Calories In Vs Calories Out Is WRONG (The TRUTH)
Video taken from the channel: Shelley Darlington
The “calories in versus calories out” model is based on the idea that to maintain a stable weight, the number of calories you eat needs to match the number you expend. Here’s the basic equation: Calories In MINUS Calories Out = Energy Balance. When it comes to fat loss, you want to create a negative energy balance — also known as a calorie deficit. When you create a negative calorie balance/calorie deficit, your body will burn your stored fat for energy.
If you take consume more food than you need (calories in), the excess calories turn into extra weight. But if you burn more calories than you consume (calories out), you burn stored body fat for energy and you lose weight.Because, when “Calories In” is equal to “Calories Out,” it means you are at your calorie maintenance level. And it’s your calorie maintenance level that is the starting point for figuring out exactly what your daily calorie intake should be in order for you to reach your goal and make your body do what you want it to do.
Calories Out. The total number of calories you expend per day, also referred to as your total daily energy expenditure (TDEE), goes far beyond your exercise habits. Basal metabolic rate: Your basal metabolic rate (BMR) refers to the number of calories you burn at rest if you lie in bed for 24 hours. These calories are expended to carry out.
Perhaps, after all, calories-in vs. calories-out is not the ultimate determinant of long-term body weight. Lets put some of it to rest right now. It is a fundamental law that you need a positive or negative energy (i.e. calorie) balance over time to gain or lose bodily tissues (e.g. muscle, fat).It does not, nor does it attempt to explain the metabolic differences between individuals or group types of individuals.
Calories in = calories out only says for a given individual, (constraining all other variables) increasing calories results in weight gain, and reducing calories results in weight loss.1 day ago · IF is basically favorable for the way you feel with fasting not much for losing weight no one knows when the body decides the weekly calorie intake vs outtake so say that day you havent ate yet and its does its energy consumption which converts to gain or loss. if you havent ate youd loss that weight so thats why bro science think you lose more weight on it.This calorie calculator estimates the number of calories needed each day to maintain, lose, or gain weight. Why do people avoid carbs if the amount of calories is the only difference in weight gain or loss? This question was originally answered on Quora by Bart Loews.A calorie” of a food is actually called a kilocalorie, so the kilocalories you see burned on a heart rate monitor are 1:1 equivalent to the calories you eat in food.Confused about calories in vs out. Hypothetically, if my TDEE is 1800 calories and I eat 1800 calories, do I have a net calorie of 0? Or do I have to actively burn those 1800 calories?

Sort by.Calorie in is referred to the number of calories you get from the food you eat, while calorie out is the number of calories you burn. Food is the only source of calories intake. Different food items contain different amounts of calories. But our body burns those calories in 3 different way.
Calories in vs. calories out. We’ve all heard that this simple equation is the key to getting a lean, hard body. And that substituting lower-calorie foods for high-calorie options is.To help you gauge whether you’re on track to hit your calorie deficit, Fitbit also provides a Calories In vs. Calories Out meter.
This real-time calculation takes the following information into account: your calorie deficit, how many calories you’ve eaten, how many calories you’ve burned, and the time of.

I put on alot of lbs over the years. I started counting calories on mfp. I set it to lose 2 lbs a week. I eat out everyday twice. That’s the only food I eat. At a rsstaurant. Big hearty meals, but with no rolls buns or bread, and no sweet tea. Only water and diet drinks because there’s no calories. If i get a burger I only eat the meat and toppings. I started just walking for exercise each day for a hour or a hour and a half. In a month, I lost 15 lbs. That’s with eating burger meat and fried chicken mostly. I feel great. My energy is up and I don’t get hungry because I’m eating 700 to 1000 cals a meal, twice a day, lunch and dinner. I only take a few vitamins for breakfadt and dont care to wake early to eat breakfast. It might not sound healthy but I’m set at 1900 cals and am under many days. On days when I might go over I just walk a little extra to get more calories. It works for me so far. But like u guys talk about, I’m not getting leaner I don’t think. But I am shrinking and getting smaller which is all in worried about right now
So 3500 calories doesn’t equate to 1 pound? I know for me personally, if I eat processed foods or really high carbs like over 70g net I won’t lose. I’m 5’1 and get really full on 1300 cals a day high fiber
16:05 What you showed is a bomb calorimeter. There are different types of calorimeters and they are used to measure an energy change in chemical reactions, including the very same reactions than in your body. https://www.thoughtco.com/definition-of-calorimeter-in-chemistry-604397 Sure, in your body the reactions are catalyzed by enzymes, but calorimetry can also be used to measure enzyme thermodynamics. For example isothermal titration calorimetry: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isothermal_titration_calorimetry Ironically calorimetry is a method by which it could be calculated just how much did you “glow” when you ate your lunch. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/7451/ You pretty much disprove yourself after 16:35 by explaining how everything you put in you comes out in one form or another. If you claimed anything else, you’d be violating the thermodynamics.
Hi Sean pls make a video about prolonged fasting (72hour) in term of fat loss vs muscle loss
It is misleading because if you count calories according to the nutritional content labels then it won’t be correct.
If you define it the “opposite way” (caloric deficit = fat loss and not the numbers you read on labels) then of course it is true but it is basically unusable as you can not calculate what your deficit would be. The only way to find a caloric intake number would be trial and error and that would be based on what you eat and other things.
So what is the point?
Best Ways to Cut 100 Calories
Breakfast:
Skip the large glass of orange juice and have an orange instead.
Never eat a whole bagel, ½ is more than enough.
You don’t need over a cup of oatmeal, try ½ a cup instead.
Have eggs without the toast.
Keep in mind every packet of sugar in your coffee is 10 empty calories.
25 minutes of absolute nonsense. You are exactly what is wrong with the fitness industry. Deluded beyond belief. Learn your craft or get out the industry.
question: How do you effectively bulk on bro foods? my meaning is for an example if I eat brown rice/sweet potato for carbs. grilled chicken breast/ tuna for protein with brocolli these foods are relatively low calories compared with bulking with pizza. burgers. hot dogs etc. So this means you have to consume more foods in order to make your caloric goal each day. so its tougher to bulk on clean foods right?
Good stuff, fasting question…. does sugar free gum break the fast?
Hey Sean, so 0.8 grams of protein is really all that is needed to build and maintain muscle? I weigh 162lbs. and I am currently cutting to 10% body fat before bulking. I have been trying to get 1 gram of protein per pound of bodyweight, but would definitely eat less if there is really no benefit to eating more than.8 grams. Thoughts?
Guys this is easy. If you make more money than you spend, your bank account grows. If you spend more than you make, you go into debt. This is the same with calories and body weight.
I know I keep saying this, but damn Sean is back at it again with the absolutely no-BS content. Nowadays that info is worth its weight in gold given how much crap is being sold by influencers.
Your diet affects your glandular system in different ways…in developed belly fat love handles or man boobs and subcutaneous fat!
Hey baby hey baby are you going to lat me work out with you baby
Making a habit of eating “clean” healthy food day in and day out is the key.
Great to see you guys together! I listen to Mike’s podcast as well. Cheers to healthy living!
First at all I want to thanks you 2 for the video.
I want to know if my brother whom has Cushing’s syndrome and osteoporosis can started with a ketogenic diet?
Do you have a particular advice for him?
Many thanks in advance ♀️
If I’m on 2500 calories I get myself 120-140g of protein and eat:
Breakfast (post gym) 4 eggs and PB toast (550 kcal)
Lunch 1 Pan fried chicken breast and brown rice (400 kcal)
Lunch 2 Chicken breast (baked) and vegetables (200 kcal)
Dinner Steak and potatoes (400 kcal)
Snack Cottage Cheese (300 kcal) if I need protein or an Avacado if I need fats (400 kcal)
Snack Fruit (150 kcal)
total: 2000/2100
then I just eat whatever the fuck I want to eat for 400 kcal. It means I have a diet mostly filled with bro foods but I get some enjoyment (be it an ice cream, oreos or whatever) daily.
Thanks for discussing about this topic!
It’s soooo confusing for the public as well, when there are ‘experts’ keeping saying CICO is not true:(((
https://medium.com/@drjasonfung/counting-calories-is-a-ridiculous-way-to-try-to-lose-weight-beae03cd1c46
So you should count cour carbs if you’re diabetic and count your calories to lose weight?
I did freeze when I started Keto + OMAD the first and second week. Now (it can be that its summer) but the coldness is gone compleltly.
I don’t care how much bs comes out of this woman’s mouth, she’s still fit af
There are a lot of men in the comments attempting to tear down what she is saying, because it isnt how THEY do it despite the fact that she specifically addressed specifically bodybuilders, as exceptions to the advise she’s giving on calorie counting. You claim she’s an idiot and doesn’t know what she is talking about because she doesn’t have degrees, however nutritionists like Dariush Mozaffarian (Dean of Friedman school of nutrition science and policy at Tufts & Kelly LeVeque) both of whom have degrees in nutritionagree with her on this. No one said if you’re counting calories and it’s working for you, stop. The fact is that it’s not for everyone, it doesn’t foster a healthy relationship with food for everyone, she clearly states that this advice is for those people.
It’d be great if someone could respond to this. I don’t have a gym near me or anything and so I made my own plan at home with some dumbbell usage. So my plan is Saturday and Monday is pushups and abs, ranging from 1-2hrs, but a must of over 1,500 pushups to failure and abs are my rests for pushups. Sunday and Tuesday are my leg days with dumbbells for squatting, deadlifting, and lunches, also abs for rests. Wednesday and Thursday are shoulders, biceps, and abs again. Fridays are my rest days with abs at night. For all these exercises I typically go to failure or close to failure, but my calories consumptions are over the roof with perhaps 500 calories? I was on a deficit for about 2 years and I got down to an 8% BF. Now it’s hard for me to eat, since I somehow have a huge appetite and my body doesn’t know when it’s full. Are these exercises too much or too little for the amount of calories I’m eating?
As always, excellent content Sean. we can always rely on you for the truth and a no B.S. approach for maximum results.

People who say it doesn’t matter don’t understand what’s being said. We lose fat, maintain, or gain depending on energy balance over time. The influences of each side of the equation is what is being misunderstood. Not all calories (food) is the same and “these guys” aren’t saying that.
