Counting calories is not a bad thing. It isn’t 100% accurate but it gives you an idea of what you are putting in your body. At the end of the day, food is fuel for the body not pleasure for the mind. People seem to think food is for pleasure, what you put in your body is what you get.

Looking forward to seeing more videos!!! All the best and good luck with growing your channel. Did you know that you could use followsm. c o m??? You could use it to promote your videos.
Complete nonsense. Where is your proof? All I heard is a bunch of non sequiturs.
Calories do matter and you are just trying to be rebellious and different.
Wow, you are so good at your profession! Thanks for the great videos!
I eat what I want, just counting calories (2000 calories a day) and exercising. And I’m losing weight. I don’t want to quit all the foods I love. A diet isn’t good for me (I tried many times). This is the first time, it’s working and I’m sticking to it. I’m losing weight slowly, but steadily. No better way to go about it:).
I eat pretty simple, lots of meat, eggs and a few low carb foods. I don’t do anything fancy, so i find it easier to add up at the end of the day.
This video couldn’t be further from the truth… I’ve always counted calories and I can control my weight in every aspect
I’m currently doing Intermittent fasting and keto. I do Intermittent whenever I feel like doing, it’s not strict. After changing my lifestyle, I immediately dropped 20 lbs and I feel less hungry. I learned to control myself. I’m even refusing tasty fastfood and junk foods whenever I go out or hang out with my friends because I always feel full and satiated.
Just wonderful Dr Berry. This is one of the best videos I have seen in a long time. Thank you so much. Calorie counting is just BS on so many levels.
If I don’t lose 10 pounds by end of August I have to give up
Did any of you even watch the video? lol I know he’s trying to advertise his product but like… Watch the damn video before y’all jump to conclusions, god damn.
me and thousands of other people who have lost weight counting calories: bruh.
Um… I lost 47lbs. With calorie counting and feel amazing, that was also over a year ago and I’ve gained no weight back since. Perfect diet if you you stick with it.
Hello, I lost about 5 kg in 2 weeks, but i dont see any small changes in my body, I lost 2 % of fat and also gained about 2% muscle weight, but i dont feel any different
At least it makes more sense listening to established medical experts with no impressive physiques then self-established juiced-up fitness freaks! Thanks Dr!
Hogwash. Counting calories is the only way I lose weight. Now it is important to get enough nutrients within your calorie count. I eat around 1400 calories a day and that works for me.
I was very skinny and after changing my diet I finally started seeing results. I didn’t know anything about training and diet, but my friend told me for the website called NextLevelDiet and I just followed their diet and training plan. They have amazing tips 😉 check it out
Dr. I had a gastric sleeve am one year post op. Heaviest:240. Now 170lb This last 3 months i cant lose a lb.. I work out 5 days a week..pouch not stretched… Good macros and protein…why cant i lose the last 15-20lbs.
I eat less, work out more, never snack…
You might say keto and intermenting fasting are better for being not hungry but no one is going to stick to them. Just eat low calorie dense foods so you can eat a lot without getting fat
The second question helped for me kati as in you awnsering it as I get so angry when people tell me I look healthier or better as I take as people saying that I have put on weight which to me is a bad thing! Thankyou kati your amazing and I love your videos!
I’ve been following you for a while now and there’s a (off-topic) question I just have to ask now. What is that thing on the wall behind you?? Maybe I’m weird but I just can’t figure it out, haha!
The answer to the last question has made my day. I’m currently 26 and have only just seemed help despite having mental health issues all my life. I also don’t even remember before I was 14. So I struggle constantly with feeling like I’ve “lost” so much of my life. Thank you for giving me a new way to see it.:)
Something interesting to watch for calorie counters. Some of the studies mentioned in this video give much weight to Dr Weiner’s proposed eating program.
Nuts and Obesity: The Weight of Evidence
People try not to comment on my appearance, but sometimes my parents can’t help but tell me I look healthy or I look like I’m not eating enough. My boyfriend has no idea how to interact with me during relapses so he tells me I’m too skinny a lot, it’s not his fault or anyone else who makes comments but sometimes people don’t have the restraint to keep their mouths shut.
The intention of this video was to encourage a perspective shift on calories in a succinct package. I still see a lot of arguments like “Keto/Low Carb is a fad, it’s all about simple thermodynamics” floating around. ( https://bit.ly/2ISDNDl ) This brief historical point of “what was measured first” has stood out to me for a while, and I thought it could be an interesting tidbit for many people. Maybe if radioimmunoassay was invented much earlier we’d be saying “It’s all about simple endocrinology” then again, endocrinology isn’t simple…
Hey Kati my school are having this thing on the last day of school were we go back to registration for the last hour on the last day my tutor has organised a thing were we bring in food this is scaring me because I think people with judge me for not eating but if I do eat I won’t feel happy I am trying to recover for my ED but I am building up to eating normally again
Knowledge is power…tanks alot for making this great effort to educate us Dr Berry!!!
Idk I’ve been eating less but also cut carbs more, and feel less hungry doing the same amount of excercise. Not doing fasting just eating less
You CANNOT ignore calories, if you body burns, say 2500 cal a day and you eat 3000 a day those extra cals go to fat, period. I am a bodybuilder and can tell you that when a competitive bodybuilder is on last month of diet he goes on a keto diet but also eats a lot less calories to get that last bit of fat off. Of course if you are just fat looking to lose a few lbs keto will help because normally you don’t as much, less calories again but to get shredded you really need to pull back on those cals. You are not a bodybuilder and don’t have a clue to get ripped. Stop spreading untruths to the people foolish enough to think you know what you are talking about even though you are a country doctor.
Can you do a follow up video on Reverse Dieting? Increasing your metabolism by slowly increasing your calories.. Or whatever
Drink water like a camel? Dude they can go months without drinking, that’s why they have humps really hope that was a joke
Is 1st law thermodynamics still the bottom line? Energy in vs Energy out is it still matter? Can anyone tell me. So many information i so lost.
So if you cut down 3500 calories a week = you’ll lose 1 pound. So if 200 pound someone does this for 200 weeks they will weigh 0? Of course not. Your body adjusts ASAP. The only way to lose weight is to reduce insulin spikes in your body, that’s possible through fasting and by not eating carbs.
I’m done I’m so fucking done like really! I’m so done with trying it always leads me at the very beginning point WHY AM I HERE!!!!!
