have you come across any water RESISTANT running jacket with thumb loop, hood, and armpit zipper?
I know i know… but miracles do happen!!!
Great comparison! I haven’t tried any of these but I’m interested in the north face one, maybe I can find it on sale somewhere you are doing a great job with these product reviews, it’s very helpful to know all the little things like how the weight of the jacket feels and the zipper functions! Thanks so much keep up the great work!
Have you seen the Patagonia Stretch Rainshadow jacket? Pretty much a waterproof Houdini with extra pockets:D
https://www.rei.com/product/894317/patagonia-stretch-rainshadow-jacket-womens
Great video. Currently i use a base layer and fleece then rain jacket. However to go lighter weight i have been recommend to change fleece for a wind shirt. When it rains would you put your rain jacket ontop of your wind jacket?
haha, as a taller skinnier guy i’m always hoping companies will come out with small talls. I end up in Mediums on a lot of stuff just for arm length or torso length but end up with boxy fits that get a bit annoying. The OR helium 2 jacket in medium is like that but it comes in handy in iowa winters when i have 4 layers on underneath it.
Wow thanks so much for this great video!
I’m running the Harricana 65k in September and fear that a 2.5L wouldn’t be enough if the temperature looks bad. Are there a few 3L jackets that you would recommend for such an event?
Thanks so much!!!
We want an interview with the ccc champ tom evans. What an amazing guy. Just look how far he has come in the last year. #inspirational
An initial review of the Jacket.
Damn it is heavy (relatively) and it is big even folded down, it is the size and shape of pumped (or pimped) up Chorizo.
What am I used to? Montane Smock my most expensive ever clothes purchase! Was it worth the bargain (sic) price of £90? I still don’t know after 4 years. I have worn it all day only once 12 hours, showery Weather and I kept snug, still damp!
My best jackets have been bought from Lidl. Hardly shower proof, but handy I go nowhere without 1 or both of these £5.99 jackets, and I recommend them along with the Montane if you want
Lightweight
Packable to me that means sticking it in the pocket of my shorts.
What about the one just tested? I shall probably
Try it in the rain just strolling around the town I suspect it will be good. Looks well made, with a proper hood and 2 zip pockets.
On a run? I can imagine
Deep, cold and wet Winter Ultra. I would have to wear a waist pack with a big pocket tried it and fits well inside.
Will certainly keep it and will make good use of it.
I’ve been trying to remember the waterproof jacket which has a clear wrist panel so you can still see your watch (only on the left hand though). It popped up in another review today. It’s the Raidlight Hyperlight MP+ and only 100g! Very pricey though!
I definitely learned a few things from this video. I will buy a new Bonatti when I am back on my feet, so sad to have lost my last one. I use Puma windcell jackets for the streets, but got caught in the mother of all storms in Beacons once with just my Puma.. lightning, thunder, hail, running shoes heavy with rain water.. but it did well for a water resistant jacket, surprisingly. Thanks for sharing another great video.
I’d like a listing of the products you talked about here. Thanks!
For a waterproof jacket (cheap) I’m using Mac in a sac. It actually works really well for me. As the name suggests it comes in its own sac which makes it easy to pack away and store in a vest or hydration belt. And it seems to keep me pretty dry so far. It has taped seams, so it qualifies as a ‘real’ jacket for races too.
People to interview as I’ve said before some of the old characters that have been running for donkey’s years and have wonderful stories to tell:-)
They are always good entertainment and inspiring.
That’s a very good point about the ultimate aim of the taped jackets being to keep you warm, even when a bit wet from condensation inside the jacket. I’ve got a Decathlon £50 one that apparently meets UTMB standards but was a bit dismayed by how damp my top was in pouring rain and initially thought it must be leaky. I’ve only worn it a few times and don’t recall feeling cold, until I stopped running, so will have to put it to the test in colder conditions. And to see how my less well-fitted hiking waterproof with pit zips fares for running.
Can you suggest any waterproof jackets that are cheaper than £100. I went into a running store yesterday and got told by the staff there that I will have to pay £100 plus for a waterproof jacket.
However I was in sports direct yesterday and saw waterproof jackets in there reduced to around £25 from £60.
Also do I need to buy a ‘running’ waterproof jacket or will any waterproof jacket do the job?
hI on the clip you you talk about the technical information inside the jacket as 6000mm/ 6000mvp but one ones you link to on Amazon are 5000mm/500mvp…is it a differnt jacket or does anyone know the difference please?
Great discussion. I look forward to the new time you announced since I was unable to listen when you were live with this chat.
