Yoga Transitions to Prepare for the Next Pose Awareness. You know your yoga practice is supposed to promote mindfulness, but how often do you forget to breathe while Alignment. A major benefit of yoga is its focus on identifying and correcting imbalances in the body, particularly those. In most yoga flows, like what you’ll find in vinyasa or power yoga classes, you’ll transition from chaturanga, which is a yoga pushup, into downward dog, where your body resembles an upside down.
The transition poses neutralize your body, preparing it for the next position in the yoga sequence. Transition poses also act as a bridge between standing and sitting or lying positions. An effective transition pose seamlessly fuses the positions proceeding and following it the sequence without being taxing or awkward.Transitional poses are important in preparing you for the next pose.
They allow you to gently shift your weight and ease into the next pose while paying attention to alignment and positioning. Paying attention to transitional poses can help you to focus on your breathing and movement, instead of looking forward to the end of the sequence.A Start in tree pose, standing on the right leg with hands in prayer.

I choose you. You inspire me and I want to incorporate more yoga into my life. This practice kicked my ass and that’s exactly what I needed. Thank you!!
great input. i will try that…i hope i can make it happen in about 10 years:D
im having trouble moving from chaturanga to up dog cause im feeling bearly nothing chances with my hands, please post a video od this move <3
This video was perfect for today. I’m going to be starting grad school next month and will be getting my first car very soon. This was just what I needed. ❤️
Who is the girl here? She’s not listed in the video. Would love to know her full name or if she has Instagram
My coworkers laughed when I told them I was going to shed fat with Fat Blast Furnace, but then they saw the results. Google Fat Blast Furnace to see their reaction. (You should see their shock!)
YOUR MY FAVOURITE YOGA MENTOR ON YOUTUBE. YOU EXPLAIN ALL YOGA POSES IN DETAIL. YOU ARE VIDEO’S ARE JUST CALMING AND AMAZING.
You are incredible Dylan! My yoga practice is improving day by day b’coz of your classes. Sending lots of love from India!❤
Used to do chaturanga but I hurt my shoulder so found this, which fixed the bad alignment which caused my injury and built my strength as I rehabilitated my shoulder. The knee chest chin video in yoga foundations is definitely worth checking out too!
omg, you are so cool, amazing teacher! love Uwhere have U been all my adventure with Yoga?U tought me better than anyone else ever before.Thank U
Does anybody know what yoga mat is she using? It looks quite roomy
Hello Adriene just wanted to say you’re absolutely amazing your tutorials are wonderful I started doing yoga a couple of years ago technically I’m still a beginner but I did it to avoid back surgery and it has been wonderful you! are a godsend thank you so much
Knees, chest and chin pose is a little bit hard. I did it but not well done. You think it’s a easy pose but no. However, I liked practice doing it. Namaste.
Hi Adriene, I keep reading that chaturanga is bad for the shoulders so I’m not sure about doing it,would love to hear your thoughts on this, apart from that I love your videos, thank you so much
You are such a wonderful teacher! Thanks for sharing your knowledge and positive energy.
great! one question though. What about doiNG Bakasana as a preparation for this jump (ashto) and jumping from there to chaturanga? do you think it could be a fair option?
I dont know why indians dont make videos
origin of yoga is india
they got whole knowledge from us
I choose strength, courage, trust, faith in the Divine and love.
What do you mean “walk your knees towards your midline?” Where’s your midline?! They are already under the hips in tabletop. Please explain. What is “find your integrity”. I don’t understand your esoteric expressions.
hi..thanks for d tips.has helped me in my quest for smoothr transitions
Thanks girl this is my mission for July to be able to do Chaturanga Dandasana by the end of the month wish me luck xxxb
I can’t bring my chest to the ground…yet! I will practice this and looking forward to being able to do the chaturanga!
