What’s the Longest Walk-able Distance on Earth?

Long distance walking can mean walking a long distance in a set time, usually a day. There’s no set figure, but if you walk more than 20 miles in a day it’s a long distance walk. Another meaning of long distance walk relates to the total distance walked not the time taken to walk it.Before attempting a marathon walk-26.2 miles-most long distance walking experts agree that you should be walking at least 15 miles per week, walking at least 4 or 5 days per week. You should also have been walking for exercise for at least 3 months before you begin training for a marathon distance.
If you’re comfortable with walking 30 to 45 minutes per day at least five days per week, aim for a 10 mile to 20 kilometer event. If you’ve been walking for at least a year and are walking 45 to 60 minutes, 6 to 7 days per week, you can safely begin training for a longer charity walk or race, or—for the truly ambitious—even a 26 mile marathon.Long-distance walking also allows you to get out farther into nature, and explore more interesting areas than a short walk around the office or around the block. You can find hills to walk up and down, as well as other varied terrain to make walks more challenging.

Another lovely video Haha, rain just comes with the lakes doesn’t it? We got completely drenched last time we were out there and were so scared we’d ruin our new camera. Do you have trouble with yours in the rain? Don’t think we would’ve got ours out if it was raining that hard.
“Hiker feet” is a term I have not heard yet. Everyone talks about getting their “hiker legs”, but if the feet can’t go, the legs aren’t going anywhere. Did you find that your small feet hindered you or helped you or neither on your long distance hike?
Anyone interested in this vid needs to watch the Levison Wood documentary where he walks the length of the Nile. Absolutely crazy series
Thank you Mary. As usual so informative and inspirational. Blessings
Hey!! Amazing! Where are you know? We are currently walking from Portugal to Turkey (around 10,000km). We are now in the Italian Alps and will reach Slovenia in a while, would be amazing to meet you on the way! Cheers
Sad part is half that is through the Middle East. If your lucky you might survive the walk but more than likely you won’t.
I was with my mom and i walked from Athens,Greece to Belgrade, Serbia don’t say that for a ten year.
old its notfar?
Imagine the fact that long ago traveling was done mostly on foot
Really great start Hannah, despite the rain I thought you did well to film anything! Fingers crossed the weather improves for you on the next leg of your adventure.
This channel should be called “simple questions with a 10 minute answer”
Person in the future that did the longest walk on earth: yeah I got inspired by this reallifelorevideo
tempting to do this route but make it even longer by avoiding south sudan and syria lmao
Great video. Excellent information. I could listen to you read the phone book as well with that lilt in your voice.
too bad somewhere near the end, you cut your hair and shaved. i was hoping you grew your beard just like gandalf lol, hahahahaah
Walking from South Africa to Russia or vice-versa means having to pass through Israel proper. That means walking from:
Russia requires walking through North Sudan, known for denying entry to any traveller with evidence of having travelled through Israel proper (including stamps showing entry into Egypt/Jordan or exit from either Arab country)
South Africa means walking through Syria which, aside from being plagued by civil war, has a border agency known for denying travellers with evidence of having crossed into or out of Israel proper via Egypt or Jordan
Oh… So that’s the walk my dad said he was going for when I was 3
I mean technically if you got on the ferry and walked in place that wouldn’t be cheating right?
Enjoyed watching this Andrewthanks! My travels on the Camino last year whet my appetite for long distance walks, and this looks lovely.
It looks like you’re wearing a day pack throughout. Did you have gear / extra clothes transported between accommodations, and/or wash clothes on the way?
Thanks much
Why he didn’t finish all the way in Russia?? There is still land on the map