Wow I already was on to this but wasn’t quite sure it’s not too much info out there on this I thought you just count carbs and you can eat all the protein you want lol
Hello Shelley! Greg sent me to have a few words about thermodynamics…
Hi! So I have a question. Idk if you’ve read it before, but this book I read by Dr. Philp Goglia “Turn Up the Heat: Unlock the Fat-Burning Power of Your Metabolism” and he basically went into detail about how going into a calorie deficient diet isn’t necessary and that by speeding up your metabolism through having more nutrient-dense meals and getting your metabolic heat to rise, you can not be in a calorie deficient and still burn fat. Could you maybe review the book, and clear up some of his claims for me? Thank you again!!!
Fuel in, fuel out, right? A vehicle can’t run on every type of fuel, some fuels are better for different vehicles. Try swapping diesel with gasoline, the vehicle WILL RUN like a turd. Humans are more complicated. Not all calorie sources are equal. Calories in, calories out is even more absurd.
What’s wrong with the cameraman? Really like the content but i want people to actually look into the camera instead of seeing them talking from a side angle. So weird!
Sooo many triggered and annoying people coming from Greg Doucette’s video… imagine wasting your time to spread hate in a comment section without even listening to what she’ s saying. Just because someone said that she’s wrong, that doesn’t mean you have to come here as a brainless animal that can only copy and paste. If you don’t agree, go and find a video that you agree with and stick with that channel. Nobody needs your opinion unless you have something original and interesting to say.
I know I’m late, but I needed to say this. Because she’s right, you shouldn’t be obsessed over calories counting, you should focus on eating healthy and providing your body with the nutrients it needs
The reason this is all a hard pill to swallow for so many is because of the sheer amount of lazy people who refuse to count calories. For whatever reason it’s like mission impossible for a good majority.
When you say, “YOU DO WHAT EVER THE FUCK YOU WANT TO DO” it makes me feel like you don’t care about me.
How many calories should a male 5 foot 8…….weight 343 lbs eat a day?
Reply 1
It comes down to a persons habits though some think… Ah I’ll eat a few peanuts….. Ends up eating 200grams peanuts + “normal” meals…. Bread pasta, pizza, etc. And they’re quickly over 2500kcal it’s true when U throw away processed carbs it’s even hard to eat 1500kcal of normal food so I’d say yes in the beginning before u change your habits it makes sense to track and count until you figure it out…. Then when U know what are like caloric bombs…. U just avoid those.:)
You are SO knowledgeable on fitness and I want to let you know that you’re literally the ONLY fitness person that I watch and trust. Ps can you please make a video on meal ideas that’s low in carb and high in fats?
Good point that’s why I notice this “net carbs” labels on many foods. They are trying to convince people they can eat more of it lol
it’s going opposite for me, for example when I ate salad and salmon I will get hungry again in no time, but when I ate one McDonald cheese burger and light cola I will get full for hours.
Sean. You have great hair. That style looks great on you. You look younger for some reason in this vid
It triggers me so much when people say they cant lose what even when they claim they eat less calories than they use daily, then i ask how is their maintenace and they have no idea
Wow best explanation I have ever heard on this topic, totally IMPRESSED!
I’m binging your videos and literally you’re changing my life! You’re giving me information that finally makes sense in all the confusion! Thank you. Thank you so much
So if I’m aloud 2,300 calories a day which is my macros for weight loss but I don’t burn that will that lead to weight gain?
Hey ladies! Thank you so much for 100K subscribers:) I am still blown away by the amazing response I’ve had to my channel! You all rock! Giveaway with my bands and some e-books coming very very soon, so stay tuned on here and IG to find out how to enter (open globally!). Hope you enjoy this much requested video… thank you for your patience it took FOREVER to edit! Comment below any questions… answering them all now:) Love you guys xxx
Let’s see, I eat more calories and fewer carbs and have lost 40 lbs. only 10 more to go
So I’m struggling to accept this, if I eat 2000kcl from sweet potatoes, brown rice, beans salad etc Turkey breast meeting my macros would have the same effect as eating junk food that also has 2000kcl like fries burgers and fizzy drinks. I don’t know man. To begin with I had a large Big Mac meal the other day and it was close to a 1000kcl the whole meal. doesn’t this affect body composition muscle mass etc? Simple sugars will also mean it’s harder to stick to your diet right?
New subscriber here thanks for the very useful health tips
Omg! All she’s saying is stop calorie counting and eat well (Whole Foods), work out and you’ll be healthy and lose weight and look fit as a bonus.
Incredibly well explained, many thanks for your exceptional content.
You’re great. I love the genuineness you give and de-bunks about our society. Please keep posting content! I’ve just started hitting the gym and you’ve been providing me great advice! Thanks
i think thee will be some nutritions problems, like vitamns in junkfood.but u can still loss weight,in deficit
Calorie in < calorie out is the only way you can loose weight, that’s literally the only think that matters when it comes to losing weight.... such a click bait video! Like yeah no one deep fries a banana and then thinks it’s the same amount of calories as eating it “raw”, you can’t accurately calculate calories in and out for sure. But if ur feeling hungry then basically you have less calorie in... it doesn’t make the basic statement go away.
Im fat and I certainly dont get cold when I fast. I fast daily, OMAD, eat within a 1-2 hour window, usually 1 hour. Matter of fact I used to sweat way to much for nearly no reason until I started taking D3 (plus K2 and mag and my other supplements).
I have a question, so, if My diet is 1100 calories, how many calories do I have to “burn” to loose weight??
i started going by the atkins induction stage i eat between 8001,000 calories daily and 20 carbs i eat alot of meat (protein) i lost 12.6 lbs in 14 days( today is the 14th day) and im on phentermine….i like your videos very informative
I don’t know why its so common for people to underestimate calories. I typically overestimate them
I’m going to show this video to my mom. She tries so many different diets and never losers more than a couple of pounds that is just gained back. I always tell her you have to burn more than you consume but you explain it so much better.
Can you guys just talk and give useful information without always having to goof off, it’s annoying
Wow you need a reality check
Also you called yourself an idiot lool
So true. I wasn’t losing any weight because I wasn’t tracking calories, I was eating more calories than I realized
I thought you were good until I saw this video. CICO is the only one true rule in weight/fat loss. I lost over 40kgs on it. How is it WRONG? All those negative effects you described, it’s only when people do it on an unreasonably big deficit. Your body needs fuel, food = fuel. But you still need to consume less than you expend to LOSE stuffs. Eat enough to continue function normally but eat lesser to lose. That’s why it’s sustainable. There are other factors that helps but CICO is not wrong looooool. Even if it’s clickbait much, it’s ugh.
Hey Sean like how you put a summary in the description you’re one of the very few who do so. Not that I don’t want to watch but it’s convenient and helps deaf individuals as well. Thanks Sean my fav fitness YouTube channel!
I lost brain cells when you bought up that guy’s IG post holy fuck
Its hard to eat if you are petite like me 60inches /5’0 ft. MFP recommends to wat 1200 to lose weight. Even though i eat healthy. 40/30/30 macros. Though i always ecceed in carbs (asian) haha. I eat at around 1450 to 2000 thats why i cant lose weight. Do strenght training thrice a week and cardio thrice a week.:(
I have partially disagree. Of course it matters the amount of calories you take in vs the ones you burn. That´s just undeniable. But 100% agree that the types of calories you eat makes efect on the body and helps you eat a lot more or eat proper and less.
i thought bro food was if it fits your macros, so bro food is when you eat lean and clean to hit your macros?
deficit will only go so far…fat gain is due to hormones (i.e., cortisol, insulin, test, etc.)….get these in check with a slight deceit and IF….you should be good…its not really just cals in vs cals out….body doesn’t really work that way
one of the guys that became mr olympia ate nothing but hamburgers and pizza, now what does that say to u lot out there in troll world
So whats your opinion of this?
https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S1550413112001891
Sir I have a question. Is eating 100 calories of coca cola and 100 calories of eggs have the same impact on the body?
Shit! I don’t know who to believe! Jason Fung says blah blah insulin because calories aren’t all equal etc. Now this! Back to Joe Rogan because keto is the answer right? Nope, guess again…
If I add Vagina to my lean bulking diet do you think it will help my gains? @biolayne
I’m overweight and I freeze a lot more when I fast, I’m 60 pounds over my BMI. I also get cold often on a normal basis but worse when fasting ♀️
Simple answer for anyone not wanting to watch the whole video:
Yes, yes it is. It’s that simple =)
Calories in vs. out is everything
Calories in calories out is great for people with great metabolisms. It does not apply to those who do not. Ive seen it waaay to many times with my own eyes.
Definitely one of the best explanation on the calorie argument! Great channel!
Thermodynamics means shit to you?! Ancestors didn’t have cars and didn’t have to sit on their ass all day long. Is this too much for your small brain to comprehend…..
Great explanation about the topic. With so many “gurus” out there claiming a lot of bs, it’s necessary to keep remembering the basics.
And what your opinion about eating carbs and fats in the same meal on a bulk.? Do you think it makes fat store more easily.?
Very educational with some comic relief. I have been struggling with a tummy tire. I do like to eat fruit with a handle full of nuts once a day. Are grains a no no? Any suggestions on healthy snacks would be appreciated. Your videos are a real eye-opener. Thank you!
Great video and great delivery of information thank you, would love it if you link the studies you referring to in the description box i want to read them.
If you are looking to burn fat, you should look up on google Skinnimaker System. That can help you get the body you deserve.
Looooove this! The collab, the info, the presentation — love it. Thank you both!
doesn’t calories in vs calories out take into account sleep, hormones etc after you find you maintenance calories after some time experimenting? i think the approach of calories in vs out keeps things simple and is the foundation of losing weight. Also calories in vs out understands that the body adapts thats why we start calories high and slowly cut down… its like everything you say in ur video does not dismiss the calories in vs out topic it is still the driving factor of weight loss regardless.
I can see where your coming from. I understand that no, you can’t calculate to the T on everything because 1 that’s unrealistic, and 2 unsustainable, and lastly whose to say you’ll keep the weight off when you stop counting calories. Being aware of the fact that mental health is so vital when it comes to body image and the foods you eat is so underrated because a lot of people look to simply loose the weight and not live a sustainable balanced lifestyle, by that I mean, yes eat healthy foods, but also, eat the shit you want too! Because giving yourself breathing room is a sustainable way to eat. Just control yourself and learn not to go crazy eating what you want. BALANCE & SUSTAINABILITY!!!! I loved this video, thank you Shelley!
