Cheers this was really useful,( thats some walk to see a West Ham team struggling to stay in the Prem!! Id suggest getting the 25 bus! ) Your section on embedding it on a Web site was a bit fast. But many thanks. R (I used to live on the Romford Road. )
can we import a known gps survey track data as a walking route
Thanks for the great series of tutorials, made me realize that I had been grossly underutilizing the capabilities of Gaia. Ended up springing for a premium membership using your discount code appreciate it!
Hi. On 5:20 the line for the route is automtically jumping to another street. I also have this problem if I draw a route for driving with my car. Is there a solution for this problem that the drivingline is not automatically jumps to another street. I still not have find a solution for this problem and it’s verry irritating. Thanks!
Thanks for the video, what do the views in your legend mean?
The crappy thing about Google Maps is that Your Maps can’t be used for step-by-step directions and you can’t share a custom route you create in Maps. The option to share is there but the link it shares uses the starting and ending locations and will default to the most efficient route. Google needs to combine the 2 options.
Good vid, but doesn’t show how to edit or adjust a route. How do you custom in between points A to B? Have to look elsewhere for that one.
They have removed the maps option after pressing on your places do you have a work around?
I noticed that everything works on Android, but with iOS the walk is broken or the blue lines aren’t showing. Does anyone has experience with this?
Great tutorial. If only there was a way to get the route from a computer to my iPhone I tried emailing the link to myself and then opening it on my phone but when google maps opens up it doesn’t recognise the route.
What happens if I want to measure distance walked? Cuz it only measures the distance as the crow flies
Do you wake up every day, and update the views in the thumbnail? *DEDICATION*!
Thanks! Do you know how to make it so It gives me the directions out loud, so that I don’t have to look at my phone every couple of minutes?
Edit: what I meant is do you know how to make it tell me the directions instead of me having to look at it?
Ok, so I made my route for cycling but can’t seem to find a way to open it on my phone in the Google Maps App. Any suggestions?
Great tutorial!
You don’t need to draw the route.
Just select the start and finish locations and that’s it.
This is great, it helped me create the bike route I wanted, but how do I follow the directions of the route? When I click on the starting point of the route there’s no option for me to engage directions to follow. I have to continuously look at my map and try to follow the route. Please help!
Hi. Is it possible to get the route on smart phone and follow using google maps offline?
Great thanks, but… can you convert that to a turn by turn google driving route.
Great video, thanks a million. Does anyone know if you can see your actual location on the map itself though?
i have some question how to draw marker circle on google map
I needed to create a parade route around to elementary students’ houses and I had no clue where to start. Thank you for posting this video it was soooo helpful!
What is a ‘pof’? Near the beginning you say “I’m going to create a POF” I presume you mean a closer up area, perhaps limiting the area.
Doesn’t work. When i click create map it says We are sorry, but you do not have access to Google My Maps. Please contact your organisation administrator for access.
Don’t know what this is about. Why is it so difficult to plan a route and find out what distance it is before you go for a walk.
Once you open it on your phone after drawing the map, it seems to only display the map but it doesn’t have an option for opening the map itself in navigate mode where G Map will direct your along the route as you go, which is an essential function unless you want to either memorize the route or keep analyzing the phone. Seems like a huge error in the design…
Hello, is it possible to change the images “A” “B” when making path?
I see your making your why through Perry, FL. {Taylor County}. There is a free camp site called Cabbage Grove. Its off hwy 98. Sense your are or was in Panama City. I am sure your not going to be stopping there. I just wanted to give you the heads up for maybe another time.
This is a great video and it is worth watching multiple times for proper knowledge. I made a map for my wedding events.
Do you have a video explaining how to do this on Google Maps app for mobile devices?
Thanks a lot….this is what i was looking for….can you help me, how i can insert Flight or Car images on travel route?
Thanks from California for the excellent vid. Just one thing, though. I’ve created a walking map, but would love to know how many miles we will be walking. How do I get it to show me the mileage?
Really off track from your subject but is there a way to tell Google Map they are putting my house at the wrong place on the planet? For ex., my address is (not) 87 Mills but Google Map says the house is really at 87 Mitch. Now all the couriers and taxis that use GM end up at the wrong place and it’s really messed up especially when I need to go to the airport or someone else gets my order (again).
