The right size for fitness walking shoes will be a size to a size and a half larger than your dress shoes because your feet swell while walking. Try on shoes later in the day or right after walking so your feet will have swollen to the larger size they grow to during a walk. Shoes should feel great when you put them on.Your heel should fit comfortably in the shoe with a minimum amount of slipping the shoes should not ride up and down on your heel when you walk. Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right.
Then take them home and spend some time walking on carpet to make sure the fit is a good one.Measure your feet each time you buy shoes, because your foot size can change gradually over years. Stand while your foot is measured to get the most accurate measurement. If one foot is larger than the other, try on a pair that fits your larger foot. Try on both shoes and check the fit.
Wiggle your toes.Yet most people are wearing improperly fitted shoes according to the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA). Lightbox Image #5 Let us do a quick sizing check and analysis of your foot and flex points and get you into a shoe designed and shaped to support your special unique feet.
Finding the right shoe There is no single prescription for the best shoe, because everyone’s feet are different. “I encourage fitness walkers to get running shoes, because they provide more support,” Dierkes says. She even recommends getting fitted at a specialized running shoe store instead of your local sporting goods store. The fit of your shoe is critical to your stride—here’s how to get it right. 73% of African Americans said they did not have emergency funds to cover three months of expenses.
Walk or run around the store a bit to make sure they feel good in action. Use the rule of thumb. There should be about 3/8-1/2 inch between the front of your big toe and the end of the shoe.
Even walking shoes differ from running shoes. go to an athletic shoe specialty store to get an expert insight on the right shoe and the best fit. “The staff there will do a real fitting.Try to get the tips of your toes to touch the front inside of the shoes. Assuming you’ve laced the shoes snugly, the shoes shouldn’t let you move that far forward. Shoes stretch and widen slightly with use over time. If your toes can already touch the front of the shoes when the shoes are new, try.
Make sure that you wear your regular walking gear, including socks, when you go to try on a new pair of walking shoes. Shoes that fit correctly in dress socks or thin socks may be too tight in thicker, walking socks. The closer you can match your ideal walking conditions, the better fit you’ll get. Here are some general guidelines to consider when getting fitted for a new pair of walking shoes: Have the salesperson take dimensions of both feet since there may be differences. Take measurements while standing, as feet expand when bearing weight.
Base new shoe size on these measurements, not on previous shoe size.Measure the arch length. An important part of the shoe fit is the arch length.
The arch length is measured from your heel to the ball of your foot (where your big toe joint bends). The bend in your big toe should match with where the shoe bends.Ask for a wider (or narrower) width.
If the boots you’re trying on don’t come wide or narrow enough, try a pair that offers more widths to choose from. If you have small feet, try on children’s boots and shoes. Bonus: They’re often cheaper than adult footwear.Try on shoes with socks or any special inserts you normally would wear.
Allow a 3/8-inch to half-inch space from the tip of your longest toe to the tip of your shoes. The longest toe is usually either the great toe or the second toe.For example, a “flip flop” sandal puts stress on the toes because toes must grip the shoe to keep it on the foot while walking.
If you do purchase a sandal, choose one that has one or more straps to secure around your ankle for added stability. In addition, a sandal with a.

Half a size larger than your street or dress shoes? I always do the opposite half size smaller base on my own experience with skiing boots, good snuggly fit like a second layer of skin so your feet don’t slip side to side to prevent injury. Just a personal oppinion.
Tighter laces! Of course. I just got back from a hike during which my feet were sliding down my boot during descents. It is painful! No one else is explaining how to avoid this. Thank you so much.
super well done video. extremely professional and well marketed. made me want to do business with you and hike in England:)
we need this here. seriously. carbonear newfoundland. or st. johns even if it isn;t already.
Great vid! Headin to the Rockies in July and also the Manitou Incline…..WISH ME LUCK.
Awesome service. I wish we had Cotswold Outdoor stores here in the States.
Meindl!❤ Great and excellent service. We also have a store like this here in The Netherlands called Bever Sport.
Too bad i live in Jamaica im a security officer and my company wears combat boots and i have a huge problem with these shoes and my feet i cant seem to find any comfort
When I’m scaling Everest I don’t need boots because I’m always riding a goat. Easy. Relaxing. Free milk, too…
In this video you can see that ‘Steve’ really likes mincing around in outdoor shops.
