Gradually, according to set point theory, the normal body set point keeps adjusting upward. When we try to lose weight, our body fights to maintain the.The set point theory states that the body maintains its weight and body composition through internal regulatory controls. According to this popular theory, we all have different settings that impact our usual body weight.
This is a process known as set-point theory. If more people understood that stagnation is an expected and natural part of the weight-loss process, then they wouldn’t quit prematurely. If you ask me, set-point theory is the reason why so many people fail on long-term weight-loss goals. The set point theory argues that you have internal controls your body uses to maintain a preferred weight.
It uses these controls to adjust how much you eat and how you use energy. These internal controls include hormones, metabolism, and genetics. Here are some ways your body fights to gain the weight back after weight los.Scientists believe that the average person has a set point range of about ten to twenty pounds, meaning that the body will resist attempts to change that weight.
Our body defends itself against changes to our set-point weight. That is why diet, exercise and diet pills are not a permanent solution as they do not change our set point.Set point theory states that that your body has a genetically and biologically determined weight range that it is predisposed to maintain.
It is the weight range that your body is programmed to function at optimally. A complex variety of bodily systems are constantly at work to maintain the set point, including metabolism and hunger. The Weight Set Point Theory suggests it’s going to be extremely difficult to lose weight and keep it off. According to the weight set point theory, your body doesn’t like changes so it.What is the Set Point Theory?
The job of a healthy metabolism is to keep a woman’s body at a set point, which is a body-to-fat ratio within a 10to 15-pound weight range that optimizes her chances of survival.Rather than being permanently fixed, the weight set point is influenced by several environmental factors and can change. For example, the average palatability or desirability of one’s food is important, with chronic consumption of more palatable food generally resulting in a higher weight set point.
“The metabolic set point theory of homeostasis” is a complicated, medical way of saying that your body: Has a natural tendency to be a specific weight Will adjust internal processes to stay at that specific weight, such as speeding up or slowing down metabolism. This theory proposes a proportional feedback control system designed to regulate body weight to a constant ‘body-inherent’ weight, namely the set point weight. The system, according to this theory, adjusts food intake or energy expenditure (or both) in proportion to the difference between the current body weight and the set point weight.According to the set point theory, when a person drops below their body’s pre-determined weight, or set point, their metabolism may slow down to keep weight on. When a person’s weight rises, their metabolism might increase to fight the weight gain.
The Set Point Theory of weight regulation is an attempt to explain why people can maintain their body weight at a relatively stable level for long periods. The Set Point Theory suggests that body weight is regulated by a feedback control mechanism in order to maintain a set body weight, often times one that is “predetermined” (1).Set point theory contradicts traditional weight loss advice, which considers weight loss to be a numbers game: if more calories go out than in, you can expect to lose weight.
By contrast, set point theory argues that—through a combination of physiological mechanisms, hunger, hormones, and behavior changes—there is active biological control.I know set point theory is a hard pill to swallow, especially when you’ve been conditioned to believe in weight loss like it’s a coming savior. It’s worth it to let go of trying so hard to control your weight.
I’ve experienced returning to the lower end of my weight set point, meaning I’ve lost a decent amount of weight.

I agree that nobody is predisposed to being overweight as such. Not as simple as that for sure.
WFPB I was definitely not sitting at my healthy set point. I was bloated, overweight (almost into the obese category), anxious, depressed and beyond miserable.
But we aren’t all the same. Do what works
more volume on food with less calories….means veggies with low starch content and not too much oil…hmmm
I love your encouragement gift!!!! Lord bless her with supernatural strength to do your work to bless others and keep her safe and favor in 2020
Wow, very interesting video….
I have a question… out of all of your clients that have followed your plan, how many (or what %) of them have been able to keep the weight off for 2+ years?
I want to go vegan but i am in ed recovery (bulimia) so everyone is kinda afraid i might Use it for restriction but i am 100% not…
Do you know what to do?
Thank you Emmie this is so helpful☺ I used to be a heavy meat eater and nowadays I’ve been incorporating vegetables and fruits, slowly but sure ☺
So what is in meat or dairy that causes weight gain?
Because starches and grains are fattening too.
Potato chips are plant based and whole foods if fried with skin on.
But they’re fattening.
Can we still eat meat n stay lean or should it be a vegan diet:'(
Really nice video, I just have a quick question though about set point theory. It’s that, can I still eat as much as I want but in a whole foods, minimally processed diet with meat? I do like the idea of going vegan but it just isn’t going to work for it at this certain time. I do include some meals that are plant based though. So basically, can I reach my set point even if I eat lean meats?
I’m going to focus on my diet when I am fully grown. This is only because that’s what my parents want.
If we sent you an email, do you reply, or is it just for the channel?:)
(Don’t mean to sound rude, I think it just looks bad in text:( Sorry.)
Thankyou from the bottom of my heart Emmie for helping keep my bmi in a healthy range. For years I’ve been told by doctors and dieticians that my weight would not dramatically change because of my genetics. However since being on your diet for a few months now, the weight is flying off and finally my bmi is constantly in a healthy range. Seeing this video justified what i thought, that all i needed was someone who knows what their talking about and to make it achieveable. You have guided me to more success in 3 months with my weight then others have in years. I can never thank you enough and like everyone else i adore and admire what you have achieved in your young life. You truly are a gift hunny and so glad im connected to you.
so what if my pre ed weight was overweight? that isn’t necessarily healthy either. I’ve been in a few ed centers and I had one time where I was a certain weight and maintained it on a large amount of calories without exercise or minimal. would that be my set point? does it change over time?
Nodding along but also totally distracted by how perfect your brows are
to lose weight do you really need low fat? Lots of seeds and fats have so many good nutrients. I find 60carbs and 20fats/proteins is good for me but will this prevent me from losing weight?
OMG YESSSSS!!!!! I’m Vegan, lol obviously. For about 2 and a half years.
I can’t quit watching your right pinky move with your “quotations”
Great video girl! Love it!
I tend to eat too low calorie on this diet, which makes me not being able to fall asleep:( even a little calorie deficit makes me stay awake, it seems. Do you have any solution? ♥️
when I was in my 20s I went into the Military and I weighed 180 lbs I now weigh close to 300lbs
Starvation mode is not a thing unless you are literally starving. Set point theory is also fairly flawed. You seem like a nice person, but I think it is extremely irresponsible to recommend a book with such a well documented misunderstanding of scientific studies as “Health at Every Size.” The average American is overweight or obese. This is NOT healthy. I appreciate that you encourage people to pay attention to your hunger cues and to be aware of your hunger. I think that’s good advice. However, many of us have a disordered relationship with food and unreliable hunger cues. Being aware of your energy needs and expenditure is not inherently bad.
