Calorie Count Accuracy Consumer Sources. The first step in determining if your calorie count number is accurate is considering the source. A Nutrition Labels.
According to the policies of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), some variation in the stated Preparation Method. Another.Nutrition labels are mostly accurate, even when they’re off a bit. Concentrate on eating well and not taking in too many calories, and don’t stress out about whether your count is off by a few dozen here or there.
A 40-calorie difference here or there. In all, only one calorie count was accurate a Skinnylicious chicken salad sandwich from the Cheesecake Factory. Eleven meals had more calories than on the menu and 10 had fewer calories. The Calorie—note the capital C—you see on a food label is actually a kilocalorie (kcal), or 1,000 calories, which is the amount of energy needed to raise 1 kilogram of water 1 degree Celsius.
No, you don’t need to start counting your calories and multiplying by 1,000.Inside the calorimeter, the food was burned and the heat absorbed by the water in the calorimeter. Using a thermometer, scientists measure how much the temperature rises, which is proportional to the food’s calorie content. A calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of one gram of water by 1 degree Centigrade, although the calorie count you see on food.
If a product has fewer than 5 calories per serving, the label can claim it has 0 calories. The discrepancy may seem minor, but the numbers can add up. Things.Susan Roberts, director of the Energy Metabolism Laboratory of the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center at Tufts University, reports that while most listed calorie counts are accurate, those for the lowest calorie options are on average 100 calories below than what the foods really contain.

This was so in accurate lol I don’t think coach Greg has ever even used a smart watch to track calories. I helped my buddy lose over 100lbs, my fiance 40lbs, myself from 17% BF -11% BF and many others USING FITBITS. when I intend to lose or help someone lose X amount of fat per week, I input their stats, set their calorie intake to have the caloric deficit I want for them to lose that weight per week and then as long as they eat that deficit they lose that weight. it makes what coach Greg’s does easier. I don’t think he realized that they don’t only track heart rate lmao they use all of your stats the same way he would.♂️
I just can’t get over that Smile! I LOVE IT! Thank you for another GREAT Video!
the food mass has a lot to do with it too. The people making your food don’t have time to measure the exact amount. If you want accuracy scale your own food
Y’all are all suckers! My ED and I are too scared to eat any food that we don’t make ourselves. I would never, ever eat fast food cause it would trigger my bulimia on top of my anorexia.
Lmao this was seven years ago why did YouTube recommend this to me in 2020?
Ditch looking at calories! Eat by counting macros and good sources ie unprocessed and low gi carbs. If you do this the calories will look after themselves.
40 is a VERY low HR. Like triathlete level. It’s pretty normal even for a fairly fit person to have a HR of 60-80
I think i found a mistake in the formula. It says for men 12.7 x height in inches. Im 71.7 inches. If i do 71.7 x 12.9 it gives me 924.93 which makes bmr over 2500! Im 180cm 95kg, 44yo
when using the calculator what would you list 15k steps a day for an activity level? i do it 7 days but it doesn’t seem to warrant the top activity choice,. im currently obese and trying to get down to a more manageable weight before starting on a higher impact workout.
Sir what if we are a student and we exercise 6 days a week? Like taking 15k steps daily but we are student i mean go to school, come back exercise and done. So should we take activity factor as 1.2 or 1.9?
I can’t never understand why people get less active when cutting. I weight training and do cardio, also walk at least 25000 steps per day no matter what. I tend to walk even more when I’m cutting to distract myself from thinking of food.
I like food with high calories because exercise is my hobby beside gaming.
Greg: “If i’m fat and a POS know what my resting heart rate is…almost 80.”
Me: Looking at my fit tracker heart rate, “Dang, that’s messed up”
that smile right before the intro cracks me up everytime lmao
So when doing the questionaire, technically I work a sedentary job even when I come home I’m on the laptop but I do weight training for an hour 3-4 times a week with 20 minutes cardio but other than that I am very sedentary. I am a 5’6 female, 147 lbs and I currently eating 1200 calories on rest days and 1300 on non rest days. Is this too low of calories for me?
My problem is I’ve been binge eating for awhile, my weight is holding steady but I have no clue where I should start without getting in my own way of figuring out what the heck I’m really eating.
It’s good enough, it’s obviously not perfect, but it does the job. Millions of people around the world are counting calories for their diets and it works just fine even with our currently “faulty” nutrition labels.
This type of “calorie counting does not work” hype is just another try of the “health” and fitness industry to discredit the easiest and most effective way of gaining/losing weight, so you and everyone else can waste their precious time and money to buy useless supplements, diet routines etc.
Was wondering about calories!!! For example if I need 2000 calories to lose weight and workout and lose 500 calories that’s same day, do I need to eat 2500 calories or do I keep 2000???? Thank u for any help… hope this question makes sense
i dont like the host, she might be an amazing person, but she just sounds dull and boring as a host..
wow! didn’t expect to see my question pop up thank you for answering!!
Paul, great channel, don’t have Instagram.
What if your at a higher bodyfat level, have been on lower calories on average consistently for a few years 2-2500 cals. Weight has slowly increased over the years. Currently 115kg. Weight trained 16 years.
Would you try and eat more for a period of time to increase daily caloric intake to eventually cut back down when you reach higher cals.
For instance, what if your eating 3000cals even by though your metabolism is probably use to 2-2500 but your burning 500-1000cals over everyday.
Eg/ Eating 3000 cals, burning 3500-4500 cals.
Thank goodness for your new intro…always skipped before…..
I suppose it comes out in the wash, though, because estimating the calories you burn is just as much of a crapshoot. As long as your counting system is internally consistent, you can cope with the uncertainties in your constants.
“I guess that guy Jared knows what he is talking about”……
OK
Sure
For God’s sake, quit saying taTCHycardia! There is no “ch” sound in tachycardia. Did your teachers say tachycardia? How’d you get 3.93 GPA and a masters for that matter and can’t say tachycardia correctly?
Complete nutritional tables take into account the type of cooking. Food nutritional labels tend to come in food that’s already prepared.

Mine is 2400….that seems way to high for me.
I am 5 foot 9, weigh 206 lbs, and weight train only twice a week. No cardio.
I chose sedentary as i want to be comservative.
Would you consider resistance training 5 days a week and hitting 10-12 steps a day lightly active or active?
