I really dont like counting calories cause it stresses me out and I gained a bunch of weight after loosing it. I started to write it down in a journal right before I go to bed, I was wondering, do you get really sleepy when your body goes on starvation mode? because I didn’t have any energy for anything for a while I literally come home and just want to lay down:(

this video comment section taught me most people are morons when it comes to nutrition. A calorie is a metric of how much food energy is literally burned in a literal fire. your body does NOT take food and burn it with fire. Therefore this metric is basically useless from a nutritional standpoint. Dr. Fung’s point was that certain foods release certain hormones, so pure sugar calories are going to release fat storage hormones where as protein and fat calories don’t provoke that response in the body as much.

Just fyi… protein isnt high on keto… its moderate, cause your body can break down proteins like carbs… so you cant eat too much protein. Fat yes! High fat for sure:)
theres so muccccccch info to take in when trying to eat healthy….. one place says less calories others say calories dont matter one says to much fruit is bad one says to much fruit is bad…. stuff like that then you hear that fats are bad but now your body needs them! its so confusing. Counting calories can be good when loosing weight, I lost 2 stone by doing it that way. If your just being healthy theres no need to count them really.
Counting calories is not ridiculous. Creating a calorie deficit is the only way to lose fat. This video is not helpful for confused overweight people trying to change their habits.

I am a male in my 50s, 5’3″ in height. After several back surgeries, I ballooned to 203lbs (was at a chunky 145lbs before surgery). It took me a little over a year to get down to 128lbs (3lbs from my goal). I counted calories AND I quit using back pain as an excuse not to exercise. Lost 8″ in my waist and double digit BMI. I have a slight issue with the phrase “eating less” that she says several times. A person can actually eat a greater volume of food and less calories by incorporating more vegetables. You don’t need to starve or even feel hungry to create a calorie deficit.

because I can somewhat agree. Every body has a different reaction to things. But counting calories is still a VERY important step to lose weight.
To the person reading this that is on the market for their next diet: Skip advice from guys like this, tune it out of your life, and do this one thing instead: count your calories. It works. And you won’t be wasting your time overcomplicating things. Chances are you’ll have succes if you do this and make it a habit. If you want to make sure, then don’t make it your “diet”. Keep watching your calorie intake even after you’ve lost weight, and you will accurately be able to control your weight.

It’s pretty simple. If you aren’t losing weight after some time then lower your calories. Yes, your basal metabolic rate changes as your body changes, but that’s why you keep track of your weight loss and the calories you’re consuming. If your BMR slows, then you drop calories. It’s not rocket science. Be patient, listen to your body, COUNT YOUR CALORIES, track your weight loss, then adjust as needed. It’s not hard. Everyone overcomplicates weight loss probably because they are struggling at it themselves because they aren’t doing the necessary things like I mentioned above, so they blame other factors. Yet, let me watch everything you eat for months on end and count your calories and I can tell you why you’re not losing weight. People simply aren’t doing it right then justifying why they can’t. They are either lazy, not educated enough, not doing it properly or making excuses. If you look at the tragic events of the holocaust and those forced into concentration camps, these guys were skin and bones because they were forced to not eat and they were starving. It’s not like those in concentration camps had the luxury of making excuses or overcomplicating weight loss, like a lot of people who are overweight in our societies. It might not be 100% scientific correct to say that a calorie is a calorie. But actively watching your intake and expenditure will allow you to control your fat percentage.

It’s a guarantee if you burn more calories than you eat you will lose weight. I think in simpler terms if you eat less but also move less then there is no deficit. The only way to truly be in a deficit is to be slightly hungry. If you aren’t a tad bit hungry, you’ve eaten the same calories as you burned or more.

Watch Supersize vs Superskinny program. Most super skinny people there survive on sugar alone. Crisps, chocolate bars, Coke, some drink 20 teas a day with 5 sugars in each cup. The only reason they stay skinny and underweight they eat very few calories, even if those calories are sugar!
My own friend is living proof. Vegan, eating carbs only, including all the refined “bad” ones and sugar but she only eats tiny portions. She’s 53kg and 172cm. Skinny! And not even put on weight during lockdown…

I think he’s a biochemistry nerd and he believes in fasting and the benefits it has chronic diseases like diabetes where hormones like insulin are key to solving those issues. He’s interested in the hormones and other biochemical signals released in the blood stream in response to diets and exercise. Our body does respond to calorie deficits by decreasing our metabolic rate which makes us lose less fat even when we are at a deficit. We call this a plateau and to fix it, we change our diet temporarily to get our bodies to biochemically change our metabolic rate. Then we go back to our calorie deficit and our bodies take time to adapt again. During that time, we lose weight. So he’s right, but he’s also misleading in how he presents the idea because he wants your attention. If it was impossible to lose weight or a “waste of time” counting calories, then there would not be a mountain of scientific evidence that suggests that it works as a weight loss strategy. And as most people in the comments have pointed out, they’re losing weight just fine. I’ve tried counting calories and I lost weight consistently as well.
It wasn’t ridiculous for me. I lost 19 lbs in 3 months and dropped my waistline by about 4 inches. Despite what snake oil salesmen tell you it’s very simple. To lose weight you have use more energy than you consume. No rocket science involved.
I lost 50 pounds by tracking my calories. Yes, I also changed my Diet (Home cooked, no junk food, sweets, alcohol, soda etc), and did some exercise,..but no cardio,…mostly weights. If the thesis in this video is true, I could reduce my calorie intake to (lets say) 500 cal or even 300 cal a day, and my body would adjust?,…I would loose no weight??? What if I only eat 10 calories a day, would my body adjust or would I loose weight to the point where I eventually starve? I know that we digest different nutrition in different ways, and that there are people who have a higher metabolism rate than others,…but that only means, that you have to find your specific calorie requirement. Yes, the BMR tools will give you just a rough idea,…but a very useful one. Your body will adjust, but only within boundaries and you will have to react to it. It took almost a year until i reached a plateau and had to change things up a little.