Linda Bacon is not a reputable scientific resource.
Fabulous video. Excellent information. I always thought it was genetic & environment related but I am not a dietitian or nutritionist so depend on experts like Emmie that have reliable and accurate information.
Totally agree with all of this, the number of ways WFPB activates satiety mechanisms and promotes appropriate weight loss is crazy! Great content, subbed!
Awesome video as always lovely and beautiful Emmie!!! ❤
My set point is 135-137lbs on a low fat WFPB diet…..When I went low carb high protein vegan, I got to 120 lbs
I ate like this for most of my life but I never managed to lose weight, the medicine I’m on for health just bloats me out weight wise…. I also am bed ridden half the time and struggle to cook for myself at al… large amounts of allergies like citrus’s, chillies, raw tomato’s, fish, meat and most florals… what do you suggest someone with lupus, MS, arthritis etc and asthma allergies, eczema etc… I eat almonds as a snack and watermelon or cherries usually but I’m a sucker for the odd piece of chocolate every night and cheese is something I struggle to give up… but meat and fish always made me quite sickly…. any suggestions?
Love you beautiful love the videos literally you just beautiful love you beautiful ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Sooo, I have never worried about what I eat. I ate anything. Then, menopause came. I don’t like my new set point weight. How do I wrap my head around that?
My set point is set at 195! Ya no! I’m fighting what my body wants to be at! I need to lose weight per Dr! So I can’t keep my body at 195 set point! What can I do!
The thing is I answered yes to a lot of the questions on both sides of the equation! So am I over my set point weight, under it, or at it? Or am I just obsessed with food because I love cooking?
I have gained 20 lbs over the last 10 years, with 10 of those being since we went into quarantine restrictions in Mid March. I feel gross. This needs to go away.
‘ve heard people talk a lot about the bodies ‘set point’ and how we have a range of around 5-20lbs that is where each individual body is healthiest. I have recently begun working out more and doing a bit of strength training, purely because it’s something I enjoy and it’s a good way for me and my partner to find more time to spend together. My question is this, if I lose fat but build muscle (as a by product of the added exercise, it isn’t a hard and fast goal of mine as I do try to live intuitively) am I still at my set point? for example, if I weigh 160lb now and in 6 months I still weigh 160lb but my body has changed because that weight is now muscle instead of fat, is that still my set point? or will it then change? Hopefully someone in the comments can answer this!
I would recomend eating mostly whole foods, with treats here and there, rarely.. otherwise, I doubt all in would work. You would just be working against your health but in an other way.
Thanks Colleen really interesting video. Do you think it’s almost inevitable you may put on weight (if you’re coming to this after prolonged dieting) before your body finds its set point? And also I am 50 so can I expect my set point to be higher than if I were in my 20’s?
The moment where you been on a diet since age 9 and now you are 281 lbs at age 24 and you are like wow years of dieting has caused this set point to go higher
I really struggle with this just because I really struggle eating a lot of fruit because of the texture I think I’m just a sensitive person. I love veggies but I don’t feel as satisfyed as maybe I would with fruits but I struggle to even swallow them.
Ok so I answered “no” to all of your questions relating to possibly being over my set point weight, but I am 39 yrs, 5’2” and weigh about 145. So my question is, how does the idea of a set point weight fit in with physical activity? If I have a healthy attitude toward food, but yet I am not active enough, is it reasonable that I would be over my set point weight? Thanks!
You talk about a set point weight, I don’t diet or count calories, I am 5ft 2inches and weigh 13 stones 6 pounds, so therefore I am classed as morbidly obese, and yet I eat exactly what I want, when I want it and don’t put on any more weight, I don’t lose any either, but I am considered grossly overweight, could this be my ‘set point weight’, doesn’t seem right to me as my brain tells me I should be at least 3 stones lighter than I am. I don’t eat biscuits, cakes, etc, or lots of processed foods as I consider these ‘bad’ foods, I eat fruit, veggies, only white meats or fish, oatmeal for breakfast, my only ‘obsession’ is chocolate, but even then I don’t eat it to excess as again I don’t consider it a ‘good’ food or choice. I have followed calorie restrictive diets in my younger years (I am now 68), so perhaps I have raised my set point weight, so if it cannot be lowered is this what my weight will be from now on and unless I eat only lettuce on a starvation diet, my weight won’t go down, obviously not a healthy way of eating , perhaps I have to be happy the way I am, confused
I need rules around my food since I am overweight. I ate whatever I wanted for a long time and gained lots of weight. Rules give me structure and guidelines to follow. Having no food rules when you have a food addiction doesn’t work. I am eating more whole foods and have cut out a lot of processed foods as well. I’m healthier now than ever before!
It’s easy to say all of this when your set weight is naturally skinny. My parents are both naturally ‘overweight’ and they eat relatively healthy foods my mom decided to combat her being naturally overweight by always yoyo dieting and having food rules and my dad just embarrassed it and is obese with a host of health problems
Love love love this! I’ve been on my intuitive eating journey for just over a year now and it’s the best decision I’ve ever made. I don’t believe I’m at my set point yet but I have faith my body is figuring it out. Thank you for the great resource ♥️
This is such an interesting theory. I thought that when I stopped dieting and stopped my food rules I would just exponentially gain weight. That’s the thought I had for years and why I kept going back to dieting. It’s so great to know that it won’t happen. I’ve been diet free since October 2019. Yeah I’ve gain weight, but eventually it stopped. It fluctuates but i haven’t gained exponentially like I thought
I read that our body’s set point can increase with weight gain holding us at a higher point than in the past. How common is it for an intuitive eaters set point to decrease with time?
Hello I have a question, when you are coming out from the diet restrictions and overshoot your weight, how long does it take for your body to find the set point? Thank you for your help
When I started taking a particular medicine three years ago, I gained about 25 pounds. I’m able to manage the side effects better now, but I feel like if I didn’t restrict myself I would gain even more weight and any that I’ve lost since then. Unfortunately I have explored all options but I absolutely need this medication…I would love to let my body take over but I don’t think it’s capable of regulating on its own at this point.
