Hey Toni! How often do you eat processed sugars now. I’m enjoying eating clean and I don’t necessarily crave processed sugars. But I do love me some ferrero Roche’s. I’m just afraid if I have it once, I will revert back to a pumpkin.
“Nicole is here, her DOCTOR JUST WARNED HER SHE’S PRE-DIABETIC”
Audience starts clapping
Drink lemon water in the morning for breakfast, or a smoothie with almond milk, or ice water with a cap of apple cider vinegar with mothers
you re wrong. The only way to stop hunger is with sugar. Hunger ocurs when your glucose levels are low. Glucose fuel is sugar. You stupid doctors whant to hide this for your convenience.
the best pop is No pop. Carbonated water has carbonic acid in it carbonic acid leaches minerals from the teeth it is also very hard into your digestive system, it also leaches calcium from the body. Also carbonic acid is acidic. most pop has a rating of 2 on the acidic scale where 7 is alkaline. also anything in aluminum can leeches aluminum, so not good for the body.
Couple things. There are different types of addiction, or addiction like traps. A type 1 addiction is as you described, it’s a substance or behaviour that produces a rewarding feeling, which triggers an unbalanced desire to reproduce the behaviour that delivered the reward, People with lots of hobbies are less likely to fall into this trap, because they have strong competing desires, so their motivation remains balanced. A type II addiction, however, is the type seen with substances like nicotine and cocaine… these substances short circuit the “produces a rewarding feeling” and directly triggers the neural circuits that create the desire to repeat the behaviour. This allows an addiction to form to something that’s not even pleasurable or enjoyable, and it’s very hard to break, because unlike the “I need” of a type I, the person doesn’t feel like they need the thing… they WANT it. A type III is not so much an addiction, but behaves that way, and can be caused by dietary traps, like caffeine intake. I had to intervene with a persons young cat, she was no longer producing lactase, but was being given milk, giving her diarrhoea, causing dehydration, leading to her beg for more milk. This is “addiction-like” because there’s usually not an emotional investment in remaining in the trap.
Paradoxical starvation (the “obesity epidemic”) is a type III that is caused by giving the body lots of “energy” intake, but without the means to actually use the energy. One major cause of this is depletion of magnesium from our soils, so even if a person believes they are eating right, following all the best advice, they may still fall into the majority of our populations who are magnesium deficient. Here’s the kicker: for every sugar molecule you wish to burn for fuel, you need a magnesium atom in the process, and it has to be in the right place, and available. If you consume more sugar molecules (in their various forms) than magnesium atoms, magnesium concentrations will drop… half as much magnesium means it will take twice as long to bump into an atom for the reaction to occur, causing a bottle neck. Cravings for energy can cause an increase in sugars intake, so there is more of it looking for the magnesium, speeding up the number of reactions (and thus, available energy) at the cost of burning through remaining magnesium. Unusable sugars have nowhere else to go, but storage. The person becomes paradoxically starving, as they are carrying around plenty of food that their body just can’t convert to energy. Eventually, the body’s messaging system saying “consume the sugar!” gets turned down by cells saying “shut up, I heard you” which is insulin insensitivity, becoming type II diabetes. So, magnesium intake as to be scaled with sugar intake (or accurately, sugar use) and while many people will attempt to achieve this by halting sugar intake until magnesium can recover, this process can be assisted greatly by addressing the magnesium depletion with supplements, around 200mg multiple times a day for a couple weeks (always wait for one to clear the stomach before taking another!) before reducing to a normal maintenance level.
How can you control sugar, carb and everything bad for you cravings during PMS time??!?
Banaba going to try this as a supplement. Thanks for all the tips.
Why would you compare sweetened oatmeal to ice cream to make the point that the ice cream is the less destructive choice? The point is to not choose either. If you want oatmeal, choose steel cut rolled oats that are not instant. That beats ice cream under any circumstances.
I JUST CUT OUT SUGAR and decreased my carb intake. I definitely felt a withdrawal. I was so fatigued the first week but now I feel great. I have more energy than ever!! For the past 20 years, I’ve been teaching people how to heal their body naturally. I must say this is an excellent video. I agree 100% with the message you’re trying to get across to your viewers. Kudos!
Nice video, great to help people reduce their sugar intake! Thanks for helping!
Idk everytime i buy any food like chocolates or chips i binge it. Thats why i dont buy unhealthy snacks, because i will 100% only eat that food when im hungry and its available.
How do you get yourself to like those foods? I’ll make oatmeal and be like “I’m gonna be so healthy blah blah” and then I get disgusted 2 bites into it and throw it away.
Thank you for all the good advice! Especially for the info about fermented foods… I did not know that helped with sugar cravings!
It’s So neat that you posted this video because I JUST started no bread and very Low sugar lifestyle because I need healing in my body from yeast overgrowth and bacteria. I have started by cutting out all sweets and fruit just to jumpstart my sugar addiction deliverance. I have been eating nuts for breakfast, almond butter, or I fast brkfst. Eating more keto salads. It has been very helpful so far! Thanks for this boost of encouragement!
There’s good information in these videos about why you should cut things out but I really wish she would give good realistic options. Like if someone if craving something like Oreos swapping that out for a yam with pumpkin spice…. that’s just not gonna happen lol when I’m craving something really sugary I’ll have some dark chocolate bark or you can make a processed-sugar free fresh fruit sorbet at home. Or there’s plenty of healthy delicious brownie recipes online.
this makes so much sense for kids:) I’ve always thought that restricting sugary foods because they’re “bad” means that they’ll go crazy when they have the opportunity to make their own choices. growing up I was taught that any food is fine in moderation. i thought that was helpful:)
Fun fact from a type 1 diabetic: all carbs are sugar aka glucose, the body needs sugar to survive and breaks down carbs (even proteins via glycogenolysis, and fats via gluconeogenesis) into glucose so every cell in your body can have energy. Please break the stereotype and classify that you are speaking of type 2 diabetes at the end of the video. Type 1 is an autoimmune disease that is not developed by too much sugar intake etc.:)
I have cut sugar for so far a week and I feel so good. I had very steady energy for the past week. So when I had one honey glazed donut which I made by myself I couldn’t even take another bite and since then I have never eaten a donut or any sugar sweet ever
Well I hope so!
Notes
#1:warm drinks
#2:sweet spices (Ceylon cinnamon)
#3:Stevia (sugar alternative)
#4:Completely cut out processed fruit juice
#5:Completely cut out soda
(You can make ur own “soda” by using soda stream and adding some flavor like green tea, lemon or juice)
#6:low fat=more sugar
#7: sweet potatoes with sweet spices
#8: Avoid simple carbs (f.e. white flour)
#9:Is it a habit or a crave?-Pay attention to triggers (situations where you start craving sugar).
Side note: We don‘t need sugar. And she only refers to processed sugar (not fruits etc.).
Also give it time, you’re gonna feel weird at first.
The last time I did a sugar detox, the first few days were rough. After the first week I felt so much better. I had a lot of energy. It is a mindset you have to get used to. I’ve been using gingerbread spice in my coffee. So good
Hi Dani,
I am from Jordan ( a middle eastern country ), and I really like your recipes because they are a lot different than our traditional recipes, you have a quick nice delicious recipes, and I am looking forward for your new ones, and for your new live videos.
Kind regards,
Dr. Karim
❤ I love the cinnamon of India, it actually on its own is good.
Great tips! Zevia is good, and I like it, but it’s pricey. I love when it’s o sale. Lol.
I haven’t tried the Zevia water yet, looms good though!
Can you do a video with some examples of good complex carbs? Also can you do some what I eat in a day videos? I’m really looking to cut sugar out of my diet as it is a huge problem.
Our brain needs sugar, helps with memory. The natural sugars and not processed or artificial of course. But certain organs in our body do need sugar.
I. know my comment is kind of late, but here goes anyway. I don’t diet, and have a healthy relationship-but I do get cravings sometimes. But they are rarely sweet foods. A lot of times it’s things I don’t get too often like bagels and cream cheese (I hate grocery store bagels and won’t bother), pad thai, etc. I think craving is maybe infrequent eating of something, regardless.
I appreciate how well you explain this, and the research you put into it. Also, everything is very visually appealing, from the mug to the top, to the countertops! Love it!
You have such great stuff!! Thank you for all the great ideas!! You totally rock it and help us all out!!
Can you please do a yams 101! I love all of your videos there all very healthy
Also… do you like the new intro & outro or do you miss the cheering? I’d love to know what you think xoxo
Smh they be putting drugs in the food, its way too addictive, some stuff I can’t even bring in the house cuz I know how I am
Also I am trying to transition into eating a more nutritious diet, because in order to recover from amenorrhea, I could not limit myself, but I find that i am gravitating towards more unhealthy options I want to eat more nutrient dense foods. However I want to do it safely, since i have a past of restriction. Do you have any advice.
Labas, Ižkur pas tokia gražuolė įtampa kad ramunėlės vartoji. Ačiū viskas įdomu bet puse tavęs mačiau gražu mielas veidelis gražus plaukai ❤️
I love your videos! And since you are a pharmacist.. I was wondering your thoughts on stimulants such as vyvanse, methylphenidate, etc. and do you know of any natural ways to focus..? Instead of using those I have ADHD and I’ve been on those for years and it turned my toes purple.. so I have to go off of them.. any natural ways you know of to focus easier? Thanks!