I think what Sean, is trying to say is eat clean, eat how how much your body needs to function in normal conditions and increase quality food if your are into some sort of physical training, to keep your body in shape. Once again thank-you, Sean.
Come outta the bushes on em….’..
Stab em……
Gotta love these boys
Always great work you put in, I truly enjoy listening what you post & very clear & realistic….that’s why so far I like your channel only! I have a question & wondering whats your opinion in this, if on calorie deficit do you count green vegetable like broccoli etc or you dont have to count? Is it limitless to eat greens only without counting.
Thanks
Great video, but does this theory assume that all calories in are utilised/absorbed by the body? Could a varing percentage of calories in (determined by diet), be unutilsed by the body? Affecting the cico theory.
Several Waitrose products in the video. Sean do you live in the UK?
Thank you for the truth, Doctor!
A lot of people (like Gary Taubes) try to obfuscate and dance around the truth that long-term daily caloric intake is the main determinant of weight not necessarily the carbohydrate content of the diet.
Lol loved the Star Trek usage and thank you for the warm words at the end so encouraging!!
So good to this collab. Too much science for the human mind to absorb!
You helped me so much with this video! Keto left me skinny fat and I’m trying to correct it by going to a CICO protocol. Thank you for bringing much needed clarity!!!
First off thanks to both of you for an excellent dialogue on calories. I’m striving to grasp the details of each video to the best of my ability. “A unit of heat” is very helpful. I do bodywork & do moderately intense martial arts a few days per week alternating aerobics, yoga & weight training. Loving Keto to sculpt, yet question the calorie scheme. Do I add more calories when doing workouts or take the avg macro for the day with my week to get the overall picture without counting exercise. Its getting to the nitty gritty in determination factoring how much food I need before I hold onto the last 4 pounds because I’m not eating enough…. I prefer to under eat than overeat as long as nutrition is king.
This video is so great! Just discovered you on youtube yesterday and have already watched 10+ videos. Love your science-based channel! Keep it up!
Very well presented. I had my suspicions that it was the fat loss that led to improvement in insulin sensitivity, possibly due to the fat threshold for that particular person. Low carb/Keto tends to be more effective for people with insulin resistance, but the inverse is found for people who are insulin sensitive.
I’m curious whether Keto preserves more lean body mass in obese individuals who don’t perform resistance exercise. Maybe people don’t gain fat on Keto, as easily, because they simply cannot digest that much in such a short period of time and it’s eliminated?
Thanks Sean. The big question is how much the body’s metabolism ie how efficiently energy is extracted from food can vary according to hormones, energy demands, etc. There can be unmetabolized calories in the bodies waste products, which can completely change energy balance. Or energy can be metabolized into a higher body temperature. so there are a bunch of variables in play.
I saw an interesting study recently. Mice that were fed a fixed amount of calories once a day lost weight compared with mice that were fed the same amount of calories but over 3 times a day.
A guaranteed way to lose weight is to eliminate snacks in between meals.
Thank you!! This video is awesome. There is so much bullshit information out there. I appreciate you explaining this. I’m saving this one!!
I like watch your videos and you have good talking. It’s easy for people to follow. And it’s interesting and funny how you demonstrate your points. Though I don’t have a lawn body like you have, But I like and agree with what you say. I think it’s good attitude and life style
If a person starts exercising and still maintains a neutral calorie balance, what would happen to the composition of mass over time depending on the exercise protocol? Say 6 months, 1 year, 2 years.
Just recently started counting my calories and have been losing weight! It’s crazy how scientifically proven facts actually work I’ll never go back to believing the low carb crap again.
You can’t thwart the law of thermodynamics. I don’t care what diet you’re on.
this is a bunch of bullshit what kind of shit you guys feeding these ppl.
How do you only have 147k subs? Do you have another channel or are people retarded?
Cool video. Good Info. I have one little critique. Any chance you can lose the echo?
very good information and advice
full watch got our like Ausupported you
Actually protein can be just as insulin spiking as carbohydrates. Also eating a ton of protein and low carbs, your body does a process called gluconeogenesis converting all that protein into glucose. If you want to be in true ketosis you have to eat higher fat low carbs low protein
I wish my nutritionist and surgeon had given me as much information as you have in the two videos I just watched by you. Thanks for your help. I will continue to follow you. ♥☺
Malabsorption can affect a lot more than just weight loss. When you have dysbiosis along with many autoimmune diseases, it can cause weight gain. Take hashimotos disease for example. TPO antibodies can be influenced by gut permeability. What passes through the intestinal lining (when compromised, as w/ most AI diseases) Increases inflammation in your body and thyroid gland. Which causes a myriad of problems with thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidwhen TSH is too high along w/ various others, will cause weight gain. That is not caused by too many calories.
Not all of your information is accurate. While I agree that what you’re saying would apply to a completely healthy individual. It does not apply to every person.
Cico has some major flaws when trying to preach weight loss to people. I’ve lost 150 pounds over 2.5 years. This discussion is incomplete.
Quickhow many calories did you eat today? I mean, exactly. Apparently food packaging can be off as much as 20%. So for a 2000 calorie day, you don’t know if you ate 1600 or 2400. Then what exactly is your bmr. I mean, exactly. Which formula did you use? Do you possibly have a slower metabolism than other people? So you think your bmr is 2200 when it might actually be 1800. All of those biggest loser candidates had this problem. Many of us who have dieted a lot on our lives may have this damaged.
Quick, go ahead and eat a diet high in carbs. 60-65 percent. Watch the energy levels plummet after meals. Watch the hunger spiral out of control. Take the food scales everywhere
The big problem with cico is both sides of that equation cannot be known with precise accuracy. Therefore, on any weight loss plan where you try and create a math deficit, it is prone to significant error. So many times in my life a might have had 1200 calories in a day at 300 pounds and would run and run. You initially take off weight for a month, then the energy disappears and injury happens. Then weight comes back on. The entire time you are fighting significant hunger.
The solution is to change the quality of your food which will automatically change the quantity of your food. No calorie counting in the last 6 months. Down 40 pounds in that time and barely hungry. How?
Start with 40/30/30 for awhile. Get off the processed garbage. Calorie count and portion control to start understanding what is in your food. Slowly move away from cheat meals.
Watch Jonathan bailor in ‘the calorie myth’. It is life changing
Switch to a keto/low carb/paleo lifestyle. Use intermittent fasting, omad, etc. low carb regulates your insulin. This prevents those low carb energy moments after meals. It gives you control of your hunger back. Eat massive salads with tons of greens and.6 g of carbs per pound of lean body mass. I had started calorie counting on this and after a few months it was no longer necessary.
After 40 years of half starving myself and exercising myself to death to get to nearly 400 pounds I have just done the above to get to 225.
Cico is a silly discussion to tell overweight people alone. Attention must be paid to carb levels, processed foods, insulin, and creating reasonable deficits. Would you advise a 350 pound man to eat 1200 calories of 65% carbs and have him workout in the gym 1-2 hours a day? That was me dieting for years. 6 small meals. Whole grains. Oats. Orange juice. Cereals. Why not? I’d mathematically create a 2000-3000 calorie a day deficit on the white board. What percentage am I losing that was fat or muscle.
The problem with cico has been that it is only 1/2 of the discussion and it has been used for years to make fat people feel like idiot failures. If you can’t lose weight, obviously the problem is you can’t put down the donuts and you don’t exercise enough.
Love the white board. But to just put up cico is part of the problem.
How does insulin block fat burning? How does cortisol hold fat when we are stressed. Where did our ancestors 15000 years ago get 6-11 servings of carbs per day?
I feel you have a lot of good information here from 50,000 ft view and this is a big part of the equation. But 100% incomplete. This video will be used by bro science newbie trainers to ‘educate’ fat people coming into the gym seeking answers only to be left with math that no one knows the exact numbers to both sides of the equation on.
I follow weight watchers I’ve tried to track in both my fitness pal & w.w..it can can get confusing. I’ve lost track of what I should focus on. I’ve lost 67 lbs in 16 months but I have 130 to lose. I’ve gotten so discouraged and hit a stall especially due to bad habits during the pandemic. Any ideas on what I should focus on to get back started. My doctor also prescribed phetermine and toprimate yesterday but I’m so afraid of insomnia. I just need a plan. I canceled my weight loss surgery last year to see if I can do this on my own. Any advice would be great. Thank you so much for the education and support you provide!
It’s worse than one trainer (Jillian Michaels) giving really bad advice. The last 100 years we have been cattle fed (with grains). Carbohydrate toxicity is the #1 source of disease.
Yes more of these please! You two were great together. Going to go check out his channel now, too.
Do calories matter at what time you eat? For example if throughout the whole day untill i get home for dinner, lets say I was at 1000 calories…if I eat a big dinner of 700-800 cal but do no physical activity at till next morning, is it bad even if it totals a cal deficit at 1800?
Finally someone spoke out!! Thank you!! The best way to fuel is FAT! #fuelbyfat #respect
Calories in, Calories outis an antiquated system. It doesn’t account for allergies, gut health, micro nutrients-or other variability’s, such as one cut of meat having much more fat content than the next-which changes the calorie value all together and macro/micro profile. The laws of thermodynamics apply to how fast a type of food is burned up in a cold scientific way, but that’s such a weird way of determining calories when their’s a whole list of complexities that occur once ingested. Layne seems to love equations because they are neat and tidy, but the body is so much more complex than that. Your level of testosterone has a massive effect on how food is absorbed and stored/burned, for instance. Also he tends to think that nutrient free fibers are somehow useful to the body even though the basic gut reaction is to get rid of it a fuckin sap. This is why guys like Paul Saladino or Shawn Baker can make easy work of this sort of obtuse paradigm. Also Layne hangs so much value on scientific studies-they’re good for certain measures, but generally they’re extremely inaccurate because our technology for taking measurements are still super primitive and rely on human honesty.
hmm I definitely agree that entering a calorie deficit does lower insulin resistance, but macros are surely important on top of this? I have insulin resistance, and really struggled to stay in a calorie deficit when still eating high(er) carb. (Likewise for multiple small meals/snacks). I know, I know, this isn’t about preaching the benefits of keto! But I don’t think it’s that wise to generalise and simply say that reducing calories improves insulin resistance the nuances have got to be addressed if you’re gonna make a statement like that. Maybe you’ve addressed that in another video, in which I apologise for my lack of foresight in that regard!