Good vid. Lyle McDonald goes in depth with Leptin and it’s role in the dieting bodybuilder in several of his books. His conclusion is that injectable Leptin would probably cure most of the negative effects of low calorie dieting.
Thanks for the video! Good stuff!
One question came to mind: How do you know if you have reached your set point weight when you should not use a scale? Are you only measuring by how you feel?
I’m scared my set point is going to be like the YouTuber Stephanie Buttermore. She is beautiful and amazing but for myself I would not want to gain as mich as her.
I wanna recover an I do intrusive eating I don’t know if it’s the right way to recover a what if I keep eating an I’m gonna get bigger I eating anything but not sure on what to eating to get to set point
What about hormones messing up your appetite? I am 50 years old and perimenopausal. My doctor told me to start eating less, because my declining hormones will “betray” my body with weight gain in the coming years. I was told weight gain in the abdomen will lead to heart disease and diabetes. So, I’m trying to avoid these problems, and I don’t want to gain weight, period.
I said yes to both set of questions.. what now? What does that mean? Am I above? Below?
You said that under eating can increase your set point weight, I have restricted in the past, does that mean my set point weight now just higher? Is there anyway to lower it?
Hey Colleen! I am 20 years old, underweight, and have amenorrhea. One day I decided I had enough and read the Intuitive Eating book. This and your channel have really helped me keep a positive mindset about gaining weight. I feel more nourished than ever! I really needed this video because i have been looking into the whole set point theory. Thank you!!❤️
But what if your metabolism works improperly? Any organ or system in the body can malfunction. Couldn’t you be born with a faulty metabolism?
I love that you mention primarily eating Whole Foods as a part of reaching set point range. This is where I differ from anti-diet culture as well. Thanks for the great content!:)
They’re obese because they’re ignoring their hunger fullness level
Are you checking, wether you are eating enough? No front, but I think it is possible, that you eat to less calories and don’t notice, than loosing weight cause of this restriction you don’t do active
I also think a lot of people aren’t in tune with their bodies and they overeat when there body is trying to tell them they are full
this is beyond confusing for me. someone help because its just not clicking.
What about someone who has never been anorexic or been obese but wants to lose like 5-10 pounds. I started counting calories to lose 5 pounds, with 1 pound a week being lost according to my calorie counter (myfitness pal). This weight gain of 10 pounds happened in 3 months when I was at an internship with a free buffet for the period where I overate. Would this affect my set point or be negative in any way, I’ve been counting calories and for the most part, it’s not far from what I normally eat it just affects when I go out to eat at a buffet, where I would normally go all out. I have started exercising a bit more but it’s fairly light: 30 min of yoga and going on 15-30 min walks and I also put this in my calorie counter so I don’t think it would be bad but I’m open to other opinions
I feel like you only describe the positives, like you might not actually feel the best in your set point, you might hate your body and feel fat, the important thing is you don’t have to love your body because it does so much for you. Maybe you could touch on that? It might be hard for you to understand because your body is naturally very privileged and slim. Great video tho.
I’m eating only junk food in recover. It’s the only way to get enough calories (3000+). My stomach is very small. How can I make grow my stomach? I can’t eat all my life junk food…
this video is one big effort to avoid responsibility
she runs her mouth about “over exercising”,… but doesn’t even get into detail about what over exercise would consist of.
I know snake oil when I smell it, and this amount could be used for topping Cobra flavored popcorn.
ex: she mentions weights where the body is “happy at”,… the only part of the body that can interpret emotions is the brain. your body does NOT have a separate set of emotions of it’s own. that notion is pure stupidity.
Thank you. I love your calm, clear manner. I am doing KETO and IF….and apparently need some tweaking. I am 70 yrs old, 5 ft 6, 157 lbs. How do I join your coaching program?
I want that avocado plushie so bad. Thanks for the advice btw. I’ve been recovering from orthorexia and I was afraid to death I wouldn’t be eating the right foods to get back to optimal health.

Hi Alice Olivia, U r absolutely beautiful and a healthy slender young lady. I love your videos. I’m 58 years old and disabled. I’m in my 6 month of recovery. I cannot be as active as u. I can probably do 1/7 of your movement. I have almost a non existent appetite. It is soooooo very hard 4 me to eat enuf to nourish my body. I have overshot my size big time. I don’t weigh myself and only measure myself when I need to figure out what size I need to order clothing on line. I only have 1 outfit to wear every single day. My bra is too tight and very uncomfortable. I’m almost completely vegan except 4 fresh caught tunas and eggs. Is there any hope 4 me? Can u PLEASE reply to me at [email protected] cox.net. Please note there is only 1 n in my email address. I’m looking 4ward to your reply. I know u r super busy, but I’d appreciate a reply soooooo very much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I agree that eating “species-specific”, as you say, is a good way to live generally. Species-specific isn’t vegan though. Humans are natural omnivores. We evolved as hunter-gatherers.
Your videos would be so much better and more credible if you weren’t always pimping a vegan/plant based diet.
Awesome info. Never knew about our “set point” now I understand when I would workout super hard and strict diet I gained weight.
Yesssss! I became really interested in the HAES and the intuitive eating movement but as a palliative care nurse, it really bothered me that there is very little information on proper nutrition, even in the intuitive eating book. I understand it’s important to have a healthy relationship with food and not police yourself but in today’s society, food is designed to be hyperpalatable to keep you coming back for more plus the amount of advertising is absurd! I love learning about nutrition and what I can do to help prevent chronic disease and a whole food plant based diet is the most significant thing a person can do to prevent disease. I’ve had numerous patients with stage 4 cancer prolong theirs lives with plant based diets, this cannot be ignored!
Thank you VERY MUCH for this! I love to watch Ladle by Ladle videos as well but I always get confused about how she ignores the fact that in todays world, we simply cannot afford to eat intuitively sometimes… The “food” is full of processed stuff and chemicals that are designed to control our brains and mess up our hunger clues (and force us to eat more). Most obese and “fat” people would indeed have much LESS health issues if they lost weight, and started to eat “less intuitively” (=whole foods instead of brain changing junk food).
ALICE this was so lovely and helpful of you to do!! Could you please talk more on excessive cortisol in the body, ie from excessive exercise?? I think I’ve defintely experienced that…and does going to bed late cause cortisol levels to rise too? Love your advice!