Dagit! the calorie count was wrong in my lunch and accidentally ate 3 extra calories, and gained 300 lbs
I like my fitbit. I don’t expect it to give me 100% accurate data, i expect it to give me a general idea of my miles walked and general activity. Only an idiot would trust one data point or one source of data.
calories? the only thing im concerned about is the amount of sodium within something, seeing as how calories dont really affect me at all.
Nsuns has a great tool online where you can calculate your tdee via inputting your calories and weight each day. After a couple of weeks it’s very accurate and you can adjust accordingly. I’m on mobile rn but you can find it by looking up tdde spreadsheet by nsuns.
I tell people a good starting point is, maintenence = body weight multiplied by 14, to cut, bodyweight multiplied by 10. This is a decent starting point for the average person. After a week or 2, modify as needed.
what if I am gaining muscles but is concerned of weight will that have an effect? like a week ago I am 80kg now I’m 84kg but I have a more defined structure I would say lesser fat as I can see forms in my abs, however I also have a goal of losing weight seems counter productive I don’t know, can you enlighten me? thanks in advance
5:19 if fitbits are wrong and only work on heart rates how can 2 people walk 1km at the same pace yet get diff results? fitbits are not 100% correct but they are a apx. but similar to food data i bet theyre not 100% correct either. i walk with a friend daily, i am fitter than he is yet weigh more as im taller. During our walk my heart rate is lower than his, we walk the same distance, yet my fitbit says i burn more, but this is wrong to your theory yet also right in your same theory, how can it both? fitbits DONOT work solely off heart rates it goes by weight age heart rate distances and time. Sometimes it uses all these things sometimes maybe only 4 of them, ie a workout vs a run, no one ever said fitbits were 100% but theyre a ball park, just like food data.
idk if its just my ED but i never trust them anyway. i mean, if someone is making you a sandwich with peanut light mayo, and light mayo is 15cal a teaspoon, do you really expect them to measure it in teaspoons? come on. if i ever have to eat out i always take the calories they give and add 200 calories just in case.
I’m starting to prep for a show and had no idea where my calories were at. Online calculators said my mantinece should be around 1650… I tracked my food intake for a week and I averaged 2200 cal a day. So glad I tracked for a week instead of starting prep 500 calories lower then where I am!
Subscribed! I’ve a question: while tracking calories in a day, should you account for the amount you expend on exercise or does the BMR multiplier already counts that in general?
Please make a video about how to dieting without counting any calories and macros
Calories are a unit of energy
Energy can be calculated by Force x distance (hence Greg gave the 1 mile jump analogy). Force = Mass x Acceleration. If acceleration is kept constant, greater mass will mean a greater force, so for the same distance two people exercise, the person who’s heavier will use up more energy aka burn more calories.
I found that after consistently tracking my calories/macros I was able to fine tune what works best for my lifestyle and goals. I think most people just need a basic understanding of what’s effective (and not harmful) then from there they’ll be able to piece together a solid program.
Hey Paul, can you do a video on the reverse vs recovery diet in terms of metabolism recovery with minimum fat gain for someone (like me) who is very cautious on gaining fat.
I’m a short girl, most calculators had me near 1200 or below if I want to lose some pounds, even when I put in my exercise input it would still be like 1300 a day to lose a pound.
A Big Mac should be higher than the stated amount. You need to rest that as well, speaking of accuracy. And at 5:20 that’s not what begging the question means.
Calories are not the best to keep track on. I’ve learn that they are a waste to time to worry about. I usually look for complex carbs, proteins, monounsaturated and unsaturated fats. Avoid trans fats and saturated fats and stay around 1500 g. of sugar.
My online calculator said 1725 so I went and paid to get a RMR done and it showed 1555. Calories a day
I love my Fitbit. I just don’t treat it as law. It provides me phenomenal information and data that helps me stay on track, keeps me accountable, and provides motivation.
You should know that 300kcal of a cheeseburger is not the same as 300kcal of broccoli.
The whole thing about calories is a lie and the big food lobbies are trying to fool you that it’s all about that.
I can tell you that it is not.
They try to tell you that you should count your calories and everything is good. But that’s not true.
So most of them were within 10% except for that sandwhich which took most of the days discrepancy IMHO within 10% is pretty impressive.
What if you already track? I’ve lost weight tracking macros but am not sure how to find my new maintenance
I just checked that link just now and yes it’s on point. I’m 5 pounds overweight for my height and current weight. This calculator is pretty accurate for me because I was able to cut weight with 1600 calories a day. I’m in the process of traveling so I been maintaining my weight until I get back from vacation and start cutting weight again. Thanks for sharing this with us, we greatly appreciate it.
I was one of those Suckers that would keep track with daily Cal. with a Fitbit. One day I would burn 3500 so I would eat 2500 and so on. I ended up gaining weight and gave up on counting calories, then I discovered Greg’s Channel. Getting an Education here and weight is finally falling off. I still use my Fitbit but only to keep track with what I eat and to log my weight.
I thought when she said “switching gears” that she was going to talk about Honda or something.
The bomb calorimeter method is actually inaccurate because it tests calories by burning food, but we don’t digest everything.
How do you know when you have hit a plateau and not that you just need to lower cals…follow up from yday, thanks Paul
rumor is if you comment fast enough, Paul will train you for free…
The only exercises that give a semi-believable reading are running, walking, and hiking (as it takes into account the distance and elevation (?). A higher heart rate does not necessarily mean that you burn more calories.
Its because your watch knows the average amount of calories you burn per hour. So if I put my active 2 on charge it will still say I burned calories because it knows that’s my average per hour
I think the watch uses HR to calculate calories, and when the sensor readings aren’t available it approximates that with your input profile. iwatch gives a similar disclaimer.
this comment section is disgusting and I hope you quirky idiots realize how much harm you’re doing by normalizing your horrible behaviors and how much you’re impacting others as well as yourself
Ok so what I, like in my case I had a RMR done via O2 consumption. My RMR was determined at 1238 cals (resting energy expenditure). How would I calculate my maintenance based on that? The calculations that they gave me taking into consideration my lifestyle was 1761 cals per day. I am 5’7 and weigh 155. 8.9 body fat percent via dexa scan. Thanks.
1. Fit trackers motivates you to do cardio.
2. You can track everything you do, where youve been, distance etc.
3. You can track your sleep.
4. You can see your heart rate when resting, exercising etc. and track improvements.
5. You can compare with friends and motivate eachother.
Even though its not accurate, it has several benefits compared to not having a tracker at all!