Well, what he said is partially true. When you reduce calories in or exceed your calories out, your Basic Metabolic Rate will reduce, but it will not reduce so much. But that is the way too loose fat, if your BMR reduce and your weight reduction is stagnant, just go lower on calories. Your BMR will not forever reduce. Take some coffee or tea to boost it for a while when you wanna do some work.

I’m 42. I have been counting calories for a year now. At 5’11 feet tall, I came down from 265 pounds to 225. That includes falling off the wagon sometimes. It works completely.
I feel counting calories is good for SOME people when losing trying to lose weight. People that have some mental illnesses or something similar I don’t recommend counting calories because there is a chance of developing an eating disorder which in the long run is terrible. Instead focus on changing what you eat daily from an unhealthy and sugary, and fatty foods to a more balanced and overall healthier diet along with some exercise.
They need to quit telling people to stop counting calories. He’s basically still saying count calories. All of these diets count calories so you may as well just count calories and exercise to get down to your ideal weight just like they said a long time ago… If you go back up more than 5 lbs or so, count them again.
Lost 130 pounds counting calories. You automatically eat healthier because you have to survive all day with a limited amount of calories so you need more bang for your buck.

No one said the calories of kale and brownies are the same. The perso that said that is stupid yes not all calories are good, we should know that. But NOT counting calories does not work for everyone
The thermogenic effect of food is the bottom line. This depends on what is consumed. If it is composed of lipids, protein or carbohydrates. These basic building blocks all require different energy expenditure by the body to be absorbed. Proteins requires the most energy for break down, with carbohydrates and lipids coming in at 2 and 3. In the end it is calories in and calories out, energy expenditure subtracted by total calories consumed is final. Its physics.
This is why you’re supposed to eat a high protein diet and resistance train while keeping your deficit as small as possible, thats how you preserve your metabolic rate and limit the amount it reduces by.

I have a question…. My husband and i are trying to lose weight. He has a chronic paim comditiom that prevents him from being active. Right now all he can do physically is walk for maybe 40 min a day and anu other mobility he reserves gor thimgs he needs to do i.e: taling care of a dog and kids. Calories in, calories out does not work. Look at those people that participated in the biggest loser, their weight came back. As per Dr. Fung “You can exercise all you want but you cannot exercise your liver”.

I count calories, 71 pounds lost in 10 months. I keep it simple, 2 pounds a week. Best diet I have ever been on and I don’t have to deprive myself of my favorite food, just eat them in moderation and make sure they fit into my daily calorie limit. Everyone doesn’t want to be on diets where you can’t eat fruit, bread, rice, etc. Do what works for you! Are people not supposed to try to lose weight because calorie counting is being called stupid?? If it works for them, let them live!
Counting calories is fine. Obsessing over calories is the problem many have. Like count them in a manner that’s accurate to the 100s….but don’t sit there and obsess over if you added one more clove of garlic or a teaspoon more of coffee creamer that you should be counting. There are also many things that aren’t even necessary to count. Along with the more commonly known things like celery etc that people say don’t matter, I also wouldn’t count any greens or whole foods below 20 calories.
Counting calories is a great way to curb overeating initially, resulting in some weight loss initially. If you continue to monitor calories for what your BMR at your goal weight would be, continue exercise, reduce the calories that come from carbs, and switch calories to more nutrient dense calories while remaining in the range you wantyou will see an improvement in steady consistent weight loss. The truth is that the only way people could lose weight in a sustainable way and keep the weight off for good was by counting calories and then maintaing the same diet. No one can overcome termodynamics: calories in vs calories out.
What if I count calories AND eat healthy, unprocessed foods? The way I see it, when I reach my target weight, I won’t go back to eating bad, processed foods like I used to, I will simply keep eating the same thing except a little bit more since I won’t be aiming to lose but simply not gain. Does that make any sense? I’m genuinely curious. I am counting calories because it gives me a feeling of being in control, whereas if I was not, I could overeat calories, even with good foods! Er a calorie is a calorie. Different foods have different nutrient breakdowns but it is still a calorie from a measurement point of view!!

The BMR is for calculating the calories are to eat to maintain weight correct? Also, if im exercising (im running) for 30 min a day would i kinda be between 2 & 3 on the active level since im not quite a training but more active thsn someone whos say on their feet all day in clothing store (your example)?

Haha, seriously:) This is a longer video, but I really hope that it can be helpful to you if you have been struggling with calories, and getting obsessive with counting calories, or have been feeling frustrated about losing weight. There is no such thing as a “weight loss secret” (unfortunately, lol) BUT this is the closest thing (that has helped me such a great deal)! What bring me to tears when I try to lose weight is my drinks (and not talking about alcohol). They let the calories add up so quickly and then it’s just tea and coffee, not even my breakfast, lunch, dinner or snacks, so what must one drink, only water or black tea and black coffee. I try to stick with 3 cups of coffee with milk a day and water in between, but with frothed milk it’s about 120 150 calories depending on the size of coffee. So what do other people do? Please give advice, how do you tackle a day without caffeine. Do you only drink a coffee in the morning and water during the day or drink them black or don’t drink coffee or tea at all. Goodness me, what do I have to be exited then about if I can not sit and enjoy a coffee on a cold day or after a hard days work in front of the telly and I coffee to open my eyes is a must. Now I eat only a fruit for lunch with a coffee, because there is not enough calories for breakfast with a coffee, normal lunch and a coffee and dinner with a coffee. As something must give way and that is now lunch. Can’t believe that 1200 calories can be used up do easily. If it isn’t enough giving up cake and tarts, now the coffee seems to go as well.

