Hiking vs. Walking. There are many elements that people use to judge whether they are hiking or simply walking. For example, many hikers don’t want to walk in urban areas, suburbs, city parks, or even along country roads.
They want a completely natural setting.Hiking vs Walking. Walking is one activity that is known to all of us as it is the only form of locomotion that we use to move around. It is different from running in the sense that it is relaxed and does not require us to put in any special effort to move from one place to another.Hiking is similar to walking in that you are moving your legs and going places. However, the distinction is that hiking is when you are walking through a natural scenery or on a mountain.
Hiking mostly takes place in mountainous or hilly areas forests, mountains, and reserved parks.Hiking and walking differ from the path the person takes. Hiking obviously involves walking. However, when you hike, it means you are walking from a lower elevation to a higher elevation. On the other hand, when you walk, it means that you are only trekking a relatively smooth and flat path without too many hurdles.
Walking has a more urban connotation and it involves moving forward on a hard surface such as asphalt, gravel or concrete. Hiking is done in nature on uneven and bumpy ground. It is normally done in the countryside, on hills, in the mountains or in natural parks. There is no incline when walking and the exercise is constant from beginning to end.The small obstacles you are describing are pretty normal and would barely add any extra calories over walking flat hard surface.
The hiking input is quite a bit higher and is meant for off road on more challenging terrain.Because walking is by definition slow, it is inherently difficult to elevate your heart rate as much walking as it is biking. However, one of the major differences between walking and cycling is the ability to coast on the bike. If pedaling hard for a few minutes and then coasting, cycling becomes more of an interval workout that can mask how much cardio work your body is actually performing.
Speed and power walking vs. running. Speed walking is walking at a brisk pace, usually 3 mph or greater. Your heart rate is elevated during speed walking.However, the calorie burn could be the same whether you were walking or hiking uphill. Great vid! About the disc bulge causing lateral tilt where you mentioned you won’t go into detail how does that cause the tilt exactly and what can be done to bring the affected side back to a normal position?
I got this and I also suffer from benign fasciculation syndrome and I notice that my left leg will always have more fasciculations when my pelvis is out of whack. The chiropractor will fix it but it always comes back within few weeks.

hi there i re-sprained my left ankle just recently and i am wearing an ace bandage that I got from my PCP. Is that normal or should i be wearing something different? I dont do sports, I do a lot of walking and my balance and vision arent the best..
What do you recommend for outside ankle pain along with topside pain? Uneven surfaces bother me. My foot doctor said it’s most likely arthritis.
So Bob wouldn’t recommend the regular slip-on tube braces that you get from the sports store at all? I’ve recently started wearing them just for the compression. I do find them helpful against general sports fatigue.

I love the ASO…Is that what you called the white brace? Thank you for showing me why it works. My ankle was like a mushroom grew on the lateral… But the following week, the swelling increases over the top of the foot… And that’s when it became impossible to walk without pain… I heard that gravity and my foot being without a caste for 5 days until I got the amazing ASO:). And this caste helps e move with crutches. I can sleep because the pain is no longer excruciating…Went from a 6.5 or 7 down to a 1.5…. Wow.:). Yey ASO… But the swelling over the top of my foot. That started in the mornings and my doctor suggested the elevation wasn’t high enough so I added another pillow a thick one….But I was walking last week and I’m on crutches now

Forefoot walker right here. I’m also quite tall and always leaning a bit towards the front even when standing still. I’ve tried to consciously correct it but I always revert to it as my usual posture. Uff…

Thank you for these videos. I am understanding my injuries. In this video or one of the others you mention NOT to constantly wear an ankle brace, which makes sense. But I have a question. Since I was 18 (many years ago) I have constantly wore army style boots during any of my shift work of 8 -12 hours a day. Early on I wore tennis shoes when I wasn’t working but as years have gone by, last 20 years, I have switched completely to boots, hiking boots now days. My Question is since one should not wear the ankle brace due to weakening the ankle is that the same for wearing boots constantly? My instances of ankle sprains seem to be getting more frequent.
Its hard to start walking correctly again trust me and it lowers your confidence. You need 2 to 3 hours of practice to get the perfect walk

make sure you are activating or pushing from you’re butcheeks and not ur quads, so when you are walking place you’re hand on ur quads if they are tight while walking this is not good. you’re butcheeks should do 70% of the work. you will never get rid of tight quads/hamstirng/calves when you are not using ur butcheeks while walking. Bad english.

