The majority of the calories in wine come from alcohol—not carbohydrates or sugar—except in the case of sweet wine (see below). A bottle of wine (750ml / 25oz) contains approximately 600 calories. A typical glass of wine (5 oz) contains about 120 calories.
Calories don’t differ very much depending on the type of wine.As a rule of thumb, white wines tend to be lower in calories than reds. Also, make sure your wine has a lower alcohol by volume (ABV) percentage, ideally of 11% or less.

Red wine has seven times the antioxidant power of white wine, but neither is equal to grape juice. Alcoholic wine actively dehydrates the body.

WHY is there a SPIKE in INSULIN when you add MEAT or FISH to a carb meal?
You could just not drink. Let me tell ya, its way better than getting drunk.
To everyone complaining that there might be some benefits for alcohol coz they don’t want to stop… these videos are not necessarily made to prevent you from ingesting things, but rather to prevent you from doing so coz you think they’re healthy even though they’re not. Sure, alcohol prevents social anxiety, just like smoking helps with relaxation. But the fact is, they both do so despite their health complications.
You won’t just become healthy if you stop drinking and neither will you drop dead if you drink. The key here is.. Understand the health consequences, then if you can’t help but keep drinking, you’d better do something else to compensate or else accept the fact that you’re cutting time off your life for pleasure. Simple!!
P.S. I’m not a drinker or smoker
But doesn’t protein also induce and insulin spike because proteins are also degraded in glycolytic pathways?
I thought red wine increases HDL though. You might get a bump in triglycerides but a bump in HDL is good as it removes LDL, no?
These videos are more exciting than crime tv shows, it’s like investigative nutritional research
What about avocado oil? My daughter in law cooks with it and when I eat there I feel sick. Is it the small amount of. Chicken or the oil she cooks it in?
Hello. I think this information might need updating soon. Starts at 39.05 https://youtu.be/IEz1P4i1P7s?t=2345
This shows, in my opinion, that as long as lobbying exists, the US is not a republic, but an oligarchy.
Isn’t that a bit like comparing apples with oranges? As far as I know were the servings that led to the insulin index mentioned in the video, of the same caloric amount. Let’s say they gave them 200g of white bread, meaning 500 Kcal. One egg weighing about 50g equals only 75 kcal. You would need 6.6 eggs to result in 31% of the insulin spike that our white bread evokes, means:
You would need 21eggs to result in the insulin spike of 200g white bread. What a heavy breakfast!
If You want to bring insulin levels down and thereby the risk of diabetes there’s nothing better than keto diet and intermittent fasting.
I do t buy this at all i was close to being a type 2 diabetic and had insulin problems and was over 400 pounds i am now 265 and live a keto lifestyle i eat once a day and have lots of animal proteins and heavy fats in my meal. I am no longer hungry can bike for an hour and stand and dont have pain in my joints in my legs and back etc i feel great. A vegan diet wasn’t for me or a whole plant foods based diet* there is no one diet for all and if people realize that that would be great. Animal proteins and real foods and excerise is key to go health and i believe that its good and will stick to it.
Why not do a comparison graph of meat without sugar or carbs and meat plus fats?
What’s with all the testimonies of the paleo diet curing autoimmune diseases? Because it is whole foods with lots of veg?
He is so irresponsible, he is spreading lies. Fats and starchy carbs simply don’t mix. Your either a carnivore or a herbivore. He is manipulating the study and only showing one side. If you see the study without the carbs you will see that your insulin spike is even lower, then carbs alone. If you eat high fat moderate to low protein. Your insulin won’t spike. I tested myself seven times a day, when I was transitioning to keto. Blood sugar from the mid 300’s to low 80’s. I achieved this in 10 days. From a diet that supposedly spikes insulin.
Yay I get to eat more frozen grapes, I love it it’s like candy
They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, “In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.” And they ask you what they should spend. Say, “The excess [beyond needs].” Thus Allah makes clear to you the verses [of revelation] that you might give thought.
Quran 2:219
Meat (=muscle) is loaded with glycogen, so it’s normal that insulin response is higher.
Maimonides, apparently DISAGREES with you Dr. Greger. MODERATE consumption of WINE, in particular is BENEFICIAL.
i guess you are a veganist and i get that you wanna throw meat under the buss. BUT
this is not surprising! if you know that insulin is also used to metabolize protein. fish is more protein rich than meats, usually. this is also the case when you eat protein from plants, but it has more fiber. the only answer is not to cut meat out.
the answer is also to not eat sugar with protein, eat fiber with protein, and preand pro-biotics that deal with insulin. GENERALLY eat anti-inflammatory foods with flammatory foods.
also you are pretty disingenious. talking about nuts lowering the insulin-response and then equating it to the oxidation response of the strawberry jam. why didnt we get to see the blood glucose levels of the jam? it probably spiked like hell. sadly, you embody much of the dumb person’s scientist. i bet most of your subscribers are vegans who are emotionally invested in this to the degree that you intentionally fail to show the negative sides of the non-meat foods and the positives of meats and they don’t notice. that is why i unsubbed after wathing a few videos after prematurely subbing.
But wouldn’t consuming grapes also increase my glucose levels?
god bless you for this information and also for that very much awaited “until now”
So what happens to insulin response with wonderbread and jam? Surely insulin is increased by adding even wholefood jam. You didn’t answer the naturally following question! Great video though I learnt new stuff, subbed
Well this is all well and good but if Nutrition Facts is interested please follow up what I am about to say. Eric Roberts (the actor) had a very mysterious experience connected to the use of resveratrol which was recommended to him after a he hit a tree with his jeep and was injured in many ways including loss of memory. He was able to get access to it and he described how it helped him immensely. I’m leaving out the most mysterious part because sometimes the findings of scientific research can only discover to much and I would like you to find his story and watch it.
The French paradox was diet. High protien and animal fat. Lol
Why do you always have to be so logical? What about all those ‘middle men’? How’re they all going to make money off us? They won’t? Just eat some whole grapes, huh. Guess I’m ok with my silly little whole foods diet, after all.
I wish this video had talked about the allergy impact of a lack of labeling. My son has severe food allergies, so I’m used to looking at ingredients, but now that he is drinking age, we have to look it up online.. and maybe those sources are accurate or maybe they’re not.
I just love your videos! So well explained and very informative!
Thank you for your work Dr Greger. Do you have any information you have studied on hormone replacement therapy or bioidentical hrt? I am going through perimenopause and would love your input on this. Thank you!
26 year old male here… NEVER been drunk in my life. Love it.
For people with food allergies, not having labels is a huuuggeee pain in the butt. I always thought vodka was only made from potatoes until I developed a rice allergy and had some vodka which was made from rice. My lips and throat swelled up really badly, but it took me months to figure out what was causing it. Was it gelatin? no…My new dog? no… Peanut contamination??? Because some vodkas would cause it, and not others, it took a long time before I figured it out-if it had just been on a label, I would have been good. It’s insane to me that they don’t have to at least put ingredient lists on alcohol.
Maybe then not to mix carb+proteins in one dish? How about having a vitamin c pill after each meal?
dude you need to stop looking at things so simply…….there are other factors that affect health besides insulin, the body is a system and you need to look at it as such….insulin is but one part of the cog…….if insulin is so bad what about the health benefits of fish heavy diets….clearly the connections are more complex…the type of food matter too…and let’s not forget that insulin is part of the pathway that signals cells to take up and use nutrients…
There’s the good doctor once again cherry picking his data to conform to his absolutist extreme vegan diet fetish. Note at 4:44 he underlines the first sentence but ignores the next sentence that indicates that lean protein and fish oil also help post prandial dysmetabolism. It would be wonderful if he could just admit that some but not all evidence supports a plant-based diet. Since he won’t do that my respect for his integrity is nil.
Make sure the grapes are organic. Conventional grapes are a member of the dirty dozen and toxic.
Literally every problem in this country is caused by lobbying
Doc gave me the yellow light time to speed up before it turns red.