Thank you.Great and simplified tutorial for me as a beginner. Could you tell me how to add a flight.ie we flew from nz to uk,heathrow.kind regards tony
Great tutorial.Perfect for a beginner, like me. Thanks for keeping it simple and doable.
Just starting to learn about this feature, found your video, an excellent beginners tutorial cheers James from Vancouver Island
WOWWWW! I am a Tour leader…. This video just changed my life… Thanks
Thank you very much for making this video! It was super helpful!
So you share the link but then your friends need direction for the car GPS or SatNav to get to the start of the walking path. Of course they will all be starting from different locations. So is there a way to create a real time directions that person could interact with to get there.
Tracks are great but static.
Thank you for the excellent tutorial. No fluff. Easy to understand directions that cover the important points of creating a route path on Google My Maps. Well Done! Where’s the button where I can give this 5 stars?
hello sir, i want to ask, can we make a database for the mark and the route we already create?
thanks for ur tutorial haahahaha
Funny. I saw someone design a map and rename a WHOLE AREA. LMAO. I called bullshit… Niceness doesn’t mean ignorance…
Nice video. But how can you see how many Kilometres this route is?For instance,i want to draw my night-walking route and i want to see how many kilometres it is.Thank you! Also if you put one route from point A to point B,and then from the point B draw another route to point C,will it count it to the overall distance of kilometres or not?
I would like to use a route created in my maps, into my phone with app google maps… but i can only see it, without manage to get driving directions as usual on main app… isnt possible?
Great video! How do you see the total journey length and distance?
Hi: I need to create a route for specific latitudes longitudes that I have already plotted in the map. Need to generate a map that opens on a phone and shows the directions based on the specific latitudes/longitudes. Would be great if you can provide any suggestions!
Ok so thanks for showing how to create a route but I came to this video hoping to find a way to use the route. I cant find a way to start route. It only shows it embeded on the map with no prompt to direction.
yea east coast SUCKS!!!!!!!!!
out west is way better people are nicer too……….
you’re walking from ilford to stratford! dude, get on the tube!
Hi mate this video is great but i’m just looking how useful for delivery jobs, i have one doubt if we have 10 delivery’s in a 10 different places, how can we know to do a particular delivery first after location marking and does google maps shows next delivery to do, which is near to us? ( like so and so address is near to you, so you need to go there first and it i’ll consume the time and go for next delivery).
hey thanks for the video…i use this method for multiple stops but all the time i get to one of the destinations then google gives the option to continue to the next destination and then i have to click it. Is there a way you can automatically continue to next destination without having to click on the continue? cause its so annoying
Lol who else thought he sounds like he was using a typewriter
The only thing I notice is when you draw your route google maps redraws it and has you go the way they want you to go???
Can I use google my maps and get directions, as I do in regular google maps
This was a really insightful video and helped a lot with creating a map, thanks so much
How can I edit the color of the location on iPhone. I can edit the name, but I can’t edit the color.
ok, i done this exacly like you said, but how can i open this on my celphone and use this as one route to follow?
How to change the color of the route from blue to other colors?
omg thanks so much now i can follow my route for halloween:D
How can you see tur by turn navigate directions? when I click link on my phone it opens the map and I see it, but I dont understand how to navigate it
This will still NOT give you turn by turn directions (according to your route) on Android Car.
Excellent Video, This makes backpacking in South America so much more efficient. Cheers Man!!!
Hey am working with one of the UN agencies and we are working on road projects, I want to create a map that may have for each sector around 100 route which contains 3 points (start, mid, end). can we make the routes grouped by layer? I want to know how to group multiple car routes in one group or layer please help me
I do a lot of hiking and while conceptually it would be good to share routes this way, it doesn’t seem to like off road walks. I can use the measuring tool to measure a visible trail, but when I try to walk it, the default jumps from my starting point to the nearest road. Maybe I need to fiddle with it more. Your video has given me something to think about. Cheers.
The map is wonderful.
