The bulk of the research shows that Plastic #7 (Lexan, Nalgene, and other polycarbonates) bottles do not leach enough bisphenol A to cause health concerns in humans. Lexan bottles have been in use as water bottles, storage bottles and baby bottles for many years. After concerns were raised by consumers, most manufacturers reformulated their plastic to eliminate BPA.Most types of plastic bottles are safe to reuse at least a few times if properly washed with hot soapy water.
However, recent revelations about some of the toxic chemicals found in Lexan (plastic #7) bottles are enough to prevent even the most committed environmentalists from reusing them—or buying them in the first place. When these bottles are appropriately recycled, they cannot be used to create new water bottles. The plastic is not safe enough to be used for food containers and is typically used to make plastic parking stops, park benches, or synthetic clothing like fleece.
It is also frequently recycled through incineration.Of course not — so treat plastic water bottles the same way. The second supposed risk of reusing plastic water bottles is that over time harmful, toxic chemicals will bleed out of the plastic into the water. Scary as this sounds, there is no good evidence that such a migration from the plastic to water is possible.Reusing plastic drink bottles is not recommended, as it increases the likelihood of impurities due to the introduction of bacteria and the potential leaching of plastic compounds into the water.
For decades, polycarbonate plastic has been safely used to make baby bottles, reusable water bottles, and sippy cups. The safety of these products has been supported by numerous science-based safety evaluations of bisphenol A that have been conducted by independent government and scientific bodies worldwide.Typically, hard plastic bottles are made of polycarbonate plastics.
You can find out if a plastic container is made of polycarbonate by looking at its recycling number. If you see the number “7” in the middle of the recycling triangle symbol, the bottle contains polycarbonate plastic and you should avoid it.Polycarbonate plastic (often included in plastic seven), leaches bisphenol A (BPA) into food, a known endocrine disruptor.
BPA may also create genetic damage and may effect development. Mixed plastics are typically used to construct lids, medical storage containers, five-gallon water bottles and sports water bottles, among other items. If you are looking for safe plastics for your plastic water bottle, then this chart may help. Safe Plastics. Note: This information on safe plastic is not the same as you will find elsewhere on the web.
In an attempt to provide the most up to date evidence based information, there are several differences than you will find in a general search.Used to produce polycarbonate plastics and epoxy resins, BPA is found in many drinking containers, the lining of most food and beverage cans (including soda cans), bottle caps, plastic cutlery. The American Chemistry Council and Care2 agree that it is safe to reuse these bottles after you have finished the original contents.
To date, no research indicates that this plastic category leaches hormone-disrupting chemicals or any substances that may cause cancer. An effective way to do our part is to buy reusable, sustainably sourced items and to reuse or recycle the disposable items we have. Single use plastic bottles are designed for exactly that, single use. It’s not safe to reuse single use plastic bottles for drinking.Plastic bottles of any kind shouldn’t be reused if they show even slight signs of wear and tear, such as cracks or dings.
These allow chemicals to more readily leach out of them. Keep in mind.If you need to reuse a bottle, it is a good idea to try to clean it before using. You can do that by rinsing it thoroughly – but do not put it in the dishwasher. Technically, PET plastic should be able to handle 70 degrees, so a plastic bottle could withstand going into the dishwasher, but we would still like to.
Better to use a reusable water bottle, and fill it with your own filtered water from home and keep these single-use bottles out of the landfill. Unfortunately, those fabulous colourful hard plastic lexan bottles made with polycarbonate plastics and identified by the #7recycling symbol, may leach BPA.

Me, I avoid waterbottles and just drink from the white ceramic bowl filled with water my owner likes to sits on.
the only person i knew who microwaved strech wrap got breast cancer!!1
this is very bad practice, the gas produce from burning plastic will destroying the OZON
We millenials^^ Btw, i buy bottled water, bc my tap water tasted like ** and i get heartburn from it
So what type of plastic do i need to use?
Sometimes buy water(bottle that transparent) on store then the bottle i keep refill.
