I always thought it was pronounced “Leedville”,anyway great video!
Funny how all they show is running in these videos about ultras but if you look at the times they literally walked 90 percent of the race lol
Thanks so much for posting this! I got to work the men’s hydration table for the race and that was amazing but I missed everything else. This video hit most the spots I wanted to see. Thanks again!
If someone were forced to do this it would be a ‘crime against humanity’. If you force yourself to do it then it is a ‘noble undertaking’.
They are all sick,,,,,moving like turtles for so many hours,,,,,yet taking our tax money to support them on welfare. SAD
This is amazing, the amount of spirit this must take to push yourself that hard
Awesome clip. I thght you were one of the runners. I actually searched for your name in the results LOL. Maybe next year Seth:)
haha are you kidding me? I can run 4 miles at 6.4 on the threadmil and seeing these people run up a mountain at that pace and knowing they will run 100 miles almost gave me a heart attack, HOW DA FUCK DO THEY DO IT??
the fitness level is incredible. running the new york in 3:00 is fast
My first trail running was 4km and i am 17 yrs. but now my longest trail so far is 37k with 1380ft elevation
I’m hoping I make this my first completed hundo. I attempted LovIT 100 back in February of this year and had a hip flexor go sideways on me at mile 26 which led to severe ankle tendonitis at mile 58 (I pushed on walking to mile 64 to finish with a 100K result). Four years ago I was barely doing 1 road 5K a month and here I am attempting a bucket list ultra.
He didnt even look tired when he crossed the finish line…. Drugs!
It’s dark and bumpy you never know what you’ll encounter….. MOMMY! ;P
QOD: Love the music you play at the end of races! The only one I got right was Rupp. Really exciting race!!
Awesome video! I’ll probably never run a tough 100 out west but it’s cool to watch vicariously through the eyes of these runners.
Awesome job thank you so much! Especially enjoyed Bernard Lagat at the start line. He obviously still feels the joy. Out of the six, I was correct on three.
Seth—what a beautiful piece of film work. Take care of yourself now that you’ve so valiantly taken care of your devoted viewers. QOD: I only guessed correctly about Galen R. but was really hoping for Des L. and she was so close. A shout-out to Dylan Marx who works at Milestone Running in San Diego (great independent running store)— he came in #35, yesterday being his 2nd marathon ever. His first was his OTQ at CIM last Dec.8. Bravo Dylan.
Almost ran into you at a race. You ran Kona in 2011 and I ran the Kona half in 2012. You have done so many marathons!
I’m 6’3 235lbs and I run 10 miles a day. I say this because for me its insanely hard. I can’t fathom the pain tolerance, training, and mental strength these guys go through
Superhuman effort. Nothing but a massive respect for these warriors.
Respect from India
I would be physically in pain driving this distance, legs would be cramping with lower back stiffness
Frankly, that video was not worth the trip. And I say that as someone who watches and appreciates your videos in general.
I used to be addicted to running, running at least 50 miles a week. Never even competed, just did it because i loved running. All i thought about at work was going for a run after it. Everyone thought i was crazy, even i thought i was crazy, all this running for nothing more than personal gratification, it was masochism. But that’s got nothing on an Ultra marathoner, those guys/gals are just on another level of masochism.
I admire 100milers, I enjoy running also but I couldn’t put my body trough that torture
You’re out of breath. Your legs feel like they’re on fire. Your shin is especially tight, so tight you feel like they’re going to tear. Your mouth dry and shirt wet. You feel emotional, you feel like crying, you feel tired. Everyone and everything tells you to stop running. But there is all but one voice who tells you to keep going. To keep pushing. It gets only that slightly easier. But it gets a lot more satisfying. To know you could run that far, you can do anything you want in life. Mind over body.
Inspirational. I am not an ultra runner though I do a few short (sic) ones, max so far 66miles on a lap course I wonder if I have/will ever have the…. grit, stubbornness, single mindedness, x factor, madness… to attempt something like this?
Just bought the book! Running has gotten me through some tough times. I love motivation.