Where can I find a maps like this done by Google user for another city’s attractions
Thanks
but how do you view it in google maps (like gps directions) while you are driving
Excellent explanation about route map. I saw many other videos but this is the best. Thank you
Great tutorial! You briefly mentioned questions about legal campsites, legal roads, and disconnected MVUM roads by private land etc. I would love to learn how you actually determine or plan around those things.
Top video mate, Can you please tell me if I wanna share a route with other work colleagues do they need to have a Google account? And does the stops go in the set order please
Thanks
Good tutorial! Is there any way to measure the total length of the route, after its created?
Great information as an overview of a route but virtually useless as a route planner. It will not give turn by turn directions for a route you create.
Very informative. Thank you. But when I open Google maps on the phone. It is there but won’t guide me on the route I created. It just shows the routes as a map. Any suggestions?
Having trouble getting these directions to show on mobile app. It tends to defer back to the fastest directions instead of a custom route.
a bit chatty but generally good tutorial how to create saved map. How to share etc. However I tried to use this to make route for driving directions and use it in mobile device. It’s probably impossible, or the way how to tell mobile app to use this directions layer and navigate along prefabricated route is way toooooo unintuitive for me. Maybe I’m asking for too much from map app.
Excellent, this video saved me so much time and frustration. Very clear instructions.
Great tutorial thanks. Can you share a google map like this and get other people to ‘use’ it (like in Strava) as guide? Like when you ask google to give you direction to reach a location it tells you to ‘turn right’ etc. It keeps you on the chosen route.
If in the same road to going back home for example, can we use different colour to differentiate same road but 2 time we use that road
Sorry, this did not help at all! How do you change or alter a saved route by adding waypoints. I just keep getting a line from my end or start point!!!! I find this route mapper very frustrating and clunky. It just doesn’t respond.
With the maps downloaded onto a mobile device, can ‘pins’ be added to maps to mark places I may wish to visit? I can add pins to Google Earth and they remain there for future reference. Thanks.
At last i’ve worked out how to plot and print out a route on OS website…. thanks OS.. saves me having to fold my maps up and ruin them..
Nice when working ok. However like many online apps, this crashes or just does not save any routes which is very disappointing after spending half an hour routing a map. Today I cannot save a route and cannot even bring up already saved routes…I pay £20 a year for this. It is a bank holiday Monday & it was the same yesterday for most of the day. Servers not powerful enough.?? I do not know
This is excellent thank you OS for these great video guides you make it look all quite straight forward. I will be signing up right away I just love looking at maps and route planing anything to get out of the madness that is London.
Have you tried using KOMOOT? As you can tell I think its quite useful for route planning and especially useful for planning on the fly. You could even use it to find your way home if you are lost??
Great video Tim & a local boy too, love riding the trails up & around Calne
Thanks, Tim! I don’t know if I missed it but do you know if once you’ve saved a route off-line you can make adjustments to that route, or, only when you are connected to your data? Also, do you know if routing offline essentially means that you can turn off your data?
So far I don’t see any advantages of any apps versus Trailforks, it has more activities like, ATV,MX,Nordic Ski,hiking SnowShoe and more.
the list of features goes on and on, I won’t bother you with silly long comment, so you might want to look it up, there is plenty of info and guides how to use it.
but I guess the main selling point of Komoot is the suggested route thing.
I haven’t looked into Komoot much.
I bought myself a new Wahoo Elemnt for xmas in the hope of getting to grips with Komoot. Your planned rides upload automatically to the gps which I like. The lock down means I’m having to wait to use it properly. Hopefully not much longer Nice vid thanks
Excellent and informative vlog Tim, I’ve been using komoot for a while now and find it easy to use, watching your vlog has helped me understand it a lot better so I will now experiment a bit more with the app, stay safe
Hi tim nice introduction to the app. Most videos concentrate on planning routes on pc. I found your video as I am planning on making a series of videos on using the komoot app. Do you know there is a way to unlock a full region of maps for free. When you first set up your app/account you only get a local area map for me this was around the Sunderland area. Once up and running on the mobile phone web page or desktop site there is an option to give a friend a full region. So simply send yourself an invite to a second email address that’s not already linked to komoot and create a new account using this invite you will now be able to unlock an entire region if maps.