Thanks but how about food processor, juicers theyare made of plastic.. how to check the safety levels on them
I currently have 4 doppers and I refuse to take any more of them because it defeats the whole purpose of those things..
Pagel hmare pass jo pani h vah hmesha pvc pipe se aata h or ishver se mafi mangkr bolta hu ki hmare ghar me kabhi bhi kisi ko bhi nahi hua cencer tum mental ho behan
Just an FYI that this HDPE that you were melting has a melting point of 266 degrees Fahrenheit. When it gets toward that level, it gets tacky but doesn’t completely melt, and can be formed into solid blocks without causing fumes or smoke. When plastic/HDPE is burned, it releases dangerous chemicals such as hydrochloric acid, sulfur dioxide, dioxins, furans and heavy metals, as well as particulates. These emissions are known to cause respiratory ailments and stress human immune systems, and they can also cause cancer.
Great video and great idea until it started smoking, huh?
Why do aluminum bottles give me a headache? Like really bad headaches anytime I drink out of one…?
I had no idea that one-use plastic items shouldn’t be used again after they’re out of their original content. After writing this I’m going to my kitchen to discard all those empty items.
Don’t let it burn inside it will form carbon by burning plastic
That is a great question! Baby bottles are kinda in a different category b/c of the chemical bisphenol-A, which is believed to interfere with behavioral and reproductive development in infants. Even though baby bottles contain bisphenol-A, there are safer alternatives. Just choose glass baby bottles or plastic ones with the number 2, 4, or 5 on the bottom. Instead of say “watch out” she should have said “watch for.” Thanks for watching and being so attentive to the details! 😉
What if my water bottle said BPA free when I bought it, but the number on the bottom says 7? Hmm?
This makes me feel brilliant. When your plastic is on fire, you’re losing material aside from the health issues.
Informative video Trace!!! The bloopers are funny!!!
Love you my friend!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I live in Canada and we took the BPA very seriously, about 2-3 years ago we pulled EVERY plastic baby bottle off our shelves at the store I work in. for months we had not one bottle, until we got bpa free and glass bottles in. Now everything is marked BPA free so parents know. No offence to the states, but I’m glad our government did something about it even if it seems like “nothing”
“not capitalist friendly” which is exactly why corporations do everything wrong when it comes to recycling/eco friendly…Remember Mr Burns?
So now they’re making these numbers smaller and barely readable
It’s frustrating are they doing this on purpose?
Would you say you “feel strongly” about reusable water bottles?
I see your intro and I hear in my head “Three two one contact! It’s the secret. It’s the moment when everything happens…”
So should I not buy another stainless steel vacuum sealed water bottle since it takes up so much energy? Or will I eventually displace the cost with lots of use?
0:40 “If you give something away, everywhere, for free, then it’s not valued….” Don’t elect a govt to force others to pay for healthcare. The mentality that happens bc something is thought of as no cost/free will be the similar as the plastic water bottles.
I’TS NOT BAD FOR YOU!!!!!!
EDIT UGHH: IM NOT GOING TO STOP USING MY HYDRO FLASKSKSKSKSK OR MY METAL STRAWS!!!!!
You say that 1, 2, 4, and 5 are safe, but then right at 2:00 after discussing #7 BPA baby bottles, you say but avoid 2, 4, and 5. So are 2,4,5 safe or not?
I hate all of the “cheap plastic crap” that’s everywhere in our society. Which is why I only buy expensive plastic crap.
Seriously though, I work in the QC lab at one of those bottlers you mentioned and can confirm, bottled water is reverse osmosis and/or filtered municipal water. Not that that’s a bad thing. Tap water is great. Even though I can drink all the bottled water I want (they literally give it to us) I mostly use the drinking fountain.
Water is water, but plastic is forever.
