Excellent recipe. Just tried it. I also put it in mini cast iron pans and it worked.
Wow seems very interesting and easy to make, definitely like it
Your just trying to be polite about the way we’ve been making pancakes is wrong…(I hate you $19 crepe machine, I hate you)
It’s a big yorkshire pudding. Yum. Or a clafoutis without the fruit. Yum.
Lovely been craving this and so happy i saw your video God bless u babe
I wonder if Dan could ask “right?” a few more times? Right? ugh.
As a German here is a fun fact…
In the south, what we call a pancake is basically a thicker crepe. Then there is something like a jam filled donut (but without the hole in the middle) which we call Berliner.
In Berlin / the area around it, what we call Berliner is called a pancake and what we call pancake here, is called egg cake there.:D
However I have never seen the pancake like the one in the video and it looks so amazing!
Made this for the kids today and they loved them. Great recipe. Thank you
Love Dutch baby pancakes…..have tried many recipes and this one has the most eggs I It I’ve ever seen. Will have to try it!
Did I miss what temperature the oven should be? Looks easy and delicious. Want to try this. Thanks.
I first had a Dutch baby when I visited San Diego, at this cute little restaurant,. Blew my mind. I love it. Hopefully I can make this. Thanks for the video
Turned out very good, I may of overheated the cast iron before butter and didn’t do great job clarifying. Bottom almost burnt but a good contrast.
Looking forward to the “hearty” version next with Bacon and Asparagus.
Thank You
Dutch baby pancake? That’s what I call my boyfriend Dustin’s butthole!
I have made this twice in the last week.I’m not a big fan of regular pancakes because they are so heavy but this little number was so light I truly was tempted to eat the whole thing. I also like the fact that it wasn’t overly sweet. Can’t wait to make it for my girls when they come home to visit. Thanks for all your yummy recipes and keep on sending them our way. God bless
I made my first one today and it was OK very easy to make but very little flavor. I ended up topping it with some blueberries I had on hand.
Lol, his speech pattern makes me irrationally angry. Its like he records one sentence at a time and then pastes it all together. I like the content though, so I will get over it.
Oh. My. Sweet. Dutch. Baby. Jesus. I just made this and it was awesome!
I added fresh fruit, cinnamon and whipped cream or philly cream. It was awesome!
You can also pour everything into the blender. (Your Dutch Baby Batter should really sizzle in the pan.)
“wow! every time I see it I think it’s even bigger than the last time!”
Looks delish, I grew up on these German Pancakes as mom called them. We’d slice it like a pizza and sprinkle with powdered sugar and also drizzle some lemon juice on. great vid thx…
I did regular pancakes with caramel apples
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OWEeXeBfRs so decided to try them in combination.
Dear, my Dutch grandma taught to make pancakes. She taught me to start with whisking the eggs first. Whisk until there are bubbles. Then add the milk and flour little by little whilst whisking. Again keep whisking until bubbles form. She always said, “The more bubbles, the more air in the pancakes”. I am going to try your version too ♡ Lots of liefs from Amsterdam ♡
Mine NEVER rise up on the sides like yours. I’m going to try your recipe with the apples on the side, I’ve always cooking them in the batter. Very impressive presentation.
I used two mini skillets and it worked flawlessly. Thank you.
They look so good, I’m gonna be annoying and ask if anyone knows the calories and or nutrients for these lol sorry x
Thank you for this very nice recipe!! I had never heard of it, but now will try it.
They’re also known as German pancakes. I eat the whole freaking pancake whenever I visit a Elmers.
Well, the Germans that settled in Pennsylvania are called Dutch Germans. Don’t ask me why. They created this wonderful baby.
Can I use plain flour? Thanks for sharing Beth. Stay safe. From .
….from my POV…the viewer, because of the set lighting…I love how the orange bowl off to my left sometimes produces a SMILE…..:)……..or a FROWN….. (:…….check it out….so appropos for Jen’s kitchen. Keep up your Good ‘Work”, Jen. It was because of you that I finally made excellent bread by your vids on No Knead and my dutch oven…thanx a zillion!! Now I will try the rolls…..and gnocci….and on and on….
Just made this this morning. Whole family loved it, even my pickiest eater. Fantastic and super easy! And I am not a good cook. Thanks for the video.
I made this once and I’ll probably make it at least once in a week…Thank you for that great recipe
Well………..first you take 2 Dutch people, a male and female……
“you gotta pay attention to the ratios” then proceed to measure dry ingredients by VOLUME?? Really??
I’m Dutch and I never saw this in my whole life haha. But it looks so good and I’m going to try this Recipe for sure!! I always love your recipes Beth! ❤️
Made these for my breakfast this morning and they were simply delicious! What an excellent idea please keep coming up with such wonderful recipes like this. Xx
I have been making german pancakes for years. However, the last few times I have made these they are not fluffing up into a bowl. They come out super flat. Is it the all purpose flour I am using?