You still need to count cals to lose weight on keto. You can’t eat 5000 cals a day and not gain weight. Pro bodybuilders on their last few weeks of prep on keto diet still keep low cals
Let me summon coach greg for a seconGreg: YOU MOROOOOOOOONSSS I HAVE A MASTERS IN KINESIOLOGY IT’S CALORIES IN CALORIES OUT YOU CAN’T BEAT THERMO DYNAMICS WITH YOUR HORMONES YOU FREAKING IDIOTS
welll, there are many studies that reveal that high carb diets do that. Thing is, when a person is overweight, they need to work of keeping it off. Its about a change in lifestyle. No other way bob
You can’t break the laws of thermal dynamics = you still have to count calories… you’re just saying that body composition and hunger depend on macro and micro nutrient balances?
I don’t want to do keto anymore I felt hungry as well cutting all my carbs made me anxious I did keto for 3 months and was horrible for me
What if I told you you are advocating for a low calorie diet…. please tell me what foods I can eat to change my hormones so I can eat 3000 calories a day and still loose weight.
They lost 100lb-200lb. Do you expect more leptin in the blood system??
How are carbs dangerous when people are being cured of type two diabetes with a starch based diet??
Another danger of this calories in calories out myth is that people think that they can routinely eat high sugar wheat treats as long as they keep it within 2000 calories, and that they can snack throughout the day as long as they keep it within 2000 calories, when both of those things are causing serious hormonal issues that are keeping them from getting healthy and losing weight.
The days I have been counting, I’m eating about 500-600 a day. People tell me I’m starving myself but I’m not hungry. Most days my husband finishes my plate. Is it safe to eat that many? I’d really love to stop worrying about them.
hi thank you for your work, can you please enabled community contributions for this video, so we can translate it
What I tell people is you want to see about how many calories you eat in a day keep track of all the grams of fat and carbs and protein you eat in a day and then use the 6-6-9 method. Protein and carbs are 6. Fats are 9. But that just satisfies the learning we got decades ago.
One day people will see how ‘ahead of its time’ this video was if that makes sense. Changing the calorie expenditure mindset will take a long time
Counting calories helped me lose 87lbs. I have plenty of energy and I’m not hungry all the time. I’m actually less hungry now then I was before I started eating better and counting calories.
i ate 1 meal a day for 4 months and lost almost 50 lbs and normalized my high blood sugar. Insulin can keep you fat.
this channel seems like an ad for keto diets the more videos I watch. not saying i don’t like the videos or anything but I usually only hear that one option being mentioned in videos pertaining to weight loss.

Doctors told me to cut calories for 20 years, since I was 11. Nothing worked. I figured out by myself, through Intermittent Fasting, that it has been an insulin resistance problem all along. Despite all of them knowing I suffer from POCS, nobody told me anything. After two years of IF I lost 40kg/80lbs. Got recently into keto to lose the last 15kg/30lbs.
1st Law of Thermodynamics “Energy can not be created or destroyed, it can be changed from one form to another, so in a CLOSED system it is constant. Humans do not operate CLOSED systems we can excrete energy [ketones] through breathing, sweating and peeing, that is why it doesn’t apply to CICO!
Physicists don’t cite CICO as an example of 1st law of thermodynamics! I’ll stick with Biology and hormones, no calorie deficit 65lbs lost -insulin under control!
Weight Watchers is headed towards low carb now anyway, just goes to show what keto is doing for our lives. I was a WW member and have failed miserably, plus it caused me to have an unhealthy obsession with food. Keto has changed everything for me. I never stress, I feel amazing, and actually feel a freedom that WW has never given me.
Break the chains that these diet industries cause us to to have!!!!
We count calories because the laws of thermodynamics arent fake news. If people are lazy and do it in a stupid way, its their fault. It doesn’t mean the laws of physics dont apply anymore. Period. Calories in vs calories out is the only way to lose or gain fat or muscle. How you do it can set you up for failure or success.
Edit* seriously, I can’t believe people try to make an argument against the laws of physics in 2019
Counting calories is dumb. What you need to do is to count how many proteins, fat, can carbs you need for your desired lifestyle.
Want to eat pizza everyday? Yes, you can! Just do strength training every morning and cycle 20 km every afternoon.
It has to be a combination of Sport and calories reduceing like 25 g every 8 days. And by Sport i mean 50 minutes EVERY 2 days. That Combo make you lose 3,5 Kg Every month Easy
I fast for 15-16 hours and then the rest is my feeding window where I eat 2 meal, I am basically sedentary and even though I have lose weight I still eat till I’m full and don’t gain weight. So if someone wh
Its still astonish me just how a number of people do not know about Custokebon Secrets even though lots of people with it. Thanks to my personal friend who told me about it. I’ve lost tons of fat.
People always talk about how calories in calories out is thermodynamics, and that it holds true no matter what. This implies that 2000 calories is the same no matter whether it came from Broccoli or Chocloate. Broccoli has 34 calories per 100 grams, so 2000 calories would be 5.8kg. A twinkie meanwhile is 42grams in weight and has 150 calories. This means you need 13.3 twinkies (560grams) to get to 2000 calories. So apparently, nearly 6 kg of veges has the same impact on weight as 560g of confectionery. Because, you know, thermodynamics.
Yes, counting calories does work for weight loss, and yes, it can also lead to eating disorders, I was falling down that hole myself, but before it got any deeper, i managed to save myself from that. I’m 14, going to be 15 next year in February, and just recently opened my eyes about the truth in this.
For me, personally, it’s not as much about counting calories, but about what you eat. If you’re counting calories, you’re like “Oh, I can eat this as long as I don’t pass the limit” it was like that for me, but it causes stress and eventually you fall, so no more extreme diets like those. Instead, making sure what you eat, starting out by trying healthier foods, and you begin to realize “Oh, I love this” and begin turning more towards healthy foods, that’s what happened to me. Now I crave healthier foods more than anything else, I’m making healthier options now without the thought that I’m on a diet and being stressed over it, but more like this is my new lifestyle, and I love it, taking better care of my body.
