have breakfast. It works for the ones who are hard workers
Two fuels fat and carbs. You’ll work out better wirth carbs solely on the fact that it can be stored directly in the muscle.
Fat can be stored in the muscles as well but needs tk be broken down first.
Who the fuck wakes up hungry? I don’t get hungry until like 11am
I have been doing this for a long time but on coffee with a combination of intermediate fasting. With some good music and some friends you can go on. But yes, I do worry about the breakdown of muscles so whey protein is the best I can do combined with some orange juice.
Bob should have talked with Scotty before going out with Fiona…
As someone with experience…if I exercise and didnt eat enough before hand I will end up in the hospital
Big Bob knows fuck all’s. I lost 60 pounds in 5 months by changing my diet and fasted HIIT cardio for an hour 6 days a week.
There’s no evidence showing you burn more fat on an empty stomach. So long story short do what makes you feel most comfortable:)
All you need to lose weight is to burn more energy than youve eaten. Do any excercise without eating carbonhydrates your body should start taking energy from its reserve: fat
I lift on an empty stomach so I can use up my glycogen stores and then run after and my body has no choice but to use fat as fuel c: lost 20lbs in 2 months and would just eat good protein and carbs after my work out (.)
Fasted cardio gives you alot of energy and you need to workout in a certain heart rate window for it to work right. If you do it right it will work. If not your just wasting your time
There were a few times I tried waking up 0500hrs everyday to run. Couldn’t make it. So I stick to evening run after work. Its always so so so so so so difficult to wake up early to run.
Wtf go away overweight people will not lose muscle while carrying 30-40% body fat, if u are gonna do cardio during the day u will be hungry at the end of the day however for fasted cardio lets say 1 hour walk before last day’s breakfast time u will not get hunger all day only in that hour i know fat loss is just about cals but the reality is finding a way that u can go on it. Fasted cardio or not eating until lets say 1 pm are so easy to do even when u are trying to lose fat. And im sure u dont know anything about fat loss overweight people dont even lose muscle mass on 800 kcal deficit while eating 100g protein the lower your body fat the more muscle is gonna be burnt but if you dont go on crash diets muscle loss will not exceed fat loss
I walk like an hour in the morning while I fast. I wouldn’t run because your body already in Catabolic state so your going extreme Catabolic. It’s like lifting heavy where is that energy gonna come from. But a walk even if your not fasting helps burn fat that’s what it’s there for.
Fasted cardio is trash.
If you work out really hard you can eat whatever you want and burn it all comfortably.
today morning i did my first fasted running so i would like to share my experience at satrting start with slow speed that end with high speed so yes it works well and ya i feel just awesome after that and not eaten nothing after 2 hours rembember the main key points do streaching up to 25 minutes which would relax ur tightness of mucels and reduce the risk of injuries spelling mistakes avoid it
The body will burn the stored fat before it eats into muscle. That’s what the stored fat is there for.
How would this apply to a calisthenics workout? I just started less than a month ago with Australian pull ups, leg raises, pushups and planks. I do those in that order three times. Takes me about 30 minutes which includes a warm up and some cool down stretches. I never eat first thing in the morning anyway so I’m used to that, so just wondering how empty/not empty stomach applies here. Thanks Lee!
Okay sorry but I gotta be that guy. You gave a very specific and wrong version of how this SHOULD be done.
First thing is you wake up and you do have something to help you: Caffeine and BCAA’s.
Caffeine isnt for more weight loss but for more energy. Your “second wind” will be easier to get.
BCAA’s can get complicated but to simple it down what it does is help preserve muscle and either does not effect caloric intake or if it does it’s so minimal that your body won’t accept it as a reason to get out of fasted state.
Next the cardio should be HIIT. Get on the treadmill, or get ready outside, and walk at a fast but reasonable pace to warm up for 2 minutes. Then sprint for 2 minutes. Repeat this 4 minute back and forth a minimum of 5 times to 7 times. 7 times will be 28 minutes. Do not stray too past the 30 min window.
