Im a Male. My heart rate is 45 BPM, And my Waist-to-Hip Ratio was a 0.77.
Alright, here is a fitness test, which I’ve tested personally. You bound up stairs two at a time for as many floors as you can. I have friend who lives on the 9th floor of an apartment building. When I go visit him I take two steps straight to the 6th floor, after which I have to gear down to regular pace for the remaining three floors. When I stood up in his door for the first time he told me I should try camomile herb tea. When I asked him why, he said he’s never seen anybody so traumatized after a simple elevator ride to the 9th floor and camomile will do wonders for my nerves. When I told him I ran upstairs he said, “Forget camomile. You need a psychiatrist.”
Great video as usual. But I’ve got a question: I did 36 push-ups (good form) in 50 seconds and that was it, I couldn’t do a single one more. How do I count it? Should I go slower to do a higher count? (BTW I’m 69).
Thanx for this great Video, You have a beautiful body at this age..
I notice that you do your planks on your elbows. This I find much easier that then doing with full arm length.
Wow, i think you represent the kind of physique most guys would want to have…and you seem like a nice intelligent guy as well. Kudos and thanks for the video…
Nice tests. Do you still have the tables to send??? my mail arruzzo.marcos@ gmail.com. Thanks.
Hope you all enjoy the tests! Just to note that I would class comfortably touching the toes as a pass for the hamstring test, with palms to floor being ideal. If you can’t do one of these and want to fix that, your solution is in the description. Get working!
Handsome man, very difficult focusing on anything he is saying….is this the cure for any unpleasant feeling in the body…im cured!!! Sorry, he is just absolutely manly grrr. Yes i growled sorry…
I can’t touch the floor without lower back rounding. How are people keeping their back flat?
Well, if you’re a gymnast like me then we all know that we got all three. HAHAHA
I can fit my entire forearm in where the towel is, does that mean it’s really bad? I get a lot of hip pain
Thanks Tom. My squat isn’t great and I’ve just followed your hip flexibility video, which was great. However my knees don’t like going towards my toes…. how do I make this happen? Great videossuper clear! Thank you.
I ticked the three. But im lacking the full split like 35 cm.
This video is depressing. I am so far from touching my toes it’s not even funny anymore. I’m strong enough to do L-sits but I don’t do them because it hurts behind my knees.
Almost positive you get this all the time but…those feet of yours are quite sexy. With that aside, I have found these videos and your channel overall very positive and helpful. Your accent and calm demeanor make attempting some of these stretches so much more less frustrating. CHEERS!
A cant put my palm to the floor yet but I can touch my toes barely and can do everything else
I can do none, I am under flexible for my sport which is XC/track which normally people are not flexible.
I have top end flexibility in the squat position and the wall angel, but I can only get 2nd knuckle on the ground for the hammy stretch. I didn’t think improving flexibility was really possible to a noticeable extent at anything passed 18 years of age as I’ve not had any change sin my flexibility since then (although I’ve lost the ability to go palm over palm over the back with my hands), but maybe I’ve been living under a rock.
3/3 i can place my palms on the floor with my feet touching eachother ( slightly harder i think xd)
Btw weight doesnt mean anything in this. Im chubby and i can. Also never done any exercisw for flexibility
Hi Tom. I am intrested to know why are you so obsessed with flexability considering we have such a short time on this planet?
I have a Hard Time with the squad. I mean I can do it but it’s really hard. But i can do all of them.
I’m in my 50s and can do all 3, I train regularly, however I get some pretty intense hamstring shakes on palms to floor.
Tom, if you didn’t choose calisthenics, I think I could have made you into a top class 400m sprinter!
Mr brent plz don’t write on
Screen what u r saying Becoz it hides what u r doing actually
I did the test and I dont think I have it but I have a posture that looks like a apt, My lower back is curved in, my upper back is the opposite, and my head is Slouched forward.
In the wall angel you want to maintain contact hand to wall, but also elbow to wall Tom
One really underated joint is the wrist. I used to have the most inmobile wrist ever, and working on then allowed me to progress with planches, do my false grip for the ring muscle up, supinate my forearm to finally being able to do chin ups full range of motion, and in general overhead movements felt way more confortable.
Resting squat, yes, hands to the floor, no, only touch toes, wall angel, not really.
Coaching and correction is important, but being condescending isn’t a good quality in any partnership or team. Liked all of these tips! Thanks for sharing:)
If your in a certain age bracket, when people develop knee, hip, ankle problems, then a resting squat is a major issue
Hello Tom!