Who is the artist singing the song at the end of this video? It’s so catchy!! Love it
My voice goes UP & Down…Up AND down……Uppppp thennn Down
Substitutes of spelt flour?? Can we use whole wheat cuz I live in India and we have whole wheat flour and u use a lot of spelt flour in ur videos so if I can use whole wheat flour do tell me.
Thank you. Nice. Good. Must let’s bring it down an octave and drop the sing-song.
Companies have lied over the years about non stick like Teflon so I do not buy non stick.
I am dutch but don’t know this. We have other pancakes though
It’s a baked batter mix, we use the same mix for Yorkshire puddings or pancakes.
The rest is just sweet or savoury additions like fruit and cream, or roast beef, vegetables, and gravy. Delicious!:)
All that talking about healthy, but you eat sugar like it’s going out of style. Sugar is two things:Junk and a poison. Sugar is neither a condiment nor a food. Find out about it.
This is the first Dutch Baby video, you just made a new one.:D
Just had this recipe pop up. I love the German pancake but have never tried one with apple. Will have to get an apple to try it!
Looks really good Jim, I’m going to try this recipe right now!
Definitly gonna try these. A way healthier version of our German ‘Apfelküche’:)
that looks so delicious and easy to prepare going to give it a try. Thanks Jim for the video.
..
Don’t have sugar just moved but thx sooooo much! Also I’m a Draper KID Sadie to be exact a big fan I love baking so thx!
Brown sugar is nothing more than white sugar with a few drops of molasses
I love that you use cast iron. I inherited my grandma’s Griswold cast iron pans and they’re probably about 75 years old.
was für äpfel hast du verwendet? manche werden ja in der pfanne weicher als andere:)
Thank U kindly beloved Beth for your perfect recipe, enjoy a perfect slice of rich and deliciousness everytime I make it to share with friends. I am your raving fan. You’re beautiful InsideOut. Be well and peace be with you amid this temporarily crisis.
I think it’s not worth the time and effort. So many other ways to enjoy breakfast.
Hi, what size of the pan would be good for this amount of batter please?
I’m Dutch and totally confused about what this is xD never heard of it but it looks amazing!
Made it this morning! I added vanilla extract. Taste a little eggy kind of like french toast. But it was good with some powdered sugar and syrup on top.
What brand is the oven? I want one with ball bearing racks and rounded back! Thanks!
Someone on my CIC FB page posted a link to this video. Was my first time making it, first time trying it… OMG its AMAZING!!! Thankyou!!
To save time and money heating up the skillet put it on the stove top first before putting it in the oven.
wow Mat, that was so simple and short I had to watch it twice caused I blinked. lol:)
what should i put on these, syrup butter, etc.
great video btw
as a german, this has pretty much nothing to do with German pancakes…
Hey Whistledick!………….thanks for the “OCD” video on how to make a very simple streudel,…………………..do not quit yer day job,…………putz!
That was the best German pancake I’ve ever seen. Of course it was Dan who made it. I definitely will be trying this one soon.
Great Dutch baby…so light and fluffy! Your right, it’s screaming for fruit! Yummy! Thanks Jenny!
It’s 3 in the morning and I’m starving, looks like I won’t be sleeping amytime soon
The recipe for popovers I inherited from my mother (and I’m 71 years old) calls for using a well-buttered non-stick muffin pan, and putting them into a cold oven and setting it to 450, and they pop beautifully. I like the crispy tops 😉
I do what Julia does with a peeler. I buy the old peelers at the hardware store.
I am not Dutch so I would have to do deeds with a Dutch.
But the video does not show the instructions for that.
I have had this in the Netherlands, very yummy! German pancakes these are certainly not. But perhaps, like German chocolate cake, there is a historical reason for calling it German.
I know i’m late but this is not german pancake. Because i’m from germany and no one is making this ever is a dutch baby (dutch) is not a blame i’m just mad that alot of People think that dutch and germany are the same contry no we are not but still nice video.
Wow I found this channel when I was watching people troll scam callers and now I’m using it to make breakfast lol. You’re awesome, Jim!!
I tried this recipe and my family loves it! It’s a Sunday favorite in our house!
i love to mix vegan yoghurt with some nut butter and then dip my pancakes in that. IT IS SO YUMMY!
Made this but didn’t use your recipe. Will use it next time..the recipe I followed had too many eggs. Nice of you to cook for your wife:)
You said 30 minutes per side you didn’t mean that did you? I have some fresh fall Maine apples which we are known for and they would be awesome in this recipe so I think I will make it tomorrow! I hope they freeze because I’m going to need to freeze them. Yet again, mind blown.:-):-)
Thanks for the video Jim. I’ve been looking for a recipe like this where the batter isn’t really thin or comes out to puffy. Excited to try you ratio of ingredients!!!!!!!