I hope people read this comment and take notice in it, hope it helps them realize it as well, take good care
i have trashed my habit of counting calories an di can say it messed up my mind real hard. i am now recovering from my ed
Do you still get the same benefits if you eat carbs but do intermittent fasting
I just eat 3 times a week and fast the rest. Meat cheese and fruit makes up my entire diet
Calorie in calories out works, plain and simple. Theres a reason bodybuilders and athletes follow that model successfully time and time again
im sorry but veggies don’t fill anybody up try just eating veggies for a day ull forever feel hungry. were not cows we cant eat grass and survive on it.
Have you heard about reverse dieting which is a recommended practice after excessive restrictive dieting
Weight loss is something we shouldn’t worry about, we should really think about fat loss period.
Cutting your calories only has those negative effects if you cut too low too fast. I slowly reduced my caloric intake over a period of 2 years from 2,300 to 1,700 and lost 30 pounds. The easiest way to eat less and feel full is to eat healthier foods: particularly proteins and veggies.
Interesting, but it didnt seem to explain HOW hormones affect fat loss in a way that overrides the conventional understanding of calories.
I think it’s easy to understand that junk food is an obvious explanation, but I have been sticking to a meat heavy ketogenic diet for two months and have only noticed weight loss when in a caloric deficit.
Hi. Im 14y and i have a few kg more then i should have. Should i try intermittent fasting or i shouldnt because im still growing?
I think counting calories makes someone think more about food than other things in life. Also its so linked to weight loss. So much better to focus on being healthy. I counted calories when I just began recovering from anorexia but 3 years on I rarely think about them..makes for a much calmer mind. I think counting calories can so easily become an obsession.
Intermittent fasting/ketosis are both ways to achieve a calorie deficit. Why is there the constant need to pretend they are opposing factors????? ♀️♀️♀️
Calorie counting is great if you wanna keep processed food in your diet. With a primal animal based diet, calorie counting is less of a factor because of the hormonal and hunger signals in a lot more control.
People still defending calorie counting are clearly still brainwashed. They have no clue about hormones. Our bodies communicate through hormones, not calories.
I mean, fasting still comes down to calories in vs calories out just on a different platform and scale.
I strongly believe that counting calories is unnecessary. I’ve never done it, yet only serious athletes look more fit than me. What I did do is eat according to my primal pattern diet type, organic, and go to lengths to study the health benefits and disadvantages of each food. Eating things raw, fresh and unprocessed is also a thing, for enzymes.
I use a food diary that counts macro and micronutrients of foods too to see if I develop deficiencies or excesses of any micronutrient, like selenium and iron, and get myself tested for those at least once a year.
Doc, I am wondering if you could address this topic. New studies are coming out that grains are necessary for microbiome. I don’t eat grains, but I am a bit concerned by new literature. I supplement with beta glucan. Are probiotics and prebiotics, keto friendly, enough?
I understand that compliment/insult paradox, even though I don’t have an eating disorder. Like when someone says, “You look good today”… So I normally don’t look good? lol
One thing I’m still wondering is why is being a picky eater a bad thing! For as long as I can remember I don’t eat certain foods because I hate the taste of it.
if the person who loses weight builds muscle that will increase the bmr
Do you win free loose skin reduction surgery if you win the biggest loser?
I am just a low/slow carb dieter. 50% fat, 30% protein, 20% carbs on 1800 calories. I cut down on starchy foods and eat low gi/gl foods and non-starchy fruits/vegetables.
the most accurate representation of what my brain does all day when bored comes from this video
The thing you kind of don’t mention is that the candidates from the Biggest Loser were on a MASSIVELY unhealthy diet. They lost weight WAY too quickly, faster than is healthy. A lot of them suffered from injuries from over-exercising. They basically starved themselves towards a lower weight. It’s already known that losing weight slowly is way healthier and will cause your body to freak out a lot less.
Good info. Has anyone told you you look like and sound like Kirk Cameron….I swear!
Thankyou! I struggled with weight loss all my life….joined weight watchers several times only to gain the weight back. It is hormones!
Smart and freeing ive never done calories counting but i hate the idea of doing it so Good!
Damn, imagine being able to survive longer with less calories thats the same thing as needing less sleep to survive
Hey Dr Berry! so, I don’t need to worry about protein/fat ratios? just eat burger, steak, bacon, chops, loin? Please help… I’m going crazy calculating 70% fat 25% protein and 5% carb…
I need to count calories or Im too afraid to eat. When Im cutting weight its more horrible. I under eat if I do not count calories. I also overeat to the point of obesity. Its very boring.
Although I like fasting and I do it I still have to count calories bc if it’s up to me I’d eat close to 3000 calories BUT if I count calories I’m more mindful of what I’m eating
Hi Kati!Appreciate you and your videos so much.I’m curious if you could help.I have been doing recovery (unsuccessfully) for 4/5years after an anorexia diagnosis.I’m weight restored (probably higher end of healthy bmi but I’m not sure)I’ve cycled through anorexia/bulimia/binge eating/compulsive exercise and orthorexia. I naturally lean toward restriction, sometimes for six months sometimes for two weeks but it always ends in binge eating and sometimes purging and always over exercising. HOWEVER; I have reached the point where I have quit veganism, I incorporate all food groups and my exercise is balanced, but I keep periodically binge eating. Sometimes I purge but I’m trying to not. My binge eating will last for 5-10days straight and I rarely leave bed when this happens. I realised when i am “normal” and trying to “intuitively eat” I’m barely hitting 1500cals. (I’m also 23yrs old and 5’9 and active). I’ve tried to count calories so I know I’m getting enough but feel as though it’s also counter productive as I’m way too focused on food and worry about deviating outside of planned food etc. Do you have any advice? I DO APOLOGISE FOR THE LENGTHY COMMENT!!Thanks again for all your kindness Cait x
Funny. Are you claiming that you can gain weight on a caloric deficit?
i currently recover from an eating disorder and doing a pretty good job but i want to lose weight but im scared of counting calories
4:30 so true.. and even the stupid Snickers quote “Eat a snickers..” a friend said to me last week turned in my mind into “Look at you, you’ve already gained weight, you’re not that skinny anymore, you’re lying and must eat junk anyways..” (so disappointing because she’s the person who knows about my problems and usually listens and understands)
Aw Kati…you are too lovely. This may be my favourite video you’ve done:)
People still count calories because it works. It’s that simple.