Got it!!!!! So pleased, I’ve been struggling with these push-ups in plank and half plank. Today, I learnt how to do it well! Knees chest and chin is fun! Thank you beautiful one:)
just finished True my third 30 day journey. Now to do this for July. Thank you so much Adrienne
Forget about part 2 and 3 I’m just glad I could do all three hovering cats without breaking early. It’s a step by step process though right? Lol
A bit confused as there was no Chaturanga dandasana in the vid, are these just poses to help do the pose? When I look online, everything points to Chaturanga dandasana being the plank pose (from one site: The name is derived from the Sanskrit, chatur, meaning “four,” anga, meaning “limb,” danda, meaning “staff,” and asana, meaning “pose.”)
So confused haha 😉
That pushing through is bad for shoulders. If all those wonderful alignment cues aren’t followed it’s much safer to touch pelvis down first and keep shoulders above elbows the whole time, so lowering only half way down with elbows in.
The knees chest chin is a shoulder shredder highly contraindicated.
Adriene, which muscles do you use to send up to downward dog??
great practice! so relevant for the times. thank you! super fan girl here!
Hi Adriene, can you please do a video that explains how to transition from down dog, to Chaturanga to up dog and back to down dog. This is a common flow for you but I can’t seem to do it. Thanks!
doing july 2020 felt so proud of myself for doing everything with the variations until i got to the ARM BALANCE omg! HOW
I think I’ll always come back to this video. Love it so so much!
everything is alright except of this girl strip club outfit….respect yoga and our culture
I really appreciate these videos, but can I just raise a broader question about the individuality of practice? It’s fine to know the orthodoxies as laid out by Sharath, but if in your own practice, you really want to do a handstand, why not? It’s your body, your mat, your time, your breath, and ultimately, I don’t see any harm in it.
Also, for what it’s worth, Stu is awesome and hella strong. I love his videos and sense of humor and curiosity.
How beautifully you have broken down the challenges into steps.. much needed for the elusive chaturanga..:) thank you. Hopefully this helps me.
Adrienne, I am having a real crisis of confidence with my chaturanga. This really helped and I will practice every day. This is not ego just wanting not to hurt myself. Thank you xxx
I choose love. Love for myself, and love to everyone! So happy I chose to do this, a day late but who cares!! I am doing it!! This year’s been a wild ride, so thank you to those who practiced with me! And thank you Adriene!! As always namaste ✌️
Does anyone know where I can purchase the mat Adriene uses in her home series?
every single time you do the knees chest chin flow, the angle switches and it’s hard to see what it would look like as u actually touch the chest and chin
Okay, so this transition has always confused me and I’ve talked to my teacher about it but am still a bit confused. But you sort of gave a hint just past the 6:30 mark. You said that at supta you inhale and jump forward, and then exhale before you do the count. That exhale is NOT in Sharath’s book. Without it, you would start your 5-count on an exhale, meaning that the next breath after your count would have to be an exhale. But you are saying, for sure, that ashtau is an inhale while folding. That’s an unnatural breath movement (inhaling while folding, before lifting) but you see it in padangusthasana so it’s not SO weird.
I just want to make 100% sure you do the exhale after supta, which isn’t otherwise mentioned, before doing the count.
Also, is the count ALWAYS inhale-exhale? Or can it be exhale-inhale? It would seem that after utthita hasta padangusthasana C you have the same exhale-inhale cycle on the 5-count.
Thanks.
Hello ywa community, I was wondering if I could get some advice with elevating my practice. I would consider myself an intermediate yogi, I have been practicing yoga as a supplement to my cardio and strength training for a few years now. I’ve been doing yoga more frequently, maybe 4-5 short sessions per week for the last few months. However, I cannot seem to hold any arm balances for more than a brief moment, and I want to start using them as transitions between poses. Since I do believe I have enough upper body strength, I think I am having issues with the mental aspect of it as well as balance. Does anyone have any advice for this?
Just love how you are so real with these moves!
Thank you
does anyone know if keeping your arms+elbows align with your core (as oppose to letting them fling out) get more doable with practice and strengthening? I find that when I’m doing the push up movements, I physically can’t keep them in as much as adriene does. thanks!
In this time of transition, how do you finish the sentence I choose…?
Thank you so much for your videos! They are truly helping me grow mentally/physically/spiritually everyday! Truly grateful I found your page. You’re awesome Adrienne!