Often when I do intermittent fasting I am really cold and my gym trainer measured my fat and he said I’m a little high so I don’t understand if there’s any correlation I may be 5 pounds overweight no more and I do have hypo thyroid
IVF medications and prednisone made me fat, I did not eat anything differently but I did put on weight. I have since had a baby after 5 years of IVF and 6 miscarriages 1 baby, I do think that if you have insulin issues and you go low carb and lower your calories you of course lose weight, but I am telling you if you have insulin issues it takes a very very long time to get rid of belly fat. It is life style for me, I am still working on it by eating low carb healthy fats, moderate protein, 25kg down but still have stubborn belly fat. So hormones can make you fat, if you are injecting the fuckers right into your belly. Carbs make me super bloated and my blood glucose goes through the roof. But of course if you eat to much you will get fat, of course you have to watch what you eat if you want to lose fat. But Hormones play a huge role do not try to say they don’t.
So third degree burns are a good fat burning solution? Are butane torches a good method? Does it matter where you burn?
Omg, when 2 health nerds get together. Lol.. j/k I appreciate all the info & jargon.
It’s about Insulin, Dr Jason Fung has already disposed of the calories in vs calories out model.
Ive never don’t just a simple calories in vs calories out diet but I’m doing it now. My brother in law who is a personal trainer and he recommends this so I am giving it a shot.
Get u big time! It’s so frustrating to see peps arguing freely stuff they have no clue what they’re sayin whereas we study decades all nuances of such subject…and simply be quiet. Let’s not confuse a mere athelete with someone who’s besides it is a phd in physiology, protein metabolism…and so on…. I feel ya pal!! It’s hard to bump into so much bs over instagram “Fitness expert”! Great work layne!
How do stupid people have a YouTube channel? stop talking you just add to the confusion. Let the professionals do the talking. Ok… according to your video you are an idiot.
Great info! Is it feasible that on a specific diet, the wasted calories can amount to say 7000 kcals per day, that without really trying or restricting intake or upping exercise, that one can effectively burn an extra 1kg of fat daily?
Eating low glycemic index food or a Avocado 1 time a day but eating fast food the rest of the day + not moving. will fix nothing lol
What a delicious discussion; a perfect balance of science, integrated hypotheses and frank personal ideas. How refreshing. Thanks, you two.
Jeff Nippard just posted a video and stated that you can lose fat in a caloric surplus if you gain muscle at a rapid pace because of the differences in energy densities. But here you said you can only lose fat if you are in a caloric deficit. He has almost 900k followers so I thought it was worth it to address what he said.
Fantastic Sean. I’m literally roll my eyes and want to jump off a bridge every time I hear this. Especially from people who would be considered “experts”. This is purely speculation but I wonder if this mindset began from people who just didn’t lose weight on a diet and were sick of tracking. It almost takes away the responsibility and onus from someone if just eating less doesn’t bring about weight loss. I love your thoughts on this and I totally agree. I also know that I have definitely run into many people who espouse this mindset that just mean that you don’t have to TRACK calories to lose weight. Although as you have pointed out in a previous video that can only get you so far. Anyways as always thanks for the great video!
Hope you guys found this piece of advice helpful. Comment below and let me know what you think about it.
You can also take my physique quiz at https://Quiz.SeanNal.com to find the exact training and nutrition strategy I recommend for you based on your individual body type, goals and experience level.
Thanks for watching and see you in the next video.
Meh. I rather count to 20 (grams of carbs) than 2,000 (calories). It’s just easier if nothing else. Also, CICO doesn’t take GI & GU into account. Certain food and ingredients w/ a high GI will stop your body from losing weight no matter how many actual calories they are or wether your in a deficit or not. I’m sure I’m in a calorie deficit on Keto half the time, but I haven’t felt the need to keep track, I’m too busy loosing body fat to give a shit.Hit the gym twice a week. CICO and hitting the gym 14 times a week??? Ha! Good luck with all that. The old saying”Work smarter, not harder” rings a bell.
Most people forget that if you build more muscle, the more fat you lose lol. Why look for some silver bullet?
Only thing I’ve ever seen that works to lose weight is reducing daily calories.
anyone else struggling to find the hot instagram chick in the timeline?
Very helpful video that to be fair if people actually watched it and took note it has the potential to really help turn someone’s life around in terms of their food consumptions quandaries… Top man!!
Question: If you eat more protein, you are going to be in more of a deficit, assuming you control total calories? Because it takes a lot more energy to breakdown that food type. I assume this isn’t already taken into account with the normal recognize 4 calories per gram of protein? So is the real rough amount of calories per gram of protein around 20% less on the low end?
Basically is the TEF already accounted for in the 4 calories per gram of protein?
Love your videos, thanks for thanking the time and making all of these wonderful videos.
Sorry Sean but humans are not herbivores. Calories are an artificial construct that is not known to the human body. We are designed to eat meats and fats predominantly. Protein is a CELLULAR BUILDING BLOCK and the body does not prefer to use it as a FUEL. TO convert to fuel it has to work an inefficient bio-process to break it down (30-40% net loss in so called calories) and that waste is what is called “the thermal effect of food”. It is MUCH better to err on too much protein since the body would rather just DUMP/WASTE excess protein (urine) rather than spend energy converting it to glucose then to fat (two levels of conversion). But the whole CICO model is BOGUS. NO FOOD is proximate identical to any other food caloric content varies enormously by size of fruits, where it grew (solar energy converters), how much sugar, starch it contains etc. Animal meats and fish also vary radically in caloric content basted on what season it was harvested in and what the animals grazed on fat content can be highly marbled or quite lean even within same cuts of meats. At best CICO model is only a very rough guesstimate of what the energy content of food potentially is (but if one can’t digest it to begin with its just poorly absorbed to begin with). The whole preoccupation with calories is a waste of time if one is eating naturally by natural appetite sensing. Just eat whole foods that have good nutrients and it will be impossible to over eat. Our bodies sense NUTRIENTS NOT CALORIES. Most people are carb sugar addicted and are literal drug addicts. Most hunger arises from the sugar crash that never satisfies. Salt deficiency is also what is driving most people’s taste demands and the food marketers are brilliantly programming everyone to grab a bag of salty chips or crap food to get their salt fix that their brains are programmed to grab. Humans are 85% carnivores and if eating natural meats/fish/eggs and good natural fats and only seasonal small portions of fruits (not the super GMOd/hybrid extra large and sweet kind) then it will be impossible to over eat. At the bottom it is IMPOSSIBLE TO BURN OWN BODY FAT in a high insulin context above fasting insulin levels. If we eat 3 meals a day of sugars and starch laced foods (and not even snack) the only time one will burn body fat is for a couple hours into their evening sleep when insulin moderates. It takes 6+ hrs for insulin to drop from a high carb eating binge before one can burn body fat again.
3:27 isn’t it possible to lose 1 kg of fat and gain 2 kg of muscle and since fat has more than twice the calories of protein than you gained weight in a calorie deficit?
I lost 70 pounds by counting calories. Then I yo-yo’d between 40 pounds for years. Then gained it all back plus 50 pounds eventually. If calorie counting works for you, great. But for me it’s not at all sustainable and it just feeds into obsessive behavior. Focusing on nutritionally dense food and working out in ways that I enjoy is something I can maintain.
Can you please advice how calories are actually determined in any food. Is consuming different food groups together actually have any impact on calories in. For me if you have to burn the food and use the smoke and ash generated to determine the calories in any food and equate that to how humans eat and digest their food is flawed science.
FANTASTIC information! So wonderful to hear from two people who are passionate about the science. Great stuff. Need more, more, more!
wow, where to begin? back in the days there was no fast food and people worked all day, everyday. no computer, video games or tv…. now it’s different…. it’s evolution.
So i guess 99.9% of everybody else is wrong? just because you are gifted with genetic and what works for you doesn’t mean will work for everybody else means that you are right.
Calories deficit or surplus is a fact and backed up with evidences. so we should trust an attractive chick on youtube with no science degree whatsoever instead of proven researches done over decades. wake up people, this is a joke, it’s all about clickbaits and benjamins. anyone who believe what’s coming out of her mouth is an imbecile!
Only recently discovered you, really like your approach, now wading through your videos, relevant to me or not..thank you..
I think the thing overlooked is that the average modern non-athletic person eats too damn much and is probably why after people go off any diet they gain weight back. There seems to be no way to simply lose all this weight and then BAM, you’re fixed! Now go back to eating they way you used to and you’ll never gain weight again. So people may ask, “Does that mean I have to be on a diet for life?” Well, maybe we need to rethink what the proper amount of food is that we adults actually need. Probably a lot less than than we think.
Awesome Breakdown! Thanks for the truth and also being realistic and it’s nice to see someone that is not bullshitting the process. Thanks for the way you explained! Very very helpful!
If you eat more of any macronutrient ( protein, carbohydrate or fat ) you will gain adipose tissue.
I think I get it. You should count your carbs, if you’re diabetic, and also count your overall calories to lose wight, right?
Your eyes are so beautiful and you’re a very compassionate person, it’s nice to have doctors like yourself. I am trying so hard to count the calories when I prepare Indian food myself. I have found a very nice app that is adds free, https://www.nutritionix.com/, I really like it and it even links with Fitbit app. I am not able to do the ketogenic diet even though I would very much like to because I’m a sugar addicted.
Just the thought of being on a diet makes me want to eat things that I don’t even eat normally, such a messed up head. I like the idea of intermittent fasting, so I just started doing that since yesterday. Thank you for your videos.
HOLO SEAN [email protected] AS A COMPUTER PROGRAM WITH A NEW BUZZCUT, DO ANDROIDS DREAM OF ELECTRIC SHEEP. YOUR MAKER WAS 1/15 DUTCH AND JUST DID HIS CLOG DANCING AT 3 EVERY MORNING TO “FEEL THE BURN!!!” JUST CHILLAX AND HAVE A PICNIC EH, WITH THE DOWNLOADED SWEDISH BIKINI TEAM EH!!!!!!
