You have to tailor the plan around your own specific goals/needs. Become more informed about fitness and nutrition and then you can do this. Her plan appears to generally be targeting girls that want to lose weight. 1600-1800 cals a day is NOT an unhealthily low amount and will achieve that goal, for GIRLS only however. If you lift weights, training resistance, many times per week, OBVIOUSLY this would not suit you. Calculate your own basal metabolic rate and cals burned a day and suit your own plan to that. But as a very general guideline, there is nothing wrong with this plan and i think its laughable the amount of people harshly criticizing it in the comments. Its really no wonder CVD is the biggest killer in America and people have lost all grasp over what constitutes gluttony. After the 28 days, if you re-increase your caloric intake by 10-20% over the following few weeks, that’ll appease your metabolic adaptations over the 28 days and you can start increasing the weight training side of things rather than restrictive dieting and cardio, and that’ll put on the muscle mass that makes you lean. Its a simple cut-and-bulk. Throwing the word starvation around is fucking banter cause its nowhere near starvation and its offensive to true starvation to say that. Our body has adapted to be resilient towards so much shit from an evolutionary perspective and this diet for a girl to lose weight is completely adequate. But considering these peoples’ logic in the first place they’ll probably read this comment and disregard it while going around throwing that ‘every girl needs at least 2000 cals to live this is starvation!!” which is also totally hypocritical in itself since youd also be using a baseline number without any substantiation

It’s funny the moment I switched to weights, I’m building more muscle mass and losing fat at the same time on my fitbit progress chart…my weight loss is slow and steady whereas…the moment I did more cardio based exercise part of my routine and only 1.5 hr weights + 5× 1hr 9-11mph running in a week, my weight drops exponentially, I’m hungry all the time, I’m skinny fat and still not muscle at all. The scale isnt everything and cardio is exhausting. I understand your frustration. I dropped 10 kg in a year doing something similar and I didn’t look any different to how I was before. I actually felt weaker in energy levels. I just wanted to sleep after workouts and would be hungry when I went to bed. Besides I was obsessed with calorie burn during workouts those days where cardio seems trump weights on that. Never again. Lift weights-after burn is always great! Plus you will reach for the right foods and your clothes will fit better!!

I love your videos but there’s a couple of things that aren’t right in this… Kayla herself is only about 5’4, and the HIIT component isn’t 6-7 days per week, it’s 3-4 with LISS and rest on other days. That said, I agree with the comments re: the monotony of it and the exercises not changing with the PDF guide! Just found your channel and love the short girl focus! I’m 164cm/5’4 and it’s great to see some tailored info!
Good video to share your own experience. I’m petite 5’2 and I actually gain weight when lifting weights and lose weight when doing bbg. It just works for my body. So I think it is sustainable for certain body types. Saying that you should only be doing hiit once a week may apply to some but not all. Just wanted to add my own experience.

So, I have a really difficult issue that I’ve been trying to solve forever: how do I eat well on an extremely low budget? I mean, EXTREMELY low. I’m a full time student with multiple jobs, but I’m so broke that I had to live in a car. I rely on neighbors and charities for food, which is often pizza, highly processed foods, and very, very few vegetables but they’re feeding me for free, so I’m not going to be picky.

Sooo good. My roommate did have a version of something of Kayla’s that had deadlifts and heavier squats in it? Maybe BBG Stronger? But I think most people benefit from working with an actual coach, especially if they are new to fitness…like my roommate was. She had me go to the gym with her to make sure her form was right because this wasn’t addressed in the program! lol. PS. I second the Tracy Anderson review suggestion