Ibn Battuta got pretty close, but a different starting point
I’d walk it the other way, so I’d feel like I’m walking down hill
Welcome to another episode of what quarantine is making me watch!
Hi, what a great project:) What is the name of the trail you follow the last bit to nordkapp along the border? Couldnt quite catch it in the video. Greatings from Norway and best of luck:)
There was actually a man named Mario Rigby who walked from Cape Town to Cairo and he got bitten by a snake twice, got malaria, got arrested 7 times in 3 countries, and got shot at by rebels
Mary, you are amazing. Thank you again for a wonderful video. Your strength and confidence are contagious. Your videos inspire me to jump up and hike out the door!
Keep going to NAUKAN, ya wuss, it’s only a few centimeters to the right (on a map), so you can take pictures of Diomede island, or even walk to Alaska in winter, if the Bering is iced.
Long story short
Don’t walk through Africa until you don’t want a handful of malaria
A friend of my father made it from Southafrica to Kairo in 1 and a half year
Cracking video hannah pitty about the weather looking forward to seeing part two atvb Jimmy
I still think humans landing on the moon is the biggest achievement
Hey i wish you best luck on your trail. Are you still on your way to Norway? Keep us updated;)
I’m planning a very similar route but i don’t want to go through whole Germany, so after Switzerland i would like to go Czech republic, Poland, Baltic states, Finland, Sweden and Norway.
But i am having a lot of trouble planning the routes, how did you plan and find all the E trail parts and GR and other trails? Any resource to plan all this would be so helpful
A great walk in the most loverly scenery.Takes me back to holidays in the 196/7/8/9 not been their since 2010 miss the mountains and friendship of friends that. Lived in Edinbrough thanks for the nice memories.
The longest distance I can go from where I am right now is about 20 feet. Start walking 20 feet where I am, and bam! Right into a wall.
Could you please prepare a video about how much on avarage one could walk throughout his/her life and with that distance how far we can go through space.
Wait why was he on a plane if he was supposed to be walking the whole way
Real enjoyable watch and just wish it had been a bit longer. After my resent hernia operation, I have not been able to get over the lakes for the last 4 weeks and really missing it, so the next best thing is watching others. Dam shame about the weather but good that it cleared up later and I hate walking passed cows, after a very unpleasant experience with them about 4 years ago. Good to hear there will be more instalments of this walk and I hope you, your dad and his bad knee have a great walk tomorrow! Cheers Alan
Fun fact! Snakes don’t usually run.
Fun fact 2! You wouldn’t be car jacked.
I walked from Switzerland to Bangladesh but I “cheated” acording to this video, I took a few ferries for short hops along the way.
The only thing a learned in this video was that Africa is dangerous
Holy moly if pokemon go was a thing then when you started…
It’s basically just that when you get to turkey you are pretty safe
What do they say in the states Hannah, ’embrace the suck.’ I think you did just that very cool! I don’t have one but a camera bag for the chest or waste would be handy. Good going pizza sounded nice. Mark
There’s literally an option to remove ferries from Google routes
I am a long distance walker and I could do this if I did not have to work 40 hours a week:(
Very jealous, looking forward to the rest of your videos. I think it passes my favourite cafe ever, Chester’s by the river
Great advice on preparation, especially on diet, vitamin supplements and electrolytes.
Excellent video from someone who hiked over 2,000 miles so you should know. Thank you!!!! I delayed my hike of the AT until March 2021. Hope to see your comments in the future. John from MI
Great advice, Mary. Thanks for taking the time to share your experiences so thoughtfully.
The number one thing is have extra matches and earn clothes you can survive without food but if you get lost and cold you are in bad shape
Thanks for a nice video!
I completed The Great Glen Way last fall and checked this out as nice reminder.
Planning of completing the West Highland Way next summer/early fall.
I was legit starting to plan to do this when I turn 22, then I saw the estinated time, and then Africa, and yeah…. no thx 😉
If you go right in Jordan and go all the way to the border between china and North Korea, then back through Russia untill you encounter say Lisbon, that would be way longer
I dont understand. Is it not possible to walk longer into russia? Like all the way up the bering sea close to alaska?
Great video. This walk is really worth doing one day. Andrew, you mentioned the canal is very busy with 1300 vessels a year; that is an average of 4 per day. Is it still considered a pretty intense traffic as far as this canal is concerned?
RealLifeLore: “No one has ever walked this far.”
Me: “Then how did humans make it from Africa to America?”
Looks like you haven’t heard of Levison Wood…. He’d probably do it
Awesome information. You are doing so good informing others of how to be a successful thru-hike. Thank you.

Another great film Mary, you’re an inspiration. I love that you prove the doubters wrong, go on lass
Hi, I like your videos. Curious-what camera are you shooting with? Looks great!
Hello future people who will get this video in their recommendation
Great route! It was very very wet when I did it too! Looking forward to Part two! Atb
LG Lulu