Great idea, I always love your recipes, thank you and keep up the great work!
I made German pancakes much the same way for my kids when little. I cut up peaches or apples, put that on top of the hot buttered pan. Sprinkled some cinnamon and sugar then poured batter on top and baked
Serious question; how come you’re calling it baking? Isn’t it fried?
What size skillet are you using for this quantity of batter?
Easy understand English for me. I’m from Malaysia. Tq so much
I made it. OMG, turned out perfectly. Couldn’t get over how high it got.
Most importantly, everyone loved it. I had heard of these, but never had one. I’ll be making more.
Thanks
Seems very tasty! I would like to ask how many cm is the skillet you used for the pancake?
Thank you and, yes, I have all the ingridients at home. lol, very easy!
This looks good but as a German I have never seen this before and it seems like I ain‘t the only one
The Brits are going crazy. “That’s a Yorkshire pudding”!, I can almost hear.
you say you need to be careful about ratios.. and then you measure everything by volume?
Write It down! Jenny is the best!
Some would say; Jenny is a GOAT! GREATEST of ALL TIME!
I figured I should clarify it, (goat), like butter.:)
German here. Whatever this is, it doesn’t have anything to do with a German pancake. German pancakes are more like thicker crepes.
However, this looks like an American copy of Austrian Kaiserschmarrn.
Beth, can you please share with us delicious salmon recipes? I love salmon, but I want to know about more ways to cook it. Thank you!:)
Thanks, ATK.. You’re amazing as you make me want to make dishes I’ve never heard of and a German pancake is one, and boy does it have a wow factor. I’d try it with a blueberry sauce instead of apples.
I just made one from your recipe. I’m so proud of myself. I bake NOTHING from scratch normally but you made it seem so simple. And it was. Thank you! I love it.
I travel quite a bit and have seen these on several menus in U.S. restaurants but they were always called Dutch Baby. I never noticed German pancake for some reason. Nonetheless, very tasty.
Apple custard pie for breakfast! Yum! Make sure to add some maple syrup!
Do you eat these with maple syrup like a pancake? Or as is, in which case I might add a little sweetener to the berries or powder sugar over it all. Muah
Miss out the sugar and vanilla and you have a yokshea pudding.
God, a lot ( BUT NOT ALL) of these comments are all the same… RUDE AND INCONSIDERATE! Did you not have your mama teach you manners?! “I HATE nutmeg! I put bla blah bla in mine” ” them aren’t ‘dutch babies’ its ‘Yorkshire pudding'” ” I am Dutch and I ‘ve NEVER heard of this before” “mine are way better cause bla bla bla!” and don’t even start me on that comment about having a housekeeper.
YOU GUYS ARE RUDE! AND IDK WHICH GROUP OF U ARE SADDEST: THOSE WHO KNOW THEIR BEING A-HOLES OR THE ONES WHO DONT!
If someone could help me with this, that would be amazing.
I tried making this and i have 2 comments.
1. I ended up putting the heat to low since some turned out a bit black
2. The batter did not attach properly to the apples in the pan. When i wanted to turn them they got loose though the batter was wel cooked. I wonder if anyone has a tip for next time.
Why do I keep getting ads for how to wash “period panties” before cooking videos?
My father loves these so I made them for him.
He happy.
Wait
Dutch baby.
German pancake.
wHat?
I bake for 15 minutes at 425 and top off with pie filling and powdered sugar.
How to Make Dutch Babies
get a Dutch man and a Dutch woman, get them some naughty time and you get a Dutch baby xD
Do you need to use 6 eggs or can you use 4 instead? Does this change anything?
Finally, someone who calls them what they actually ARE German pancakes!!
Jenny don’t worry what any one says as I always say when someone feels the need to act ugly I won’t be losing any sleep over it you go girl there’s always that one
I’m German and I’m pretty sure this is not how our pancakes look like
The way I do it in my family (my great grandma found a recipe on a paper in her village), is we put the batter on the pan, make sure it touches the whole base of the pan. Then, we take it out, butter it, put on powder sugar, then roll it up (like an omolette) and then put on a little more powdered sugar!
I love the look of the German pancake and would love to have some of them each morning with my eggs, sausage, and hash browns. The way you all cook such delicious food I would love to be there to taste test all you all cook up and be your guinea pig.
Could it work with just egg whites/ no yolks? What adjustments could be made to compensate?
They look sooo yummy, I think I’ll make them on the weekend! And I’m gonna top them with looots of cinnamon because cinnamon just makes everything better (especially apples ) and maybe some yoghurt would be tasty with those…Can’t wait to try them, thanks for the recipe! ♥
great recipe, thank you, I am making this in the morning. So easy, so nice and in a few minutes! And so cute little song. What is it?
YOU. ARE. ADORABLE. I am definitely going to try your recipe!! Thanks for showing us how easy it can be to make this
Your dry ingredient measurements should be stated in ounces or grams in addition to volume.