Thank you so much! Nobody needs this video more than I do lol
I really struggle to cut out sugar, it makes me feel so ill. I have Gord disease and want to be able to quit sugar for my health and weight loss without feeling week and having that lacking feeling if that makes sense x
I don’t think this video is very helpful especially when presented by such a “sweet” sha-sweeet presenter “sugar” you make me crave you allday! lol sorry
What about coconut sugar? I use that in my matcha. Should I use something different?
I needed, this in my life. Thank you, for sharing this with us!!
Thank you for your video. I’m curious about how the studies you reference that sugar does not have the same addictive effect as cocaine/hard drugs, therefore it is not addictive related to alcohol, which is regarded as safe for some and addictive for others. (Asking as a food addict and Licensed Mental Health Counselor). Its been a few days, so I may have some of your language wrong. I am aware of FA, which states that food/sugar addiction is more like alcoholism-in that some people react differently to the triggering substance than others. I’m also aware of Harm Reduction approaches in the mental health field as an alternative to abstinence-only treatments. Thanks for your great channel
First I want to say you are very beautiful and you voice is so soft and lovely. I found your channel a couple of weeks ago, and I have been buying and writing down all your healthy food choices in alternating in what I use to buy, like using cinnamon instead of sugar. Little by little my fridge and my food cabinets are filled with healthier choices. Slowly and bit by bit my family and I are making healthy food choices. Thanks for all your good tips and healthy information!!
Being Deficient in travel minerals can cause cravings.
Supplementing with chromium, drinking ACV can also help
If you’re not on a diet, and not restricting yourself, aren’t you effectively intuitively eating? And many people still end up overweight
I know this is a video about curbing sugar cravings so I understand the suggestion for carbonating water for those who have soda cravings and don’t want to quit cold turkey. However, I hope your viewers know that carbonation is also TERRIBLE for you. I’m sure you know that it contributes to poor bone density, which is really important for everyone to know, but women especially. Please share this warning with your viewers one day. Thanks for all your great ideas!
I had one of those soda streams but I didn’t like it. The way I got off Soda’s I drank club soda with a lime or lemon. Just because I missed the Carbonation. Now I just drink water with lemon. Is it unhealthy to drink lemon in my water all day long?
That is my problem exactly, I am finally able to admit it I’m addicted to sugar. I with things that I have been going through causes me to eat sugar. This is just what I needed. Thank you
Thanks for this! I really can’t start my diet because I am addicted to sweets. I know it is bad for me because I have PCOS
I’m 24 and pregnant with my second boy. I just got some pretty bad health news and this video came at the perfect time thank you so much!!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️
I’m getting my jar of kimchee out of the frig right now!!!! Thanks Dani for this VERY helpful and encouraging video.
you should try out la croix!! it is an amazing soda substitute
I have diabetes. I’m going mostly raw vegan ketogenic. I’m so sick of taking pills. Hope I can come off of them.
Is it good if I freeze my fresh veggies? I like corn (ik that’s a starch) green beans and broccoli
I can easily do away with obvious sweets and convert to stevia for coffee but it’s the hidden sugars that get me. Dammit.
Orange Zevia with a little heavy whipping cream makes it taste like an orange dreamsickle
The problem with how we talk about sugar and our drive to consume it (some of us anyway) is, there is nothing natural about how sugar is processed and put in foods. We evolved as hunter gatherers, so nothing about our evolution really applies to an enviornment where the cheapest, easiest foods to obtain are also the most calorie dense, and the most unhealthy. So I could get with advice to eat sugar in its natural forms, I think advising people with a sugar problem to avoid cakes, cookies and candy and to replace those calories with natural foods. Because, nobody got too fat from eating too many apples, or oranges, or watermelon. On the other hand, high sugar high fat foods like, say, cake, pies, ice cream or candy are extremely calorie dense, and the habit of eating just one large portion of dessert a day on top of everything else you eat will lead to weight gain. You can talk all you want about rodents, but I know human beings who are triggered by certain foods will eat them uncontrolled for long periods of time. I suspect, Ms. Sharp, you are not one of these people, so you don’t understand. But you do have a responsibility to your clients and the public in general to tell them the truth. Now, if we are talking about carrying an extra 5 or 10 lbs, then I agree. Enjoy that dessert. Who cares if your body isn’t “beach ready?” But for those who are carrying and extra 50, 75, or 100 lbs, it matters.
i eat apples or other types of fruit so i do not touch candy i love her smile i love seen black woman happy
Abbey I absolutely loved this video!! Thank you. I am so curious what your thoughts and opinions are on the holistic programs like IIN, Bauman, etc. I recently finished one and while I do feel like I learned so much I don’t feel like I could or should be someone’s nutrition consultant, but rather create great meal plans and nudge them in positive directions. I hate to see people step over the dietician line.
Thank you, I needed this, first unbiased opinion I have heard!
this is no critique, just a genuine question: my boyfriend has morbus crohn and fructose intolerance, so he can’t eat fruit. other than that, he doesn’t restrict anything. yet i notice him bingeing on sweets a lot, like I wake up in the morning and he has eaten half a jar of nutella and two boxes of kinder bueno or something while i was sleeping. i guess this ins’t healthy, especially because he doesn’t really eat a lot of vegetables, complex carbs and protein, he just doesn’t have a lot of appetite for these foods and often doesn’t have his first bite of food before 5 pm or something. I am just worried that the amount of trans fat isn’t good for him and his cardiovascular health and i would like to know how to help him. he himself says he’s addicted to sugar”
I love zevia! I get the dr. pepper flavor it has a small amount of caffeine and tastes the most like coke to me. It’s on my subscribe and save thru Amazon. When I’m on my A game I drink acv a couple times a day and make up 5 days worth of your chocolate Chia Pudding. That keeps me satisfied. I have to prep or I fail. Oh and sweet potatoes are the best! Thanks Dani!
I have a sweet tooth & I am a sucker for Starbucks & DD ice lattes with all of the sweetness junk added
Thanks for the tips, Mona!
This video couldn’t have come at a better time! I’m really struggling with my sugar cravings and healthy eating in general so thank you so much for the informative video!
Great video and I could relate very well. I developed binge eating after a period of dieting. I kept trying to get it under control by making more rules, but it only got worse. Food was on my mind all the time. I finally stopped binge eating completely after removing all restrictions from my diet in a desperate attempt to regain my sanity. In doing so, I had to tolerate not losing any weight for a year or two. I focused on filling myself with healthy and nutritious foods first whenever possible, then I ate whatever I wanted after. I made nutrition my priority and ignored my weight and shape as best as possible.
And who would have thought, I actually slimmed down to a pretty good weight after a few more years, and I don’t even think much about food anymore. I hate diets. I will never diet again in my life.
This is just my story though, binge eating and other eating disorders are complex. If you think you suffer from one, please seek help.
I’m so glad this video was posted today! I really want to start cutting out as much added sugar as possible in 2020. I feel it is weighing me down physically and mentally.
Stop drinking sugar first, then stop eating sugar. That helped me out the most.
Great advice. My biggest problem is I am a night shift NICU RN. I seriously feel at certain points in the shift that I legit need sugar. And I absolutely feel 100%better after eating it, usually candy. I find this is true of all of usespecially in high stress situations like trying to keep a baby from dying for hours. I love my jobbut do you have any recommendations as to what I could grab in these situations instead of chocolate out of the candy box we have on our unit? Really want to stop the sugar as much as possible.
Thanks for doing this! I have terrible self control with sugars lately so I’m definitely going to get some of that soda, make that chocolate snack, and have apple cider vinegar.
But there is not a thing as protein/fat addiction, bc we are high carb species
Would you do a video on savory snacks? I find myself cravings these a lot! Love your videos
Would love to see you review Jeff Cavaliere’s ‘Full Day of Eating’. Him and his channel are considered the best there is by/on fitness Youtube, and his attitude to food seemed refreshingly healthy from my amateur perspective!
I bet there will be that one person who eats a bucket of ice cream while watching this video. still love your video keep it up
I am so happy when my youtube suggests ypur videos. As usual you have made me unable to form a complete thought. What was i doing?? What? Oh well…who cares
Could u share some tips on feeding your soul?? I’m always looking for new ideas.
Are you able to do a video on idiopathic urticaria how to cure or reduce it if you have any helpful info about it please and thanks ❤️
My sugar addiction is real!! Especially during and the week before my period!! I need to quit cold turkey!!