A calorie is NOT the amount of energy it takes to raise a kilogram of water 1degC
So what about Relative heart rate? Would that be a better metric?
I recommend against eating so much packaged & restaurant food.
I bet many people wanted fried cheese..err french fries after and went to get some
i love your videos so much!!:) thanks so much for sharing so many useful information, i think i learned the most from you about fitness here on youtube!!! greetings from Hungary have a good day!!:)
Counting calories doesn’t work anyways, you might think that a calorie is the same no matter where you get it from, but that’s simply not true. Calories are retrieved by the chemicals in the food, if these chemicals don’t contain the nutrients and vitamins needed for your body, then they just get stored as fat until the body has no choice but to use it. A calorie from a carrot is not the same as a calorie from a hot dog.
You should really define the calorie better. 1 calorie is the amount of energy needed to raise the temperature of 1 gram of pure deionised water in standard conditions by 1 kelvin aka 1 degree celsius. 1 Calorie (a recent variation due to people being silly and ignorant) on the other hand is equivalent to 1 kilo calorie aka 1 kcal: This is the definition you used for calorie which unless stated is fundamentally wrong as the original word takes precedence over any other derived word with the same spelling and pronunciation unless you clarify which one you mean.
Also I don’t understand why people feel the definition of the calorie needs changing to relate to human digestion, calories are a measure of energy not a measure of usable energy via human consumption. I also don’t understand those whom feel the need to change joules to calories or calories to joules dependant on your country because you want to convert everything to either imperial or metric s both calories and joules are metric, it’s just that joules are SI units and calories aren’t.
Sorry for the rant.
What worked for me was a combo of Fitbit/Biometric scale/cronometer app. I track calories burned with fitbit, calories consumed with cronometer app and cross check those with a biometrics scale (fitindex app) by weighing myself everyday upon waking and drinking 1 liter of water. Its not perfect and you do need to extrapolate at times, but now that ive fine tuned it its close enough that it allows me to hit my weight lose goal consistently every week.

Notice that a calorie and a kilocalorie are different things. I’m not sure what she was talking about half of the time because of that.
Fact that you have to put energy to chew some food doesn’t mean that you absorb less nutriens
@ 4:25 do all restaurant employees, fast food and sit down, touch our food with their bare hands? Who knows if they actually washed their hands after they used the bathroom..
Face it folks, we’ve evolved to eat cooked food. Eat healthy, not some fad diet!
Cooking and freezing are both able to make additional nutrients and calories available to our digestive systems.
“people on an all raw diet may not be getting enough calories” i think this is true for people who are doing it for weight loss rather than health, because they will continue eating small portions. if you are eating a salad when you usually have a steak, youre going to need a much bigger portion to get even close to the amount of energy. if you look at someone like freelee the banana girl, im sure she gets more than enough ;D
I like it. I track my calories to get enough to make me gain weight so its useful.
you seriously have no idea when it comes to eating healthy. LOL
Oils are good for you and you need them part of your daily consumption. You are a fucking bigot!
Paul thank you so much for this topic!!I Do you trust the measurements for BMR with the use of scales usually used by nutrition “experts”? Thank you in advance!! Greetings from Greece:D
I agree that the calories burnt by heart rate doesn’t really make sense. But usually those trackers come with other functions; how many steps you walked throughout the day (and the number at the end of the day for me is somewhat accurate). Combined with how many total kilometers you moved with the option to tell the tracker if you walked, ran, cycled, swam etc. it gives you a good indication. And the heart rate is to check how fit you are meaning if you overdid it or if you could go harder and pick up the speed. The latter is rather important for me personally; I’m somewhat of an always-all-out-person and terrible at pacing myself. Cycling helped with that; it’s mountain-y here so you do “MIT” by default with all the uphill and downhill and headwind and tailwind and all. But with a fitness tracker thingy the running works better now too and I’m getting closer to that sweet spot where I can go for an hour or so at an adequate pace.
I usually use the calorie and nutritional info as a “good enough” estimate.
My maintenance is 2600 and i’m eating around 1800-1900 but still not getting shredded:(
I know I’m risking getting called stupid but here goes. I am not saying fitness trackers are even 80% accurate but what I humbly believe you are missing is the fact that you are supposed to wear them for the majority of your day and the fact that you are supposed to record your weight regularly. So the watch takes into account your resting heart rate and how much it spikes upon activity. So the tracker can tell you with about 80% certainty how much you slept during the week and cuts on to tell you that it senses and exercise that it would like to record. So even when you don’t track exercise the watch literally tells you how many hours you have exercised without you tracking it. Since I have been using fitbit along with measuring my weight and eating better I have lost a total of 60 lbs since October 2019. I am not saying the calories are absolutely accurate but it’s good enough that when I decreased my calorie intake under what it says I have been consistently loosing weight. So yeah if you put the watch in right before you exercise and don’t wear it any other time then the heart rate measurement would be a pointless indicator of how strenuous your activity is. But even you said that your heart rate changes to fit your activity fairly consistently when biking 130 when sprinting 180. So the watch is assuming the same thing based in your resting heart rate and normal activity which it takes into account.
I am curious, is counting kilojoules the same as counting calories? (I am wondering if the difference goes beyond them both being a different unit of measure)
So, basically, I have to eat even more veggies and chips are even worse for maintaining weight than I already thought.
I have a question…How did nothing know how to create two living beings, male and female, that can reproduce/continue life?