Have a cooldown walk. Get off and stretch it out. (Can perform low intensity body weight or medium level ab training for a little extra).
This here program for fasted cardio WILL lose you significant weight and retain most if not all muscle. How do I know? I lost 15 lbs and still can hold my PR’s and rep counts per exercise.
It works. You just have to do it right.
i run and bike (hour of cardio) at 6 am to use the stored glycogen in my muscles and to release it a bit quicker i drink my first coffee about hakf hour before i go…… i can then eat a big bowl of porridge and train with weights later using my stored slow release porridge energy so i never gain fat….my body is a bank and fat is money…. i try to spend what i save…….i never have any money in the bank:)…… your advice is sound and practical Lee
I find having a shot of protein powder and water before going for a run works well for me. I then come home and have a full meal of 1/3 cup quinoa flakes 1 tablespoon flax and 1 tablespoon chia seeds. I also have a piece of fruit. Sometimes I don’t feel like eating after and just wanna nap…. So I just have more protein and water as well as a piece of fruit.
Wouldn’t be easier to practice discipline and try and eat foods, being fruit or any other type of healthy things (veggies, other foods with nutrients) for the day, and then run say, two hours after an early dinner? That’s what I did, and it worked out really well. Ran 2 to 3 miles almost 5 days a week, and I got good results. You need the energy from food to have a good run I would think, so you’d just use that energy while on a nightly run.
I ate before going for my walk where I run a little inbetween walking, and I couldn’t run for even half as long as I usually can. Which isn’t much to begin with (I have low endurance or some shit.) My problem might have been the type of carbs… A frape, Mcgriddle and hashbrown from McDonalds…. lol
Maybe is different for some people, I can’t do that, I tried to do it and I almost fainted and had a big stomach pain, the doctors at the gym said that I needed to eat something an hour before if I didn’t want that to happen again, and other doctors told me the same thing, maybe fasting is not just for everyone
a fasted cardio purpose is to dump all your sugar stores in your body. Not for performance but for LONG TERM health.
This video’s is just a big ass excuse..everyone that I know lost weight doing this..its a mind set your gonna stay fat because you just can’t put down the food..hahah..1 pound is better then NOTHING..keep on doing fatty it takes at least 3 months to see real results
Hi Lee, I’ve been going to a strength & conditioning camp in the morning for the past few weeks on a empty stomach because I cannot wake up in time to eat before. It’s easy for me at the camp to do both the agility and plyometrics along with the weight training involved also, but does this mean I’m losing some performance levels as I do not have energy due to lack of glycogen and calories? Thanks.
I wish fasting would work for me, but I have to eat something before i work out. The previous times I tried it, I felt like i was going to faint or vomit. I even had to stop and sit on the ground because of my stomach was hurting too much. It’s great for people that it works for, but it doesn’t work for me.
Nice Video clip! Forgive me for butting in, I would love your opinion. Have you heard about Dinanlinson Amazing Look Approach (search on google)? It is a smashing one of a kind guide for learning how to quickly lose weight without the normal expense. Ive heard some pretty good things about it and my mate after a lifetime of fighting got astronomical success with it.
Ah, ok. So I’ve been doing intermittent fasting for about two weeks now and I’m seeing really good results and feeling good but I did have a regular exercise routine before hand. Thanks for the info.
So far I’ve only run fasted anytime I try to eat before I run I run into tummy me troubles
I mean no disrespect, but you have no idea what you’re talking about.
I clicked on this cause I thought this was the same as Asap science.. this is just story telling. Where is the science and faccccttsss?
I started going to the gym fasted (like bob first time running/fast walking) and I’m more motivated than before when I used to eat and then go to the gym.