As someone who is clean and addicted to food, cigarettes, and alcohol I get uncomfortable in my chair when ever someone says “oh don’t worry, your addiction will go away!” no. This is not how it works. Addictions do not go away. They are always there. You do not vanish your addiction, you only learn how to live with it. Just because I am clea, does not mean I am not an addict anymore or that my addiction does not exist anymore. I am just a clean addict and not an active addict. So please do not use the term “your addiction goes away” because it relly doesn’t. You can learn how to live with it, which is a differant story, but it never fully goes away. I go to AA (Alcoholic anonymos), and OA (Obese Anonymous). I have done the 12 steps programs and I have also been in rehab for a year. Please do not share misleading information about the disease of addiction without knowing the first thing about it. I usually adore your context and will remain a subscriber for life, but you do not need scientific evidence that sugar addiction is “a thing”. That is how addiction works. An addict could also be addicted to a chair and a table doesn’t matter what it is as long as it fulfills the hole in their hearts. If someone tells you they are addicted to sugar (which basically means that they do not control sugar but sugar controls them.) than the first thing you need to do as a friend IS BELUEVE THEM. Not run and seek for proof and evidence. I anyone has reached a low in life when they come to admit to be addicted to anything, they probably know what they are talking about. Sorry if I came off as mean, but as an addict I have to take a stand when I see videos that talk about addiction as if it is not a disease but rather a mood that swings away eventually.
I’m not addicted to chocolate. The fact I bought 8 family sized bags of dark chocolate peanut M&Ms just means I am getting protein along with antioxidants all at once.
Love this! Could you do a video on how to be healthy when eating out/having to eat out a lot? Part of my work or because I travel a lot I end up eating out and I never know how to choose healthy options/what to do when eating out! Thank you:D
I never had a hard time cutting sugar off since I don’t like sugary staff.
I have never had an ED but I do feel like I am addicted to sugar. I deal with it by not keeping chocolate in the house but eating it whenever I go out to coffee or visiting a friend ☺️ If I have chocolate in the house I really struggle to not eat it and if I have eaten 3 bars and I tell myself I can’t eat the 4th I wake up super early the next morning and eat it all until it’s gone It’s just so delicious. When I’m outside I order cake and enjoy it but I wouldn’t order a second, third etc. I don’t feel crazy guilty or restrict my eating for the rest of the day but I am annoyed that I feel like I control it! Anyways, it could be worse
Did you get any headaches? The sugar causes me acid reflux too?
100% stop drinking soda and juices. They just have a bunch of added sugar and empty calories. No wonder alot of people in the US are overweight or obese
I really believe that there should be a separate topic on Chocolate addiction.
Couldn’t care less about sodas and Oreos, but chocolate has some mental hold over me
Evolutionary! One of my favorite branches of science. Exciting to see you mention it ☺️
I have type 1 diabetes I didn’t get diabetes because I ate too much sugar I got it because my pancreas stop producing insulin anyway I’m not aloud eat too much sugar because it makes my blood sugar high and that’s bad but I really want to stop and be healthier but it’s so hard and I’m 13 so teenagers my age are eating chocolate, sweets, everything
Toni love the hair!!! God grants perfect peace to you when you keep your mind on him. And trusting God to handle every situation in your life, causes anxiety to leave. Blessings to ya!
I love those hi-chew fruit candies that’s my biggest sugar crave issue
Fruit is nature’s candy. So it is normal for humans to have sugar cravings and fruit is where we should be looking to to satisfy those cravings not cake, candy and other pastries.
Well, eating intuitively eludes me haha. I am overweight and have tried lchf, keto, intermittent fasting and now wfpb no oil etc. Honestly if I could eat what I want and what I like, it would never include a vegetable and very few fruits. I never cared when I was younger but now I have RA, Lupus and hypothyroid. Everyday seems to be a race to find the next best thing to bring down the inflammation. The closest I have found is eliminating dairy and sugar lowers my pain level significantly but I crave sugar so much. Its almost a daily distraction. I am tired of being the one who goes in a room and smells the sugar. Thinking only about what there is to eat that is yummy. I don’t care if it is a legitimate addiction or not, I need relief lol. People say just use common sense, be reasonable. I have no idea what that is anymore:( Vicki
Awesome! Thank you! I do a Paleo diet and always have some sort of healthy Paleo treat on hand. I never feel guilty about eating any paleo treat that I’ve made myself.
Great video… carbonated water once in a while is no probs.. however as a long term habit.. hmmm I’d research the health effects of that one though https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=health+effects+of+carbonated+water
This woman is truly one of the most beautiful women in the whole world. But she is concerned also about her health.
Wow, I bet she is a sweet heart as well?
Stay humble, nice and modest.
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me”.. faith in action…What can replace sugar?!
I like asking with this food are you choosing the body you have or the body you desire? That made me eat better
I wish all females look like her tied of these fat chicks talking about they not fat
Abbey, you’re amazing. Thank you sooo much for such a great, evidence based summary! Love, love, love all your content! Such a great resource.
This is my new crush. Sorry Angela Bassett, and Regina King.
New year new decade.. January 2020 diets and gym advice everywhere..I’m guilty of eating junk and going to try to eat more healthy..Got to have some enjoyment in life perhaps a treat now and then like ice cream or a bar of chocolate.
Can you do a video on how to not eat as much of certain foods because it helps your depression or for anyone who has health problems that can’t eat certain foods without getting into a restrictive or back into a dieting mindset?
I really struggle with this.
Thank you so much Dani, for the intelligent, helpful tips. The information you shared is useful at all times, as well as holidays. I have a candida issue right now and found helpful information in your video. Like for instance, when in the afternoon, I get a craving for something sweet, I am going to try the fermented food idea. Like, maybe a few dill pickle chips. Also, I am going to look for the Zevia. Thanks again for helping us all, and Happy New Year!
you had mentioned we would get 25 percent off on the Thirve Market products where is the link? Thank you for this video ( Judy )
I was wondering: could practicing intuitive eating lead to weight loss or would that imply that you’re not listening to your body’s needs?
Chromium Picolinate, and L-Glutamine have helped me. I take them for other reasons, but their side effects are that they curb sugar and carb dependence.
Speaking about addiction… if I’m start getting addicted to your videos, is it a bad thing? Is it a form of addiction too?
The brand vitamins that you take does the company have them for men? If so can you post the name of the company? Thanks!
I really needed this. I was just saying to myself that been loving hot chocolate lately and i don’t need to eat sweets and candy if i have a warm drink.
Have some kids stop acting like a machine. Your so insecure..gain a little weight…
Hi my Loves! Happy Valentine’s Day xoxo here’s a link to the blog post with more info. You can sign up to get your free VIP goodies here too. https://christinacarlyle.com/how-to-stop-sugar-cravings/
I just wasted 17 minutes of my life. 1. You don’t know if sugar addiction is real. 2. You suggest that there must be something wrong with you if you suffer from eating too much sugar. 3. You suggest seeing a therapist to fix this phantom underlying issue. Wow. Thoroughly disappointed.
Let me relapse and go buy a small chocolate.. Cause this isn’t helping. Some of y’all said indulge in your cravings every now and then & some say “cut out everything”.
You have a great way of being concise yet motivating. Buying cans of organic beans tomorrow. Thanks
I def. agree! There is a WORLD of difference between Zevia and Diet Soda. I NEVER crave more Zevia after having 1 and I never crave food either. However, with diet soda I ALWAYS crave another and have more food cravings.
I personally can’t stand zevia but i hate soda too. I’m water all the time
Sugar is very hard to quit. The addiction is very very real. It was harder to quit sugar than it was to stop smoking cigarettes. The best thing to do is cut down little by little. Quitting cold turkey is next to Impossible physically or mentally.
You already skin and bones, why are you trying to lose more weight
Our store probably wouldn’t have Zevia. But it sounds yummy. I love making Lime drink with just. 1 lime, some truvia, water and ice. Its so good and refreshing. Plus I make a frozinf strawberry drink the same way.:) Thanks for the tips.:) Love the idea of chocolate, with nuts and coconut jars. Sounds good.
For my sugar cravings I like zevia of course!! The creme soda is my favorite flavor. I also eat a morning snack with my favorite kind of nut with a small amount of chocolate chips . I always try and pair my sweets with a good fat and I notice that my blood sugar levels don’t spike as bad. I do allow myself once a week candy and I moderate the amount that I consume and those tricks alone helps my sugar cravings. Another trick is to think about what sugar does on a cellular level to your body. It personally works for me and it helps me to eat it sugar more moderately
I will meet a dietitian at my (very small) local doctors place, but I don’t know if I should meet one at the hospital instead. A dietitian that works daily with helping obese people to get healthy. The dietitian at my local doctors seemed a bit..lost when I wanted to book an appointment.
I am 30kg overweight and my body is screaming at me to do something.
How do I know if the dietitian is a pro?
So I know that this person will help me 100%
I can totally attest to the healthy fat helping because I used to always crave a candy bar or soda with my lunch at work but after I started having an avocado omelet every morning it really makes it easier to avoid those cravings:)
What worthless advice. Telling people to eat fruit (sugar bombs) to stop sugar cravings is as retarded as saying drink beer to stop alcohol cravings. He said you want to flatline your blood sugar, so eating MORE sugar is going to do that? The only way to “flatline” blood sugar is not to eat.
actually, if you get your tea too sweet, then you start to not love sweets ( it happened to me) and funny thing is that this was reccomended to me in youtube when i talked to my dad about peoples, who have sugar addictions
How about unsweetened coffee?
Is it bad for health?
I really like it though
It’s a daily struggle for me. I reached my original goal weight down 43lbs but I want to lose another 5lbs and it’s a real struggle these last two days.