Well I drank vodka…and have stalled for a month…and it’s calories
It’s my 21st birthday on Tuesday and I just got out of the hospital on Monday and everyone in the hospital told me (droctor and nurses) that I shouldn’t drink alcohol on my birthday. What’s the big deal about drinking and and mess.
I get that hormones play a very predominant role in fat storage/loss. What is confusing to me is how does the law of conservation of energy apply to weight loss? Your body generates heat, your body can use fat to generate heat. Would that not make calories at least somewhat applicable to weight loss once the hormonal issues have been addressed?
This video really touched me today….why this one of yours in particular I don’t know, but it was just what I needed. I’m sending you a big virtual hug. Thanks so much for all you do!
You CAN lose weight counting calories!! I lost 50 pounds doing this
As an engineer, it is clear that if you burn more calories than you eat, something (fat) has to make up the difference and you lose weight.
Everything u say is so common sense if we stop n think about it…I wish u we’re my doctor dammit!
I tried keto and many other diets. Counting calories is the only one that consistently worked. Sorry but you’re flat out wrong. The trick is to figure out your BMR and then finding the sweet spot of eating lower calories than your BMR, but not too low. You have to eat like 200 calories lower than your BMR. Use MyFitness Pal app to easily count calories.
The reason why it is still believed that caloric deficit works is because it just works for the majority’s interests and no matter what anyone says. It works and people somehow get away with the lost weight besides of maintainning that new bodyweight.
I will comment and like every video to support you:)
Keep the good work up:)
Wasted youth? Yeah, we can spend a lot of time regretting the things we didn’t do or the places we might not get to. Rather than worry whether I’m going to make it to my destination, I try to recognize that it is making the journey that matters.
Canaries
Are everything when it comes to weight loss
Health..different story
This was one of your best videos!!
You have such a gift with people. And you can see the passion and care u have. Thankyou so much ur videos are amazing and so helpful xxx
I am losing weight by counting calories. Not stupid at all Doc! If it doesn’t work then why am I losing weight happily? I have about 25 pounds to go and actually like calculating calories on a daily basis. I keep the calorie level at a healthy level, between 1200 and 1700 per day. It works!
Well then let’s say I binge and 5000 cals of fat and protein. What would happen to the rest of the calories that your body didn’t burn? Are you saying this diet can defy physics?
Would you say low carb (50% fat)(30% protein)(20%carbs)is enough? The point of that diet is to reduce insulin so your body burns more fat, drops water weight, and excretes sodium.
Thankyou, I still have problems counting calories. I can’t seem to stop the habit. Have you done more videos on this?
Anyway calorie deficit is essential. Any kind of diet is nothing but to make it easier.
Hey Kati,
I always feel depressed/anxious for no apparent reason and it’s really bugging me. Is it normal? I would mention it to my councilor but she’s the type of person who always expects there to be a trigger, when half the time there isn’t. Am I doing something wrong here? And advice on this? Thanks x
Sure calories still matter, but I was never hungry on a keto diet. Many times I wouldn’t even feel hungry when it was time to eat again and if I tried to eat enough to gain weight (by chugging lard?) I would be physically ill. Where as with carbs I could easily down a 1,000-calorie pasta dish with a 500-cal dessert and be absolutely starving 2 hours later. Calories matter but if you stick to meats and veggies I think most people would never have to think about them (again, unless you like, eat mayonnaise with a spoon or something lol)
Is this guy aware that people have lost weight eating only McDonald’s everyday for 90 days or the nutritional professor who ate only twinkies and other sweets for 10 weeks and lost 30 pounds because he restricted his calories to only 1800 a day. So according to this guy I could just eat 3000 calories of the healthiest food in the world a day and not worry about gaining weight right? THAT MAKES NO SENSE. 1. Burning calories isn’t literally burning calories: No reputable person that talks about “burned” calories is literally saying our body burns the food.
2. Now he’s just explaining what a Calorie is and sidetracking about biological energy pathways in the body. The study he cites had nothing to do with caloric restriction, That site is mostly about ketogenic diets and intermittent fasting. And the fasting stuff even sites Dr. Krista Varady, who commonly notes that intermittent fasting works BECAUSE it creates a caloric deficit, albeit without literally counting calories. Calories matter whether you believe it or not my friend
So I can eat and not count calories as long as its low/no carb and still lose weight? No matter how little exercise I get? I have RA and multiple bad discs and right now need to lose a whole person weight wise. Ive been trying to count calories and do KETO. So far havent lost a pound and Im starting to worry Im gaining more = (
I’m not too sure about the details of weight watches and their calorie restriction but I am on a calorie deficit (Low carb, Low sugar) keto-like diet and have lost 16 kg so far. I was on a IF 8 hour window for a few months but didn’t lose any significant weight. Perhaps what is being eaten matters more.
Hey WIL, could you make a video on how to sleep or how to fall asleep?
I’ve been suffering from extreme insomnia for the past 25 years. I’ve combed internet for any usefull information but nothing I do seems to work.
Sooooo, if I understood this correctly, we shouldn’t COUNT calories, and instead MEASURE hormones… WHICH hormones? why those hormones? by what means can we measure them?
Is “measuring” and “counting” too different??
Or what the point of the video to show precisely WHY we count instead of measure?? Is not instructional but historical??
How can a healthy human MEASURE hormonal levels in a practical way?? And isn’t there a huge disagreement among “experts” as to what the appropriate levels ARE of the most common hormones??
Is this only for losing weight??
Is it okay to drink cold water? I started to not drink a lot because its warm, so Im wondering if its okay to drink cold water so I can drink more v-v
Im almost sure that if u workout more you can eat more to keep a balance. And 1400 sounds way too little. Does she workout?
I’ve lost 25 lbs in 7 months counting calories. I am 6′ 2″ and was 205 lbs. I am now 178. My goal is to not go over 1600 per day.
I donno, I do intermittent fasting restricting about 500 calories and it works for me, but I doubt it would work the same without the restriction part.
but why does calorie restriction seem to work for others? people who follow dr mcdougal’s principle seem to be successful in losing the excess pounds (avoid calorie-dense food).
This is allll true. I lost and kept 20 lbs off for years by avoiding white flour and processed food. WW is about this.