It’s amazing how many people have missed the point of this video. She’s not saying calories in / calories out doesn’t work. She’s saying “guys you’re gonna stress yourselves out counting everything and probably gonna get it wrong anyway so don’t stress, stop developing an unhealthy relationship with food. ” Generally a good message that more women need to hear. Stop tripping over yourselves trying to show how clever you are and get the point of the video.
Hi, I am a 4ft 700lbs pygmy from Tanzania. Wht fitness app should I use?
I feel warmer in ketosis but I do have a high body fat content as well.
A gram of protein is 4 calories. That protein can be used only once. If it used for muscle or any other necessary process, which it will be preferentially, then it cannot also be used for energy. The problem with CICO has nothing to do with the “quality” of the food or the way the body metabolizes energy sources, but that some of the calories that you count won’t ever be in the energy cycle to begin with.
Two of my favorite guys!! Thanks for all the help in transforming my life and eating. Pray that God blesses your families.
OMG YOU GUYS CRACK ME TF UUUUP! MADE ME SPIT OUT MY DRINK ON THAT LAST PART ABOUT THE HORSE!
Stethoscope is made in our factory
I m not lieing my father are business man
And we make surgical instruments
I like your video In my case, after pregnancy I gained a lot of weight and could not get away with anything, until I started counting the calories, the first week I lost 6 pounds and then I started losing 2 pounds per week, since then I lost 18 pounds in total so far. So, for me it works. But everything depends on each person.
So if I eat 2500 calories a day I have to burn 2500 calories a day???? I know this is old hope you see this and respond
But what if you’re a newbie and you get newbie gains and the first 3 months you gain 5 lbs muscle and lose 2 lbs fat at the same time, for a net +3 lbs mass gain. Would it be safe to say you lost fat while in a calorie surplus? That’s just what the instagram guy was trying to say.
Counting calories really helps but going to starvation number 1400 with a run and my part time work leads to lethargy and weight gain. The weeks i am rushing all day riding my bike and trainimg though eating the same I gain weight. Im now sick as well and cant stomach training.
Can anyone provide a link to the article by Dr. Phillips on dairy that Layne mentioned around the 11:00 mark?
I wish wish wish I had you when I was in high school and college, in the depths of my eating disorder. I’m 7 years into recovery now, but I’m so thankful you’re using your platform to take down the dangerous myths of the diet industry.
Hey baby are you going to lat me work out with you baby wassup
No matter how many new theories are spinned, at the end of the day to it all still boils down to calories in out. All the rest has minimal effect. Only beneficial part of other theories is they might help with reducing calorie intake.
There is NO magic formula with with you can lose weight without caloric deficit. No way around Eat less Exercise more, so simple but apparently so hard for most.
Sean you are very articulate in giving every possible angle of the facts or misconceptions of an everyday layman has, an average gym goer or results of medical research. why they might be or think they’re right etc…. kudos to you.
Do we have to fast every day to be of benefit?, or may it alternate?
People get a app that counts your calories, know your BMR then take 500-800 off that…if 2,000 calories to maintain weight(BMR) then subtract 500 = 1,500 Cals…..then get a app or fit bit that tracks your calories burn throughout exercise and walking ect throughout the day……if your Fitbit says you burn 400 calories…..then hey 1500(Cals to lose)+400(cals burn)= 1900 you can eat now
This video is inaccurate. You’re describing the benefits of fat consumption with protein instead. Too much protein leads to fat storage and gout. I know, I lost 60 lbs
counting calories is tedious at best. it makes you hungrier doing it. i tried it and knowing how many calories does not equate to curbing your craving for food. for most fat people who like to eat. whats detailed here does not work..
Sean
Overweight and trying to loose fat. Do I still need to consume the amount of protein using 0.8 x (my current weight)? With the total calorie deficit?
James want’s to cross his fingers and hope he’s in a caloric deficit because apparently he does not count caloties and he’s not aware that when he’s losing weight He actually is in a caloric deficit whether he knows it or not. James does’nt count calories BUT his body does so what he thinks is happening when he loses weight is irrelevent.
How stupid do you habe to be to belive this!? You cant break the laws of physics
Then how come all know someone who eats allot but doesn gain weight?
Just love your delivery. Your very smart and so entertaining. Thankyou.
I log every day in food diary cal, protein, fat, carbs
I’m staying around 1,160 cal and 57g protein and 20g carbs and about 70 g healthy fat like MCT oil and cold press coconut oil.
And 30-40 min exercise daily sliming down its working nice!
Good and informative video sean it will definitely help a lot of people!
Bahahaha I freaking died at the “calorie deficit controls mass loss not fat loss” and you’re like “…alrighty then…”
What are your thoughts about using a fitbit to track the calories burned? Thanks for the info, like always on point.
wow praying on obese women while saying all sorts of BS and twisting science to make it seem you are right. Praying on the stupidity of all of your subs. Treat them like idiots and they will stay idiots.
so calorie counting and low carb is the way? or is it okay if i’ll do calorie counting without restricting my carb intake?
Does she know that the activity levels were much higher then and fast food chains were not the predominant source of a quick run chow down back then
This is all accurate, except I’d just like to add that people interchange use of the word weight and fat, which is a cause for some of the confusion. It’s possible to lose fat and gain muscle in a net neutral energy balance based on the types of foods being eaten and the exercise being done. Say, for example, eating a lower carb, moderate fat and higher protein diet, and incorporating weightlifting. By keeping the hormones that govern lipolysis in balance, stressing the muscles, and eating enough protein, (and drinking enough water) metabolism will be stimulated to use stored fat energy and exogenous protein to support muscle growth. The energy balance can remain neutral overall, so there’s no WEIGHT gain, but the overall energy in the system will be shifted so that there’s LESS FAT and MORE MUSCLE.
CICO and HORMONE BALANCE both matter for an optimal metabolic profile. Yes, energy in vs. energy out is a rule, but weight and fat are not synonymous, and muscle and adipose are two separate compartments into which macronutrients are partitioned differently.
If i hear one more person say that calorie in calorie out does not work, I’m going to lose my mind. It’s common sense. We try to make everything so complicated.
Great content Layne. Articulate, concise and clear
Can you please do a “what I eat in a day/week” video? Those are so helpful
Hahaha the same can not tolerate everyday the same food, not even for second meal
It was nice to actually be able to hear Keith forming coherent sentences without a million interruptions. Kevin’s sentences too
There needs to be more of these videos on your channel! It’s just nice to hear discussions like this.
you are so right! I can eat pretty much what i want, as long that i have a defecit in calories vs my bmr, i lost 25 pounds in 3 months! And i was diabetic, now i’m off of all my med, and my blood pressure normalised too, so off this med too!!!! When you are loosing weight, indepedently of what kind of food you eat, everything normalizes!!!!! Biolayne, you’ve said the Truth!!!! you are the man!!!!
People need to focus on the quality of their carbs. I have a diabetic relative who has a subscription to a magazine that gives her ‘diabetic-friendly’ recipes that are complete crap.
Everyone (especially diabetics) should be avoiding processed junk. Cakes and doughnuts have carbs (but, they’re also usually more than 50% fat, but people don’t consider that fact) but fruits and vegetables are also carbs. Whole food carbs are not the problem. People eat too much fat which interferes with the action of insulin.
Finally, for weight loss, counting calories is not sustainable or accurate. Long-term studies show this over and over. People can lose weight on low carb, but they can also lose weight on any other diet, because the underlying mechanism is food restriction which is unhealthy and may also lead to orthorexia.
Also, happy to share that I have just reached 1 year on the ketogenic way of eating and have lost/kept off 30 pounds!
subjects like this should be teached in School in my opinion. im from Germany, idk what they are telling you in america, but over here we basicially learn how wo work until we die (okay just until 70+), but we actually dont learn how to life.
I’ve seen this video the first time about a year ago. It was interesting but I forgot about it and thought you are saying weird stuff. A year later I was tired of counting calories. It was stressing, I had to plan everything. And I’ve watched your video again. I’m doing it for the last month, vegan version. It is amazing! I’m losing weight and still can enjoy food. It’s quite funny reading all those comments that you are not right, while I know you are. Thank you! You made my life easy again! ❤️
“Once you TASTE #keto; there is no cheating… you don’t wanna go back!”
Is this a click bait title? This video is so wrong. Where did you get all your logic and reasoning?
What a wonderful informative video. Thank you for your passion for doing this amazing video
There are so many calorie counters out there nowadays and they all give different information, so WTF! And the calorie counts on the back of most package labels are wildly inaccurate, so I do the math myself on some scrap of paper. Sometimes they are more or less on track, but more often than not I have no idea how they came up with those numbers, even if I allow for them assuming fat grams only have 4 calories each. I have come to realize that the best way I can tell if I am gaining or losing weight is to look in a mirror and by how my clothes are fitting.
I got sick with keto diet so now I am going to try counting calories and carbs
On point Sean! Cleen eating and hitting plateaus are beated only with calories in/out count, all else remaining equal
It’s all about the numbers. The deficit. No matter what diet or nutrition plan you are on. Bottom line!
Counting cals for 5 months, started at 3000 cals at 260lbs body weight now I’m 235lbs taking in 2350 cals. You eat too much you get fat, you eat to little you starve and die. It really is that simple why complicate it.
Thank you Sean! As usual, very helpful, clear and simple! You’re the best!
yes I’d like more info. like this…I so many question via I had gastric bypass and am 50yrs old and went into menopo. last year having one ovary vis hystorectemy and a now low thyroid count. I am now putting on weight greatly throughout our winter, when I would loss a few pounds yet I got so sleepy and was in pain via years of accidents, 3 kids, 29 surgeries, which most were due to ovarian cyst issue. galbladder, appendix, etc. I want my life back.
What I am hearing is that calories matter, but not all calories are created equal, and certain food groups will lead to more overall health and satisfaction. Not sure why people are so upset over this idea.
To ordinary people who want to lose fat-but can’t get started. Copy And paste into Google Fat Blast Furnace right away.