Listen because a recent study in Australia 3 days ago said that the chemicals in the plastic make our thing shrink if you know what I’m talking about:—— it’s not even funny this is BS avoid plastic! Glass or wood
I thought I was the only one who has smoke follow them….thank God
i dont even have one
i drink out of reuseable glass bottles ( w/ deposit )
which takes some ammount of energy but is still better than plastic bottles
Great info in the video! I’ve been refilling single-use plastic water bottles for years now (even though it says do not refill) and only now understand why I shouldn’t do it.
what if i’m storing dry goods in plastic#1? is this ok? also I have two small serving dishes with #7 but I never really store or heat in them. I only serve in them, then hand wash. it should be ok. for both #1 & #7. what about gallon container holding reverse osmosis water in them with a # 1 on the bottom. just water usage and storage only. is this safe?
Very well presented useful information. The bottom line is to avoid plastics altogether. What is now becoming increasingly obvious from new medical evidence is that these chemicals affect families through generations. So a child may have a plastic induced medical condition because of a plastic her grandmother ingested. No one is ever required to produce anything like comprehensive research before the products are licensed for sale, it’s up to individuals to protect themselves.
the temp may have been overkill. you sought, you found, you answered you own question. GOD BLESS. JESUS CHRIST IS LORD
You need to consider the effects of heat to every object your heating. Putting anything on a open fire without knowing any melting points is very very dangerous. Plastic is a product of oil. When heated over its melting point it will begin to fume. Plastic fumes are very bad for your health because its basically turning into crude oil when it begins to fume and when exposed to its flash point it starts to catch on fire.
1. do not use open flames or a heat source that ignites the plastic fumes.
2. use proper ventilation to vent off fumes in a safe manner….those smog fumes cause lung cancer and very hazardous to your health.
3. always wear safety protection such as a half mask for inorganic vapors and safety googles.
4. do not put plastic in your oven, ovens may have a miss calibrated heat index which may set off ignition or molten plastic may drip onto the coils that may cause a fire.
5. direct contact with an open fire using aluminum will either melt or warp considerable, using aluminum is not advised unless the heat source is controllable.
6. stainless steel has chromium inside of it which forms on the metals surface that forms like black salt which may cause castings to be weak/brittle
When conducting a experiment like this you need to have it on a controllable small scale that minimizes risk for injury and record all data to make a conclusion.
hey if you don’t want them, I’ll have them. They cost a bloody arm and a leg in Australia the aluminium and stainless ones, I mean. I use them when cycling or walking. Hell, I even have one on my backpack just for going shopping. Haven’t seen the free ones you’re talking about anywhere
Trace, what about the “paper water bottle”? I mean back then before the PVC got popular, we all were using paper and metals. They said paper requires more tree cutting so we used PVC. Now are we going back to cutting trees down? Such as having a water fountain to provide them with a disposable cups?
p.s. Oh Trace, one more thing. Asia has a very good recycling system specially in Japan. You can dig into it and perhaps you will be the hero by spreading the idea.
Is the yomious glass water bottle good or bad? I’m looking to get one
Should of made a smaller fire and put a cinder block on both sides and put a grill grate on then to set pot on directly above it.
Thank you!!!!! for somebody finally saying this! I’m so sick of these companies pushing these eco-friendly-but-not-really products.
Most of the world does not have clean water, and plumbing infrastructure that costs trillions of dollars. Put, screw fitting on the top and bottom of the bottles; when the ends are cut, they can be made into plumbing for running clean and waste water in the third world. Yes, this is a trade off of chemicals in plastic, but it will save even more lives in the long run than doing nothing.
You could melt it on the gas or electric Owen, much better without fire. Just low temperature and would be much better for the environment
If one has gone so high that he/she already is eating organic food and looking for safe plastics, should also avoid microwaves:)
I drink tap water and a tip for all who buy plastic bottles: nearly every bottle you can return in the supermarkt and get 10 cent.
It looks like someone backed the Reading Rainbow kickstarter! I have the same magnet on my fridge.:D
I melted a plastic bottle in a can on a hotplate when I was a kid. I covered it when it started giving off fumes and smoke. I opened it a couple minutes later to check the progress and the fumes exploded in a fireball and singed my eyebrows. End of experiment.