It’s been two years since the video came out, have you finished and if yes how long did it take you
Now gonna check this comment after 10 years when YouTube again recommends this
The main thing is to test out stuff before you go take a few hikes for a few days but if you have never hiked before or backpacked you are in for alot of adversity due simply to stupidity
I would probably do it under a few conditions:
I get to bring along the squad.
It’s sponsored and paid for by Red Bull, but any company is fine. Red Bull is just “that sponsor.”
I have some kind of security because… I mean, look where we’re going. I better be strapped the whole time too.
Just walk in a circle around any streets and you could travel longer
The day 1 went quite well with a bit of rain (but it seems not too bad actually ☺️) we look forward to the next one
Me after watching this video: Damn he walked from germany to China? I want to try that too!
Also me: Wait-
Brilliant, lovely video footage, will have to pay it a visit one day, thanks for sharing……
Sup everyone, welcome to The Longest Way! YouTube recommendations brought you here, didn’t they? Well, I hope you enjoyed it a bit. If you’re an über cool online person like me, then add me on insta: christophrehage
Peace.
This will be such an amazing experience! Fingers crossed and best of luck for you!:)
Hope I can join you on some nice stretches 😉
Your film conveys just how wet and cold you were. Well done.Looking forward to Day 2.
I’ve noticed a slight error in my research that went into this video. The route that I presented in this video still features a ferry across the Aldan River in Russia! So if you’re gonna do it idk, maybe just like swim across it you know? It’s probably safer than walking through some of the other countries. Anyway, if you wanna watch documentaries that don’t feature goofy mistakes head over to CuriosityStream and watch everything for free for 31 days: https://www.curiositystream.com/reallifelore
Great start, typical Cumbrian weather rain! I know the feeling you set out to capture loads of footage then get back and have hardly any due to weather etc. Can I ask what camera you use? The audio is crisp and the autofocus works pretty well. Looking forward to part 2.
Andrew great vid mate were walking the great glen in September hope its as good then as seen well done
hay bro good luck i am just in the very early stages of planing my though hike of Europe. this video was grate for planing what im doing as i did not know about the E trails and it just opened my eyes as to whats posable with the knowledge iv gained though watching this video i now thinking of taking the e3 from cadiz up to the Belgium border them jump onto th e11 to rotterdam then the e9 to outside hamburg then the e6 up to lapland. one question i would like to ask is how you are getting around the laws regarding wild camping in Europe as in some countrys they can be a little harsh i.e Germany
The narrator doesn’t sound like a fun person to walk across Africa and Asia with.
It’s dangerous, it’s hot, waaaah!
Only just found your channel but happy to be a new subscriber. Your content is great and I’m super impressed by your editing.
So soggy! Looks like such a lovely route might try it when it’s sunnier! Lovely video as always Hannah.
And it is better to be over prepared physically and camping wise and maps and stuff there is alot to it
I tried this and i want it to be a 1 year timelapse….day 2: i miss a picture
Another wonderful video sweetheart that will be of great help too
You can walk again if you reached Magadan. Ola in the East are more 7 Hours to walk. And in the North to Seimtschan in 103 Hours. Why finished in Magadan?
Looking forward to day 2 looks like you picked a wet week for it:o
The right back pack is the key and you should take a few short trips first to get a idea about camping
There’s actually a guy who walked most of this road: Levison Wood. You should watch his documentaries
Great video. I think you only forgot to cut some part in the beginning as you are telling the same twice (about training in advance or not)
They are boats not ships, hopefully follow your route this year sometime thanks
Top notch video Mary. All excellent advice. I have passed your pre-bedtime stretching routine on to hikers on trail now. Thanks Tink’
Eh…. you mean nobody in RECORDED history has ever walked that walk. I’m sure someone has at some point in time, it’s just wasn’t recorded.
Excellent advice and info. High school and college stadiums are great venues for elevation training if you live in flat, no elevation hiking locations. Every town has a school stadium.
If a bridge were to be build between Russia and Alaska like you were hypothesizing in another video, this hike doubles.
Mary your detailed information is so important and so right on.
You’re the best.
47 degrees C, thats the temperature i get when going from school to my house in a bus with no air conditioner. the beauty of Sonora, México
It’s very true what you say, I did my first wild camp hiking three peaks and I had such Ideas about the videos but it did not happen, its hard going solo, but so worth it…
YouTube thanks for this recommendation this was fun to watch
Cool. This is useful for us right now because we are planning a 50 mile hike for one of our birthdays in late September in North Carolina. We are a little worried about stress injuries that will keep us from finishing. But we will document the whole experience on our channel.
Markus
Sweet vid, you have a real good style with um! Can’t beat a bit of liquid sunshine, lookforward to seeing the following days! You mentioned a few times about struggling to film because your camera was in ya pack, have you thought about getting a chest pack?
Strap some floatation booties and walk across the Bering Strait. Then continue through the Americas.