They do it for competition,….but the commandos…they do it for daily basis,..take that one…

Can you upload full version of this…i have search the universe but not found the video anywhere!
I tried not to cry how beautiful this is just goals honestly she still finished her race
I really loved this short film in so many ways. Thank for making it!
Had to find the music so had to share in case anyone enjoyed it as much as i did Helios Halving The Compass (Rhian Sheehan Remix)
Her:runs 5k in 17M with a torn or BROKEN ankle
Me:runs 100 meters in an hour
Tha is for posting the top competitors in your description. It definently helped me keep track.
I heard about Dean as the most inspirational runner and I was like Huh! Watched couple of his interviews and the running bug got me:D
training at that altitude I bet a regular marathon at sea level wouldn’t even leave the runners breathing hard.
Some people dedicate their life to dislikes all You Tube Vids!
Props to the cameraman, film composition very good, cinematography, outstanding!
Beautiful, just beautiful video!! Really inspirational:) Thanks for sharing!!
Why does that woman runner have a black strap below her knee?
Thank you for the informative video. Several times you mentioned the twenty mile run. My current training plan maxes out at a three hour run. At zone 2, 3 I run seventeen or eighteen miles in three hours. Would it be better for me to extend these runs beyond three hours in order to exceed twenty miles or increase my intensity?
the unexplainable sensation to run in the dark..mesmerizing…thank you for this short film…
As a former Lifetime Fitness HQ employee, I’m sad to see they purchased this as well as many other endurance events. The CEO, Braham, began a relationship with a trainer at HQ gym, she became his assistant instantly and now all his butt buddies are working their way up his pants and around the table. Gross.
Just finished my first Leadville 100 and had to rewatch this video for the 20th time. So inspirational and still gets me choked up!
Thanks for letting us use your video for our academy award winning film!

seth I thank you from the bottom of my heart that you helped me find my love for running, and your tips really help me! I cannot believe you only have 80K with the quality of your videos and i can see how much work you truly put into them so THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I was out there shooting, too. For a client. I’m a distance running video producer but shot stills because of NBC’s broadcast rights and was worried about potential legal ramifications if I shot video of the race. Was this a concern for you or does it not matter after the Trials? Great stuff, by the way. I’m jealous!
Great job Seth, you captured the essence of the race. We were watching from a spot on Peachtree near the 1/9/17. The crowds were electric. Like you we dashed over to the finish area, 400 from the finish line. What a day!!
Thanks for the coverage!
What is the song playing as the top finishers are coming in?
All that beauty and vistas and he has a pair of head phones in…..
I was in Atlanta for supercross this past weekend and got a chance to see some this race. I walking to get some food near the Mercedes dome and then all of a sudden I hear a bunch of people screaming and yelling, then I see a bunch of fine ass girls running down the road in bikini running suits.. and then stood there for a while and kept watching lol.
Awesome Nathan. Hope I can do this with my Kendo. Very proud of your inspiring book and this video.
You’re having an even better production now Seth. You’ve improved your videos over the years. It’s been a while since I haven’t seen your videos. I’m so happy to see you covering this.
♂️
every now and then ill go to the end of my driveway to get the mail
Loved this! Leadville is my dream race. As long as my knees don’t give out 😉
You often see the true meaning of the word HEROIC in the unlikeliest of places, last runner to finish the race.
Been trying to find desert runners and road to Sparta documentaries but nice upload keeps me going
I applaud you all There is hope for humanity, when i see people like this.
True warriors! The longer the uninterrupted (No Breaks) effort is, the tougher it is.May they all run the races of their lives in Tokyo.
Thank you for making and sharing! This is so inspirational! Dean absolutely rocks as a person, and this movie was excellent!
Forgot he also ran 1,300 miles back to the start at the end. Incredible. Dean is the man.
what was up with the 2 break away runners? 1 min of glory or what?
What were the Hoka’s they were sporting? I notice that Jim Walmsley has been listing shoes as Hoka Innovations on Strava, are they a new shoe or just the updated Carbon X upper?
Interesting to see the race filmed this way because it felt more real, in the sense that at the start and finish it had a similar feel to any race any runner who has ever run a local race could get. The TV filming crews often use camera angles and are positioned in places a normal person is not going to be in; maybe it was that or the high quality of your camera.