Title is misleading. Hes trying to explain macronutrients but he keeps calling everything calories. Too simplified. He also didnt mention how exercise is another big factor in weight management
But isn’t cutting carbs essentially caloric restriction (aka dieting)? Also, isn’t glucose (derived from whole foods, like fruit) our body’s preferred fuel source?
For some reason, its always the individuals who promote intermittent fasting, keto, or low carb that have a problem with the calories in vs calories out model. There is no debate with this, regardless of what you eat or when you eat, you NEED a caloric deficit to lose weight. The concept he mentions regarding your metabolic rate slowing down when you reduce calories does happen, but not to the extent in which in stops you from losing weight. When you’re on a deficit, it is strongly advised that you keep your calories as HIGH AS POSSIBLE while maintaining a deficit and eating a high protein diet with resistance training. Those in combination will in fact preserve your metabollic rate.
This is a good video with some good information BUT, I don’t care for how she puts everyone in the same spectrum. Like when she says that when you count calories you basically only eat packaged or processed foods because its easier to keep up with your calorie intake. Maybe true for SOME but not many. The statement was also correct about your body being smart and being able to adapt therefore you won’t lose weight anymore. There are several ways to combat that like carb cycling, increasing your calorie intake to maintenance levels or slightly higher for a week. Its just the same with working oit which wasn’t mentioned at all. When you work out your body will get used to the same exercises over and over. So those exercises won’t have as much affect as it did initially. So you change up your exercises to shock the body. Muscle memory is real but there are ways to combat it. Bottomline, you can lose weight with or without counting calories. For people who are dedicated and disciplined there is nothing wrong with counting calories. Everyone who counts calories don’t just eat packaged foods and processed foods. I would like to see another video where she shows the positives and negatives of calorie counting with out bias. And adds in the many other factors like eating healthy while counting calories, working out while counting calories, and how to avoid plateaus while calorie counting. Cause of all that can be done. Instead of misleading people who probably have done no research for themselves.
“science backed means” and “Holistic methods” do not belong together. Your BMR reduces as your body mass reduces…that’s physics. If you do not reduce your calories as you lose weight… you stop losing weight. It’s not confusing to think that a body at 200lbs uses less energy than a body at 250lbs.
Obviously your content is not for me, but some of your ideals you’re preaching will hurt people. You claim to be science based but your oversimplification of some of these topics is insane. Counting calories is very much a useful tool, not just to hit a number. Its useful to make people think about what they are eating and how much. Claiming it will cause you to GAIN weight with 0 evidence while citing “science” as one of your driving ideals is disingenuous. Counting Calories is a tool anyone who is counting calories without paying any attention to macro nutrients is using the tool wrong.
If you’re 300lbs who lives on twinkies, yes reducing your twinkie calories will see a short term loss of weight, calories in = calories out. However it does NOTHING for the obvious food addiction and malnutrition that the person is obviously suffering. Which is why the weight comes back. You can find sources all over the internet that explain this in great detail. Legitimate ones… that actually show the studies and science behind their information.
The biggest loser contestants did indeed gain their weight back, because they were put on nearly life threatening diets with nearly life threatening amounts of exercise. They were monitored daily by doctors to make sure they didn’t drop dead or have a cardiac crisis. Their hormones were destroyed and they were given absolutely no support or training for what to do after the show was over. You can find interviews with contestants who explain exactly how they ended up gaining the weight back, its not a mystery.
So far as I can tell this channel just wants to copy the nonsense of the Thomas Delauer variety. Spin information to suit their needs and look pretty for the camera. “follow my fad because it worked for me but I can’t be bothered to properly explain homeostasis and how it affects weight loss”.
Judging by your engagement your audience has already figured this all out though.

It would have been better if I found out this “Yamzoko Weebly” (Google it) a couple of years back. I reduced 12 lbs in 3 weeks so far. There is certainly still need of workouts even just a couple of times a week and also the foods to eat must be best. It showed awesome results for me. I surely advise the product, wish it works as excellent for you mainly because it does for me..

Guys. lost a lot of weight does not need to be hard (I used to think it did). I’m going to give you some tips now. Look for a popular weight loss secrets called Custokebon Secrets (do a search on google). Thanks to it I’ve lost a ton of weight. I shouldn’t even be speaking about it cause I do not want a lot of other guys out there running the same game but whatever. I am just simply in a great mood today so I’ll share the wealth lol.

So, as someone who has a hard time eating too much or can’t help but eat what I’m craving, if I don’t count my calories I have a hard time controlling how much I eat. So what do I do if counting doesn’t work? I’ve lost weight with counting calories before.

if i need say 2000 calories to maintain my weight, and im on a 500 deficit, after eating the 1500 calories that day do i also need to take into account the activity i did that day like say i burned 600 calories, do i need to get that 600 calories back in food to make sure i am at 1500 no matter what?

I really needed this video. For a year I have been counting calories and exercising all the time and it has affected me in such a bad way. I got anxiety whenever I was invited to eat out, because I didn’t know the amount of calories in the food and all I had in my head was numbers and macros. My whole life was planned around food, and I cried my self to sleep every night because it was stressing me out so much. I pretty much had no social life, because I would avoid anything where food was in included. I would stick to 900-1200 calories for a week or two and then just eating one wrong thing and telling myself I messed up so I might as well eat everything unhealthy I can find, and then I ended up binging. This was an ongoing cycle for a long time. After watching this video yesterday I realised a lot of things. I deleted my life sum app, and decided to start intuitaive eating. It is my first day and I’ve just had breakfast and it was so hard not counting the calories, but I will push myself because I want to live and healthy lifestyle. Physically and mentally. And yes the couple of pounds I would like to lose may take a little longer now that I am not counting calories, and maybe I will lose them quick I don’t know but that isn’t my first priority now. My happiness is. I have a long road ahead of me but I am not giving up. Thank you so much for this video this was just what I needed to hear. You are such an inspiration ❤️
I honestly love your honesty, some times we might feel alone on the hardship of our journeys. I was born with diabetes so from my toddler years I was worried about my weight and how I was always bigger (taller and fatter) than other girls, I would workout to unhealthy levels and under eat. Now I focus on the quality of my calories, not the quantity. It was a long journey but I do believe that you start getting results as soon as you focus on health and not on the numbers

I eat very healthy and still count calories. The point is you should still count calories no matter what you’re eating. (fried is still a no no)

You can’t out exercise a bad diet. A few seconds on the lips, lifetime on the hips. It is much easier to eat less than to burn the calories overconsumed.

just walking for 1 or 2 hours can make u lose properly couple ponds you dont have to count calories. skinny is not always perfect, blonde is not always pretty, pretty eyes are not always cute, you are you and you dont have to change your beautiful self for any else unless its about health..
Damn I love you! I came to the same conclusion myself after having done my own studies on human anatomy and physiology, and studying how calories actually work. The only thing I would add is that to work out more efficiently it’s good to know how many calories you burn with a particular routine, which you can figure out by looking up how many calories you burn with each particular exercise.
I have always thought that dieting is eating only green vegetables and drinking water. NextLevelDeit proved me wrong. I am eating delicious and nutritionally rich food and still reaching my fitness goals.

