Higher VO2 max scores are associated with certain endurance sports, most specifically cycling, rowing, distance running, and cross-country skiing. Tour de France winner Miguel Indurain’s VO2 max was reported at 78 mL/kg/min during the peak of his conditioning, while cross-country skier Bjørn Dæhlie reportedly achieved a VO2 max of 96 mL/kg/min.VO2 max refers to the maximum amount of oxygen you can utilize during exercise.
It’s commonly used to test the aerobic endurance or cardiovascular fitness of athletes.Purpose: The novel self-paced maximal-oxygen-uptake (VO2max) test (SPV) may be a more suitable alternative to traditional maximal tests for elite athletes due to the ability to self-regulate pace. This study aimed to examine whether the SPV can be administered on a motorized treadmill. Methods: Fourteen highly trained male distance runners performed a standard graded exercise test (GXT), an.
One can think of VO2 max as an athlete’s aerobic potential and the lactate threshold as the marker for how much of that potential they are tapping into during an endurance event. This threshold can improve and increase numerically with appropriate training. In theory, an individual could exercise at any intensity up to their VO2maxindefinitely.
Most elite athletes undergo VO2max testing in order to monitor fitness levels and for determining VO2max training zones. This would normally be done using an incremental exercise test in which speed or power is increased in incremental stages until either oxygen consumption plateaus or the athlete fails to complete a work stage.VO2 max is also a predictor of performance, although its correlation to athletic success in endurance sports is only 30-40%, with other factors such as sustainable lactate threshold, motivation, training, etc also playing a role.
The best way to measure your VO2 max is performed in a human performance lab with a treadmill or cycle ergometer test, performed with an oxygen mask. During the test, the athlete breathes into an oxygen mask to measure the amount and gas concentrations of inspired and expired air, while performing all-out effort exercise.VO2 max is an important metric for endurance athletes because when energy is generated aerobically (in the presence of oxygen), the by-product of glycolysis (sugar burning) can actually be used to create even more energy (via the Krebs cycle) rather than “hanging around” in the muscle and contributing to acidosis and subsequent fatigue.VO2 Max Athletes’ fitness test and an important health measurement tool.
VO2 Max, a scientific measure of cardio fitness for athletes, has become a key health measurement for all people.VO 2max is a measure of a person’s aerobic fitness (see more on Measuring VO 2max). The table below categorizes VO 2max scores for adult men and women of various ages. These are relative VO 2max scores, in the units of mls of oxygen per kilogram of body weight per minute (ml.kg -1.min -1).
Maximal oxygen uptake norms for men (ml/kg/min).A VO2 Max test helps determine an individual’s cardiovascular capacity by assessing how efficiently oxygen is transported to working muscles during endurance exercise. This test can be used to monitor the effectiveness of an athlete’s training program, and assists in making recommendations that’ll help maximise the athlete’s performance.VO2 max is the maximum rate of oxygen consumption measured during incremental exercise; that is, exercise of increasing intensity.
The name is derived from three abbreviations: “V” for volume, “O2” for oxygen, and “max” for maximum. The measurement of VO2 max in the laboratory provides a quantitative value of endurance fitness for comparison of individual training effects and between people in.World-class athletes have been doing VO2 max testing in laboratories for years, and that’s still an option—it’s also the gold standard for accuracy. You can get a VO2 max test done at sports medicine facilities, or medical labs that also do stress tests to evaluate heart health.
Testing an athlete’s VO2 max isn’t hard—you just need to choose a stationary device such as a bike, treadmill, or even rower, and throttle up the speed to the maximal rate that can be sustained for a short time. Using gas exchange analyzers, a short test can identify the rate of.Tests that measure Vo2 max are considered the gold standard for measuring cardiovascular fitness.

How about an active cool down? Blood pooling in the lower extremities can lead to fainting, dizziness, nausea. You also want to have active cool-down to facilitate metabolic waste removal.Have the person straddle the treadmill while you lower the speed and then have the person do a cool down walk to gradually bring the heart rate back down to pre-exercise heart rate.
8:04 Fraser says that the VO2 Max feature of the watch is free once you pay for the watch. Hmm, so the feature disappears if the watch is stolen?
Oskar Svendsen junior cyclist has had a recorded VO²MAX test result of 97.5. 70 is good, but it’s no top elite.
http://www.topendsports.com/testing/records/vo2max.htm
the dude that paced the whole video made this look stupid. Thanks for my major change. The white dude and the one with the clip board made thus look legit though.
