Awesome stuff!
Question: Is it recommendable to do the split squat in a leg changing way, i.e. left/ right/ left/ right,… so in a kind of walking way? Because at least to me it fatigues also the rear leg if I work out the front leg by split squats.
Hello dr.
I’m a patient of m.s so nowadays facing problem in balance n walking
So what to do
Boy, is that helpful… I load hay on my Mule in the barn and the uneven hay really almost throws me down..
My foot hit my while my foot went into my pants on the scortpio and it scared the shit outa me because it felt like someone grabbed me lmao
Good video. Started with basic stuff, then more advanced. I subscribed.:-D
How much chances and amount of recovery can be expected in a TBI, Now able to walk but problems with balance and strength.
i don’t even play hockey i’m a figure skater but i stayed for Kevin
Thanks Jens!!!! Two things amaze me: how much I’ve learned and how much more there is to learn.
dont you mind giving foreigner like me a subtitle to understand how this exercise does better?
Hi Doc! Does this help with my concern? I had ankle and fibula surgery and my doctor cleared me that I could walk freely. However I am having problems with walking properly again…:( Do you also have a video on how to walk properly again after a surgery? Thanks a lot.:)
I wish I had a guy like this in high school or college. Good stuff
I’ve had MS for 15 years. I honestly couldn’t manage standing on one foot.
I just found this video. Hopefully after I try it more than once it will improve.
thanks a lot for sharing:)
Hi Jens, a question. When you really practicing or working on a tune, do you use any effects. What is you advice?
Extremely informative video that combines visual aids, outstanding oral communication, biophysiology knowledge and insight into hockey playing athletics. Because this video is so informative and useful, I’ve passed it along to some of my beer league buddies.
Wow, you jam packed a lot of stuff in to this video! My favorite one of the exercises was actually the first one. I need to do that more. This week I’ve been working a bit on doing the same thing but with spread triads, after watching a video Rick Beato posted on them. What I found is really hard is playing through the diatonic chords in the cycle of 4ths, so you start on a different string every other time.
So much stuff to work on!
hi. the subtitles make it so i cant see you doing the exercises
for an extremely self-centered silver lining, this quarantine can do wonders for one’s chops:)
I have ataxia and my balance is not too good. So these exercises are great
Possibly the best technique related video ever. The alternate picking 4 tone arpeggios is a winner for me. Made me realized how much I tend to play in one position and how it affects the overall choice of notes and feel of solo. Then second favorite is descendiing triad picking.
Ive just did the standing close together stance eyes closed neck moving. I shake a little but I think with doing this everyday 1-2x 1min would get me far soon. Didnt expect I would shake haha… I hope it will strengthen my ankles and prevent ankle injuries in the future. Its fun, takes little time and can prevent lots of pain. Thanks dr jo, I will update 4-6 wks later!
Long live Doctor Jo! You’ve been a great help to me. I’ve asked you questions on a few occasions in some of your other videos and you are very thoughtful and timely in your responses. Thank you! Are these exercises appropriate for an ACL deficient knee that also had 80% of the posterior horn removed? I find these very difficult to do, just as walking without a cane is difficult, but somehow I know that my body wants/needs them. I’m 9 weeks out from surgery btw. Good fortune to you Dr. and happy holidays!
Thank you for your valuable information and for sharing ✌ ✨
Thanks again Jens for your GENIUS!!! I must admit back in the day I was into Theory, but got more into improvising and letting my ears guide me as opposed to the scientific aspect of music. But you’ve opened my eyes once again to the necessity of knowing the notes, where they fit, and the relationship between them. This lesson is greatly appreciated.
This will be great to regain strength in the ankle I broke almost three months ago. I was nonweight bearing for six weeks, then only 50% for another two weeks, and wore a surgical boot until a couple of weeks ago. I just finished six weeks of PT, but need to maintain an exercise regimen at home, and your videos are very helpful for that. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. You are an excellent instructor!
Ok so this question is not going to be anything about the things in this video, but it would be awesome, if you could answer!