200 ml of almond milk is 26 calories where do you get 1 point????? For 100 calories you need 800 ml of almond milk. Unless you are using sweetened almond milk which I doubt that woolies does and sweetened almond milk is not healthy. Very misguided and not a nutritionist at all…

What bugs me about this video is that he didn’t provide any solutions. He just threw a wrench in everybody’s plan and made a whole bunch of people uncomfortable. I say odds are in you are eating at or below your daily calorie intake and regularly exercising you will probably lose weight. Seems to work for most people.
OMG!!!!!!!!!!! Yessssss…. I am losing weight through a serious lifestyle shift exercising and eating well without counting calories AT ALL! This has always been my philosophy. I am eating more now than I was at my heaviest AND I am losing weight. I am handling stress a lot better, enjoying life, and I’ve never been this happy. Just to illustrate what I mean: I went from obese class 1 to overweight WITHOUT COUNTING CALORIES and life is so good.

Where Eran Segal compared a diet of someone who gains weight from consuming 2000 and the other person loses weight while consuming 2500 notice how he didn’t include height, weight, age, gender, or activity level. Segal is full of shit someone who is 5’0″ and weighs 95lbs and lives a sedentary lifestyle will need less calories than someone like LeBron James who is 6’8″ weighs 250lbs and is a professional athlete, people like LeBron will lose weight if they ate only 2500 calories a day. PEOPLE DON’T LISTEN TO THIS IF YOU ARE TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT EREN SEGAL IS FULL OF SHIT.
You do realize that people count calories and are able to predict their exact rate of weight loss or gain based on the amount they eat, right? You really aren’t very bright, are you? Do you realize that you argue that a strong insulin response causes people to drop dead? Or is that beyond the scope of your “science”? You are trying to mystify a topic that is already solved.
Don’t you mean if you take in less calories than your body needs in a day. your body will start burning or using stored fat that was on your body for energy. Well, After your body finished using up the calories from the food you ate, over an amount of time.

This worries me. I lost 30lbs eating exactly what i already have been just by eating less. I didn’t drastically change my diet because it doesn’t make sense. You cant eat like that forever. Plus i wouldn’t want to (I’m 5’11, 180lbs)
Altetnate day fasting works great for me. No calorie cou ting necessary. No exercise necessary either.
It seems like you would be starving if you only ate 1400 calories and burned 2100 calories. I would eat 1500-1600 calories and workout for 20 minutes 3 or 4 times a week. I eat mainly vegan so high fiber foods that keep me full.
You should educate yourself better on Keto…please consult doctors who are more educated on the subject.
What if it’s calories in and out plus hormones?? Why can’t you eat the same amount of calories in an 8 hour window as you would a whole day? I have found that when I intermittent fast I lose weight better.
Counting calories isn’t sustainable long term. Cavemen didn’t count calories.
I honestly feel like this kind of thing makes it harder for people to get to grips with their nutrition. If you expend more than you consume, while maintaining the same levels of activity, you will lose weight. You can’t just magically gain energy from nowhere, regardless of your insulin levels. Can better controlling your insulin levels though your diet aid the wight loss process? Absolutely. But that is secondary to reducing your consumption. Bottom line is that you cannot get something from nothing. There are people in this comments section thinking they’re literal perpetual motion machines.

Fasting LITERALLY puts you at a caloric deficit, but ALSO keeps your insulin levels low which allows you to burn fat easier and faster. Counting calories work, but it’s like a steam engine and fasting is like a gasoline engine.

It all comes back. Keto is the only way to go. I am satisfied and not hungry. Add intermittent fasting and even more weight comes off. I don’t count calories. Got off my meds and diseases are disappearing. All my friends on weight watchers have had their weight come back. How many people on biggest losers have kept their weight off?

I needed this! I started my journey about 2 and a half weeks ago. I started tracking my calories and felt bad everytime I think I will go over so I ended up eating a lot less than I normally would. It’s the only way that works. 10 years ago I lost 160 pounds by counting calories and exercising. I’ve kept it off to this day. I didn’t gain it overnight and didn’t expect to lose it overnight. It took a year and a half of steady work.

Did two takes of this video and somehow my fat recommendations didn’t make this cut. As always recommended, healthy fats are essential to a balanced nutrition plan. One of the biggest mistakes I made earlier in my youth (as I stated in a video on the topic) was following a no-fat diet. Now, I am sure to include them in every meal. In the example provided, you want to either cook with them (pasta in a cracked red pepper and olive oil red sauce) or add them directly (sweet potato mash with added butter). If fibrous carbs were spinach for instance, I would never eat them raw. I’d instead sautée with garlic and oil and mushrooms for more flavor. Remember, if it’s not tasty you won’t eat it long term. This defeats the purpose of establishing a game plan for PERMANENT healthy eating! I’ll publish the unseen footage on my instagram @athleanx for those interested in watching!

