Hate to admit this but the Superman is super hard for me to maintain balance for even a second. Can you recommend a version of this with training wheels? Obviously I’ve got a lot of work to do on my core and back stabilizers….
Thanks for all these videos. They have inspired me to get a board because I have been bodi boarding for 4 years but I don’t know what surf board to get if anyone could help please do.
Hola from Lima, Perú. A well designed and presented video. Great job.
When your watching surfing videos but you know your not gonna surf
Awesome videos. I started putting your tip of sitting like a chair into the backhand turn into practise and it’s really levelled up my surfing. Thanks.
When you pop up you are using the sand to jump to your feet. There is no firm surface like that in the ocean!
you guys can definitely still surf, just don’t go to BONDI with all the sheep! Rip on!
Do you use an indo board Kale? I just bought one since I’m stuck inside here in Florida. If so, what are your favorite indo board exercises?
Great video! I’ve just subscribed your channel! Quick question, how many reps should I do on multi-direction lunge???
Thanks dude for this vid. Without surfing I’m going insane. Gonna do these exercises all day haha
awesome video kale will be doing at home during this time and in future thank for the great content!
Thanks Kale, Imma use this almost every day because of Corona! Im still gonna surf during this time, but thank you
BRO IMA be honest i still gonna go surf this after noon waves are pumping
I heard keeping your distance from clothing is a good prevention measure. Is this true Kale?
Thanks Broc…
Anyone know the rules around surfing on the Northern Beaches during this madness?
I just watched this and my mom said 20 push ups and she will buy me a surf board i cant do one 1 like is 1 push up
I’m over here trying to learn how to surf but I can’t keep my balance
Hi! Barefoot, I’m so thankful for your videos. I’ve learned to surf and now I’m at an intermediate level.
I wish I could see others but I have a bad eyesight
Hi everyone, I am working on a marine weather forecasting app. If you do a water sport (surfing, kayaking, fishing, etc.) and use a marine weather forecasting app, please fill out this survey. Thank you! https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdGN4YTkHDMV9PSnMJlw4xEffroNxcZw_x-rrseG_YBZUYN9g/viewform?usp=sf_link
I wish I had this a year ago. There’s so much good info here, it’s gold. I doubt expert surfers who already know this stuff would actually be able to explain it to me anywhere near this level. (I’ve watched plenty of how to videos.) Thanks!
you used to have a video on paddling, is that no longer on youtube?
I am super hyper mobile haha, doens’t help me at all, works against me yeah. Doing a lot of strength training to make my body strong
it’s good to see a surfing tips made by a Woman! and you did well:)
#4 not always true. frontside cut back. set the rail first with your arse sinking your heals, when you are halfway start your wrap by leading with your head. this is what fanning, parko and dingo do. you arrive at the lip with more speed and a better angle
My top tip which will underpin all this advice… Move to Indonesia and learn there.
Thank you so much I wanted to surf so much and now I am a surfer cuz of you thank you so much
Awesome video, thank you much! Especcialy for the last tip… I am from Latvia and I don’t have a chance to surf so often how I want to… And when I have a chance I am trying to improove my surfing skill as much as I can, but I am forcing myself too hard sometimes and getting too serius about that, that I can forgot the most important why I am doing that to have fun.:)
Thanks again, I am love your videos and would try to use all your tips tomorrow in Mexico, Sayulita.:)
Good one! Bottom turn example is not the best. Surfer doesn’t set up properly and as a result does a big counter rotation with his arms at 1:49. If he’d thrown his back arm back just after the bottom this would’ve been avoided.
Your series are the best on the web. I am recommending them to whoever has interest in surfing
I’ve wanted to surf since I was 5 when I first watched Barbie and a mermaid tail lmao I’m soooo doing this and putting in the work learn. I want my future kids to surf too!! I just can’t wait to build such an amazing life when I get older omg:)
cheers bro. im a grandpa and this summer im goin to giv it a go. thanks for all that advice. all the best to you young man..

Epic video mate just started surfing I live in the mornington peninsula so we’re not short of great beaches been swimming and fishing all my life but never surfing in a surfing family so can’t wait to get deep into the hobbie
Anyone else bought their WaveStorm 8ft Foam board from Costco?