When working something out by ear, let’s say a melody. What is the ‘correct’ or maybe easiest way to work it out? For me for example, I relate every note to the root note (chord) that is still in my head from when the piece started(usually). But I heard Pat metheny say, that he thinks of every note ‘against’ the specific chord in that bar. Which means, let’s assume we are playing a 1 6 2 5 in C and the chord change would be inbetween the melody playing a C to D
which essentially means, that we were playing a C against the Cmaj7 chord and then the D against Am7. But My head won’t think of the D as being played against Amin7, it will still think as the D played against a cmaj7, espacially if the am7 is an inversion.
another thing, when a melody is being olayed, do you think of the melody in intervalls? because I can only do that on the first note. When the melody for examp. does C F G, I can hear the the 4th but then hearing the whole tone from F to G is just impossible, I can only hear against the root note.
This is where I don’t really understand how I am supposed to think of the melody, when playing by ear. I always go back to my intuition.
this ended up being quiet long, but it has been on my mind for so long now.
Hey Doc I need to learn to balance better, is there any techniques or strengthening exercises that will help me tremendously, I’m a framer.
I hope its okay to ask this, but I just gotmy Sonya 7 iii in. I been getting familiar with it I’m using hlg3 with bt2020 gamma with kit lens. Then I use gamma assist to put in camera out hlg to rec709.
Just wondering what you think of those settings. Or if you know of better. Thanks for your content as always its superb level.
Thanks doc jo. May i ask youabout face problem? Its when i got stroke. And my face is imbalance like i cant smile right. Help pls.
Dr. Jo this is wonderful!! thank you! I will be using this in my pilates classes. Always looking for balance exercises to incorporate into my routines
Fine exercises, even for an old hobby crack like me. Just did it first time although I wanted to start aleeady in January 1st. Now corona quarantine is the reason why I started in our basement finally. Best regards from Austria!
this was a super nice lesson/ almost everything you do need to know:-)
I’m also physical therapist n I m extremely impressed by ur work good job Dr jo
Hey man, just wanted to say that your videos are well thought out, informative, and useful. You clearly know what you’re talking about and you explain everything in perfect detail. Keep it up!
Thanks for this! Great material to work on this weekend. I’ve had the privilege of seeing Pat Martino numerous times at Chris’s Jazz Cafe in Philly. I typically watch his right hand the entire set; another example of a player who has mastered his picking technique.
Good evening madam, I’m suffering from muscular attrophy. can u please explain me some exercise? I can’t walk properly. while walking I can’t control myself and falling down. I can’t control my balance while walking. so, please help me by explaining some exercises. thank you madam
Don’t know about you guys but I’m still workin’ thru this… this is a ton of stuff. It took me 3 tries of working through the first example before I realised just how much I could get out of this. This is one of those lessons one will come back to again and again. I’m goin’ to spend a month on this. How about a few links to Molly Tuttle and Andy Wood?
Hey dr i have flat feet can i use the same protocol as this what would change if not?
Hey guys, I’ve tried emailing the both of you but the emails could not be delivered. I can’t seem to find any information on when and how to incorporate the hockey skills into the program. I purchased the men’s league annihilation a couple of weeks ago and was hoping to start incorporating the shooting/stick handling drills into the program.
Another thing, do you guys plan on developing an app for the program? The layout seems a little archaic for the year 2020 even though you deem it to be “mobile friendly”
I hope that you take this feedback and look to improve your program in the near future. When I am paying $150 for a program, I expect it to be top notch.
I look forward to hearing back, take care
I have suspected menieres disease with severe vertigo or loss of balance can this exercise helpful to me
i liked the video very much. It was really helpful and interesting. (I think there may be a problem with the music notation and tab for the D# dim chord.)
Thanks for that Sir, so when we start from the 3rd of the half diminished we get a minor 7, thn from the 3rd of a dominant 7 we get a half diminished, thn from 3rd of a minor 7 we get a major 7, thn from the 3rd of a major 7 we get a minor 7 arpeggios am i right
Will this help if i have a fear of falling off treadmill when walking or running on it???
doctor.. will you suggest me a few good exercises as i have spinal surgery and have not recovered from right foot drop.