It looks like some people in the comments don’t get it so let me break it down:
Petite women have to lose weight at a slower and steadier pace than taller people in order to grow a SUSTAINABLE lifestyle.
I am 5’1. On a VERY active day I MIGHT hit a calorie expenditure of 1700. That’s including 7000 steps, going up and down stairs, working out with a personal trainer at a competitive gym, etc. On average, it’s closer to 1600.
In order to lose a lb a week, I need to eat at a caloric deficit of 500 calories. So if maintenance were 1600, that will put me at 1100 calories a day of food. No one should eat less than 1200 a day unless prescribed by a Dr. for extreme weight loss goals. Therefore, I am really only eating at a deficit of 400 a day.
Cardio many times a week will make us SO hungry that 1200 calories will feel like much less due to having less fuel to burn. It’s a vicious cycle that quickly destroys muscle, messes up your hormones, and causes your body to cling to fat. Even the smallest snack will set back progress against calories in vs calories out. It’s terrible mentally to endure.
The optimal plan is at max 2 HIIT sessions a week and strength training in between, with LISS or Yoga on your off days for recovery. Strength training is important because more muscle means you’re burning fat steadier throughout the day. HIIT should be supplementary to daily fat burning caused by muscle recovery after strength training. HIIT gets your blood flowing and your cardio in a good spot, while strength training causes the actual growth and repair of muscle which builds the toned and lean look we all want.
So, to circle back to the beginning. Someone who is 5’4 or 5’5 might burn closer between 1900 and 2000 calories a day at the same fitness level. There is MUCH more wiggle room both in food and exercise which is why these plans work best out of the box for people of those heights. Yes, those extra inches make a big difference.
You cannot brute force your health. It will catch up to you sooner or later.

I’m 5’2″ and consuming 1400 cal per day, and I have been doing your beginners week program. I have to admit though, part of my calorie consumption is 2 glasses of chardonnay a day. I love a glass or two of wine after a long day! But I wonder, how much does it REALLY hold me back from progress? Do you have any insight? I’m a registered dietitian and this does not look healthy at all to me. No enough vegetables, too much cholesterol in the shrimp, too much meat (that’s 4 servings at least and I generally recommend 2 to maybe 3), don’t recommend sweetened yogurt at all. Plus shrimp are bottom feeders so they can contain a lot of toxic chemicals. You should eat vegetables with at least two meals a day and more than a measly amount. I also do not recommend bread or processed grains for anyone looking to lose weight. Oatmeal and quinoa are perfect though for carbs.
What about gymnasts? They are petite and do a similar body weight only type of conditioning. They don’t do any cardio. They just use their own body weight for the skills they do and no weights. They are very lean and very muscular. I think when it just comes down to it is that petite women are just simply sometimes built stockier than other women ( and nothing wrong with that) and no matter what exercise(s) you do it is simply your muscle /fat genetic homeostatic composition. The body likes to stay where it’s comfortable. You will just never be thin/skinny and that’s ok! That’s not exactly the only kind of great figure out there. Just curious, did you ever get a thyroid (TSH) test done?
From a fitness background I can say no that is NOT enough food for any adult, especially for anyone who is exercising a decent amount and wants to gain curves and muscle. Her body is straight up and down with no curves tiny butt and no legs… and she is on this strict diet. dieting is not the answer.
To people who love fast food take note that’s the healthy food

your insecurities jump out in this videoespecially the part about “Australian tall model” which if you did research Kayla is a shirt girl and not a model. she teaches ladies to be strong and if you looked further then her older program you would see her growth. she’s being a trainer longer then you and has many more programs on sweat beside “BBG”. you should have gone deeper or tried it again. also it nowhere states to do the HIIT workouts 7 days a week. It’s says to do them around 3 or 2 and the rest is just walking or running which is fine and healthy. if you wanted something with more weights you could have got the app and swapped the program. don’t blame this on your height because you were too hungryjust try make more balanced meals and I don’t believe you would have being eating from her meal plan either, where she promotes healthy but reasonable/affordable meals.
to be fair bbg only has the “hiit” style training 3 times a week (not 6-7 times like you stated); you do LISS the rest of the time, which is “low intensity” cardio (and is incredibly good for your cardiovascular system and to recover from the tougher workouts!) you’re not meant to go hard on those days (4/7!) also, yes bodyweight work has its limits, but in this program you ARE building total body strength! the average person will get significantly stronger e.g even being able to do 15-20 full push ups requires a lot of upper body and core strength! & plyometrics also obviously strengthen muscles… hypertrophy-style training isn’t the be all and end all when it comes to building strength, fitness and improving overall health:))