You are brilliant. I’ve followed your lessons for ages even before Barefoot Surf (who could mistake that voice!). I love the stepwise way you break things down and take it gradually. Aboslutely the best surfing instruction I’ve seen (and, incidentally, a great example for instruction in any field). Many thanks and please keep ’em coming.
Thanks man! I’m up for my second go with much more experienced surfers in NSW next weekend. Appreciate your approach for beginners like myself.
I’ve wanted to surf a very long time but I live in Vegas:< i "surf" on a boogie board in my pool (sadness of being in quarantine)
Question. Was that do watching you a joke or were you serious? Because it actually looked like it was making sure that you were okay.
i’m going to florida in a few days. lol i’ve always wanted to surf
Hi i have 7 ft 10 minmal and im 6 ft 2 tall if i centre my body on the board then my toes would stick off the end, should i put my body closer to the front of the board
Question, surfing is almost the same as skating? Like a longboard?
I went to this beach in San Diego, and I kept falling on my face, im horrible at Surfing.
Thank you so much, the live examples helps allot and demonstrates do’s and don’ts
I’m working so hard…’please let me me be a decent surfer someday soon’ is what I think every time I get out on the waves.
You made it look easy, but can I actually learn it in 1 day? I live a little far from the beach, so I can’t go as often as I’d want to get all the practice in, but would I be able to get this far in a single beach session?
Thanks, I hope we can all get back out in the waves normally soon, ( I hate quarantine!)
I thought he said how to pick you’re bitch and I was like but I’m gay?
Awsome vid. Really got thinking about how I feel just as I take off.. btw nice flex!!
Great video. But maybe turn down that music a little as it dampens your voice
Never surfed in my life. Watching this at 2:30 A.M. I don’t even know how to swim.
This is literally the most informational video I’ve seen thank god
actually i alwais wanted to surf sice i was little, the only bad thing is that i live in the north of italy and we don’t have beaches that’s sad but, this summer i’m going to the beach in france:)

that was awesome sometimes I see guys pop up and the back foot is right on the back pad?? why is this..? bit confusing
I’m from Missouri and going to San Diego State University as a freshman this year so I need to learn:)
When taking off on a wave I seem to pop up and my body is facing down the wave but my board doesn’t have the same direction as my body as more often more straight then towards the direction I wanna go. Should my body follow the board direction then turn together or the other way round?
thanks for making this video bro. im going surfing for the first time on sunday and im pretty excited!
Kale, you’re Goofing-up real nice! Impressive man!
Thanks for your vids!
Who else is watching this but they already know how to surf well
Thankyou so much it’s just been my 13th birthday and i got a surf board as a present, my dream is to participate in boardmasters so this helped allot thankyou!!!
I live on the sea front of a perfect beach so I’m buying a surfboard to start surfing, this video really helped me out
You have to coach me in Cali if you’re near LA. I’ll buy you the best tacos LA has to offer.
I live in Ireland and there’s only really small waves here so I can’t do any tricks or anything
What’s the surf board called that’s for beginners but has more manoeuvrability? I didn’t catch it
i have always wanted to learn how to surf. one of my greatest inspirers is kelly slater
Can you explain the mechanics and why it works to pop up like that and had a better rotate to hips?
How awesome!! Come thru Santa Cruz and lets go surfing! could use your help too lol.
Another fantastic coaching session…thanks for sharing your insights…..
Thank you thank you thank you. The value guys add to the circle Community is amazing and Beyond reproach and it’s amazing that you guys are doing that because it’s so helpful and I appreciate it thank you for future content because I will always be watching. If you’re a beginner Surfer and not sure if you should watch these guys videos, make no further they do a great job on every level of explaining surfing and this is by far the best Channel explaining all aspects of surfing that’s on the internet and on YouTube.
I had a habit of dragging my legs. I don’t know why but I remember a good surfer saying lift your legs up. Amazing how much easier it was to cut through the water.
Thanks I just got off a long board and I’ve gone to a fish 5,6 this really helped he with my feat on such a small board
Not a great tail pad fan but is there any reason that pad is so far forward?