I love YWA! I have three littles and I would love to introduce them to yoga in an approchable, fun way. Any videos for that?
I have extralong legs and when we go down from dog to the floor, I feel like a baby giraffe, no grace or finess haha. But I enjoyed it! Thank you Adriene, you are such a beautiful soul
hi!!!Thanks!! And really love your tanktop, do you sell them?
So excited to begin my chaturanga practice.:) I’m confused though in half plank, are you supposed to shift your weight forward as you lower down? Or rather, when you lower down fully, are the hands supposed to be in line with the armpits? The face? Or all the way down to the ribs?
Hi A! My lower back always hurts when I am doing upward facing.:( what is wrong
This is the first video of yours I ever did Adriene, a couple of years ago. Always used and loved Psychetruth (I still do), but I wanted to improve my Chaturanga so I searched and found this, which lead me on to Knees Chest Chin, which is probably my favourite pose to do, and then YouTube started suggesting more of your videos from there and here I am now having practiced with you almost every day for over a year, and back to this video again because I’m following the November calendar. So nice to revisit my roots in every way
Hi, This demonstration is exactly what I need to learn the pose, great help, but as much as I try, why do I feel that I just want to fall flat on my face?
I have been practicing for a while now and sitting on my knees or feet is really uncomfortable! Is this something that will go away with time or is there an alternative pose?
To whoever is reading this, you are loved. You are blessed. Your dreams are manifesting as we speak. Time is on your side. Everything will work out in your favor. May you find more love, peace and prosperity. Keep shining your light in this world. We need you and we love you
Thanks for the post, we love you too and we support you 😉
As I finished this practice, a bird outside the window gave me a song of encouragement.
Absolute bliss.
i wanted to do this month pratice but im a total begginer is this possible?:/ (edit: im going to try without the crow pose) ♀️
So glad I added yesterday Shift practice with the triangle from today. Thanks for this sharing from Adriene to each of you ❤️
wow, this is really hard! but i won’t give up. love you adriene: )
Hi Adriene, can you post a video on how to move from plank to chaturanga to up dog? I’m unsure of what to do with my feet!:)
This was a really helpful video! Thanks for uploading it!:)
Thank you for this!!! I’ve been needing more clarity on chaturanga for so long.
I think this one is one of my favourites! Ahhh, I love you so much!
I don’t really understand the need for coming down on the inhale!?! In every other situation (in my extremely limited experience haha), you exhale when folding. For me, there just seems to be too much to do in one inhale. Another really helpful video though, it’s nice to get the slow breakdown and tips for getting the balance right.
I am starting the yoga month of July late, but I am still going to document my process!
Day 1: This was an awesome practice, and is now my favorite out of all of her videos so far! I am not flexible, and it was definitely a good, simple stretch
Wise words I learned from this vdo besides yoga practice. Thank you.
I like the step by step progression. What type of yoga mat is that?
Excellent video. Love the way you so carefully explain all the details of each pose; alignment, etc. Love it.
I think my arms must be shorter than average because I could not get my knees above my elbows to become a shelf. I just couldn’t figure out how Adrienne was doing it!
Is it possible to press up without actually having a solid handstand?
Great tutorial!
I still couldn’t do crow, I will keep working on it! Thx!
After following the motions in this video in my room, I have a slight fever. However, the body is not tired at all, and the body feels like it is hot. When my mind is troublesome, I am inevitably distracted. At the same time, I thought that I was not well centered, lacked concentration, and poorly focused.
Can somebody give me an advice if this 1 month challenge is okay for me if I am a beginner or should i start with some other videos?
Adrienne, thank you this was SO lovely today. Allowing my mind to level but my body to still work on strength… exactly what my heart, body, and mind needed. Thank you! Namaste ♀️
Here on 2020 realising I love Adriene at every year. Girl you rock.
What a great practice! I am so proud of myself for getting into that balance on the forearms Very lovely strengthening within this peaceful practice.
Adriene… I just started doing yoga about two weeks ago and I agree with everyone else here, you rock! I do have a question, in the second sequence, when you bend to lower your elbows (and have your feet lifted) is it normal for it to hurt beginners wrists?