I’ve replaced my easy runs for uphill power hiking and im finding its a lot better than purely high mileage easy miles… then I do my usual high intensity stuff running. The other option is the easy runs / hours….and i find things break down if i do that with the fast days.

You guys I have disc bulge and starting getting this about a year in!!! My physio thought it was scoliosis.
I try pushing my pelvis in away from the tilt, but I get leg symptomes. I feel my body did this to prevent pain in my right leg, but I feet that it might cause issues later on… My chiro has me wear a heal raise, I guess it helps a bit. It’s maybe a bit better.
I don’t know how long I’m stuck with this. I feel that as long as the herniation is there, the tilt is there….. Is this worth surgery (micro-d or ADR)?

Hi! I was just wondering if you could help me with figuring out how my hip is tilted? I have piriformis syndrome in my right hip (I get numbness in my right leg and the foot rotates outward. I’ve had my spine checked etc). My right hip seems to pop to the side more making it look more round and my pelvis isn’t levelled. I’m sure one of the sides rotates backwards. You mention that one side of pelvis can rotate forward, but is it possible that the periformis affected side is rotated backwards? Thank you for all the useful videos!!

Agree with everything they said except wearing running shoes with arch support. These are coffins for your feet. Wear bear foot/minimalist shoes like Vivos or Vibrams, these will aid your foot regaining its true strength and development.
Great video, but running shoes have too large of a cushion in the heel to allow you to toe strike at all. They also stabilize your foot so much that muscles to your ankle and foot atrophy
I had chronoc pain for 2 years, o was in servere pain for every second of everyday i got diagnosed with fibromyalgia snd the doctor told me i would be in pain my whole life i went to doctor after doctor and they told me its all in my head nothings wrong.
A Month ago i visited a highly educated chriopractor whoch found out i had lateral pelvic tilt and lots of pinched nerves and now all that pain is gone just in a month, still cant belive it.. doctors are dangerous and im still traumatized by it all

I’m experiencing some problems when I do squats.
I went to a chiro and my pelvis is rotated and tilted. The right side appears slightly in front (if viewed from above) and it is higher. The weird thing is that she didn’t see any leg length discrepancy (LLD), but I think she is wrong!
I’ve tried mobility work before I do squats at the gym but it is not helping. I think this suggests that it is an anatomically difference, such as a LLD. Because you can’t fix a short leg by doing mobility work. This seems to be the most logical, but is it correct?
I experimented and put a 1 cm shim under my left foot and it stops the pelvis from rotating counter-clockwise. I eyeballed and measured myself and without the shim it certainly looks like the left side of my pelvis is about 1 cm lower than the right.

I’ve been reading that an ankle sprain never completely heals because the ligament is permanently stretched. Does that mean that I should be looking at taping my ankle or wearing a brace when I run for the rest of my life? At what point should I consider my ankle healed?
Hi guys, Also, people have a tendency to not flex at the hips when they walk, which promotes that straight legged gait. So lifting the leg at the hips with each step (exaggerating this as if marching can help develop this more proper gait) puts the foot in a better position when it hits the ground.

How does one walk quickly with the knee bent at full extension and forefoot and heel striking nearly simultaneously? I’ve switched to zero drop minimalist shoes (barefoot runners) to limit my natural outward ankle roll in part caused by my otc orthotics. I am currently awaiting the delivery of custom orthotics, hoping that they help with my everyday foot pain. I’m a 66 year old, 205 lb. person who works standing up at least 90% of every 8 hour day at a work station. Walking all day, for me, an avid long distance hiker, is far less painful than a day at work. Why would that be?

Hi, Bob and Brad what kind of brace do u prescribe for people who had a stroke and they do not have any movement in the ankle and but used to mobilize with 4point stick. Injured her ankle after a fall. No fracture no dislocation but when testing for ankle instability it looked like grade 2 strain. And she is always on AFO. so what kind of brace do u suggest and a little bit of help with management. thank you.
Love your videos. Does the first one come in different sizes? If not, I wear 4.5 shoe size and it is not chubby, therefore have trouble finding a brace or wrap that is small enough, but gives support. What is your recommendation?