Awesome tutorials! I started surfing this summer in east spain and its been a huge improvement since i’m watching this videos! I am so grateful to both of you, sharing your knowledge and this amazing sport.
I am 14 years old and have always wanted to learn to surf but never knew were to start this video answers all my questions thanks a bunch
I tried the pointing finger thingo and it works!!! point to where I want to go and my head turns it just seems to happen thanks heaps! hey you should really say who you are at the start it makes it more personal:) Keep it up its so awesome
you remind me of the surfing guy interview: “yknow you just get out there and WAPOW you dive in and *RAAAAAGHHRRR*”
I’ve watched endless summer a million times and even though I live in Kentucky, I can tell you you forgot the most bestest way to paddle. Knee paddling.
Think ill hit pipe with my wavestorm this weekend thanks mate!
Where should you hold your weight? Is it dead center split between both legs, or should one leg hold majority?
ok, so good video but I tried it and it was wobbly and hard. So I stood up on my knee first.
Im actually a beginner too, I recently before this pandemic took a lesson. The instructor showed me how to popup. And so I did the same. He did it on an upsloap.i did it on a down slope, which was harder. But I did it twice. After an hour of water skills. We left each other. In his assessment, I was intermediate to advance. I could popup, but I had difficulty popping up during practice on the water. Paddling it was fine, givin the fact I watch surfing just about everyday. In your opinion was he wrong for taking me out to the back end/ bigger waves? After 30 minutes of killing myself I managed to popup 1 time. He said I was doing everything right, looking back at the wave before take off, everything. I just needed a coach. Someone to teach me. My worst fear before I made the opponentment was sharks. During the session I could only think of popping up. I am 6’8″ tall. We went out to 6 foot deep
Hi, I’ve been wondering about how the v-shaped tail of a fish board affects the performance of the board. Does anybody know?
Finally a decent video on how to progress. Awesome, loved the vid
Very cool vid. Would it be possible to make a similar vid with more exercises where gym equipment is not available. Depending on where people live, in the world, there are cases where even gyms are closed.
Really like that suggestion to raise chest just before pop up. Not sure if I’ve seen that anywhere else before.
Please make a detailed wetsuit guide video it will help a lot even though you already released a video on wetsuits but imo it’s not that detailed in terms of fitting and etc
Nice video, but this background music is super annoying and covering your voice!
Can we get a how to on sharks please? That’s the only thing idk how to do
Good pointers except the paddling. To get max speed you have to paddle with shorter stroke. The last 25% of the stroke has minimal power. There is a good video that analyzes why Kelly Slater swims faster than other surfers.
Probably the most import topic is not discussed. Slipping off the board. The wax or pads are super important. If your feet slip off the board ask your local shop tips to make your feet stick better.
I never even watched outer banks and I didn’t know it was about surfing until I read the comments but anyways who here searched up surfing for beginners cuz they ACTUALLY wanna learn how to surf??
Hello bro comine hiriketiya beach Sri Lanka ok bountifully good wevs
Stoked that you’re coming to CA. Hopefully its Socal so we can get some sessions in. I need your help
I surfed for 40 year in south Africa Namibia etc then went to live in Canada and the UK had a heart attack and coma and the coma changed everything!! Now I fall off the board???? The nurse teaches you how to hop an inch after a coma. so now im learning to surf again an inch at a time. shouldn’t be much longer now……;
when you used to surf pretty good but then just stopped so now you can’t and need to watch this
Question: When I (try) to turn, I feel like I’m rotating and looking back at the direction I want to go, however; my body goes one way and my board continues going the same direction. Then I fall as my board sling shots out from under me. I’m guessing I’m too heavy on my front foot still? Any tips?
Very helpful
I’m now learning and this information will help a lot
Both of you guy are a great team. I recently have wanted to pursue a life long dream and now also being older to have the opportunity of learning along with my family how awesome it would be to share with them. Looking at getting a 9′ Surftech Blacktip. Do you feel this would be a great choice for no experience 6′ 1.5″ tall 225 lb man to learn on? I also am working on losing the extra lbs too LOL! Best vibes to you both regardless.