I just don’t believe that saturated fat, sugar and salt are the enemy. Yes, highly processed foods never signals to our body a “stop” signal because it doesn’t contain any nutrients. But there are many people who are naturally at a healthy weight while still eating these types of foods I believe the real enemy is a belief, a belief that you have lost control of yourself in the presence of these things.
Also, animal products should not be seen as “bad” or “unhealthy” or “fattening” in the slightest. Animal products are perfectly acceptable and make the meal even more well-rounded such that we meet our body’s needs. No person who is energy balanced will gorge themselves sick on meat or eggs or dairy. They usually eat it as part of a meal, and eat until they feel full. Think about all the slim people in chain fast-food restaurants who eat barely any plant-based foods in their meal. They haven’t acquired the false belief that they have no control over these foods and won’t binge, therefore remaining in energy balance and not gain weight.
I have to say again, fat, sugar and salt are not evil. We don’t binge on them alone, because we see them for what they are. They are not the agents that will cause you to binge. They make your food taste good. We need to look at the meal as a whole, rather than looking at parts in isolation. Assuming your meal as a whole is nutritious, even in spite of these additives, then you will feel your body signalling you to stop. For example, when an energy-balanced person eats chicken schnitzel in deep-fried bread crumbs, we are still getting nutrition from the chicken. The chicken is the bit of the meal that has nutrition, the deep-fried bread crumbs is an example of the nutritionless additives mentioned (sugar, fat, salt etc.). I have nothing against deep-fried breadcrumbs every once in a while they make a schnitzel taste good:)
Being vegan eliminates the decision fatigue and will narrow down your options so that you are more likely to choose a nutritious option. I think it’s great that vegan diets more often than not include more vegetables and fruits this way. Nonetheless, I think that an omnivorous diet could be similarly conducive to health while still including fats, oils, sugar and salt to make your food taste good, at the very least.
I know many vegans will disagree with my point of view. But there is a tonne of evidence that fat, salt and sugar are not the enemy. The belief that you have lost control of yourself in the presence of these things due to brainwashing of orthorexic articles and diet culture is the real enemy. Having a healthy relationship with food will often lead to a healthy weight range. I think many will be afraid to try weight restoration on a high-everything omnivorous diet if they watch your videos.
I’ll leave with this: always question anything that you watch or read on the internet (including me). Cheers x
this doesn’t really make sense though..
A lot of obese people eat really clean and a lot of people that are skinny eat junk everyday how do you explain that?
Good tips..I’m 40 y/o I’m 5ft 11inch…and 218(this morning), by the new year i would like to be down another 5-10lbs…i have little or no willpower…and with the winter coming I’m afraid my body will naturally gain because EVERY year…..anyway, i don’t mind exercising…just HATE gyms and weight…i only enjoy cardio…think that will ne enough…say 30-40 minutes a day?? What do you think??
Does everyone overshoot their set point after a long period of calorie restriction? Does that absolutely need to happen or is everyone different?
I eat a whole food plant based diet and I STILL crave oil, salt, and sugar. Things certainly don’t change overnight.
Hi Alice. Yes we can’t dismiss the nutrient values of foods. Those who don’t gain weight eating junk foods in abundance is also dangerous. Because they give it to their inside organs not to fat cells it is even more dangerous. It is not only about weight gain but health. I don’t say to restrict and never enjoy your favorite foods but using it in regular basis.
Why have I gained so much weight? I switched from a standard American diet to WFPB 2 years ago. I always maintained a BMI of 22 on the SAD without even trying. After being vegan for 2 years, I’m now 20 pounds heavier, & my BMI is at 26. I never eat junk food, & I don’t drive a car. I ride my bike to work & anywhere else I need to go. I’ve always listened to my hunger cues & have NEVER restricted calories in the past. What gives? I’m pretty frustrated.
It’s not hard to get enough calories on a whole plant foods…
opens a jar of 100% peanut butter
Aren’t you concerned about nutrient deficiencies? I’d be thinking about omega-3 fats, which are vital for brain health. DHA is not readily obtained from plant foods. And aren’t fats crucial for hormone and neurotransmitter production? I think you can lose weight on this diet but long term you are going to have problems.
I think we DO have set points for body weight. Years ago, I had gastroenteritis (vomiting, diarrhea) and lost 7 pounds in a few days. After I recovered and could eat again, I was STARVINGLY ravenous until I gained all the weight back, and then my hunger went back to totally normal.
Thank you SO much for this…!
Just want to share my experience…for me giving up the “lean” animal protein sources was and is a huge part of my anorexia recovery!
Eating a vegan diet is NOT restrictive at all when you do it out of the “right” ( ethical”) reasons.
My dietician said I have to eat animal products. She said animal products have amino acids I can not get from plant foods. I don’’r want to become obese or have to restrict calories on a standard American diet anymore!! Has anyone else had a dietician I sit on animal Érica consumption? Help!
Am at a set point. Not going to give up though! You are always encouraging and helpful, thank you.
I whole-heartedly agree about minnie-maud… It makes me cringe. You seem right on with primarily eating healthy while allowing exceptions rather than eating everything
So I love your videos, BUT, I do have one small issue…. I feel like you’re blaming obesity solely on a poor diet, which just isn’t the case. There are plenty of medical issues that can cause it, whether it be lupus, a thyroid problem, a chemical imbalance in the brain…. But it’s not always just diet. And I would also like to mention, there are TONS of neighborhoods where buying whole nutritious foods, isn’t possible because there aren’t grocery stores for miles and they basically have to deal with processed food because that’s all they can get/afford. There are MANY factors that go into becoming obese, just like there are many factors in developing an eating disorder.
I really hope I don’t come across as rude, or disrespectful, again, I love your videos, you have been helping me so much, I just needed to throw my two cents in on that.
Can your set point be over weight? My body fights me and wants to gain up to a certain point so easily
You have no idea how much I needed this video omg. Thank you more than you know
Love love love all your videos. I was excited for part 2. Can you do a video touching on adrenal fatigue after ED’s or even just in general? Also about coffee? Lots of love from the US! ❤️❤️
This was great! I was wondering if you could share your thoughts on intermittant fasting? I found when I was at my setpoint and intuitively eating I kind of did this naturally.