I have to say: i love you sooo much!! You are an inspiration for me and my health and you made me soo much less meat. I am becoming an pesceterian thank you soo muchhh ❤❤
Hi! Nice tips, thanks so much. Do you have a video on how to prepare sauerkraut? I bought one and I threw it away because the smell was really bad, like rotten.
I am so literally addicted to coffee lol help.I have stopped drinking alcohol..sodas..white bread.I have high blood pressure and I know this is so bad and the added creamer is the kicker lol.How do I ween myself off of this.
Music can be addictive. Check out Gabor Mate’s book In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts.
The fact that sugar is 10× more addictive than cocaine scares me
Sugar is terrible for you and you definitely have great alternatives and advise about how to avoid it and change bad habits. Recent studies have shown that sugar isn’t the cause of diabetes. That is a misconception. It does contribute to a whole slew of other health problems. Thank you for your informative videos.
I’M SO TRYING ZEVIA I love your channel Dani!!!!!! Your a great example of living healthy CHALLENGE ACCEPTED GUUUUURL
I Love your body and that amazing smile your always wearing
the only thing you can do to stop your sugar cravings is to eat sugar. you can delay it, but there is absolutely no avoiding it. you are going to eat it anyway. the only thing you can do is eat it rationally and go back to a clean diet.
I love canned green beans and I love lemon and I know I am addicted to sugar in the worst way, I’m going to give these tips a go!! I can do this! Thank you!
I’ve cut our sugar very strictly this past week and my skin has broke out! Is this normal? I have never been prone to breakouts. I thought my skin would clear up more…
My take on that is, if you want to avoid sugar/sweet cravings is to eliminate anything that can trigger those. Even Stevia or other natural sweeteners can trigger that. For me it was going Low-Carb that helped with that. I know just the familiar taste can trigger cravings and even artificial sweeteners can trigger an Insulin response. So better not to even step in that direction which will eliminate future set backs and pit falls. Like I said this is my opninion and experience. If I need a fruity drink I go for mineral water with organic lemon juice. You can also make other fruit infused drinks without opening a can. Which is also cheaper and healthier in the long run.
Thanks christina for your previous tips to get rid of sugar craving……Please my question is: is it possible to use apple cider vinger instead of lemon juice when in case we have no lemon at that moment?….Please waiting for your answer dear christina ☘
You will not beat sugar cravings and sugar addiction with stevia and cinnamon. You will beat it by going to a supoort grouo and surrounding yourself with addicts who also understabd you and could lead you to a better way.
You are so cute I live your cheeks peace and love from Paris France <3
i cut out soda 15 years ago, that stuff is straight up disgusting
I was SO addicted to sugar and bad food. I couldn’t stop and I was out of control. I was gaining an insane amount of weight but I didn’t care.. I just wanted more and more of my fix. My whole body and skin were inflamed and I knew that if I had something like chicken and rice, the rice would be like a little sprinkle of hard drugs to a drug user. Any carbs would trigger my desire for sugar and more carbs. So I completely cut carbs out of my diet because I realized how bad my problem with carbs and sugar became. The craving for them went away completely which is something I never ever thought would happen or could see myself doing (this is just what worked for me.) Sugar and food addiction is so powerful and difficult to have and I genuinely feel for anyone stuck in that whirlwind of emotion and hormonal fluctuations etc. Thanks for the informative video
I love squeezing lemon or lime into the carbonated water! Tastes like sprite:)
This is great but sometimes people need to just give themselves a break and enjoy some sugary meals. Over the past week, I’ve been eating really poorly even though I usually eat healthy, and once I had some delicious fudgy brownies and cake, my cravings died down. It was exactly what I needed and I feel I can move on now. I dont let it ruin me because I exercise often and eat healthy. I just considered it a treat day and I’m not guilty about it at all. So sometimes, maybe your body needs the real thing.
These are great! Thank you!! I wish I liked avocados… I’ve tried them so many ways and I just can’t hack them….in a smoothie is the only way I can go. Love Zevia!
Where’s that rat with the cocaine, I have some sugar for him lol
When you start filling up on healthy foods, the sugar cravings do subside. Ooh I love your hair, amazing
Love the Zevia Cherry Cola has caffeine and sweetened with Stevia. I’m another ex Diet Soda customer!
I definitely think we crave and try to reach for the foods we restrict. And I honestly think that’s true for any way of eating.
I’m a vegetarian who limits dairy, for example, and I’d prefer to never eat meat ever again….doesn’t mean I don’t sometimes wish for something I used to freely enjoy. Lol.
I don’t restrict sugar, though, but I do sometimes have issues in regards to making the choice to eat too much sugar instead of regular food and I’m trying to be aware of that.
I do have issues with food and eating though. I’m trying to get better.
Does adding the tea bags to your water still count towards water intake? I’ve seen some people say tea counts and others say no, just curious on your opinion
Potatoes are starch that turns into sugar. You are sexy as hell tho so eat what you want
Me and her need to date so she wont have time to do these video’s
When you said ” confuses your brain aswell as you metabolic processes ” and put that clip of Tom Cruise looking confused had me deadass laughing
This is Lori Bach. The maximum sugar amount per day per person is 10 teaspoons which is, like you said, one can of regular Coke. Our country is in serious trouble with 32 oz soft drinks plus refills.
Is it possible to be addicted to an essential Macronutrient? What do you think about the fact that every IV bag contains refined sugar?
I’m from Australia my name is Sarah love love ur recipes and I hate sugar absolutely looking forward to watch more shows from u
I just love you… the information, the samples and nutritional info. Keep it all coming I absorb it all, and I thank you!
Cutting processed sugars help me with my weight loss and improved my mood!
I love zevia! So great for a soda craving. Great tips. Thank you.
when i crave sweets i just grab a couple dates. just make sure they are not sweetened through sugar, but naturally by themselves. its usually the biggest type of dates in size..
or plain greek yogurt and adding some honey and nuts.
Solution: go live in a country where the only sugar is in tea for 9 months. It suckedbut I’m fixed haha. No longer crave sugar like I did before. I wonder if your body just craves what it is used to eating….? Especially sense we have sugar in everything in our culture?
As someone having ex-lab rats rescues I had to Stop watching after the descriptions of the testing got more detailed! Would haved loved to watch all of the video though
When I get hungry for sweets I grab a hand full of dried Cranberries or a couple Dates. A bowl of Yogurt with Fruit and a little Honey also works.
OH MY GOSH! I am so thankful I came across your channel
Whenever I have sugar, I find myself CRAVING sugar (cane sugar, fruit doesn’t do this to me). I am literally raiding my cupboard looking at the snacks frantically looking for a fruit roll up or something loaded with can sugar to the point of frustration and anger. My family has a history of addiction (mostly alcoholism) so it’s not a shocker that some substance would do this to me. Artificial sugars like aspertame give me migraines so substitutes are not an option:/
Great tips, Dani and just in time! I am drinking a diet soft drink as I write this, I am going to check out Zevia and see if it upsets my stomach. Merry Christmas!
Hi, thanks for the info. Is there a reason you talk with your head sideways? It’s hard to watch & very distracting!
I have been battling with sugar for about 20 years (I’m 48). My mom was a diabetic and the years leading up to the diagnosis, I remember how crazy she would get if she didn’t get her sweets, I had to go to my aunt’s house next door to get something for her. She ended up getting a couple different cancers, took several strokes and went from Type 1 to type 2. I see myself on the same path and my daughter (30 years old) says she sees resemblance too. My mom was 64 when she passed, I do not want that for myself. I have had 3 warnings from blood tests saying I was borderline. The first one I quit the sugar and everything was ok 30 lbs lost later, then the self sabotage happens…everytime I see myself lose weight, I do something to fall off the wagon. I have been through a million diets and fads…all that really worked for me was cold turkey off the sugar (bars, cakes etc…still ate whole grain bread)…and exercise. I do understand a lot and could probably teach classes lol, I know I just need a more disciplined lifestyle. When you wanna eat the crap, you will find an excuse…for example, I gave up pop for over 5 years, had a root beer once because it was cane sugar lol…for 5 days I had one a day…I knew the habit was coming again, so I gave it all up again…yesterday. Today is a new day for me again…one of these days, I will connect…I know I can do, I HAVE done it…I just have to stick with it. I have a great support system too with friends and family so I am lucky:) Anyway…I am a Newfie(living in Hamilton) and tend to babble on a lot lol, I just wanted to thank you for your videos. I am off to watch some more:)
Currently going sugar free. This is a great video. Plus you’re just beautiful as all get out!!!!
I don’t understand how something sweetened with stevia or other sugar replacements would be different than the other diet sodas as far as sugar cravings. Stevia may be a bit healthier but it is the same concept. It seems sweet and causes you to desire more sweet things. There are many people who have problems with sugar that have found themselves with the same cravings when they switch to stevia.
Need to disclose conflicts. Are you paid by zevia? Also dark chocolate at the highest cocoa content is too bitter and inedible. Once you get over 80% it quickly becomes too bitter to satisfy any sugar craving. Good tips overall.
Aren’t canned veggies or canned anything bad for you? I love green beans, but i thought you’re supposed to stay away from canned items.