I’ve just discovered your YT Channel and it’s an amazing place for a guy like me who just begin BW training. So first, thanks for that.
By beginning BW, I knew I had to work on my flexibility and Mobility however I had to be honest I’m a bit lost in front of all the videos about flexibility and mobility on YT. What would you suggest for me (I’m currently a piece of wood in terms of flexibility)? Your follow along video, 15mn for beginner?
My goal is to obtain some strong skills like press handstand (so flexibility needed).
Thanks a lot for your time! Keep up the good work:)
Ps: you look a bit like Thomas Shelby ahah
seriously lacking wall angels and its from lat and chest side
Palms to the floor? Couldn‘t do that even as a kid. That will take me decades if ever.
Btw: Content and aesthetics of these clips are top notch in every regard.
As a physical therapist I take alot of stuff out of it for my patients.
can your back be rounded during the hamstring thing? I can get my palms down if my back rounds a bit. But that’s cheating I guess.
That hands touching floor is applicable only for straight back people and slightly tall..
As someone with chronic pain, I can’t tell you what miracles daily stretching does. It’s at the top of my pain management rituals. I do yoga everyday. You get stretching and strength building in one. I got to like a size 6-8 after a car accident, and I’m down to a 4 again. I didn’t change anything but doing yoga. Walking is so huge too though. Walking really helps your entire body. Just make sure you’re in a good posture. Straight back and neck, engage your abs, tilt the pelvis. I can do these three really easily, and I’m not bragging or anything, I’m just saying, it gets easy. I can bend my elbows and still flat palm the floor in a half bend with no effort whatsoever. I can do a great back bend too. I never had this range of motion before. It protects your body from injury as well. And you’ll be shocked at how strong you are. I am able to run, just through the stretching, breathing and strength training from yoga, and I’ve never been able to run far or fast before. It’s like a side effect. I’m not into pushing the esoteric side of yoga, I’m not into myself, but you can’t deny the physical results. Squats are a resting posture to me.
Thanks tom I broke my back wen was 13 and since doing the follow along I can put my hands down on floor so nice one again tom peace from northeast
I appreciate how organized all this is. Thanks! Gonna work on all of this, improving little by little
Definitely need to work on all three hahah thanks for reminding me I’m as flexible as an iron pipe, Tom
Hi Bro Sorry Do you have a calisthenic exercise for the side shoulders, posterior or back shoulders and upper, middle, lower trapezius and neck, thoracic and forearm, wrist and rotator cuff, lower back and flexibility exercise upper and all lower body?
Regarding hamstring flexibility, my is extremely poor, to the point that I cant sit on the floor with my legs straight out in front of me, the thing is whatever I try to stretch for hinge with straight or almost straight legs I get a massive nerve tingling in my calves and knees, that sensation kicks in way before I feel any hamstring stretch. do you have any advice? and love your content!:)
The video does not answer the question: ‘how flexible do you need to be?’ I think it depends on your goal. If you want to be a fast runner, you need a bit of spring in your tendons and muscles for efficiency. But if you want to be a fast swimmer, then flexible ankles will help. If however you want to be a fast triathlete, the answer is not so easy.
I knew I could not do the palms to the floor yet, as its something I’ve been working on. I was surprised I could not do the wall angel though! Time to add shoulder flexibility to things I’m working on!
Hi Tom,
Thanks for thise tip.
Can you share a routine/exercice to follow to get more flex on those 3.
Thanks
I can squat, and I can touch my toes (still working on hamstrings flexibility), but my worst mobility problem is overhead mobility, I just can’t touch the wall, and I think it’s nearly related to the bad posture (nerd neck and rounded shoulders) that I’ve been struggling to fix, I’ve been following some of your routines, and made some improvements but I still have a long way to go
Hey man! Totally hooked on your channel and vids! Was looking for vids on how to get my flexibility back and learn to do handstands, and have been binging on your channel for two days now. Love your work, and thank you for sharing your tips and advice! Can’t wait to get started tonight!
I can do a squat, I am close to having my palms to the floor and for the last one my shoulder rotation sucks and I can’t get my elbow and back of my hand both in the wall while making a 90 degree angle
All three! Am following the handstand drills you have suggested. Thank you for all the information.
Thanks for this breakdown. Gives me great confidence in the trainers I’ve been supported by in the last couple of years.
