What if I have body muscle but water retention… what can I do?
I have always had a pooch and remember hating it as early as 7 years old. 22 years later and same story by normal standards I’m considered “in shape” but I’ve always been unhappy with my stomach. I’ve kind of learned to just love my shape and give up the dream of having an actual flat stomach because if I haven’t been able to get rid of it for over two decades I doubt I’ll be able to.

If you are really skinny and have a low fat and muscle percentage due to illnesses or anything else it can be dangerous to not eat before sleeping because if you are to thin the first thing your body will burn is muscles NOT fat!!
So having a skinny body type eating dairy/soy or anything high in protein right before bed time is best ;D

Your comments about a tanked metabolism are where I’m at right now, I have spent most of this month lifting “heavy” 6 days a week and eating maintenance/very slight surplus. I realized back in January that I was maintaining at 1100 cal/day at 5’11” and 190lbs. I fell off the fitness wagon an gained some fat and lost some muscle gains. My lifts now are better than they were back in dec/jan now, and I can feel progress in my body even though it’s not visible. Picking up my kids, running up stairs, energy for long walks, are all improved

Hi, Marissa, my issue: I pull my thigh muscles very easily so I have to spend so long warming up my legs that I can never do a quick, regular workout, it always takes up too much time. You can guess what happens; I skip working out! Squats and lunges in particular pull my muscles. This has been going on for years, I’m not overweight, average fitness and my legs are strong. I have to be so careful. Why won’t this issue go away? X x
love love love you and all of your tips. I have always had a stomach pooch, even when I was barely 100lbs (I’m 5’7″ for reference). it’s because of my intestines pushing against my abdominal wall. I have implemented intermittent fasting on top of avoiding carbs and sugar, and I’ve lost so much fat around my ribs, but barely anything from my tummy, and I’m super okay with that! I have almost a 10″ difference between my natural waist and my hips. hourglass shape for the win hahaha
It’s hard being someone with a chronic illness and always being told it doesn’t matter how you look, focus on your health. When she said water helps you stop bloating I grabbed a water bottle and started chugging, and she is correct about eating before bed like 3-4 or more before bed because In the summer time I wanted to lose weight and I had trouble cause I would stay up till 1 bad ik but I would eat while staying up but that would be like 3 hours before I head to bed and I lost weight.. I don’t recommend staying up and yea because staying up will ruin your sleeping schedule, your emotions and your missing family time etc by sleeping so I don’t recommend:/

one thing that i’d really love to hear from you (as one of the more educated and rational fitness youtubers:P) is whether or not (and if yes, then how) it is possible to build muscle without having to lift a ton of weights, if you can’t do so for health reasons. i.e. if lifting anything heavy if not an option due to gynaecological reasons and squatting with weights is a no-no due to crappy knees and an ongoing effort to fix flat feet, which add to the knee issues. it might also be useful for those who exercise at home and don’t have access to gym equipment.

What really helped me know what was bloating me so I would have a food log for over a week and then I would start noting which foods made me feel extremely bloated and lo and behold, it was typically dairy and gluten!
Im a 16 year old girl and have been exercising a lot more in the past couple of months because of quarantine. I’ve been following videos but cant help but feeling that there has been no change, i ight have even put on weight. The thing is, ive been eating less and more mindfully so im not sure what to do i feel like my metabollism is very low. I eat around 1200-1700 calories a day it depends. ive mostly been doing floor exercises but ive often done spinning too as cardio. Does anyone have any recommendations tailored to me? my problem area is my belly for collecting fat, the rest i mostly just want to tone up. I’m around 56kg and 5 foot 5 inches by the way. thank you!

I used to have a very flat tummy! and you know what? my hormones were fucked. i was cold all the time. my hair was falling out. my body got hairier. my limbs were constantly falling asleep. sex drive nonexistent.