The most important thing to me is the pop-up. A bad pop-up is a bad habit and really hard to break once you actually learn to surf. I drag my knee. I’ve learned how to adjust, but every second counts when dropping into a steep fast wave. One second extra with a pop-up…. you just missed the wave and in the white water. Master a quick pop-up and you will be golden. Bad habits will label you as a kook forever even if you learn to surf. It’s ugly. It’s really helpful to at least learn on a long board. Thanks for the video.
whatever beach this i really wanna go. don’t care where it is. LMk
Cool Thankyou for those tips Just what I needed to fine tune and improve my chances if catching waves on my short mal board
Thanks a mil Cool Appreciate your vids Straightforward and easily understood
What fish surfboard brands would you recommend for beginners?
Very good video with nice clear instructions but there is one problem. A lot of beginner surfers are starting on longboards with soft tops. This makes the position you have to take a bit different and your stance a bit wider than on a shortboard. It is also way harder to catch a green wave if youre not forward enough on your longboard if you’re pretty lightweight like me. But other than that this video was perfect
Appreciate your coaching, I have used your described advice on backside where get low like your sitting in a chair, it works brotha.
So with foot position. When do you use/place foot on foot pad? I’ve seen people kinda do a wheely/pop nose to slow down to get barreled..
Wanna know how to rip? Go surf. Everyday. If you don’t love it… stay out. If you do it will come.
Does anyone know some good beaches in or around Perth WA for beginners to start surfing
Right here on the surfboard is just right. In front of the kick pad I put on the board specifically for my back foot. Proper stance, my back foot should be in front of the thing meant for my back foot. Not on it.
this video so amazing bra, actually at small waves i got it, but i want to know how to take off the waves 2feetor more? bcause i always fall down like in the washing machine…
Are you planning to make a faq, where you will note and answer our questions about surfing issues.
at 5:18, I noticed that when you’re standing up, your left knee is going on the left side of your left arm instead of going between the two arms. I do have the same problem and I’m trying to fix it. But I ‘ve got some issue with it
I live in the most landlocked area in England but yet I really want to surf I body boarded when I was younger a lot and really enjoyed it but have never surfed before my dream is to live in Cornwall in England I don’t know if you’ll have heard of it but it has great surfing waves some of the best in the world so I hope I can go surfing everyday when I am older!
Hey Chris, you mention having your feet just hang off the board; however, I am 5’7 and ride a 5’2. Any suggestions on positioning? Thanks!
@ 11:10 “If we Look at it again, we see the same thing happening again.” Yup, Sounds right 😉
Tail pad is too far forward. Paddling should be over a barrow in an S shape, with reach not great, sweeping under the board then flicking outward, paddling deep, head still, body rocking slightly to extend the stroke nothing as exaggerated as swimming. Watch Kelly Slater, he doesn’t paddle like you’re suggesting. Weight should be on the front leg. If you have your weight on the back leg where you’ve positioned, it will bend the nose up causing a break. Take off must be at an angle on small waves otherwise you’ll get to the bottom & the wave will break down the line without you
These videos are great. Focusing on good technique is a foundation for continued growth and improvement
Plenty for me to work on!
What a revelation. 20 years I’ve been making the forehand mistake of looking too far down the line after pop up…pumping down, and thus past, all those critical sections perfect for turns. Stings to clearly see what ive been doing wrong, but cant wait to work on rectifying it. Cheers Kale
I surfed all the time as a teenager but life and it’s obligations take a lot of us away from our passions and getting back into it has been difficult. You showed me a couple of things I have been doing wrong like not lifting my chest up when taking off. Have been taking off push up style and that does not work at all!!!:))) Thanks.
Wanky. I’m sure loads of crew in remote WA or South Coast will be doing these exercises in their ACTIVEWEAR
Are you pushing off the sand when you jump up? Any advice for how to jump up off your knees?
Easy way to surf fast just get a long board and get those 3 foot shit!!!i had to learn everything all by my self
It’s been proven that holding your fingers slightly apart (not cupped) is more efficient and advising new surfers to paddle with long strokes is absolutely against what they should be doing. This causes them to reach and with that reach, they fail to arch their backs and use their lats this burns out the shoulder muscles which are a lot smaller, weaker and are easily injured.