Bob and Brad I fell yesterday down some garage steps and turned my ankle with an inversion sprain on the cement. The other foot has chronic plantar fasciitis from many years of road marching in the Army with 50 lbs on my back. I will be putting weight on the foot with plantar fasciitis. My question is: should there be pain in the heel of a sprained ankle as well when putting weight on it?

Can you do a video on the walking.my daughter is 7 yrs old and has been walking on her toes ever since she started walking.I started getting her treatment for this when I realized at 4yrs old she really was not walking normally. They diagnosed her with idiopathic toe walking.They started her with casting her legs for a month then o shoe insert that she wears during the day and a night splint for her to sleep in.They did two rounds of castings pt after.There was little improvement after that but she is currently still walking on her toes at 7yrs old.She just started pt again.Btw there are quite a few kids walking on there toes that are not babies.Thanks in advance for your response.
Listening to this magical song in 2020 allows me to escape the bullshit that all corners of the globe are currently experiencing. I like those flexible minimalist very thin sole toe shoes that have a toe pocket for each toe. I can feel the earth beneath my feet in them and it releases negative energy and I get energy from the ground. I also do not trip or fall in toe shoes as my toes can spread and add extra balance. It helps knees, pressure points in the foot, and helps hips and ankles because shoes with heels control a person’s walk in a more rigid way and cause pronation. I have not had pronation at all since using the toe shoes and I can control the articulation in joints and redirect the articulation to correct any irritation.

I was an athlete and ended up with a fusion on my left ankle from a pretty bad break in 2011 and having a lot of body weight and still very active athletically, am now experiencing a lot of pain in my foot and fused ankle. Thank you for the video. I was born with the right leg shorter than the left by 3/4 of an inch. Never really had a problem with it beside discomfort standing. I’ve sprained my right ankle over 10 times. It broke a couple years ago. Had another sprain last week. I need a daily wear preventative. There’s obviously instability and this is walking on flat surfaces.
Chi walking is similar to the way children walk and is best… And I suggest 30 to 40 percent or less heel strike is better at preventing low back pain. Shoes weaken the ankles, knees and hips and cause low back pain. Spend several hours a day walking in barefoot style shoes or socks if you can’t go full barefoot and stretch daily for full range of motion.
My feet are in pain 1 hour in of active walking.( burning, heel pain, arch pain, behind the knee pain) Ex working at home depot. Im young(25) and i feel like I should feel this way. I’m hoping this helps. I’ll look into more of your videos thank you

Get rid off the pounds/kilos
Eat one third of what you were eating before and eat your main meal early not late, for example dinner no later than 5PM!
Cut back on carbs and go for protein rich meat such as skinless chicken breasts and tuna!!
Lots of fruit and vegetables, stir fry s lots of water!
Sore heels pinched nerves blood pressure, dizzy spells, dehydration tiredness fatigue,vision diabetes are all symptoms of obesity and overweight!!
Look good feel good walk 12000 steps per day and pump some iron.
Cut right back on calories!
Nearly all the above mentioned problems will go away I guarantee it!!

El tiene pelvis oblicua debido a una cojera que tuvo por 2 años por una displasia de cadera (epifisiolistesis del hueso femoral izquierdo) pero ya lo operaron y quedo bien pero le quedo la pelvis oblicua (inclinación pélvica lateral izquierda)
A él lo operaron del lado izquierdo epifisiolistesis del hueso femoral izquierdo pero después de la operación la pelvis se le elevo mas alta del lado derecho produciendo así un falso alargamiento de la pierna izquierda que lo hace andar cojeando.
¿Que debo hacer para volverlas a alinearle la pelvis?, gracias les agradezco la ayuda que puedan prestarme

I had this when I was 10 years old.
It was undiagnosed for over 8 years.
When I turned 18 it was just unbearable to the point I could not stand.
I sprained my ankle 2.5 weeks ago. I had widespread bruising and swelling. I was not able to walk on it initially, but 3 days later I could with some sensitivity. i did rice the whole next day and have been heating in the am, doing ice at night, and wearing an air cast daily until it’s stronger. its been feeling great so I started light exercise and stretching this week. I continue to ice each night and elevating at bedtime. the stretches(as shown in your other video)Today, 2.5 weeks later I returned to softball. I just DH today and took a runner I jogged from the batter’s box to first base I had no pain. I’m going to look into one of those ASO wraps to continue about my season. I guess my question really is did I have a grade 1 or 2 sprain and based on the rehabilitation that I’ve been doing in my Mobility today.