Good video. It’s important that people keep in mind that obesity, especially extreme obesity, takes time to happen, often an entire lifestyle but can begin progressing in childhood. Though genetics play a roll, 99% of the time it is a slow, steady addition of weight that goes unchecked until hormonal issues make the condition difficult to reverse. That’s often why we see people who are VERY obese eat not too much more than someone maybe 50% their size but struggle to get healthy: by the time they decide to make a change, they’re so hormonal out of whack that a typical approach often isn’t enough.
I also think it’s important to mention that, for people with a history of restrictive ED’s, it is almost unheard of to ever become chronically unhealthy, overweight, etc, because of dietary changes; they’re two completely conflicting lifestyles and mindsets: if you’re prone to restriction, that is largely a part of your brain chemistry, and such a fear of somehow completely changing who you are and becoming obese just isn’t realistic. The most extreme end is probably just overshooting your set point, which is not the same as becoming obese.
Hi Alice, thanks so much for sharing this!
I‘m in recovery for about 2 month, still experience massive EH and I’m already in my overshoot..
How do you seperate EH from emotional eating? In the beginning it was very much EH but now I kinda doubt the be only EH, l catch myself stuffing my face when I‘m anxious or sad.. And I‘m like in between two things, not want to restrict any foods but also don‘t want to overeat all the time when I‘m bot feeling that good.. any suggestions?
And in addition I try to eat a plant based diet but when it comes to EH or ‚binging‘ I can‘t resist the procced food..
much love
I haven’t weighed myself in over a year, but I know I have extra fat all around my core. I was looking at pictures of myself growing up…so like high school mostly. And my body now is pretty similar to my body back then (minus some extra curves and such)…does that mean I’m at my “set point”? I just feel like that layer of fat shouldn’t be on my stomach/hips and it’s discouraging feeling like maybe this is my body’s happy place. I eat 80% Whole Foods on a weekly basis and have been doing so for about a year now. I love your videos so much so never stop making them!
Hi Alice, I started eating a hclf vegan diet a couple of months ago. I wasn’t loosing any weight so I started doing a high fat low carb diet per my doctor and the weight started melting off. I went back to the doctor after going hclf to hflc and I developed a fatty liver. I decided to switch back to hclf and i gained back the weight I lost and put on 10 more pounds. I found your videos and lilykoi and decided that I was going to accept my body and eat hclf because I felt happy eating that way and had a ton of energy. After 3 months I stopped gaining weight and I’m eating a lot more! I feel like I have a positive relationship with food and this feels right even though the weight isn’t melting off. I feel so happy now, and I lost two pounds! It took a month, but given how much food I’m eating it’s amazing, lol. I’m going back to the doctor in October and I bet I don’t have a fatty liver anymore.
still in recovery, everyday I find myself questioning: am i eating too healthy, is this my ED controlling again? still don’t have a good answer. gonna let time do its magic.
Sleep, water, plants, mental calmness, and using your bod as transportation!! I’m about it and it’s funny how so polar opposite it is from when I tried to starve and run myself to exhaustion to “find health” because this just comes naturally and involves no restriction. I see so many people purposely trying to eat less or kill themselves at the gym when they could just be changing the WAY they eat and the way they think about moving. I’m totally on board with your message and the more you talk the more confident I feel no longer worrying about how much more I eat than others, etc. Now I just need to make it through a year or so of plateauing… 😉 You’re lucky (based off your thumbnail) that yours didn’t go to your stomach at all like all of mine did! But I’m sure we all feel like we got it the worst. Thanks for the awesome series of videos:)
Thx sir, this absolutely makes sense because personally I lost 30lbs almost 3 years ago & had not gain more than 6-7lbs back at most before quickly loosing it again. Although I eat much more when initially started loosing weight but hasn’t gain any of it back, has my body fat set point changed?
Sorry but i’m a little confused. I’ve seen a lot of recovery videos and ‘find your previous set point weight’ video. No one has ever mentioned the whole food plant based diet, and still they come back to their pre ed weight, following a standard diet (after overshooting) Is the whole food plant based diet meant to lower your pre set point or what? If that so, can someone go back to his set point weight without this diet? I’m not against it, but i think that is actually not the best for a person who is recoverying from anorexia/ortorexia (at least in his recovery stage). Thank you for your time, btw your videos are amazing
Thank you so much for this!!
I want to share my opnion again (I commented one of your other videos that I want to just eat what I want for now because eating only plant based would trigger my ed)
I am in recovery for about 2 months now & for me it was very important too to just eat whatever I was craving. I would 80% of the time crave sugar to be exact and the reason is mostly psychological because as kid my mom used to hide them from me or Not allow me to have it. Now after eating lots of sugar for many weeks I came to a point where I had to be true to myself and be aware of what sugar does to my body. I know that I am not feeling extreme hunger anymore & I know that I reached my overshoot weight. I was afraid to eat more healthy and cut down the sugar because it used to always make me fall back into restricting. On an other note it was just comfortable to eat fast sweet snacks. But my body just didnt feel good anymore.. always tired, bad acne and the hunger would come back fast and as I doubt that it is extreme hunger or the tiredness side effect of recovery I knew I needed to change things up a bit. I felt ready for it & it might sound stupid but: this is my second day of eating more healthy (more fiber, more plant based etc) and I already feel so much better. I do also feel not triggered to undereat and I feel like I am slowly going to find my way ♡ But in order to come to this point I had to eat junk food carefree for some time. I feel like if you are ready to eat healthier your body will tell you.:)
Another great video! I want to share a good way for healthy body moving with all you lovely guys out there.
Lilycoi Hawaii has a “posture series” on her channel. These are mindful posture exercises that will not
exhaust us too much but strengthen our bodies. Can´t wait for the next video, Alice! Hugs to you!
Loved this, great video! Your an amazing inspiration, keep up the great work girl! ❤️ You’ve helped me so much in my transition from vegetarian to plant based eating and introduced me to lilykoihawaii channel so thank you so much!
Makes since to me! I’ve been a 18-21% BF All my dang life! I got down to 17% a few months ago, and I started waking up with Peanut butter jars open next to my bed! My body would get me up in the dang middle of the night to eat something! Now that’I’m at 19% again the peanut butter jars have disappeared! Crazy! I’m going for 17% again, and this time I’m going to move stuff out of the house like peanut butter!
So inspiring and so true.
Thank you girl, keep being a giver, and thank you for adding this value to all of us.