I have been shortboarding for a few years…im 6’4 and when i popup my back foot,im natural, lands in front of the tailpad instead of on the pad…this makes turns difficult…i can move my foot back onto the pad after pop up but its difficult…would be nice to pupup with my foot on the tailpad…any ideas?
Hi there, my board is 8’1, where should I hang my feet and roughly what tips should I consider? Thanks!
Yesterday i’m start to get surf in my hometown nusa dua with my friends, he help me to learn how become a good surfer it’s really fun although im too old to try this. And your video help me to fix my mistake as a beginner surfers thanks
Yeaaaah thanks guys!!!! let’s practice in the sunshine coast
I had a dream last night that I was surfing and now I really wanna learn how to surf
Love the new videos! Do happen to know the radius of that mat you were doing lunges over? I do the angled lunges often but im not sure how far to extend my leg when I plant my foot. Did Donal mention anything about how far to extend your leg on the lunge? As far as you can go?
Another great video guys! You guys are amazing for posting FREE surf tips that I actually apply and see improvements in my surfing.
Hey Kale, met you in Darwin for Longevity film….loved it. We’ve had a bit of surf up here in the last couple of weeks and I tried opening out on my backhand with your “palm-up” technique. Far out…..!!! I’m pretty sure I came of the top of the wave much harder and from more vertical than I ever have before. Thanks so much. Game changer.
Your back foot better get back to the pad if you want to turn tho
Wow this is amazing you guys literally shoved years worth of understanding in less than 8 minutes. Good on you ❤
Professor in the house, dont get dissipated this is very true speed and control 2 hard things to master in unison
Hey how to rip!
I’ve been surfing for a while now, I’ve had plenty of experience with foam boards now and I’ve had a bunch of practice on a 7,6 fiberglass board which isn’t doing to badly either. However when I use my 6,6 shortboard I find my pop up technique breaks down a lot and I really struggle to surf on it properly. Is there any reason as to why this might be happening or is it a thing I just need to practice more? If you could help me out I’d really appreciate it!
you didn’t cover regular or goofy foot..or longboard nose riding for next video..perhaps
Mate, Can you please do an air reverse beeakdown? Can get the punt but cant get the rotation down.
Cheers.
“Where you look is where you go”. Awesome videos as always, Thanks.
Man, I’m traveling to AUS and hopefully I’ll learn how to surf (:
Thanks for the video!
Kales, are you likelily to be down towards San Clemente or San Diego? Expat Aussie here. Love the videos and if your dates line up I’ll see you in the water. Safe travels
When your toes were hanging off the back of the board, I noticed that u u jumped up off the sand. That is gonna be impossible in the water. You have to bend you back knee. Then push your foot against the kick pad and put your front foot in from when you pop up. U don’t have to do this on a long board because your feet don’t hang off the back.
key question doing these on flat land, its way harder to not have the toe touch the ground. is this vital on a wave? ive been surfing a while and i struggle alot getting to my feet. tyring to fix this. whats the key driver to getting that smooth pop up?
Can you make a tutorial aboit the diffetences in technique between catching low waves to higher waves?
Great video thank you! I’ll be looking straight up to the lip after pop up.
Best advice I ever got when learning to surf is, look where you’re going. Not where you’ve been. Your body will naturally follow where your eyes are going.
Interesting to hear all this broken down after surfing my whole life and never really thinking about it. I had a hip replacement surgery after a motorcycle accident. I’m seriously learning to surf all over again. My legs wobble and are shakey and getting anything powerful out of my turns feels awkward . I haven’t lost my upper body strength… in fact, I’m stronger now. I can catch waves like no ones business but afterwards it’s all sheit.
My question is that in your opinion which is the best action camcorder for surfing. As there are lots of specially designed surfing cameras i would like to hear your opinion which one to pick and choose the best one out. There is this Sony AS200V Cam. GoPros off course, Sony RX0 II
, Ricoh WG-50
. And SeaLife DC2000
. These are some really good models out there in the market. Please have a look at them abd advise me accordingly which one you think is the best. I understand that you may not have a fixed opinion on this matter but, whatever advise you give me i will pay heed to it.