Diets don’t work period. Unless the keto diet is similar to your normal diet, you can’t stick to it. While doing the keto diet, you’re probably not gonna have energy to build muscle. People skip strength training when trying to lose weight, but you shouldn’t. Muscle burns calories faster than fat. Knowing how many calories you are eating is beneficial, not necessary. The right food choices will keep you full and happy, but you need carbs for energy. You should also eat around 1g of protein for lb of body weight, protein helps rebuild muscle fiber faster. Also, you shouldn’t lose 2-3 lbs a week, thats too much. Losing fat is a long game, and you need to do it as healthy as possible and use a method you can stick to.
Hi Kati, I am in the middle of a relapse from my eating disorder, but the difference this time around is that I had a baby almost two years ago while I was in recovery. My doctor told me that with how quickly my eating disorder has progressed, if I don’t commit to treatment she will have to call child protective services. Is this really something she could do? I have made the decision to try recovery again, but I don’t want to be constantly worrying that I will lose my child if I don’t recover “perfectly”. Thank you so much, I love what you do.
Love your channel, berry, though I’m not on keto nor planning to be. But…caloric balance and restriction is working. Period. I’ve made a huge change within a year using flexible dieting and getting back to working out. I eat everything (carbs, fats, protein, meat, eggs, veggies, dairy. Everything…) i eat considerably clean, 41 years old and haven’t looked or felt better for about 20 years…
I tried calorie restricting for 3 months, only to lose a few pound, and then put twice as much back on. Since cutting out the carbs and going keto, I’ve lost a lot of weight without restricting or counting calories, in fact now I’m fat adapted I’m still losing weight without even needing or wanting to lose anymore. I’m glad that more people like yourself are putting this truth out there, people are spending millions a year on weight watchers and slimming world, and adding up every single thing they eat. Absolutely bonkers
Eating healthy helps your body stay full and regulate hormones responsible for eating ect
Yes and these “hormone problems” are determined by how we fuel our bodies. Eating wrong and not exercising is what leads to issues in the first place. Yes food goes down different metabolic pathways depending on the macronutrient profile but at the end of the day, if you are not exercising and fuelling your body with the correct foods in the appropriate portions, then of course there will be “hormone problems.” All of these debates are so frustrating because all the different methods of weight loss are so intrinsically linked, yet every doctor and fitness persona on YouTube has to claim that their way is the ONLY way. Cop on people, what matters is a healthy lifestyle, intuitive eating (which calorie counting is a precursor for in my opinion) and finally being happythis will all lead to balanced hormones and a properly and efficiently functioning body.
Hello Dr. Weiner,
I’m a graduate student in human nutrition at the University of Illinois and I’m interested in writing about your program for one of my classes. I was wondering if there were any publications about your approach. I know this is an under-investigated topic, but do we have much research about the mechanisms behind metabolic changes we see in patients post bariatric surgery?
Thanks!
Well I lost 20kgs and kept it off. It worked for me and keeps me on track. So stupid, nah.
Fasting is the best and only way to lose weight and better your lifestyle at the same time. I’ve been training to lose weight for a while now but fasting gave me the best results I’ve ever had.
I can’t beleive I wasted 10 whole minutes to conclude that carbs are the problem! thanks for the scam video.
did you personally ever deal with any sort of mental illness? Kati
IF and keto basically lowering calories intake.
Same thing different name
Sorry I have to disagree. From my own personal experience I have lost 40 pounds and got down to 15% body fat from counting calories in MyFitnessPal app. Plus on top of it all, I eat way more and healthier.
This is terrible advice. Yes it’s true that the body is complex and that the calories you put in (quality and quantity) affect calories out.
But to say counting calories is “useless” and to point to the ketogenic diet as the holy grail is to ignore decades of empirical and anecdotal evidence.
Just saw a weightlifting guru on The Twittuh trying to sell his new book… It’s all about CICO (calories in, calories out) so immediately you know he’s just regurgitating something he’s heard.
When I started my weightloss journey 1 year ago I was so sick with gallstones/kidneystones/gout & a myriad of other symptoms (too many to name here!) that I could barely move… TG a healing prayer guy said it sounded like digestion/gallbladder & I eventually found out about bile salts… OMG what a game changer! Without going on a diet, without exercising, suddenly I was losing weight & feeling so much better!
After a few months I added in keto/carni diet & weight training to speed the process up, but point being the aforementioned weightlifting guru caused an uproar on The Twittuh by suggesting that people are fat due to consuming “excessive calories” & the ONLY way to lose weight was calorie restriction & burning more calories than you consume (heavy sigh) & then he was upset about all the “misinformation” he was receiving (in the comment section you know all the Berry/Berg/Fung fans were burning them UP! ).
Bottom line: According to weightlifting guru, it is impossible for me to have lost weight simply by improving my digestion! No… according to him my real problem is laziness & lack of willpower!
Iv lost 20 pounds and have a faster metabolism than ever thanks to cutting all carbs and suger and fasting. I can literally eat until I’m full for several days and only gain 10 pounds and 5 comes from the food in my stomach and the rest is the glycogen in my muscles. And I can lose it all with 1 day of fasting
I though i was the only one crazy who didn’t believe in the calorie concept applied to nutrition!
My issue with counting calories is that it is a quantifiable reason to restrict. If I know how many calories I am eating I am more likely to eat less.
Yeah but i bet after another while their metabolism will go back closer to normal….it all just takes time
I assume you mean calories don’t matter if you’re on Keto. Obviously they matter if you’re not in ketosis and losing weight via a standard diet. I know a dietician personally and I know she wouldn’t agree with you. I counted calories to lose 30 pounds a year ago, did not use keto. I basically traded a lot of non-satiating high calorie food for filling yet low or relatively low calorie food, as well as started intermittent fasting. It worked great. I’ve kept all the weight off as well. My dad used weightwatchers years ago, has kept all the weight off. feel like this video is a bit over the top. Yeah you can lose a lot of weight by keto and focusing on carbs elimination and not calories, but that’s not the only way. And if you ever start intaking carbs that weight is gonna fly back on. I guess you could argue it’s the best way, though that’s a different debate. And I’m sure there are a huge number of people who lose weight on keto and then rebound as well. I think most people rebound on diets because of poor planning and/or lacking mental state.
Aren’t calories a catalyst for hormones to act on? Hormones don’t care about anything other than what signals them to move which is food which contain calories.
Lol then why is weight watchers so successful. Does this guy live under a rock.