My coworker feels the need to constantly keep tabs on what I’m eating and ALWAYS comments on how fattening it is, and how she can’t eat it. I’ve lost 40lbs since I’ve started working here. Today I finally said “can you not?” Even though in my head I wanted to say “even if I did have a healthy relationship with food, it would still bother me how often you comment on how fattening my food choices are.” Sorry I wanted to comment this on here since it happened literally 5 minutes before I clicked on this
Omg I also have a connection with green beans growing up, it really helped me to lose weight and not crave carbs I used to eat it every day for lunch and dinner for years and years.
I love watching these I’ve cut out sugar altogether no more sweet treats
No more soda☺️☺️
Can you make a video about curbing cravings for salty crunchy/fried foods?
Love this! Thank you. Gonna drink more lemon water for sure and try the green beans thing! Also telling myself I can do this! Thank you so much!
Anything fizzy damages your brain. There is a video somewhere on YT-I stopped drinking carbonated after that
If I don’t restrict my sugar intake, I would eat an entire pack of cookies in one binge. There has to be more to this. I do think food addiction exists in me. I’m addicted to sugar and can’t control it.
Oh, and thanks for the video I never would have guessed the fermented food thing. That’s amazing!!!
Thank you! Happy Holidays to you. These tips are so helpful. I crave meat and rice and cheese constantly
By the way..You and Emily Hampshire favor
Thank you so very much, I M a diabetic, My blood sugar has been stable for a couple of years. Lately I have indulged in sweets a bit much, and now my blood sugar is dropping. Fast out of nowhere, and now my craving for sugar is is simple driving me crazy. I am certainly going to try some of your food suggestions. Thanks again.
Once i quit sugar and refined carbs for almost a year, i slimed up considerably but after that restrict diet i went crazy when i tasted ice cream and pasta again it was like the most delicious thing in the universe, ate so much of the stuff that i gained the wheight back.
Please say something more about this topic on part 2 of the video
I went through a period of time where I felt that I was addicted to foodcarbohydrates mostly. Instead of focusing on RESTRICTION I focused on REPLACEMENT. Restriction is a form of negative reinforcement and replacement (for me personally) was a form of POSITIVE reinforcement. I didn’t have the mentality of “forbidden’ foods with the replacement practice because I could, by my standards, eat anything I wantedjust a healthier version. You’re craving ice-cream? Maybe a lower-calorie, healthier icecream. Or maybe fruit. Or maybe make sure that you are replacing this dessert with a larger, more filling dinner with appropriate amounts of protein and fat. If you want to lower your carb intake overall, I found it best to not drop it drastically overnight, but rather decrease it over a week or two. That’s just my personal experience. Maybe it’ll help someone. It is very individual and so you may have to experiment around to figure out what is the appropriate kind of ‘replacement’ for your addictive foods. Good luck <3
Hey Dani,
(Processed) Sugar is obviously not great for us. And so we should totally keep am eye on it.. but also bad sweets usually have fat in them as well and probably sodium so all that combined is a recipe for disaster? What say you? LoL you are the pro 😉 I think this is a great video. I’m sharing it with ppl. Thanks! And I cut out soda a while back. It was hard! But I did it. I went from dark sodas to light color to seltzer to nothing.. to maybe occasional but usually my occasionals are more natural sodas 😉
Definitely needed this! Would love to see a video on some beginner vegan meals, quick tips. Over the holiday break I want to try more on my health and eating better. Starting a new plan to take the time to focus on what I am putting in/on my body.
“Sugar (da da da da da da)
Ah
You are my
And I cant stop ing youuu”
Lol (I love sugar, yo.)
Dude our society is sick, why do we do this allow companies to sell us this crap
luckily I’m not American. I’m surprised American people didn’t confront their gov to start controlling corporations and shit food they make. o.O
Hi there I would like to know more on what type of green beans are u wish us to use canned or fresh
Great informative video, but the one thing I noticed is that you refer to Stevia as an “artificial sweetener” in the video and in your description. The wonderful thing about stevia, is that it’s NATURAL and not artificial. It is a naturally-occurring sweet-tasting leaf that people have been using for hundreds of years. Artificial sweeteners are chemicals created in labs which have shown to have horrible effects on our bodies (adrenals, etc). Very distinct difference, worth noting!
I’ve already cut out dairy, glueten and most processed foods, but I do keep a few things around the house with refined sugar….time to kick those out!
60 days without sugar and I have lost 6 kg. I also went on a low carb diet and have done exercise for the past month
I haven’t eaten sugar at all (except natural sugar) in seven months
What!!!! We don’t need sugar!????! Of course we do!!!! Our brains can only use glucose (sugar) to metabolise into energy and if we don’t get it our brains are in trouble and it can lead to some serious problems. I hate these pseudoscience claims. Please take care to do your research properly, what can seem like an innocent claim can actually harm people.
great video I love a woman that wears her hair natural you are so beautiful
I’m on day 7 of not eating sugar and apples never tasted so good
This is so true with me. I never binged in candy or sweets (maybe because i dont love candyjust kinda like it) because my family always had bowls of candy out. It was a staple for the living room. I think I probably eat two pieces of candy each week? Because I know its always there
Rock sugar (mishiri) we are lucky because it have nutrients in India
I ưsed to stuff myself with donuts until it became so nasty that i do not crave for that level of sweetness ever again
What are you views on monkfruit sweetener? I just got some and I love to put that in my coffee but I’m under the impression it’s healthier that regular table sugar…is this true?
Sugar taste good So is healthy food taste good to of the right season ends and are fat Love fatty food
I take sugar only in tea. I don’t eat sugary food even though I have obesity and don’t have mood to do anything. No one tell me why I am being like that
The video in the description reminds me of old sixpaclshortcuts videos.
The way you say WOODER instead of water tells me that you’re probably from Philly or New Jersey. Am I right?
When i try to stop eating sugar my body shakes aggressively lmao
i do this and it works but sometimes i get a stomach ache if its the wrong mix.
I live with a retiree that drinks 5 coffees a day which has 3 teaspoons of sugar in each coffee. His also adds 6 tablespoons of sugar to his bowl of coco pops. His drinks are cordial. Needless to say that he has Diabetes2 and no sense of taste.
I support everyone in this stop the Sugar forever it is really hard for me now i am almost 1 week without! Sugar is not just poison is addiction and it is like a all worst drugs in the world, by my opinion is just a legal one so people are weak and to be controlled.
Just another blah blah blaw diet of things that aren’t normal come on, almond butter? Have peanut butter, bacon and eggs, ham and eggs, fat from butter and meat like steak, etc.
So ridiculous, been there done that in over a thousand diets that have come and gone! yikes!
Dani— could you please do a video on carbs the good, the bad and the ugly. Get a little more in-depth. Thank you!
WATER CAN REDUCE MY SUGAR DESIRE? IM DOING THE 7 FAST DIET AND I WANT A DOUGHNUT RIGHT NOW
your tips are very helpful. sugar may seem harmless, we’re having it every day after all, but it’s a silent danger.
i want to also awknowlegde you for your no plastic/ packaging in your videos.
Last night I was in Walgreens and I decided to walk down the candy aisle looking for candy. I did not find what I wanted, so I left. I have noticed I had to be careful in the office. Im glad I did not find anything and left.
I have been trying to eat more intuitively and I think it’s going kind of well. I notice that I quite frequently think: “oh I can’t eat that” but than I think “oh but I CAN” and that is so liberating!! The only thing that I really struggle with is the fact that I crave sugary things but when I eat them, my tummy aches and I get migraines and I get tired really easy… I have been struggling with chronic fatigue for years and after I stopped eating simple sugar, I felt so much better. So, I don’t really know what to do? Any tips or book/ YouTube video recommendations are welcome!
Hi Dani I have a delicious honey crisp apple with a tbsp of peanut butter
when sugar cravings hit. I do prefer
Monk fruit over stevia though. Less bitter I think.
My experience with sugar, specifically chocolate, has been to abstain for a while then bring some home and binge eat till it’s gone. The past few months, I’ve kept more than I could possibly eat in one sitting in the house (3-4 bags of Dove Squares) and I have been successful in moderating.
Thinking I might have to get a soda stream! Genius idea about adding a tea bag. Did you know you could add a chai tea bag to a cup of coffee and it flavors it. Try it! Do not recommend citrus or fruit teas. Oh dear that would be a mistake.

I’m watching this drinking Gatorade and eating toast and syrup
Keep in mind that the Z evia soda substitute is packaged in aluminum cans? I don’t know how that could be any good for you, Aluminum is very toxic for the body
Read elswhere here we should eat less than 25 grams per day. most Americans go way beyond that
Awesome video!! I used Zevia to kick my diet soda habit as well… =)
Interesting topic. I would love to hear more about it but in regards to children….I feel like we unconsiously limit and control “bad” food with our kids only to then treat them with it!! Which only makes the “forbidden fruit” more desirable!
You are right man i have lowered 50 lbs in 8 months listening to this, its hard at first but it pays off, i weight 170 now down from 254. Eat whole foods and you will see changes in your body.
Studies show that sugar craving, is actually your body needs salt and you think you need sweets.