Thank you, Adriene. You are my one leg up for my many transitions now. It is life saving to have you always at home ready to help me have the best day possible. Blessings.
I didn’t know the side crow was a thing and trust me when I say I stared at the screen shook and in disbelief like whoa I cannot do that
This was nice…
then the arm balancing thing…
and I was like… nope… xD
Just came across this great video and I’m glad I did as it is wonderfully put together and very interesting, really love your video, a new friend here
Tum kaise sikhate Koi Ladki Nahin Thi Itna ghatiya English karte ho ladki
I choose to thrive in this new period of my life! Thanks for the inspiration, Adriene!
Can the chin reach the mat before the chest? I was finding that to be how it went for me. Sometimes my chest didn’t quite get there. I watched carefully, and tried many times, but it never quite came out exactly the same. I’ll keep practicing, but I feel like I’m missing something from putting my knees down (my back isn’t always as arched as yours after that) and going for the chest and chin.
day one for july. transitioning back into my practice in a loving way. love y’all
Hello Adriene! Is it possible to contact you to Work with a corporate Team?
I love your videos, and this was especially peaceful. Thanks Adriene. Doing yoga with you is the best way to start my day!
I love her practice, but the sound is so muffled, I have to look at the screen. I haven’t had this experience with other yoga videos.
Hello Adriene, I am new to this channel and I liked it a lot..hats off to you..thanks
i looooove your video! So clear explanation and always that super smile!! Watching at home from montreal!!
This was an amazing practice. Just what I needed. Thank you so much
I CHOOSE MYSELF <3
I didn’t think I would be able to stay focused doing yoga by myself but your videos are very engaging, challenging, relaxing, and energizing all at the same time!
Catching up with the July practices that I have missed. Thank you so much for sharing your practices with the world, Adriene and team!
This practice is so applicable for this whole year-supper appreciate it ❤️
Thanks for showing this hovering cat! I have weak shoulders and some shoulder pain. Chaturanga is a hard pose for me.
I love how Benji is sleeping in the shot. Shows just how calm of a presence Adriene is.
“We are more alike than we are different” Thank you, Adrienne. A powerful message for our current situation. Peace.
burst into tears at the end of this session. thank you Adriene.
Adriene! I love your videos and find them so helpful. One thing I struggle with is really clicky joints that grind. My shoulders, hips and knees, it just makes yoga a bit uncomfortable sometimes. Is there a practice you’d reccomend?
Nice work, brother. I have a lot of wrist work to do. Great video. Also, amazing sleeve!✌
That asana is more challenging when you need to flow from one asana to another every few seconds, such as in vinyasa flow or ashtanga.
July First #ywaShift month #yogawithadriene #fwfg
Happy month to all, stay safe, be healty, happy and living at ease
I choose love, for me, for others, for the world.
Been watching you for years and noticed how you room has improved over time. Quick question, what have you found for the best sound distribution. The sound is great and I’m wondering what changes you made to make this happen in the empty room…. besides adding Benji.
Adriene!!!
i need some serious help. firstly i can not get my hands in the right places and my upper arms are still too weak and I keep dumping. is there anythinv else I can do?
Today my heels touched the floor while doing downward facing dog…OMG….I never thought they would…butit happened….just like you said they would in one of your other vids ♀️
Hi Adrienne, please remove the sub titles, it’s blocked the views of the full postures.
Adriene, this is very helpful. I never do the “hanging version” because of lower back problems and this is a very elegant solution to chaturanga getting all the action you need
July 1: I choose to try as hard as I can do achieve my goals for this month (which include keeping up with the July calendar which I’m already a day behind
)
A little late here I suppose, but after attending countless yoga sessions and live classes. This has been the FIRST time where I felt that I was attending a personal class, the transitions were so smooth and thoughtful! Loved it! Thank you! Love from the UK
ive gotten very lazy this year and im going to try to bring myself back to yoga this month
Today was the first time I practice this yoga class, loved it, How u doing COACH HELEN CLOOTS??
I hope u r well, I wached all your videos from your ADVENTURE MOVING FORWARD TO NEW LIFE EXPERIENCE & it encouraged me even more.