Maybe we should be vegans. But if we do, I’d like to add some carve outs HEAVY CREAM, Ice Cream, BUTTER, BACON, Steak, Lobster, I think that would work for me.
Glad I never drink and no desire too. I’m happy without alcohol.
I 100% agree that alcohol should be labeled. However, in the time being we could just test for calories on our own. Other nutrient facts will be a bit harder but all you need to test calorie count is a few test tubes, a flame, the object, water, and a thermometer.
Anyone that drinks alcohol is an idiot and deserves to die from organ failure.
It’s funny how a majority of box videos explain why a certain way is so but always comes down to lobbying in governments…
I have an active gene associated with less empathy under stress. In the same way TMAO is seen to enable the Alzheimer gene, would the TMAO association with anxiety or depression enable such genetics? Would the active gene, plus carcinogen influence heighten resistance to the advice of a whole food diet? Imagining a trusted food source put into question, coupled with social influence to remain the same, and our innate need to be ‘part of’ rather than on the dangerous fringes, the unknown our own sense of preservation keeps us sick. Talk about forbidden fruit huh
Does Dr.Greger himself have a glass of wine or any alcohol once in a while? Just curious
Lololol I love this Doc for dismantling million dollar marketing schemes. Regardless of how technically advanced our civilization has become we just need to realize the basics of good health is good eating.
I love when doctor says “we didn’t know untilllllllllll NOW”. thanks doctor. you are saving lives.
what about alcohol herbal tinctures? they contain alcohol in smaller amounts.
If I drink even two ounces of wine at night, my fasting blood sugar goes UP approx 20 points. How does that fit in with your study results?
ever since studying health in high school, i’ve always read the nutrition labels on food packaging, so i was really surprised to find nothing of the sort when i bought alcohol for the first time
Interesting that eating grapes with seeds prevents cancer better than grapes without seeds. I wonder if we need to chew the seeds a bit to obtain the maximum benefit? Seems like not much would be absorbed by only swallowing them.
For the record, I subscribed to this channel to get nutrition facts as the channel name implies and while I understand what you are trying to accomplish, I have some questions and reservations regarding how much nutrition facts we are seeing. It is no wonder why people remain unhealthy, because most of the information presented is slanted toward promoting agendas, which there is nothing wrong with promoting an agenda, I just want to view ALL the nutritional facts when they are presented. I have had enough of each group or respective industry (dairy, meat, vegetable, medical, etc.) presenting free information that contains partial knowledge. Where is the whole enchilada (i.e. an analogy). It is no wonder I have had to spend 5 months researching nutrition and it looks like I will have spend more time in research to get all the facts, then decipher truth from hyperbola.
Interesting. Some of this can probably be explained by the fact the body doesn’t have a protein storage mechanism like is has a fat storage mechanism. Any protein consume beyond what the body needs gets converted to glucose via Gluconeogenesis. So rice and rice/small amount of chicken will have about the same insulin response since most of the protein in the chicken is used and a very small percentage is converted to glucose. Versus rice and a large amount of chicken will have a much higher response since most of the chicken will be converted to glucose.
ready to get blown away? The worse thing about alcohol if you want to stay healthy…isnt calories or sugars,..ITS THE ALCOHOL! xD Just dont drink at all! Sugars and calories are harmless in comparison to what alcohol does to you.

resveratrol may be a promising strategy to support treatments for the reduction of skin wrinkling, as well as reducing systemic and skin oxidative stress.

Amazing content doc. I really wanted to see a video talking about negative effects of whey protein, in case there is. Thank you and keep up with the great work. Cheers from Taiwan
i knew that was a myth i wondered where it came from thanks Dr Greger
I’ve noticed that I only see nutritional facts on light beer that is advertising its low calorie countNEVER on craft beers
finally this myth was debunked, thank you for the effort it just took too long…
They should have compared the insulin response after consuming animal protein vs. plant protein, not vs. almonds. Almonds are almost like butter.
Another great video! Putting the myths to bed..gotta love it!
One could argue that the detrimental effects to the internal organs caused by excessive alcohol consumption should be on there too.
Also, there has been a lot of publicity about drinking red wine in the “Mediterranean” diet and the concurrent health benefits of resveratrol, so I think this has contributed to some confusion.
In Australia we have a standard measuring system, and every bottle of alcohol tells you how many “standard” drinks are in it. So like, a bottle of wine has about 7 standards in it and a single beer has about 1 1.4 standards. It makes it way easier for you to know how much you’re drinking and keep track of your consumption.
Why the addition of animal protein… why not the addition of anything that needs insulin to digest?
You keep going on and on about the same things year in and year out, but there is no really good answer for understanding what is going on.
Appleholics! Lol. I think with that delicious bit of knowledge I am about to go feast on a delicious apple and be glad I’ve been sober over a year:) Best thing I ever did next to going vegan! <3 Thanks Dr. Gregor!
Way to hard to test:)))) now thats just lazy american way out.:)))
You told me chocolate causes acne, I haven’t had chocolate in 3 weeks. Tell me this… and I go get a glass of wine. I guess if my vanity isn’t tied to it, I’m weak.
Many thanks for uncovering another misleading and mistaken belief that has been perpetuated in our society.
The youtube Vegans are dropping like flies. They are tired of being sick and tired caused by the vegan diet. Eat some fish people and feel better.
Anyone else love how they didn’t show the yuengling bottle the whole time to avoid a potential law suit then picked it up at the end?
What if you eat beans with an animal protein. Does it also blunt the insulin response?
1-2 drinks a day is considered moderate? What is wrong with this world?
Glucose metabolism create acetaldehyde just like alcohol.
Alcohol is made from carbohydrates.
Lactate and acetate are also created. These promote cellular regeneration of cancer tissue and healthy tissue. To much “lactic acid sis” depletes NAD and damages mitochondria, eventually leading to glucose dependant cancer cells and death.
Oh yeah, ethanol is also produced leading to a nation of people who do not think clearly and make less than great choices.
Suffice it to say, I’m not a fan of carbs and sugar anymore.
“A couple thousand gallons of white wine a day…” CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
everyone’s arguing over calories on labels and im just over here with an allergy
hmm looks good, hope i dont have a reaction ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
OK but what about red wine as against just generic alcohol? I’m not convinced in this case, although I’m a Dr Greger disciple.
then how come people on ketosis have lower insulin? despite modertly high animal protein?
Alcohol will be like smoking one day, probably in a few decades. It will be universally regarded as unhealthy and less and less people will do it.
I thought for sure that halfway through you would suggest that the social aspect was the protective element contributing to the J-curve, but if it disappeared even without correcting for social gatherings, then alcohol is certainly a causative agent of detrimental health consequences.
Even if alcohol prevents some blood clotting and wine has some antioxidants always remember it is a carcinogen. No carcinogen in any amount is good for you.
thank you for your video. I stopped drinking when started my sugar detox and never drunk ever since (over a year). not even a drop of it…I feel great. my doctor says that all my plant based diet is a myth, she had many vegans/vegetarians with cancers etc…she suggested me to start drinking wine….I refused to listen
I feel like you missed the biggest group of people who would benefit, people with food allergies.
I want to know how many people get cancer from drinking a few times a month vs those who don’t. And how the hell can you control that in a study.
Thank you so f…. much!! I just knew it. That filthy poison couldn’t be good.
Hold up! Your titles state “adding protein”, whereas your mouth states “adding animal protein.” Now which is it? Simple question, should have a basically simple answer.
What about the beneficial yeast as a probiotic thats actively present in Wine?
Just leave the booze alone. Of course it’s bad for you! But ya drink it anyway to have a good time. It’s gets ya drunk.
I eat everything! I have never been obese, fat or else, I eat well and portion my food to my satisfaction but I think our bodies need a well balanced diet that includes fruits, veggies, meats and grains that provide good fats. Our minds are more dangerous to our bodies than our diets. If you eat to feel well and be healthy then you will be. Just be conscious of your choices.
