Non US endocrinology resident, so…. our daily bread and butter is dealing with consults from IM who seem to consult on any single diabetes pt or any glucose above 100 which otherwise would be fine if not for the fact that we spent so much time chasing down nurse charts to scribble down POC glucose (paper charts only, sorry for the minor rant)
Kid you not most of consults are something like this: Pt x y/o diabetic, endocrinology evaluation solicited….. that's all!
What should you suggest we do to improve the system? It worries me because IM seems to be getting no training whatsoever on diabetes, I know specialties exist for a reason but it is called internal medicine for a reason IMO And secondary to that what do you do with less than ideal consults in US?
Edit: can an endocrinologist chime in how a proper diabetes consult would look like in say a developed country? I want to believe there's more than waste time scribbling down glucose values with a pen (which supposedly makes helps you to familiarize with the patient……..)