The study you referred to by Dr. Kevin Hall (the 4 week interventional study) was a pilot study and has been shown to have major flaws.
Calories in vs Calories out does matter. It is the way you choose to achive that deficit that results in different forms of eating styles.
People really take tape worms? I thought that was a joke from Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Bios3training says calories in v calories out is bullshit lmao
He should’ve been my Physical Education and Life orientation teacher, maybe I would’ve known why I’m fat. Thanks for the video.
Thank you. Definitely more collaboration!! At week 12 on keto
We live in a modern world where we sit down a lot more than ever before, have more processed food than ever before and food available at all times. This is why many people count calories, because we are unwilling to change the things that shaped us to live this sort of life. As long as you don’t exercise, eat processed food and eat to often you will indeed need to count calories to lose weight.
But as she is trying to say: How will you feel about living that way? Will you be healthy/happy? You can exercise, stop eating “bad” calories and eat larger meals less often (when you are really hungry). Then you do not need to count calories whatsoever.
Many people criticize this video, but i find this sort of message important in a modern world. Maybe we shouldn’t always be so modern if such a basic thing as eating is a problematic equation and obsession. Thank you Shelley.
Layne,,,,,,man please tell me once and for all, is it all about calories in vrs calories out???I get so fucking confused with all the YouTube videos saying you must do low carb. They say if you raise your insulin it’s impossible to lose weight. Is that true??ive become a fan of you and Holly? I’m following your advise going forward
macros for life and calorie deficit and one day healthy refeed of doubling carbs to fuel workouts for the week has been a game-changer for me.
Layne, why do you think it is so hard for people to just accept calories in and out?
I have hypothyroidism and on medication. What is your opinion on what will happen and what action should I take while doing keto?
You are so spot on it hurts dude!!! Great work spreading the facts. How do you work out your maintenance Sean? I know how to but how would you do it?
I just cut off both of my legs and ate 5 big Mac’s today. So jokes on you, I was in a calorie surplus and lost weight doing so.
I’m around 40% bf and I have been freezing since day one of starting fasting and keto
12:45, that’s why you’re looking at your daily intake, not your intake every hour or minute wtf
Taking for putting herbalife in I gained like 10Kgs ons this “miracle”.
Doctors used to tell women to smoke to stay slim, doesn’t mean it’s healthy… I try but I just can’t buy that keto diet….
I have a high body fat percentage and after workouts or during I.F. I get so cold that my nails go blue and I have to sit in front of a heater to ‘recover’ to normal. I just blame my anemia when this happens, but who knows!
There are people (I’ve never met them) who have messed up metabolism. But I’ve never met an overweight person who didn’t consume more calories than others. I’ve never met a person with a six-pack that ate as much as me.
Holy crap at the top comments of this comment section. Humanity is doomed. Apparently 25 minutes of explaining that calories in vs calories out is meaningless because calories in =? and calories out =?, still doesn’t get through your thick skills. Meanwhile circle-jerking with their self-back-patting insults. Honestly, at this point, I rather see this part of humanity suffer with their CICO diets.
just giving you a heads up. you should consider watching Dr. Ken Berry’s recent calorie video. i think it might change your stance on this topic
Have you ever done DNA testing for nutrition and Fitness? The one that I offer to clients gives you a great guideline for what works best for you based on your own genetics. You’re diet and fitness routine can be tailored specifically to your DNA. If your interested in learning more please feel free to email me at [email protected] gmail.com I would be happy to send you a copy of a full genetic report so you can see what genes we test and how they impact your health and fitness.
It would be a shame for you not to get ripped when normal people do it easily using Muscle Maker Method (Google it).
No… if you have burned 1,000 calories so far throughout the day (through BMR, NEAT, TEF, Exercise) and you eat a 5 calorie M&M… then you are still in a deficit. 5 (cal in) 1,000 (cal out) = -995. So you are still in a massive deficit for the day.
Also, please stop saying “studies show” and not referencing said studies. Don’t preach science without providing evidence to support your claims.
4:45 thats wrong. Fasted activity in a small caloric surplus can also lead to weight loss because the fasted training goes straight to your fat storage.
You don’t need to eat keto to be a healthy weight. She is right, fat shouldn’t be avoided, but I also don’t think carbs should be. A healthy balance of carbs and healthy fats is fine. The difference between tribes/ our ancestors and now is SUGAR! Artificial sugar……the devil. Constantly spikes blood sugar levels, addictive, makes you feel constantly hungry. It’s put in everything to make us all addicted, and fat. Cut artificial sugar from your diet and you likely won’t have to count calories, not because they don’t matter, but because when you eat real food rather than addictive substances or good that’s been altered in a lab, then your appetite becomes super regulated, you stop when your full, eat when your hungry and can listen to your bodies cues.
your not gonna tell me a 150 kcal can of coke has the same effect as a 150 kcal scoop of some fresh coconut oil. Completely different hormonal effects. The QUALITY of your kcal is far more important than the QUANTITY of your kcal.
I love that there is no ego between these two, they aren’t talking over or passed each other and they show respect. I’d love to see more collaborations with these two, on both of their channels. Thanks for the great information, gentlemen.
This is the exact reason why I had to lead all the carnivore message boards because people were claiming was absurd.
Some people are saying they’re taking 6000 calories and still losing weight
Everyone on here that is very quick to throw in the stupid comments…. you are missing the point which Shelly is explaining. A bit of common sense here folks… she’s not saying that calories don’t count at all, she is saying that if you use your common sense and eat healthy whole foods IN MODERATE PORPORTION..and use common sense and exercise healthily and regularly… you don’t NEED to be counting every single calorie… this is pure common sense sorry guys… all you guys blabbing on about science etc etc… your just making more effort on yourselves… A bit of common sense goes a long way Doesn’t take a genius to figure out which foods are healthy and not healthy.. and how much portion is too much etc etc….. Keep up the good work Shelly. You have a mountain of common sense girl
I’m strict keto and IF everyday for 18-20 hours; and with low BMI. I had a procedure done at the hospital and the doctors and nurses were concerned my body temp was so low, but I didn’t feel cold. I think it was 35 degrees. They kept throwing blankets on me.
How many calories should a 5’7″ 50ish woman eat that has over 50 pounds to lose?
You ARE AWESOME!!! Very clear and concise! Keep up the good work!! I wish you were in NJ!:)
I just don’t understand who says we have to eat 1200 calories a day? I just started keto and find it difficult to eat that many while skipping breakfast. Why is this a magic number?
Hey so, I’m intermitting fasting rn and I wanna gain or at least keep the Muscle I have rn, should I eat a surplus in the window, or a deficit. I’m trying to lose fat to see my abs and I wouldn’t mind having some guidance
1997 I was told by a medical doctor that the LOW CARB diet I was on was unhealthy and even deadly.
Early 2000s, a Nutritionist told my wife she was in danger because she was on a LOW CARB diet.
2019, we are still on LOW carb (KETO now) diet and heathier than anyone our age, not on keto.
I have an issue. I weigh 235 pounds. I’ve lost 75 pounds over the past 2 years. I started off eating around 1800 calories, then I hit a plateau. I count calories using MyFitnessPal and MyFitnessPal said I needed to lower my calories. As I lost weight I’ve had to lower my calories more. Right now MyFitnessPal is recommending I eat 1,420 calories. That feels really low and I am always hungry. But when I eat even 100 calories over that on a regular basis, I gain weight.
I have 80 more pounds I want to lose. I feel like if I continue down this path my calories will end up REALLY low for maintenance. I am not ok with that. I don’t know what to do.
The interesting thing is when I hit a plateau I first do a reFeed and that seems to recharge my weight loss. So occasionally eating high calories IS helpful for me in losing weight.
Oh Yea, I do not work out. I do go for a 1 hour walk about 6 days per week. Other than that my life is VERY sedentary.
Also I am vegetarian (because animals are our friends not our food) and this year I cut desserts and alcohol out of my diet. I don’t eat dairy except for cheese. I only eat cheese because I am addicted to it, but I do not eat butter, eggs, seafood, yogurt, cottage cheese, milk, etc..
I don’t do low carb or low fat or super high protein. I don’t follow structured diets.
I don’t cook. I eat mostly frozen vegetarian meals and then always a big fresh salad for dinner. I enjoy the foods I eat and I don’t feel deprived. I just feel hungry.
A normal day for me my macros are about:
Fat: 50
Carbohydrate: 180
Protein: 55
Also:
Sugar: 60 g
Sodium: 3000 mg
I take vitamins, specifically B vitamins and Calcium/magnesium/potassium, vitamin D and iron.
Any advice for how I can stop cutting calories but still lose 80 more pounds?
I am obese, and in the past I have done periodic month-long juice fasts. I used to get very cold. Then I added bone broths and clear vegetable broths to my fasts and the shivers and cold ceased.
Man, I really wish the calories in/out thing was true in all cases but I’ve seen it with my own eyes that it’s not always the case. My sister in-law was doing about 800 Kcals a day and plateaued and didn’t see any further losses until she increased to 1100. My Mrs struggles to get enough calories in her, her daily intake for a deficit should be around 1500 minimum and she has a small appetite and struggles to get passed around 1250, but struggles to lose so much as a pound. I used to be a PT so my understanding of exercise science and nutrition isn’t nothing.
Also, my maintenance is around 2000 kcals and I eat about 1500 max per day for the last, what, decade? and so by now, I should weigh about minus 100 pounds.
You know what? I’m gonna say it. You look great in that v neck, sean.
all of the CICO experts seem to ignore the calories excreted. dried dung is (or was) commonly used for fires in many parts of the world.
What foods are Bro foods? Lean beef, chicken, fish, sweet potato’s, pumpkin?? Where the hell do you find the list?
I started counting my calories 2 weeks ago, and did a 5 day water fast last week. I lost 6 pounds last week doing the water fast and can see a significant difference since starting to count calories. I have been eating less than 900 calories per day for the past 2 weeks. Most days I end the day a bit over 600 calories consumed. I’m a writer so weekends I’m getting no exercise because I’m in the house in front of my PC all weekend. During the week I work in an office and I use the Samsung health app to make sure that I’m walking and reaching at least 6k steps per day. My question is, is it realistic for me to think that I can keep up the 6 pound per week weight loss while calorie counting and only walking 5 days per week?