I go for an hour fasted run in the mornings and I don’t feel too low on energy. I’m not a big bob tho I guess
I don’t recommend fasted cardio, I was dumb and I did it for almost a year, I did lose 20 pounds and got skinny, but I lost all of my muscle. Therefore I am now the weakest of all of my friends and I now need to gain muscle. So make sure you don’t go over board like me and ruin your body.
Yes consistency is key here but getting used to fasted cardio is good. eating before working out makes you bloated and sometimes burp and puke a little
speaking from experience. of course everyone’s different
I’ve lost about five pounds in the last two weeks doing fasted cardio+ working out while doing intermitted fasting.
Not sure if this helps or not, I take bcaa with my preworkout.
Remember, since everyone is different you’ll never know till you try. Always experiment with your body
I’m a skinny guy, is doing cardio on an empty stomach before eating breakfast a good idea?
dont listen to this shit guys. don’t eat anything in the morning run on empty stomach do some cardio like sprints ull tear ur muscles and burn fat. then you can eat. but healthy obviously.
Wats the point of reading emails if ur gonna butcher wat they say
Could someone tell me is it bad when someone runs before breakfast??
say i was to have last eatn 7 hours ago and decide to jump rope in fasted state for 45-60min. would that have too much effect towards my muscle or no? i know when doing it in fasted state they typically say to keep it light if u want to workout for a longer period of time.
I like running on a fast, then replenishing up an hour after. It conditions not only the body but the mind intensively
hi lee because i am very obease and doing intense cardio. can i do intense cardio on a empty stomach?
Hello! The video is kinda old but I got a question for you. I wanna get rid of my big, bulky calve muscles. At least I wanna slim them down. Will running in the morning on an empty stomach help to burn my calve muscles? Greetings
Lol I was getting scared to the reason why you may not want to walk…then he said “if you’re not a morning person don’t do it” haha I though it was something else. I’m a morning person so I guess there won’t be an issue.
I got a question if i do cardio on an empty stomach will i lose fat and weight? Will it come back after or will it burn it for good? When i do cardio in the morning how long do i have to wait to eat and what do i eat?
Hi Lee i do 30 mins cardio and 30 mins weight training on an empty stomach in the early morning. My target to loose my belly fat and to get a body shape. I got shape in all parts expect the belly fat i am struggling. Will it work for me to reduce it
Have more energy in the morning therefor I know it will get done.
Empty stomach yes but not if running a further than 10 miles.
No, I do not eat after cardio for at least an hour. Your body will burn fat after the run instead of the carbs you eat.
Long cardio 3 days a week is better than short cardio 6 days a week. Your body switches over to burn fat with long cardio, it doesn’t do it with short cardio sessions, it burns carbs.
All from experience and learning the hard way over many many years.
You need to maintain 6 miles a week or 12 miles walking for the rest of your life. It will maintain your current weight.
If you want to burn fat and lose weight you need to walk 28-30 miles a week. You can lose 40 lbs. in a year without dieting. Or you can run 12-14 miles a week. Same, you can lose 40 lbs in a year without dieting.
The number one thing on a weight program before anything else is:
Learning how to maintain your weight. If you don’t learn this you will be one of these people who gain and diet your whole life. I know, I was one of these people.
If you don’t mind dieting it makes weight loss much faster but you don’t have to diet if your willing to put in the work and have patience.
this nigga reminds me of writing a paragraph in middle school just throwing more words just to make the paragraphs longer uhhg
haw about doing cardio in the evening after launch in about 2 to3 hours????(just for belly fat), or should I eat than go for a run?
If i was doing an hour run every evening on an empty stomach except my weekend how long would i need to wait from my last meal thanks
When it comes to fasted cardio, if im to jump rope is it fine to do it for 60min or should i do it for less since im reading under a fastes state if ur gonna workout for a longer length it should b less intense. Cuz i know the length of cardio in a fasted state also varies to how long uv fasted. So say 7 hrs fasted, do rope for 60min is that fine or u think i should do it for a shorter time to avoid muscle loss?