I needed this reassurance:). I can’t do pancake or a split, so I classes myself as very inflexible and hated it
3/3
And thanks to your hamstrings routine I was able to touch the floor! Took about a month of short session before going to bed. (I started from touching toes).
Hey, where do you place your feet in the 3rd excersise? I cant even bring my lower back to the wall when my heels are touching the wall as well… Have to put them a bit further away like around 1 hand distance. Whats your advice?
1/3.. I seem to naturally be able to squat without any kind of discomfort for long amounts of time, I can sit in or move about in a squat position, I find this strange though because the rest of my body is so stiff and NOT flexible it’s scary.. shoulder and hamstrings give very little movement and it’s extremely uncomfortable (as my whole body seems to be lol) just unsure why a squat would feel so easy? Either way I have some serious work to do to improve from where I’m at right now!
You really have to be careful stretching your hamstrings while bending over like that. Iv pulled my back out a few times doing it and I’ve been told by physiotherapists and doctors that it is the worst way to stretch your hamstrings and that the safest way to stretch them is by lying on the floor and pulling your foot towards you putting less stress on your back.
Hey Tom thanks for all your content. I’ve been training my flexibility and mobility the past two months with your video and now I’ve got nice improvements on my overheard shoulder mobility and my hamstring flexibility. And also a very good correction to my APT.
Thanksss !
Sorry for my English I’m French .
OK this is really boosting my confidence: I totally got 1 and 3 in the bag and I’m maybe 80% on the hamstrings. Not bad for a dude past 40! This year or next year it’s gonna be palms to the floor. Thanks man.
I can do the wall angel and hands to floor really easily, but the squat gives me trouble sometimes. I find I have to put my feet so wide in order to balance and not tip backwards, I wonder if it’s automatically more challenging for women
Yikes, not even close, not one for me, time to start stretching
Great video! This is something to work toward. I love your stretch/flex videos.
Great advise. Something to keep in mind when using a personal trainer. Weird to think some are late all the time when they are teaching you to be accountable haha
My Squat is fantastic. Hamstrings/hands to the floor are god awful. Wall angels? Wall slides? I can do that alright. Have a hard time keeping my lower back to the wall, tho.
I dont get the last exercise. What has to be in contact with the wall during the whole moment just the hands??? I dont know if im doing it right.
Thanks to your free Bodyweight worrier flexibility & Follow along vids I have better range of motion Hamstrings chest to thighs & pancake about halfway. I decided to try front splits & in three weeks I can almost touch the ground. I’m so grateful for your help Tom.
P.s Tom have ever over trained pancake exercise & got the opposite response?
i can do #2 and #3. i’ve been struggling with squats for like two years now. your total body follow along routine helped me achive both other exercises, i used to be completely stiff. however, I’m still on my road to the full squat. your videos really helped and continue helping me tho! <3
3/3 so really happy with that:)
I found that just implementing flexibility into your daily life as opposed to a routine can be very effective.
If I’m gaming or watching tv I’ll sit in a deep squat and overtime I’ve built up to 15 minute intervals, likewise daily attempts at touching my toes got me to being able to touch palms to floor without any knee bending within 8 months.
Just consistency is all:)
My hip is definitely flexible enough for the squat but my ankle has no flexibility. It’s really annoying cuz there’s not even much i can do, as not even doctors were able to fix it, and it’s been an issue since kid. Then it was worse, but it has just locked out in flexibility and hasn’t changed in years:(
Got any questions about anterior pelvic tilt or anything else fitness related? Feel free to comment down below:)
As a fitness coach myself, I completely agree, well done for sharing this helpful info x
These 4 questions are so helpful in finding a personal trainer, thank you for this!
This is great advice. I never hired a personal trainer but I learned a lot. Great video as always!
These tips and reminders were super useful! Thanks for letting us know!
Great advise for those that are looking to hire a personal trainer. Thanks for sharing, cheers!
Great video. I use these tests when doing a work up of new patients before I adjust them. It’s great to get a functional/flexibility assessment, including a full NMS workup on patients just in case there is some thing underlying that might need to be referred out.
I couldn’t agree more with this video! It doesn’t help that a lot of these personal trainers get a cheap certification with no experience or anything
Really useful info for a time when people are starting to come back out of quarantine and get back into shape lol
Great, concise list! I didn’t know to look for some of these things before using a trainer, but thankfully he checked most of these boxes.
