So first off I’m just a scrub tech. But I just found out that my favorite surgeon is leaving the hospital I work at. My favorite thing about him is his gown spinning ritual. Every time he scrubs in, he slaps his turn tag into the scrub’s hand hard then does his spin, but he does dance-y ones and always tries to make it a cool one. They’re fantastic. Then the scrub must rate his spin on a scale of 1-10. (It’s also become somewhat of a “good juju” thing- we like to say that the better the spin, the better our case will go)
My second favorite is from a different surgeon, but every time someone asks him what to call the specimen, he replies with a “person name” like Betty or Fred or something. Other surgeons do this sometimes too but this one particular surgeon does it every single time without fail, and no one has ever heard him use a name more than once. It’s like he has a baby name book memorized and he picks a different one each time. We actually get excited for specimens with him because we want to hear their name.
What funny little rituals have you seen or done?