Lots of LUV.
xoxo
d.
I choose to work on me, for me, to better me. Thank you!! You have a way of knowing what I need to hear when I need to hear it and it’s honestly as equally terrifying as it is comforting.
I’ve been doing yoga with Adriene for almost five years now, but over quarantine it became something more to me. Living alone and having to quarantine from friends and a family who lives across the ocean, these practices became an anchor in my day. Where yoga had always been something physical to me, I’ve really started noticing the “inner” changes it has encouraged. I’m starting late, but am nevertheless excited to shift into July, into things opening up in my host country and into new spaces in this yoga journey.:) thank you
I was always confused with chaturanga. Thanks for explaining details step by step. You are awesome!:)
Fantastic instruction. I’m looking forward to giving it a go.
Nice good for us beginners… realistic teaching… Namaste
Watching Doron move through asanas is a joy, his ease of movement and alignment superb. Take note of rolling over the toes going back and forth, as well as his perfect plank.. “Practice, and all is coming.”
YESSSS THANK YOU!!!! This is exactly what I needed at this stage of my journey. I am so happy I came across this! Thank you!!!!!!!!
Awesome! Now I can see my elbows in 90 degree angle that you’re supposed to have while doing chaturanga. I’ve been practicing for years but half push-up was my weakness. I figured I can never do it ever. Well, I don’t know if I can, but at least I won’t Injure myself anymore. The variation is good enough! Im at this point In my life that I’m over headstands and crazy poses. I’m older hehe. Thank you for this tutorial.
I’m going through a transitory time and this turned up in my recommended….coincidence I think not also I choose to be free from my past worries and limitations.
a great intro to this pose-so many people injure themselves (this would include me) in the quest to perform this pose when they really haven’t built the foundation of strength and alignment.I take it much easier in vinyasa classes, b/c I found I was flinging myself through the pose in an effort to achieve something my body wasn’t ready for.
I began doing yoga about 5 weeks ago and your videos are amazing! I am feeling so healthy and strong (and tone!)…keep up the amazing work! You rock!
This was the perfect video for me on the first day of SHIFT! I decided that day to accept a new job offer on July 1st and I was having mixed feelings about it. This flow gave me a ton of peace about my decision! Thanks and love Adriene!
i dont understand. there is no way for me to get the chest to the ground after i put down my knees. how? is it a strength thing??
I came here after my Empower practice (Strength 1) and thinking I could use some detailed Chaturanga Practice. It’s always great to focus on some details (as Adriene said, “that was a lot”) after all, yoga is a journey <3
I loved that the practice was low to the gound. I did the whole thing in front of a big box fan on a hot July day!!
My first thought was “I choose joy.” Which I do, but I then moved on to “I choose faith.” I am sorry to everyone who has missed out on something this year. It is a difficult time for all of us. Finally, “I choose not to waste the rest of 2020.” Peace, hugs, love to everyone practicing with Adriene in July 2020!
Hi Adriene. thank you for instructions, I am trying to do this practice but the problem is I can’t crease my hands when lowering down. How can I improve that?
This is not the chaturanga Iam looking for but u r cute anyway.
Here, a day late as I’ve been ill, I missed the last week of June and I’m so disappointed about it as I was doing well, but onwards and upwards I guess! Here’s to another 30 days of Yoga with Adriene..and Benji! Namaste x
Hi Adriene, when you feel inspired could you make a video for posture building primarily for the upper back. Its my chest and neck that are tight. And shoulders wanting to go to my ears, no idea why. My neck is a tad forward. I would love a deep stretch yoga version I could do daily for serious correction and alignment. Thank you for everything ♥️♥️
“at the start of a brand new year we’ll need support at a time of change and transition”. Early entry for Understatement of the Year Award there . Adrienne knows all.
I choose me. I choose me. I choose me. This practice was spot on for where I am today. Some heavy, emotional transitions for me, right now. Thank you, Adriene. Namaste
A great start to a new month of daily yoga! Thank you Adriene xx Namaste
Love your videos, please never stop! Thank you so much ♀️ It helped me… I chose to be happy!l
Thank you so much!!! Started practice yoga about a month ago and I’m finding your videos so helpful!!!