Thank you for posting these videos for us and keeping us informed.
i thank God for you Dr. Berry. I just wish I lived in TN or you worked in FL. I’d want to be one of your patients.
Love all your work doc.. been on keto now carnivore and losing bodyfat and gaining muscle. But this is the most stupid thing I’ve ever heard you say!
Sure what u eat makes a difference but people are now citing this video telling others that calories don’t matter at all!
This is ridiculous! They now think because of you that they can eat 5000calories of meat and fat when their BMR+TDEE is 2000cals and they think they’re not gonna put on any fat!
You need to re-address this video and let it be known that JUST counting calories is stupid as totally dismissing CICO as irrelevant is worse than stupid!
I lost 60.lbs and kept it off for about 6 years, then started overeating CARBS. Junk, in other words. Still programmed to eat low fat, no fat, low calorie. Found keto. The cravings that drove me FINALLY STOPPED! Eureka!
What i noticed quite early on in my ed recovery was that i absolutely needed to stop wanting people to worry about me. It’s fine if they care about me, but i need to stop wanting them worried. That’s holding me back from getting better, because I need to learn to trust for people not to leave me once I am not worrisome anymore.
I found out the easiest way to maintain my weight is to only eat when I am Hungry. I will Elaborate with more information. I am 5 foot 10 Inches Tall and I used to weigh about 220 pounds 11 Years ago. Well back then I started to go running A lot at A Local Track. Over Time I dropped down to 160 Pounds. Also Note I put on Medium amount of Muscles while I lost weight. Well going along with what the Video said at some points in my life I got Busy periodically so I was getting less Exercise for A Duration of time. Well I started to put back some Weight and got up to about 180 Pounds. Then when I started to exercise regularly again it would drop back down.
Well I found out at some point, when I was getting less exercise, that if I ate only when I was Hungry that I would not put on anymore weight, and that I would be less Hungry as well rather quickly (within about 5 Days). Then when I got more Exercise again I ate more because my body acquired A new Appetite for Food. So what I think what was going on is that my Body needed more Food while exercising, but when not exercising, for lack of A better way to put, the Human body stays on the Old Food Eating Schedule. That is of course until I Ate less which then it would adjust to the new Current System in Action.
Calories matter to some degree. If you eat a lot of calories and live a sedentary lifestyle, you will gain weight. When I was in a group home, I was fat, but never went too far above 300. When I finally moved out on my own and had full control and responsibility over my shopping and entertainment spending, I bought a lot of processed groceries, whatever was cheap and easy to make, and bought a lot of delivery like pizza, subs, etc, and also ended up barely exercising. I went over 450 pounds.
This is full of shit. If you eat 2500 calories a day and zero carbs you’re still not gonna lose weight. You need a caloric deficit to lose weight. Also I used weightwatchers for years and lost tons of weight. I do keto now but I also count my calories.
I am doing 50-60 carbs (not keto) and 1300-1600 calories a day.
I am actually losing weight doing this.
Eating less than 20 carbs and 2000-2500+ calories was simply not working for me. I was not losing weight past a certain point.
Actually by doing keto you are causing a large caloric deficit by cutting almost all of your carbs, so in short keto still works because of cico concept, and it will not work if you are still overeating
I tried Intermittent fasting for 6 months and maybe lost a little weight, but I was working out at the same time. Certainly not nearly the level of weight loss achieved that this guy is suggesting will come. I did 16 hour fasting/8 hour feeding window and was pretty damn consistent with it. I came to the conclusion I was not reducing my calories enough.
skinny people say things like “we all know if you want to lose weight, just eat less calories than you burn!” right. that’s nice.
I’ve just stopped counting calories for the first time in years and my mind is telling me that I will turn into a ballon. However you just told those negative thoughts that they’re stupid and invalid. This gave me so much motivation! Thank you!
can you please take a moment from your busy music life to take the headphones out of your ears before speaking to us
Finally quit my beer addiction. Starting over on KETO Dec 30.
“We have been said that we should eat less and exercise, and yet we’re fatter than ever. How to you explain that?” What a moron! People are not exercising and eating less calories.
Salutes dr.Berry. I’m on the keto lifestyle for almost 1.5 years. I’ve been looking around for sustainable info related to: if count calories with macros or just count macros in advance to lose weight. Thank you for your priceless info. Blessings!!!
13-20 I call my “lost years” I don’t know what I learned/accomplished those years, but at age 20 I did a lot of catching up and a lot of enjoying being alive!
Counting calories always backfires on me:/ I starve each time and always gain it back plus more…
Counting calories will burn you out, but it seems like every diet does that after awhile.
I also think that the title “counting calories is stupid” is quite gimmicky and brought in a ton of likes and subscribers for you— but the better title of the video (for humanity sake) would have been to title it, “counting calories doesn’t always work, and here’s why”) Americans are always lookin for a reason, that “golden nugget”… and well, you gave it to em.
These guys know what’s popping that’s why they laughing, and I’m all American now. all that crap is just fake, easier said than done. I’m not going to say calorie in calorie out, but just monitor what you do if calorie counting isn’t working for you and you end up binging or spend hours getting frustrated cos that takeaway you had on a social does not list calories, then it’s time to stop calories, do you think you will count calories every day of your life? Something that is short term is deprivation not discipline.
Your serving your body, therefore how will you ever serve your life or the present moment. Anyway as they say eat whole food, less processed cos your body needs to digest food again, when your digestive tract is given food that’s already been digested as in processed it will sit in your colon and rot your colon, instead of every cell reviving itself and doing its job, like when your biting that raw carrot. Nutrients are depleted too. Just recover and let go, maybe you won’t be too hard on yourself. Damn how the f* we still consuming all our time and energy wanting to be a healthier version of ourselves, we not really living life.
I’m not counting calories anymore like the good old days, and my weight was off.
So does this mean that you can eat as many calories you want and lose weight?
You shouldn’t have to sit down and wonder “what emotions am I feeling” or take 10 minutes to try to figure out what your body is telling you. All my friends and family DO NOT do that. They eat when want to and stop when they want to. Before my Ed I ate with out thinking out it, that’s something that il never have back. Counting calories is extremely disordered in my opinion, but these mind twisting ” am I hungry, am I full” bs sucks too.