It could be true but also it could not be true. We have no fucking idea. Thanks for watching!
I First do cardio which is 30 minutes running than later in the day i do Wright training.
Sorry brother, but you’re not doing yourself any favors doing fasted cardio
Can I run on tredmell for over 20 minutes not exceeding 30 empty stomach?
Will my body use my hard earned muscle mass?
Great video..but I don’t think the body burns into muscle that quick…well maybe being if your strength training often…how I live*…burn into fat..
Just caught up to this vid. Really good perspective. I usually like to do cardio first & then weight training second. All the while fasted state. But perhaps I will changed things up & try to weight train at another time during the day.
biggest tip i understood is that don’t make your own logic and bioscience cardio don’t burn muscles
Great video, I typically have my bagel and coffee in the morning, then play tennis for an hour, and then go to the gym and lift weights for a half hour and stretch
Thank you Lee. Everyone is on this new IF kick with training and cardio in the morning on a empty stomach which is nonsense. Cardio yes but these nuts are training and doing cardio then going all day without food to create a 4 hour eating window
I don’t see anyone getting big doing that so I hope you can make a video about the myth of IF. Morning cardio is perfect but we all need food before utilizing free weights especially if you want to gain muscle I’ve always agreed with your fitness plans and I’ve seen incredible results thank you
I’ve only recently returned to the Gym doing three sessions per week (Monday, Wednesday & Friday). I start every session with a bout of cardio which tends to be on a bike using a “variety” program for 20 minutes, with a stint on C2 rower doing sprint intervals for 10 minutes. From there I move onto some resistance training & core; V-Traction, Leg Press, Shoulder Press, Chest Press, Squats, Dumbbell Lunge, Calf Raises, Overhead Slam Ball and Russian Twist. When I get to the office, I eat breakfast.Having see some of your other videos, I feel I need to add some other exercises to counteract the shoulder press, and the chest press; I’m thinking Horizontal Row & Lateral Raises….what are your thoughts?
How about doing cardio twice a day?
For example, 2-3 miles morning and night?
I strongly agree with you.. cardio in early morning, and workout later.
ABOUT WEIGHTS TRAINING I disagree. Do weight training when you get around to it, there is no right time. GYM is packed in the evenings. If you have more or less meals it makes no difference. As long as you’re getting all your meals in and moving up in weight you will get stronger regardless of what time you train or how many meals you had before or after. ABOUT CARDIO I use to be the dude that thought oh no don’t do cardio before weights it’s gonna affect my work out… non sense, it’s not like you’re going to be killing yourself doing HIIT like he said just a light cardio. Now I do my cardio before my weights and I feel it wakes up my body and gets it ready for exercise. ABOUT THE TOPIC I prefer a shake before I work out but am going to experiment with a banana and BCCAs before I work out. P.S Like you’re videos Lee, just have a different opinion on this topic.
if your doing cardio with out a meal wont there be a chance that your body will use your muscle as fuel??
Are there supplements that would enhance/benefit results? BCAA? CLA? CARNITINE?
Can u eat a BCAA+Glutamine pills before cardio? to prevent muscle losses? I remember my 15km morning runs with empty stomach.. I lost aroud 12kg per two months, but muscle lost as well.
Boooo! This makes no since, unless I’m super woman but I can go jogging in 91 degrees weather after coming home from work for 30 mins without no food in my stomach other than water and be fine and dance for 2 hours for fun.
please clear my doubt mate
I read an article about doing cardio with an empty stomach with burn muscles to provide energy and slows your metabolism rate…
so they recommend to do cardio after breakfast..
Is It TRUE…..