I have an issue where I eat until i’m absolutely stuffed and feel sick. People tell me to just eat til i’m “satisfied” but I have no idea how that feels because i’m so used to overeating. Is this related to BED? And how do I fix it?
He is so damn right! now when i consume ice cream or candy on my cheat meal i feel weird after consuming it & even guilty although its allowed once a week as per my diet program..
This has to be the best and the most informative videos i have seen On Sugar addiction! Very helpful indeed
What do you think of Swerve? I’ll make baked goods for my diabetic aunt with Swerve, almond flour and casein. It works okay for her.
Gram per pound of body weight. That’s new, imperial mixed with SI……:(
Your videos motivate me to eat better and work o staying fit. Not that I need to be a body builder like yourself but I want to eat food that’s nourishing for my body and exercise to stay fit. I was kinda of curious as to becoming a vegan but the idea went right out the window. I’m gonna stay on my DASH diet plan.
You just know she will eat sugar later on like dr Hyman said love food that loves you back ❤️
Hey Abbey! I was commenting to tell you that your vodeos have helped me so much on my food relationship recovery mission, however, I need a question answered…
I’m trying to intuitively eat, however, I still “binge” after a week or so of doing it. I really do not purposefully restrict myself and I generally eat balanced. I just don’t know what to do if I am not quite ready for intuitive eating yet. I don’t know what steps I can take to finally get ready to do it.
I practice mindfulness with yoga, meditation and breathing which as helped but I still have relapses.
Bare in mind not everyone lives in America
Saying that I visited Canada 10 years ago and I was shocked how much sweeter there chocolate is compared to British chocolate in the uk
Plus free refills of soda at the cinema and pop corn that comes in a bucket
Living in a house full of people that enjoy sweet things myself included but now I’m diabetic is become very challenging I do not like water but I drink diet soda which says it has no sugars artificial sweetener or calories
you are better off not drinking ANY soda, period. Just drink WATER. Nice video though.
One thing that I don’t see these videos addressing is that the actual experience (rather than taste) of eating sweets is different from eating hot meals or a piece of fruit. I like to eat the sweets very slowly, over the course of an hour or two, usually while relaxing in a prone position. You can’t eat a banana over the course of more than an hour. In fact I struggle to think of any other food you can do this with (I guess you could use chips, grapes, or nuts? doesn’t seem the same). Tried to cut sugar for a month a couple of years ago (for no real reason other than people saying it’s bad, I am borderline underweight and have no health problems) and failed after two weeks. I was thinking about it all the time because I lacked this little evening ritual.
Sugar is a drug. It is a stimulant. Alcohol is a drug too. All are dangerous
You know you DON’T have a good 5-Step Program when people can’t complete Step 1
My parents and my other siblings eat this every day so i cant just throw it all out its so hard i try it every day but keep taking little bits its so addictive i manage to stop smoking and sugar is worse
Your videos are great! I would love to hear/see your thoughts on Caroline Donners “The F*** it Diet”-Book!
We don’t need sugar? Where did you go to school? Every cell of the body runs on glucose, especially the brain!
Yes, great tips to cut out processed sugar, great job, Dr. Mona!
What about diet coke with aspertame?? That is my biggest addiction.
I quit drinking traditional soda back in February. The only thing I have now is the occasional Italian soda or plain club soda with an orange or lime slice in it. My migraines have gone down tremendously and even when I do get one it’s not near as bad. Plus I was getting tons of abscess’s in my gums (bad teeth from having 3 kids) and I’ve only gotten a couple since then. Where as before I was having to get antibiotics once a month if not slightly more often.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on the so call “Thin privilege” that’s been going around social media for a while. It is really a thin?
I don’t like Halloween.
It’s not for us take care in fitness great job.
I’ve often asked me if I had a sugar addiction but I stopped labeling myself bcs it makes me feel so bad every tim i would eat sweets and as I have had eating disorder and yoyo weight (+10kilos every years), and now that I grew up I started to be less restrictive on my diet (intuitive eating is it maybe?) and I feel so much better. Thank you for the amazing content you give <3
Also I’ve always had a sweet mouth (not sugar mouth bcs sugar makes me feel bad) but mostly i’m a chocolate lover and instead of beating myself to eat sugary things I started to treat myself with sweet and healthy dessert by baking at home and replace sugar by honey or dates (plus this give a yummy taste!°). Also I’ve found that when I tried to stop completely to eat sweet I started to crave very a lot and after a few days I will just eat a lot of sweets. So the best for me is too apply the 80/20 diet by eating healthy and whole food all the time and eat a bite of chocolate every days and it will prevent me to eat too much sweets at once + I feel I crave less often cake!
I’ve found that the more I eat processed sugar (snack cakes, milk chocolate, prepackaged cookies, cakes, ice cream) the more of them I have to eat to feel satieted and the more often I want them. I also find fruit or less processed sweets less satisfying. If I eat them less than once a month I don’t feel the need to eat them more often and find smaller amounts of less-processed foods perfectly satisfying. Like a couple squares of dark chocolate or a handful of dried fruit, etc. My theory is that these foods are a balance of sweet/salt/fat that throw off my tastebuds when eatten too frequently.
Your videos have been so helpful to me in understanding my issues with food. What I thought was an addiction to food was a lack of coping mechanism for my neurodiversity. I have ADHD and am constantly craving stimulation and dopamine. It took me a long time to figure out that my overeating was due to stimulation-seeking instead of true hunger. I’m now able to listen to my body instead of feeling overwhelmed and bingeing in the presence of food. By learning intuitive eating, I’m able to stop myself and ask, “Am I hungry or do I need to be engaged” and respond accordingly. It used to feel like all I was able to think about was food and I wasn’t able to turn it down even when I wasn’t hungry. But now if I’m not actually hungry, I can redirect and say “No thanks, I’m going to do a puzzle instead.” It’s honestly a life changer. I feel so silly for never thinking to listen to my body before but I guess that’s the thing about learning coping mechanisms. Intuitive eating really was the piece of the puzzle that I was missing. Thank you.
Any alternatives to stevia or alcohol sugars? I can’t use them bc they cause major digestive distress
“We don’t know if…”.. as a matter of fact, we DO know. We also can see clearly that Abbey Sharp is very much addicted to sugar, sugary snacks, deserts etc, from her eating routine. It’s also obvious from the accelerated aging of her skin/face collagen structure. Sorry, but you cant give people dietary advice when you look 45 at the age of 31. The clearest evidence of how bad fructose (whether is from cupcakes or pineapples) ages the body is to be seen at vegans, who age in dog years. Yeah, cupcakes happen, but like during the weekend, not 4 times a day like in your case.
I feel with me, my sugar addiction was and still is, mostly psychological. I was diagnosed with T2 diabetes almost a decade ago. My eating of sugary shit got completely out of control after that. For 10 years, I bought two half gallons of ice cream each week and ate both within 2 days. I drank sugary coffee drinks almost every day. I ate donuts for breakfast. It was completely out of control. Every 4 months my A1c got higher and so did the amount of insulin I had to take. What saved me, ironically, was being diagnosed with a fatty liver. After the pandemic, I will have to go in for special bloodwork and maybe a biopsy. I do NOT want a liver transplant. That was enough to scare me away from what I was doing. I no longer eat like a raccoon in a dumpster. However, I do still struggle a bit. I no longer eat dairy, but last night while shopping, I did buy 2 pints of dairy free ice cream. I rationalized it by saying, well, it’s okay because there’s no animal fat in it and I’ll just have a couple of spoonfuls a day and it should last a week. Well, no such luck. I finished both pints in an hour. The reality is I cannot have sugary stuff like that anymore. My sugar intake will have to be limited to a slice of birthday cake and a slice of cheesecake at the holidays. I am limiting my sugar to just apples and blueberries on a daily basis. These are healthy foods that I don’t have a desire to binge on. And I think my psycholigical addiction to sugar came from being told that I could no longer have the things that I loved eating when I was diagnosed with diabetes. I wish I had listened to the doctors better and I wouldn’t have these health issues today.
I drink mostly water.. but also have crystal light when water just gets boring.
This was a really interesting video. I was led to believe that sugar addiction was real and it was led by big sugar companies which is why sugar is in so many foods when it doesn’t naturally occur. You gave me a lot to think about and I thank you for that.
Hey Abbey, I totally believe that health can exist at all sizes. The word “health” itself is quite relative. However, there seems to be an issue with “over acceptance.” My question is: What is the difference between body acceptance and fat/skinny glorification?
You discuss in many videos that the key to a healthy lifestyle is healthy behavior, but many people will use “health at every size” to justify their bodies, even if they are normally engaging in mostly unhealthy behaviors. If you are at least moderately active (walking around 30+ minutes a day), eating a balanced-ish diet, and your doctor says that you’re good, then yeah, average and relative health at every size is a thing. But it is hard to differentiate between someone who is obese (bmi wise [though bmi is a crappy scale]) or underweight who is consuming an unbalanced diet and not exercising compared to someone who is eating a balanced-ish diet and is exercising. For the sake of this discussion though, the people do not have any major illnesses or anything that would impact their lives. I feel like “health at every size” should include “fitness at every size” and “balanced diet at every size.” I think that would make it easier for people to understand what you mean. I know people who would be considered obese/underweight but eat right (perfection doesn’t exist) and exercise more than most college kids. We should show how bodies don’t magically change and that, even if you do all the healthy things, weight loss is not a guarantee.