Hi Doctor Jo, I was wondering if I need to do cardio before doing yours stretching exercises?
Really helped my balance and skating thanks for this:D
Edit: thank you so much for the like keep up the good work
I have used alt picking for 10 years. Now I use economy picking and it help me play Jazz a lot.
But… I don’t skate at home. 😉
Joking aside though No.1 actually hurts. Good stuff.
Hey coach I’m going into bantam next season I was wondering if there is any exercises I can do to prevent getting injured in the hitting. I’m very small compared to the second years and my own age is there anything I can do to help next year.
Love the exercises I’m ready to break into the ice skating rink and start playing again great video
Great lesson.Thank you Jens. Those triads in G melodic minor excercise.. can be used over C major diatonic chords as well?

Interesting exercises for me, I have SCI C3/C4. I have a big problem with a balance when I try to walk. Thanks for an inspiration.
Could you do any lessons on any jazz standards? Like the chords to Stella By Starlight?
thank you for informing your good exercise way. it looks very simple. but it is difficult for me…haha. i will try to do this and get a good balance body. thank you
with holding hands it can not perfect but I can do it. Even with one hand. the problem starts with no holding.
Kindly check the tab for D #min in exercise 3 (should this not be 7 8 5 7) and Dm in exercise 4 (should this not be 10 10 12)?
I have an 80 year old client I’m currently looking for new balance exercises for. Thanks for some great ideas!
will this help with balance for someone that had hip replacement over a year ago
With the T stand, do you rotate between each leg per rep? Or do you do 10 on one leg then 10 on the other?
Very good video, Thank you. Dr. Jo, I have been a stroke patient for 15 years. I can not stand with a single leg, and I can’t stand in an open space without support. I can’t walk, but I haven’t stop working out daily. I have tried many programs, but they are too advanced for me. I’m looking for something I can do with a little bit challenges. Would this program helps? Thanks.
hello doctor, I have bunion toes in both legs by birth, that why I struggle a lot while a simple balancing, can you suggest me something for it, thanks in advance
In the split squat you show the forward foot has foot ahead of the toes. Question. Should the knee be behind the toes to make the move a bit harder? Or does it not matter? Curious.
Okay, I when to my Neurosurgeon and he said no surgery, I’m still doing my stretches from your video. He said I must continue without fail to do them. <3 Now I'm going to use your advice to work on my balance and walk.
i love your channel. have you ever played an extended range guitar? like an 8 string (with either extra low or high strings)? if so, what did you think?
thank you dr jo
can i asked about mind gait therapy after total hip replacement
i am 40 year complain form limping since childhood due to perthes disease
hi have femur ostomy since 28 year as ttt of perthes
I’ve been doing the tandem balance. I’m having trouble balancing when the weight is on my right foot. I tend to wobble more or lose my balance. With the left I seem to stay pretty steady. I don’t know if my ankle muscles are weaker on my right leg. You would think I’d have more trouble with my left since I’m right handed. Although, I don’t know if the left and right principle applies to the feet as well. Thank you for your instructions.
Thanks guys. I’ve been looking for this kind of thing. I just checked out your site and there is a ton of great vids on strength training. Thanks!!
This is fantastic! I think I’ll become a much better player by practicing this every day. Thank you so much for this video! I think especially the one not per string arpeggios will help me, because I have been struggling with my picking when moving between strings
Thank you so much for this walking exercises, I found out that I loose balance when I walk and swayed side to side and I also get cramps on my leg, so if I may ask, incase I practice this daily will I gain balance when I walk and also will I have a much more smother walking? Bcuz I walk alot and I’m beginning to find it hard to walk now, due to the problems listed above, thank u for listening.
Will be expecting your reply, any tips or exercises to do would help alot…
Bye.
Most falls occur, in new areastepping down from curve to road. Any suggestion to avoid this fall.