Really interesting insights. Something to definitely keep in mind. I’ve never hired a trainer. I enjoy dance, so that’s been my main source of exercise.
thank you so much for this detailed self test, so I exactly have core stability problem and hip flexor shortness problem:D
My understanding when you do this test is that you passively abduct and then extend the leg and then lower the leg. If you review the test in Magee, slight extension is important to allow the ITB to pass over the greater trochanter. Perhaps that is what Jason is referring to in his comment.
lol… this reminds me of all the gym bro advice I got when I started working out
Have been recently practicing the wall angel to better my posture
Very first exercise when conducting a fitness assessment: overhead squat.. Yeah OK next video?
not sure if there’s much value in this; all we saw was someone with great mobility doing everything perfectly. I would like to see someone with restrictions and how to correct these! or describe possible / common mobility restrictions and how to make improvements
Is there a video about what corrective exercises that she can do for these assessments?
where is the posterior view for the over head squat assessment?
we have to know if she has ass-ymmetrical leaning problem
So for a person with no tightness will produce what kind of movement or what do we see in a negative result?
Such good content..perhaps consider voice over to improve the audio
Hey, when are more of these videos coming out?
Would you advise warming up before doing these and the other assessment you have made? Also, would you do this on the day you meet the client? Keep up the good work
Thank you! Glad I discovered your podcast and videos, these are great
My orthopedist must be a moron. I am SO clearly having a tfl issue. Thank you internet.
Hmm. My shin is longer than my arm. Hand to floor doesn’t work.
lmao its not for the tfl or itb… and you cant atually stretch the itb dude… it actually tests blocking from an anterior rotated pelvis
Thanks for the video. A recent research shows that Ober’s test targets the medium gluteus so probably is better to assess that then we thought in the past.
I think I may have been taught an incorrect version of this test. We just slowly slide the hand down to the ankle. If the knee doesn’t drop to the lower knee it’s a positive.
He came at us with the Tony Perkins from Heavyweights intro haha ♂️

Oh,you sound so smart. It’s all bullshit. The PT’s I saw came up with all the wrong excercises and made my condition worse.

Wouldn’t knee flexion lengthen the rectus femoris when the knee is bent since it’s a knee extender? You said shorten…
I need help.
How does overactive/tight Bicep Femoris (short head) and Tensor Fascia Latae cause:
The feet to turn out.
The knees to move inward.
The knees to move outward.
The feet to flatten.
I’m looking at the NASM overhead squat solutions table and I don’t understand. Please help me Dr.B2.
This is the link to the NASM OH squat table:

I don’t know why but this guy is too touchy feely for my liking. If I were the patient, I would resent the unnecessary touching and handling. I understand he is trying to demonstrate something but for me that would be more motivation to take my patient into consideration and demonstrate professionalism with their bodies.
I recently discovered that my right TFL is so tender it hurts to touch. The most lateral muscles are generally cramped from neck to foot, including the fibulars that wrap under the ankle, the glutes and my neck. I’ve had neck aches so extreme my face went numb or got nauseated to the point of vomiting repeatedly. I don’t know what kind of professional would be most likely to tease out the genesis of this syndrome. I went to a physio briefly for a sport MCL injury 2 years ago, but didn’t take time to bring this up because it costs a king’s ransom and I thought I could solve it on my own. At $60-120/hour I can’t afford to see someone that fails to bring resolution.
at 2:21 I think you meant to say that knee flexion lengthens the rectus femoris, not shortens it
testing ability to adduct on one side and, necessarily, the ability to abduct on the opposite side. not all about tfl.
Looking at her overhead squat, I’d say she lacks thoracic extention.
Love the info, but you incorrectly stated rectus femoris instead of biceps femoris as pulling the leg up if you set up with too much knee flexion.
2:20 you mean lengthening the rec fem? you’re forgiven cause you’re awesome:)
This is a really awkward one with heavier patient’s I find.
Fantastic video thanks! It’s better than the TFL test I’ve been using. Im going to start using this with my clients.

What if one experiences pain staring at 90 degrees and higher?
This may be a silly question, but what would you recommend if your hand cannot cover the span from the ASIS to the PSIS?
…..
Even if you practice rotator cuff before you workout, It is impossible to avoid shoulder pain forever. However, having nice posture helps to reduce risk of injuries and also improves efficiency of workout.
You can have inflammation between rotator cuff tendon and acromion If you don’t pack your scapula well. Even elite athletes have shoulder impingement. So, practicing shoulder and scapula should be beneficial for avoiding it. Also, having nice form of movements should be essential to work out consistently.