I suffer with Plantar fasciitis which I think is linked to me buying poor quality walking shoes. Would your shoe assistants be able to advise on which boot would be best for me?
Thanks for the info, i bought a pair of boots online the same size as my normal shoe size, they never fitted right! With this info the next pair will fit like a glove many thanks,
I’m in the market for a new pair of boots and have difficulty getting them to fit this has lead to blisters galore. I take it this video is still current and this service is still provided as standard?
The real test is when you have spent a week or two trying them out. Leather and fabric loosens up and the shoe isn’t comfortable anymore. I would spend the money to have custom made hiking boots. My foot is wide at the front and narrow at the arch and heel. Hard the find good shoes.
In my experience Cotswolds Outdoor is a very good outdoor retailer. The Bicester store is really good. That said I bought my last pair of hill walking boots from Fishers in Keswick and the service was superb
Good video. I came here because my big toenails are in terrible shape and bruised. A foot doctor told me that my shoes were too small at the toe exactly what this video is saying.
I love the video it is the exact opposite of how your Edinburgh store deal with you.
This guy is kinda scary… Also, good info. I don’t think i’ll ever forget.
If I get that kind of fitting, I’d have no problems paying RRP
Just what I need. Find a fitting boot and then order it for half the price on Amazon.
Thanks for this video. I laced both pairs of my boots as recommended this week and it was 100% better. Thank you, wish I had known this 20 years ago.
A pity there are no stores likes this in my country. I’m sick of going to stores who do the same shit like the others and have stupid salesperson who have no idea what they are selling
i have a Lasportiva pair of boots and they run a little big, what can i do to have a better fit?
, besides wearing thicker socks
You should be proud of yourself!
I really like seeing how enthusiastic you are about these products and how you explain what to look for in the boot alongside with perks of product and the flaws of these products. I trust your guidance thank you.
I went there over the weekend, brilliant foot and boot sizing service. Quite a few things I didn’t know about my feet; one foot is slightly bigger than the other. We tried lots of different boots on and was surprised on how different each boot (regardless of being the same marketed size) fitted differently. I narrowed it down to the Salomon 4D 3 GTX boot as it was incredibly comfortable for my foot anatomy. Highly recommended.
Struggling to find the best fitting footwear?
Watch this video to find out more about how our expert staff can help you choose and fit your perfect walking boots.
I was trying on some walking shoes last week. The member of staff suggested I have my feet measured but didn’t seem keen and after waiting 5 minutes I asked if he would measure my feet. Another customer came in who was known to the staff and I was left on my own at that point. I left the shop and bought some shoes online, knowing what size to order.
Hi! I’m currently trying to search for trekking shoes and i’m going to use the shoes for camping and field works in forested areas here in the Philippines (a tropical SE Asian country) such as open-woodland and rainforests. I want shoes that is waterproof and breathable at the same time with excellent traction/grip in slippery areas, preferably midcut for protection during hiking while carrying heavy loads but also light weight since i walk fast haha. I have sweaty feet so its quite an issue. Suggestions about variety of shoes to choose from is highly appreciated. Thank you:)
I went into the Bury St Edmunds store a few months ago and the guy there was amazingly helpful. I said that I probably wouldn’t be getting any boots there and then but that had no bearing. He spent ages going through all the options, knew his stuff and nothing was too much trouble. Very rare level of service these days. If only BT were like Cotswolds.
The years of lacing boots, I’d have never thought of that. Learn something new every day.
remember… u r limited by boot makers sizes. and super feet ONLY consume more space in shoe!!! people w wide feet… 4get it!!!!
I wish there is a store like this in Sydney, Australia. There isn’t any shop as professional as this over here unfortunately.
Well, as was alluded to by a commenter a year ago, there is promotional video and then there is reality. Cotswold Outdoors is certainly one of the better outdoor shops here in Britain but my experience of going there to get a new pair of boots once was nothing like this video. I mentioned the boot fitting service, and essentially the staff (mid to late 20s) did everything possible to avoid having to do anything detailed in this video (none of the measurement analysis, foot shape etc). It was, as with most stores selling any footwear these days, the customer pretty much left to fit things themselves while the staff member just watched passively until you pulled out the payment card and the extent of boot recommendations being pointing to the most expensive boots on offer, first and foremost. I’m sorry, but it was nothing like the video. I understand each store has better staff than others, but let’s be realistic, staff are trained as sales staff and the amount of attention given (or not) to customers is based on guess-timate judgements around perceived age and spending potential of those they see walk through the door.