1. Do i need to eat breakfast right away after done my cardio on an empty stomach or it doesnt matter?
2. How low should be my heart rate for low intensity cardio?
Thanks!
thank you so much,, i go to play-ground just for fitness.i don’t have time in the evening,, earlier i used to go in the evenings but now due to study schedule i have to change the schedule. i have fear that, is it good to run in the morning or harmful… on empty stomach i run 2000 run daily and after that do pushups about 200 in 6 sets…please tell me.. should i go on or no.. or what things i should do
So I am half muscley right, so I wanna burn heaps of fat, but keep muscle! Heard that walking on a empty stomach first thing in the morning is great for it, but I don’t wanna lose muscle?? Is this what I should do???
Oh man, Totally didn’t work for me! I don’t recover well, and eat more from the crash afterwards, than if I just keep myself fueled. Everyone is different though, hopefully works for you!!
when glycogen levels are depleted your body doesnt immediately turn to muscle, thats ridiculous. only after long term fasting (6+Days) mixed with intense exercise.
fat is stored energy and our bodies are designed to use it when needed.
Fuck Fit Fiona for leaving him, just for his Body. They could have exercised together.
I took some nonbro science course but I certainly didn’t pay as much attention as you guys here have. I’m 5’11” 215 pounds now, 31. I was 320 about two years ago. I strength train and do aerobic workouts. 24 min 5k, 54 min 10k… my brother did a jogging only and a strict fasting every night diet around 270. He just caught up to my weight but his fitness is relatively crap. I do realize that I can over work myself if i dont generally eat enough and I do lose muscle in those instances. The best compromise for me is doing strengh workouts prior to running and just eating a little more. It works well generally. I can run ok in the morning but it is slower than the afternoon. If I skip lunch and run like 12 hours after breakfast I suck pretty bad. I prefer to stuff my face and to do my little lift before cardio routine. It has been a struggle to advance in the two areas simutanouesly but I’m slowly getting there. Going to 175
hey..i do both..first cadio (not for whole 5 days workout..wednesday rest and sunday rest)..cadio on monday..tuesday..thursday..saturday(squat day)..in the morning time with empty stomach i eat one bananna after cardio and start my work out..please sugges any modificaitons…i can do exercise only in mornning time due to work schedule…appreciate your reply..
I eat breakfast first then I’ll lift I can’t go hungry while working out I do sometimes when I’m not hungry in morning then I’ll walk the dog in the evening
hi Lee….dont you think that doing cardio after 8 or so hours of fasting will make your body to use muscle as an energy source?
Glad you asked, Lee!
My routine has been to do a fasted walk about a mile or so, around the block where I live. A fairly hilly area, there’s a lot of ups and downs. My FitBit One tells me there is the equivalent of about 8 flights of stairs on this brisk walk. It only takes me about 10 minutes, so sometimes I might do 2 or 3 times around but if it’s leg day, I’ll only go once.
At my job, I’m on my feet all day and I walk about 7000-10000 steps a day walking in the mornings not included. So, I need to make sure I save something for the boss, lol.
I do a three day split. I’ll do the fasted walk every day and when I’m done, I’ll have a simple protein shake. 8oz of Almond Milk Unsweetened, Original, with 1 serving of oat flour (I put the oatmeal in a food processor. It’s 100 calories worth of oatmeal.)
and 1 scoop of whey isolate protein. (130 calories per scoop) If I’m feeling sluggish, I’ll add 1 oz banana but only if I’m really tired. Otherwise, that’s it.
After the workout, I’ll have another protein shake, with some creatine, a multi-vitamin, some ground flaxseed and some carrots and raspberries, strawberries or blueberries. Just depends on what was cheap at the store. I pre-measure all the fruits into 1 ounce portions so I can just dump them in my blender. I use a small Hamilton Beech that probably only holds about 20 ounces altogether, so it keeps the shakes small and not too calorically dense. The two smoothies together average about 650 calories combined.
I’m not trying to build any muscle just trying to keep it, so eating big isn’t a good idea for me. If I didn’t have to jet off to work, I’d forgo the shakes and eat real food instead. Protein is protein. Since we grow when we’re sleeping, I don’t think it really makes that much difference for a guy like me just trying to maintain.