Last minute of the video:
Good bye
She: thanks for everyth… Shuts the door
i understand the argument doctor. But I think it is the stupidity of the smartwatch user, not the fault of device itself. I use a garmin device. i am generally fit (about 18% body at, i can run 10k). I agree wih most of the points you made: running burns more, sprinting w running burns even more given the same duration, and weightlifing doesnt burn as much. However, my smartwatch says exactly the same: for a 30min workout, running burns about 400 cal, while weightlifting only burns 200 to 300. The device uses other metric besides heart rate, like exercise type, height and body weigh, age,… When I un and sprint, my watch tells me my heart rate is between 145 and 160, and when i lift weight my heart rate is reported to be between 110 and 130. I think the watch is pretty on point. The only time i reaches my max of 189 is when i sprint like dying and crying for 30s at the end of a 30 min running session. and you are right thats a lot danger on the knee.
but i think the watch is generally correct. only the stupid users enter incorrect data or misinteprete the figures. i know some ppl using the watch by turning on workout mode the whole day so the watch ends up reporting 3000 cals out per day. Thats stupid
I eat at 1800 and have stopped losing. I weigh 188 and am sedentary but work out 3 days a week. frustrating as hell im tracking 100% accurate plus or minus some cals as nothing is 100% accurate.
i trust the labels on amount of carbs protein and fats but i use the mirror to gudge what my body actually does whit it
Hahahaha! She said that a calorie is what it takes to raise a kilogram of water by 1 degree C. Fucking done! It’s actually what it takes to raise 1 gram of water by 1 degree C.
what about the online calculators where u input your weight, distance travelled, time taken ect to track cals? Do u think they’re accurate? Or at least better than fitbits?
“heated food provided more energy and made our brains what they are now” < Yes, because evolution never happens if there's no hot food, mmhmmm. Claim made, I can has proof please? isn’t it a theory? smh
Never cared for calorie counting. But I do look at the lable because I want to see what is in the food. I don’t eat processed food, but sometimes you might have no other opition and some foods you would except to be unprocessed have preservatives snuck into them
Brief and straight to the point without too much science technical wankery.
This is why I love your content, Paul! Can’t get more simplified than this.
Cheers!
I wonder how many calories the potato has that was used to film this.
So you have a lovely, skinny woman talking about worrying about calories??? Are you crazy???
I would ASSume food labels represent the state that the food is in when you purchase it If you want to cook it (even things like cake mixes and frozen dinners)that’s on you. Jesus-fucking-Christ, people aren’t responsible for knowing what the hell they’re eating, now? If slight variation in calorie count is that much of a ‘big deal’, do the research, yourselves Diabetics have to do it every day.
“energy needed to heat up 1kg of water by 1°C” wtf!!! She is making video about calorie and she fuckes up 1 sentence definition?,,, “How accurate are they anyway?”.. how accurate is your video anyway? just take this down already
how do you know those bigmacs have the accurate caloric count on the package tho
Well according adding the discrepancy you actually consumed a total of 3869 calories. I read somewhere that 1800 calories per day is the weight loss target. That means you have over calorie by 2069cal in one day. So x7 days x 365 days = 5,286,295 more calories (on average) then the average person needs! No wonder we have a obesity crisis world wide.
Calories are bullshit!!!!!!!! Eat whatever you want as long as you work out as hard as you eat.
If most of the other foods you tested had inaccurate calorie counts, how can you assume the candy bar, donut, and McDonald’s food to which you compare your results are valid?
Yeah but the vegan sandwich shouldn’t be compare to a mcdonals bc of the nutrients and fiber, it’s just not the same. Good video btw i didn’t thought that the labels could be wrong
Are those DNA earrings?? I have pair (I work in genetics, yes I’m a nerd like that) and love them =)
You do know the FDA checks the labels, and misprinting/trying to fool customers with a lie on the label can get you fined.
You can’t trust it because with all of the crap going on around, it’s likely they’re lying to make you get the product.
What I do is: calculate my sedentary BMR. I have an office job. But I add my exercise calories daily. Since I do exercise 5-6x a week.
As others have already pointed out, Julia misspoke: she said calorie rather than saying kilo-calorie which means Calorie. Part of this confusion comes from the fact that calorie is a metric measurement but not an S.I. measurement and the reason for this due to colloquial use of the word: calorie (written with a lower case ‘c’ which is the amount of energy required to raise one gram of water by one degree Celsius) was hijacked by the food industry then redefined it saying that Calorie (written with an upper-case “C”) means kilo-calorie. It is for this reason alone that the S.I. system measures energy in Joules. To make matters worse, now many people in the west have been forced to use the phrase “gram calorie” when referring to the smaller value (so Julia’s original use of the word was colloquially correct; but incorrect for the Discovery channel)
Note to self: Keep eating unprocessed foods like you’ve been.
Also, if you have an ED. Smiles look good on you! (:
Thank you for raising this up! Something to really consider!
At first I wasn’t a fan of this host but that grain of salt joke changed my mind oddly enough.
But there’s only 5 seasons of breaking bad… maybe their heart rate would be high!
eat proper foods and you wont have to count them. Avoid eating things that contain “ingredients”
I programmed a random alarm and put it on max volume on my pc.
Now I burn 500 calories every hour or so by scaring my ass off and hitting 200bpm.
I rest though, thanks for the advice.
Paul love your content. Can you do a video on how to lose the stubborn belly fat? I lost 53 pounds in the last 6.5 months. My abs are pretty visble and I would love to learn how to get it to the next level. Thanks and keep up the good work!
I have a below average heart rate and above average metabolism.
Madness.
Im so confused.
He compares the extra calories to a big mac and such.
But he didn’t test a big mac. What if the calories they declare is also inaccurate?
Old coach Greg videos are the best! So funny and SINCERE! Ahhaha
That’s what I do, count for a week and watch the scale!
Great info BTW, me and my wife are both clients
The dumbest excuse i heard was “im building muscle so I’m not losing weight” lol
I don’t know that they are liars, because from item in the same category to item it is going to vary. Especially with other people from fast food making it for you maybe heavyhanded with the food. I work fastfood I know people that are told not to put so much toppings on but don’t listen. Besides even manufacturing is allowed to be a little off I mean a 100 calories could be a slight difference. You think 100 calories is alot, but it is not. I mean is every apple going to be the same calories, no of course not, because they come in different shapes and sizes. So I would not be so condemning. Be happy some of these companies are now posting their calories.
Wow. I’m embarrassed for you Greg. If this is the kind of education you got from wherever school you went to, get your money back! You need to take this video down ASAP!
great, more confusion to deal with when buying food,
never the less, thx Julia & D-news
that muffins false calorie count was over the amount of calories i let myself eat in a day cause of the rules my ed has made
So, if we cant use fitness trackers, how are we supposed to calculate how many calories we need for maintenance, to know how many to eat to cut?
So coach a vid on how to accurately judge ur calorie burnout. Without fitbit
I love how he directly roast other youtubers, no shy back. Direct fukin insult.
“Never been there, heard it exploded” I just started watching your videos and you’re really starting to grow on me. Love your sense of humor. I like people who just give it to you straight (like Alan Roberts with every damn day).