Yesss gut health is so important! Thanks for bringing that up. There is a brand I use that has probiotics and enzymes together called Digest Gold (enzymedica). I got it from Vitamin Shoppe. It works immediately and it’s great but it is strong. It will literally break down all of your food in your stomach and help tremendously in digestion. I use it at night bc it’s strong and might cause a little discomfort until you get used to it/eat better. But I highly recommend probiotics and enzymes especially for bloating.

Just came across your channel and already love your videos. You’re so natural and easy to watch. Tried the home pull up bar workout and can’t wait to try out some of these tips and other meal prepping advice.
Another main cause of bloating is lack of stomach acid! But there are ways to increase it.If you find that you are bloating within 30min of meals do this:
Drink 1tbsp of apple cider vinegar (the organic stuff with The Mother!) before your meal… this helps your stomach acid create the most efficient PH/acid level
Drink ginger tea during and after your meal… this increases the heat in your stomach to assist your stomach acid (you can buy ginger in tea bags or literally just slice some ginger in hot water)
Do NOT drink water 30min before a meal or 1.5hours after a meal… drinking water dilutes stomach acid

Hey Marisa:) Ive got a question and i really hope you can answer it. So I’ve been struggling with an eating disorder and decided that I need to stop counting calories. So I am eating intuitive right now and it is going great. I feel like my calories are roughly at maintenance. But sometimes I feel demotivated because I think I’m not getting anywhere with my physique because for losing fat i need to cut and for bulking i need to be in a surplus. I know getting my mental health in the right play is #1 priority but is my physique going to change even if I’m not cutting/bulking? Or is my body staying at the same place when I am at maintenance?

There is no way I can eat dinner 3-4 hours before bedtime, because my parents work late and we eat as a family… I usually finish eating around 9:20 and go to bed at 10. Is this a really big problem? Can I still have a flat stomach? Thank you!

I really loved this video. I’d say I learned more in the 6+ minutes of this video than I have by reading numerous fitness articles for a much longer amount of time. I do have a few questions though. If I’m wanting to lose fat in my midsection, as far as exercise, it would be better to start off with HIIT cardio and full body exercises/workouts, right? At what point would it be a good time to start doing ab-targeted exercises/workouts after consistently working to lose fat in the midsection? And would resistance exercises using the body’s weight as a form of resistance work for weight training, or does there need to be weights in use to be effective?

Intermittent fasting helps too. I find compressing the window that I eat/drink makes a big difference.
Also learning to engage the abs and have good posture.

What’s the difference between resistance training and weight training?
So uh i’m eating 800 calories a day, maybe 900.
AND OK THIS SOUNDS BAD I KNOW but i used to only eat 1300-1600 and gained weight without even growing.
Its been 2 and a half months and i’ve lost 6-7 pounds. so its not like i’m losing it like crazy which would signify that i’m starving, even if i had gone into starvation mode, my body would have adapted to the change in calories and started to lose weight
my energy levels aren’t any lower than they used to be and i have a big appetite and although i get full quickly i’m hungry very quickly after i’m full and i haven’t had any hunger problems, i don’t deprive myself and yes i eat strict but everything is healthy so i’m happy and i still get sufficient nutrients, i make sure i get healthy fats, vegetables, fruits, and protein every single day. i’m 15, 5’5 and 123 lbs (i used to be 130) so as you can see my description is healthy but people still say its unhealthy and i’m starving myself and i need to eat more…. thing is i wouldn’t be hungry enough to eat more. to me that would mean eating junk food more often…….. should i increase my calorie intake anyways?