I must say that one of the reasons to eat a “dessert” is to cheer yourself up for all good you’ve done or all miserable that happened. THAT was an addiction to me reward.
And that stayed like a habbit which was hard to breake. So “to cheer myself up” I started buying, for example, mozarella which I really like and it would motivate me to eat some extra bazil and tomato(that’s a bit but more than zero, huh?) Also pack of mozarella is so much smaller than pack of cookies or chocolate. So, a bit smaller intake of calories as a result. And more adventurous mind as well to get out of routine.
I feel food addiction is like comfort eating, emotional.. and
also look if someone has a disease or so. Like I have fibromyalgia and when I were in flareup days/weeks/months I wanted to never stop eating sugary foods, because the ache made me have anxiety attacks so they and the ache took so much energy from the body so it wanted sugar, like you mention is fast and easy and take less energy to convert to energy in the body. But I also have ME and probably lipedema that causes my body to store the food I eat and not burn it, so I am over weight. Now I have a medicine for the ache and I don’t have the anxiety attacks anymore and I don’t feel to eat a lot anymore like binge eating sugary foods. I can now eat sugary foods in moderation time to time. So can be other things causing things. Is food addiction a diagnoses or a symptom for something else..
How do you feel about tart cherry juice? It has been recommended to me for sleep support and I use it when I take my trace minerals supplement because the taste is horrible.
I make my own Kombucha. Takes the place of soda! Now I know it helps with sugar cravings. Awesome! Thanks for all your videos!
Dude I enjoy watching your videos but they’re way to long I was done at 9min
I realized that I have a sugar addiction a few days ago after realizing I had gained 30 lbs within the last 2 years. I literally have a whole birthday cake in my fridge that I bought from Meijer today after I got off of work, and its not even any ones birthday!!!!!! I was just craving birthday cake and ice cream so I bought a whole damn birthday cake!!!! This is going to be a difficult transition.
Your knowledge and experience sharing with us makes us most benefited and inspired us to stick with our local traditional healthy food to be eaten at right time and in right qty so as to get benefited from balance diet. There is one query. Stevia is a good or bad compare to sugar? For Diabetic patient? Calorific value? Like some suppliments with stevia( INS 960) comes under brand musclexp supergreens, macrolife natural greens etc. should it to be avoided as packed items or can be taken in place of sugar. one link pasted below shows some information on stevia so request your feeback on same. Whether this site is having good and correct info? https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19961353
Thank you Dani for this video!! One of my favourites.:) I’ve been really watching my sugar intake these days. Also I love, love, LOVE Zevia! My favourites are black cherry and root beer. Yum!!
Hi Toni, what was your toughest challenge cutting out suger?
The habits associated with sugar and fat addiction is a product of the body not seeing the fact it’s not the Stone Age and energy dense foods are everywhere
Hey Abbey, thank you for your much needed voice of common sense, science and experience, you do a brilliant job with your channel:) Could you talk more about the relationship between the body’s set point and levels of physical activity / exercise please?
I’d love to hear what you think about Kathryn Hansen’s Brain Over Binge book/podcast. She talks a lot about how binging is triggered by restriction and dieting, and how you can break out of that cycle.
hey, i love your channel and you helped me recover from HA on my own, I am 17 and a lot of my family says things that are kind of triggering/ tainted w/ diet culture rhetoric and I was just wondering if you have any suggestions for teens to change the conversation around food within their own families.
This is interesting. All of this food stuff is so confusing. I am not obese, but have gained about 20 pounds after quitting smoking the last time a few years ago. Right before I quit I was pleased with how I looked.
The previous time I had quit smoking (5 yrs ago) I was in a commercial so had a personal trainer for 9 months who talked to me about nutrition. We used MyFitnessPal to track calories / macros and worked out super hard 3 times per week. It worked for me, I felt great mentally and aesthetically.
Now, I still work out on my own but am not pleased with how my body looks. It gets better when I use various ways of tracking or systems (like 21 day fix food containers) but it’s like I can’t control myself when not tracking. When I eat “intuitively” I gorge on all kinds of crap food.. It’s like there’s no middle ground. I also have IBS & auto immune issues. I eat healthier than anyone I know. But I am not happy with how I look and don’t know what to do.
The sugar addiction thing made sense to me because that is the main thing I can’t resist (esp during PMDD time) but now I feel confused all over again. lol. I really don’t know what to do, especially with all kinds of people touting “their” way the way to go.
I know juicing fruit and veg takes away the fibre and gives a sugar spike but is it also the case with celery juice? I heard blending celery wasn’t as good as juicing it… eager for your opinion.
I have one question to you please tell me. I started counting my calories.I try to eat more protein less cards. I eat complex carbs. I loss 8 lbs in 6 months. But my face have some rashes and color pink. Why? My age 43.
Is it better for someone who is used to consuming way too much sugar (pop, pasta, bread sweets the whole deal) to gradually cut down or to come off of sugars more quickly?
When I goto Walmart. I get the bag of broccoli or the broccoli Normandy mix in the frozen isle. Withdrawing from all that process food will make you feel horrible at first. For my soda lovers go to carb water like Topo Chico, Perrier, so on. Yes they have sodium but not much and they basically only carbonated water with a twist of lime/cherry or whatever is used in the other flavors of those line. But I rec only drinking like two 12oz bottle the most. I drink it with my meals
Sister, I have to applaud your Victorious living! I’m a newbie to this lifestyle. I’m still trying to work things out. Your videos are a blessing. If your a Christian, I believe this may help you. When you awake try spend time reading God’s word. Roman 12: 1; 2 is extremely vital to heping anyone gain power to overcome
your craving etc.
Hey, Abby. Speaking of food addiction, i wanted to ask: I read in a book that ADHD is related to food addiction because sometimes the kick of energy certain foods have can help your brain function better, lowering the symptoms of ADHD, so it can become a vicious cycle. I was wondering, how true is this? And also, if it is true, how does someone handle this situation?
Awesome video as always! Xx
Thanks for the sweet potato tip. Our crop this year was OK but the largest one was only 7 1/2 pounds. Last year we had one that weighed 12 1/2 pounds. The sugar in soft drinks is almost unbelievable. We hardly drink ANY soft drinks.I buy less than one a year. Sometimes at a party we drink one.
Farina oatmeal.salad with raisins nuts yogurt.ice cream fruit salad.
What’s really interesting about this conversation is that a lot of health professionals don’t believe that abstinence for addiction is always the solution. Look up “harm reduction” and you can learn about this more…
Abbey you only addressed sugar addiction. Can you address the Salt, Fat and Sugar combination in processed foods relating to addiction as well?
Hi Dani, Thanks for the nice video! I was wondering recently if Stevia is safe for who’s pregnant? Thank you
Fresh fruit and nuts combo really do the job if you struggle with sugar cravings
Stop drinking Coca-Cola, Pepsi or some “energy” drink. Then after a week or two try a glass of it. Its going to be undrinkable as it will be too sweet for you.
i have a friend who has a MASSIVE sugar addiction and i dont think she knows it. when i first met her i was in awe at how much sugar she consumed. every day, ice cream, chocolate, lollies, bars, biscuits. and then she says she cant eat more than like 3 bites for a meal???? i figure it must be bc she just consumes so many empty calories in these high processed sugary foods. ive kinda hinted maybe she eats too much sugar which she agrees but she hasnt really admitted its an issue, is just like “i have a sweet tooth.” and i really hate to be that judgy person but it is EVERY day, and she almost seems avoidant on seeing a doctor. and then she also calls my way of eating restrictive even tho i eat like a hound haha, i just dont think shes ever lived in a way that involves like, a fruit or a vegetable once in a while.
Thank you for the confirmation. Sugar is my nemesis as well. Vegan diet, meditation, yoga, verbal affirmations are some of the words that have been coming across my path for a while so I will be taking heed. I have a lot to do and I need to be in better health to do it.
I looooo-HOOOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOO-ve how respectful and non-judgemental and considerative your videos are!
(also: salt! pleaaase cover salt! I love very salty food so much and I have heard so many bad things but recently read that older reseach might be wrong/ not well done and even a lot of salt isn’t necessarily bad for you. I’d love to hear from you!)
Just stopped eating the real good icecream every day = almost 1200 calories a day habit. It’s been a month and I’m doing fine. But I will stress that I’m 60,5’10,215lbs. But I workout with free weights and even do deadlifts. I’m about 15 over weight around my mind section. Also cut out 3 slices of bread a day, only have one with my egg whites and coffee for breakfast, no sugar. So I will see how long it takes to get rid of this 15 pounds.
I quit sugar 3 days ago and started walking 20 min a day + watching my meals portion and focusing more on protein, I weighed 104.9 kg 3 days ago and now at 101.9 kg, all scaled at the same times of the day with a clean bowel, bloating is gone and I can breath better. So 102 more days and I will gain invisibility powers.