I feel that after my 30th i’m in my 32nd year it is so much harder to have gains as it used to be and i know that with aging it gets harder and you got to be dedicated day and night if you wanna look like a beast and focus your eating on protein as much as you can afford but eat like a beast but train all day. um im sorry but calories are still extremely important to track, especially for some people who have a very hard time losing weight REGARDLESS of if you’re eating healthy food OR junk food. for example: if you’re eating 3000 calories worth of very healthy food (veggies, fruits, meats, fish, and you’re getting all your healthy nutrients… ) but your body only BURNS 2000 calories per day YOU WILL STILL GAIN WEIGHT because that is a surplus of an extra 1000 calories per day that your body was not able to burn. so no… you should not just completely ignore how many calories you’re consuming JUST because you’re eating healthy food. obviously the calories from a brownie vs a vegetable are completely different, but people aren’t just eating vegetables all day fkn long unless you’re a vegetarian. they’re eating lots of other healthy things as well.
Hey Georgie, I’m just really curious what you recommend for people to lose weight if you do not agree with counting calories? every Pt I have been to has told me to and it has worked as really losing weight is burning more calories than calorie consumption in saying that every time I have done it I still choose the better option of foods e.g the sweet potato over normal potato which is what your saying to focus on the food but if we eat more than what we burn there will be no weight loss

Basically his message is all calories are not the same. Yes there are empty calories like sugar etc which serve no purpose other than make you fat and wrinkled and then there’s healthy calories which everyone should have. And his study he mentioned failed to inform everyone here that yes the person reduced their energy levels by 30% but if you hang in there you start feeling energized after the initial tiredness when you start counting calories

This is SO timely! My sister was just telling me not to count calories LAST NIGHT!; I’d been watching a lot of my fitness gurus and that’s all they’ve been preaching for months, so I was super conflicted.
I lost 60lbs a few years ago (and gained it all back slowly over the next 2), but I never counted a single calorie. My issue was that I didn’t have a well rounded training plan, which I do now based on my personal goals:)

Where are the studies that support your concepts? Of course, you’re holding right information about metabolism, as the gut flora, insulin but those concepts are’nt enough to support the idea that we actually gain or lose weight becouse bacterial flora; or becouse different normal levels of insuline (unless you someone have diabetes), they can perfectly being not stadistically significative to explain the relation between weight gain and those features, instead calories intake still have more supportive background explaining weight gaining becouse at the end they explains the final storage of energy mainly as fat, no matter how they were metabolised.

Did a low carb diet when I was boxing to get down to 165 lbs (I’m 6’1″). Technically, the diet was successful but the more weight I dropped the less energy I had when sparring, so I started getting beat up pretty good. I guess what I’m saying is…CARBS GOOD.

CICO absolutely works! I’m 58 and post menopausal and using CICO and MyFitnessPal, and an hour of gentle cardio each day I’ve painlessly taken off 10 pounds in a month. The long term benefit of using CICO is retraining yourself what and how much to eat. Just had knee replacement so I’m still eating my 4 300 calorie meals and a snack, and don’t expect to lose anything while I recover, but as soon as I can do weights and cardio again I’m all in! I feel like Dorothy when the good witch told her she had the ability to go home all along!13 pounds down…27 more to go!

And this is why you being a doctor means absolutely dogshit, you can’t be breaking the laws of thermodynamics, that is not how the human body works nor how energy conservation works, diets aren’t the key, sustainable (relatively healthy) lifestyle/diet, diet adherence and consistency, counting calories, protein intake, cardio, resistance training, these are the basic habits of maintaining a healthy sustainable lifestyle, according to your goals. You can not hack fat loss or metabolism.

Regardless of what you eat, weight gain is caused by a CALORIC SURPLUS and weight loss is achieved by a CALORIC DEFICIT. There is no debate with this, it’s a fact. You cannot break the 1st law of thermodynamics by fasting or doing an elimination diet.

yes exercise and overall quality of your food is absolutely important..
but if you are trying to lose weight, and stay in a caloric deficit overtime you WILL lose weight.
if you were sedentary before you lowered your calories, and stayed sedentary while cutting calories (say you were eating 3000 per day and then went to 2000/day) you would lose weight overtime, but eventually if nothing else changes your weight loss will slow, without adding in more physical activity for example.
bottom line, check out a weight loss calorie counter online to help determine your goals. increasing activity levels, meet your caloric goals for weight loss daily, learning healthy whole food options to meet those caloric goals…

LOL counting calories in general is the best way to lose weight, because people don’t realise how much they eat. With me, that’s the MAIN thing. Like, I eat a lot. A lot a lot. So, I can eat only healthy foods all week, and I’ll still gain, because I’m simply eating too much. So I have to count calories. And it still works. I mean, sure, it also matter what kind of calories you eat; 500 calories worth of yogurt and veggies or something isn’t the same as 500 calories of McDonalds.. but you”ve gotta do both: eat healthy AND count calories (if you want to lose weight that is).
Creating your own personalised point system is brilliant. I used a point tracker app for a bit that in theory worked great but in practice did not because it seemed to be making judgments on the foods I was choose on top of promoting unhealthy choices (eg. rewarding you for choosing low-fat dairy or salad dressings). I’ve switched to calorie counting and that is absolutely not helping because I’ll choose the corn crackers with hummus over the apple for the same calories all the time. I have about 99% of my portion sizes down and have figured out the rough number of calories I need per meal and how they should be broken down by macro. Just haven’t cracked the simple way to track all of that and to easy make tweaks to my standard meals. I think I’m going to spend some time this week working out my own point system. Ridiculous. I’m losing weight by counting calories. We need guidelines when trying to drop pounds and calorie-counting helps you know when to stop eating. The trick is not to go too low in calories. I consume between 1200 and 1700 calories a day, eating what I want but concentrating on incorporating healthy foods. I do have a treat every day. In order to lose weight you must lower your calories. I like counting calories, actually.
I needed to hear this— again. I lost a bunch of weight several years ago by eating 1200 calories and working out with strength training and running every day. I’m 5’2″. 1200 is not adequate if I were in a coma, let alone for as active as I was. After I stopped losing weight, and slowly started to GAIN it on 1200 calories when I lost all the energy to keep up that level of activity, I stopped counting calories. And I craved sugary foods like crazy! I was insatiable! I tried again to count calories several months ago and everything about it felt wrong. I’m vegan, mostly whole foods, and I started to prioritize sleep. Instead of the crazy workouts, I’m walking every day, with 3-4 workouts during the week. Already I’m feeling better and have more energy, and I’m not crashing after workouts. It’s so hard to break the calorie counting mentality, since everyone screams in your face “CALORIES IN CALORIES OUT!” whenever you try to lose weight, and treat you like you’re just making excuses when you say you’re not going to count calories.
This video is such click bait. I lost 23 pounds in 4 months since I started counting calories. I eat healthier, but calorie counting also allows me to splurge on my favorite foods every once in a while. I think you are setting yourself up for failure when you take on a diet that completely cuts out the things you crave.
A lot of the comments are criticising this method and saying how they “don’t see the point” since it’s the same as counting calories. It’s similar to counting calories but it’s NOT the same. You’re dividing each food into 100 cal portions and, yes, you do need to know its (the food’s) calories for this method to work out. However, some foods have very specific number of cal, for example 493 cal. If you round it to 100, basically 493 ‘becomes’ 500 cal. By doing this method you won’t stress yourself out by remembering the total number of calories (for example 493 + 712 + 265). To be counting so specifically is bad for your mind and body. The more you do this method, the easier it gets but I guess it’s different for everyone
The problem it is very hard to constantly count calories and weigh and measure your food. Very few people can do this for their entire lives. If you eat foods that are not calorie dense, 500 calorie per pound or less, you can eat until comfortably full, without over eating calories. This means fill your plate with unprocessed green and yellow vegetables, starchy vegetables (potatoes, quinoa, rice), and fruit. The unprocessed fibre and water in these foods are what make you feel full without having to count calories, and you won’t exceed your calorie requirement for the day.