I love that this guy isn’t afraid to call his followers fat, stupid pieces of shit. Subscribed.
Big mistake at 0:49: ONE calorie heat ONE gram of water by ONE degree celsius, not a kilogram of water
Oops
They take all these factors into consideration. Ur height, ur weight, ur heart rate, the weather outside, whether or not or doing cardio on an incline, how fast ur running etc etc etc. So I’d say they are pretty accurate
But what if McDonalds was lying about their calories too so your comparisons for scale were wrong?
Many people probably don’t know this but should search “paul revelia layne norton” and watch some great podcasts, tutorials and other stuff!
Don’t count calories
It’s insufficient information anyway and it distracts you from listening to what your body really needs
I must not even exist because I’ve been eating 1100 calories a day and havent been losing weight
Now I can’t help but imagine a conversation like this:
American 1: Hey how many calories are there in this triple mega extra grease 36 pieces pizza?
American 2: Worry not dear sir, this is only 320 calories low fat exclusive! Perfect for a quick supper!
American 1: Perfect! I’ll have 3 please and also 2 kilos of donuts for my kids’ breakfast tomorrow morning! Actually, I’ll have just one pizza, I’m on a diet.
Edit: I feel my body bloating just by watching the video
Being low calorie content doesnt mean its healthy, just means there is less ingredients… Almost all food is healthy when eaten in consideration, non-US Pizzas for example (US ones are made of toxic dough) Its the highly processed fast food that kills you with its carsinogens.
I like Julia she actually sounds interesting unlike other new “cast members”
Hey Paul! Absolutely love the info you provide. I’m not a IG user nor on FB. I have a? from a 45 y/o (me) advanced exerciser and dieter. Where do we send?s if not on these platforms?
Me in July 2020: how does this video dislikes
also me: why isn’t anyone wearing masks????
so proud of greg, his latest bpm record was 190-ish and in this video he said that 170 would be his perfect best
goes to show you can never stop getting better
HARDER THAN LAST TIME BUDDY
Videos by Greg labeled “1 year ago” Greg was pretty calm. This video says 8months ago and hes callin everyone a moron. I always wondered when the calmness went away. I guess the emails did it lol
I wanna know what the fuck was on that healthy sandwich. Unless it had 200 calories of fucking ranch all over it then there is no way in hell it was 500+. Not to mention things like subway and chipotle they don’t weight they stuff out and make it exact so yeah it’s not gonna be perfect.
They are making the same mistakes which are made by many people I have met who are unable to lose weigh by counting calories. They are using vague serving sizes like “one muffin”, “one burger” etc. You HAVE to weigh it if you want to be reasonably accurate. Ideally, you would be cooking what you eat yourself and only occasionally buying readymade food. So if you want to count calories, you weigh the ingredients. It is almost impossible to count calories if you are frequently buy readymade food and try to count calories without weighing it. eg, the fax they received for the muffin clearly state the value for 164g muffin. They cannot use it without weighing the actual muffin. I’ve weighed burgers etc a lot of times, and they are all different, and usually higher than the value referred on the pack. The nutritional value is given for a certain weight. If you want to count calories then weigh the actual product and calculate from the label. This works for big brand products. Products from a lot smaller companies have wrong nutritional data. A lot of times the numbers don’t even add up. So you have your common sense.I’ve also seen the same approach with regards to fruits, meats, eggs etc. 1 banana, 1 mango, 1 egg, 1 chicken breast. They don’t mean anything. 1 banana can be 50g or 150g, it would change the calories 3 fold. A mango can be 100g or 350g. Eggs range from 35g to 65g. And so on. So measurement is also important.
I’d imagine that the act itself of seeing a displayed number is enough for some people to make better food choices, rather than believing the accuracy of the number wholeheartedly. I will admit that for a time I counted calories and while I’m sure I was overeating my daily calorie goal, the fact that I was documenting my consumption was enough to help me lose some weight. Do I want the information to be accurate? Sure. Is it better to have inaccurate information versus no information at all? Absolutely.
i love your earrings! they are just Grandiose, bedazzling, extraordinaire, extravagant, amazing, astonishing, striking, and also surprising, brilliant, stunning, impressive, staggering, and quite sensational, breathtaking, astounding, eye-opening, wondrous, a bit mind-boggling, jaw-dropping, may I say stupefying, and not to forget impressive, fascinating, incredible, marvelous, prodigious, shocking, tremendously fantastic and simply wonderful and did I mention grate!
I do bmr + cardio. Should be your maintainance. If you don’t do cardio, it should be around your bmr give or take a 100-200 calories.
Gregs heart rate was definitely elevated during this video hahaha
“doodoodoodoodoo your video sucks and your fat and you take too many steroids and your at least 75 years old!”
@DNews When a product says “Trans Fat 0” how can we know that is a real 0 and not a number rounded down? Thank you!
So I’m a fat piece of shit? I thought it was okay to be a circle
can I still use the fitbit for ballpark calories burned? not looking for accuracy just a guide or is the watch useless?
what if your job keeps changing, what if one day you decided to play 2 hours football,
what if one week you had a hard physical work,
what if you went for a vacation, what if you decided to walk for 3 hours one day
Quick question: so my BMR is 1.332 and I just starting to go to gym for 4 times a week, but I have been eating for a few years only 1350 calories per day to lose weight (I lost 8kg). So it says that I should normally eat 2000 calories, now my question is really how much calories do I have to eat right now to lose some weight?
This Video was really awesome. Pop culture references, being angry with stupid people, and me hitting the bell button
any regular generic sandwich bread 1.5cm thick is 240 calories for two slices of the bread alone.. check the label on sliced bread and common sensically you’ll know the sandwich label cannot be right. So are sushi. 100 calories for a 6 pack, some with salmon? There’s more than 100 calories in the rice alone WITHOUT sushi seasoning. Check instant microwave rice packs.
This is the first time I have heard someone reference the laws of thermodynamics to weight loss. The body is a thermodynamic system. Nice work Coach Greg.
Im not the kind of person who watchs my calories but this is still interesting
“-They are pretty healthy?
yeah, its the best!” Good marketing:)
I wonder how many of your subs will get the perfect strangers reference.
I understand what she’s saying, but just because they labels aren’t technically accurate, they are, however, EQUALLY inaccurate. So it’s still consistently level across the board. Counting macros (counting calories) is still the most reasonable way to keep a consistent diet.