Seth, that videography was superb. You are multi talented. Well done.
Documentarian, cinematographer, Mountain racer, road racer, product reviewer, father, husband, what else are you going to do Seth lol
Such an amazing race to watch! The beast women’s runner who was pregnant is my new hero as a mom of five who ran through each pregnancy. Her doctor and she likely discussed it and her fitness level said it all. She was my favorite one to watch quite honestly. BEAST
She knows she has no chance to compete for medals podium!! At all. Stop that bullshit!#
Good camera work. Your video showed more of how close the 3rd-5th place finishers really were to each other on the Women’s race…..
I hope those two r great friends and get brunch with each other. This was a beautiful friendship formed from tragedy ❤️
Let’s be honest…all of us probably wouldn’t have stopped. But it’s videos like this that change that.
Felt the urge to tell you Seth, thank you for putting this up. No amount can past your efforts for this vlog! Such an amazing man.
Amazing video Seth you have done the race justice!! Brilliant piece of videography as always!!
The race went pretty much as I thought it would. I felt the favorites would all miss the team. While I think Rupp when healthy is a lock even he was a question mark with consistency. Abdi is the most underrated American runner. He always shows up on big stages! Kipiego is another runner that is legit.
ABDIRAHMAN. needs a nick-name. Whar does he prefer. Anyone know? Ab-man? Rupp, Riley, and good old _?
Great footage! Was I the only one who chose Jacob Riley? My top three were Rupp, Pennel, Riley. Tyler Pennel was in it till near-ish the end, but still needs to shave off a few more minuets especially after the 20 mile mark. Couldn’t be happier with the USA team! Sure good guys (never met or know them but sure seem to be )!!
Thank you for posting your video. Always enjoy your coverage.
Crazy how the men went for it trying to break away (4 different guys) and got caught and think 3 of 4 had DNF. Men also only ran about 2-3 mins slower than a easy course, yet dealing with those hills and WIND. Women were a good 5-6 mins slower. The women all hung together (group of about 20-25 at half) and slowly faded the longer they went.
Amazing footage, really great shots, thank you Seth! Both the women’s and men’s races ended up being wild!
Haven’t watched today’s installment yet but had to say ‘That is a very tasty intro you’ve got there’. Nice one Seth.
What a race!! The conditions were insane. The crowds were insane. The finishes! No one could’ve predicted that. You got some amazing shots and footage that really summed up the day. I was so happy to be in those crowds cheering for the best runners we got!
Anyone know the name of the female runner at 6.30 with the tattooed arm?
A massive THANK YOU, Seth, for making this great video. So much effort and dedication! Every shot is so well thought out. You tell great stories, and you help bring the emotions of the day in such a spectacular way. I could feel the intensity and the nerves of all the athletes at the starting line. I have so much respect and admiration for everyone who ran yesterday. So much hard work to get them to the trial. They are all champions in my opinion!
couldn’t tell if that was a start or Mavic but I just got one and it gets some great footage for running
Audio was fine on mine yesterday watching on PC. Enjoyed the watch, thanks for the share.
I want to know that pain. I just signed up for my first ultra. It’s only a 50k but I’ve never even done a marathon. Maybe when my kids are older, I can train for a 100.
Good job putting this together, Seth! Really enjoyed watching it!
Really amazing work here Seth. What a race not what many expected for sure. I dont think anyone would have picked that group for sure but they certainly battled hard yesterday. Thanks for the coverage!
Now i wanna see Kilian Jornet run a road marathon. I wanna know how fast he can go on a flat course. Hahaha
Unreal, Seth. That video was great really put us viewers in the thick of the action! Thanks for all your hard work. I can’t imagine how difficult that must have been to fly in, film and fly out with all the obstacles you had to overcome. Bravo.
Casey Hill do you sweat too much, is dehydration a regular problem? How do you deal with it on an ultra?
An amazing athlete and a super guy. I had the chance to meet him at a North Face event in Birmingham, Alabama and he was so approachable and took time for personal conversation with the participants.