Did you know if you were a 5 foot 1 woman you may not be able to fucking run that fast. I hate these stupid tests. they are designed for fucking TALL ASS people like yourself.
LOL 99% of theese are Norwegians wtf is wrong with my nation?
My VO2 max is 59 which I assume is quite good. I did not expect my VO2 max to be that good
shouldnt there have been an incline increase at somepoint to decrease the duration of the test but still allowing the subject to reach their max vo2 and hr?
Would have been interesting to ask the lab guys what they think of the method used by the watch
In this example, the estimated VO2 Max is not too far off the measured one.
However, wouldn’t the accuracy of the estimate, based on resting heart rate and HRV be compromised by completing a max effort just earlier?
Or maybe the ramp test was short enough to not increase the subject’s fatigue/stress too much.
Cause all three wanted to be on camera… That’s why…. I’m not complaining though. Quite nice
Please also understand there is no such thing as a wrong or dumb question and that this video was made with the intent of educating people on the proper way to effectivily perform a VO2 Max test using gas exchange measurement and indirect calorimetry. With that said please be respectful to each other and debate with one another respectfully. Debating, questioning, and hypothosizing is all part of science and research. Thanks everyone!
If anyone tells me what their Vo2 is that hasn’t been measured in a lab I tune out
How do you translate that Vo2 Max figure into training zones?
The factor you have not mentioned in regard to VO2 max is age! I am 66 years old and when tested 18 months ago in a lab on a bike, I had a VO2 max of 50mL/kg/min. The average value mentioned in your video was for a much younger person. The average for my age would be somewhere around 27mL/kg/min. It also seems that VO2 max varies with sport. My cycling VO2 max is higher than my VO2 max when running!
im heavy set. will this help me run longer to lose weight faster naturally?
Also curious, have you ever done before and after on people planning to their level of fitness and if so, what’s the best improvement you’ve seen?
How many of them are doping? Guarantee most, if not all, are on EPO.
So I’m a runner, and had a VO2 max test done my freshman year of high school at a cross country camp at UW Whitewater Wisconsin, however they stopped the test after 26:20 of running, because they said my amount of CO2 stopped changing after 20 minutes even though they were increasing the speed of my running and the incline. Is this something normal to happen?? I first questioned whether the machine was broken so I took more at UW Oshkosh, but had the same results.
70.2 is the record. how many what kind of elite athletes have you guys been testing? I’m a 21 year old male and last year I got a 72.1 VO2 Max and I am no elite athlete
Mine is 61 from 49 I cycle 20 miles to work and back 4 times a week
Come on guys at least tell us the results, it seems like a wasted watch otherwise.
Should you have done the fitness test on the watch first? His HRV is likely effected by the earlier run.
I have 3 questions
1.how much would this cost?
2.Can anybody have it tested or do you have to be famous or good at ur sport
3. Who has had the best VO2 max ever tested? and what was it?
I remember doing this but for 12 minutes. Thought my heart was going to pop out of my chest
Not bad, but 71 is no record. I could do a 200km ride then do a 82 in the same day. Just a few days ago I did a 92 with proper rest the week before. I guess you are saying it’s your clinics record? I was using a cosmed machine though.
VO2 Max depends greatly on genetics and represents your innate ability to do constant exercise; some people really do just have good genes! But you can improve VO2max by simply losing weight.
Crazy that the test on the treadmill didn’t reach kipchoge marathon pace. 20.5kmh failure point
Surely doing the watch test an hour after a maximal test isn’t the right protocol..
The athlete was given an active recovery as soon as he jumped off the treadmill. We placed the athlete back on the treadmill at a walking speed to allow for the prevention of blood pooling in the lower extremities and also to gain recovery data. We had the video edited for commercial purposes and our editor cut that part out for time reasons.
That guy was amazing! His feet didn’t stagger at all. Great job!
You guys are going to give this guy a fucking heart attack. Fuck that shit. He was running fucking 9 mph. He is NOT A CAR, he is a HUMAN. Why’d you push him like that.?? How’d you like it if I pushed you like that?
With the proximity of that treadmill to the wall, if he’d stumbled he’d been absolutely wrecked.
I thought he will suffocate himself in that mask… Feel the pain
My VO2Max is 64 from a Polar Vantage V. Chuffed with that. Three years of ultra marathons.
69? That is impressive.