I don’t like to run and what i do is i go to Jones beach in the summer and do circuit using the benches (steps ups). I also use long bands. I attach them at a pole or bench and run back and forward, side to side combining with deep squats. After that I practice kendo basic movements to work my arms and taekwon-do basic kicking and punching combos. These i use them for the cardio. Love it but i come home and i need a walker LOL! I am 50 years old, a little overweight, very flexible. But my problem is when i start to cool down. Join pains start! Maybe i need more protein in my diet? Slow down???? NEVER!!!! I train 4 times a week for 2 hours. Your tips are great! Thank you!
hey lee can i get your take on this. i wake up at 5am make black coffee.. hit gym from 530am -645 am doing weights then finish up with 30 min cardio. shower then head home usually first meal is around 930am. id like to get bigger and stronger and stay some one lean thanks lee!!!
Great video Lee!! I also like doing steady-state cardio in the morning taking my dogs on walk for 40-50 min.
On the weekends I get my cardio done in the morning before I eat. On weekdays it is cardio at night with my training. I just don’t have open mornings on the weekdays cause I gotta fall out of bed and into my clothes to get on the train to work (FYI I get up at 5 in the morning so I’m not making excuses unless getting up at 3 or 4 o’clock is what someone wants to count as reasonable when I got a full day of work til 6 in the afternoon).
This is the thing. I don’t think it matters bc no matter what you’re expending a huge amount of energy when you sleep so technically you have carbs from the night before in your system so you do have “energy” to weight train on an empty stomach. On an empty stomach I personally like to weight train first then cardio bc cardio no matter if you eat after is still cardio and instead of making 2 trips to the gym I can get everything out of the way in one go.
I always lift after I eat dinner. I feel stronger later in the day and my body is used to working out later on.
When I wake up I eat breakfast, go to the gym weight train then do cardio or I weight train after I get off work at 12am then I do cardio later.
breakfast first, cardio, workout routine, then stretching is what i do every morning. is that good or bad?
“Fasted Cardio” seems to work for me, doing it once every 14 days. I do some sport regularly/almost daily (jogging, Judo, aerobics); every second week or so, I start by eating little in the evening, little in the morning, and then do instead of lunch a run (jogging) at lunchtime. I don’t feel any hunger then, and my body feels sufficiently filled up with energy, I can do the distance around 15 kilometers or more (without much food in the 18 hours before including the sleep phase -, but not without no food, always with some small “sugar”)
The fascinating thing is that the “impact” effect seems to last for some days, I feel it triggers my fat metabolisms even hours or days after the event. So I eat normal (not heavy) all days, and I have this extra day now, where I go running on an empty stomach, at slow speed (from 5.5 down to 7 minutes per kilometer) but at great distance (for around 2 hours or more). After the run, I am really low on sugar (blood-sugar), so I start eating normally as soon as it feels alright after the run. I was really fascinated to realize that it works for me. (I lost in average around 90..95 grams/day in the last few weeks, given all other measures/effects combined)
My question is;
I eat breakfast and hit the gym. I warm up with a little cardo and hit the weights. Is this not good? I heard you talk about empty stomachs and also about having enough food in your system to train hard with good results.
While I was watching this video I thought ” Boy if you gonna lift heavy on an empty stomach, be ready to pass out “. Then I just realized that during school the only time I have to work out it’s at 5 am, I would always only have coffee with a lot of milk and nothing else.. still hit a couple of PR’s lol.
If you want a more scientific aproach to this subject. This guy talks about it more in depth /watch?v=dyUnJr7PcQc&list=UUlT_n6c98KrXSJq944cBHZA&index=6
What i do is get up in the morning and do my cardio and then right after i go to the gym and work out, works great for me
This video is misleading. Fasted cardio taps into your fat reserves for energy. Unless you look like a holocaust prisoner or you’re a marathon runner, your muscles don’t get burned up before your fat.