This seems like a good place to ask about temperature management in general. I am finding that even on a dry day, even with only one layer, after an hour or so, my shirt is soaking wet. So that when I start to slow down, I start to chill. I can add layers at that point. Should I try for an even thinner initial layer? (And be braver about feeling cold for the first couple o’ miles.) Or try harder to not slow down to evaporate off he excess:-) Or what? I am aware that cold + WET is a very bad way to be. I am using technical shirts, so there is wicking happening, just, it seems, not enough evaporation/drying. Thoughts? Cheers
It’s a shame Decathlon changed the design of their jacket. I’ve had the previous version for about 2.5 years and have done a few 100+ mile races in it and it is awesome. But the design was more like the Innov8, with big vents under the arms and down the back and the pocket placed high up on the chest. It is amazingly breathable and comfy and, when packed down, fits in a little back pocket in my shorts. Plus it was only a tenner!
I agree with John A. that ”there is no end to your talents”. Claire a remarkable character, she is fantastic for the sport.
How breathable is the Inov-8? Pertex Quantum is designed to be lightweight and downproof but at the expense of breathability, but I’m interested to know how much less breathable it is.
Cool, with the vented patches, that little popper and the pocket band, inov-8 have added useful new features to the Windshell over last year’s model. Can’t believe how small that Black Diamond packed down!
Mostly use the Patagonia Houdini as my windproof. Lightweight, adjustable hood and can be stuffed into it’s chest pocket (and zipped up).
Apart from Patagonia’s environmental credentials they are also committed to paying a living wage to their workers.
At 6:40 with so much of your face obscured I’d probably not recognise you!
Isn’t it the case that most waterproof jackets are breathable as they have holes big enough to let water vapour out but keep rain droplets out? Also, are there no end to your talents? Liked the juggling.
Just looking at getting a waterproof jacket and wondered how this one is doing now that you’ve had it a while and assume it’s had plenty of use in the never ending rain we had before Christmas? Enjoy your videos by the way, keep up the good work
Great overview. I heard great things about the Patagonia Houdini but I’m a big fellow and the XL runs snug. I just got the Houdini Alpine and it’s very light and worked well in today’s rain (and was on sale at REI). I also use the North Face Stow which is packable and very light but packs about twice the size of a regular Houdini. I’ve been using that in light rain and in the windy places.
How about the OR helium II? It’s what I wear, and I just got one for my wife. Highly recommended (by us at least!)
Claire, the production value of your videos has increased so much!
Salomon had on offer Fast Wing Jacket couple seasons ago with all the features as the Inov8 one (small pockets, chest closing strap) + vents in arm pits. They had discontinued that line and replaced it with S-Lab Jacket and Agile but neither of those are as good as old Fast Wing.:-(
Thanks for these reviews and showing us lots of options. Keep up the great work you are doing!
I’m currently using the Kalenji Run Wind jacket. It might not be best for really strong winds but it did keep me warm in the medium wind with light rain. Apparently, Decathlon is discontinuing the model but for 15€ it’s a great buy. The reference number of the one I’m using is 8540222 (they have this on the UK page, I have Yellow one) but I think they provide the male model only. It has way more ventilation and is not as plasticy as the female model you’ve shown in the video. So Quechua sold in Decathlon might be better in that under 20€ range.
Loved it! I’m thinking about a jacket at some point and this was really helpful. I value ventilation a lot too and your vent info was really helpful, as was seeing relative pack down size. My lightweight Marmot has stood up to over 8 years of use including a tropical storm and a blizzard. But the shoulder seams aren’t what they once were and the water resistance is pretty much gone. The time may be near. Great work and thanks!
How come you missed Kalenji kiprun warm regul?? It’s their current best running jacket
Well done Kim! Loved this one! Thanks for sharing about these. I got my husband the UD jacket Christmas 2015 and while he does enjoy it, we are seeing some cracking in some of the seams. We are big fans of Arc’teryx and I have the Norvan SL jacket and my husband just picked up the Norvan as well. The price point with them is always higher but the quality is great and their customer service rocks. Also, we usually use our REI dividend plus sales and gift cards from Christmas to get it for a better deal than their website prices 😉 Looking forward to your next video. Say hi to Ethan and Gus for me too!
Thanks for the review. I am trying to get back into running. Looking for a running rain jacket which doesn’t see you sweat inside. Do you not think pit vents make all the difference? Saw this at decathlon.
Kalenji kirprun showerproof jacket
https://www.decathlon.co.uk/kiprun-showerproof-jacket-id_8556702.html
Any thoughts?