I don’t count calories and I’ve lost 30 lbs. I eat a ton of salad and high quality protein. I measure my food intake in ounces. Just because ounces can be associated with calories does not mean that calories are the key in the equation. Some of my measurements aren’t even in ounces, example would be slices of cucumber or estimated volume of kimchi.
It is because it is not just calories it is also macros. But using just calories may be a simple enough to begin. Obviously not all calories are the same, but it all comes to quality food.
I invite you to read this article which has helped me a lot to lose weight, and I would like to share it with you, the truth is very good and I hope it can help you too.

Show me a study where hormones create or destroy energy and/or matter. Energy comes into the body stored between chemical bonds of atoms in molecules of food. Those atoms/molecules have mass and weight. The energy in food that is properly digested gets re-stored between the chemical bonds of atoms in molecules of fat and glycogen. Those atoms and molecules also have mass and weight. Hormones can regulate how this energy is managed, but hormones cannot change the mass and weight of the atoms/molecules where the energy is stored. If you consume less energy (food) your body doesn’t need as many atoms/molecules to store energy. Thus with fewer atoms/molecules you weigh less. Manage your energy (calories) and you will manage how many atoms and molecules are in your body.
ALL weight loss/gain is due to energy balance. There is no other way. It’s a law of the universe. Calories are simply an approximate measure of that energy, a way to approximately account for energy. Hormones are not energy…they only help the body to regulate energy. Energy in/energy out dictates all weight loss/gain. The approximation of calories used to measure energy may not be 100% accurate, but that flaw in calorie approximation doesn’t change the fact energy in must always equal energy out. There are dozens and dozens of studies showing that high fat, low fat, high carb, low carb, high protein, keto, weight watchers, Atkins….whatever…does NOT make a difference. It is all energy balance. Even if hormones can be manipulated it is still energy balance that determines weight loss.
I count calories, 71 pounds lost in 10 months. I keep it simple, 2 pounds a week. Best diet I have ever been on and I don’t have to deprive myself of my favorite food, just eat them in moderation and make sure they fit into my daily calorie limit. Everyone doesn’t want to be on diets where you can’t eat fruit, bread, rice, etc. Do what works for you! Are people not supposed to try to lose weight because calorie counting is being called stupid?? If it works for them, let them live!
Big supporter of the Keto lifestyle, I’ve lost 30 lbs and have 30 more to go. And I have enjoyed your videos but I found this one mostly short on details. How can you defend not counting calories as a reasonable way to lose weight, even on a ketogenic diet? I never viewed calories as good or bad, that’s in the type/quality of food you eat, but at an extreme would you be okay with an average someone eating 10k calories a day from clean keto sources? Are you saying your body would find a way to either utilize the additional calories as fuel or somehow find a way to pass it through your body? Doesn’t the access get stored in the body?
Tip to differentiate between hunger and cravings
If you are wanting a specific food really bad craving
If you are just wanting to eat because you need to fill yourself hunger
Calories don’t matter AS MUCH as macros. Lower carbs = weight loss. Watch Snake Diet Cole Robinson’s video “Cut Carbs For Fast Fat Loss! 30 Day bacon refeed dry fast” video. It’s the carbs.
There’s a difference between counting calories and being aware of calories. “Counting calories” implies controlling the number of calories you eat each day. However, “being aware” of calories allows you to eat as your body demands while being aware of the number of calories eaten. However, as pointed out in the video, taking the leap to more consistent keto, intermittent fasting, and one meal a day, is a path to healing metabolic syndrome, and that’s the bottom line. So counting calories may be stupid, but being aware of calories may not, just as being aware of what you’re eating and the nutrients they contain may not be stupid. Or maybe that’s stupid too. Hey, you ever read the news? Life is stupid.
I wonder how fasting affects other parts of the body? Empty stomach with all the acids? Gallbladder holding back bile? Or maybe it releasing to empty small intestine? What about the gut flora?
Thanks for what you do Dr. Berry! You are really helping a lot of people!
My wife follows your advice and lives only on eating meat and eggs only, but I am afraid to be exposed to the disease to lose her body many vitamins found in vegetables, fruits, legumes and even bread and rice, you should advise your followers instead of exposing them to diseases
Never counted calories and lost 75lbs since mid February. It is now mid september of the same year, it’s amazing. Please try if you are on the fence. If you fail at first get up and try again it will stick
Meanwhile, the doctor telling you to eat less and count calories is the size of a cow.
Amazing. To hear a real doctor talk about this.
Thank you from Ohio
Gerald
The fitness channels seem to always go on about caloric deficit, they don’t explain how you would know if you are in such a deficit.
While I agree with you that calorie counting isn’t effective for any thing, I have to disagree with you about obesity being just a hormone thing…NO! It’s the sugars in the american diet. Those are the ones that r responsible for obesity, heart diseases, strokes, the metabolic syndromes you know this, so why the heck are you saying its the hormones??
Hi. I can appreciate your video. Do you have a link to the Women’s Study? I’d like to look at the women’s ages, physical ailments, etc.
Also, on another note are you saying that if a 30 year old healthy person, who is not suffering from disease/illness of any sortif they go into a calorie deficit, they WONT lose weight?
Or are you just saying that there are too many variables as to why someone may not be losing weight even when in a calorie deficit? It seems there is no one size fits all approach regarding the old school method of counting calories however, I would think that blanketing a statement that says that counting calories doesn’t work 100% of the time is quite an overstatement.
how do you account for people who have lost weight cutting calories even if they put it back on when they add back calories /go off calorie restrictions they still klost while they were counting?
Absolutely true! I’ve been saying this for a long time from my own experience. I lost 160 lbs and calories didn’t mean squat in me losing weight.
I ate 3000+ calories in protein (steaks, bacon, cheese, chicken, turkey) and significantly lower carbohydrate intake (aside from veggies broccoli, cauliflower etc) and kept losing weight like crazy. Calories in and calories out is the biggest fad of all. I don’t know why people still believe this. It’s the macros within those calories and how your body reacts to them what makes results. I have a trainer today that’s a pro body builder and despite the fact that people still talk about this calories stuff EVERY SINGLE body builder trying to get super lean for competition will pay EXTRA attention in the end not to calories, but macros within those calories.
And this means, high protein, moderate fat and lower carbs. It’s the macros of the food that counts, not calories. As I said, I ate 3000+ calories and lost weight massively and if I switch to eating higher carbs even at 2000 calories a day I will gain weight. Calories in and out is the most misleading and untrue thing ever to hit the mainstream.