Hi. Should one wear thick socks, thin socks or no socks when fitting the shoes (leather shoes, leather boots, sneakers, boxing shoes, etc.)? Thank you. God bless, Proverbs 31
I want to choose a boat to use in the city, not for outdoor, so it should not slip on surfaces like parquet, which would you suggest?
1.Salomon XA PARO 3D MİD GTX
2.Salomon X ULTRA 3 MİD GTX
3.Salomon QUEST 4D 3 GTX
4.Merrell MOAB FST 2 MİD GTX
Always a pleasure to buy outdoor footwear in the South Cerny shop.
People need to realise, just because the shoes or boots seem to fit better, does not necessarily mean they’re better for the rest of the body.
As people elevate their heals, they put more pressure on their spine, especially their lumbar (lower back).
Also, it is not advisable to use innersoles that have a hard cupped heal, or other orthotic-style innersoles, unless prescribed by a podiatrist. Often the person needs to strengthen their foot and ancle muscles instead.
(I’m a licensed PT with several rehabilitation certifications, including ancle and foot re-hab.)
Basically, it’s worth doing your research, rather than just going by what a sales person suggests (trained or not), such as seeking professional advice from a podiatrist, exercise physiologist, physiotherapist etc.
Excelente, daría mucho gusto que nuestras tiendas atendieran a sus clientes como lo hacen ustedes. Un cordial saludo y sigan mejorando.
O my good grief I’d love to find a store like that in the US. I have very wide feet that are hard to fit. I hate buying shoes at all because of it!
Do you mean that there should be this gap after you’re already wearing all the socks you usually wear. I have about thumb width with my normal socks, but as I put in double socks the way I use at hiking, there is maybe a index finger of space after pushing my toes to the tip of the boot. But when I go one size up to 46, I don’t feel my foot touching anything, even if I stand on my toes my toes wont touch the tip of the boot and as I walk, my foot doesn’t really rattle around with the double sock, but I don’t feel contact with my heel or toes, I feel like my feet are in empty space while the boot is secured around my ankle. So.. is 45 good? Or is the bigger 46 better? 46 obviously feels warmer, since the boot doesn’t seem to compress the sock much at all. I tried these two sizes back and forth, walking around for like 30 minutes and couldn’t make up my mind. Help me out if you can.
liked the advertising looking forward to go to the nearest shop.
is this service offered in all the stores or is it only larger stores?
Hello man. Can you gave me your shop add and your email id.
I order one boot..
Regards
Richard new delhi
India.
Wow!! I changed how I tie my boots and I can feel a huge difference. Better blood flow to the legs and less pressure on the ankle!!
My boot fits perfectly length wise. Width? Completely unwearable!
that’s what I call a professional shoes shop. I wish each shop with outdoor equipment has such professional service.
the boots showed in this video are Meindl Borneo 2. I tried them in a shop last September. they were very comfortable for me, but the problem is, they have to low rubber protection on the toe.
Wow, great video for an obviously outstanding store & service! Do you pay for shipping—that is, shipping me to you? Haha
I’ve been told that its best to buy hiking boots which are a half-size larger than your normal boots / shoes. Is this correct?
Nifty tips. Also important is to put your feet backward (and not forward) in the boot while tying it. This goes for any shoe or boot, by the way. In my younger years, I put them on wrong because I put my foot forward too much. Done it that way for years until somebody straightened me out on how to properly fit a hiking boot. It’s amazing how something as seemingly simple as putting on footwear can go wrong.:P
Thanks, good video. One thing though. When he puts his foot at the back of the insole… Is that to where it would sit on the insole (i.e. not right to the back) or actually right to the back?
I feel my running shoes are slightly tight than my other string running shoes
So Should I change it?
Looking at these Meindl Vakuum boots, but worried they are too heavy/hot/overkill for the UK, as I live in Cambridgeshire, and the majority of my walking is on relatively flat ground, however, I plan to do more of a proper ‘hill walk’ once a month, and a mountain / large hill / scramble (like Crib Goch) maybe once a year any suggestions? I hate my feet getting too hot so I’m a bit concerned about these being heavy / full leather.
The other pair I’m considering are the Scarpa Marmolada Trek boots, but I can’t find much about them, compared to the Meindl boots.