I surf in imsouane Morocco. You should come one time we have an awesome surfbeach
Great advice Kale.about using and utilizing the whole wave face and those drawn in lines really illustrated the example well.
U have a good compressed low centre of gravity on your bottom turns too.
One of your better videos Kale. It helps seeing how others do it less well.
You never ride the wave we see in front of you. Waves change. Looking at your feet, you see the wave you are riding. Looking along the wave, you see a shape that inevitably eludes you. Possible forms flood your imagination, only to be whittled away by your approach. Suddenly, the shape is realised, below your feet.
If you don’t look where you are going, you won’t ever know the shape of the wave until it passes below you.
Informative! I ll try some of the steps you mentioned. Super tough to surf here in the Great Lakes. Thanks for the vlog!
This guy is such a legend. Need more nice guys like this sharing knowledge. All the best Kale
congrats on your movie/documentary can’t wait to see it. love watching these videos
Super stoked you’re coming to Cali! I’m definitely gonna come watch the longevity film!!!
Hi, I was wondering if it is better to take off straighter in bigger waves? I can do angled take offs and turns but not cutbacks. I also start to struggle to catch waves when it gets overhead. Thanks.
How does one link up with you for surf lessons/coaching @kalesbroccoli @howtorip?
Where in California will you be or where will you be surfing in California? Love seeing these comparison clips of people progressing in the intermediate stage and great tips on how to use the whole face of the wave because a lot of times I questioned what could I have done! Would love some examples of how to identify what is a good section to do cut backs, round house, or even laybacks?
Hey man thx for the videso they are really helpful… I’m headed to new zealand in 2 weeks.. any good places to surf that you can recomend
You can also reference AASI instructor description about body separation.
I’m going to surf for the first time in a few days super excited so scared of the ocean and sharks but I can do this
Hi guys I’d love a video of how to surf more vertical like the turns because this is my problem
Because of you I might try surfing! Thanks bro! Also I like snow boarding.
What kind of board do you have? If I’m going to get a surfboard I don’t want to spend a lot of money but I don’t want a poorly made one either……
Where in Cali are you heading? Would love to check out your film.
I make endless mistakes popping up, hands in the wrong position, getting on my knees. It’s not as easy as it looks to get it all right. Thanks for the video.
Thanks Kale, this is just the thing to help make sessions even more fun.
Ty for these always kale and crew! Your videos are always informative and inspiring.
These are great vids… it would be great, though, if you did a full tutorial series from beginner through intermediate, and then onto advanced which “tricks” would you practice during that transition. Basically a roadmap from beginner to intermediate. What steps would you recommend to ease the transition, and speed it up.
Awesome video! lil bita feedback: It’s pretty difficult to compare two videos side by side when they’re both playing. Do em one after the other:)
This looks like a good workout and all you need is some kind of expensive looking surfboard balance board.
Great video! Stance looks a bit out of place for me, too. There is so much to look out for it can be overwhelming…
You’re so cool dude, enjoy Cali
you must enjoy Half Moon Bay/Pacifica, for yourself man!
I have a surf board and I watched this because we are going to the beach tomorrow
Can you tell me please the volume and the size of this surfboard
I really wanna know,I found a lot of problems with my size
Sorry but this is a dumb video. In the beginning you show what type of board should an intermediate surfer use and than show all the techniques and examples on a short board surfed by advanced surfers. Walk the talk and stop bullshitting
And I thought transferring from a beginner lover to an advanced lover was hard. Walking 4 inch construction beams at height, is no help to me
Why is it you are using your feet in the pop up? When in the water you wont be able to use them as they will be hanging off the end.
These waves look like they have atleast 20 second intervals. Can you please suggest or make a video on how to get past the break in conditions that are like 7 second wave periods with white water hitting your face sometimes twice in a row? I see other surfers doing it relatively easy, but it takes everything I have to get out there and then I have nothing left for the wave I want to ride.