easiest cheap and healthy meal: 1/2 can black beans, 1 can corn, 1 onion, 1 clove garlic, 1 tsp cumin, 1 tsp paprika and any other veggies. Fry onions and veg in a frying pan, add spices and rinsed beans and corn and heat through. Serve with baked potatoes, sweet potatoes, in tacos, on couscous, rice or anything else you fancy

i think she is too skinny. normal person can not achieve that body and also dont need to. i think normal body shape is ten kg more at least. she is doing this as a job, its not posible and not needed to maintain that shape and diet for an average woman. also its not reasonable to eat five meals a day. its not possible to carry round all these boxes. other option is to buy food in plastix which is bad for envrionment. so three meals a day is the way. also for teeth…. also people who have no idea how much energy is in portions and foods need to read calories. to learn what is normal portion sizes and realize why they got so fat. its educating. at some point you dont need to calculate energy anymore but its important to do that to learn about how much calories different foods consist of
Her body isn’t ideal so Its surprising she’s so popular. She has pencil thin legs with no leg muscles or shape. Even basic leg exercises over time would build some quads. Boxy stomach without any shape. What is with this diet… even a small child requires more food than that. It’s no wonder she’s so underweight without much shape. Bad advice for women

But my biggest question is, are the ingredients for each recipe things you can go to the average grocery store for or would I have to seek out organic markets that sell your not so average veggies and herbs? As a student on a budget I try to not break the bank with special food ingredients.

From what I’ve seen there’s a lot of jumping in her workouts. I’m unable to jump like that. No jumping squats or anything due to a horrible old hip injury I got when I was barely 19 yrs old.

Aim to eat 1300-1500 calories as you will never eat exactly the number of calories you want and by doing this you will eat around 1400. You will lose a pound a week. Don’t cut carbs, eat what you want! I don’t see why people think it is unhealthy to count calories? It is the best thing for me and it works and makes me happy to easily lose 1 pound a week. I don’t look at the scale and say that’s what I’m worth.

Your diet and exercise plan depends on your goaldo you want to lose weight? do you want to gain muscle? tailor your diet and exercise plan around your goal and you can achieve it! This is a fairly general plan, and probably not meant for super super fit people who lift weights and train for a majority of the day, but probably better suited for beginners who aren’t doing very high intensity workouts. Will this plan work the same way for 100% of the people who try it? Probably not, because we all have different bodies, different metabolic rates, different genetics etc. Overall though, 1600-1800 calories a day is NOT an unhealthily low amount. Besides, it all depends on what exactly those calories are coming from. Eating 1600-1800 calories of butter (yes, an exaggeration) is completely different from eating 1600 to 1800 calories of a balanced diet, which is why I agree with Kayla on the whole calorie counting thing (speaking from personal experience where at one point I ate no more than 800 calories a day). I think her biggest goal it to promote a healthy lifestyle (hence the title) and give people that initial push (28 days!) they need to start changing their mindset and behaviors in order to pursue a more healthy lifestyle. Once you get over the 28 day hump, you can start focusing on more concrete goals in terms of diet and exercise and alter your plans then! Overall, I think it’s great what she’s doing!
I love the bbg program. I only do the strength training and skip cardio. If I add cardio I have to eat sooo much, it’s not funny anymore. So this is my 2nd time doing the program, doing it 2-3 times a week, on week 10 now. I really start seeing and feeling results and getting stronger. Especially my legs feel so much tighter and getting more shape, even the skin is smoother. For reference, I’m 170cm/62kg/31yr

Five meals per day is bullshit. A human does not need to put something in their stomach constantly. It is NOT scientifically supported and not how we have been designed by nature. Just have like 2 meals a days but bigger in size, so you feel satiated and not constantly stressed because you are hungry all the time.