Good & bad thing bout Tech Insider is that they give different view points on this topic BUT counting calories is not always about being “100%” accurate but rather estimate on your macros more then actual calories(which marcos add up to calories). Scientific literature strongly shows that amount of calories ate do matter & you can try to estimate to help reach goals. Athlete’s do this & keep trying to lose weight/even gain count/try to track calories.
This needed to be said! Billions of diets on the internet, they never take into account the individuality of a person, their metabolism and everything he stated. I’m not falling for ANY of these diets anymore, what works for one person doesn’t mean it works for the next. It is total chaos and confusion. Way too much information out there!

Ok I get it, basically round all calories in food to 100 kcal of everything your eat. that away you you’ll know you can get 4 points or 400 kcal per meal. 100 calories in apples 100 calories in chicken 100 calories worth for each of the items your eating keeping in mind measurements weather you’re using cup sizes or weighting the food.
I myself started out my journey counting calories which for me became obsessive, and stressful. What works for me now is fasting for atleast 14 hours, and having two meals eating Whole Foods keto style diet. I’ve regained my hunger cues, and feel free.
If you can think of an easier solution let me know, cause calorie counting with an app is about as easy as it gets.

I’ve started a diet since Monday coz it’s my 16th birthday on March 1 (2 days) and I’ve only been eating about 500-600 calories a day..I eat:
Morningbanana and a teaspoon of peanut butter
Lunch: nothing but after school I have a spinach and water smoothie
Dinner: Salad and meat (mostly tuna) or lentils (this salad bowl is just less than 200 cal

There are some indie films out there proving that you can lose weight even with a McDonalds diet, not that it’s healthy but if you eat less than you burn you will lose weight so I smell BS here.

Intermittent fasting, no refined sugar and flour products, as much fat as you want, weight training, walking and running is the answer. Never count calories.
Like others that lost weight counting calories, I too lost weight by simply eating an 1,800 calories daily diet in fact I lost 100 lbs (of fat) over the course of one year.
To answer others about keeping it off, yes I maintained my new weight in part due to the slowness of the fat loss. I say fat loss because I was discriminately losing fat and not general weight. A twilight zone episode feature a person who wanted to lose weight so badly they wished for it the best morning they woke up to find their arms were missing! But I digress.
In this video, Segal says there is some truth to counting calories I agree. I believe what he is doing here is somewhat splitting hairs because he is saying you cannot rely on it, not don’t do it at all. And to some degree that is true. If you eat 1,800 calories of M&M’s you won’t be too healthy for too long, but if you eat 2,500 calories of lean meats, assorted vegetables, and complex carbohydrates, your body will operate at a higher level of performance than being in a caloric deficit.

You should start counting calories! But be smart about it. Calculate an average of what you usually eat over like a week in calories. Subtract 300 or 400 calories and eat healthy.

I lost 60lbs by counting calories I ate whatever I want I just made sure to stay below 1800 calories. I logged everything in the Fitbit app I would make sure it read that I burned at least 3500 calories also I excersised at least 5 times a week sometimes 7 times a week.
I think people should learn how to count calories and macros before doing this method. You can jam a lot of garbage into those same portions.
I’ve lost 25 lbs on Weight Watchers Freestyle Program. WW does not count calories from every type of food. You can have as much lean protein, fruits and veggies as you want.

What if your still undereating without calorie counting, or vice versa like say Someone is eating too many calories but they’re eating “non processed” Whole Foods (or a generally healthy diet) does your body end up gaining weight then? Also if I stop counting calories I’ll feel bad and eat less anyway so I don’t know how that would play out.

I strained so much to not gain weight, which did creep back up a bit. Now that I’m more mentally healthy in regards to food, I’m just trying to wake up my metabolism again and have a balance. Hopeful your methods will help.

To all yeah counting calories can help you to lose weight but a reminder to all you cant count calories forever and it stresses you out. So if you reach your goal try to stop count calories and eat in moderation so it will leads you to a happier life no worries at all. Enjoy food but in moderation
Idk if counting calories work or not. But when I started to count calories, I realised what I ate and started to eat healthier, so that way, it did certainly work