Ok I haven’t seen anyone pointing this out in the last 500 comment so here it is:
It doesn’t matters. As long as the ERROR is a CONSTANT (let’s say close to 10% in the MAJORITY of the cases) than it does not matter. You maintenance calories will be yes virtually lower but they wil still be the amount that makes your weight stay the same. Some basic math knowledge.
I was just about to buy one of those stupid watches and I saw the price, then watched this video and no no, no way I will spend my money in that shit
99% of you are fat, lazy, and pieces of shit! lol this guy kills me.
local resting….. Loose weight, you…. Eh loose. Additional calorie for reference,. Not so much cardio. Thanks Greg!!!!!!
Remember, I am not your doctor. For merchandise visit: https://teespring.com/stores/coachgreg
0:47 I know nothing about nothing,
1:05 my other video, weights vs cardio.
1:30 are fitbits accurate (calories)?
2:32 are our school systems failing us?
3:20 Fitbit (apple / other watches / HR monitors) ZERO knowledge. Why?
3:55 When I rode my bike against Lance Armstrong!
5:19 HR and calories explained.
7:40 My HR vs. Breaking Bad HR.
10:15 Responding to STUPID comments. Gramma Cardio.
11:18 Bibbi Bapkas.
11:40 Measures of fitness. Is your HR elevated throughout your workout?
15:30 Krypton&Gravity
16:13 Fitbit / Calorie intake / Calorie Output
17:45 HIIT vs. MIIT
Well the laws of thermodynamics should apply throughout the known universe, so yes even krypton should be subject to them…..
Paul, a question
I do push ups and pull ups and jump rope all days of the week and some dumbbell workouts maybe like 3 days a week.
What should be my activity level?
Title: fitness trackers
Coach Greg: THE SCHOOL SYSTEM IS FAILING YOU
I reaaaally wanted to dislike this guy when I ran across his videos.
But he kept calling me a stupid idiotic moron and I fell in love with his content.
To those of you trying to lose weight, calories aren’t whats really important. It’s more abt where your getting your calories from.
you made a error (mistake) calorie is to burn (you said “kilogram” wrong ) gram off water 0:52
notice how Casey isn’t putting his face all over the video? truly focusing on the issue! I enjoy his videos.
That is why we cooked our health food in our kitchen ☺,
We know every single macros in it.
I see that in some workshops,
They don’t care about some more sous or some surplus adding, because they don’t know about calories or don’t care about health diet…..
Thanks bro.
Okay, calories are not your ‘enemy’ people. We need sufficient calories each day to survive and thrive. What KIND of calories you choose to consume is what you should consider. There is a BIG difference between the veggie sandwich and a BigMac. xxx
another thing is “per serving” and a small little bag can have 10 servings:(
Now I’m gonna double over estimate my food ahhh this is making me more paranoid than I was before it’s driving me crazy
fitness trackers are not great for calories burned, my fit bit tells me i burned over 4,400 calories each day.
I do think they are great to measure time and distances of your runs or rides.
You can trust the fact that the calories on the packages are right but you may not start counting the calories of a meal.
A bottle of orange juice may not be high in calories but when you drink it, you poor 2-4 oranges through your liver in no time. Your liver can’t handle all that so your liver goes to plan B, store it somewhere else and that is fat.
“I unknowingly ate a McDonald Quarter Pounder with cheese (520 cal)” LOL
Hello, i’ve a question!!!
IF yes, with your calorimeter you can know how much calories is in your aliments (with the heat transfer from a combustion to water bla bla bla… q=mC*delta T).
How can you know, how much carbohydrate or lipid or protein is in this aliments? How can you difference 4 calories from 1g of carbohydrate to 4 calories from 1g of protein!!!!
That’s a mystery for me:O
Comparing the end results to foods you could have eaten should be wrong right? Saying a burger has 500 cals going off the box however it more likely has 600.. tut tut
why do people misunderstand healthy by low calories…. i mean comeon even the guy in the video he said like the sandwich say healthy and shows the cals and says that a lot of cals… yeah they are a lot of cals but that dosent mean its not healthy. healthy means a good balance of nutrients thats it that is what healthy means it dosent mean low cals…. and on the note fruit juices are healthy too but have u ever counted the cals of a glass of an apple juice or any other juice…exactly the yare high in cals but they are healthy and there are many many other examples just research stuff not ever thing u see is real……
Wait so does this show how many calories our body actually needs? Because I use to eat a whole ass chipotle burrito and a bunch of junk throughout the day all together and was never over weight or obese and I use to indulge A LOT. Now I had a lil tummy fat but I was 109 lbs
calm down, your resting heart rate is out of control:D
also, Watt is a unit of power. Joule or calorie is a unit of energy. Power = energy / time.
When he mentioned Jared the subway guy I checked the video publish date.
Well, this certainly isn’t going to make my ED brain any happier
Ok so to make a 5 Cal pudding I just need to buy normal pudding and say it’s 5 cals, that’s easy. Thanks for the recipe Casey!
Only the Subway came under cos they ALWAYS skimp on the meat!
I feel like the declared calorie count should always have a percentage more added onto it to take in account the discrepancy.
90% of the food from supermarkets in America look like shit.
This is how I do it,I use an activity tracker and assign a number to divide my steps by in my case it’s 12.5 so I burn a calorie every 12 ½ steps so I add this to my BMR for most people it’ll be 20 this way you can figure out your calories day by day hope that makes sense
can we not make some kind of cocktail that mimics our digestive system.
Then rate the food based on the amount of calories made available during this process to get a better estimate.