I feel physically and mentally ready to get back into movement/exercise, but whenever I do I end up going too hard and injuring myself:( how can I find a healthy balance with exercise?
hey, what’s the name of the video editor you’re using? love your videos btw
Uh oh. She lost me with the DNA plug. Stick to science, not marketing.
Never give up your DNAonly way you’ll get mine is to be related or with a warrant
Hi Becky, I just found your channel! I love it. The information is great, but the presenter is even better! You have a sweet, calm way about you that makes it easy to follow and listen to. Blessings to you….and much success! Great hubby too
Thanks for all your advice I am working towards weight loss, and even though I have to lose 8 pounds only, it’s so hard
What is metabolic ID? Are the quizzes I see a hoax or is there something to figuring out your ID number? Could you do a video on that?
I’m stuck at 155 down from 178. I’m hoping that’s because I wasn’t able to exercise for a while due to surgery…but I fear I’m just stuck here. At least 155 is better than 178.
omg, i was just thinking this yesterday i keep getting back to the same weight. just in time, thanks
I have to agree! It helps me so much in recovery to let go and just eat whatever and not “clean” or “healhty”. I think at some point I’ll crave more veggies but at the moment it’s so nice not to exercise and just eat whatever I feel like (which is a lot of junk food at the moment:D)
I did the DNA Comprehensive report. I found out that I am at higher risk of obesity and diabetes (which I already knew lol). It picked up on my Vitamin C intolerance. Also said I would be more suitable for a high protein diet (25% it says). And it also said that I have slight impaired glucose
tolerance with a late dinner time and slight increased risk for type-2 diabetes. My IF schedule is 7am-3pm so this fits perfectly. I also lowered my A1C from 6.8 to 5.4 from a keto diet. Very interesting info, thank you!!
Another useful video, thanks Dr Becky! Although I am still far from my goal weight, it is interesting to know that I might not get below a certain weight. Very motivated to learn more from you.
Set point? I only wish I had set pints as low as most of these comments. In my 20s my set. Seem to be about 220. As I couldn’t get any lower than that no matter how much I dieted or exercised. In my 30s I couldn’t get below 230. As you see I keep gaining weight when I stop dieting. In my 40s it was 240 and now I’m in my 50s and I cannot get below 250. I’m so frustrated I stop dieting or year ago and I’m way above 250 now. It seems my body wants to be extremely obese which makes me extremely depressed. As I’ve aged it’s become harder and harder to do this high intensity exercise you talk about. There is no way I can even do anything like that. I’m lucky that I can walk. And yes I’ve talk to my doctor etc. etc. etc.
my hight 5,1 n w8 should b around 55,,, bt my set point is 80 kg,,, on 80 kg i did keto, carnivore, if, omad, 24 hours hard dry fast, 3 dy n 10 dys water fast bt no w8 lost… im over all healthy MA,,, no health issues,,, can anyone guide me wt the hel i do to lose w8????
I’m 16, I’m going to try to lose weight in the next 90 days, this is probably my only obstacle, I hope it doesn’t effect me, but hopefully not.
She is so awesome watching her and so helpful with info on are health thanks
i think the real truth here is, when you get down to a certain level of weight, it takes more work and more effort in micro management of nutrients to keep losing.. Most people haven’t got the time or inclination to take it that far or your life would be taken over by food management.. I really dont think the body has a set point, if you think of starving people in the war how skin and bone they got…
Ahh love this so much! So much good information. Love you so much Alice, your videos are helping me so much to stick with my recovery xx
I have not heard you recommend a supplement before. I hope you will do a video on supplements—multivitamin, chlorophyll, beet root, or others you might recommend and/or not recommend.
Always a pleasure to watch your videos very informative
Paul,,, Great vid,,I first heard about “Set point” part way into my ADF,waterfast,Keto,,,I’m now at my goal weight and as long as don’t deviate stay at 34″ waist,,46″ chest,,,,won’t lie have had the occasional week out but then that’s just been one meal a day and most else,,,,,so yes totally agree with you,,,,,,cheers for shedding light on this,,,have a great day,,
I cannot get below 170-169. I track calories w a coach and do HIIT workout 3-4 times a week…..eating 1300 cal a day….my coach believes I am over eating….but I record everything! I’m stuck
So the calorie-reduction over time lowered their metabolism or their body adapted to it. I guess that means they have to do more and more exercise which would be exhausting and wear the body down. So With intermittent fasting, you maintain calories, but you eat in a window and give body time to burn the stored fat and you level out your insulin or you improve insulin sensitivity. Yes, hormones are important. That is why stress and lack of sleep can be problematic with weight loss. Anyway, good information. quick question: i drink cofee in the a.m. Would you recommend Half & Half over Whole Milk (to add to it)? half and half has less sugar, but i think the whole milk may have fewer calories. which is more nutritious?
I am 77 years old, 5′ 8″ tall, and weighed 160 when I decided to lose weight. No diet worked for any length of time and always stalled at 155. Then I heard of Keto, and cutting out the sugar, grains (which I love) and starchy vegetables were the answer. It took me 5 months to get to 145. Now the goal is to stay at the level. You videos were a big help and still are. Thank you!
Thank you, Dr. Becky! As always, your videos are very helpful.
Everyone always says they are leaving a Link below ( 23 and me), yet I never see a link?
Love your videos! You have helped me so much! I am down 20 pounds so far!
Wonderful video.. I appreciate your help and guidance… I am stuck right now and your short video gives me hope… Thank you Dr. Becky… Judy in Tennessee…
I believe in set point theory but I’ve noticed completely different body shape/composition at the same weight at different points in my life. Currently restoring to a healthy weight for me from RAN but I feel like it is mostly fat tissue versus muscle. I wonder if you can comment on weight distribution or how your body composition changed. I am afraid I will get to my set point but be at a much higher BF % than when I was here years ago and working out (was around 10% BF, and I am a male). Although I am lifting weights my body is just not putting down muscle as much, and my recovery eating of around 3000 calories probably outpaces my body’s ability to strictly apply it to muscle.
I think it does to a certain point. I’ve heard the set point described as what your body weight was when you were 25 years old and in your prime.
I’ve always felt this way. Whether I was gaining or losing weight at around 195 lb my body would stick so to speak. It was as if it wanted to stay there and I would have to have some kind of breakthrough to get larger or smaller. Thank you so much for sharing the information.