Thanks for putting this together Seth, great quality of video, audio and overall production. You da man!!
Hi all. I’m an ultra marathon runner and decided to make a youtube channel in hopes of sharing my journey. If you could take a moment to check it out that would mean a lot. https://youtu.be/LwJ9sU2UO6U
Great video Seth and so great to meet you at the mile 1/9/17 marker as the women came through. So cool!!! Glad to have met you and look forward to more great content.
In future Olympic races keep an eye on the Chinese, they are not good athletes but they do play a ‘blocking game’ the poorest Chinese runners will block out other Countries better runners… if you look close at this race, there was a Chinese girl that cause the crash, and never looked back. On distance races like these, there needs to be Refs all along the race, to be able to “BLACK FLAG” CHEATERS.. and pull them OFF THE RACE NOW, not after…
And do any of them stand an outside chance of an Olympic medal? They appear to be outside of the top runners. But hey race days can be a funny thing.
Sportsmanship and true humanity are something the world sees so little of.
You and the rest of contributors did an excellent job capturing all this footage. At first I though you got ALL that footage! But now that it makes sense. Thanks for sharing this experience. Well done!
Great work on the edit Seth. You make surprisingly quick work out of these… Stoked on Walmsley
Love the slomo shots. And what great footage of Jim! Somewhere somebody is working hard to make enough bread for all the butter in the vid!
Seth Great job!!!
QD: I will say the women’s result is unexpected lol but that’s the beauty of sports!!! I read Molly’s story. Such amazing girl. I’m so excited to see her in Tokyo!!!!
Saw you out there while you were moving locations Seth, twice. You are a hard working guy. Glad you got a location to film at 400 to 200m to go. Everyone, he had a good spot but was moved along with many others by security. He had to scramble for an alternate spot with minutes to spare as the crowds pressed in, but he figured out plan B under pressure.
Incredible Seth. You presented such an incredible perspective of the race! Well done.
Running uphill is the craziest thing I can imagine in my life right now… it’s like noooo wwaaaaay I can be that strong
This is beautiful and inspiring. I think we can all learn to push a little more in life, cheers
my dad and her dad work together and are good friends so i know her well and her coach told her if someone else fell to just keep going, but her dad said that he knew she would help the other people
Gracias Kendricks
a torn acl…. that’s inhuman…… must have been an insane amount of adrenaline going through her body
an old school mate of mine qualified for team canada in the marathon!
am i the only one who thought the title said the most beautiful women moments?
Shoutout that girl is from my school so proud of her to this day
Anyone knows what/who’s music was it in the background? That created half the charm of the video.
Sally Kipyego she already represent to Kenya her native country en 10000 mts 2012 Olympics
I don’t know but in soccer Messi can be play for Spain or any other country I don’t know but for me it’s not right for the native athletes sorry sorry again
Abbey is my cousin and an amazing human being, thank you for this. I still come back and watch it from time to time
The BIGGER STORY…. look at the Japanese woman runner just barely glance over her shoulder… That says EVERYTHING about Asians in general
um so great willpower and all that, but shouldn’t you just tend to your damaged ankle instead of further aggravating it because you want to “accomplish” something by finishing the race? What’s more meaningful? Treating your body well or meeting a goal that doesn’t help you at all.
Kind of low key D’Agostino looks like @sommerray in this race
I saw this sign that says “You’re not finished when you lose. You’re finished when you quit.”
Sometimes…it’s about…knowing…there are three dots…in an…ellipsis.
so nobody is gonna talk about the knee jerk mod fall from Hamblin?
her ankle got hurt and she still went faster than my pb in 5000m
I feel privileged to have gotten to meet Dean at Rancho la Puerta last year, where he was a guest presenter introducing his book “Road to Sparta”, and I was also presenter (performing chamber music). I started running late in life—-almost 10 years ago at age 59–and Dean inspired me to try a marathon. When he signed my book he wrote “See you in Boston”. I signed up with a wonderful coach who was also there that week (Tom Flahavan) and to make a long story short I qualified for Boston on my marathon last August. Dean is a humble, gentle person with a delightful sense of humor, and the new book is both fascinating and eloquently written. I’m still wondering if he’ll really show up whenever Boston is eventually run! (Having doubts about this September…..). Martha Aarons
Thanks for the vid. I never noticed Rupp pronating so much…wonder if that i a result of the surgery or if I just hadn’t noticed… Go get the Gold Rupp
Better coverage in 14 minutes than the entire 3 hour NBC broadcast. Thanks for sharing and doing the work!