Subbed your channel.
Atb Steve
I use os map app, the only problem i find is, you need to buy the paper map first, get the code off it download it in to the app, then use plot a route, out on your ride open app select follow route.
I’ve always wondered but never asked-how do folks like you out there bankroll this life style? I can see doing content and putting it online, maybe testing out different things for companies. But this has been around longer than the web got this interactive. There’s always the bread and butter. Is it getting a lump sum of money and just rollin with it? Honest question. My mom and her husband used to RV with a their 24′ maybe♂️ Aspen 5th wheel and like a 95 Ford dually, but they gave up eventually only getting to go out maybe once a year for a week or 2 and that being all they could afford. And he’s a mechanic, maybe the best one on Earth lol, so he can manage maintenance and breakdowns very cheap.. it’s just interesting to me too. You’d prob look at me and rving would be the last thing you’d expect from me. But I want to see as much of the world I can. I have since I can remember remembering. I highly doubt I’ll ever be doing that via my private jet .
I love to drive too. There’s not a drive I won’t make. It could possibly be a means to accomplish that goal some years down the road once my kids are grown and I gotta get the hell aways from them so I can have some life, and I don’t drive them nuts either! Haha. Thanks for the video.
Speaking as an over the road truck driver for 35+ years, I would suggest going to just about any truck stop and purchase a GPS for a truck. The only difference between these and those RV systems is the campsite info. All you have to do one time only is to enter the height, the length, and the weight of your system. Once that is done, set your route to where you want tog, simply put in an address, and your good to go. One more fact, you can pay $500 or more for an RV GPS, or, simply pay around $300 to $400 for a good truck GPS. I wish all RVer’s would do this. It would be just as good if not better than any RV GPS.Garmin Nuvi without the logging option.

I love when people live simple, you don’t feel the need to have everything…..latest whatever. In the long run it doesn’t really matter……as long as you have what you need, have family, pets. It makes me nuts when I see others who waste $$$$ on lets say a purse that cost thousands…..I could have donated an saved soooo many animals with that $$$ or gave to someone who truly has nothing. Anyways, peace to you an yours!!
Freecampsites.net at least 20 campsites that are free in Florida as well as some that are $5.00 a night. Also, has a trip planner!
lydia dont you like those widebody extended hi-top rv vans also?
simplify.
Do you belong to BOondockers welcome..I have people stay with me and me with them free..look into it linda
Lots of good advice. I,just bought a small class c but would have been happier in a class b or a van for all the reasons you mention. And.. The northeast is tough for free campsites as well!
Thanks for covering this topic. I’ve been wondering what to do instead of just GPS.
I take that back its called Goose Pasture. Off 98 in Perry Florida. Here I a video another couple took. https://youtu.be/H6UZ6SgXCT8
2:50 How many people moved their mouse to move the cursor out of the way?..
Thanks for the info I’ll have to check that app out . I normally use Google Maps and there’s another one that Google just bought called Waze it’ll give you live updates if there’s accidents and a bunch of different routes plus she can add stops along the way
Being old and retired and (long) weekend warriors we plan on spending most nights at a park we pay for. The main reason, is my wife wants her air conditioner. And I need shore power for that. I am looking into one of the 12 volt mini air conditioner. We have a small popup so it should be enough to keep it cold enough for her. Has anyone ever owned one of the 12 volt camping air conditioners?
You can also import a spreadsheet. You can make a column in the spreadsheet titled “Addresses” and then type the addresses below. All your stops will be automatically pinned unless there was a problem with the address (doesn’t exist or typo) but it will show you a data table listing the bad addresses in question. This could be useful for delivery drivers adding stops to their route.
going from california to maine and back. thanks for the info. peace
Do you also own real property or do you live permanently in your camper? How much is your average monthly gas expense?
i feel sooooo march 1960… but i never use a app or a routeplanner. i have something called maps. they are made from paper. and really big. and it shows the complete area.
I travel up and down the east coast for years and it’s getting harder and harder to find good camping.
