Just decided to make that transition over to trail runners going to test it out to see if I can get away with them I bought 4.5 altra lone peak.
Cascadia 11’s? the 14’s were out last year. The title of this video is a bit off
Very thoughtful and helpful video, nicely edited!
Inov8 for me but might give a try to the Kaptiva
Thanks for sharing!
Great info video for off-road running.. the most important bit of kit does need a bit of research. Good start.
I’m a trail runner show guy. Been 600 miles in mine since June. Just submitted Whitney in them 9.21.18. Very light and breathable.
Uhg, I’m so disappointed in inov8 recently. They have changed something, and the fit is just nothing close to what it was. They’ve also discontinued the rocklite 305, which was the only trail shoe that fit me.
I also tried a pair of altras for road running. They boast a wide toe box, but I came away with the worst blister over my metatarsal, which I’ve never ever had in any shoe.
I’m really struggling finding a pair of shoes since my inov8 rocklite 305s. I tried those inov8 in the video, and they didn’t fit at all. The heal just slips so much.
Caution them feet! Cautioning shoes are perfect for your beck pain.
Inov8 is the best brand for trail runners but I also like Salomon trail running shoes.
Hi Gear Geek, I recently got a pair of ‘MoreMile’, I use them round town, in a park (grass), but does anyone now what they will be like on track/off road. Anyone with experience or views on this make? thanks.
They’re a fantastic thing to have on hard ground, going up or down hill as they ease the knee strain. But in my opinion, after numerous weeks spent out in the bush, they’ll be completely pointless having them on going through that terrain. You’ll achieve nothing other than a slow careful walk, and potentially falling over from catching them on a stick, rock or sinking into mud. It looked pretty sketchy when you were balancing over that small lip of dirt, above that big rocky ledge near the river. Good on you for giving it a go and videoing, but I wouldn’t recommend it!Thanks

Where is the trail you are hiking at? That looks like a whole lot of fun.
I like most Americans don’t fall into high arch or slim foot design. The new balance 531 work great, but aren’t designed for a quick release shoe. My other favorite shoe is Nike Max Air unfortunately there not designed for Mountain use and will fall apart quickly exposed to wilderness environments. Tried tons of shoes in a CrossFit environments or triathlon world. Nothing seems to work as well as the new balance 531. Any ideas what might work for low arch and wide foot?
Spot on review for beginners trail runners.
Perhaps a bit of canvassing for Salomon.
However, everybody has to earn living somehow, I suppose.
Sponsored review on Salomon trail running shoes, would like to see some comparisons to other brands..
I’m a heavier runner, I feel I indeed need more cushioning in shoes. Can you recommend me some trail shoes with good cushioning?
Trail runners also don’t protect the bottoms of your feet when hiking on rocky terrain. The insoles are not as protective. When I had trail runners in the high Sierras I got really bad bruising on the bottom of my feet….not so with sturdy hiking boots.
How are they at actually running on the trail? Do you constantly have to worry about footing or are they pretty solid on uneven terrain sou you can move fast?
Off topic… I wish the Fenix 5x doesn’t look like a satellite on my wrist, love that watch!
thanks REI. You guys are great!! I absolutely adore all this great, and quality video content
Hi where is this place? I want to go there.
I live in the USA
Nice video, thanks. I’ve not tried the Altra Timp 2 (they’re on my list to buy). The Altra Olympus 3.5 is an excellent, cushioned trail shoe.
One thing to consider is age. I’m 60 and my wife is….well let’s skip that! As you get older you’ll probably have foot issues and wind up with prescription arch supports and in my case, arthritis in my feet. I wear Oboz now in low top and 3/4 and love them. Shoes too tight in the toes are painful. Wife wears trail boots, light weight Vasque I think, when we hike. She loves the support and stability. We’re finishing up a 2 week trip in Alaska and most of our gear came from REI. Great kit!
Anybody have recommendations for spartan race? I’ve been to a few races and I pretty much used whatever shoes I had. Terrible idea. The hardest and longest terrain were very mushy muddy.

Are Air trekkers good ones, how much did you pay for them? Also how long do they last, if you want to use them a lot?