I have a stress fracture, Matarsal 2,3 and 4. I am 5 month out, still quite painful to walk, hurts all the time when walking. No pain while at rest.
Funny thing is that the greatest part of the pain is in my Big toe area, of metatarsal and the bone 5th toe metatarsal lateral area, and the how bottom of my foot.
I need help! What Can I do? Thinking in see a PT outpatient… what should I expect as treatment?

In fourth grade I play four basketball games on a sprained ankle I hurt it the first game ever since I wear a brace when I play then this year I’m in sixth I didn’t wear my brace one time and I fractured my growth plate in my ankle and I just got my boot off

i’m going back to work as a delivery driver in a couple weeks after getting a grade 3 high ankle sprain. I do about 15,000 steps a day at work so good thing I learned from you guys what kind of brace to get. I was just gonna get one of those for a grade 1 sprain but now i’m educated.

I sprained the inside of my ankle and i think it turned into posterior tibialis tendonitis (or whatever it is called) and i recently saw a video you guys made on the “hop test” and “jump test” for returning to activity. I passed the hop test with almost 100% on all 3. But the jump test i am about 20 inches less in my jump with the bad foot because it is too painful to push off hard. What does this mean? Is it ok for me to start running again but just not play the actual sport?
Hi Bob and Brad. I am confused as I read that you should NOT use an ankle brace during rehab or sports activities because it puts too much strain and could cause injury to the knee if you immobilize the ankle joint. Is this true?

What do you guys think about the Trilock ankle brace? For many many years I have used an ASO brace since my surgery. I tore all three of those ligaments you have referred to in other you’re othe video. They took a pice of tendon out of the side of my leg drilled some holes and threaded the tendon threw the holes. What helped me, mentally, to walk more evenly on my feet, was to imagine that I was walking up a level flight of stairs, if that makes sense, haha. Helps a lot in getting the glutes engaged too.

Ok. I’m here because I was diagnosed with plantar fasciitis and in addition I have tendonitis in my left ankle. I’ve had pain for years but only when under extreme stress, say from walking everyday. Even that alone causes me to be in severe pain but it’s more of a build up.
So over time it gets worse.
Before I had the MRI to explain what it is I would just avoid being on my feet regularly.
I have a black aso but I don’t know how to put on.
I actually came here to see if you had the brace I had and you guys do.
Is this good for me with tendonitis?

This really bums me out because I’m very physically active. I live in NY and I play what’s called handball but it’s official name is wallball. It’s the only athletic passion that I have. Other than I just want to be normal. I can’t perform standing jobs and at times it can be very debilitating.

I have lateral pelvic tilt from a deadlift injury, I deadlifted wrong and I felt a shock of electricity go from my right butt check to bottom of my right side of my skull. Know I feel a little bone popping out a little bit above my right side of my pelvis. Can anything I can do home help me become symmetrical again?

Finally i started walking bare foot for 1 hr daily and my planter fascities cured day 1 itself.
I’d like to know more about the SI joint causing this. My pt says that shouldn’t move, that the ligaments are too strong, my chiro says it should move a little. Along with pain in the SI area, I’ve been feeling the top of my body doesn’t line up with my pelvis and down, so I pull on my pelvis and hear a pop. Yesterday my chiro said one leg was an inch higher so she adjusted my hips. How can one leg be higher if the SI joint doesn’t move?

It’s gonna be hard to retrain myself to walk I walk fast and big strides I think I’m walking pretty flat but I have plantar fasciitis in my right foot it hurts I walk in surfaces 4 to 5 hours 5 days a week including stairs
If you have an innominent rotation making that side of the pelvis higher, which way is it rotated? Anterior or posterior to make it higher?

Thanks for the video, on a trip to Rome in April I sprained my ankle. Got no treatment just told to RICE and it would be fine in a fortnight. Well it was not fine I still could not walk on it. I caused my ankle to point like a ballerina (this was my left ankle) & have it turn a bit to the right (my right) bc some reason I felt like I needed to pop my ankle & it did pop. But after tht my tendon feels like it can easily move when I walk..it isn’t an enjoyable feeling. It doesn’t hurt & it isn’t wobbly it’s just a very sensitive feeling. Also the tendon looks & feels (I touch with my fingers) like kinda out of place or not that smushed y’know? Tendon pops just a tiny bit more out then my regular right ankle