Ok, here’s what I’ve always wondered about single use plastic bottles; How is reusing them worse for you than using them the first time?
If they leach chemicals into their contents if they are reused doesn’t that mean they leach chemicals into their contents on the first use too?
THANK YOU! I’ve been hating on those giveaway bottles for years now totally annoyed that strangers are filling my kitchen cupboard with ugly bottles promoting THEIR stuff lol. My daughter has wanted one of those steel ones for a while (hoping this video will finally talk her out of it). great topic to cover Trace:) thanks!
“My eyeballs are burning.”
Dude, were you even wearing breathing protection when doing this? Doesn’t sound like it… If not, you probably have 7 different kinds of cancer right now. I’d probably go get a lung inspection.
Great DIY experimenting learn from the errors and perfect new methods
“all right I’m not sure if it’s suppose to be on fire”
Thats the line you want to hear when doing an experiment
Now I feel bad about drinking out of my smart water bottle that I bought from the gas station months ago. =/
Very interesting points though, good watch.
Are we stealing graphics from the 3 2 1 Contact TV Show? I love it!!
Sir, One small suggestion, Please use some colourful background in videos as in seeker, And spent time in editing videos by adding pictures and so on. And mainly, Create a amazing thumbnail. Don’t take me wrong. I am not a good youtuber but I am suggesting this as a friend:) Hope to you with Million soon. Continue your mystery exploration..
1,3,6,7 ki plastic se recycle ki hu ee chije bhi hanikarak hati hogi na ya nahi…?
It feels bad when i see people buy lots of water bottles every month because they don’t trust tapwater. While it is here as clean as needed to be healthy. They just do it because they are used to. Because they grew up in places where you couldn’t drink tap water. Even telling them how much less it costs them if they change (these are not rich families) they will go for the bottles.
I cannot believe that worked. I genuinely thought that was not possible without degrading. People are trying extrusion methods and injection moulding etc etc and it works by casting?? Not good for the ozone I’m sure but good for the oceans full of the stuff by being repurposed so easily. Subd.
Trey, how easily can u read on a bottle if it is recyclable? Would it be in plain sight “RECYCLABLE” or are there certain symbols? Thanks. Love your vids.
Bro ingot is such an easy word.
Through all the other stupidity I was like ok.. benefit of the doubt type of shit.
But yea, your not smart…
I have 2 blender bottles, one for tea/coffee and one for water. I’ve had the water one for 5+ years and the coffee one for 3. They are all I use, we have well water here that is really good so I don’t buy any bottled.
It shouldn’t matter what material do you take it from, as long as you reuse it. You should get one that you are going to like so you won’t want to switch after.
Switching out all of my plastic containers and cups and what not with glass and wood currently.
FRUITCAKE! put another pan over it and smother the fire….. fumes are something that will most likely destroy your lungs!!!!!!
Its not the plastic causing all the health issues. its the GMO”s and roundup week killer in are foods. 90% of are foods. same stuff that kills test mice in 1 week with same % that we take in..
Funny I find this randomly when I was looking for a reusable water bottle to buy from Amazon just an hour ago.
I don’t know about the U.S but I never get given out free reusable water bottles in events. We get key chains, pens, highlighters and sticky notes.
I’m probably stating the obvious, but if this plastic safety rating system weren’t cryptic as it were, more would know there was a risk present. The FDA eventually did it with tobacco, why not this? Surprising as it may seem, most aren’t aware of this being an issue. What about a code dedicated only to safety, maybe “A” being safest and “F” for fubar. My point, if they have best interest of the population in mind, it would seem there are 10 fold better solutions to educate US.
Its Not bad for me
cuz i live in nederlands
and water from sink is clean
also i use dopper bottle
Now government make plastic nano electron bio into human’s body and brain, so their government agents can monitoring the people EEG by using 4G wifi technology.
Hey love your vids. Quick question: What are the alternatives to plastic water bottles?
I am someone that likes to bring water everywhere, but I also worry about contamination by the plastic and the bacteria that plastic tends to harbor. Please help!