Gracias, desde hoy cero carne de animales muertos, solía comer salmón y pescado, pero hoy los elimino de mi dieta, Gracias por la información, saludos desde CDMX…..
I went from alcoholic to appleholic over a decade ago and I feel great! -Somehow I doubt this story will make front-page news…
They call them `Spîrits` but they failed to mention what kind
Re: The French Paradox; Dr Greger refers to his video that disputes whether the French Paradox is actually a thing. The cherry picked study he uses as evidence it isn’t is based on the following facts: Based on statistics collected worldwide by the World Health Organization France has the second lowest rate of death per capita from cardio vascular disease of 172 countries, the French eat more saturated fats, consume more dairy and animal protein, smoke more cigarettes and drink more wine than nearly all of the countries with a higher mortality rate from cardiac disease, also the French are less obsessed with exercise than most Western countries. So the study concluded that because these facts do not agree with current scientific medical dogma on nutrition there is only one answer to explain the Paradox; the French are big fat liars who under report the amount of people who die from heart disease. No reason why they would but according to the stated study they do. They must also be lying about death rates from liver disease and diabetes also because those rates are also low. Before you dismiss my comment offhand or start calling me a troll for disagreeing with Dr Greger follow the link and read the study. I don’t pretend to have an answer to what the truth is behind the French Paradox (maybe better health care or vitamin K2?) but there definitely is such a thing.
I’ll eat the organic red grapes even though I prefer the organic dark purple grapes. I find the dark purple grapes much richer in flavor.
I’ve assumed there was some particular physiological explanation like: ‘If the diet is less than optimal, a little alcohol might improve things for some reason’.
The truth is: Nutrition is far from being an ‘exact sciene’ and so many people (including the experts) believe in things that are probably not true because it can become so complicated especially for two reasons:
a) A lot of people are not qualified scientifically (many, many pitfalls, especially when it comes to interpreting the results of a study)
b) People have either an agenda and/or a confirmation bias.
I would like to see more causation research vs strictly correlation. Ie telling me that people who do x are more likely to be obese tells me nothing. Show me how doing x will lead to obesity.
So in this case, I’d like for scientists, alcohol companies, fda, etc to show me how drinking alcohol can lead to a better life. Use randomized samples with similar starting attributes and track them over time. Control the environment and extraneous variables for better results. Is it that hard to do this kind of research vs releasing purely correlation data?
wait but was strawberry jam tested, or just berries? because even an all fruit strawberry jam is not the same as fresh, whole strawberry
Lifestyle interventions have no abuse potential???????????
Don’t be ridiculous.
I love this channel but I know dozens of people abusing fitness and diet. You may say they are not ‘doing it properly’ if they are abusing it but the potential is still there.
There is no ‘thing’ or activity that can’t potentially be abused by someone with a personality that tends towards addiction.
I don’t drink booze at all, even a small beer affects my training and sleep for a minimum of three days, so I waved it goodbye.
We need to be realistic in what we are saying, especially when it comes to things that lots of people regularly enjoy.
To state, directly, that the interventions ‘have no abuse potential’ is just bad writing and bad over-reaching science.
How are you to get people to trust you when something like this slips through?
I think you could live without it, a few a week at most, but if it did have any benifits you could get it from other things
what about taking resveratrol suppliments in a pil form instead of drinking wine?
Thank you as well as curse you for crushing a good time drug. Will do my best to follow your advice.
Now all your muslim friends and abstentionists from many Church will tell you:” See, we were right dude, despite all the propaganda around”:)
5000 cups of wine a day! I’ve got some catching up, currently only drinking 700 cups a day.
Sorry, but sometimes I just hate this guy. I’ve been watching these videos for years and none of it adds up. On my own I eat mostly plant based now, but occasionally go off the path and havre a soda, or a drink, or cake or ice cream. I don’t really know what this all means. Human brains are linear, and these things that he is talking about are multi-variable with a lot of complex interactions, yet he sounds confident like he understands what he is saying and it makes sense, but he never just says eat this, don’t eat that, or have this meal for dinner, etc. All these experiments do not add up. I don’t think anyone understands how human digestion works, and we are all genetically a little different too.
The most subtle poison is sugar. Fructose. They should at least list this. Everyone knows alcohol isn’t nutritional but I promise they are pumping in high fructose and other harmful agents. I believe anything that can be consumed should have ingredients listed. Period.
So now I do not know who to believe about resveratrol, award winning David Sinclair, or you?
Are you going with that myth that LDL cholesterol is more important than HDL?
Are people still really stuck on this false belief? The science just doesn’t support it…
You have an excellent narrative voice by the way.
This channel is a joke. I’ve never seen a YouTube channel full of so much bullshit.
So fruits are good, single-fermented fruits are bad, double-fermented fruits (vinegar) are good again?
Not surprised one bit! Even a glass of red wine is barely beneficial
Better of eating a bunch of red grapes instead I thinks
Wonder what Dan Buettner who has studied The Blue Zones and who claims the longest lived cultures all drink in moderation (he recommends a couple of glasses of red daily as part of his nine healthy habits for longevity) and cardiologist Dr Joel Kahn who recommends a glass of red every day, have to say in response?
https://www.facebook.com/7newssydney/videos/2018151958208927/
It’s scary when you see this on the news
Centenarians have been studied extensively. Their diets and lifestyles have been documented and observed over years. Drinking a glass of wine a couple days per week has not been shown to harm your health. You can dismiss data on the bases of people quitting, etc….But those large aggregate studies don’t account for some of the real-life human stories…How do you account for the 100 plus year old persons that are healthy (relatively speaking) and drinking moderate small amounts of alcohol?
i.e.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXyfCGDnuWs
A glass of wine a day is considered “moderate drinking”?? When I drink alcohol more than once a week I already feel like an alcoholic:D
chamomile flower extract is a very good natural aromatase inhibitor..easy tea to drink
Grapes are not the best source of Resveratrol though. That would be Mulberries.
(disclaimer: im no biochemist so i dont the fuq know what im talking about)
im curious tho: if u eat food….it enters ur stomach and then goes to ur colon(s)
but anything that contains carbs should turn into alcohol during the fermentation process
so why rnt we all drunk yet?
Okay, this is great information and I eat berries every morning on my raw oatmeal. But some doctors would say that because I had high cholesterol and have one stent, now I am on statins and have low cholesterol, I should still eat no nuts or avocado. So which is it? Does avocado contribute to or reduce cholesterol. The problem I am finding on a whole plant food diet with no added fats or oil at all is that I have lost too much weight. Nuts and avocado would really help out here!
My blood pressure is low -has been all my life, so a slight rise in pressure from moderate drinking that brings me into the ‘normal’ range is not a concern for me. Quitting my glass of wine or beer a day will have more of a negative effect on me than continuing because I get health benefits from the social bonding with my friends and partner and honestly a life without a glass of good French wine or glass of Guinness is not one I want. Better to relax and not worry about it and enjoy life IMO…Sláinte! 😉
what beer are you drinking because I have never drank a beer without it? Granted it is not in big letters like my frosted flakes but it is still on the can
If there is a beneficial amount of alcohol, it probably already ferments in our guts.
I’ve gone vegan off and on for about a year now and I’ve had my farthest stretch of pure veganism for 2 months. It’s been a bit of a tough road, but I think I’m finally making it happen. I don’t crave beef tacos or chicken burritos anymore and my waistline shows it!
How much protein did the research participants eat with the pasta? If you have more than 3-4 ounces of protein it will trigger an insulin response, but if it is lower the liver will break it down instead of the pancreas. This needs to be addressed in the research otherwise your results will be skewed.
That is scary. Shouldn’t this kind of research be illegale? My god how much politics there is in science!
Very interesting. I am hearing in many studies now that protein burns like sugar in the body, inflammation-wise it is better to eat smaller portions of protein, more veggies!