Mmm I thought of asking Mythbusters but I wanted to develop many questions first.. err maybe for mythbusters I don’t need that but I don’t like visiting unknown sites although discovery could maybe be trusted.. screw calories I run like 10kM+ a day, yesterday 532015Thursday 1 hour 5minutes+ in the snow.. but like CAN U TRUST “THIS IS COLOUR-free.. no colour addings, no preservatives, none of those things etc” I stoped drinking the jucies from boxes because it’s logical it’s not entirely “fresh” and despite whether no preservatives(there was like 5 things overall that could be labeled as somewhat bad or useless things..).. ARE THOSE THINGS REALLY TRUE.. no preservatives, when written there.. or are they just trolling us like The Mask.. no preservatives with a [imaginary/fake imaginary], yet some realistic preservatives
eye greg, question. When I was learning about HR in my kin class we did some tests and my resting was about 40bpm. I could only ever get it up to like 140. I was also struggling a lot more with anorexia, I was so not in good shape but I had a low HR and Bp measure. of course a lot of people credited this to my fitness, cool but I couldn’t even like get my head off the pillow in the am. I’m assuming its just the body shutting down, but is there any other explanation the two polar opposites can mirror each other like that? ps I love your videos. though my recovery I’ve worked with so many obese dietitians, one of which worked on a dairy farm:) loved recommending her cheese line to the diabetic patients who needed to loose weight. sad to see how many health professionals are so lacking in the common sense certification. only thing thats helped me through this after 4 years of hospitalizations and dieticians is getting myself a damn personal trainer.
I mean most slices of bread are around 120 calories so the bread alone would be 240.
Have you found any smartwatches that do consider heartrate when calculating calories during exercise? I have an android phone, so no Apple watch. I had a Fitbit Versa that seemed to do this but it quit working after 10 months. I’m looking for something with a few more smartwatch features this time but also something that will give me a different calorie reading based on effort. (I know it won’t be accurate but I don’t want the same reading everytime.)
Who cares if they are accurate or not if ITS THE ONLY WAY WE MEASSURE the calories….. So everybody will most likely give u same amount for a specific food anyway. All i got from this vid is that the calories on the lables are not accurate 100%, but nowadays theres no 100% in anything… everything has flaws..
I appreciate this video. I wish more people were aware of this. I’ve lost 76 pounds (and counting), &I’ve been overweight my entire life. I take my calorie counts VERY seriously. It’s so disturbing and ignorant of companies to give false information / not care enough to try.
Greg, what about trackers like the Apple Watch that you load your weight and body fat into and it tracks it via gps for walks/runs/biking. Is there any value to that?
Idk if I did it right.. I’m 5’0, lift 3-4x a week.. I work at a desk but I walk everywhere to and from the gym to the train up the stairs etc got 1900 for maintenance. I usually eat 1750-1800 feel like sometimes I’d be too full to get to 1900..
Thats the first time i got recommended something from this guy
I love the benedict formula! There is also a study that shows stepcounts and what activity you are in! Very helpfull!
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/14715035/
just like USA. get over to metric and you Kilojoule instead of calorie
Because that would cost money and we don’t have that, unless it’s for the military. Then we have 600 billion.
STOP FUCKING WRONGLY EDUCATING PEOPLE WRONGLY ABOUT A RAW DIET. YOU CAN GET ENOUGH CALORIES AND STILL HAVE YOUR PERIOD. Look up fully raw Kristina or rawvana right here on YouTube
Paul, thank you for changing that horrible music you use to have at the beginning and end of every video. I had to stop watching for a while but I’m back now! You rock!
Why da fuck is all of the food in the stores wrapped in plastic foil??
It’s not the video that’s triggering for me. It’s the comments. Fuck pro ana/mia glorification.
So to get my maintenance calories in the diet recall is to add up all the calories I’ve tracked during the week and get the average?
And that is why obesity is a major problem in the US people think they are not eating many calories when they actually do.
Paul,
You are very good! I enjoy listening to you. Question: Did you ever hear anything about the Soviet weightlifter David Rigert?
Thank you,
Igor
i HATE both you guys(nytimes) and casey niestat for obvious political affiliation. however, GOOD CONTENT IS GOOD CONTENT! i appriacte, enjoyed and liked this. great work.
Maybe an analogy for people to better understand heart rate‘s connection with calory burn: How well can you infer your car‘s fuel consumption based on rpm alone? Not very well. Yes, they are connected, but a larger or turbocharged engine can run the same speed at lower rpms. Also, as with cars, a heavy person will need more energy to achieve and to maintain the same speed as a lighter one and hence, will also need a larger or more turbocharged engine. Only that turbocharging euqals greater VO2max for people.
Jesus Christ, I don’t know what to trust anymore I had mashed potatoes from stores that was only 139 calories and now I’m questioning if it was actually like 500 calories
waaa…
Well, the actual amount of Calories in food if the amount of fat, carbohydrates and protein is correct, will always be more than on the nutrition label. This is because they use the values of 4 Calories/gram of protein and Carbs, and 9 cal/gram. These are lower than the actual amount of Calories per gram in each. Both carbs and fat are close but protein is actually around 6 Cal/gram if I remember correctly. They use the lesser values because they estimate the amount you will actually be able to use from each Calorie source.
I know this is old but you should ALWAYS over your calories you track by 10-15% because of this very thing.
I think for the most part it’s accurate. You should message the vegan sandwich company about the inaccuracy, because it might be just a poor manufacturing practice. It could also be a miss calibration of the bomb calorometer at the doctors too.
Does anyone know that the Joule (SI symbol: J), the SI unit for energy, is the most widely-used unit for food energy outside of the United States?
Hello new person. The cooking is correct, it enables you to get the calories out of there. There might be some stuff that gets spoiled by cooking but so a little raw can do but mainly cooking makes digestion work well. Cooked potatoes also taste way better than raw.
Its still a good way to estimate it… It might be 20%-30% over. But still a decent way to estimate it.
But if you will replace it with less calories but no nutrients in it is almost the same. I’d rather eat extra calories with more nutrients in it, just metabolize it with exercise
This is just superb, I have been researching “top 10 worst foods” for a while now, and I think this has helped. Have you ever come across Meyaanit Fatty Escapeify (should be on google have a look )? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my work buddy got amazing results with it.
You know you’re spoiled, when you have to worry about getting too much calories instead of the opposite.
butt low carb doesn’t say anything about being healthy does it?
Christ dude use a ruler or a tape measure when drawing tables… made me cringe a bit
There’s business opportunity here. You can try to build lab to test food and create a brand like calories certified. Ensuring the calories is trustable.
The problem is that serving sizes at restaurants are inconsistent
Holy smokes! The Austin Powers line comes to mind when I look at this DNews presenter! Good God!
GREG IS A LIAR AND HAS NO CLUE WHAT HE IS TALKING ABOUT… There is no season 6 of Breaking Bad (see 8:22)
yeah it’s inaccurate but counting calories isn’t the only way to define healthy.