Also, tupperware D:?
What about Silicon? I’ve been using my reusable hydaway bottle for years, it crunches down small enough to go in my handbag when empty and all restaurants are happy to fill it up for me.
opinion and no evidence! please, be sure to use real data and not more guessing!
Hi Trace.
Nice content,
As usual.
Still here,
I swear I’m not stalking you
Could you make a video about whether the vegan/zero waste lifestyle are actually much better for the environment?
I reused plastic soda bottles for years. Guess i have cancer now, awesome!
I’m no fan of plastics in my environment but this video is just incompetent
Pollution! Did you ask your neighbours how they felt your stupid experience?
What about the galoon container from the drinking water station it is safe to drink?
Welcome to the plastic atic bakery, we sell baked plastic and sandwhich plastic
It’s a shame you didn’t name what are the good reuseable aluminum and glass bottle manufacturers. Anyway I’ve been using Nalgene plastic bottles for decades. I typically use one for an average of 3-4 years before they get lost (left behind) so I’m sure my usage has more than offset whatever carbon production cost. I only stick with reputable brands and I don’t use those free garbage handed out. I really wish companies would stop pretending to be green by giving away plastic bottles, reusable shopping bags, etc.
I notice none of these videos bring up gallon of water just bottles
Microwaves and dishwashers are both useless lazy appliances. Microwaves in general cause of how they work. Dishwashers don’t even clean as well as a hand washing does.
Hey there it would be good to knw what is in each number like a list becouse I bet if we did really knw wht was in most of them we wouldnt us them I would like the facts as enybody can say enything
Yeah this is equivalent to someone doing a 30 second Google search then making a video about what they leaned.
Our government should not allow toxic #3 and #6 plastics in the marketplace! Most take-out containers, all Styrofoam products, and Keurig accessories are #6. I gave my Keurig away!! Never warm up your food in a #6 take-out container I believe Wendy’s is a #5 good for Wendy’s!!
This procedure name in chemist is pyrolysis.
You can make same procedure the old wheel tyre into Diesel petrol material.
But the all gas comming out from procedure is high toxic and the level of cancer illnes is extreme high also.
Use gas storage system ( gas washer), to reduce this risks, and not work at home, next time ( the best workplace to this procedure is in a chemist laboratory).
So I should only use glas if you want my food stored in a non-toxic way? xD
“Indigot”?! Are you fucking SERIOUS?! Put down the plastic and pick up a BOOK ffs.
Oh my god! When will people realize that they are overreacting to this bullshit.
I’m drinking a bottle of water now and in the ▲ it write 1 (:
Were you able to cast it? Can you cast it to make something like a cup?
Cheers for the Video clip! Excuse me for chiming in, I would appreciate your initial thoughts. Have you researched Proutklarton Protecting Aqua Plan (google it)? It is a great exclusive guide for getting prepared for a mega drought without the normal expense. Ive heard some unbelievable things about it and my work colleague at last got amazing success with it.
i’ve been refilling my disposable waterbottles at water fountains, I guess I’ll stop doing that and find a reusable one
What about plastic containers that have no numbers on the bottom of container? Is it food safe or throw away?
I have 2 stainless steel bottles, both of which I bought around a year ago. I see myself using them for as long as possible.
I’ve never heard someone pronounce ingot like that before
fraud telling lie,Aap sab iski bato main mat aooo jo plastic water bottle aate hai un sabhi par 1 hi likha rahtahai
A lot of different bottle waters in wisconsin are bottled in my home town they just put a different label on it for who ordered it like walmart
I melted a plastic bottle in a can on a hotplate when I was a kid. I covered it when it started giving off fumes and smoke. I opened it a couple minutes later to check the progress and the fumes exploded in a fireball and singed my eyebrows. End of experiment.
Aeee pgl aurat rohafa ki bottle pe nhi 1 likha huva hai toh hanikarak huva kya javab doo
Mere pas ek botel h jis k dhakkan me 2 or boltel me 1 likha h.es use kre ya na.botel mango juice ka h