I needed this. Thank you so much for this video, new sub beautiful hair btw
Dr Mona can you plz make a video on what vegan ingredients we should be avoiding on meats, chicken, cheese, sour cream, sausages, bacon, etc and y?
Thank you
Stevia drops works great for me, been using it for years. Also I eat fruit in the morning! Seems to improve my gut health and satisfy sweet cravings.
You know I thought I couldn’t live without breads and pastries lol turns out I had Coeliac disease and was asymptomatic (the digestive issues hadn’t kicked in yet!) I was sooooooo hungry!!! I swear I could have eaten a whole loaf of bread in one sitting if I wanted. Keep in mind I also have to keep away from gambling and stuff like that, no lotto tickets or anything, I become obsessed with it lol
Happy Holiday Season my friends!! Today I am sharing some tips to help crave those sugar cravings and yes!! I would love to hear what you have to add down in the comments below. XO-Dani
I don’t have any sugar products in my home. 80% of my meals are oven cocked or boiled. Never buy things inside a package, except pasta that I need for the gym. I only drink water, tea, and very occasionally beer or wine and in small amounts (one can of beer per week). I never go to fast food restaurants, and I take a pizza once every month/two months (not burguers). I feel so much better, that I considerer all the fast and process food companies as a criminals that make the people addicted and building to them a very bad health with time. Your hormon and metabolic system is not a joke. Honor and respect your body, you don’t have another. Never is late to change. You deserve it.
This rings so true for me. I’ve been on an intuitive eating journey for a while now. I always thought I was addicted to sugar, because I craved it literally all the time. Other people would tell me when they did low carb diets or sugar fasts that the cravings disappeared after a few days, but for me they never did! I would hoard candy and ice cream and always had a hidden chocolate stash. I’ve been working through a lot of my food control issues and learning that food is just food, it’s not good or bad. And wouldn’t you know it… I don’t like sugary food that much anymore. When it comes time for dessert, often I just don’t want it. I never in a million years thought that would happen! If I do want it, I go ahead and eat it, and usually I am satisfied with just a little bit. Mind-blowing!!!
Three weeks out of the month I’m fine around food. But that one week… you know the one… it’s a completely different story! Please talk about food and hormones. Especially PMS.
Hello Mona, i always crave for sugar… for example i have four chocolate bars in a day and i keep on going. Also, i tend to drink a lot of tea… what can i do to stop this.? xx
I appreciate this analysis. I also have nagging questions that I’d love the scientific community to thoroughly be able to answer through further research. The variables of restrictions for the sugar water with each group of rats is fascinating to me. But I think that is too controlled of a subject and circumstance to fully grasp the human relationship to sugar. Humans have added dynamics that I don’t know if they would yield similar results as compared to nearly affectless rats. We exist in an emotional state as humans. And there are facets of our behaviors, cultures, and relationships that drastically effect our relationship with food. There is a mental health crisis running through society, rooted largely in emotional suppression, both in person-to-person relationships and within a broader power structure that neglects accountability with immense, lasting consequences. I know people, and am a person, who, without hyperbole, will eat my feelings. Not because I set a restriction on sugar. But because I grew up in a household and in a culture that didn’t allow emotional outlet, and I regularly witnessed and suffered a multi-generational toxicity that buried problems and turned to food, for me mostly sugar, for happiness. Without question. There are behaviors, CAPITALISM, impediments, social standards, MISERY…. so many fucking things that effect humans in ways that I don’t think we’ve adequately monitored or even begun to grasp in this field, let alone that could be compared with a rodent’s existence or relationship to a vice.
Yes, this totally makes sense. It goes along with so many theories. That food is food, not good or bad. That if you’re craving something, eat it. Because I’ve found that denying yourself leads to overeating. Everything in moderation. You can eat a brownie, just not an entire pan of brownies. I’m really digging this trusting your body, intuitive eating!
I‘m not sure how to handle sugar with my kids (4 and 7). athey literally get up in the morning and it‘s one of the first questions they ask: do we get some sweets? They don‘t (unless it‘s their birthday or x-mas season), except maple sirup in their porridge or j on their toast. They usually get to have one sweet throughout the day and sometimes chocolat covered rice cakes or when we have visitors or go for a visit there are a lot of exceptions I realize. Is that may be the problem? I feel very strongly that I habe to resteict their access to sweets because they would not stop otherwise… what is the best approach to sugar and kids? Thanks
you are so right!!..i have abstained from sugar, starches and carbs…I had an italian icee….I binged..i ate 12 packs of the ice cream!..so i have experienced this addition.
I get it sugar is very difficult for us to ween off but trust and believe it is an addiction and it is in just about EVERYTHING we eat! A change of lifestyle is in order. Monk Sweetener is a sugar alternative you may want to try.
You must live in Texas because I saw some stuff from H.E.B
Jesus! Your timing is dead on. I have had a problem since the year after my dad died and we were super strapped for cash. We struggled hard and i can’t seem to shake this panic I feel when I go on a diet that the food will disappear…
I can’t start eating healthy without quitting sugar first. I found two ways that only works: frozen peanut butter banana bites (natural peanut butter) and second is plain yogurt with fresh (or frozen) fruits (no sugar added at all). Either one of them, it takes me a week to curb sugar, then I can go without any snacks or treats. It works for me. I tried fruits alone to satisfy but it wasn’t enough. It makes sense that you need to add protein to assist.
I don’t recommend quitting Diet Coke if you drink it often (daily) cold turkey. I stopped cold turkey (I was obsessed and drank it everyday) and ended up having 30 days of rashes and fevers due to aspartame withdrawal.
Maybe you could do a video on intuitive eating with food allergies and other medically necessary food restrictions.
What do you think about special cases where there is an overgrowth of Candida and a craving for sugar?
In Europe is much easier to do. Our groceries dont have hidden sugar. Sorry fellow americans, your food industry is screwing you big time.
i love that sweater Abbey, it looks so good on you! it’s so festive as well, good choice! ♥
Meh. I still cannot have ice cream in the house. I just have to get a single serving whenever I want it. If there is a pint of it in the house, I will eat it all.
This is so interesting. I was diagnosed with coeliac disease in 2009 and i before that i never really struggled with overeating. But now that i feel like loads of foods are off limits and special because i can never have gluten, i find that im “treating” myself everytime i find a gluten free version of something that i used to love, and i over do it. I wonder how to get around this feeling of restriction when obviously I can’t start just eating whatever i want.
I seriously don’t understand the dislikes! Sounds like people are jealous. You’re awesome! Love your vids.
Nice video, Dani. My 2 go to sweet snacks are either an apple (sometimes steamed) with cinnamon or a blend of raisins, dark chocolate and cacao nibs. My biggest problem is emotional eating though. So when the craving strikes I can’t help myself. Are you planning a video on this topic soon? Would love to learn something new.
No it does not exist other than in your head.
In the past I’ve been very heavily addicted to nicotine & IV 4-MMC, it was very far from fun overcoming these.
Food is NOT the same.
I tried the green beans tip…IT’S CRAZY HOW WELL IT WORKED! Thanks Christina!!! Keep the tips coming!
This absolutely checks out, because I started my intuitive eating journey back when I worked in a place where people would buy us donuts all the time, and my response to the donuts was usually indifferent unless I actually wanted one. Not gonna lie, if someone brought my favorite I would probably grab it and try eating it anyway but I always stopped the moment it became unappetizing.
Nearly everyone else would stare at the donuts hungry, swearing up and down that they shouldn’t because they’re “trying to eat healthy” for a decent amount of time before taking a half, and then the other half, and then another half donut because screw it they already “cheated”.
I am gonna eat one meal a day and dont eat sugar for 30 days.wish me luck!
PS:I will answer you
I’m sorry I’ve tried Zevia it taste like alka seltzer! Unless I tried the wrong kind!
thank god I cut sugar and carbs. UR HELPING ME ALOT WIHT UR ADVICES THANK YOU.
I can not eating sugar, but just for one day
After that….
Dr Oz is so melodramatic. Every guest, every plan get’s over-the-top gushing. Having said that, I periodically check out the video clips.
I’ve been recovering from the restrictive/binge cycle and finally was able to step outside my disordered thinking and worked with a Registered Dietician that had training with Eating disorders. I used to restrict because I believed that I couldn’t handle certain foods mentally.
After I gave up restrictive behaviors and stepped into mindfulness behaviors around food, I’ve really progressed mentally and emotionally!! I had to relearn how to gage hunger and listen to my body and what felt good to eat and not what I should or shouldn’t eat. It’s been a journey and learning hasn’t been linear, but I’m recovering and learning how to listen to my body and am better aware of my emotions now and how to sooth myself outside food.
Listening to and engaging with IE information really helps me reset my mentality. Thank you for sharing and helping!
As an oncology nurse also obtaining my NP degree I greatly appreciate your performed research in order to better discuss the topic at hand ❤️
Hi Abbey, I love your videos. Could you do one about tips and foods to eat and avoid when there is gastritis and/or acid reflux. I have it really bad and medicines can only help me for a few weeks at a time.
Eliminating sugar from your diet takes away all food cravings. Try it! In 3 days your appetite is gone. Gone. Totally gone.
Could you please explain the difference between binge eating and food addiction?