Wow! Good job. I eat this kind of food because it is portioned out. I thought it would help with my calorie count. Hmmm.
I bet he burns more calories making a video than working out
WRONG THING IS THAT YOU CAN’T JUST FIND ACCURATE CALORIES BY CALORIMETER. BECAUSE FIBERS AND SOME OTHER INDIGESTIBLE STUFF COUNTED ON CALORIMETER. ALSO WHEN YOU BLEND THINGS YOU ALSO TAKE MORE TOTAL CALORIES DUE TO SAVED DIGESTION ENERGY.
I have no idea how Fitbit calculates calories burned, and for what it’s worth I don’t think it’s accurate, but can’t it do a ballpark estimate based on your resting heart rate, your heart rate while exercising, and your amount of activity? Many older heart rate monitors were only worn during exercise, whereas Fitbit recommends you wear your device all day, including while sleeping, and of course while you’re exercising. So, Fitbit theoretically can estimate how active you are and how hard you’re pushing yourself during exercise, all versus a baseline when you’re just sitting at home doing nothing.
All that said, I think the calorie counter on Fitbit devices only serve one particularly good purpose: if it tells you you burned 3000 yesterday, and today it says 2700, then you likely burned more calories yesterday than today. Was it 300 more? I have no idea (and I’m inclined to think no), but it was more. As long as there’s a tiny amount of accuracy, and some consistency in the measurements, you have some data points, which is better than no data points at all.
Very good video I have been in a calorie diet, and it has give me very good results. A calorie diet is just a calculation some nutritionist dont believe in calories, but Ive notice many positive things in a calorie diet. One is that you realize how much you are eating or how less, even though not everything is perfectly label you are going to lose weight in my experience
Can I just add that for all intents and purposes they are generally close enough. If you’re paying attention to the calories you consume (yes, even the values printed on the labels), and stay within a healthy range, you will be fine. The labels aren’t so off that if you’re aiming for a 1500 calorie diet to lose/maintain weight that you’re going to stay/get fat. And considering that most people consume a combination of raw/cooked foods, it balances itself out to an extent.
I love your passion Greg. I know this is an older video but I think its still a good video. I think you might be the funniest professional weight lifter I have ever seen. I wach a lot of videos and yours are entertaining and educational…I don’t think Fitbit’s are horrible as long as you understand them. I never imagined that people would insinuate that a higher heart rate would mean you are burning more calories than someone. That’s crazy… I have lost over 30lbs since 2019 and I think keeping track of my heart rate helped my cardio performance but again you have to educate yourself what a resting heart rate is…keep those videos coming Greg
OK you are right about all this, but fitbits do encourage people to walk/exercise more.
I watch all your videos Greg and in general I absolutely love them. I even enjoyed this one but you’re off base. Not that anything you said was wrong but wattage is not something most of us can track on the fly. If you push more watts it stands to reason your heartrate will be up while you’re doing it. There obviously isn’t a direct correlation between heart rate and calories burned but for the average person who can afford a $200 fitness tracker it can help as a motivator. Just my two cents.
I saw the title being drawn and I was like “looks like the NY Times copied Casey Neistat’s style” then like 2 seconds later I hear Casey Neistat start narrating.
I feel like macronutrients matter more not the calories because something can be low in calories and be unhealthy and some healthy meals can be higher in calories like if they contain a lot of healthy fats which keep you satiated
He says the Vegetarian sandwich was almost double when it was actually MORE than double.. (Declared: 228, Actual: 548.4) Now I can’t trust any of the “facts” he’s given if he can’t understand simple math haha 4:08 but good on him for trying/doing.
people who think counting calories is their best health tool will never reach their health goals. Eat things that are quality if you can afford it, don’t eat things that make you feel sick or guilty, and throw away the extra guilt associated with eating a lot, because in the end the gym and sports and happiness are what make a person healthy and give you the body you want, and to build the muscle you need to burn off excess calories you need to find a fitness source you actually enjoy so you can commit. There’s no secret, and it isn’t witchcraft.
ok, if I wasn’t convinced yet that cooking at home was a good thing, I am now haha! Kinda ridic how unhealthy these things are. We don’t have any calorie labels where I live, but I don’t think it’s such an issue either.
İ totally agree
But isn’t heart also a muscle so the more blood it pumps the more calories it burns?
I know that wouldn’t be much but just sayin
calories isn’t the first thing people should be worried about, what’s primary to someones health is the insulin and hormonal response your body has to food.. all the food featured in the video was junk food comprised of mainly processed carbs and industrial seeds oils
Pro tip: try to decouple coffee from sweet taste. I used to drink coffee sweet but following “adults” (I was 17) around me I cut sugar and sweeteners pretty quickly. Now I find that sweet coffee tastes gross and wouldn’t drink it
Isn’t that measuring also the fiber content that otherwise passes through your system which your body doesn’t use its caloric content?
your average day is 2700-3000 calories???? must have a wicked metabolism or………….
My Garmin knows my height weight and age. It also gives me my heart rate recovery. It has GPS so it knows how fast I moved my weight over distance. It gives me just over 130 calories burned for my weight session. I use the calculations to work out my calorie deficit and I lost a pound a week for six months.
I honestly use my FitBit just for the steps. I don’t care how accurate it is, it gives me a number to shoot for, which keeps me moving. Aiming for 17,000 steps a day helped me maintain, even lose, a little weight during quarantine while keeping my calories about the same.
Yes, thats what my ears wanted to hear. Sharpies as nails scratching chalkboard with bad music.
So to find my maintnece i need to track my my calories for a week without doing exercise or it is fine with?
i can understand small issues like in fast food, people put too much on the sandwich or too little
The healthy, vegan sandwich wasn’t ‘nearly double’, it was over double the amount advertised.
I noticed this with loblaws food and many other restaurants that thier calories were miss labelled. an egg salad sandwhich had the same calories as a turkey sandwhich. protip thats not possible.
Goodbye, Julia Wilde. You will be loved, you will be missed.
I always get mixed up.when they ask about the activity level… I no they are talking about lifestyle.. were would u put a person with a desk job but trains 6 days a week? @Paul Revelia
Thanks for addressing this. I have been looking into calculators.
Doesn’t your fitness affect this? Like if I am trying to eat maintenance calories, which is more than what I have been eating in the past but I’m lifting weights throughout the week, shouldn’t the scale go up regardless if I have been cutting before?