I couldn’t tell you which is better I have 3 pairs of merrells 2 moab water proof and ventilator and a pair of fraxions and 1 pair of adidas trail runners I guess how many miles you want to go I will say is that the merrells will grip wet rocks like glue the trail runners are for like just a few miles I will tell you more soon
Off topic…. Any one have any idea about Quechua sh100 shoes??
could you swim with these on?
also I was thinking if going backing packing in central America and miles on foot, would you recommend it for hiking volcanoes?
Jumping stilts remind me of advanced warfare suits. Anyone think so too?
I thought they would be like running the whole time doing flips and stuff
For me, now that I’m having foot problems that prevent me from wearing lighter shoes these days, certain variations of boots (especially Oboz) and Dansko Pro XPs are what works for me.
The New Balance Hierro Boa is a sleeper that should be on this list!
No Peregrines? I suppose you can’t include everything. Nice review
Do USA ACTUALLY know a trail run? They always boast about any surface ability yet demos are always upon soft woodlands bed or mud seldom the long distance upon rubble and rock terrain in rainy England type environments!!!!
Great video Chris! Where did you buy the trail runners? I plan to do the overland track in early January 2020. I currently have a pair of Solomon hiking boots
is it possible to jump or run in high dirt terrain / mountains with those??
Salomon is very cool. Unfortunately, in Indonesia there is no official outlet, very difficult to find salomon.:(
im getting my first pair of air trekker stilts soon any advice?
What about running with a 30 kg weight vest? What shoes world be the best?
I would say having both with you is pretty nice. Boots for travel and trail runners for camp.
I am pretty sure you can find good solution on Woodprix page:)
Where did you get those stickers to go on the back? They look cool and I’d like to get some.
Super dry in south east england at the moment. All trails are almost as hard as the tarmac! I’m currently running in Nike Pegasus Trail and Nike Terra Kiger 5 for technical trails, only because I have a wide forefoot/toe area and they seem to fit well. Need to try Altra one day.
Can you define “long distances”?what distance you estimate when you say that?
http://bit.ly/1YloOP0
Fit my fat feet very nicely, I did not think they were narrow, super lite, look great, not too expensive.
was using hoka clifton 3s at a recent 5k trail and it didnt feel right. did feel i didnt have support on the outside of my feet and felt my feet would fall outwards lol
I keep seeing those particular Inov8’s popping up as best in review. Really tempted to get some. Running in Saucony Peregrine iso atm as they’re good for road as well as technical trail and mud (for me anyway). Great vid, thanks!
“in 2019, this list helped me decide for the best hiking boots scafe.shop/tbhb2019?Y5 hope it helps you out too!”
Dynafit..in WA STATE dry hills is excellent with grip and comfort…Speedgoat a bit More comfy but a little less grip w speed but not slow…maybe the same-nice Review! Audio was good here….anyway Peace to all.
Go fast go light, what’s the point.
Take your time enjoy the surroundings.
For dry trails I usually just use my road shoes, a pair of Brooks Adrenaline GTS. When it gets wet and muddy I use Saucony Exodus ISO 3 which have a tread pattern like a tractor tyre on the bottom. Very reassuring in muddy conditions.
Don’t think I could go too these after my barefoot trail shoes
Comparing the speedgoat to the captiva is a bit random, given one is for long distance and the other isn’t. Why not compare to the more cushioned la sportiva shoes such as the Mutant or Akasha.
While very clear, I find the audio for this video so weird? Like you are in an empty warehouse or something. It’s rather unerving:)
Plenty of dry trails in Australia. So there are many options for me to choose from. Thanks for the review. Very useful for a novice trail runner like me.
Nice round-up that importantly points out there’s no single right answer here. Where I live I have tarmac to run on at the start & end of any trail runs I do which has influenced my choice. Initially I blindly chose some Salomon trail shoes but found them hideous on tarmac (I realise how obvious this is with hindsight). I now run in Hoka Challenger ATRs which are a crossover shoe which is perfect for my circumstances they wouldn’t be the best on gnarly winter fell run, but that’s not my thing anyway.
I liked David Taylor’s review, it is really good. The 6 running shoes have got brilliant qualities, but they are all a bit expensive.
Trail runners are better for your feet, boots are really only needed for snow
Someone I’ll love to know what location is this? What country? Name of the trail?
Very beautiful trail, something close to Trinidad’s Hikeathon Matelot to Blanchi
“…and that my children is how the first bigfoot sightings lead to no bigfoots being caught”
“It never existed. Like the tooth fairy and santa clause. Someone saw something and had an over active imagination” xx
Please list the products you review in the description to make it easier to find the shoes you reviewd. A link to each product page would be even better. Great video, thanks!