Garmin watches (same) are also capable to provide VO2 but not in static environment but you need to run of course
Seeing VO2 max is not to compare with others but to see your progress but of course you/we all know it 😉
Hi Guys, amazing video. This had the perfect information for my IB sport science students. Thanks you.
Per my Garmin, I increase my vo2max by taking a couple days off, and doing a tempo run in the cold…. then if I want it to go down… I just run slowly in the heat:o)
Yeah, my mom is 5 foot 5 and about 110 pounds. Oh wait…she’s not “fat” at all. She wears size 4 pants. But, wait. She can’t run like this video either. Well jeez. I guess my mom is just LAZY according to you, right? But what you didn’t know is my mom is 60. Welcome to life. You will age to. Not everyone is “fat” like you say.
Is it possible to have so little muscle mass that your muscles are the limiting factor to your vO2max? It’s not like it would affect training to any degree, i’m just curious. thanks
It is an expensive lab test for me but maybe for a few years I will have money that did VO2 Max test but now I will try to train a lot maybe when I do test I was very surprised result of my training
So why do you show Eluid Kipchoge on the heading if he’s not in the video?
Misrepresented
Im 44 and recently took up running. My garmins watch says my VO2 is 57. Did a half marathon in 1hr 44mins. Best distance Ive done is 36k in 3hrs 30mins in a marathon attempt-ish(had got to 33k in 2hrs 58). I had to give up at 36k due to an incredibly painful hip. Had been at me since 20k but it seized up around 33k and thats why I eventually had to stop. I was actually about to attempt a marathon distance again today but forgot to charge my watch and only found out just as I was about to start!!!! Damn….. Had to postpone it for a day or 2.
Great video! But 7mmol/l lactate is pretty low after a vo2max test?
Top 1% of what? The general population? If this is the case worldwide 1% of 7 billion is 70 million people who are as good as that or, more likely, better. That is nothing to brag about. But if he is an Elite Athlete he is more likely the top 1% of the top 1% of the top 1%.
This is what you said: “Some people like to be pushed” THEN YOU SAID “”IT is FAT AND LAZY people who don’t”. MY MOM does not like to be “pushed”. I don’t like to be pushed either. So to me or my mo don’t like to be pushed that must mean we are= fat and lazy. According to you ALL people that don’t like to be pushed are = fat and lazy. We are NEITHER fat/lazy. We do NOT like to be pushed. So your equation is false. Not all people that don’t like to be pushed are fat or lazy. Just your opinion
Miguel Indurain’s aerobic fitness was amazing. His resting heart rate was 28 BPM, and in recovery he went from 150 to 60 BPM in 30 seconds. And his VO2max was only in the 80s!
Excellent video, wondering why you didn’t whip off that mask as soon as your test was over. Did your HR need to return to baseline? Can you do more videos like this, some that are HR based, like time to drop by x BPM as an indicator of fitness. I ditching my Garmin for a Polar Vantage V
Just so prinecornerkick knows, I found this video by accident. I was looking up stress tests for women since woman have a different equation for the stress test. I didn’t come looking for this video and I didn’t say “Oh let me find a video I hate so I can troll on it”. That is stupid. Just don’t assume that all people that can’t run 8 miles an hour are fat or lazy. My mom can’t run 5 mph and she is neither lazy nor fat. You made a blanket statement which is a big over-generalization.
Can you increase VO2 max with age or does a slower max heart rate pose as a bit of an impediment?
curious how much max heart rates differ on a bike vs. running. i don’t recall doing a “ramp” test for a run or a Vo2 max, but have done many on the bike and my bike zones are pretty accurate, but i assume my running zones would be different?
What HR max did he hit during this? What’s his LT? Sorry if already in the comments
This is not a good test as you are able to press the recovery button and the speed and incline will go down in an instant. Stopping so suddenly risks injuring the athlete. The saliva collection tube was also not attached. True it does bring in more O2 but it also means that there is O2 escaping?
at 8.5M/hr pulse 189 you kidding? He is clearly not a runner or drank all night beforehand.
I mean this is an easy methodology.. finishing just at 9.5 with no incline…interesting to see what was the output
Can someone explain why the title is “Broke the record” if he did NOT brake the record?! That, to me, is the definition of absence of logic.
Liked it. maybe an example for the table at the end would be nice.
Some people do like being pushed, it’s fat lazy people who don’t! Calm down and grow up.
the test was too easy for ryan! He either wanted more speed or an incline.
Great result. May be record at your facility but nowhere close to all time record.
What are VO2max values (ml/kgBW/min) corresponding to (very) poor, fair, good and excellent aerobic fitness?