Well my friend you and your son be safe as you travel. It is sad we all have to think about the TROLLS on our channels….I really think you had the best idea about getting a pickup truck with a slide-camper. Please remember when you both are traveling up in the northern part of Georgia, we would like to have dinner with you and say a couple of interesting places around here….GOD’S JOY.
Luv your channel! Appreciate the info and all the cool places you take us to. Cheers!
When you have a big rig you find a place close to some places you want to visit.Unhook your camper and use it just like a house until your ready to move on.Wal-Mart boon-docking while traveling isn’t a big deal with a big camper. But i understand how nerve racking it could be for a single woman to deal with all the things that comes along with having a big camper.
i am in south Fla..leaving in a few weeks. thanks for the app and advise.
Hi friend. a question. How can I optimize my stops? How did I pass the parameter optimize = true? by url.
That’s one way to map your way to CV delivering here in Norway.
Google are clever you can only save where you want to go as your destination but you can’t save multi stops before your destination basically you can’t save round trips only point A to point B not Point A to point A with stops inbetween I guess
I did 9 stops for a bike ride route I want to do but I could not see no save option can you help me
Thank you for the really great tutorial! Death Valley, California!
If I don’ t know by adding multiple destinations where I am supposed to reach first. does the google map rearrange the destination according to distance?
More precise and easier to plan a route on a computer and it’s possible to send the route to the smartphone!
Do u have to go in the settings to change it to that because it’s not showing
hey thanks for the video…i use this method for multiple stops but all the time i get to one of the destinations then google gives the option to continue to the next destination and then i have to click it. Is there a way you can automatically continue to next destination without having to click on the continue? cause its so annoying
Why would someone use a Garmin device as opposed to just navigating with RWGSP on a cell phone? There must be some advantage that I don’t know about.
Akward to the point of being absolutely unusable. Will stubbornly try and take me through parking lots, people’s back gardens etc… I need to add control point every 20 yards… hardly ideal for 50 miles+ rides. Would need at the very least an option to completely disable the inept algorhythms that think they know better than you. Truly awful. The guy blabbers on and struggles for 5 min to plot a 1 mile section. What if you need to plan an 80 mile ride? How many weeks is that gonna take?
My Wahoo Element Bolt. Using the Wahoo Element app on my iPhone. I can create routes and it is giving turn by turn directions on the bolt. Seems like this is new feature? Why do I need to use ridewithgps?
Very good video. I’m wondering whether routes can be planned via iOS tablet and then accessible via the iOS app, as I’ve not turned my laptop on in quite some time. I’ll give it a try like
Route planning and navigation are my favorite features in RWGPS:-) Easy and efficient.
Oh so goodYou & Chris enjoying Nature together…love it. You give me ‘animo’encouragement that it’s doable…Stay strong and happy in living your dream. God bless & protect always ((love hugs)) Ana y Andy
Thanks this was really useful for some hidden walks I am organising in London for a group
How do you lnow what the dotted lines mean as far as trails dirt roads not maintained road and ehat have you?
I just purchased the premium membership. I can’t find the Mapbox Outdoors HD map. Can you tell us where to find it? Thanks
This looks great for plotting your route but what do you use to find the best, most scenic, most ideal routes in an area you’ve never been? Just lots of googling and reading?
Hey thanks for the vid! Used your link to purchase! Do you only use an Android device? Ive had some diffuculty with downloads on my phone and better luck with my iPad, any advice for this?
I’d really like to see a video on how to add in a google streets layer or google terrain. I’ve tried looking it up but haven’t had much luck!
You know how Google has a map layout that follows you when going to be destination? Does Gaia have it? If so, where do I tap to access that view?
I can’t find the MapBox Streets HD map when I try to add maps. Where do I find this?
no solution i was looking for.. good that google gave as a tool to plan the rout, but sadly you can’t use it for navigation..
Thanks so much for taking the time to do these vids! Gaia rocks and every time I learn more it becomes that much better!
Thanks for the video… but when I try to download my maps for offline use, it doesn’t include the waypoints or routes that I have included on the map! What am I doing wrong?