Great video I sent it to everyone. I especially needed it I’m still going up and down in the 170s hello just can’t get over the hump down in the 160s.
Hi everyone:)
In this video I would like to show you the scientific background of the set point theory. Everybody talks about it but it always seems to be such an mysterious thing where nobody knows if it’s really true or not. I tried my best to bring a bit of a light into this topic and hope it is helpful for you. The links of some of the scientific articles I used, I will put under my video in the description box.
Take care!:)
Well done for making the point near the end that there isn’t a one size fits all solution to health and weight loss/maintenance. We’re all individuals and what works for one might not for another. My body doesn’t do well on high carbs, so low carb high/moderate good fats and protein with minimum of 4 workouts a week I have found work great for me.
I maintained a weight of roughly 125 pounds for two years and then after I started working midnights thus messing up my body clock, making me more sluggish and making me overeat and I got to 172 pounds (45 pound weight gain in 4 years)
How do I get back down to my previous set point? I don’t feel healthy here at all and I know this can’t be my genetic set point; I used to be able to bike across the city with no problems now I feel gross and winded biking down the street
When I noticed how bad my weight had gotten (I’m only 5’2”)I started eating 2000 to 2500 calories a day and I lost 14 pounds in 3 months but I’d prefer to get back to my 125-130 pound range
How do I do this? I can’t stay at a weight of 150 + pounds I feel gross; I’m not sure if I’ve
lost weight I’m too scared to check but I know I’m not at my heaviest because of the way my clothes feel
Hey I’ve been researching this and I am wandering if you could help me with some questions!: as a kid I was super thin!!! I weighed 85lbs at 14 and then I hit puberty and gained weight! So I started restricting now I am 16 and I weigh 135lbs: #1 if I am naturally a thinner person does that mean my set point will be lower??? And just to let you know my eating disorder was never extreme I usually ate between 1200-1400 cals + cardio + fasting and yo-yo dieting (I tried every diet under the sun!!!) so if I was never extreme #2 does that mean I’ll find my set point faster?????
I feel like I have to unlearn a lot diet culture has “taught” me!!!! But yo-yo dieting and restricting brings short term success and I am looking for long term success!!!!!
#3 am I even sick enough to try to recover????
My set-point when I was 14 was at 60kg (I´m 173cm tall). Then like almost every teenager I started dieting for some reason. After the food restriction I binged on food and gained 10kg. My new set point was at 70kg and it stayed there, no matter how hard I tried to lose the weight. But now something interesting starts: I fall in love, I forget about dieting and enjoy life. I´m 19 years old by that time and like almost everybody at my age I eat a lot of junkfood. AND: My set-point suddenly goes back to 60kg.
With 23 I got pregnant and my weight raised up to 80kg, then through yoyo-dieting to 60kg
-> 70kg -> 65kg ->75kg -> 70kg -> 80kg –85kgMy new set-point stayed at 85kg. Last year in October I started my recovery and gained a lot of weight. So now I´m at 100kg. What ist the set-point my body wants to go back to? Is it the last set-point (85kg) or my natural set-pont that I always had while NOT dieting (60kg)? A lot of people say that a set-point can only be increased, but never be decreased. But why did I go back to 60kg when I was 20 without dieting and by eating a lot of fastfood???
I feel healthiest with 60-70kg. I feel very sick and exhaustet with at least 80kg. So now I really feel terrible physically. I have edema, I feel like I´m close to a heart attack, I can´t move properly. THIS is not my healthiest weight, that´s for sure.
Can anyone help me: I have yoyo dieted for the last four years going from my lowest weight of 60kg to 107kg (doing low calorie restriction to eating only junk food I have not been able to maintain a weight for longer than like a month). I am currently 102kg I dieted for like 3 weeks lost like 4 kilos, then binged on junk food for like a week, have been eating normal (no crazy calorie restriction just healthy food at 1600 cals) for the past two weeks. I’ve slowly lost 1 kilo over those weeks. What should I do to get to my set weight naturally?
I’ve often wondered about this topic. My “ set weight “ appears to be 135-140. Thanks for all your helpful videos.
Love your videos as you speak sense. I will say I mildly disagree with you believing we can’t really re-set our weight set-points. If obese people were suddenly forced into a long-lasting famine starvation situation, their set-points would soon change. You never see a fat third-world starving person!
Im recovering from anorexia and i think im around 5-10lbs heavier than before my eating disorder. Will it eventually go back down?
I once cut to a lower weight (15%bf) and started gaining muscle since then. But I continuously felt so hungry and finally fell to bulimia and went back to the original body fat, which was around 30%. All these changes happened in 3 years. I am right now thinking maybe, my natural body fat is 30. but i am so frustrated right now because I am a 30% body fat girl with a high muscle volumn(my lean mass is about 58kg), this makes me look horrible.
This is such an important topic that honestly is not talked about enough! thank you for saying the things that need to be said and sharing your thoughts with us here. I also make videos about ED recovery and just uploaded a video about comparison in ED recovery, which I believe is a very relatable topic. Stay Strong xoxo
this intro is sooo loud:0
but the video is good and helful anyway
the intro just hurts my ears everytime I watch your videos in headphones xD
Fat cells can increase the more fat you put on during obesity,,,even with cosmetic fat removal,,, autophagy reverses that whilst Waterfasting,,,I read up on that so often do 48 hour water fasts,,,,,I tried this and ADF,keto through desperation as a last resort and found from being 15 stone I’m now 12 stone 5″ft 8″ and now my ratio is waist is 34″ which is half my height,,,,,though now want to get to 32″ waist and keep chest at 46 arms would like back at 17.5 or possibly 18″,,,,, but in my early 50’s nice to be in similar shape to when I gym instructed over 20 years back,,,,,,,,,
Not gonna get the 23 and me DNA kit. Research as to why you shouldn’t either.
Great vids! I’m 43, it’s nice to see an athlete around my age to help get good motivation and tips from. I pretty much agree with you on the set point, unfortunately I’m not the tall linky guy you are, I’m more the short stocky guy, always battled with my weight. I believe I’ve reset my BF point once if not twice but only by about 10 lbs each time. Like you lifting for around 25ish years but I’m a slacker. Sorry so long.
Good video:) Coach, what do you think if eat in maintenance calories with a slight deficit of calories (150-200 kcls) and at the end of the week I have a very aggressive deficit, eating around (150-300 kcls) Will I lose fat? I mean, making a weekly deficit number, instead of a daily number? Thank you for support!! Greetings from Costa Rica.