What’s the highest vo2max for an athlete in his 50s? (I’m hoping to beat it of course!)
Would you get different results if he was pushed to failure on a suspension treadmill?
My VO2 Max is 75.5. I do Soccer refereeing for college games and jog multiple days a week. Max Heart rate of 199 and 23 years old.
One question, Epoxy training (in swimming pool breath every 5 or 7 hands ) helps
rising v02max?
Two things.
One, a true VO2 max test should take no longer than 14-16 minutes. A 20 minute test may seem “more valid” but at a certain point the athlete is just utilizing anaerobic means to maintain his or her intensity.
Two, it’s nearly impossible to actually “max out” a fit person on a flat grade. Not enough muscle mass is recruited on a flat grade when you increase the grade, you activate more of the posterior chain (hamstrings and glutes).
His point was exactly the opposite, his point was that VO2 max is dependent on a number of variables including, but not limited to being massively obese. So, in the mean time, keep being massively obese. I’m sure that there is a promising boxing career in your future.
ACSM’s metabolic equation would suggest that he was near 56 ml.kg.min-1
That looks like a Parvo cart. I’ve never seen that kind mask. Can you tell me the name?
I have VO2-max of 57 and I can’t for the life of me run a marathon faster than 3:50 h. It is not possible for me to train much harder than I do. I should run it in 2:50 h instead. It sucks to suck!
this new to me.
ive done 10mph for 3mins flat to push myself.Since im all ways jogging my gold was to gon10mph for 10 20 mins straight.
My Garmin Said that my Vo2MAX was 71 and the actual Vo2MAX test Said 69.
There should be a study demonstrating what happens with your VO2max intake measure depending on having or not having at your side an annoing guy that tells you loudly what you already knew when you signed up for the test.
C’mooon Brian.
Keep going strong.
Let’s go.
C’mooon.
Stay up there.
SHUT THE FUCK UP
Before I was running garmin gave me a score of 37 which is poor. 2 years later with consistent Running now at 53 which us excellent
What’s the reason you have THREE exercise physiologists involved here?
I just did 83.5 vo2 max on my stress test at the hospital, my doctor said that he has never saw that numbers even with athlets. Im not consider myself elite runner, but my numbers are similar to Lance Armstrong! Im 46
How can we know that is not vo2 peak? It looks like vo2 peak, because curves in computer screen was still increasing before the end.
great test! i really would like to see my self testing.. Only problem is as i know he should not be stopped immedieatly.. He should walk or jog..
Looks exactly like a fucking CPAP mask on your face. I refuse to wear CPAP masks when I’m trying to sleep. Shit, you can RUN 7 mph? What are you, supernan?
Does VO2 max testing take into account a person’s height? I mean someone who is short will have a shorter stride then someone who is taller.
Finnaly sommeone does a lab test vs heart rate test, namaste very much!
Dang im 13 and i got a 193 just by sprinting back and fourth 20 meters a few times without warm up
Measured VO2 max on Garmin Vivoactive 3 and over the last four months it has decreased from 46 to 41 but with no let up in intensity of training. Any ideas why this might be?
lol according to my Garmin, my V02 manx has always being poor and has got worse despite running only 5k at a struggle 12 month ago and now being able to run 10k?
The graph listed the zones as both %Max (VO2max) and %Max (Heart Rates), So why do I need to know my VO2max since I can just use the %MHR zones?
Well, It’s too bad that there’s no mouthpiece and noseclips.
That guy is in fantastic shapeso what was his VO max #? I take the bruce protocol test every 2 years at the hospital due to open heart surgery in 2002, a 4 x bypass, I run some 5ks and cycle to my cardiologists office 30 miles each way my VO max is about 51 judging by the time on the treadmillI am 58 so not a young guy but my surgeon and cardiologist are very impressed
According to my Polar Vantage my vo2 max is higher than Fraser’s (70). Assuming that is accurate (and i realise that’s a big one) what else is it that makes me so much slower in a race?
what is the benefit of using such short protocol increasing speed evey 1min. I read somewhere that in order to stabilise lactate its better to stay on the speed at least for 3 min. Lactate is very individual but maximum 7.7 seems to be very very low. I not an expert but such short test seems to be not too accurate.
Four people in there monitoring this guy? Seems completely superfluous.
He needs a better treadmill (able to do 25 km\h), because vvo2max is a good biomarker of performance and determine your training program. An incline will change your biomechanics, your active muscle groups (and your gas parameters)
could you easily adapt this gear to test somebody on a rowing machine? or would you need entirely different equipment?