Why do people keep calling them jumping stilts? The guy who invented them wasn’t trying to jump, he was trying to run fast like an ostrich! They’re RUNNING stilts!
glad to see the inov8 being the favorite! just got mine recently and i’m really happy with them so far.
7 year ago i had xt wing2 which I loved then they brought out the wings 3s which wouldn’t fit me, now Ive just bought some salomon xa lites trust me compared to them xt wing 3s these are crap. Bad fit, poor quality look shit and feel shit, I won’t be using at the weekend doing ben nevis ile wearing my scarpa or la, sportiva. Rant over
You forgot to mention the trail runners are prettier too. Good comparison of the two types. Trail runners for trail running and hiking boots for actual hiking for when you really are serious about hiking. Yes difficult to break-in, heavier, not near as pretty either. Just don’t confuse the two for what they were designed for as you never know what you are going to “Run” into.
Thank you. I’m literally about to go to try on Altra at that shop in Malvern. I’ve got Merrell Moab gtx, comfortable and water proof. When I did the overland last April I found them slippery on the rocky path just before you hit cradle cirque which caused me to injure my knee. The rest of the trip was painful. What do you think of the Altra’s grip on slippery rocks? I’m also going to try La Sportiva Raptors but Bogong has only limited sizes available. I too am doing the Overland Track again in early Jan. The Raptors have good reviews about their traction.
My oh my, it’s not like you need any help in the height department. Sorry, bad joke, I know. But seriously, this looks like a load of fun (a little crazy too, which is nothing new for you) and I hope you are doing great.
It seems like trail runners have a cult-like following these days… it’s the ultralight mindset, which at times is taken to an extreme.
Cool idea but seems very impractical and possibly dangerous. Imagine a trip and fall.
omg an actual comment section that isnt toxic and full of memes
This person doesn’t really motivate me to buy your products. Sorry.
New Balance’s Minimus are not designed to hike with heavy charge or/and long distance.
Didn’t mention the grip on the Hokas. I love my Hokas and have done many hundreds of miles on trails in the challengers. So I got the speedgoats for a fell race and quickly found myself slipping, sliding and falling once it got properly wet. They are fine in a bit of mud but not proper off road shoes for a UK winter.
Number 1 hoka one one Number 2 asics fujitrabuco 8 Number 3 new balance hierro v5
I like the bit where you said, ‘ apathy, I can take or leave it ‘.
So profound!
Another difference, at least for me: the soles of my feet get sore and my plantar fasciitis flares up when I wear trail runners on rooty/rocky trails, but not when I wear my low Oboz hikers with sturdier bottoms; so now I only use my runners on smoother and/or shorter trails. Anyway, I’ve been switching between the two all year and found it’s sure worth experimenting to see what works for your particular feet!
By far the most informative running shoes video I’ve seen. Great explanations:)
Nice vid, how long can you hike on these i mean are they tiring like normal walk? i plan to buy one and hike for many miles.
Great video. Extremely helpful, simplifying all the jargon and marketing language that makes buying more confusing than it needs to be.:)
By making sure they are as comfortable as a loyal friend. What covers your feet should give you freedom and security in your steps, basically support and balance adapt to anything. Great landscapes, the environment requires versatile footwear.
Is it possible to get wider (foot) pads for these?I ask because in my area (Florida Everglades) there are a lot of muddy patches and those narrow and small “feet” would sink right in. Other than that it would be a great way to increase my range stealthily to do some great birding.
I love the colours on them. These trail running shoes look real nice
Sounds like you the wrong size of boot my man. Always size up for when you’re going down hill or your feet swell.
Still have that “one trail” I can’t figure out what to wear on. Fourteen water crossings in 10.4 miles. Some knee deep. Trail mostly jagged tennis ball sized rocks. I want to wear a GTX with the dual layer thin-under-wool socks. But, constantly changing out to river shoes and back is draining the fun out of the trail.
I would go for the trail runners, but the soft soles would kill my feet on those rocks. But they would drain and dry.
Can’t keep changing out of my boots. But, I love those solid soles. Stable as a Mack truck with trekking poles.
Would REI consider carrying a product like Wiggy’s Lightweight Waders for river crossings? Or recommend a similar product or better solution? Please and thank you.