Dude I am so jealous of those perfect waves, and they are far out not a shorebreak
The number one thing holding up my progression is the popularity of the beaches where I surf. I practice my pop ups at home, I exercise, I watch all these vids, but when it comes to paddling for the unbroken waves my mind isn’t really focused on what I’ve learnt, but rather ‘Am I taking someone else’s turn on this wave? Am I going to drop in on someone in this position? Am I going into that bodyboarder?’ Sometimes it seems the only safe bet as a learner is to sit on my board and watch the others.
I caught a great wave at the weekend, popped up beautifully, only to see I’d dropped in on some guy. I quickly bailed off backwards but my legs catapulted the board into the air straight into his direction, took him out too. I’m not making any friends down there:-D
Could you do a video on stances. Iv had a problem with my mum poking out like im squatting for ages because I learned to surf on a really low literate board. Thanks.
I think right now that’s holding my progression is my pop up. I ride a 9’0 log and I’ve been finding it easy to maneuver and turn and take off at an angle cause I came from snowboarding a lot but my pop up is still a bit slow. I’m not doing 1 knee at a time, but as I pop up I can feel my back knees slightly touch the board.
How much weight shifts onto the Back foot during the turns or is it more so just shifted to the heel or toe?
Love the videos guys keep em up.
Awesome vid thanks and very useful at this time. Keep up the awesome editing too it makes the video a pleasure to watch and to the point!
Great vid! Excited to see your film and surf in CALI! I’ll be there
@How to Rip please could you do a video on how to surf the outer reefs of Barley!!!
6:05 feet a little too close together? correct me if i’m wrong
My question is when I should change longboard to fish or short, some say u need to catch every wave on longboard before switching, but Im Just not sure, tnx
I’m going to gulf shores after all this corona is over, is it good to surf there?
Nice to see it was shot at Middleton. A good place to learn and a good video to learn from. Thanks!
I reallyyyyyy want to learn how to surf I’m really motivated now! I will start soon i hope
Thanks for advising me. I really would like to find out which camere you guys use for your filming and which model you guys use.?
I look forward hearing from you.
I was sooooo close to be able to surf pipe line before quarantine, now that the beaches are open again I feel like I’m starting at square one. Thanks for the good video tho!
I have a problem, I’ve been surfing for a while and I’d say I’m what you’d call intermediate. However, sometimes I place my back foot too far forward when I pop up so it’s much harder to turn and do anything on the face of the wave. How can I solve this problem?
What beaches do you guys normally surf at looking for a good beginner beach in Victoria to learn these skills, thanks!
this is brilliant!!. it has so many bits i need to re watch it after i go for a surf and again.. It seems to be a bit like an onion.. heaps of parts within parts.. Thanks heaps its a vid ill be coming back to.. Hey just a thought.. Would be great to discuss when you get up do you change your feet. I see some guys with back foot on the pad and others just away off it..?? thanks keep it up this is really awsome.
I often find myself too deep on the wave like the surfer at 4:41. Other than the obvious being in the right position. How do you prevent this? How do you know where the right position is going to be?
Think there’s two levels of intermediate: intermediate and high-intermediate. IMO, intermediate level can pump up and down the wave face and bottom turn. Learning how to pump and bottom turning are essential. High level intermediate is someone that can pump on both front and back side, and is starting to successfully complete maneuvers such as cutbacks, small snaps, floaters. High level intermediates also can surf waves with size. For some people it takes a LONG time to get to high level intermediate. I know people have been surfing 20 years and they haven’t gotten to high level intermediate.
Thanks guys! This is the most useful video I’ve watched since I started learning how to surf. Can you please make a video on how I will know when I am ready to pedal out further to the unbroken waves? I’ve heard so many different opinions on this. I don’t have the confidence to move onto something more difficult until my basic technique is correct. But some say I will advance quicker out on the bigger waves.
hey i’m pretty decent at surfing i surf on an 8 foot wave storm and today in transitioning to a 6 foot glass bored will it be the same when it come to standing up
Hi from New Zealand, I just had a few days in Dunedin surfing it was great, my friend teaches surfing, I’m a beginner and this video helps, thanks
very good video but is it saying something new or different? the passage from a beginner to a intermediate has many other issues to deal with. For example the take off from a long to a minimal or a short. When you don’t have anymore a place on the board where to point your feet to help the pop up. Is it a question of physical condition or there is a technique? but more important how to improve? and which are the steps to get that improvement. you see many tutorial show how to pop up with a short board but no one says what hapens when you passa forn a school board to a minimal or a short.