There are a lot of mobility workouts. You should test what works for you and improve shoulder mobility. However, If you don’t know what is a root cause for shoulder pain, hiring an licensed physical therapist should be needed.
I need help! My TFL hurts so much, that even I can’t shot a ball. Any exercise to help with it?
Hey.. the way of explaining is really good.. but please make your app free of cost
Hey Deanna Lewis,
That does make more sense, and I did not review Magee before making this video… so my apologies for not addressing any points that differ from this foundational text. My issue with the thought that we must move around the ITB, is that the ITB is truly not a band, but a sheath especially proximally. Infact the origin of this structure spans from TFL, to Iliac Crest to Glute Max. In essence, the ITB is always over the greater trochanter.
Sincerely,
B2
Hey, Brent!
I attended one of your NASM workshops back in July in Manassas, VA. I just wanted to say that I have never been so inspired as a trainer since that day. The moment I left your workshop, I have been obsessed with functional anatomy and am in the process of becoming a CES through NASM. Thank you kindly for these informational videos, and, above all, your contagious passion.
P.S. I just bought your book!
3/3.
The relax squat is a norm for most asians.
Trying to get the side splits.
Well looks like I’m onto the hamstring flexibility routine
I found that when I flex my abs, I am able to pass the test and my foot is able to fully go down to the ground. However when I do not flex my abs I fail the test. What does this signify?
Hey Brent, I’ve been addicted to all your videos and articles on your website. Thanks for sharing. I am a bit puzzled because my overhead squat assessment revealed an anterior pelvic tilt. However, during the Thomas test, Ely Test and Ober’s test my range of motion was good. I had another trainer help me out. We performed the test multiple times so I am assuming we did them right. Is it possible for all these muscles to have a decent amount of length and it’s just my abdominal complex and my glute weakness that are mainly responsible for the shift. The only muscles that do feel tight are my adductors. When I’m stretching I notice my right adductor brevis and longus feeling the tightest. My right rectus femoris was just the slightest bit tighter that my left as well but barely. Could those tight muscles alone be the culprit? I’d love if you came to CA for a workshop! Happy New Year.
-Daniel
I found this video to be quite brilliant. I just wanted to ask, how do we check if it’s not our weak glutes/hamstrings causing the tilt? And secondly, would it be possible to contact you through email?
3/3! Thanks to you and Gabo Saturno, my flexibility and mobility have improved decently
Best video I’ve found on this topic! Thank you so much for explaining it clearly with all the details.
It looks like that I have anterior pelvic tilt but I do not experience any pain. Does still mean that I do have anterior pelvic tilt
I don’t have anterior pelvic tilt based on the test but, my hip flexors and lower back have been killing me. My hip flexors feel short and sitting all day makes them so tight. Stretching them doesn’t make it feel better
Just one! I will check your videos to improve my flexibility on the 2nd and 3rd exercise!
I did the side one when you bring the arm up I could touch the other arm but when I bring it up in front I can’t bring it past my head is it because my right shoulder is rounded because I also notice that the right arm is longer
It would be good to get some non athletic patient to demo a negative reaction. But very concise vids. Thanks
His left arm is longer then his right are, it is only me or any one els noticed it..
What would I do without you! my quarantine salvation!!
que haría sin ustedes! mi salvedad de cuarentena. Gracias
I’m currently studying for my exams, and you are my hero! Explained easy and good, thanks!
hello well done works but some comments first put some pdf about the whole test explanations then once you find the problem would be great to introduce some treatment techniques for each part too..thanks
God bless
While the new videos typically have too loud music, the production value has increased a lot, thanks for all the work you’ve done guys!

I only have pain when bending elbow aswell. Been struggling with impingement for 3 years and now i have full range of motion. Only hurts when doing this with bent elbow
Ok…I searched “pain arc” hoping I would find the op from naruto…but i found this instead
I’m not sure that it is always over the greater troch. My understanding is that the ITB passing over the troch is a common cause of external snapping hip syndrome.
Nice. What is the exercise to get relief?I find onlyvideo about pain.
This video is awsome! Not only this but also all of ur videos in Physiotutors are helpful to me. I’m preparing a test which include these tests! Thanks to Physiotutors
ok I have the glenohumeral painful arc for over a year on my left shoulder from lifting heavy in the gym. I did some physical therapy and I stopped almost all heavy shoulder training and also incline bench press and I took some medication but the pain is not going away not even1% although I took 50 days rest (no exercises at all except walking).