I do Circuit Training twice weekly (can’t do “regular” cardio!) for cardio in the afternoon several hours after I digest the lunch but I eat RIGHT away but on the regular days when I do my regular splits I wait at least 1 hour. Works for me!
i have been doing some body weight circuits first thing in the morning after breakfast, following by some pyramid sets with weights, presses one day and pulls the next starting light and going heavy, i find i burn off a lot more cals than using the cv equipment and gaining muscle too.
I totally agree with Lee the best thing to do in the morning is the cardio since you wanna cut some fat because it keeps your body accelerated throughout the day
Thank You Lee, was going to work at this on my own, found this informative. Hope this helps me jump start my fat loss. PEACE
Thank you lee I really this is help for me! I’ll do it what you say!^^
I do weight training first thing in the morning because my gym gets crowded later in the day. I want to be able to do all my exercises without waiting for any weight or machine. Otherwise I would be doing weight training after I have gotten a few meals in. But for some reason I feel stronger in the morning doing it that way on an empty stomach. I have set PRs in the morning on an empty stomach so I guess it all depends on how your body responds. But before I do all this drink a concoction of bcaas mixed with greens before I head to the gym. And afterwards I get more meals in to overcompensate working out on an empty stomach.
Hey Lee, i’m curious as to your thoughts on frequency for arm training. I’ve got a chest that would look proportional on a 230lb guy while my arms would fit a 175lb intermediate lifter…which sucks. I have always had a pretty thick chest and i mainly attribute it to the crazy 5-day bench program i picked up from you probably 7 or 8 years ago, which gave me superhuman gains (unless it’s genetic, but i doubt it).
Do you think a 5 day training program like blast-your-bench where you target diff rep ranges and alternate emphases on bis/brachialis/tris/forearms would stimulate growth in somebody training for 10+yrs? Or would it just be overkill?
Going to make myself do the morning cardio. Never been a morning workout kinda guy but the wife and I are headed to the Caribbean in late August. The only body fat I’ve got is the spare tire and it needs to GO. Had shoulder surgery in late 2012, started your 12-week program about six months later (did it for 18 weeks though) and got back to where I was when I quit working out two years before surgery, and am now pushing myself through the Kris Gethin DTP workout which calls for cardio every other day. Taking Blue Rush, Status and Blade (and creatine, BCAA’s & Myofusion Elite). We’ll see what the next few weeks brings. Hopefully I’ll be able to report back with some good results.
My compartment syndrome only allows me to run for 30 mins so it doesn’t matter if I eat breakfast is what I got from this. Can’t wait until I can get the surgery so I can go on long runs again.
The golden combo for me a couple of years ago When I got shredded AND gained muscle simultaneously was intermittent fasting (14-16hrs) with plenty of water and green tea, long duration low intensity cardio in the morning, and then finally weight training (my own bullshit program) sometime after my first and biggest meal (usually in the very late afternoon). Looking back I realise I was probably eating just above maintenance.
In fact, I’m doing this again starting today, except on my own slight tweak on Blaha’s 5×5 (“cutting” 3×5 version but adding weight as normal).
i do weight training in the morning, only when i have eaten a lot on the evening before.
Hi lee, I always do cardio in the morn on an empty stomach and have a protein shake mixed with porridge oats after is that a good thing to do or should I just stick with the protein? I use maxi muscle cyclone… Much appreciated:-)
If your looking to burn more belly fat, yes…do cardio on an empty stomach. Otherwise you are burning what you ate unless you wait a few hours for the food to digest and the carbohydrate intake. Post cardio though, one should not over eat, keep the intake to a point where your stomach feels satisfied, not full or bloated. Otherwise, it’s all for not.
If you are overweight you should do it empty stomach especially if fat loss is your main goal.
you don’t need food.. YES.. you maybe hungry BUT have enough stores to last that workout..