Sorry man, your cadence and talking style really drives me nuts. Not leaving a dislike or anything though.
Can’t wait to make this, & so simple! The other pancake recipe was awesome too, those were delicious!:-)
Oh could you make something like a French mushroom soup thing? its white and has mushrooms in it I had them in La Madeline and its so good! I don’t know the name of the soup though..
I will make this for breakfast today!
Keep ’em coming!!
Funny how you use 1% fat milk but then add all that sugar to it. If you’re trying to stay healthy keep the real milk and get rid of the sugar.
I’ve seen this one twice before but I don’t really mind. The world needs more Dutch babies.
We loved this! Fresh bananas and blueberries on top. Yum, the best breakfast ever!
That looks good Jenny! I used to watch your show when I was a temnager! Sending you lots of love and Aloha!
I’m a purist. No fruit, just powered sugar and squeeze lemon on it. Yummm
Ingredients:
1 cup 1% milk
3 eggs
1 cup all purpose flour
2 Tablespoons sugar
1/8 teaspoon salt
pinch of nutmeg
a stick of butter (for greasing pan)
1 Tablespoon powdered sugar (for garnish)
Fresh fruit

Return immediately to oven and bake for about 15 minutes or until the edges are golden and poufy.Carefully slide the pancake onto a large serving plate, lifting the edges with a spatula. Dust with powdered sugar and add fruit.
I’m on lock down but I’m having this for breakfast tomorrow.
Babies always taste better.
Don’t get mad at me, I don’t make the rules.
I really love the way you give details make me feel like I can do this.
One thing is shore. They aint German. Because I am Dutch and surtenly Not German.
uugghhh this looks so good!!! can’t wait to have them for breakfast Saturday!!
I tried making this but it didn’t rise and puff up like that, it just laid flat like an american flap Jack smh lol
Wonderful video, thanks so much for teaching us. I only hope mine cancome out the same way.. Thanks again!
I didnt know those are for sharing. I ordered it at a restaurant and when i was done with it, i felt so heavy i swore i would never do it again
I love the message of a lot of these videos, but the execution of this show in particular is really off-putting. It feels so awkwardly rehearsed that I can’t even focus on what is being created. Even if extensive editing is required, I think it would be worth it to make the video feel more seamless. As it is, it makes me not want to finish the video.
Oh darn missed pulling it out of the oven, best part, sorry to put a thumbs down but I’m disappointed, I like your personality nice try
So what happens if you drop some blueberry on top of the wet and frying batter and then bake? Too wet?
yumminess explosion thx as always for sharing such a wonderful recipe
Mine is in the oven right now and the kettle is on the stove.
I put it on very high heat and just started a fire and almost burned the house down…
We should start a pool where we bet on how many angry Germans complain that this isn’t German and how many boastful Brits insist that it’s just a yorkshire pudding.
Really enjoy your channel and thanks for the amounts of ingredients I always write that down good always looks good and you have a great t personality
Hello Jenny from the UK, I think your brilliant, I have been watching your videos for quite a few years and I love them all.. I have make your no knead bread a lot during this lock down. This Dutch baby is such a yummy recipe I eat it for breakfast lol. Thank you for all your videos. Keep safe and take care
I love theses Dutch babies……my ingredients are a little different however, if you heat your pan on stove top to very hot add the butter and then the batter, let cook on stove top for a minute or so, then place that in the oven I find it cooks better! I have never added sugar and I put 3 eggs. And 1/3 cup less milk, I’m trying your recipe…..thank you!
I have tried this recipe and the dough is always raw even though the outside is brown and I can’t leave it in longer because it will burn
Just aired on PBS, no joy getting recipe, locked unless you want to go that free $$ route.
Beth your channel is my favorite on YouTube. Great recipes very classy
I have it in the oven as I write at 450 degrees as per your written instructions. Then, I reviewed the video and you say 400. Which is it? Guess I’ll find out in about 10 minutes:(
Yum..and so easy! Love your new intro music Beth, did you gave it commissioned and written just for your channel?
Hey mat! Keep making YouTube videos. I love the way you teach. Thank you for helping me make German pancakes for my son’s first Easter.
I would swap agave for maple and drizzle more maple over the top. Will definitely be making these thank you ☺
I made this and it turned out great. Its just that 17 minutes is a little bit less
Can I just use oven safe ramekins to make individual pancakes?
This looks amazing already and I’m not even done with the video! Thanks Jim. Will be using this recipe during these times.
I was married to a Finn so we made this too. It was called Pannu Kakku… basically, pan cake. Made very much the same, except, I think it had melted butter in it, some sugar, and some coarse flour. Sometimes toward the end of the month, we had it for dinner. Yum! I have to find a plant based recipe. I miss it.
I love your recipes very much, but i’m dying to know which song is playing at the end of this youtube Video. Can you please help me?