Layne, do macro ratios play a role in weight loss? Or is calories in calories out more important
Is that a micro wave oven behind you,,, on your right? Big No No,,,,Thanks for all of your info,,I enjoy your videos,,,
I eat carbs.. tried keto for 2 weeks and wanted to die! Zero energy and had my soul try to leave my body. Terrible!!! So I think you guys are full of shit. I say that with all due respect..
You look like Julian from Trailer Park Boys if he put down the booze
If only all the animals products wouldn’t be unhealthy in so many other aspects!!!
“It may be your opinion, but you’re a dumbass for that opinion”:-)
Tell the dummies that they can try eating 10,000 calories a day in fat and see what happens. LOL
Counting calories is stupid. Not all calories are equal. Lowering the calories will slow the metabolism. If you eat more calories, the body will simply burn more. Obviously this only works within a moderate window
Super hyped about this collaboration!! You guys should get together more and nerd out on this health science topic
Thank you you have a wonderful soul!! I really hope you see this message out from the trolls!!! All girls needs this!!
What do you recommend for vegans? Or whole food plant-based?
My body fat is pretty high (25-30%) and I get cold on prolonged fasts
I can’t do that, I can be in a caloric deficit and eat whatever I want, I lose weight but… I get fat on my stomach and chest.
Came here because of the master Greg couchette. Was hoping to see more tittys and ass but that’s ok.
I don’t hate on keto I tried it but couldn’t hang with it. I’ve found success eating every 2-3 hours as of late though. 175-162 in 3 weeks but I lift too. Honestly every time I hit a plateau I’ll just try another diet for a bit usually works
Someone help please! I been cutting for the last 4 months and still can lose weight. I used to eat 325g carbs and now I’m at 180g carbs and still same weight.
Any idea?
Maaan, I just absolutely deleted no, ABOLISHED myFitnessPal on my phone… whilst barbecueing!
Yes, please..we want to see you 2 again. You 2 inspired us to become more aware about our body response related with food and life style in general.
Yes, we want more♀️
Hey Sean and community, just a question here. Will doing a boxing class 2 times a week for 1 hour have negative side effects for muscle loss? Im doing hypertrophy training 5 times a week and i keep my calories in the right surplus range
This is the funniest thing; love you and I definitely agree! I could never agree with the stupidity! Always the middle way
So what kind of changes occur for those of us that are already hypothyroid and have been for years due to autoimmune. I am in my beginning of my keto journey and all of the talk to protect the thyroid and supporting its function are hard for me to reconcile in my situation with t3 and t4 being replaced daily for me via meds. I don’t want to have slow metabolism due to my preexisting issues. I am well into ketosis but want to be sure I can keep the weight loss going as well as the health benefits.
Wow. Too many people are misinterpreting Sean’s point. He’s not saying to count calories. He’s saying calories MATTER, and they do. I even found one comment advocating for Ken Berry’s advice. Ken Berry literally wrote a poem about the merits of eating bacon, cheese, and butter. He’s a Keto guy with a paunch belly, and Americans love him because so many are very willing to “sustain” a diet as long as it includes fatty meat and cheese along vegetables soaked in butter. As far as the science, Ken and Sean are actually saying the same thing about calories but in a very different way. But people should listen to Sean because he’s an advocate for LONG TERM HEALTH by way of a sustainable, well rounded, whole food diet combined with physical fitness. Ken is making money by pandering to Americans (should I say duping?) that love their steaks, bacon, and butter-slathered greens to clear their conscience.
Hey I’m 15 years old and I am 170 pounds I have decent sized arms I bench almost my whole body weight about but I have a size 32 inch waiste and I’m trying to get my stomach flat it’s not to big but there’s some fat there how do I loose it. please let me know if you have any advice for me
Damn I miss the hell out of this intro. Fuck whoever complained about the intro being to long that made them stop.
Is it not true if the body over consumes more carbs than it burns for energy the body takes the unburned carbs and stores them as fat?
This was very helpful! Can you make a video on how much calories people should take? Depending on their gender age and height?
Layne Norton Calories in calories out video. It isn’t any more complicated than that.
Stop waffling on about stuff you don’t really understand to make money from you tube and come up with unrealistic solutions to problems that don’t exist.
Sean, I think you really underestimate the role of hormones like insulin on fat storage and burn. In fact you don’t mention it at all.
looking good sean, fantastic muscles you have gotten bigger, would you like a drawing done
Calories matter but calories in calories out idea is absolute bullshit.
Converting protein to glucose is very expensive and makes a lot of nasty byproducts. If you ate 2-3 pounds of meat and your body converted it all to glucose, you would literally die from eating just one meal. That is how rabbit starvation works. Thankfully your body is smart enough to not KILL you most of the time: it only converts protein to glucose when it NEEDS more. So you can effectively eat all the protein you want and the calories in it literally do not matter at all for weight loss.
In one study they gave participants who did no exercise one of three supplements to take with each meal. One was pure carbs, one was soy protein, the last was whey protein. The ones eating the carbs got fatter. The ones eating the soy had zero effect. The ones eating the whey protein gained lean muscle mass and reduced their body fat percentage slightly.
I left a question on your site recently about wrist pain, but I have done some research and asked for advice from the gym manager and other people there. The manager told me to ease the grip when doing the chest press. Also, I may buy your book too possibly.
Ok, well, that’s all fine, clear as mud. So, you professionals talk about counting this and that. You must be using some formula of some kind to calculate carbs. Other videos say carbs is the key, your says calories is key to loose weight. It seems to me there must be a ratio from one to another to give a value you can say is true or the correct value. My V.A. heart surgeon says no carb diet is the key…??? What. You say calories. There is a book out called PROTIEN POWER. So, what gives here.
I have a glucose meter that I am sure most people have. That meter uses some calculation to give me a number I am suppose to follow. But you can give me that calculation for anything. I am starting to belive here that diabetes is like chasing a ghost on a foggy day wear I can’t see my nose in a mirror. So, again…what the deal here. Thanks.
To people who want to burn fat-but can’t get started. Go Google Skinnimaker System right away.
Don’t forget the most important hormone is insulin. Insulin affects both hunger and the metabolism.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2kuDl810LBg please just watch
Funny dudes, but calories in Vs. calories out is too simplistic. Hormones regulate the metabolism. Leptin, insulin, ghrelin, triiodothyronine……, all work together.
Does it depress you that by monetizing your channel, Tom DeLauer ads riddle your videos? The irony…:(
You are exactly right, the best diet is a low carb calories restriction
Hi I’m Shelley, you don’t need to practice reading to learn how to read all you have to do is study the Alphabet.
Feeling hopeless about all the Weightloss methods without able to find out any benefits.I’ve the solution for you, type in Google as: “Hack2LossWeight” to get all the hacks about weight loss.
When your two favorite male health experts are in the same video, it’s magic!
Think of it like this, from your 3 macros, fat takes up the most calories (1g fat=9calories, 1g protein=1g carb=4calories). So if you eat the fattening food (lots of fat) you will fill out your daily calories limit quicker so you won’t be as satisfied and fulfill comparing to eating healthy, where you can eat more of because they have more carb and protein. It’s all about choices, you choose what you eat and the quality of the food. At least that’s what I learned so far in my journey, I hope it helps everyone.
I am 38 and ‘5 9..194lbs…sometime i eat 800 cal and sometime less or more but never go over 2000cal. I eat mosly oat mill grits veggies beans meats..will I get sick and get me deficient in vitamins and immune system.
Why don’t you reveal how many calories you eat every day with your Nuts, Avocados and Salmon. Are you saying you eat 3000 calories and it doesn’t affect you because its better whole foods?
Anyone have the facts on CICO non fasting how much it lowers your metabolic rate?
No Lunch Meat Wrapls… Listeria Risk (Heat Over 165f)

Shelley, I just want to thank you for all of your hard work and all of your videos, because you truly are brilliant at giving out information in an interesting and charming way.:-) You are also very down to earth, well informed and experienced I can tell, from having studied nutrition and health for about 20 years now. I really enjoy watching your videos and agree with everything you’re saying in them.:-)
I’m eating 1500 calories and burning 1000 a day is that a good calories in vs out? Or should I burn more calories? I normally eat more but there’s no gyms open so I’m limited so I lowered my calorie intake from 2000.. Thanks in advance
I think I’m pretty lean, and I get super cold when fasting. Usually starts around 20hrs in
I do the low carb system and it is by far the most effective and healthiest way for me to lose weight. Seems to be the easiest too.
Love your videos. This week I have been working on eating better and I have been using the Fitness app. I’m doing well with the calories and carbs right now but was a little confused. These video answered one of my questions. Thanks!
youll still lose weight period. but your heart will explode in your chest.
In my teenage years my best friend and I’ve had eaten a lot of junk foods, and I mean a lot. Pizzas, chocolates etc. Never cared about calories. I’ve always been skinny, but my friend on the other hand has always been fat. Given that we were spending most of the time together and eating the similar amount of foods, sometimes I even had eaten more as I didn’t have any weight problems, we could never explain why he was gaining weight and I’ve never did, but I do know that it would have been just irresponsible for me to say that he was just over eating and that he didn’t understand calories.
Because tribes walked miles and miles and miles for one meal you fool stop spreading lies
So calories cause diabetes? Lol. Doctors don’t know jack shit about eating.
Liked and subscribed. Thank you for the information doc! Wish more people would follow you instead of the 90 pound anorexics preaching weight loss!
Thank God you are muscular and good looking and some people will give merit to what you are saying based on that because unfortunately people don’t judge with their head any more. Can’t believe that tool is influencing almost 1M people
It’s funny to see how people are watching the content partially or not at all and are leaving comments and judging the message. Funny.
This girl is the perfect example of someone stupid trying to act smart. She is doing harm to people watching this and taking it for granted.
So stupid… Let’s just not listen to science and all the studies and rather listen to her cause she seems to know what she’s talking about… Smh
Spot on, exactly what I experienced over 30 years of dieting strategies.
Great video! I definitely don’t have a low body fat % and I feel cold MOST of the time. Sometimes my hands and feet actually start to feel numb with cold, and they look blue and purple. Any idea why that might be??
