UX design is a bullshit career built for people who want to be graphic designers but can’t
Another question: I’ve seen a lot of designers defend the separation of UX and UI as different fields and different jobs, even if they require similar skillsets and designers from both would work together. BUUUUUUT when I’m looking for information about UI specifically, it’s almost always conflated with UX, which gives the impression that there are no positions for UI designers, that the visual design and interfacing as a complete job isn’t a thing, it’s almost always a step in the process of UX design. Does anyone actually get hired as UI designers to do just UI?
If you have studied Graphic design in college/university or self-taught you should know it is categorised as commercial art and design is as much as provocative as art in galleries it is as about creating emotion, form, composition and communicating ideas as well as function on a commercial level the only difference you are doing it for clients. And yes, design is about solving a problem, whether it be visual or 3D or both.

Don’t.
Here’s why:
1) No big career progression
2) Pay is sub par
3) The job position is not flattering, especially when you’re in your late 30s, all your friends are now senior managers and directors and your’re a “Graphic designer”.
4) Clients are the fucking worst. There’s no “Right and wrong” like with other jobs. It all depends on what the client feels like. One day he/she wants something, the next they’re feeling something else
5) Clients and people try to get you to do things for free all the time and try to convince you that “Oh it’s just a small logo. Takes you 10 minutes.” I low key wanted to shoot some of my clients.
6) Every ass wipe with a macbook and photoshop calls himself a designer, so for every job there are a little over 10 thousand “designers”. Companies don’t even skim through all of them. They just look at the first 30 and pick the best one, even though an amazing designer could be number 100 on the list.
7) The work hours are… Hectic. I mean hectic. Forget work life balance. One day you will work 2 hours and sit 6 hours waiting for work…And the next you are working 16 hours with no breaks, no over time, nothing. I’ve had days where I literally woke up, started working, ate while working, and went to bed with only 1 10 minute break to take a shit.
And no, I am not trying to shoo you away because I am trying to “preserver my job”. Don’t worry. I left that career behind me and enlisted in the armed forces.
For the love of god, please listen to me and don’t get into graphic design.

The first part is crazy to me because at my school I’ve noticed people going into design because “its the art that makes money” is heavily hated on. Most of us started in middle/high school or have specific goals in the field other than money. More of an Art Chantry “I am not an artist” mentality.

I hate that unpaid internships are such requirement, some people can’t spare the time to work a bunch for no pay.
Mature and experienced designer got a different set of problems than the young and inexperienced and that is corporate ego. People hiring designers are often lead designers themselves and they avoid people that are better than themselves, they are perhaps in a lead role and afraid of hiring someone that is a threat to their job and status in the company, so they avoid to hire someone who’s got more experience than them. Actually, it’s easier for a designer straight out of school to land a job often. There’s alot of unhealthy ego in this industry. I’ve experienced this repeatedly.
Shae, I just happened to come across this video and am glad I did. Although I realize most of the folks getting into UX/UI are quite a bit younger than I am (I am 54), I am not letting that stop me. My background is what I will call “unique” for the transformation I am about to make in my career. I have been working in just about every capacity for nonprofit organizations for the past 30 years. What I realize is that my innate creativity and my ability to recognize and empathize with people’s pain points and devise viable solutions will be an asset to my development as a UX professional. I know I will encounter obstacles… I am a 50+ Black woman making a substantial career change, but I know I can make it happen. Thanks much for sharing your journey!
Don’t forget it’s not just about listening to what people say, but also looking at what they do. Some hidden needs are in the gap between the two. Another point is about getting the team creative at the Ideation step, just after having met the targeted users. Facilitate workshops, stimulate creativity to help the participants find the best ideas to the real problems and represent them in a way one can test is with users. This is a big part of the UX job too!
Do I need to have excellent drawing skills before joining a design program?
I’ve taken a Basic Design class in high school my senior year and took art seriously and did fantastic. I’ve taken couple of art classes at my community college and struggled as I advanced. I took 2D design first which was my favorite because it had a lot of acrylic painting. I did decent in Drawing 1 but not great. I had interest in 3D Design and Ceramics, but I realized I’m not a sculptor and basically failed.
I enjoy art as a hobby, but I don’t think I have the perseverance to pursue art and finish things on a deadline. I consider my drawing skills as a beginner. I don’t think I’m good enough to do an arts major. I’ve been out of school for a while so I might need to retake some classes and work on my skills.
I graduated from highschool 2 years ago in 2017, and I spent those 2 years out of highschool trying to figure out what I want to do with my life. Even my first two semesters I at University this year I still didn’t know what I wanted to do until now. I love graphic design and everything else is too hard/boring for me, so I think this is the best choice for me.