People don’t want to know that their liquid bread is making them fat lol
I don’t understand.. what I need is a comparison with an addition of plant based protein, and how that is affecting the insulin spike.. cause I assume of course an addition of any sort of food will spike the insulin response, the question is which will spike it higher the plant based or the animal protein.
The poor and without health insurance can’t take lightly this advice as a prevention technique.
Please explain why there is a “Blue Zone” in Sardinia:-) The question is, what is better, eating grapes or eating fermented grapes? Cells do not continue to burn sugars as you age, therefore eating fermented grapes seems to be a better option to live longer.
Lifelong sober over here and very proud of that! And I’m from Finland where drinking is well, the norm and something we are usually known for.
How about 375ml of plant based Jagermeister in one shot with a Red bull? Once a week?
My grandmother said you need to eat the food and not rely on supplements and it looks like the science has proven her correct.
According to this study, alcohol can lengthen its telomeres: https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2013/12/131205142127.htm
The conclusion of this video is what I always thought. If what makes wine “healthy” according to some people is grapes, then why not just eat fresh grapes? Good video.
I’m rather saddened by this news…. but I am optimistic about the liposomal delivery system that certain curcumin and resveratrol supplements use or are available in. They are also making liposomal lipoic acid, b complex, glutathione, vitamin c etc. If you aren’t sure what this technology is, you can google it for yourself. Amazon carries several brands of liposomal encapsulated supplements. The reviews speak for themselves, I found this one to be particularly encouraging.
5.0 out of 5 starsTaking this product has an observable positive effect on insulin…

Taking this product has an observable positive effect on insulin sensitivity in an adult-onset type 1 diabetic for which I am the caregiver.
If you’re counting calories, than you shouldn’t be drinking.
Or just take a pill…doctors dumb as they were in organic chemistry
I am hoping that one day we will know. You will be surprised the crap they put in alcohol and we are forced to call rude customer service representatives or write drawn out emails to find out what is in the alcohol and by law they don’t have to tell us. Gluten free? Diabetic? Fish allergy? Dairy allergy? Vegan? or whatever, how would you know? Just try and ask Crown Royal they won’t tell you..
Nutritioninfo on beer: beer is all the nutrition youll ever need
so you saying that Reseveratrol doesn’t work?? in supplement form that is?
1:16 if someone was that “super health concious ” about health, they would even be picking food that need labeling. If you want health just eat whole plant foods.
I’m really starting to suspect that being a human is very harmful to the soul.
1% vs 99%
do your own research, try it out for yourself.
he totally lost me recommending eating sweet sugar grapes over dry red wine, zero sugar.
he’s a slave to sugar like the rest of them, yes natural sugar, but sugar.
Like soda, I’m sure that alcohol nowadays has more new addictive properties that are causing the hike in alcoholics. Ofcourse if beer companies can get away with this, then they will. Money speaks volumes
Technically, bananas are a berry. Do they contain the same amount and potency of antioxidants as, say blueberries or strawberries?
So drink 5000 cups of wine a day to stay healthy? Got it doctor.
Yea…… You can believe EVERYTHING you see on the internet right? Ok 1st of all I love how this guy “highlights” passages in supposed “documents” he never fully shows you. I say figure it out for yourself do I think it’s a miracle cure? LOL I’m just not that stupid! but I can tell you I have been on resveratrol for months now & I see a change in my skin and feel other changes as well. What “works” for me will NOT work for everyone & in fact you may upon trying it experience different results all together or none at all. but try it for yourself before you discount it as “hype”
Resveratol is a phenomenal nutrient. I take supplements. I’m not sure if this video is just outdated as the research is very recent but yes it is a game changer.
Americans and Japanese people use to eat hot food, and Americans die more with esophagus cancer than Japanese. Americans and Germans use to drink a lot of beer, and Americans die more than Germans with liver cancer. Americans and French drink a lot of wine, and then, Americans die more than French with pancreas cancer. Americans and Italians eat a lot of pasta and Americans die more than Italians with obesity. Would be because they speak English???????
I think the logic is simple. People who drink high concentration of alcohol don’t really care to read, so why bother?
I’m disappointed with this video. Resveratrol has been shown to have both benefits and no-benefits depending on which parameters is being evaluated in humans. There are a number of meta analysis studies undertaken which have shown benefits in terms of blood glucose, no benefit for cholesterol, some benefit for blood pressure and some reduction in inflammation…etc. There’s many other studies which you can look up for yourselves. I appreciate the job you’re doing but I think you should revisit this blanket statement that Resveratrol has no human benefits and present a larger body of evidence.
I don’t know how exactly to fix the world but start with… “shoot all the lobbyists.” That’d be a good place to start.
Costco has started selling dried wine grapes with seeds inside from california (probably has some radiation from fukushima too). Can be added to cereals and the grapes with seeds inside have a slight crunch. The brand is rayzin com. Another option is buy knotweed powder from internet.
I’ve always preferred grape juice and nice, fresh, crisp red grapes to wine. The only wine I consume with any regularity is a dip of the bread in the cup or a sip during the Christian communion ritual when I visit the Anglican services. But most churches I have been a member of use grape juice, anyway, and that’s what we use at home when we do the “remembrance feast” in the house ourselves. Matzoh and Welch’s.:D
A little bit now and again is fine, have some in a sauce or salad dressing you’re making or put some in homemade ice cream to help it not go rock solid ; )
I didn’t know this about wine but worse; I didn’t know it about fish oil either!
DAMN that red wine…its so good tho!!!:)))Thanks…for the TRUTH.
“Wine is only good for those who sell it” sums it up perfectly!
Sir please keep it simple so that anyone can understand!! What’s conclusion in this video?!!
Awesome video! What about omega-3 fats for vegans via EPA and DHA? I believe Dr. Greger was in favor of algae supplementation as an ok conservative approach.
In Europe we don’t have nutritional facts on wine. The French where against it, because they don’t want anyone to know that they add a lot off additives to keep the taste the same year after year.
I always thought the “benefits in moderation” of ethanol was bullshit. I mean humans have evolved from mammals who have always been exposed to some ethanol, so we should be able to handle it quite well but there’s no plausible mechanism of benefit. We’re naturally exposed to some small amounts of ethanol from activity of gastrointestinal bacteria, but why would you benefit from seeking out extra alcohol?
The best you can say is that drinking a VERY small amount simply has a… very small negative effect. So a tolerable dose but for no benefit. Okay, in the past ethanol was relevant for inhibiting bacterial growth. Yes, I am aware that low ethanol concentrations doesn’t ‘kill bacteria’ but low concentrations of alcohol DEFINITELY DO inhibit the growth so a microscopic contamination of your stored beverage doesn’t become absolutely infested with bacteria and the toxins they produce after storage. But we have pasteurisation now, everyone knows if you want to preserve bottled water just boil it.
Maybe you should make video about expiry date on ‘table salt’ as well? I’m not sure why my Natrium Chloride can expire next year despite the fact that it has been there for the last millenia in the ocean / mountain / wherever
This is exactly what the Quran says. The risks greatly outweigh the benefits.
As for the million cans of beer, do they have to be drunk in one go or can they be spaced out during the day?
This video contradicts what Dr Greger claimed in a previous video, I thought eating a lot of fat with carbohydrates “gummed up the lock” of the insulin receptors thus the body creates more and more insulin contributing to type 2 diabetes?
Au final, on retiendrait que le resveratrol n est pas bon et que c est juste un produit de l industrie pharmacetique???
Men, I’m like ten thousands a health freak compared to the Average American (AA?), but I don’t get any benefits?! It’s an unfair world.
amazing vids just more info and more info, but really mostly pepole have fruits and veggies not organic, what can we do if we dont have that, i mean i prefer non organic then meat or dairy
I highly doubt there is not a singel human study on Resveratrol showing benefits.
NEVER DRINK ALCOHOL. IT’S FERMENTED SUGAR FOR FUCKS SAKE! POISON! WARNING!