I will be eating one tonight so I’ll see if I can get an apple cinnamon caramel at the pancake house.
It’s basically “Kaiserschmarn” which is quite common in Southgermany(Bavaria, Swabia) and Austria.
Thank you very much for sharing your wonderful cake Mr Foremam
Thanks it turned out just the way you people did it, and i enjoyed it very much, the only thing is, I didnt get any syrup with my apples, it all cooked away. But it all tasted very good
It’s this epic recipe that made me throw away my lame collection of non stick pans to invest in 3 cast iron skillets, I cherish you for this dear Chef ❤️
Looks delicious, but does anybody know why this recipe is named Dutch Baby Pancake?
Thanks, Jennie. I love your recipes. Hope you’re enjoying your retirement.
I made this. It came out nice. Made it a 2nd time with cinnamon and it didn’t rise, just stayed flat.
Can I use a 12′ inch cast iron skillet. If so, would i have to double the ingredients?
Thanks
This is a Yorkshire pudding with a bit of vanilla, something many Yorkshire folk do as a desert. So why call it a Dutch Baby? Oh and its great with thick sugar syrup or even maple syrup. Call it what you like but its a Yorkshire pudding.
these would be so cute in those little single-serve skillets you get!
“To make a Dutch baby, you need two things”
A Dutch sperm and a Dutch egg huehue
I was watching videos in this just yesterday I think they’re reading my YouTube history
WHO IN THEE HELL uses a metal knife on their $200 Staub skillet??? Who? Dang sure not me! Arggg!♀️
This was amazing, fun, and easy to make. I was sceptical at first while making it but this was spot on
This is my favorite recipe for Dutch Babies. I tried several others, but this one had better taste and less eggy custard on the bottom. It’s so good with the traditional lemon and powdered sugar. I’ve started adding whipped cream with blackberries. Decadent! Messy but fun to eat:)
A Rose by any other name is often called a Yorkshire Pudding. Ingredients ratio is the same.
It’s no mystery why you have almost half a million subscribers. You are awesome and the video is very enjoyable. I can’t wait to make this for myself. You’ve just earned a fan (and subscriber) for life.
When you notice the Sage/Breville espresso machine just from a sliver on screen, #coffeegeek
Today I made a sauce out of coffee and brown sugar then sliced up two large bananas for the baby.
Dutch Babies and German Pancakes are 2 different things. Just as dutch and German are not the same. I am German. And no one here knows this dish. We have German Pancakes but they are a different thing. The thing you made is more similar to a british dish called Yorkshire pudding. Well there are a lot of things americans make and say they are from somewhere but they are really from somewhere else. So German Pancakes is something different.
I don’t have a cast iron pan but I still love watching you. You’re always good for a laugh, and you don’t mind poking fun at yourself. And I don’t notice that you screw up until you tell us. I like to think that I laugh with you and not at you. Can you do a Q&A sometime? I’d like to know if Michelle likes to cook and what’s her favorite dish of yours? I don’t get notifications on this device so I won’t know if you answer.
Cold oven strategies only work for pancake #1. Got a family? ATK…. dumb…
where did you guy your cast iron pan? i want to try this recipe but need to get a cast iron pan first.
I hate it when the print version is different than video. 1/4 C butter vs 3 T.
I’m telling you, I lived in Germany for 4 years and i can assure you that this is not a German pancake. At least it looks nothing like what I used to eat there, and yes that called it pancakes. If you want true German pancakes look up “Deutche Pfannkuchen” (“German pancakes” in German.
Went to the Netherlands and no one told me about this. I feel betrayed.
This is an interesting recipe but I never have problems cooking my apple in the pan with the batter.
Ingredients for 4 small or 2 large portions:
3 large room temperature eggs
2/3 cup room temperature milk
packed 1/2 cup flour (really pack the measuring cup firmly with flour)
1/4 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 tsp salt
3 tbsp clarified butter
Bake at 425 F. 20-25 min
* garnish with melted butter, fresh lemon juice (Meyer if you can find it), and powdered sugar.
Who else thought the child was cutting the apples cuz her hands so small then I realized it was her hands. Recipe looks great.
ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME IF YOU TRIED THIS RECIPE AND NONE OF THE MEASUREMENTS DID NOT WORK AT ALL AND THE WHOLE THING THE EXACT WAY SHE SAID DOES NOT TURN OUT IN ANY WAY LIKE THE VIDEO SHOWS! The almond milk is not enough, the batter is too much for just 2-3 apples, the coconut oil is not enough and the recipe makes apples that separate from the batter and make a mess! I follow recipes all the time and it always works out! This does not at all. There is no way that the recipe she gave is what she used in the video. NO WAY. I just wasted a lot of food. And time. And money. I tried 3x, used two different pans (in case it was the pan!) At best they are oily with half the batter gone and not that good. It does not look like the video at all.:( i will be looking elsewhere for this recipe.