Lol the comments are exactly what I expected. Really useful information, but omg blink
My RM60 old power shoes fit better with the 2cm insole pad than the new RM230 Reebok shoes even with a air cushion heel pad. Sometimes, doesn’t mean if we pay more it’s a product of good quality or going to make us comfortable.
Thanks, this helped a lot. Just got the Project Rock 1’s and figuring out 10.5 or 11’s. Thanks again.
Can someone tell me what is the model for that a)Nike shoe at 0:26, and b)the shoe insert at 0:40? Thanks!
Please suggest.. I recently bought a Nike sport shoe of size 24.5cm UK size 5 whereas my foot size is 23.7cm.. Are these pair of shoes perfect for me? Should I replace it with UK size 6?
I went there and they gave me boots that last me 3 months because they are too small
I think Meindls are great, though haven’t ordered yet. But my next boots are definitely going to be Meindls
Hello guys, i need your oponion!
I bought Asics gel nimbus 19 (27.5 cm). The length of my right foot is 26.4 cm, and the left 26.5 cm. Do you think it’s okay? I have space in my fingers, and when the sneakers are not tied, the heel comes out of the sneakers while walking.
This was absolutely perfect precise and toe the point! Thanks for the video super helpful
With the lack of consistency in shoe fitment between manufacturers, even among their own models, and making changes when the next latest and greatest model of the same shoe comes out (marketing hype/scam to sell shoes) proper fit is a crapshoot.
My foot measures 11 1/4″, which on a Brannock is a 12. WIthout sizing up my Kayano 22 half a thumb width of room so they run larger than 12. Tried on a Nimbus 19 in size 12 and there was no room at all. they didn’t have a 13 to try and I was swimming in a 14. My foot measures 4 1/4″ wide, which on charts is a D. D feels fine. Yet on a Brannock i’m middle of a C/B.
No substitute to simply trying them on.
What to do if we get wrong shoe size and cant even replace and cant even get new one my shoes are not comfortable… when i walk in them my left leg knee get clash within bones n plus the shoes are too broad….. n i have a flat foot please help…..
hey, are you guys planning on showing off the new balance sd200v1’s soon?
Unfortunately, my right foot is much narrower than my left foot. If I use a Ritz Stick or Brannock device and take the size shoe that is meant for my larger left foot, that size shoe causes my right foot to slosh around inside my right shoe even with the shoe tightly laced up!!!
The shoe clerk suggested that I buy two pairs of shoes of different sizes so that each foot would have a properly fitting shoe; and that I should throw out or donate the (unused) shoe from each pair that is the wrong size!!! I don’t think so!!!
Darn Tough Socks (merino wool). Lifetime guarantee. You’re welcome.
WRONG. The Brannock device is an outdated tool as it has been shown in major studies to be wrong for over 90% of people, especially for width. The best way to confirm the best fit is to do the “insole test”. Remove the insole of the shoe and stand on it to ensure the toes and the balls do not overhang the insole. A study done with 406 people proved this was far superior to the Brannock device and even 3-d scanning.
whens the last time you seen a brannock device in a finish line or foot locker and if so would the sales person know how to use it
i’m 14 years old and i wear size 11 and 12 shoes
its bad if i buy a size 13 of lebrons soldier 8?
i’m young, so my feet can still growing
he looks like he wants Spiderman pictures on his desk by noon
I’m 14 in length and a 2a across what shoes would. I. beable to wear
In the video, you said the ball slide on the skeleton foot called for an 8, whereas length called for a 7. Why wouldn’t the right shoe be the larger of the two values?
I was recently measured twice for a boot; the first guy used one of those digital plates that you stand on and he said I needed a 9. The second guy used a Brannock device and said that I need 10.5, based on the ball slide. He said the digital device is terribly inaccurate and thought that I have always been wearing shoes that were too small, based on my arch length, rather than foot length. He said one symptom of that is that the shoe wears on the outside, which is true for me.
My problem is why are the manufactures not using size widths like b-c-d or e. Most all shoes today only sell one width for each size shoe. If you have a wide foot, you must go to a much longer shoe than you need. This looks bad and makes you look like your wearing skies. The best I have seen yet was a regular or wide shoe. Not good enough.
Cool this is what I need to know in my shoe job. Its still a mystery to me. Now after watching this I know exactly what to measure in order to get the right shoes. Most importantly getting the right fitting.