Will this work if I’m bloated naturally? Like, serious, guys. I have to keep my stomach sucked in to look normal and if I let my tummy resume it’s natural state, I will look like I’m 6 months pregnant. I have a low, protruding cervix and it is impossible for my tummy to ever be completely flat. This has caused me to have such a bad body image and for years I struggled with eating and working out because I never saw this little bit of my lower abdomin being as flat as my upper abdomin.
I have just recently begun to accept that this is my body and I can’t change that aspect of it. I’m finally beginning to love my body as I work hard and I need to be happy with what I am gaining/changing and not what I can not change. ☺️

heres my personal advice, before getting ur stomach flat, these things won’t get it right away. You need exercise first, and these things will help you maintain it
Trying to turn my life around lmao.. I don’t workout, I’m almost overweight, extreme self hatred, eating nothing but junk, sleeping 16 hours a day.. I hope I can fix this and be happy for once lol can’t wait to finally love myself

I often see people who are thinking that if they are built narrow, they ‘should’ have a flat stomach. In fact, I realized it’s actually most of the time the opposite. Narrow built people (from the front) tend to be a little ‘wider’ from the side. That’s kinda normal xD
One tip that a lot of people overlook is pooping! Even if you’re pooping every day, if your poop looks like rabbit droppings (like mine did) youre not eliminating properly and have poop fermenting in your belly and causing the bad bacteria to overgrow which causes gas = bloating. Your poop should look like a banana and you should aim to poop EVERY DAY if you want a flat tummy!
If you’re having constipation or have poor quality poop try psyllium husk powder and kirkland optifiber prebiotic (that’s just the brand I useyou can use anything similar) every morning in a smoothie. I take 3tbl of psyllium powder and 1tbl of the prebiotic powder. That combo does the trick for me for a super flat tummy.
I eat a pretty healthy diet but have constipation cause by medications. I also tried really expensive probiotics for months and they did nothing for me, and pretty much everything else you could possibly think of. Psyllium fiber congeals and becomes solid in your intestines which then pushes out the compacted stool so you poop everyday, and the prebiotic feeds the good bacteria which help give you that perfect, healthy banana lookin poop!
For me, I really have to use both fiber types to get a perfect healthy stool and flat tummy BUT the psyllium fiber is the most helpful. So try that first. And start off very gradually so your body can adapt bc increasing fiber can cause some gas if you go too fast!

You cannot target fat loss in specific areas, everyone loses and gains fat in different parts of their body. Doing ab workouts builds muscle, it does not cause your body to burn the fat on your stomach.

But then others will say thats a myth and worst advice, eating frequent meals causes insulin spike which triggers fat storage, so you should ideally just eat two or even only one larger meal a day. what is right and what is wrong? oh lord

I’ve been struggling to lose weight for years despite not eating badly or drinking sweet or diet drinks. I haven’t drank sodas (fizzy drinks) since I was in high school. Since watching your videos and other videos by a professor of nutrition, I’ve changed up my diet. I’ve added more healthy fats, started drinking water before every meal, and added a protein shake. Among other things. I’ve been incorporating changes over the last month. On Thursday my weight had actually fallen by a pound or two. I saw a number I haven’t seen in a few years. It isn’t much but it’s a start. It seems almost impossible to budge the scales in the right direction since I hit peri-menopause. I can’t tell you how happy seeing that number made me feel Hopefully it will continue. If nothing else I feel amazing! Thank you!

Visceral fat is fat around abdominal organs!!! Like the liver!! Not dermical fat. It only accumulates there when the subendothelial adypocites cannot hold more fat. You lose it before abdominal fat because it damages your organs. The stubborn abdominal fat is NOT that then!!!

Bloating happens to me a especially when it comes to my period. (Be mature about it because it is a thing)
1. Boost testosterone by weight training couple times a week. 2. Sleep enough. 70% testosterone gets made during sleep. 3. Drink water to avoid bloating. 4. Negative calorie balance. 5. but don’t cut more than 500 calories since it will get you into starvation mode. 6. 5-6 small meals. 7. eat 3-4 hours before bed(has been debunked, but eating too late ruins your sleep). 8. Do HIIT training. 9. stress less. Stress makes you store stomach fat. 10. Only doing crunches are not effective. Focus on diet and cardio instead. Bigger stomach muscles can make you look thicker if there is fat hiding them.