David mentioned Sharath’s book. Is that Astanga Yoga Anusthana? I found it on Amazon but want to make sure I have the right title before I order. Thanks!
Hey Dylan! This video was key for me, not only is my crow super balanced now, you inspired and i did my first crane.. all i needed to hear was knees in armpits and arms straight and do it HARD loli wasnt able to bring the knees down slow at first but after a short rest i did this again and it keeps getting smoother. Thanks buddy!
Adriene, when I get my chest and chin on the ground I end up too forward and the pull through is awkward. How do I fix this? The rest of my set up is properly aligned…how do I get my body to flow easily into baby cobra? Thank you! You’re awesome possum!
Would you please be able to post this in the beginners playlist?
Funny seeing you flex the gun at the end there, because I was thinking as I was watching, that you can see how your strength has developed over the years compared to this video. Consistency is key I guess.
I am so happy that you posted this! Getting back to basics, what it is all about:)
Day 1 of SHIFT: this is not a practice to jump into at 11:00 at night, after having taken 35,000 steps throughout the day. I will be prepared tomorrow!
Syu-“who the fuck am I talking to?” Love the realness, and how funny he is. Ty you for the laugh. And the information!
oh ya! I choose love. I choose meor like you saythe best version of myself
Thank you. Great points on breath to carry through in many areas.
Hey guys, I just wanted you to know that even though Adriene is super responsible and always tells us to be careful and respect our body, you should be extra careful and do some stretching with your arms if you see that there won’t be much in the practice. I did this video on July the first and when she asked us to go half way down on plank, I hurt my left shoulder blade kinda bad. I couldn’t move for the rest of the day without feeling pain. My boyfriend had to help me so I could dress and undress my shirt! And yesterday I decided to just rest and don’t do any yoga at all, so I could recover. Today I’m feeling okay, but I’ll be extra careful from now on.
Thanks Adriene, you’re funny, knowledgeable, patient and that makes for a great teacher
great video!! seems to me the real trick is the wrist flexibility
Thank you Dear Adriene, you are so gentle and kind. Love this hip opening sequence!
omg thank you:) you teach me chaturanga after two exercises:) I send you my love!
After the video ended I audibly said “Thank You Adriene, that was lovely” then realized it was a video so I decided to leave a comment saying that because it was lovely.
Understanding transitions has been so crucial to keeping my body healthy in vinyasa classes….such a valuable video. THANK YOU.
Day 1 of SHIFT. I’ve always loved this practice and today was also my birthday, so it was the perfect way to start a new month, and a new year. I choose to try. Even if it feels scary, or there’s a chance I won’t succeed. Still, I choose to try. Thank you Adriene for helping me learn to trust myself <3
This video opened my mind about what i was doing wrong, and sinceraly i go to yoga class and watch yt tutorials! Anyway no one told me about bending elbows when landing in chaturanga
Thanks as always! Feeling good & peaceful. I needed that! All signs been pointing to ch-ch-changes. Just read Martha Beck article about human metamorphosis and like bug soup of a caterpillar to butterfly we are person soup to our next life stage. Sat nam!
As a fellow yoga teacher, I would just like to say that you TEACH beuatifully.
Thank you so much for the videos. I love them, especially when you go much slower than this one….perhaps is it possible to categorize them according to pace? That would be super helpful.
THIS CHANNEL IS TEACHING ME HOW TO MAKE THE SPACE TO BE MY BEST SELF AND I’M IN LOVE WITH IT. Thank you so much for publishing your practice online❤️❤️❤️
Had to take time out this last week from a wisdom tooth extraction I totally read ‘yes that includes yoga’ in the no excursion or sports warning in the accompanying dentists leaflet, but gosh this was good to come back with I always chicken out from jumping in class based practice as I don’t feel as advanced (by which I mean young and slim) as others but if I include it more at home as a stepping block it can only help! Ty Erin!
I still cannot jump up, but jumping back is much easier after watching this video, THANKIES:))