They do the same about Rape crimes which are mostly done under Alcohol influences, but since most feminists love to drink they never ever ever ever mention that fact.
Why does leading Harvard longevity expert Dr. David Sinclair like it so much?
What’s the good dr talking about? I’m addicted to apples!
I don’t understand so we need to consume red wine with no alcohol and avocado?
People should just know alcohol is bad for nutrition anyway like not only is it all liquid carbs, but it bloats your stomach
Can you/someone please tell me if the alcohol from alcohol tinctures is harmfull?
Thank you so much for breaking the myths. Many people drink wine under the illusion that it is good for heart health. Any kind of alcohol harms the liver. Any purple coloured fruit or fresh juice can give you the health benefit coz the benefit lies in the “ purple pigment “
is the combination of sugar water and protein in sweetened soy milk similarly hazardous in terms of insulin boost, or does this only apply to animal protein? is drinking soy milk with potato’s likewise a risk?
so is it healthy or not healthy? so stupied video more than 5 minutes to get the answer
So after bombarding us with all that, what are your suggested meal plans?
In one study of 116 diabetic patients, 1 gram of berberine per day lowered fasting blood sugar by 20%, from 7.0 to 5.6 mmol/L (126 to 101 mg/dL), from diabetic to normal levels (13).
As far as I’ve understood, resveratrol has not studies proving effect on humans, right?
The more i learn about USA the more i feel like at some point they crossbreded with vegetables
I cant dink alcohol. one shot and i’m drunk and sleepy plus a fog all the next day. I dont think I can break it down well.
does this mean that moderate amounts of sugar is also detrimental since alcohol is merely a transformed sugar through the process of fermentation
Damit! I was hoping for a different conclusion to the video
God damn it I usually buy green grapes because they have better texture and taste
i love how they didn’t even think about diabetics who actually NEED to count their carbs to keep their blood sugars in good control but they bothered to mention people who just want to count calories as if that’s the biggest problem here
I figured they might not want people thinking the nutrients make it a food substitute, but the calories, sugars, etc. should totally be listed
This has to be the BEST video from this channel. So telling of so many things-carbohydrates, fats, while foods, alcohol, etc.
I was only a social drinker, but I quit drinking back in 2010. Signs in bathrooms warning pregnant women about alcohol made me think if it’s bad for a baby’s brain, it probably isn’t good for my brain; and my parents didn’t endow me with much to begin with.
FAME IS A BITCH, ONCE YOU GET IT YOU FEEL COMPELLED TO KEEP POSTING VIDS, GETTING THE VIEWS, GETTING ADMIRATION AND PRAISE….ITS TIRING IM SURE
Google how many calories has in urvpoison of choice by the glass and b happy
Dr.Gregor as a 21 year old in University, over 90% of the people I know go out for drinks for their free time, and as I’ve tried to drink less I find I’m spending a lot more nights by myself. As someone who eats WFPB how bad could the effects of social isolation be mentally and physically? Enough to make up for having a few drinks once a week? Thank you
You won’t live any longer not drinking wine but it will definitely ‘seem’ longer!:-)
Would someone please tell me, how can I contribute with a translation in a language that is not already translated (Romanian specifically)? The open translations are not activated.
Can you do what our microflora produce for us like vitamins and etc:?:)))
hi, i have a burning question that google can’t seem to answer!
Do you know the mechanisms that control fat cell size and new fat cell growth? Is there a major difference between the two? could over consumption of protein or carbs produce fat cell production while the over consumption of fat actually contributes to the size of the cell? I’ve seen research that states that fat cell production ceases in adulthood and then there’s research that says otherwise. it’s very confusing. Dr.McDougall says “the fat you eat is the fat you wear” but it is also possible to gain some fat by over eating the other 2 macronutrients.
Regardless of any possible health benefits, there are emotional benefits. I feel great for a week if I had a good time out on the weekend tipping a few.
a glass of wine a day is said to reduce heart disease. is that true
They are bitter, but not gross…I eat the seeds of everything…apples, pears, grapes, peaches, apricots if you can (these have the highest laetrile or b17)
Most fruit without seeds…are GMO and also sterile…you are what you eat…no wonder so many people have reproductive issues today.:|
I’ve heard (and that’s why I’m asking ) that moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages would be good for one’s health if (and only if) that same person eats healthy food while drinking the above mentioned beverage.
The reasoning behind this theory would be that alcohol would act like a vasodilator or vascular dilator, opening up blood vessels so that the good nutrients in healthy food would be able to reach deeper into our living tissues.
Is that any truth to that?
I’ve been thinking about trying alcohol to see if it helps me get over approach anxiety. What do you suggest for an entry level pickup artist with crippling approach anxiety?
Che ne pensi dei melariani? Che mangiano solo mele? O fruttariani crudisti 3M?
Conosci il libro specie umana progetto 3M?

Cosa volevi dire nel video sui melariani?
French government is under the pressure of the wine lobby…. recently, a government’s member, who is by the way a doctor, was not able to speak out about the dangers of wine consumption.
Ah shoot! Thinking I am maybe doing just a little good or at least no harm, a glass of red wine while I cook dinner has become an integral and quite enjoyable part of the process. Now that my rationalization that the glass of wine is helping my health is gone, I’ll have to seriously reflect whether the enjoyment of that glass of wine is sufficient to justify the health risk. I have tried a mug of green tea while I cook, and while pleasurable and undeniably very healthy, it just doesn’t have the same decompressive effect after a long day as a nice glass of old vine zin. I fully accept that making health decisions from a place of knowledge is far better than making them from a place of ignorance, but blissful ignorance does have a certain visceral appeal. Well I don’t follow Dr. Greger so that he can confirm my biases and preconceived notions for me. So goodbye Cab, so long Merlot, later Zinfandel.
There should be Appleholics Anonymous, for all the obese people clearly abusing high sugar foods. Apple is a very unnatural high sugar low nutrient food.
Wild apples are NOT sweet, they are more like potatoes. They were selectively bred to be packed with sugar and fructose at cost of all other nutrients.
True. I drink alcohol and my HDL is good but my LDL is bad. Maybe it’s genetics and not alcohol but I think that’s interesting
Do people really need science to tell him what to consume…? Man is so asleep…. Science is a wet rag.
Imagine my surprise when my sister sent me a birthday present and there was your cookbook. I was especially impressed and delighted. After many minutes of looking through the middle, working my way to the front I gasped to find your autograph and message. I was teared cause I have been following you since my “Hippocrates ” seminars…. and workshops and articles, presentations from before I retired. Thank you for all of your dedication and work and I am one soldier working for change in culture status through food. By the way my dad who I’m sure my sis told you is going to be 95 years old has been eating grapes very dark purple ones as part of his fountain of youth. As they say ” like father like daughter ” and I can’t get enough of them. Looking forward to your views on Role of culture change and nutritional food.
I’ve had to change a lot in my diet to get healthy so it’s nice for once that I don’t have to change on this. I never drink and tend to have whole grapes with my salads. Score! xD
I didn’t get it.. so is a vegan smoothie after workout bad for me?…
+ NutritonFacts.org I didn’t understand the part where a person with increased alcohol -> acetaldehyde metabolism enzyme or lower acetaldehyde -> CO2+water enzyme is said to have higher cardiovascular risk but is found to have lower risk… What’s the meaning of this? Why is this so?
Great analysis doc! I use some alcoholic beverages for flavoring occasionally but life is too fun to numb it with any kind of pain killers, alcohol included.
I watched your programs on microbiome. That got me to do more research: much the biome is not only in gut, but also oral. Your alcohol show made me think of this: Does alcohol, which I would assume kills bacteria: Does drinking alcohol, or even using mouth wash (which as alcohol) affect the oral microbiome and hurt our good microbes.
Is it better to drink a lot some of the time or a little all of the time?
But.. but why are most straight carnivores lean, smart and on top of the food chain but most herbivores are dumb, fat and/or vulnerable?