This is my ultimate goal. My dream. I am 35 and about 50-60 lbs. overweight. Back in my 20’s, I completed several marathons and even won best in my age group once. It’s hard to recognize the girl I once was, but I’ll find her again. I’m a week back into running and renewing my love for it. A 100 is my goal for when I turn 40. These athletes are truly inspiring. Great video.
You can say what you want about future injury. I’m a coach who encourages kids to stop or not run if they are injured. However, sometimes the will to finish overcomes all other feelings. Over years of watching D’ Agostino run and be interviewed, she impresses me very much. Her determination and motivation are awesome, and her personality is so positive. She is truly nice to everyone and she is a role model for track and field.
You might be in pain, you might be out of breath, your body might give up on you… the last thing that gives up is your mind. For some people that is as strong as steel.
True saying: It’s not always about winning . Happy to see fair play and Kindness in their heart ⛳️
No bravery in this, just stupidity. Real bravery and Olympic spirit would be to show you are too injured to compete and bow out, rather than finishing an hour later just to show how “brave” you are
Beautiful story! A similar situation just happened in the 2019 World Track and Field Championships with Braima Dabo and Jonathan Busby. In addition, Gabriela Andersen-Schiess had her moment at the 1984 Summer Olympics. And of course, Derek Redmond and his father had their moment at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
According to the Olympic charter it states
“Olympism is a philosophy of life, exalting and combining in a balanced whole the qualities of body, will and mind. Blending sport with
culture and education, Olympism seeks to create a way of life based on the joy of effort, the educational value of good example, social responsibility and respect for universal fundamental ethical principles.”
I picked Rupp and got 1 out of 6. At least Hasay finished, Walmsley got a 2:15 very respectable.
I’m here because I have read the story in Our Daily Bread. Truly inspiring. “We need each other to get where God wants us to go”.
The moment is great. But all that interrupting text destroys the moment.:/
This was so amazing! Thanks for filming it and sharing it with everyone. What you do is truly appreciated!
All Olympic games is only one target I THINK AND I HOPE: TO UNIT ALL NATIONS IN ALL THE WORLD…JUST NEVER FIGHT………ELIMINATE BETWEEN US THE HATE.
Without any doubt, THIS was the highlight of the 2016 Olympics.
Uh, she shouldn’t have continued. By doing so, she most likely have made her injury exponentially worse.
I’m crying, I can’t believe she ran with a torn ACL and meniscus
While she did fall, she still ran 16 seconds faster than my 5K PR
17:10 vs. 17:26
Well played and God bless.
Well, it was all fortunate that both were given places in the final. Realizing they’ve lost the race and choosing to help out one another is sportsmanship.
Go New Zealand (nzl) showing our compassion for others.
Courageous filled with admiration from both athletes very proud that one was from New Zealand….. always there for when one is down and always there to lend a helping hand…..so proud to be a kiwi god defend New Zealand
We should keep on watching this type of videos over and over again when ever we feel little disappointed in life!! There’s no derth of good human being in this beautiful world of us!!
I run 66 miles ascend 770m time 11h 27minutes, it was my own race from my house in Gloucester Uk to Chesptow Wales and way back, I would like to participate in the 100 miles race some day
I still remember Kerri Strug doing that last vault on a sprained ankle to win the all around in 1996.
The people who disliked this video pressed the wrong button, since their eyes were so full of tears.
Very heartwarming. This made my day!