I have gone through cervical surgery after which I feel Imbalance while walking.
please suggest some exercises
@AskDoctorJo
Please tell me you don’t play soccer?! If so, I think I’m in LOVE.
Is this exercise just meant for ankles or for knees also??? I have a knee injury which is why I am asking.
Hey! Could we just do all of these together, like a very light workout or are they made to be done separately?
and these exercises also strengthen your ankle aswell, right?
I have post concussion syndrome, will this help with the lack of spatial awareness and dizziness?
what if i can’t do these exercises? i’m 22 and none of these i can do it, when i do it i just feel i will feel down? even with the first exercises. what should i do
Beautiful! I have a client who currently has balance issues. Thank you!
I am no expert, learned one thing, if you need to express your self, you should,
You have one of the most intelligent, yet tasteful music channels on YouTube. Thanks so much for your amazing lessons! Can’t wait to practice these all weekend.

Thanks for the information…Love from India..stay blessed..
Thanks for the great tips l will definitely start using them in my weekly routine
Dr Joe. I had a stroke. Do you have any pointers on climbing stairs without a railing to hold onto. I’m finding more and more of stairs out there without hand railings and I can’t climb them because I don’t have the balance or strength. Thanks. Steve
Is this more useful during the ice season? is it useful in the off-season?
Happy for you, wish I had the courage to change my strings soon.
Mam doctor told me that I have disequilibrium issue will this exercise help me.
@AskDoctorJo
Damm!!!! I’m a LW, well I wish I knew you personally so we could play together:/
Silly question, 62 how I grew up, my simple insight, no one left.
I have been watching some of your videos for a while now, in March of last year, i was diagnosed with a disease called Machado Joseph Disease, this disease can effect your balancing, and can make walking even hard to do… but this balancing video has improved my balancing so much, i do these exercises twice a day, so i’d like to say thank you for your videos. you have given me sooo much hope, that i can accomplish anything that life throws at me!
Yes! And try to make it harder as it gets easier for you, like move your arms around to throw you off balance!
I’m 23 but I had half of my cerebellum removed when I was 13. My balance basically allows me to walk unassisted, but not much else, so I’m going to try some at-home rehab to hopefully increase my balance somewhat so I can have more success with the pilates program I’m trying. I’m not sure how much it’ll help since it’s a neural thing vs just a physical issue, but it’s worth a shot. Thank you for the simple video and progression:) Wish me luck!
On this first day of Winter, here are some simple exercises to improve your balance in preparation for all those icy sidewalks to come!
Very helpfull. Please add how much time for each exercise. Thanks
The integration of skills here is so cool looks like smarter practice!
Also, love the nod to bluegrass. Strangely, I found jazz through bluegrass, thanks to David Grisman’s concoction of musical styles.
Thanks for an interesting anduseful vidoe Jens, and also for the PDF. If I might just add, this is the first of your videos I’ve seen in a while, and the quality has really improved (the content has always been great though…:) )
Love this just if your camera was a little further back your narration would maybe not block view of feet (to see your exact stance).
Hi Jens, in the E harmonic minor should the notes in the D# dim arpeggio be D#, A natural C and F#?
Always happy to learn an exercise that helps you with multiple facets of your playing. From the closeups it looks like you play with a pretty thick pick true?

I watched Steve Morse alternate picking arps the other day on Troy Grady’s page. Now you’re alternate picking arps, too and I realized just now trying to do it how much I have relied on sweeping to play arps. Alternate picking one-note-per string is NOT easy. I suck at it! Time to practice. A lot! 😉 Great lesson, Jens!
jens larsen i enjoy your content a lot…can you plz make a video on how to start jazz..from a intermediate guitarist who wants to get to jazz..i find myself in a sea of information with no boat to ride on…
How to make my knees strong because from my knee little sound comes,us there any way to remove that sound permanently and scared of doing exercises.
@AskDoctorJo R you left handed? I see you’re supinating, do you have a high arch?
Higher technique is definitely important to more styles like Jazz! Awesome work as always!