The goal is not to lay gently into the grave in a well preserved body. If moderate alcohol consumption gives you joy, do it, at least nobody had to die for the drink to land in your hand.
Wine I understand perfectly why having nutritional facts wouldn’t work, beer and most hard alcohols on the other hand it would make sense to label
Because the people who are drinking the alcohol most likely don’t care about their nutrition
Fixed it: “Is it better to drink a little poison than none at all?”
(Ethanol is, after all, used as paint stripper albeit when nearly pure)
In each of the examples you are combining meat, fat with carbs. What about the meat or fat by itself? What is the effect on insulin? Please advise?
People need to stop getting triggered and do some research in Dr. Greger website before drawing conclusions. He has videos on EVERYTHING(almost), he has interpreted studies with your so holly “clean” diet of organic meat and broccoli, organic fish, organic chicken, all your concerns and “counterpoints” have been adressed in the past, it’s just that, you are basing all Dr. Greger’s work and experience in just one video out thousands that he has. Cheers
Love your work. Could you comment on this study?
http://www.thelancet.com/journals/lancet/article/PIIS0140-6736(17)32252-3/fulltext
What about the benefits of alcohol on anxiety? This isn’t mentioned at all in this video or the last one. But sometimes a small amount of alcohol can really help people with slight social anxiety in social situations. I refuse to believe popping a xanax to help someone relax and have fun a work mixer or something like that would really be better than a glass of wine. And for some people, that glass of wine helps immensely in situations like that.
There should be an applaholics group for some Apple fanboys. Like ones who stand outside the store before a release to buy one.
Becoming vegan turned me off alcohol naturally and without any effort. I really do not crave a drink when on a Whole Food Plant Based diet.
I only drink when I’m out at some place where I don’t really trust the folks serving the food. A number of times people at the same table as me got sick but I didn’t. If you don’t trust the food but don’t want to be a party pooper, I think I’d actually encourage some moderate drinking.
this kind of research is what makes people not believe ANYTHING TFS!!!
I take these with a grain of salt (or maybe a salt rimmed margarita in this case). I also wonder if focusing SO hard on the science without the overall big picture undercuts the logic a bit. I’m a very light drinker, and I feel like the relaxation and social enjoyment of responsible/limited alcohol use might outweigh the straight up science of the ‘harm’ that it does to my body. There’s a lot to be said for the mind/body connection and how these things fit into a person’s overall lifestyle and well being. Great info, but worth putting it in context.
I just watched a program “how to make Viking blood mead”. made from hibiscus, to give it its deep red colour. Is there any benefit from drinking this most powerful antioxidant drink… I don’t drink at all. But knowing your thoughts on hibiscus… I was just wondering thanks…..
I tottaly see how after 5 beers people are like…ok tat was enogh I rechd my caloris maxmum
Think about how much money this would cost companies to get caloric numbers on everyone one of their beverages. How expensive would our beer and wine cost us, because you know the companies would defray their costs to the consumers before taking it out of their profits.
I love Vox. But the opinion at the end of this one is dumb. I’m sorry, but, alcohol is bad for you. I don’t need to read how much sugar or carbs it has.
I wonder about this study “Urinary Sodium and Potassium Excretion, Mortality, and Cardiovascular Events”.
http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa1311889
“An estimated sodium intake between 3 g per day and 6 g per day was associated with a lower risk of death and cardiovascular events than either a higher or lower estimated level of sodium intake. As compared with an estimated potassium excretion of less than 1.50 g per day, higher potassium excretion was associated with a reduction in the risk of the composite outcome.”
3-6g sodium would translate to 7,5-15g of NaCl. How can this be healthy? The WHO recommends 5g/day of NaCl. http://www.who.int/nutrition/publications/guidelines/sodium_intake_printversion.pdf
What if you eat the chicken without the rice question what does that do to the insulin Spike?
Alcohol saved my life! Google “alcohol + inflammation” I had 30+ years of pain and i avoided alcohol thinking it was bad. Had my will ready, and since i expected to die soon, what the heck i tried 2 ounces of wine a day. That was 4 years ago, and all my chronic pains are gone! For example, I had tennis elbow for 13 years, no more chronic pain! I still get pain if i overdo it, but it always goes away in a day or two. Now i take 4/10 ounce of 80 proof vodka once a day. a bottle lasts 4 months. Dr Greger is great, but he missed the anti-inflammation ability of medical alcohol. I say medical, because the amount i take does nothing but eliminate chronic pain.
Alchohol lowers intelligence, destroys the body, keeps one in a coma and not able to care or know what is going on around them, decreases lifespan and is a waste of credits. Alchohol is the perfect poison for the slave class.
The Egyptians used to give their slave/workers credits for beer and bread. The Alchohol kept the slaves docile and obedient. Why do you think goverments have no problem with the number one destructive drug in this world? You can find it on almost every major street corner, especially poor neighborhoods.
All those labels come with a cost. A cost the big guys can afford, but the little guys might not be able to.
Very interesting video and great point you make about adopting a healthy diet being the more logical choice than taking drugs to counter the effects of a bad diet. I have this discussion with people a lot. There are lots of things I don’t eat, because I know what’s in them and I want to avoid inflammatory foods. People at whose houses I can’t eat anything often say to me that my diet sounds like not a lot of fun. Meanwhile, those same people have trouble keeping up with me and are always complaining about being tired, having headaches, etc. People will rather take Statins, than change their diet, let alone exercise (and you don’t have to go to the gym 3 times a week, but go for a walk a few times a week, instead of driving everywhere, right?). And it’s such a waste, because they’d be happier and healthier in so many ways.
Who thinks that they’re drinking for their health? Don’t drinkers simply drink for the buzz?
Another very informative video, Dr. Greger! I have hopes for the development of Smart Drugs which make people feel relaxed and sociable without the intoxicating, addictive and carcinogenic effects of alcohol.
It still has benefits. It’s a muscle relaxer. Wine does have a great deal of anti oxidents and its a social fixation. I don’t think wine is a particularly healthy source of antioxidents given alcohols negatives. But like most things, the poison is in the dose. Which this channel never seems to discuss. I.e saturated fat is bad. Okay, but if you’re eating saturated fat while in a calorie deficit, bad things don’t happen. I have maybe 6 drinks a year. We are not made of glass. You will not die if you have one drink a week.
ok but does resveratrol not work or is it harmful? perhaps resveratrol supplementation is optimal for longevity. still need more research
Brilliant! Thank you Dr. Greger! So happy to read and see the truth come out. Many things I was taught as a child as well as an adult are debunked by your presentation of science! I love your work! Keep it coming!:)
I quit over a decade ago along with smoking, second best thing I ever did. First one was eating just whole plant foods for the last couple of decades.
Great, because I don’t like this stuff and I thought I will need to include some of it
I know one day I’m gonna die, so I’ll enjoy a good glass of french wine.
Would you please advice on Curcummin’s dose-dependent liver toxicity according to this study “Pharmacokinetics prediction and drugability assessment of diphenylheptanoids from turmeric (Curcuma longa L).”
I wish they would start putting stickers with health warnings on alcohol bottles, similarly to what we can see on cigarettes today.
I used to really enjoy avocados, but since I’ve gotten used to eating low fat, they are now too fatty for me. The thought of eating a whole avocado by myself makes me feel queasy. I’d have to share it, so it’s not as much fat in a single meal.
The other thing keeping me from eating them is that they are usually not ripe and it’s hard to judge when they are ripe enough to eat and not miss the timing and have them go bad. And sometimes they get squished or something and they go bad before they are even properly ripe. You can’t even really plan to buy avocados for a meal that way because you never know if you’ll be able to get ripe ones at the store or how long they will take to ripen if they aren’t ripe already.
Avocados are one of the most frustrating fruit to buy.
I take resveratrol 100 mg a day in pill form, it gives me more energy and helps digestion.
I don’t get why a spike in insulin is bad. insulin brings sugar into the cells. so why is a spike in insulin bad?