Why I have to stop into magadan? Technically I can track to end of Bering peninsula through mountains road, and it would be even bigger journey
Plot twist: Background is of Zoom and he is in Lockdown.
Congratulations! This is going to be amazing. I’m planning on a week or two in jotunheimen in summer 19, and I look forward to watching your own travels and picking up a bunch! Good luck, it’ll be amazing.
Wonderful advice, Mary. . Thank you. . Yes, strengthening those ankles is a super idea. (Also, excellent sound even with the wind there. Well done. )
Hi Alex, the proto-type rain pants from GramXpert that you own are they seam sealed and fully waterproof or are they just water resistant? They are very lightweight at 69g. I own a pair of wind pants (Millaris Pants) from AS Tucas that are 67g. They are not waterproof but are water resistant.
I have just received my GramXpert eLite quilt in Apex 200. Can’t wait to try it out. I’m quite impressed with the brothers’ handy-work. It’s exciting to follow these guys. I try to support the small cottage companies as much as I can.
Hope your injury is better and that you will be on the trail again soon.
Gooood Morning! Excellent information Mary! I love that you respected this endeavor enough to train and practice with all the gear and food. Great points about training in all weather. I don’t through hike but have run marathons and everything you said also applies to any endurance event. All that training and practice and tweaking what works or doesn’t gives confidence. I’m so glad you found Nuun!! I drink it everyday and more when sweating a lot. The electrolytes help replenish fluid in the cells. Inserts like Superfeet in shoes, make a world of difference for support as they cup the bottom of the heel area which in turn gives ankle support too. Thank you for this great video!
I’m assuming this is the journey my dad took when I was a baby and he told my mom he was going for a “walk” im guessing he’ll be back by 2024
Hey, I just noticed the domain is gramxpert.eu and not.com Thanks for the link, I just noticed I drive by this company every day
I walked from San Francisco to Standing Rock, any advice on walking for #climatechange?
This should be required viewing for through hikers. Well thought out. Wonderful. No wonder you finished the trial.
During the early part of the virus shut-down, when most parks and the nearby Appalachian Trail were shut down, I did a couple of full-pack hikes just on the roads in my area. I found these hikes curiously rewarding. I literally walked out my front door, hiked country roads for a few hours and came back after 12 or so miles. I gained a new appreciation for the area I live in, and it was a good way to get used to some new gear.
So nice to catch your positive, upbeat vibe no matter what the subject! Such great advice though. I was so impressed by your trail grit while watching you traverse the PCT, and your beautiful spirit shining through every mile of the way.
Why youtube whyy I am watching it like after 11 Years!, Now he would have Grand sons and daughters
Great advice on walking and hiking for training. Time on your feet is really important. Most people aren’t used to being on their feet for so many miles/hours every day.
You are always so eloquent and cheerful in sharing your thoughts and tips. I thoroughly enjoyed this video (as usual) and all the great advise because you really have done your research AND done the walk so everyone thinking of doing any kind long distance (or even short distance) hiking, trail running etc. should take note!! I have not done a thru hike, only very long day hikes and a couple of overnight backpacks but still, the advise is so valuable. One thing I need to get back to is my yoga and you have inspired me to really get to it again to help with my recovery. Thank you so much for another great video:)
Yeah, I don’t think anyone will do this… looool! But love the idea of it!
How to you deal with hornets or flying insects attacking or chasing you on the trail? Insect sprays on the body do not deter wasps or hornets, so not sure what to do? Also, what do you do for ticks?
5:18
“That’s pretty dangerous and you would probably die, but I mean you probably have died a dozen times before this anyway”.
What is the point of sticking to the route when you cannot make it to the end?
You are quite the spoke person for the PCT…. Hi Mary still enjoy your videos… How are you dealing with the virus.. its really awful here in the states. I think its still safe to hike the PCT
RealLifeLore: No one……
Homo Sapiens Sapiens: I did walk that route 100,000 years ago and even made a u-turn to Australia….and please let me note one thing…There was No F.. ROAD!

Hi Mary, do you how much your pack weighed without food and water? I realize weight may change depending on the section of the PCT (bear canister & ice axe for example).
To be honest this is insane quality considering it was made over a decade ago
Great Glen Way not a walk I have done. But have driven along the way?Stoped at. some of the key places.Rain was not a factor on trips in 1976
I can’t help but smile at all those people you’ve met thought out you journey. I hope their having a wonderful life right now! And I hope you have a wonderful life too!
You crazy…!:) What an epic journey your getting on, good luck! It´s a shame you have to miss the higher Pyrenees, but plenty elevation in Norway! Will you be Vlogging along the way?
I’ve had malaria so many times it’s ridiculous. Literally all the dangers in Africa aren’t that bad because I’m from there. I know how to survive lol

wow those little friends are all grown up now
and this is one of the most HD stuff I seen on videos before 2012
Made in 2009…
Can we all appreciate that for the first couple of walking shots he had to put his cam there walk far then walk back to pick it back up