Man those waves are perfect. I wish the waves in my area we’re like that
Thank you so much for all the quality content you publish. You always use beautiful footage in your videos that makes me miss Australia:) I have a few suggestions/questions:
1. I still don’t exactly get the difference between a carve and a cutback (or a snap, whatever it is) and in general find it very hard to discern between various moves (despite watching many videos about it). I guess this could be a good topic for a video.
2. I’m now waiting for my first own board (I used to surf on rental boards only) and it will have a lot of volume, 75 liters (it will be a 7’6 Notox Korko board). Now I’m wondering if I made the right choice or if I should have gone with lower volume as a beginner on his way to learn what you covered in this video. I heard it’s better to focus to get as many waves as possible and high volume helps with that but now I’m not sure. Perhaps you could talk about volume in a future video.
3. It’s hard for newbies to read waves. Maybe a video on reading waves, identifying rips and other dangers, figuring out how to identify the shoulder, whether it’s going to be a left or a right-hander etc. based on actual footage would be helpful.
How much do they cost and what was the first board u were talking about the blue one?
Thanks for the tips. Your videos have been such a great help in progressing my surfing. Yeewww from St. Augustine FL
Thanks for another informative video. Can’t wait to go out and try some, maybe tomorrow.
This video was exactly what I needed! Because of the many many other videos I’ve watched of yours I’ve learned how to pop up and catch unbroken waves but I’ve always gone straight. I’m just learning to trim and I think this will help a lot!
Also, as you guys recommended I switched from a 8’ foamie to a 5’7 fish (which I thought would be waaaaaaay too small ) and I can actually pop up and ride 9/10 times. Thanks a ton guys!
Great video as always guys! I’m looking to get a fish to transition down from the 7 foot funboard I’ve been riding. Would you recommend the one in the video? I believe it’s the go fish. How does that one compare to the seaside? I’m in love with the seaside right now…
Hi guys. Good video, thanks. I’d love a video on how to do 360s on the surface of a wave. On your forehand. Body movement, wave section, board choice, how to practise for it on land etc.
For the most part, do you suggest intermediates to practice going directly down a wave after take off than learning how to bottom turn back to the top of the wave, making a triangle formation instead of having intermediates focus on going across on the green?
What about the chicken wing pop up via the legs where one leg is in chicken wing position and the other is in the back.
Is this not a good pop up option or would that impede future progress
I get it now * identify where you want to be, preferably towards the lip ” This is Gospel. I,m applying this wisdom to all aspects of my life even my women. It would great to go on a ” surf ” with you. Provided you have a heart defibrillator to bring. I,m doing more simulated drowning manoeuvres than surfing at the present.
Thoughts on a “RipSurf” and how that may improve a surfers skills?
Great! I’m gonna rewatch to get the details! I need to have a perfect take off! As usual, your videos are the best tutorials! Thank you Ryan! Aloha!
I love the videos!! anyway we can get some more vids for intermediate/advanced surfers?
Great video, learnt spot. Down in my local spot, the waves aren’t as of quality and there a lot of close outs were I surf, even if ai can’t always get perfect left and right handers can I still progress my surfing on average waves? Thanks in advance?
I have a suggestion, if you’re at all looking for suggestions… I would promote this product to yoga instructors because they are always trying to challenge themselves. Just a thought! Kino Yoga and Kerri Verna are who I was thinking of. I would use something like this for yoga…I like surfing personally, but I think it would function just as well not looking like a surfboad. I think it’s a cool idea. What is strength good for if you don’t have balance? ;p
Great moves! I wish I could go down in a pistol squat like that on the board!
too badd no one in the world has one of those things or is willing to spend money on it. stupid video really. completely irrelevant