Confused. Everyone loves this video but I get lost at six minutes and 40 seconds. Jumps from setting up map layers to immediately drawing a route. Trying to follow what you are doing on iPad. Can you let me know what layer you are using as vase layers and what overlays you have active? I can’t get a map to look anything like what you have. Are you doing your demo on an iIs device or computer. Thanks.
Is there a key to show what are roads, trails, hiking trails, etc?
Thanks Kevin for info, i use your discount, I’m in canada, less trail and public trail but its a new useful tool.
Very Helpful! Did you go on this trip? Would love to see the video, did not find it in the list. I have lived in Northern NM before, Dad worked for the USFS. Some beautiful spots I could suggest if you haven’t done this trip yet:)
Which device do you use Gaia with, ios or android? I noticed you are using android device for torque pro but there are some problems in Gaia with the android version
Good morning. Question for everyone: when I am trying to change the routing mode the window pops up behind the black screen not in front. Anyone know how I can fix that? Thanks!
You gotta get up into the upper peninsula of Michigan. Beautiful land up there!
Thanks Kevin. Just used GAIA maps for a 5 day trip on the Pacific Crest Overland Route. It was easy to use and I couldn’t have done the trip without it.
Hey Kevin! Thanks for this video. I’m a premium Gaia member but I don’t see many of the layers that you have. In particular, MVUM….do you have any idea why I’m not seeing that one? Do we have add layers or are they just there under “layers” in the app? Thanks a lot. -Mike
Kevin, what GPS do you use to track your location? Can Gaia track your location while you are traveling or do you need a separate GPS?
Great info! I geek out on mapping. The one thing that I wish Gaia would add is mileage info as you go and can see it like mapmyride. It may be my bad but when I start on a route, I tend not to bust it up into sections, I just run with it. I map both for the 4runner and the GS and sometimes the mileage gets pretty close for the GS gas range. I have a route mapped across NM to just south of Libby Montana and I am currently trying to figure out one of the longer sections.
Where you are mapping is some of my favorite parts of NM. Hope you see a huge herd of elk!
Thanks for this video. But one question, how do you know if the trail you’re mapping out on the MVUM is passable with your 4Runner and not some extreme trail where you need a rock crawler?
I have Premium and cannot find the Public Land (US) overlay anywhere? What category is it in in case I have overlooked?
FYI You can also download maps for track. Select the track in your app. In iOS tap the… 3 dots on the top right. Then select Download Maps for Track. You can pick the layers you want and zoom level here. I believe it downloads the maps 4 miles either side of your track. For many that will be enough map data. It saves on your download size since you are not downloading portions of an area you do not need. https://help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003524827-Download-Maps-Along-a-Track-or-Route Android https://help.gaiagps.com/hc/en-us/articles/115003524987-Download-Maps-Along-A-Track-or-Route
Great job Kevin. @gaiagps should share your video. Gaia is extremely powerful software. It does have a learning curve depending on your tech skill level. I have been using Gaia for over 5 years and it has come a long way from “a hiking app” to a robust platform for overlanders. Just take the time to learn how to use it! I prefer to use it on iOS devices but that’s just me. It just has a cleaner look as compared to Android.
Gaia MVUM are hopelessly out of date. I’d suggest heading to http://open-mvum.com/ and grabbing the free and current.gpx’s which you can import into Gaia
A good tutorial. Was glad to meet all of you at OEW. Happy travels.
Take that alternate route thru valle Vidal @Lifestyle Overland
Do you need to install an external GPS antenna, or is the internal Tablet or Phone GPS good enough?
wow how cool…. that is a powerful tool…. I would like to watch more of these if you make them
I have Gaia on my tablet, and I slave the tablet to a Garmin glo2 stand-alone GPS receiver. If I am off grid, away from cellular reception (but with a good GPS signal), without downloaded maps of an area, will this combo still enable me to use Gaia for navigation? I haven’t had a chance to test my system under these conditions yet. Any advice would be appreciated.
Great vid as always Kevin. Gaia was amazing and gave a bunch of us memberships for our Tundras to Sedona event this year to help with trail leading. Still a rookie at it but vids like yours help a lot!