Somewhere along the way, some whacked-out dieting guru or doctor wrote a book explaining how insulin was a storage hormone, and since it was a storage hormone it was responsible for the obesity epidemic:
“When you eat carbohydrates, your body secretes insulin. Insulin then stores those carbs as fat in the body. So if you cut out any and all forms of carbohydrates, then you won’t be releasing insulin and you’ll stop storing body fat. Once you stop eating carbs, your body will start using that fat for fuel. This will transform you from a great big ol’ fattie into a sexy fat burning machine.”
Usually there’s also something in there about how eating fat makes you burn fat too.
Here’s the issue. It’s a gross oversimplification, and it’s cherry picking the whole physiological process.
The best metaphor about insulin is that it’s a traffic cop. It tells the nutrients you’ve eaten where to go. When you eat a meal it gets broken down into the basic nutrient components. Proteins are broken down into amino acids, fats are broken down into fatty acids, and carbs are broken down into glucose.
The pancreas then secretes insulin so that these nutrients are transported into cells for storage or use. This happens every time you eat something. While insulin is directing nutrients into the cells, the fat burning mechanism gets turned off. Once insulin is done doing its job, though, fat burning can resume (assuming you’re in a caloric deficit and are using stored fat or glucose for energy).
That’s it. Yeah, yeah, there are issues about insulin sensitivity and all that, but generally speaking, eat fewer calories than you burn each day and repeat that for long enough and you’ll get leaner. But eat more calories than you burn each day, and your body will store more and more fat for “later use.”
Unless you don’t use it later. Or ever. Which is why you’re fat and you can’t blame insulin for making you that way. Nope. It’s the excess calories. Tough love is tough, but you can’t beat facts.
If you manipulate your hormones by food that you eat doesn`t mean you will not get fat if you are in a caloric surplas.
For the majority is easier to lose weight just by eating low calorie dense food 3 to 4 times a day because of the feeling of fullnes.
Ketogenic diet pushed me into a Multiple Sclerosis flare that lasted a year. Never ever again!! Weight loss was not worth it!!
I see what he is saying but there are multiple ways to keep from your body slowing down. 1.Yes, eat healthier foods! Dont just drastically cut the calories.
2. Have a very small snack every few hours to keep from going into starvation mode (I do a cube of cheese, small slice of meat or a veggie. 3. Drink lots of water to keep your stomach full. 4. Zig zag your calorie count. Don’t just keep your diet at (using my appropriate amount of calories) 1,400. Do about 1,900 for two days and 1,400 for 2. That way your body doesn’t adjust to 1,400 and you plateau.
Right. That is why the prisoners in the concentration camps in WWII gained so much weight, because they often had only bread to eat. What is wrong with this woman?
My problem is trying to make sure I get enough calories. My perfect diet would be eating once every 4 days, but that doesn’t work and sounds insane to though who are hungry every few hours. I don’t eat sugar or many carbs (most carbs just from vegetables). I have no appetite. Never have, but since my husband died, really have no appetite at all.

ive tried literally every eating style the most restrictive and healthy diets imaginable and if i dont consciously reduce my calories i still gain weight, youre wrong.
That being said, i was only able to truly sustain calorie counting when i did it with a no oil higher carb moderate fat and protein mostly plant based diet because otherwise my body started to feel bad probably from glucose and other vitamin deficiency when i would calorie count on other eating styles.

How is counting calories not sustainable long term? It will lead to weight loss due to the fact you can actually put a number to what you are eating. Well unless you have a scientist living with you that can determine what kind of food your gut bacteria likes, then I suggest counting your calories, once you get the hang of it and memorize the average calorie count of most foods its actually pretty easy and fail safe for weight loss. These doctors and groups that make money off endorsing diet products are full of shit. I have suffered from chronic fatigue, a messed up metabolism, and adrenal issues most of my adult life. I definitely attribute this to years/decades of calorie counting, a restrictive diet and over exercising. It was the battle of the bulge. Being brainwashed into thinking calories in calories out = ideal weight. My metabolism is jacked, I sleep all the time. Seriously, 10 to 12 hours a day. I have seen so many doctors and they try to help by putting band-aids on these problems. And, even though I try, really try, I rarely have the energy to exercise properly. Since, I have changed my way of thinking, and started a clean ketogenic diet, my body has just started to heal itself. Healthy fats + proteins + micro nutrients = a happy, healthy life! NAIL ON THE HEAD GIRL! keep doing what you do!

can you make a video on how to recover from counting calories? I’m 15 and I went on a calorie diet, lost weight and freaked out bc I realized my metabolism slowed. I’m now at the same weight eating 1800 calories a day (I don’t work out) but it feels restricting and I want to get off of it without gaining weight
Such a misleading title counting calories doesn’t slow your metabolism or halt weight loss. This is simply your body’s adaption from reduced energy intake, otherwise… if you kept losing the same amount of weight every month you would be dead in a matter of time. You would wither away into nothing. Also the insulin hypothesis is incorrect. If I were to give you 200 calories of sugar every day and that’s all you would eat, you would lose weight, what happens to your insulin is irrelevant. As an extreme example, look at POWs, these guys are fed very little bread or potatoes and are forced to work extreme hours. Your insulin hypothesis would suggest they shouldn’t lose any weight, cause you know, it’s a storage hormone…. ultimately if you burn more than what ever you consume, you will lose weight
I’m so sick of my lifestyle I count calories in literally everything I’m always stressed I really hope that I can change, a year ago I was eating 400 calories a day or even less and I lost 10 kg and I’ve gained all the weight back and more now I’m getting obsessed with counting calories again and I know that the same thing is going happen again it’s just a never ending cycle

Dr. I was on SAD my highest weight was 226 lbs then after Clean keto (no dairy no nuts)
I went down to 127 lbs.
I unfortunately had a terrible accident that made me had a horrible flare up of my spondylolisthesis, couldn’t walk etc. So I learned that Carnivore diet could help me heal faster. IT DID!!
Unfortunately with the vasts steroids medication of course I gained weight to 152 lbs. I am 5′ 6″ 47 y female postmenopausal.
But after 3 months of Carnivore
(Only Animal Protein and Fats, no dairy no nuts, no carbs whatsoever only from eggs). I was off completely of ALL MEDICATIONS.
I’m Carnivore for about 1 year now not restricting calories on the contrary eating till satisfied (1 1/2 2 1/2 lbs of meat a day) in 3 meals. This so I could heal hormones, metabolism, eating disorders (ex binger), depression, neuropathy pain, constipation, high blood pressure, cholesterol, sleep disorder, etc. AND IT DID!!!
Not only that but my true hunger levels!!
So I felt confident to try some EF (Extended fasting) Once a WK of 46 hr with homemade electrolytes, then refeed with carnivore meal (14 oz beef w organs and tallow or butter) then OMAD’S like 3 times a week, the rest my usual 2 meals a day. I dropped from 152 to 142 in 1 week without restricting calories,
keep in mind I was in ketosis to begin with so no “water weight loss there”. I feel really amazing, definitely body composition has really changed.
I am jogging now (fartlek) only 3 miles. Plus Stability, Flexibility, Resistance and Functional and Weight Training. Not every day.