Yeah I always do weight training in the morning! Most the time on an empty stomach, i find that it personally doesn’t effect my gains etc.
Hell yea, I fast and then work out and do my cardio. Sure, I don’t have a lot of fuel to power my workouts, but I’m focusing on losing fat and getting heart healthy first.
I lost 40kg on cardio with eating in the morning. Not muscle, this post is idiotic and NOT accurate, thank God I never looked at this before jogging. Get your facts straight, unsubscribed…
I personally like to do both cardio and weight training on an empty stomach. My be about 10-20min or so warm up the treadmill followed by 90min to 2hrs of weight training. Since its on an empty stomach I take a pre workout to give me some energy and take BCAA’S intra workout to avoid burning too much muscle. I find this a great way to gain muscle while keeping my body fat low
Cardio in the morning absolutely must work for fat burn. When I was in the service we used to run a couple of miles every morning. At the time I hung out with this tall skinny guy, who would hit the clubs all night long, and I couldn’t keep up with him half the time. Well, he got out and came back for a visit six months later. I didn’ recognize him, he’d put on 150 lbs and was as rotund as you can be. If I hadn’t heard him speak, I’d have figured him for a complete stranger. He literally ballooned up without the exercise. Unreal.
I do both, get a shake before working out and feeling stronger in the morning!
I lift 3 times a week cardio the other 4 days, all on an empty stomach. I usually pop a fat burner before hand and sip on some bcaas during the workout. I prefer it like this because 1 the gym is empty in the morning, 2 I won’t procrastinate, and 3 by the time my day really gets started I forget I even trained. Strength is about the same once I got used to it, as long as I don’t wait too long to get to the gym the hunger doesn’t really kick in.
How pointless does it sound to eat now calories just so you can burn them. Dummmmmmb!!
First I’d like to say thx Lee I’ve been using a lot of your tips and getting results.. second I don’t know if I missed it some where but how do you target your sides and under your peks.. do you do declines or something else to hit those areas thx again Lee…Chris
by taking pre work out protine shake in the early morning…we can do weight training????? pls reply me dude..and in one of YOUR vedio you said that….in the early morning to do cardio..we should take tablets..to maintaine body in catabolic state…is doing cardio w/o taking that tablets is preferable????
I currently weigh 277lbs (down from 290lbs) and the reason I’ve been able to lose the weight over the last four weeks is because I do an hour of cardio M-F on an empty stomach. I hear people say you lose a lot of muscle doing cardio on an empty stomach, but in my case I find that to be false. After struggling through afternoon cardio sessions where I couldn’t even complete 50 minutes, I decided to give the cardio on an empty stomach routine a try and found it works for me.
On January 1st of this year I weighed 261.3 lbs and had a BMI of 42.1. I decided to change the way I eat and start walking. I decided to not eat after 8:30 PM and I don’t eat in the morning until after 10:30 AM. Every morning rain or shine I walk a 5K. Now, I don’t do it leisurely I try to walk pretty fast (well fast for me I’m only 5 feet 6 inches). It used to take an hour now it takes around 44 minutes. So far, I have lost 81 pounds (20 more to go) and have taken my BMI to 29.2. I have cervical stenosis so I have to do something low impact. Walking seems to work for me.
Say if you burn 1000 calories everyday by working out first things first in the morning on an empty stomach how long would it take to actually see results? I burn 500 calories in the morning and another 500 after school.
Great video-but I would have changed your dialogue slightly to say-I’ll give you two great reasons to do this and 1 reason this may not work for you. They way you originally say it-it’s like you’re saying OK 2 reasons to do it and 1 MAJOR reason NOT to do it!!! It’s almost like you’re contradicting yourself and at the same time giving people an excuse-not to do it.
Just a thought-not a criticism.
I’m not a morning person, but I I still set my alarm clock to wake up tomorrow morning and do it)