Thanks for a recipes this one,is my favorite with a lemon of course, yummyyyyyyyyyyy
Being able to make something like this, with few ingredients and simple instructions, is just invaluable. Many of your recent videos have been similarly great. Thanks so much! You’re making this dad look like a superstar, ha!
is she the girl from the meme where she pores a crap tone of vodka and says 2 shots
In the UK we have this but it’s called a Yorkshire pudding and is usually served as a savoury dish with gravy and other roast foods.
Wow, another great breakfast! I like anything made in a cast iron skillet!
The only thing that would make that better is a drizzle of honey over it!
sorry we Germans don´t know this as German pancakes, we don´t know this at all. this is no way PAN cakes. it is ovencake
German pancakes are not “poofy” they are thin and crawl up the side of the pan.
Don’t peel them! That’s where all the antioxidants are!!! Esp if you’re using oil, lol! They look beautifully delicious!!! I’ll have to try this sometime. Love your channel, you’re awesome:)
You weren’t joking, they are basically the same thing! That looks amazing, I gotta give it a try. Love when recipes have basic ingredients and are super simple to make
I love those pancakes, but I never thought of doing them together as i have always cooked them separately! something new to try! thanks!
I’m married to a german well done we just serve ours as is with a light dust of icing sugar and some strawberries
My cousin showed me how to make these many years ago, but she never told me the name of it. NOW I KNOW! It is delicious with apple slices that have been heated in butter and cinnamon sugar. Put these cinnamon apple slices inside the finished Dutch Baby Pancake and eat. YUM!!!
I know I’m a little late to the party but thank you for this, everyone made it seem like you can’t make these if you don’t have a cast iron pan, this was very helpful and I thank you!
Hi Jim! I’ve tried other recipes on You Tube. Yours is the best. Simple, easy, and not too many eggs. Just right for me! thanks Jim.
Do i have to use a skillet? is there any substitution? I don’t have a skillet and would love to try this recipe:)
Best pancakes i’ve ever had!!! Thanks so much for this recipe
For those of you in this comment stream debating the name and origin of this cake, a “German pancake” is a “Dutch baby pancake” ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_baby_pancake ). It is similar to Knieküchle ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kniek%C3%BCchle (EN) / https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kniek%C3%BCchle (DE)). And for you Germans here who say that you have never seen anything like this, just remember that German immigrants first came to America over a hundred years ago, long before you were even born, and that some old dishes can no longer be found in modern-day German cuisine.
Hey Jenny… we call this Krupsua up here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. aka Finnish Pancake. Some call it Pannukaku too, but my Grampa Tuominen called it Krupsua… and yup, it has been a family favorite for generations.
P.S. Please ignore the haters; they really are just miserable, useless, lost morons with too much time on their hands. Love your recipes, love your videos, loved your talk show… and LOVE YOU!!
damn, I almost miss the last sentence -and as always, enjoy! -best little singing ever:)
Thanks cheff!
I mean.. I clicked because it looks awesome but I don’t know why this clip is so comical. I just laughed my way through.
Love this recipe. First time to make dutch babies & it turned out right the first time❤
I have few favorite Chefs you are one of them!
I like all your recipes and the way you present them!
Any pointers for those of us with standing pilots? Our oven sits at about 90º when off, and, I’m guessing, climbs in temperature much faster than electric. My plan on the next go ’round is to raise the temp by 70º every 5 minutes until 375° is attained, which hypothetically will give us 375° for the last 10 minutes.
this is what i did for the batter recipe: i just used the pancake mix and used applesauce soymilk cinnamon and ur done
Wait you didn’t say what you put the wet ingredients in?? Looks like some type of flour
Made this today for breakfast, it was a hit all around! I added some cinnamon and nutmeg into the batter and put some thinly sliced apple on top for the second half of the bake, cinnamon in the powdered sugar to finish. Thanks Beth!:-)
I make my German pancakes in a pie dish. Dusted with powdered sugar and fresh squeezed lemons.
This is such a nice idea! My kids would love these. Plus, they’re vegan! ^_^
Thanks Jim, that sure looks delicious. Will have to give them a try on the weekend.
You can get the Dutch Baby and a Apple Pancake at The Original Pancake House. The franchises in the Chicago area are Walker Bros Original Pancake House.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walker_Bros.?wprov=sfla1
Funnier than Alton and the food is the centerpiece. Good food too.
I grew up on German Pancakes. This is a nice variation on the method. Turns out great and tastes great. Thanks for the recipe!
NO NUTMEG! ehhh
Just do it w/o Nutmeg! Horrid taste! Cilaniro and Nutmeg are offensive to Rh(-) people like me.
ehhh ick! Use Vanilla and Butter or Powdered Sugar.
But she has done a most beautiful presentation of the dish. And its an accurately good recipe –
Yorkshire pudding, minus the sugar. You put roast drippings in the bottom pan and serve with a roast beef.