Great review, thanks!
Would you recommend one over the other for daily runs in mild weather conditions with light to moderate rain?
Hi Claire do you know of any up and coming outdoor gear shows 2019 for the public? When you Google it they all seem to be trade shows. Cheers jc.
Review 2) Using it during a marathon.
A steady (not torrential) rain. Temperature: not January in the Arctic, autumnal 50s Fahrenheit.
I wore a short sleeved running tee under the coat.
I was pleasantly surprised! Kept out the rain and any gusts of autumnal wind.
Wearing it was not unpleasant and I am not used to jackets on a whilst .
A little warm and a little sweaty? Yup. But excellent for a 30 quid jacket.
Took it off halfway and shoved it into my capacious waist pack. This was very comfortable in the small of my back.
Buy it if you want a good value running jacket. Make sure you have a way of carrying it if the necessity arises to take it off.
I am looking forward to using it on a really wet…cold day.
Great review Kim!!:) Now I think I know what to get my wife 😉 That North Face jacket looks really nice.
I would love it if you would do a review of sport bras. I’m always looking for some decent ones for running
Great comparison, Kim (even for the guys!). I love my Salomon Fast Wings which Ethan digs. The Patagonia Alpine Houdini looks nice being waterproof. Last year’s model looks to be on sale too.:)
I’m struggling to get the right Jacket/bottoms for a trail run I’m doing at the end of this month without it costing a fortune, and that will pack down, where is the best value for money? Don’t know how to access the live chat
You’re one of the few youtubers I’ve seen where their subs match their view count! Usually if someone has like 20,000 subs they get maybe 15,000 views. it’s just a big difference! Thanks for making great and useful content!
Can you explain me how to use the elastic that you have showed t 2.18 please?
The Higher State ones from sportshoes.com are also worth a look.
I wish this channel was still active. Loved her in the ginger runner video and would love to see running vlogs with just her!
I really don’t understand as nothing would keep me dry… yes, I do use jacket in rainy day but… I guess I just sweat that much. I also would like to see a running shorts video.
Hi Claire. I am in the market for a jacket and have so many options at various price points. When I see the ratings I often see a combination of waterproof and breathability combined. The breathability isn’t really a worry for me. The waterproofing “number” I’ve seen in HH as well as MM. The one jacket I looked at said “20 000mm Waterproof Hydrostatic Head”, so I’m going to assume that MM and HH means the same thing when talking about jackets. One waterproof jacket had a rating of 5000, and a review that a guy did said that it was crap and he was soaked almost immediately. So Ms. Ginger, my question is this, and I realize you did say that you will end up getting wet and that you yourself never really look at the ratings, but how much MM/HH is “enough”? Like, this jacket ( https://www.boldgear.co.za/collections/waterproof-jackets/products/20-20-race-shell) claims 20,000 HH/MM. Then I’ve also looking at a jacket from UD that is claiming 30,000 HH/MM. When does one reach the point of overkill? I have to mention that this jacket is needed for a 100 Miler (Karkloof in South Africa) where I will be out for around 30 hours. It might rain. It might not. It might rain for a bit. Weight and storage are things I need to look at, so a 5000 jacket will roll up really small but will leak through in a flash. A 30,000 jacket will be much more waterproof but probably heavier and harder to carry as I don’t have a huge running pack. Thank you!! ❤
Hello! I understand you are XS in running jackets, but what is your bust size in inches? I am considering Ultra Vesta in XS and jacket by Ultimate Direction but its hard to understand which size to choose as people in reviews say that its quite small and have to go size or two bigger. Thank you.
Love my Patagonia Houdini. it’s perfect for much of the light rain we have here in AZ. But I also wanted to let you know how much I appreciate women’s specific gear reviews! it’s so hard to find reviews for women’s products I’m interested in. Excited for the future of your channel!
I have the Houdini and love it. I also have a Salamon Fast Wing. Very comparable to the Houdini in utility and stuff size/weight. The stuff pocket is down by the hip instead over the bosom though so I can actually stow stuff in the pocket so it inches up in my favor just a bit. I rotate both of them often though. I think they retail for around $100. I got mine on a killer sale for $35 though. Sooooooo worth it. I have a 3rd jacket by Craft. I don’t love it in moist conditions but I do pull it out if it’s windy. It has under arm vents but I find if it rains my arms get swamped and cold from them.