Youre overcomplicafing stuff, its more calories out than calories in if you want to loose weight, and more calories in than calories out if you want to gain weight.
But everyone has a diffirent metabolism, so i suggest using an online Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) calculator and if youre unsure how many calories youre taking per day use a calorie counting app like MyFitnessPal or something similar to that.
This (calorie counting bussiness) worked for me to loose majority of the fat i didnt want (AKA cutting) and now its working for me to build muslce (AKA bulking), so it should 99.876% work for you too.

absorption and gut bacteria affect only one thing: how much energy will be “extracted” from food. so yeah, in the end, you still simply have to eat less.

Whatever, I lost 90lbs and have kept it off for over 8 years simply by cutting calories and EXPECTING TO BE HUNGRY/CRANKY/ETC.. this shit is NOT comfortable, so suck it up butter cup and quit looking for easy ways out.
I used to count calories, but now I just eat reasonable portions and healthy food. I’m alright if i do that. I make sure to listen to my body. It can take a bit of time to understand what your body is telling you. I make sure my macros aren’t imbalanced. I keep a good eye on those. I’ve been losing weight since I started keeping my protein and carbs more balanced. I’ve also stopped eating out after work. I work two days a week. I am also better about drinking enough water.
i feel like since i’ve stopped counting calories i focus more on the quality of the food hehe

You keep track of calories (calories in/out) for the same reason why you should keep track of what you spend (money in/out). If you are physically healthy, I don’t understand why you are are not financially healthy. Same concept.

One of the most misleading statements about keto diets is that calories don’t matter as long as you’re not consuming carbs.
This stems from the insulin to obesity theory and it goes something like this:
1.Carbs cause insulin to be secreted.
2.Insulin (the storage hormone) stores those carbs as fat.
3.Eliminate carbs and you’ll stop storing fat regardless of calories consumed.
4.Become a fat burning machine.
It’s true that getting into a state of ketosis will increase fat oxidation. After all, fats and carbs are the main fuels used in the muscles for oxidation during exercise. If you eliminate carbs, then eventually the body is left with no choice but to use fat as the primary source for fuel. Boom! Increased fat oxidation, right?
But there’s a difference in fat oxidation and a reduction in fat mass, which can only happen in an energy deficit. And if you’re consuming an excess of calories from fat, then the body will do the same thing with those excess calories from fat as it does with carbs: it’ll store them for later use.
The reason that a ketogenic diet works well for some people is that it can increase satiation – the feeling of fullness. This higher degree of satiation can naturally cause some to eat fewer calories, which leads to fat loss despite the fact that they may not be counting calories.
The ketogenic diet will work for fat loss in the same way that every other diet works for fat loss – by creating an energy deficit. You cannot eat as much as you want on a keto diet and still lose fat simply because you eliminated a macronutrient source.
People love to hear: “You can eat as much of X and Y as you want, as long as you don’t eat Z and you will lose fat”
Eating two combined macronutrients without the third can’t break the law of thermodynamics.

You are all going to gain the weight back if you did indeed lose weight counting calories (a lot of these comments are from momths ago, so many of you for sure have started gaining back) futhermore, successful weight lose is weight lose that has been maintained for 3+ years. Just do the research, I do not know much about the diet world. However, I do know that counting calories FAILS over the long term. Lastly don’t anyone tell me that you have maintained weight lose or know someone who has maintained weight loss by restricting calories, BECAUSE ITS NOT TRUE.

If you want to gain weight than get more calories in than calories out, or In ‘N’ Out everyday.
The thumbnail promoting or insinuating that eating only 1400 calories in a day is healthy or ideal is really dangerous and does bother me a lot. This is only sustainable short term and is NOT enough energy to sustain your body. Most body types will require around 1500-1800 just to function for a day (before any kind of activity or exercise). I watched this video through hoping she’d correct this but then she even drops in that you can eat 1200 to lose weight. So damaging to young viewers.

I wish I had locate the “Yamzoko Weebly” (Google it) a long time ago. I burned 12 lbs in 3 weeks up to now. There is certainly still need of physical exercises even just a couple of times a week as well as the foodstuff to have should be best. The outcome presented to me is astounding. Undoubtedly, this is strongly recommended and I do wish this would give good results to you too because it did to me..

Facts! Iv lost 70lbs doing the same thing 240lbs to 170lb. And no it doesn’t happen over night. This took me 2 years. I eat about 300 hundred calorie deficit but walk 1 hour a day to get me a total of 500 calorie deficit. The biggest tip I can give to others trying to lose weight is to WEIGH your food. Look at the nutrition label and see how many grams is in 1 serving of that food. Most people who eyeball their food end up eating more calories than they think which will slow down your weight loss. If you’re thinking you’re in a 500 calorie deficit but actually only in a 200 calorie deficit you’ll think counting calories doesn’t work. Remember don’t forget to track sneaky calories like oils and sauces. Don’t drink your calories, eat them you’ll be more full. I promise you this works.

When I tried it, I was constantly light headed;
I couldn’t concentrate long on anything;
And, I had heightened levels of stress.
The problem with this argument is… counting calories does work, just go on Reddit on r/progresspics and see for yourself, so many people lose significant amounts of weight (including me 290lbs to 185lbs) just by counting calories, the food I ate hardly changed I just ate less of it.
So as I say, it’s all well and good to say it doesn’t work, but your studies don’t mean much when in the real world people are losing weight by counting calories.
If you ate 3,000 calories worth of kale per day you would gain weight, it’s as simple as that. Just look at herbivore animals who get fat eating vegetables before hibernation.