Yes, please head into Valle Caldera; also, venture to Valle Vidal, Fr 1950. Two pristine areas worth exploring. My husband and I totally enjoyed your Alaskan travels. Now looking forward to seeing New Mexico. Safe travels!
Great instructional Kevin, you just expanded my mind my horizons, quite literally lol. Amazing app. Helps to see it in action from soup to nuts.
I definitely want to know how you did your Google map layer! Great video!
Just a suggestion; if you’ve not already been there, and checked it out, the village of Las Trampas, not far from where you’re going, has one of the oldest Spanish missions in North America.
The people there are very proud of it, each family holds the key for a month, and is responsible for cleaning and maintaining it.
You can usually ask at the llaza, and someone will find the keepers oc the key, and they will proudly give you a tour.
The “village”, and mission are on an old land grant, and the mission was built to protect the mountain pass from indian attack, and bandits.
Neat and interesting reading.
Great video. One thing to check out the new NeoTreks layer is super nice blends the best of all the various layers and has a lot more information (e.g., MVUM, all hiking trails, public lands, etc.) than e.g., USFS, Gaia Topo, MapBox and Landscape (my previous favorite). It’s now my default base map.
(Now, if only I could figure out how to delete the MapQuest Satellite, I’d be a happy camper (it’s been a very long-standing bug that it can’t be deleted from the default layers…))
This is awesome! I will definitely be downloading the Premium GAIA GPS for my adventures. Thank you…
Very good tutorial it looks a great mapping system I’m in England so can ordnances survey maps be down loaded on to the system do you know?
And is there an option for pin colours or icons for different ihings at locations/ camp sites /garages /etc?
I was using an app called Global scout which was excellent and had options to navigate straight from the app in Apple maps /google/TomTom but sadly doesn’t appear to be sponsored anymore so this just might be a great option
This was extremely helpful. Thank you so much for sharing! I actually have a few questions in regards to your planning process. Where do you make stops? I see that it is almost a 400 miles trip, so I am wondering how many miles do you normally drive per day. Gas stops? Campsites? Do you find those as you drive? Or you have a plan by the time you get started? How many days should this trip take you to complete? Thanks in advance!
Really useful. The wife and I have ridden our ATV’s to Greenie Peak a few times and it is indeed beautiful. We’ll be visiting there again in late August (staying with friends at their cabin in Valle Escondido). We’ll be taking our new Honda Talon SxS this time, rather than the ATV’s. Hope to hit Goose Lake too while we’re there.
I’m using a Galaxy S10 for my onboard map and it’s not the best hardware solution for sure. Thinking about purchasing a Samsung tablet (8″ probably) for my permanent onboard GPS requirements in the Talon, but don’t know whether I’ll have it before we head that way.
As always, thanks much for sharing.
Steve
The reason you were having issues sometimes snapping the route, is because GAIA uses the GAIA Roadmap layer to determine if it can snap to a road or not. It doesn’t matter what layer you are actually viewing. If you’re having issues snapping, its because the road doesn’t appear on the GAIA Roadmap Layer. Also, the second route you forgot to change from Hiking to Driving, so it was acting funny because it thought you could hike off the road.
Awesome content, very informative. I have two questions: Do you ever use your phone or tablet for trip planning or just the PC/web version of Gaia? And, do you delete the downloaded maps once the trip is completed? Thanks.
Good info for a beginner. Wish I had this video when I started using it, good stuff.
Shhhhhh…. Don’t be giving away those roads and places to the masses. Those areas are my secret getaways
The version that you demonstrated. Was it the the regular or the premium membership? Thanks
What do you recommend if you want a gps that doesn’t rely on online access let’s say you want the all of the maps to reside on a tablet or laptop? Because from what I’ve gathered you’re creating these routes while you’re online. Does the level of membership give you that capability an you go over the various subscriptions you recommend in you next video
Good afternoon I’ve followed your channel since it’s beginning and appreciate all the information and inspiration you’ve offered to all of us. I do have a quick question. Have you evaluated Garmin’s new ‘Overlander’ device, and how it stacks-up to Gaia?
How did you find using Gaia when in Canada? I.e. enough detailed layers to make it worth while?