I really like your version. I kept picturing a custard going with the fruit. Yum, thanks for the idea.
Actually, this looks like a French clafoutis. But not something that is served in The Netherlands, Belgium or Germany.
Hey Nederlanders en Vlamingen, heeft die “Dutch baby” niet wat bruine suiker nodig? 😉
Omg YUM! I can’t wait to try these! As a new vegan, I’m always looking for new recipes:)
“you’ll be the one to decide what’s best for this delicious child”
I did the exact same steps (except adding a bit of cinnamon powder and using a square oven tray). It rose but did not rise like in the video. I stopped at 18 minutes.
Thanks for sharing! I will practice this more.
Ok so you got me on the cinnamon rolls, now I’ve got to make this.
Thank you. Your video was the most straight forward informative Dutch Baby recipe on YouTube! Others made tiny miniature skillet size ones or talked on and on without teaching me how to do it. Great job, and the Dutch baby was delicious. I used a glass pan and it worked fine.
This is the simplest and best Dutch baby recipe, ever! I have used it twice so far and made it for breakfast today. It’s quick, easy and most of all delicious! I add canned peaches to my mix is the only change! Thank you!
6:30 am Saturday morning in Michigan!..Just made mine! Only real difference…add a pinch of nutmeg (makes a big tasty difference)! And, use room temp eggs and milk AND the sugar in the batter is not necessary! You’re already going to add powdered sugar & syrup when done…don’t leave out the lemon!
LOVE ATK…. and love this recipe!! I have to cook and eat gluten free and really love your two GF cookbooks. by the way.. this works great with GF flour.. I did add about a half tsp of Xantham gum to the dry ingredients.
Made this for the kids lunch and they love it! My picky daughter says” Mom, this is really good and I can’t explain how good it is! Thank you for sharing your recipe! I think this will be a nice summer traditions from now on with my family.
I love your videos! Can you please make petit fours because I wanna see a foolproof recipe for my French project thank you so much!
Wow…I never thought about doing this….it looks real good
Great recipe! I used half a banana instead of applesauce and it turned out great.Vegan pancakes are a lot less scarier thank i thought! 😉
I would top that with fried honey, you take 2 tablespoons of butter melt it in small cast iron skillet then add 4 tablespoons of honey fry the honey in butter just a short time then drizzle over your fruit and pancake
Ok, so I made this for breakfast this morning and boy was it a huge hit. I’d watched a number of videos on this dish but decided on yours as you used a big pan and I was feeding 6! Well there was enough for double helpings and it the pan was cleaned. I did add the vanilla and sugar like you suggested but added peaches. It was heavenly! Thanks so much for a new forever dish!,
No baking powder? Looks like the pancake could rise more with it.
My favorite recipe! I always make it! So easy and delicious!
I’m dutch but NEVER seen this kinx of pancake and also dutch people never eat pancakes for breakfast they just eat it for dinner or snack
Haha, You know its American when he says “Just a little bit of sugar” then adds 3 tablespoons to that quite small quantity of flour.
These look delicious! I’ll have to try these.
Also, I love that Leaf style Bowl!
Yes hon been trying to bake the French Pascade, to no avail, this will do hon
I could see this served with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, sigh. We had a pancake house in my city that served apple dutch babies, that was a decadent desert and the best thing I have ever ate. Thank you Jenny, I think even I could do this. ❤️
Thanks for the recipe, looked delicious.
I did laugh at the beginning when it was said the ratios are important and then the ingredients are measured instead of weighed. I was taught to weigh when the ratios are important. But it looks like it worked, so who am I to judge.
Thanks for the recipe! First time trying was already a huge success!
Thanks so much for the recipe I just made it and it was delicious I am definitely making this tomorrow!
Shout to Linda Belcher, I wouldn’t know what a dutch baby was without her
Nom nom chomp chomp. Lol, I’m running to the kitchen to make that!
by the meaning flour, is it self-raising flour or just plain flour?
To make a Dutch baby, you need a Dutch woman and a Moroccan.
The only thing missing was either sweetened Ricotta, Creme Fraiche or even Whipped Cream
Also good sprinkled with cinnamon sugar along with apples and whipped cream.
I ate Dutch babies most of my life, too top it off and make it 505050505 times better, you can either dip or put a little sour cream on the pancake, then put some strawberry’s and bannans
Hey Matt,
I’m not a kid any more but I remember when my dear Mom made these for me when I was a young lad. Thanks for the memories.
I absolutly love you ladies and your team, Lisa and Adam and there gadgets. Priceless.
I am German and sorry, but I haven’t seen this in Germany at all. Pancakes overhere look more like Crepes, but they are more soften. Also they get backed in a Pan, that’s why they are called Pancakes. Other names are “Eierkuchen” or “Plinse”. There are many different recipies out there, e.g. with backing powder or buttermilk etc.