Nutrition labels would be nice but consumers don’t need them to make good health decisions. The calories in alcohol is not secret information. Google is your friend. Let me get you started: a 5 oz. glass of red wine has about 125 calories and a 12 oz. bottle of beer has about 150 calories. Yes, different brands and vintages will vary in their calorie counts, but not by that much. Calorie labeling for packaged food has a large margin of error as well. The precise figures are not very important when counting calories. Studies have shown that calorie counts on labels and menus do little to change consumer behavior.
Maybe light to moderate drinking or a trip around the social watering hole has some positive psychological effects. They may even outweigh the direct link to harm you’ve failed to represent. I don’t drink but given the broad spectrum of physiological variables you’re giving mean advice to people that might not benefit one iota from it.
Maybe I should resume enjoying that 100ml of port at bedtime after seeing the J shaped distribution curve. Thanks Dr. GREGER.
You mean I’ve been eating 5000 pounds of grapes a day for nothing!? Son of a….
Not to mention people with color allergies and not knowing what has it can lead to an allergy attack
I think he is on the money. Resveretrol really is good for you unfortunatley much like eating one flax seed is good for you. This is seen in other areas as well. For example in Hi-Fi you can spend $10,000.00 on speaker cables (no I am not kidding) that are measurably better (less capacitance say). However the difference is either outside the audible frequency or the amount is infinitesimal
to the point that moving your speakers 1 millimetre would be more efficacious but still inaudible.
I’d rather them just list the ingredients, for allergen purposes.
How can one doctor put out so much useful information in so little time, and speak slowly and take pauses in between points, no less? I feel like I just watched one of his one-hour lectures.
To be fair, too many people are saying “to be fair” in this comment section, and let me give one example of a drink that takes full advantage of this law. Jagermeister. The stuff is basically syrup. it has 16.5 grams of sugar per shot. Over 3 times the sugar content in the same amount of Coke.
But your old video said moderate alcohol was helpful (true or false video).
The public does deserve to hear the truth. How disappointing that doctors may see the invalidity of the study yet continue to promote small amounts of daily alcohol. And yes, there will be many forceful denials from the general public.
I can tell when I did cardio with a 40 of beer back in my stunt rollerblading for 4 hrs a day years… winded in less than a minute on that stuff
What about seedless versus seeded/older varieties of grapes?
Great video!! Gave me an insight into certain foods in a novel way
Are there any risks in having genetically low HDL cholesterol?
The video is nice….
But who reads that label anyway….
I m sure 95% don’t even look at the labels
I hear you on this. It pushes your perception of alcohol. But it does not explain the many healthy centenarians that drink a little throughout the week. Just Moderate alcohol intake….i.e. a glass of wine…..Because of the problems with alcohol consumptions, I get your point of view. It is the excess
Watch the below story:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXyfCGDnuWs
If you want to be healthy and have to read the nutrition facts WHY ARE YOU DRINKING ALCOHOL IN THE FIRST PLACE.
If you really want to calorie count or regualte your nutrition…. maybe dont drink?
Anyone health conscious. Why are you consuming this. It does nothing. Everything about alcohol is negative.
Hi, this has nothing to do with the topic but I need help and I cannot get it in my country. I have RA since 2001 and 8 months ago I decided to get rid of my meds and go on a plantbased way of living; I even stopped eating wheat because I thought it would exacerbate my inflammation. The thing is that I am losing too much weight (30 lbs so far) and I don’t know how to stop it without going back to my old diet. Please help me! Thank you.
I just went to Google, typed in the name of the be followed by calories and got an answer. Not that hard.
All the studies on cooked food diets is exercise in futility.
Wow so eat the seeds? They taste so gross!!!:( If it’s worth it though I’ll do it haha
havent drunk any alcohol for 2 years, never felt better ever in my life
No surprises… supplements… it’s a jungle out there.
Do the work. Study the researchers and their funding sources too.
Finally a voice of truth in an era of legitimate marketing lies.
Not going to quit drinking completely, but at least I’m not fooling myself into believing that alcohol is healthy.
Look, alcohol is not something you want to consume regularly, but for the appropriate occasions it can produce incredibly comforting physiological effects. Sometimes the brain just becomes so distracted and so distraught that it needs a temporary shutdown. I think for that reason alone it has at least some merit. Cannabis would be a better alternative for the same reasons, but it’s unfortunately not a viable option for many people.
I’m pretty sure you have a bigger problem than high cholesterol intake if you drink too much alcohol.
Wow, amazing info! Knew lots of this things, but know with so much specification:) Thank u SO muuuch!:) Just suscribed!. God Bless!!!!!
What’s with the preachy teetotaller convention in the comments? 1920s were a century ago guys, alcohol is not the devil’s drink.
Alcohol is provides a temporary break from ones problems. Conversations provide a longer lasting relief of stress. And it’s free.
ALSO FALSE!!! (Burger + Avocado) The Glycemic Index of avocado is as low as 10 (this means is less sweet or sugary as a tomato). This means that the pancreas will secrete a very small quantity of insulin. The burger and it`s composition will force the pancreas to produce insulin because of the bun which is made out of flour and sugar! (White flour has an glycemic index of around 85 which means that the pancreas will produce more insulin than for sugar). If you don`t know what is Glycemic Index, what`s the purpose of this video? Also, avocado is a fruit and combining fruit with any other types of food will disturb the entire digestion process. I`m looking forward for detailed explanation. Thank you! Nice video btw.
Drinking wine for antioxidants is like drinking coke for water….
Excellent video. But I think that your narrators need to work on not whistling their “s” sounds, as I found this so distracting that I had to lower the volume.
And if you do work out, NEVER do what that goofball at 4:31 did! unless you don’t like your rotator cuffs
Please can someone translate in chinese, thrn I can send my friends, they do not speak good enough english. We must try that chinese people understand, that her meals with eggs, meat are very bad for the health!
Who would have thought a flammable group 1 carcinogen could be bad for your health?!
what’s more toxic? repressing desires or fulfilling them with harmful substances?
Brilliant production as always by Vox! Convey my kudos to your creative teams who visualize all the information for the videos! ☺️
Dr. Greger, can you use activated charcoal to detox your body from lead and mercury you ingest from your food? If so, how often should it be done and how many hours should it be separated from your meals? Thank you always.
Is it me or this channel is dedicated exclusively to reinforcing the beliefs of those who are already heavily brainwashed into the cult? Nobody with an interest in health rather than in animals rights activism would buy this crap.
I always wonder about people who obsess over getting particular nutrients for their health, taking multivitamins and fortified drinks full of sugar, while eating lots of fast food and candy. We’ve completely lost sight of what healthy eating means.
Haha! I hope this shoots more holes in the whole “chocolate milk is the perfect recovery food” marketing non-sense that has taken hold lately. The inflammation response of drinking a milk shake a half day after intense cycling sends inflammatory markers through the roof!
Doubt it is what the alcohol, diary and meat industry all bank on
Bullshit!!!!I take resveratrol in powder form everyday and it really helps me…save ur lies for court doctor BS
Yeah, but what is the insulin spike with the fish absent the carbs?
Thanks for that information Dr. Greger! Although I don’t drink it clears up a lot of confusion out there!
People please… Not everything is about calories! Some people NEED to know other nutritional information.
…RED LIGHT! Dr Greger has spoken. Let it be so. Time to switch to WFPB for improved cardio health!
As a manufacturer of alcohol,I gotta say, it really would be hard to get accurate info and keep it accurate. Besides if you drink alot if alcohol you probably aren’t too concerned about calories.
Alcohol is liquid sugar molecule at the chemical level.
This is why there are no nutritional labels on the bottle:-)
I’ve always wondered this, I wanna see ingredients in it most the time
2:09 Other beverages and foods have nutrition labels and people do “have information about how many calories they’re consuming or how much sugar”, so why are 50%+ Americans overweight?
Want to make smart decisions? Why don’t you just quit drinking that carcinogen?