I literally loathe it when certain fitness girls label a workout as ‘long lean legs’. I’m 5ft zero and I have thick-set legs. I’m never going to have long lean legs. My friend was doing a workout religiously because the YouTuber had labelled it something like, ‘Get legs like Kendall Jenner’ and was upset because she didn’t get legs like Kendall. I had to sit her down and explain the math.

It obviously worked 4 u but I didnt lose weight until I didnt eat so mzny min8 meals. It spikes your insulin no matter what u eat a Dr said only 2 or 3 meals then I lost weight most low carb meaks but some frappes too. I couldnt believe I lost 10 pounds then 14 not earing perfectly some interment fasting by accident at first.
I could not make the two weeks. The problem for me was all the jumping and my joins started to hurt really bad. I had so many problems with my feet and the program was really stressing me out

We definitely need more fitness gurus in their 30s, 40s, and beyond. I was in amazing shape in my 20s and did barely anything to be that way. That changed in my mid 30s. What you need to do in your 20s to stay fit is significantly different than your 30s, 40s, and 50s. Does anyone know of a female fitness guru in her 40s?

Fantastic. A personal trainer who doesn’t personally train anyone, just an Instagram star thanks to obviously figuring out how to be one of the first to build a social media following? This is why there are CHEK certifications etc which separates us from the likes of this beginner stuff. Ask her to name the 4 joints of the shoulder wouldn’t have a clue. It is a shame we don’t have a human race who is more demanding and meticulous at to where they receive their information. Pictures and bikinis?? Anyone can do that.

That is actually a lot of food. You all may be used to eating larger portions but in reality our stomach is smaller than those quarter pounders from McDonald’s. A person should only eat a meal about the size of their own fist. You should also be drinking 8 oz of water before and after the meal. It is all in your mind, which is stronger than what you think.
I actually paid for BBG for a year and the irony of this video so crazy because it explains so much. I thought it was just me not being able to control myself when it came to eating. I do her 3 workouts plus walking or HIIT on two other days so everything you said I relate to because I see a little muscle forming but I still have a gut because I can’t control the cravings!! I paid for the program until next April so I’m not sure what I’ll do. I may just two do of her “resistance” days and try to incorporate just regular weight training on two other days from an at home plan I have. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Kinda mad I wasted that money loll I thought I was doing myself a favor because I knew paying in full would make me more committed. But I also don’t wanna waste any more time because I want to see a difference in my body. I already love you so much!

I don’t get why people don’t want to put more effort into their health, resorting to a book some 25-year-old wrote. It doesn’t take that much to learn about basic weight training, cardio is super straight forward and macros really aren’t that difficult to understand if you want to take it a step further learn about how micronutrients unlock energy. For someone who’s a fitness professional, she is very underwhelming in terms of her own fitness.
I hate the same thing all these “fitness gurus” say which is that they don’t want people counting calories, viewing food in an unhealthy way (meaning looking at it for nutritional value) or chasing a scale number. You SHOULD look at food as fuel and it is okay to indulge in tasty treats here and there and find tasty food which is also macro and micronutrient friendly. A truly healthy diet and exceptional training will make you more alert, positive, energetic and focused. If it was a drug it would be the most heavily bought drug in the US…. what she is selling isn’t going to maximize the benefits of exercise, it’s just to feed the insecure egos of fat women who want to look like a stick.

Hi! Thank you for this review, it was very helpful. I recently broke my ankle (and part of my leg) and have been unable to find any good workouts that I can do without my leg while I am injured. Does her book offer any options for those who are injured or do you have any suggestions for workout plans that do?