Very interesting. I run in Salomon Bonatti but this is a good backup option
I am currently testing the adidas Agravic Alpha Shield Hoodie (which I think will be available in Feb., 2017), it is amazing! It is a Pertex Quantum shell with a very thin/light Polartec Alpha lining in the front (developed by US Special Forces). It is remarkably light, breathable, tough and cuts the wind amazingly well. I can’t speak to it’s waterproofness, as it has not rained in Boulder since I have had it, but has done a great job in heavy snowstorms, single digit temps and hurricane force winds, as well as more mellow days in the 40’s or 50’s. If you or Ethan get a chance to test, jump on it!
Thank you for another very good video. Waterproof jackets can be pretty expensive to experiment with. I was wondering if you were to recommend one 2.5 layers jacket as your overall favorite which one would it be?
I buy my stuff from old navy or sierra trading post. I’m poor as well as not excited to rip $200 jackets if I get tangled up in a tree:). Haha. I know I’m likely missing out on some awesomeness.
Ooo, will have to have a look at this! Thanks for another great video!
You make a good point. Some of the jackets are ridiculous prices. I went into the trespass sale and got their water/wind proof jacket reduced from £55 to £23. And it’s a brilliant jacket. It’s as good as any I have worn before. I would probably buy 2 cheaper jackets rather than get one expensive one. As you know, we need it here in the uk lol
Sweet review! They are really great to watch, really informative. Am going to definitely look into the Patagonia & North Face jackets after that review!! I have 2 I currently use a Macpac one that is seam sealed packs away to an OK size (fits into 2L Camelbak pack just fine) really great for more severe weather & races where you have to have seam sealed stuffs ($70NZ) but my fave is the Puma Complete Running windproof/water repellent one that packs away half the size of the MacPac one, looks similar to the Patagonia jacket and I have to confess I paid $2NZ for it on a super clearance deal!! Always looking for bargains:P It performs really well in cold winds, breathability under the arms but also has a lack of pockets, has one large one on the chest could fit a phone in it easily & has an earphone port thingee!
Love how you include environmental philosophy of manufacturers!!!!!! Thank you for the advice!
I was wearing a HIGHER STATE jacket, for a half marathon over Dartmoor, the weekend of storm Dennis. Brilliant never let any water in and kept the wind out, keeping me warm and dry. 10 out of 10
What is the average temperature do you typically use a light jacket vs a heavier shirt?
Excellent review Claire I also run in an inov-8 windproof, and I love it
Your best review so far. You can tell you’re getting much more comfortable and at ease doing reviews. Looking forward to more!
Nice gear testing and info.
Have you looked at on cloud clothes? My wife is mad for them but they are very VERY expensive.
Very happy that you have your own channel and geared to women. Love it! I have the Patagonia jacket and it’s a must have. Can you do an episode on heavier jackets?
Hello, just found your channel and binge watching all your films.
Could you possible do a feature for us girls on sports bras. Since becoming a mum and the side effects of that, I have been unable to find a good fitting bra that also allows you to breathe. I used to be a size 10 with C cups, now I have lost my baby growth but not my boobs, I can not seams to find the right bra. Bras that stop my E cups moving, also stop my rib cage from moving when I really need to get more air in my lungs. There must be other women out there with this problem. Please help, Mel.
Great review! I still wear my old school Flyer jacket, but I’m always interested in the new offerings. Are any of these hoods removable? I hate feeling like there’s a parachute behind my head.
Have you tried the Arcteryx Norvan? It’s very pricy, but I’ve heard it’s amazing. I’d love to see how it compares to the UD jacket
I’ve never commented on a youtube video or channel, but can’t help myself with yours-I am PUMPED about this channel. I can’t wait for more women’s running content (reviews, and otherwise!)
I’m just getting into running so this was a nice comparison and starting point for me. Thanks!
Hey guys! Here is my quick comparison of 4 popular lightweight women’s running jackets! Have you tried any of the jackets I talked about today? Do you have a personal favorite that I’m missing out on? Let me know in the comments below!
This was very helpful. I bought the vest but had no idea there were so many pockets, or that the bladder holder in the back was removable, or that the cute little pocket was actually a trash bag! Next time I will shop Enwild first.
Hi! Do you have a video or “how to” tie the bladder in the bladder pouch it has? Thank you
I’m sorry, did I miss what size Becky was wearing? That would be great to know! Thanks!
After looking at Gore [£200] and inov8 [£100] this seems like an absolute bargain.
Ok I have something to say, I have signed up for over 10 of your giveaways and yet still have not won so if you guy can help and tell me how many people normally sign up,that would be nice. If you want to know why I want the number of people who sign up then ask me your self please and thank you.