Here is the recipe I use and at least my family really likes it.
The magic number is 4.
4 eggs,
4 tabelspoons of flour and
1/4 liter (250ml) of milk, which I actually divide int 125ml milk (usually 1.5%) and 125ml of carbonated water (this will make the cake very fluffy like backing powder would do.
Mix all together, add a little salt and back in a pan with some vegetable oil, just lake crapes.
Than put sugar, apple souce or whatever you like on it, roll it and try.
I am sure you’ll love it too.
Jenny, can’t thank you enough. I really can’t cook but I’ve used your videos and everything I’ve tried has come out great. The only problem is I am gaining weight during the quarantine.
Your videos are absolutley great!! I love what you create in the kitchen, it inspired me alot. Keep up the amazing work and personality:D
I would put vegan chocolate on them, also a might talk about this video on my channel
Love your intro music, recipies and a story to boot on some of the vids. Great job. Cant wait to try this recipe too. I dont have such a great breakfast repertoire as you.
Maybe now I will use my cast iron skillet!! Thank you Jenny!!
Another one who doesn’t bother to tell you what size pan!! Made a dutch baby, obviously my pan was too small for the recipe. The center never cooked and the edges were already a dark brown
Like a weird sweet yorkshire pudding….
Dont get me wrong however, that’s not a bad thing! Mmmmm
Omg, I’ve made these pancakes yesterday and today, even used exactly this same bowl for my mixture only came across your channel today by accident. Great recipes!
I’ve been waiting for this recipe since you included them in your other video:)
That looks sooo yummy! I think I’d like to try it by itself☺️
I was always using 2% milk, then switched to skim milk because of the fat issue, then I find out they increase the Sugar when they decreased the fat!♀️
Because sugar is a problem,.. not diabetic,.. I have to be careful
A lot of your healthy deserts I want to try with Truvia a natural plant sweetener, because I’m driving myself crazy watching nummy stuff being made and I can’t have it♀️
Hi Beth, Is it possible to make this pancake on the stove? instead of using the oven? Thanks!
That’s not a german pancake
German pancakes are made in a PAN not in the Oven. You just fill up the hole pan with it (just so the floor of the pan is covered ) and that’s it. I‘ved Never saw a german do it like this .
(Im German BTW )
Thank you for sharing the recipe. I’m going to make them for the family this morning
Can someone please tell me what kind of knife he is using? And what is the brand name?
still dont get how this is diff from a yorkshire pudding. does anyone know. great vid!
They look amazing!
Do you think you’d be able to do these with pineapple? I’m out of apples and desperately want to try them.
I’m making them the second time, in a gluten free version, but I always feel like a full cup of milk would be the best for this recipe
What no lemon? I love your show Jenny. you have such a great personality
A cast iron skillet? Jaysus! Not in my arsenal of crappy bakeware or crusty frying pans! Dammit!
Thank you for a great video! I wanted to make this ever since I watched a bobs burgers episode where Linda orders one! Lol
So by not giving full recipe in video we will go to your blog?..NOT!
Looks like a giant yorkshire pudding. Has nothing I mean absolutely nothing to do with a german pancake.
Maybe it’s a very bad try for an austrian Kaiserschmarrn, but…no.
It’s a huge, sweet Yorkshire pudding.
German ‘Pfannkuchen’ are thin, made on stove, not in oven, can be filled or served with jam. And on the next day, you cut in in slim pieces and put it in soup (‘Flädle’).
I made it once. Tasted more like a crepe. I am still on team waffle…. Belgian waffle.
Yummy! I will be making these. Oh, by the way, you fried them, not bake. lol!
Wow so yummy and i hope you read about islam (just read will from more than one source and you will know all the truth) ❤️
My boyfriend and I just love your videos:D your comments are hilarious, and that dutch baby looks absolutely delicious.
Made this recipe today and the results were great the only thing that I changed was that I added more white sugar and they were yummy I never had dutch baby pancakes I was a little iffy about making it but this is going to be my new kind of pancake, thank you for sharing this recipe.
All you need is a lemon wedge or two to squeeze over the pancake and some powdered sugar.
It’s a Dutch baby, not a German pancake.
Definitely going to recreate them. I love your channel and your recipes. So inspiring Especially bc it prevents me from eating the same stuff over and over.
I really wanna make these tomorrow morning but I don’t have apple sauce at home atm.. can I replace that with something else? <3
Yum. My mom used to make these when she was in a good mood which means every few years or so. I vaguely remember she served them with fresh lemon, real maple syrup and berries.
why you cannot use olive oil? I havent heard yet any scientific research probing coconut oil being better than others..
I use your post and make these all the time. Hope you never take it down lol or better yet I need to write down the recipe. They turn out beautifully and taste so amazing!!!!
Just tried this today, it was fantastic!! Thank you Almost as good as Pancake House.
You are such an Inspiration! Thank you so much, please Never stop