I like to keep it simple I just study centenarians they say eat potatoes and corn and move around they don’t read charts to make it past 100.
suggesting that eating sugar from grapes, vs a concentrated antioxidant drink with no sugar, no yeast..
the vegans and fruitarians kill me with their arguments for sugar..sugar is sugar. live or die, why so stubborn, why go out like Steve Jobs, Kobe Bryant..
i started drinking dry red wine about a month ago..I don’t fvk with sugar, so fruit is out. but i wanted high orac antioxidants, & maybe a slight buzz as bonus.
my digestion improved. my depression virtually gone. those factors alone are worth it. one glass a night of french malbec or cabernet, & its not placebo, its real.
I don’t even need to watch this video, nothing ever fun or tasty was reported as healthy on this channel.
Easy solution: Don’t buy it if it doesn’t have a label.
Better solution: Stop drinking alcohol.
Oh no!!!! You mean I can’t eat mashed potatoes and…… f*ing tuna fish?
BUT THAT’S MUH FAVORITE FOOD COMBINATION!!! (he said sarcastically)
I wish this study came out in my 20s or 30s when I was getting roasted by friends, family members, and industry peers for not drinking (it wasn’t for health, but because I just didn’t like it…plus, I’ve seen enough drunk relatives do mean or moronic things to last a lifetime). But it’s good to know that one decision I’ve made was actually beneficial…even if it was social suicide.
And yet there was nothing on the insulin sensitivity of protein without sugar, was there? We got to see what happens to insulin with refined carbs and animal protein with sugar together, but not animal protein alone. I wonder why? Eat your veggies. They are excellent for you, but you don’t need potatoes and pasta if you have insulin problems. Don’t avoid fats either. Your body needs them too. Eat real food, mostly veggies, some meat and healthy saturated fats. It’s.not.complicated.
This would eviscerate independent brewers, which is the only redeemable part of U.S. beer culture.
AMAZING AMAZING Video. Wow. Incredible logical thinking and reasoning. Very impressed with this video and the mendelian studies.
Taking on the “alcohol is good for you” propaganda machine is risky, but finally someone is doing it! Excellent! Thumbs up!
Why would you title the video this way when Resveratrol is not something you recommend focusing on?
FALSE INFORMATION! The pancreas DOES NOT produce insulin when eating meat or eggs alone (protein). Insulin will be produced only when combining sugar with any other type of food, whether it is meat, cheese, dietary fiber and any type of carbohydrates. Meat and eggs (protein) ARE NOT BAD! They do not contain glucose or carbohydrates in their composition, therefore, the pancreas will not secrete insulin. It`s just how the pancreas works, i`m not a doctor. STOP telling false facts aboyt how meat is bad! Don`t combine sugar with meat, and the pancreas will be fine.
Makes you wonder how island native all don’t have diabetes. What a bunch of bullcrap!
Wanna be conscious of caloire, drink liquor and stay away from the damn sodas, light beer is crap. Just drink regular beer. You ppl sound dumb, wanna know caloire, sugar and whatever else. If your on diet you dont need to be binge drinking everyday. Having 1 to 2 beers every now and then wont hirt your diet.
If the “fish oil supplements” were just alpha linolenic acid (ALA) of course it won’t have any improvement as western diets are so packed with omega 6 which suppresses the formation of ALA into DHA and similar by competition with enzymes. A sprinkle of ALA is against the tide.
Bacon double cheese burger with a large coke followed by a nice smoke and death, infinitely preferable to chewing on watery green veg.
Hi, I’d really love if you could make a video covering the topic of asians coming to america and raising kids that grow tall on the standard american diet compared to their parents raised with a primarily plant diet??? I’m vegan; have been for 3yrs, but my parents keep swinging that subject at me because I’m a teen & short, but the same height as my mom, but she still says I’ve stunted my growth… so I’d love to hear the facts!
Consuming refined carbs and meat does not cause “inflammation.”
Have you seen our Daily Dozen Challenge yet? If not, check it out and join in! https://nutritionfacts.org/daily-dozen-challenge -NF Team
that’s ridiculous. putting a nutrition label will probably NOT lead people to believe that alcohol is nutritious…. wtf
Everyone is saying nobody who drinks alcohol cares about calorie content in alcoholic beverages, but there are people like Type I diabetics who actually enjoy alcohol and need to know a precise calorie count to administer insulin while drinking beer. I can’t see a reason to prevent these people from enjoying a couple beers just because some people might confuse beer with “liquid bread”.

what a beautiful age we live in
Alcohol causes cancer period. Just eat grapes, and you don’t have to consume any poison. If you’re looking to relax, go smoke some weed, it’s cancer free.
The idea that people are not as able to make smart decisions about their food and drinks because of the lack of nutritional labeling is false. Studies actually show that since the introduction of mandatory labeling we’ve actually gotten worse at controling out diet.
Sometimes buttressing your arguments makes you look desperate and skewed.
Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me that drinking solvents isn’t good for me?! Bullshit!
Hi I LOVE your videos and show them to my patients/clients often I’m not a doctor, I’m a healer, naturopath and herbalist. I was wondering if this has been addressed again more recently or if this can be addressed in more detail? This video talks about over-all health, in general and mortality rate but not the specific effects on individual body systems. I personally get the feeling that there is more to it than this. What exactly are the benefits? Antioxidants? Are there not better ways of getting those? How does alcohol impact the brain? I drink alcohol about 2-4 times a year and I’ll have 1-4 drinks when I drink, normally 1. I find it extremely difficult to recover. Mentally and emotionally I feel less stable for about a week afterwards. I know I’m really sensitive now whereas when I was younger I used to drink a lot. This poses the question about age does your ability to obtain the benefits change with age? I’m not so sure that drinking alcohol every day even in moderation is good for you. Also doesn’t it depend what you drink? I mean there must be a difference between a shot of absinth to a glass of red wine..even between a glass of red wine to a beer? If you drink 2 beers every day I’m pretty sure that would impact your health more negatively than 2 glasses of red wine. Beer can cause candida the ingredients in some beers are toxic and disturbing. Maybe I missed something. Also I have to say as someone that can feel the energy of things (believe me or not) I can tell you now alcohol doesn’t vibe so high. Not to mention the fact that most people use it as a crutch, an escape and I feel in this respect it is being abused. People come home from work and have a couple of beers/glasses of wine to unwind no questions asked/thought is that really healthy? I don’t think it is. I am genuinely interested in your response. I think you do amazing work in the world. You’ve helped changed my life and the people who I now treat. I actually have way more questions about this but you hopefully you can catch my drift.:-D
One of the major benefits of alcohol is that you’re more likely to get laid.
If you’re “health conscious” then stay away from liqour all together. Leave up it to these nannyistic, whistle-blowers to make sure alcoholic beverages are “nutritionally labeled”. What a crock-o-shit haha
Now I have no doubt about alcohol especially wine, thanks Dr Greger!
Greger.. <3 Wish I could hug this dude! Wow.. So logic. Much plant-based. Wow..
I agrer chyurano, but i think purple grapes are just as good as red grapes, since red is a component of purple.
Why are they measuring insulin spikes and not blood sugar spikes?
Side note: Alcohol and Tobacco were made exempt from drug scheduling in the 1970 Controlled Substance Act.
The first diet,,, Trees that have fruit with seeds in themselves, and plants that have seeds…basically fruit and seeds Genesis 1:29
One of my favorite books is #Freakonomics so I love your approach to research
Thousands of studies repeatedly attest to a lower glycemic response for all proteins, even meat, as lower than for potatoes and rice. Something is really wrong with these muddled “facts”.
If you don’t like it, then don’t take it. Quit whining about it.
Thanks for these videos on wine and such. It always bothers me when people say “Oh wine is good for you don’t ya know?” and not realizing it’s the GRAPES not the alcohol that is beneficial, just parading around their bad habits. If there are any studies that could be put together for chocolate being “good” for us I’d love to see that. Thank you so much for what you do Dr. Greger!