Kind of depressing to hear it won’t lower Coach Paul. I went from 40+% bf to 10%. Lost 220 lbs. I guess i will always pay the price of being food focused and hungry. I guess that’s what I get for letting myself get that large for so long.
Dear Paul, I absolutely agree with you, i’m genetically lean, my off season form is close to ‘stage lean’ form. The hardest thing for me to put some muscles. Anyway i sent you a flexible dieting guide request email this email address but i haven’t got any feedback yet.
I love your videos, you’ve given me many useful information . Thank you, Paul.
This is not related (sorry), but should you measure coconut oil per tablespoon in a solid or liquid state according to the nutritional facts?
It is possible and doable but it takes a lot of consistency, will power, dedication, every day, being overweight when I was younger, I can look back and say I’m way learner now than back then, and I think what it took a lot but I feel much better.
I hope it is because ya girl wants to stay lean once I get back down to it haha
Where’s Dr. Joe? Feel like he should’ve been a part of this one. Still good content! Already peaking striations in your the shoulders, keep it up!
My body always seems to want to find it’s way back to low 180’s it seems like. I’m really interested to see as we push into new lows for me how my body responds to that because I’ve never really tried to get much leaner than I currently am, but definitely growing out I was team skinny boi.
This is random, but I would love to see you do a video on weight training/bodybuilding for women like me who are on the taller side. I’m 5’10 with a pretty sturdy frame. I consider myself a mesomorph. I already lost 50+ lbs
But it would be nice to know what to expect with weight training or competing (for tall women)
I’ve come to very similar conclusions/observations through my own experience on this subject, great talk as usual, Paul!
Hi after 4 years and half restricting calories, i have increased them since july 2017, but i have gained 22 pounds and just by eating 1400-1500 Kcal. At the moment i am not doing exercise because i have a knee pain. I haven’t done exercise 2 and a haf weeks, but i don’t undesrtand what is going on?? Will i lose the weight because i reached the highest weight in january of this year and since i started gaining i don´’t know what to do. (I am sooooo bloated, i feel tired, it’s horrible!!!! My metabolism is forever damaged???Any suggestions????
Hey Paul! I emailed and never received the Ebook. Just wanted to let you know.
This may not correct, however, I do believe it is. The amount of leptin you secrete is relative to the amount of fat cells you have. The only REAL way id to have fat cells sucked out of you. You can get fat enough and actually grow MORE fat cells, which would increase the leptin, and thus, increasing your set point. You dont get rid of fat cells by losing body fat, you just shrink them.
Seems like the best way to do it would be to cut bodyfat the right way, and THEN get liposuction or some other fat cell destructive tech or procedure
Watched the documentary. What about resetting your set point? Can you reverse diet to a point that you can eat more calories than what you ate during the weight loss phase. The doctors in the video make it seem quite grim.
Loving your videos!!! During this quarantine I stopped tracking after counting points for 14 months and began eating more. I now eat what I am serving my family and have found that I am still maintaining my weight. Maybe I am at my set point?!?! Thanks for your videos…I am learning so much. Plan to find Healthy at Every Size and keep learning.
How do you deal with those mental battles with your body image on a daily basis while still trying to lose weight or gain weight?
Hi Paul! Excellent video, what is the name of the documentary? Thank you!
My weight is fluctuating crazy and still gaining eh…. overweight already….hel..p…
I am 6 foot I can walk around 240lbs very comfortably but I am around 205 lbs today… so hard to be this weight
Skip the introductory theme and just get to the point.
Otherwise great info
From 3 days I’m hooked on to your channel n watched many many videos.
I love your shirt! wish those dems would come back to sanity!
This makes so much sense. I used to struggle with anorexia for quite a few years and spent nearly a year in clinic where they fed me 3000-4000+ calories per day.
At first I gained weight like crazy since I was severely underweight but then it balanced out. I got better, started building muscle and now my maintance is super high and I often struggle to eat enough. I love food though so that’s gr8
This is an interesting theory how does age play into it? I think I really messed up my set point I was 130lbs from seventh grade until I was 25, but then I got a very stressful job, ulcers, and gained 100 lbs in the course of a year despite not eating much (puked all the time so desire for food was low). Ever since then my body has fought me every step up the way and I got up to 292 despite adding lifting and eating healthy. Been plateaued in the low 240s for two months and finally had to lower my calories more because 2k wasn’t making progress anymore. Really enjoying your videos even if I am not a physique/BB competitor.
I love the content. Just not the creepy smile at the start everytime
Hmmm….maybe leptin is my issue. I can eat 4000 or 2200 calories and I am hungry 24/7 the hunger never ever goes away. My test level is over 900. Hm…
You definitely deserve way more subscribers! Keep it up . And do you do personal training?
I recently discovered your channel and subscribed. Every video is interesting and very helpful, thank you!!
Definitely an underrated channel. Keep pushing out dope info!
Any time I approach 10% body fat, my hunger starts to increase. I always felt like my body was trying to say “no way, we’re not going there “ . 12%-13% I have no issues. It all makes sense now.
Interesting. A leptin shot to blunt hunger. Since keytones blunt hunger, would exogenous keytones blunt hunger?
Lol, you make a good point about our psychology from youth. I grew up being overweight. Worked hard to lose 90lbs the past year and was excited to get down to a size small shirt. Then I was like, “Oh crap! Wait, I don’t want to be small!”… And now I have to balance that desire to be lean with building strength and muscle mass.
I have a athletic build in high school I was 220. Since then I let myself go I’m at 295. Good news is im on track to get back pre 250 this yr. By next summer I plan on being back 220 ish
Is it pointless to try to loose weight then? That’s rather depressing…
Makes sense that you paid attention to all of the food while you were starving. Also your stuff is great, I was at a plateau for a while with my strength training and weight loss. I’ve managed to lose fat and get stronger by applying one rule I never thought of. You actually went over it and boom gains came back. I look better and I’m a lot stronger with all of my lifts. I do Olympic Weightlifting and Powerlifting. I also do kickboxing and just started Jujitsu and man it’s fun. Thank you!
I am definitely the one that need to work very hard to keep a lean and low body fat. Thanks for the tips
Could u pls make a video on Helmut Strebl, his diet and his training methods