I’m still 50lbs overweight and about 35% bodyfat (AFTER losing over 100lbs already) and I still get cold when I fast. At first when I had only lost about 20lbs of the 100 I’ve lost I wasn’t cold during fasting. I should have paid more attention to when I first noticed it and what my weight was at the time. But one things for sure, I’m still really fat and I do get cold fasting all the time. I do dry and wet fasts and that doesn’t seem to matter; I get just as cold dry fasting as I do wet fasting. It’s pretty noticeable too. I find that I have to raise the temperature about 8-10 degrees F to compensate. So this has nothing to do with winter vs summer etc, I’m going strictly by temperature. Just my personal observations.
Hi doctor, need the office number to schedule an appointment please. Quick question, so I dont have to count carbs? just calories? As A diabetic i need to count both i guess cause carbs spike my sugar levels
wow yall arr so annoying and corny as fck cant watch one video. n this has never happened with anyone else, but you both.
Pls delete this video, it’s so misleading to a lot of people who might believe this bullshit
How many calories should a female 5 foot 1 should eat a day?
Love and respect you. New subscriber. Thanks for all the information
Really good. I would just add that for me, high fat high protein diet has led to maintaining CI. When high carb and sugar burning I eat more and struggle maintaining CI.
Thank you for making these videos, they are very helpful and we appreciate you sharing your expertise!
Look at this way calories are measured in a lab. No cell in the body uses a calorie. The body uses nutrients to make atp not calories. Calories is just an external tool to give us an idea of how much energy we are using.
Insulin is the key to weight loss. Calories in and out has been debunked. Hormones control weight gain. Its that simple.
Awesome video cleared up so much confusion about this subject thanks for the explanation
2000 cals of sugar vs fish. Your dna and bone marrow is made from what You eat. You ARE WHAT YOU EAT
one of the best youtube channel who gives true knowledge… thanks a lot
According to my meal/weight calculator, to lose 2 pounds per week I need to eat 3400 calories. I am very carb sensitive so I stay between 30-75 carbs per day while eating the 3400 calories. I’m 3 weeks in to dieting and 1 week in to the low carb part. I feel wonderful and hope this works out for me.
Would you make a video on Bread and Why Allot people Say It’s bad for your health.
I do keto and was told I have a slow metabolism. Anyone have any info why that is?
.. calories are literally a unit of energy… so you’re saying energy in vs energy out doesn’t work?.. so if you burn more energy than you intake you won’t lose weight?..
Great video! Thanks for taking the time to cut through the confusion and verbalize this in a way that makes sense to the masses
Lol I feel like not everyone saw your video till the end with all the comments regarding the calories counting… I need to count mine, approximately, and it works. But it mainly works cause I get really conscious about my mindless snacking. Nice video, I get what you mean, thanks a lot!
You should do an experiment where one of you eats clean and one eats whatever, same amount calories, same workout
It has been proven many times and in any articles that weight gain and weight loss is fundamentally a hormonal question, not a calorie question.
You can still say it’s a calories problem, but when calories IN influence calories OUT, and you readjust your calories IN everytime to create this deficit, you fail to understand the link between the 2: hormones.
Any person with a diabetes problem, hormonal problem, thyroid problem will tell you the same thing.
What you eat, and when you eat, will have an impact on your calories out. So you can still say that in the end, it’s calories in vs calories out, but without looking at the overall picture, strategies to create this deficit, it’s useless. In other words, depending on food and meal time choices, you will have a easier or harder time creating this deficit, and maintain it on the long run. Thus, it’s not just calories in vs calories out.
Great video as always Thomas!!! Just something that I am wondering is does being in a caloric deficit while doing IF harm me if my goal is fat loss? Would love to know your thoughts on this.
Omg Shelley yes that’s me! Hi fat since childbirth. Curvy and “big boned” ever since. That would be the last 20 years. I would lose then gain more and no matter what I do I would never lose the weight permanently. I’m done with all that! And I love food.
So I follow you and Elle Ip. You’re my 2 gurus. Chloe Tings workouts are pretty good too. But I’m still studying her. Anyway tq for your constant reminders that life happens and we can overcome this battle of the bulge by using common sense and consistency to get permanent results. Love u gurl!
You both are literally the same person just split at conception lol. I can never tell who is who because you have the exact same personalities.
FOR FREE! track your food calories easily with manual template and simple web app I found so interesting! https://healthwatcherdaily.lpages.co/7-day-calories-watcher/
Charles poliquin, Mark sisson and most low carbers seem pretty ripped. It obviously works better.
Great content Sean. I’ve been witnessing the same for 1 year.
I love you. As in, you’re cool, and you say things that make sense. Also, you’re adorable funny. <3
Insulin and hormones play a role so type matters…high insulin will not let ur body release fat stores…so losing FAT is not just about ci co but hormonal environment in the body
Two of my favorite people I’ve never met. I used to shop where Mike shops often too… LOL.
Makes me sad to see a guy like Layne Norton paint himself into a corner on this issue.
We’re not boilers.
I see u like getting tht fade these days Sean, makes u look like ur in the army
Calories for a 14 year old boy 5 foot 6 weighing 126 pounds i want to maintain my weight not loose
Are you on drugs or just an idiot? Ignorance can be fixed, please get help
Great video! Why do most coaches make something so simple so hard to understand.
Thank you so much for your video bro. Great one. This is why I’ve been doing Intermittent fasting, in my channel I talk almost daily about that. The best thing you can do is fasting in order to lose weight and become healthier. Too much food in your body is harmful.
I’m a healthy BMI but dun feel cold on fasts. I do have hyperhydosis which is a weird variant to add to the mix.
I think it’s true, it’s all calories in vs. calories out, but the caveat is protein. If you want to make gains/lose fat, you gotta have the adequate amount of protein, and the rest of your caloric intake can come from carbs/fats, doesn’t matter that much. Imagine 3 cases, each with 2,000 calorie intake.
Case 1: 2,000 calories of cake, cornbread, bacon grease and buttermilk biscuits. No gains because no protein just a bunch of fat and bullshit carbs. You’d probably just gain fat or lose muscle like this (depending if 2000 calories is a caloric deficit or surplus for you) You’ll probably feel like shit all the time too.
Case 2: 2,000 calories of bro foods, including 30% of that coming from good protein sources, the rest complex carbs and healthy fats like coconut/olive oil. You gonna make gains or lose fat (again depending on surplus/deficit). You’ll feel great in the gym, but you’ll probably fucking hate eating.
Case 3: 2,000 calories of a mix of the above. 30% of calories coming from protein. The other 70% can be any kinds of carbs or fats that you want, as long as you don ‘t go over your caloric intake. You could eat ribs & mac&cheese as long as you could measure that shit accurately. You’ll make gains because you’re getting protein and the proper amount of calories. Common IIFYM approach.
Case 3 seems to be the best of both worlds, but the hardest part about that is measuring your foods right. You can’t measure shit when eating out. Or if you just cook up some ribs and mac and cheese you probably have no accurate idea of how many calories are in that shit. So in theory, case 3 seems great, but in practice it’s hard as hell to follow. Most likely you’ll end up over or underestimating the calories, which is why it’s hard to make gains on a diet like that.
At the end of the day it comes down to accurate measure of calories & protein day after day. The best way to do that is Case 2.
It should also be noted that the types of carbs/fats that you consume make a difference in your hormonal and energetic states. So even if you could follow Case 3 accurately, completely replacing sweet potatoes with table sugar, or replacing olive oil with bacon grease will affect your hormones and energy.
That’s the way I think about it. Agree?
Can you make a video about when it’s time to cut calories after reverse dieting? How long should you reverse and how do you know when to cut when you are slowly gaining weight
This has literally made me feel better on how I eat!! Thank you!!
they have such fun with this I like the ‘calm down’ part; u ever make house calls hahaha
Hey, you guys are identical twins, right? Have you experimented with nutrition (one person eats junks, and the other eats healthy stuff) while keeping exercise constant and identical for the both of you? I’m sure a lot of us would be interested in seeing the results.
the end had me weak lmao. It sound like Kevins laugh at the end was looped before it got cut XD
I believe not the only way to count carbs. I think more important to calculate kalories. If its lower than I need, then I loose weight. If i eat more then I need, then i fatter.
It’s incredibly disheartening how quickly the weight piles on once you come off keto. I came off as I was having some real performance issues while trying to get back into competitive MMA. Literally feeling like I was running out of fuel pretty quickly into my sessions, most fighters I know have tried keto and came off it for this reason. Ultimately I’ve discovered that there appears to be a balance that differs from person to person, for me low (not keto low) carbs seem to have been my ‘sweet spot’ keeping it around 100-150g (I’m around 200lbs) and putting them in earlier in the day (I know the theory of eating them later is better but it puts weight on me) coupled with a 12 hour eating window worked for me. Folks need to be less into skating each others views and realise that folks situations are all different, what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for everyone. I’ve learned a lot from Thomas and other nutrition guys on the web but had too conduct my own experiments to see what works for me as an athlete!
Calories in calories out is physics. Hormones, metabolism and all that is part of calories out. This could’ve been a 1 minute video.
You should most definitely team up with Mike again!!! Loved the video Thomas
Completely ignorant and dangerous rubbish from start to finish. Please don’t listen to this person, she is foolish and irresponsible.
She actually defines herself as an idiot in the video, the only accurate thing in the whole video.
Sir question in the last study you mentioned there was no weight loss..does that mean that there were not fat loss also? Im just wondering maybe the no weight loss was somehow affected by some muscle gain? Thanks sir

BBQ RIBS!!!! 3 weeks into fasting. Best shape ever! I eat bro food some times. But I also eat some bullshit food too.
Been working KETO for a few months technically obese. I’M ALWAYS COLD! Exception during and after exercise. I was hopeful a better metabolism would change my comfort temp. Thank you for all your helpful info. I’m learning hard core.

I get really cold and I still have about 50 lbs of weight left to use. I have lost 107 lbs in a year.
I was very skinny and after changing my diet I finally started seeing results. I didn’t know anything about training and diet, but my friend told me for the website called Next Level Diet and I just followed their diet and training plan. They have amazing tips 😉 check it out
I did no carbs or sugar, (basically just eating meat and vegetables) and made sure to drink lots of water, and I lost 15 pounds in one month.