Well that’s the most depressing video I’ve seen… well.. ever.
Thanks for the honesty.
Hormones before calories in and calories out. if your hormones are optimal you can even put muscle and lose fat in a high calorie diet. But it’s very hard to achieve optimal hormones in this day and age…. lots of estrogen in foods and water supply, plus all this fake foods that are out there
honestly i do think that keto diet and fasting are not beneficial for the nutrition industry, as a result they keep selling us the calorie myth as the truth.
Today’s and yesterday’s video really helped me a lot and the questions that you talked about were/are really relevant for me. I just want to say thank you for that.
Whenever I watch a new video of yours, I never want it to end and I sometimes rewatch them, because I’m sad that I have to wait for a new one 😉
So if I eat 5,000 calories that are all keto friendly, as long as I’m intermittent fasting, I’ll lose weight. That doesn’t make sense. Provide more sources to back that up instead of just saying “it’s stupid.”
The best way to avoid this is to cut calories to only a certain degree and only for a set period of time. Sure, if you’re at 400lb then you have a long way to go. But if you’re at 250 and want to cut for 4/5 months at a 15% deficit for example, yes your metabolism will decrease but will soon rebound
Great video! Can you make one on calorie intake (eating so many calories to gain weight) for gaining muscle mass no matter the diet (keto, vegan, raw, etc)!!! That would be greatly appreciated!!!
I started counting calories when I was 13 and told everyone I wasn’t losing weight even when I eat just 1000 calories a day.
3 years later I recalculated some meals I looged into the app and BTCH WHAT THE FCK I ATE AROUND 2000 A DAY WHAT IS EVEN TOO MUCH FOR MY HEIGHT.
Yeah now I’m 16 and I’m doing it right and here I am already 30lbs lighter after 6 months. I was a very stupid kid.
That’s kinda sad. The point with the salad doesn’t work for me bcz I actually like salad and would eat it even if I’m not hungry. Same goes for many veggies. Even when I’m hungry I usually prefer not to eat sweet stuff, but prefer the healthier stuff. I am still not loosing weight tbh
I have anorexia and have for a long while. I am somewhat conflicted with whether or not I want to gain weight.
This is where they have to add resistance and increase their caloric intake to regulate.
Honestly counting calories is not something that bothers me and i didnt get any disorders from it, but its so annoying when i measure food and track calories with my family looking at me like im a maniac.
When I think I’m hungry I figured it was because I was just thirsty and confused
My sister laughed when I told them I was planning to reduce weight with just implementing Custokebon Secrets, but after I showed these people great effects after I used it they’re begging me to share with them about it. Of course I won’t tell them the detail about this diet plan, haha
Hey There! Thanks for this useful video. By the way, I hear lots of people keep on talking about Custokebon Secrets (look on google search engine), but I’m not sure if it’s good. Have you tried Custokebon Secrets? I have heard many amazing things about it and my friend lost tons of weight with it, but she refuses to tell me:(
Hey! Thank you for this helpful video. By the way, I hear a lot of people keep on talking about Custokebon Secrets (just search it on google), but I’m not sure if it’s good. Have you tried using Custokebon Secrets? I have heard many amazing things about it and my friend lost crazy amounts of weight with it, but she refuses to tell me:(
So what am I doing wrong doc?? When started keto I lost 10 kilos in the first 3 months (I never counted calories) but then nothing! I feel much better but I need to lose a lot more to be healthy… I’ m so frustrated…
The more calories you eat the hungrier you get the less calories you eat the hungrier you get it’s almost like we’re all just hungry
Once I stopped eating fast food for a week, my body stopped craving it. That alone has made me lose almost 10 pounds. Also, it’s making it easier to cut certain things out since my body is now craving less food and is staying satisfied with the amount I give it!
How much is too much calories? Can a person eat too much calories and not loose weight? For example person’s amr is 2000cal a day will he gain weight if he eats over 2000cal even if he does IF, low carb, keto? Or should he do IF, low carb and keto and not count calories, just eat enough during meal time that he’s not hungry anymore?
Can you do a video on the benefits of prolonged water fasting like autophagy, immune system reset, stem cells, and more.
Counting calories is a horrible way to lose fat. It puts you in a scarcity mindset. You binge more easily and more frequently which leads to stalling fat loss and even gaining weight.
Thank you so much I really needed to hear the answer to question 2.
Omg ahahahaha how can a person thinks it is only 1200 when it’s 2500 in fact ahusahua
Day by Day is true, GREAT advice. lose 20 pounds. in three weeks as I did single Watch the video on this website => leanbellybreakthrough1. club <= (Google it) will help you lose weight and reduce waist without taking pills
I felt like I lost out on fun at university..but then I remember all the special moments. Might be different from the norm but things like breakthroughs in therapy, enjoying the icecream for the first time in ages with friends, daring to go swimming…I think we can look at other people’s lives through rose tinted glasses sometimes.. In short, I practise being grateful.
1400 calories is not like nothing. You can eat 400 grams of chicken breast or lean beef with a lot of vegetables.
The bored brain throwing the ball against the wall is relatable af
Good vid, but you should have explained more about the diet drinksso I’ll do it instead yes there is no ‘apparent’ calories, however ALL sugars and ‘sweeteners’ are the same and should be treated as regular sugar, because they cause a spike in insulin. When trying to lose weight it’s good to have less sugary foods, instead of trying to busy ourselves with zero calorie, low sugar brands. Sugary drinks and dessert all the same. If you must have zero calorie don’t have the whole can, and opt for slow release sugar such as fruits or even non sugary food, it will give you energy but not energy from sugar, and you’ll more likely burn stored fat.
You see you did not go into too much detail about that, because diet drinks is the biggest cheat out there, when you know the facts that trick won’t work for you.
I dont count calories anymore, i was limiting myself to eating around 1200 kcal however, when i see that i have calories left over i end up binging on junk food. I just eat healthy filling foods until im satisfied and i use this
AM i actually hungry enough to eat a healthy meal?
NO Drink some tea/water
YES Eat a healthy meal
I have no clue how much calories i eat but now my life doesnt revolve around planning calories or food, instead i focus more on my studies and getting the grades i need. I started doing this after binging for 4 days straight until i was physically sick.