Please keep making these videos, it’s nice to have a more personal approach to understanding this area of research which I had quite a siloed view of and think that people can make a stereotype of people who work in the tech industry
“You’re not expected to know everything” I am unsure about how courses work in the USA but in UK the way the course works is that you are given brief after brief, barely any educational lectures teaching you anything and peer feedback on the designs you make. Around 90% of what I know now as a Designer I have learnt through experiences in work environments, reading books related to design and a lot of mistakes. As a Graphic Designer I would suggest you highly research into the field before making any decisions about taking on a course:)

I would say my main question is this: would I be able to do graphic design and make a decent living off of it and provide for a family? I understand that when you’re first starting out that you’re not going to make all that much cash flow. I also understand that most beginner graphic work is freelance. I totally want to get into graphic design and I’m also interested in learning animation and multimedia in general. However, I’m concerned that I will not be able to do the kind of work I’m interested in and be able to make enough money alone to support a wife and 2+ kids in the future. I’m only 19 but I want to make a smart decision here. Anyone have any kind of advice they could give me? Thanks!:)

I made the mistake of totally misunderstanding and not researching the requirements of UX and UI. I thought it was code heavy which I started to learn but I realized I’ll be average in it. thank you so much for this:) i’m interested in graphic design but i am heavily leaning toward studying illustration. i’m having a hard time choosing which to study because i’ve heard that design jobs are easier to come by and have more options for different jobs. however, i love to draw and my dream is to create art that is my own style, maybe make some comic books or childrens books, and sell my art printed on products and clothing/etc. at this point i’m thinking i should study illustration and squeeze in some design classes (in my uni and/or online), since i feel like learning basic design will be valuable in doing the things i want to do.

That kid has had the door shut so much on him because no one wants to hire him because he doesn’t have any experience but how do you get experience??? Hi Shae, thanks for the video! I live about 2 hours outside of SF however there are no tech companies in my area who are looking for designers. I currently work in marketing but do small amounts of UX design for our website/mobile. What recommendations would you have for someone with little to no connections in the bay area to find job opportunities or connections in this field?

Currently certified as an electronic imaging artist at a vocational school and am in college studying multi-media. My school requires to take the whole umbrella term instead of just graphic design and printing. I currently am starting a small business to create personal business cards and logos. Thanks for the video! I also took design course at Bloc and completed at the end of May this year. Now I’m on job search, but it has been hard so far. I also try to attend meetups as many as possible to network with professionals. Sometimes I wonder if I chose a wrong career path and wasted my time and money, But, I really do love this field to learn from users and creating something for them. I had some interviews and phone interviews coming up. I hope I can show how enthusiastic I am at the interviews.

Graphic Design is Solving Problems, with a lot of imaginative thinking.
I’d say its an artistic way of solving a problem.
I’ve never been someone who has been interested in art and design, but ever since I got into high school, I’ve always liked the idea of graphic design, so I’m taking the class and believe me when I say that I have not taken any art classes at all because this class focuses on graphic design and I’m really loving it. I don’t know if I have the potential to be a graphic designer because I’m not as artistic as most graphic designers are, but I really like the idea of it and it’s fun working on projects in school

This video is awesome and truly helped me out with my decision to pursue GD. I’ve always loved art and design but was often criticized for it. I tried to get into nursing school for 7yrs. Although I love all things medical, nothing was going right. So I recently decided to try graphic designing bc why not, what harm will it due besides paying more money for classes? And in the end I’ve been loving my classes so much. I guess art and design was always my thing and I wish I started sooner. ^^

There Is No Graphic Design Course At My Local Sixthform, Should A Take ICT instead?
I took web design for 3 years in high school and liked it, but by the third year I had realized that I liked the design aspect rather than the coding/constructing part. I’m thinking of going to college for graphic design and to hopefully get a bachelors. I already have my AA so I would need to transfer, but do you recommend any colleges that offer a bachelors in graphic design? I’ve done some research and it’s sort of hard because a lot of them are either online, private, or only offer it as a certificate/AA or as a minor (at least on the West Coast). I guess what I should ask, is if it makes a difference if you have a bachelors in graphic design vs an AA in graphic design, or a graphic design certificate.

I think that a lot of empathy… you should have extra research to validate because you can get confused with what feels natural to you like you said about the benches. And I don’t really think you HAVE TO be that much on the computer, there are other tools to balance healthier.
I’m in highschool and I’m terrified about my future and what to do. My family insists for me to get into law or business and for a while I’ve just gone along with it because I didnt know what else to go for. And now I’m thinking about graphic design but my parents disapprove of it, I’m so lost and confused:(
If there is no art in graphic designing,then there will be no graphic designers…Everybody will do the work by themself

I’m honestly a bit more of an illustrator, but that’s harder to live on lol
I believe the industry pressure need to be mentioned as a con.
1) juggling multiple projects.
2) finishing projects in less than hour as per the continuous nagging of Art Directors.
3) Meeting with clients or client servicing who dont know what they want and they want you you discover why they hate what you made without giving you any kind of thread to work on.
4) A loooooooot of hours of work. So if you value your life think again.
5) Sadistic Art Directors in some agencies.
6) Side hustle is a must after long hours at work if you want to pay the bills and practice. Because agencies wont teach you techniques.
7) Not all companies accept a certain type laid back designer.. it is all about the culture so research before interview or work.
8) Very competitive environment and the market is saturated with designers who will take your job in cheaper salaries.. so you better start finding a good market value.. something unique in you.

You said that to be a designer one needs innate talent + technical education. I think that practice and education is what makes a designer and not their talent. Yes, it is easier if you intuitively know what looks good, but everybody can learn that if you are willing to put in the effort.