I still don’t know what “Clutching at straws” means. I’m just repeating what you said here: Some people do like being pushed, it’s fat lazy people who don’t! And YOU are the one that said that, NOT ME. You think the equation is true [Don’t like to be pushed = Fat and Lazy]. May be the equation is [Don’t like to be pushed = would rather walk than run], [don’t like to be pushed = can’t run] I was looking up female stress tests since females are NOT small men. Found this video by accident!
Would be nice if you take more time in how to use VO2max at the end…this Table was confusing and I dont get your Message here…%VO2max equals %HR-zones??? My garmin shows 51 btw
Read your original posts slagging off the VO2, and then read what you’re posting now. It’s utter crap and you know it. I don’t get why people search for things on YouTube they apparently ‘don’t like’, it’s pathetic. I never spoke of your mother and you know it, hence “clutching at straws” which rings true now more than ever. Bye.
You are the one that said that let me quote you “Fat lazy people who don’t like being pushed”. So according to you my 60 year old mom is FAT and Lazy! So I’m clutching at straws? Hmmm. Next time don’t make a generalized statement that ALL people that don’t like to be “pushed” are fat and lazy. Just wait. you will turn 60, 70 and 80 one day. give it time. It will happen to you too.
how can my new polar decide what my vo2 max is. It said it was 61 wich is very good. Is it so high and maybe inaccurate because it’s new and not used to me or because of my young age (16). I don’t understand how they can calculate it by just you HR
I will have Mark answer this question. He is getting back from Scotland.
mine VO2 is 43:P ( i have 39 few month ago if garmin watch is true)
15 more seconds. Come. On. What a loser. I could have done 15 more seconds. But he said that 15 times.
Your VO2 MAX is simply something to distract from the fact you don’t have good running genes because you’re white.
I believe the Olympians, Seb Coe and Steve Cram has VO2 Max values of 83 and 82.
I just started running and after my first benchmark run garmin gave me a vo2 max of 61
Has Frasier gone back and retested his watch base VO2 after returning to a resting state?
For a trained recreational runner 9.5 mph would be light work even on 1 2% incline. 200 bpm at 0 incline means he was blowing gaskets and would have certainly passed out if continued.
198 heart rate????? This guy looks about 25 years old which would put his maximum heart rate at about 195 so he would have to be running at over 100% his Max to hit almost 200 BPM.
The values are wrong on stage 6 the speed is 6.8mph not 9.5mph which is in the video… something is wrong
Edit: i mean in stage 6 it should be 6.8mph, that is the standard
i’m not sure what i loved more Fraser’s look during the coin toss, or the super synth soundtrack during the ramp test! also, **67.3!!** well done, Fraser!
hi everyone i am sorry i have not answered all your questions that have been posted on here. I have been extrememly busy the last several months running My Exercise Science facility. I recommend that everyone continue to leave comments and questions on the video or about exercise physiology, and i will answer them for you all very soon.
One exercise physiologist controls the cart, one is constantly recording heart rate, and one is there just in case he falls.
At least that’s what we were taught in our exercise physiology lab.
I am 45 and my Garmin says i have a vo2 of between 49 and 52. A year past march i did my vo2 max test when i started training and it was 51.8, in late september it was up to 64.5. Just before lockdown i did a different test but the results shows the vo2 max has increased again.
I am 56 years old and my max is 51, i take the bruce protocol treadmill test every 2 years as i had open heart surgery in 2002 [4x bypass] so i am sure this guy probably had closer to 60, maybe more? Bruce protocol tests differs as the incline is steep, starts at grade 10 and increases 2 every 3 minutes but the speed is slower, lots of info. of the specs on the internet. He did an excellent job, usually they get my heart rate to about 190
I´m cardiologist, exercise physiologist. I would like to know who among all do direct measure of VO2 with a cardiopulmonary stress test
Cool video I always wondered how this worked. Is it possible for a 32 year old to have the vo2 max of a 20 year old?
How much does your VO2 max differ between different disciplines? I did recently a VO2max test an ergometer, can I use these data to determine my zones for running? I don’t think so, but it should still be more accurate than the algorithm on my watch.
The RER reads over 1.09 in the end! Does that mean he is expelling more CO2 than he takes in O2 because of lactate build up?
Hello, I’d like to ask permission to use this in a YouTube video of my own. I will give the appropriate person credit.