One of the most beautiful moments in Olympic Sports history.
what a treat! so inspiring and heartfelt-thank you! (dean’s name is misspelled in the closing credits)
It’s such a pure joy to watch this documentary as we are under the Stay in Shelter order in NY. I am so inspired by Dean that I decided to run 13.1 miles a day on the treadmill or around my backyard with hope to go outside at some point for the next 50 days. It’s certainly not as arduous as Dean’s incredibly inspiring runs but I am stoke to take on this mighty challenge myself. As a bonus, I will make $2 donation for every mile I run to some of my favorite charities.
man when the dude from Japan flew out with his (now wife) to run with his hero, that’s the type of stuff that shows how impactful something like this can be. Amazing documentary
One of my favourite running films if not the best running documentary. Dean you are the man!
Great job once again Seth, thanks for all your hard work! A labor of love though I’m sure. I just saw the post race interview with Jim Walmsley, he shared some great insights into the race and conditions out there. I highly recommend it to all. I have a feeling this will not be his last marathon.
I really enjoyed that. It’s incredible what some people can do ( not just Dean but the lady who took up marathons when she was 50 the lady with one leg and one lung ) inspiring.
And after all that he just turns around and runs all the way back to Missouri!
What an inspiring dude, the documentary was great, up until the point he put pineapple on his pizza. Confirmed psychopath.
This is an amazing film, and much more enjoyable as one movie instead of divided into segments. To see Dean in constant motion for this duration of time is inspiring. I always feel like reaching for my running shoes after watching him. Thanks Dean & film team
Which marathon did you run in Kansas?! That’s where I live!
Everytime i complete a long distance run I just felt amazing
I love everything about this. Dean, you are an inspiration!!!!!
Great video friend thank you sharing with us sub your channel
“she is pregnant and she is running, that’s amazing”
That’s child abuse.
YEA! that was a good video, I’m so psyched up. Leadville and Western States have become big dreams for me in the past 6 months. I only started trail-running this year (I’m 30 years old) but now it won’t get out of my head. this video does justice to my dreams of making it out there. thanks for sharing
Opening shot with ghosts running in the dark is so cool. Not at that level yet but will try it.
I read his book, but seeing it all makes a big difference. He’s one of the people that inspire me to keep running ultras at age now 67. I started running at age 60. Oprah Winfrey inspired me to do a marathon in 2013
Such an amazing race to watch in person. Thought I saw you and want sure but was wanting to come up and see!!!
Dean is a cool dude, good for him and those he inspired but read born to run, it will put thing in perspective.
There is a documentary of a guy doing 50 Ironmans in 50 days in 50 states. Can you imagine doing what Dean did but adding a 2.4 mile swim and 112 mile bicycle ride every day?
It’s an Outstanding movie!
And it was on just as I got back from a run.
GOOD KARMA?
Thanks again!
Great video! Just a suggestion, ditch the cheesy royalty free music and just let the shots speak for themselves
This was so enjoyable to watch! To think Dean just “decided to run 30 miles on his 30th birthday”, AND THAT’S how he startled! I REALLY hope to meet him one day! His beautiful kids and wonderful wife are so PROUD of him!I like what he said about “following your passion”. This is has encouraged me to figure out how I can make a living running. ❤♂️ It’s my release from working long hospital shifts!⚕️
First time I have come access Dean online, a very nice guy and inspiring to many… very nice documentary.
Incredible, inspiring documentary. Thank you for uploading this!
awesome footage! awesome runners! awesome crowd! picture perfect.
Thank you to everybody that joined the original video. We already had 14k views, but.there was a mix issue with the way YouTube is handling the audio. We were not able to replace the entire audio track so this is a premiere of the film with the real sound.
Glad you enjoyed your trip to our city. The crowds didn’t surprise me the Atlanta Track Club is the second-largest in the country. They paid the expenses of every runner who qualified. 1400 of us volunteered. It’s a shame you couldn’t make it to one of the aid stations we offered personalized bottle service to every runner, one bottle per lap. Which meant fluid stations of eighty tables, over two city blocks. ATC volunteers organized and put out over 4,000 bottles the largest hydration project ever. We call Atlanta “Running City USA” I hope you got a sense of why.
What time does it start? Im in UK and its currently 7.50am?
can anyone tell me in what month is this race and whats the exact location?
