How to Treat Tight Calf Muscles After Running Causes and Symptoms. Running is a high-impact activity that places repetitive stress on the calf muscles. Calf tightness Treatment.
Never rush a stretch. Stretch slowly and hold the stretch for 15 to 30 seconds. Do not stretch through pain.Marathon runners, triathletes, and older individuals who do lots of strenuous exercises may be at higher risk of developing tight calves or even muscle cramps. Other causes of calf pain or cramping.
Tight calves can be uncomfortable and cause difficulty walking. Tight muscles may result from overuse or cramps, but several treatments and stretches can help. The calf muscles, or gastrocnemius.
Causes of Tight Calf Muscles Compartment syndrome may cause calf muscles to tighten. In this condition, the size of the muscle increases than the sheath surrounding it. This results in pressure, pain and restricted movement. In many cases the cause of muscle tightness is actually muscle weakness. Recent research describes ‘fatigue induced muscle disorder’ where an athlete reports a firm, tight muscle.
An increase in amount or intensity of training exposes a muscle group to greater load, it fatigues and becomes tight. What causes tight calf muscles? Tight calf muscles may be caused by a combination of issues. Foot biomechanics.
Biomechanical problems of the foot or from running style can increase the strain on the calf muscles. Overpronation is when the foot rolls in too much or.Muscle stiffness is when your muscles feel tight and you find it more difficult to move than you usually do, especially after rest. You may also have muscle pains, cramping, and discomfort.Muscle cramps may occur due to a variety of reasons, however some of the more common causes include, Dehydration, which leads to drop in the levels of sodium, calcium, potassium or magnesium levels in the body.
Certain medications like diuretics and statins can lead to cramps especially since they alter the metabolic functioning of the cells.Common reasons in older people include degenerative joints in the hip or knee. Elevated pressure in the calf that is called compartment syndrome can result in calf pain with walking as well.
Muscle tightness – In my opinion tight muscles are the most overlooked reason for calf pain with walking. This is especially the case in elderly people. The calf is made up of three muscles, including the two heads of the gastrocnemius and the soleus. Other causes for the calf muscle to become strained during a run include practicing ineffective warmup and cooldown routines, becoming dehydrated, or overpronating, according to Runners Rescue.
Recognizing a.Your calf, located in the back of the leg just below the knee, is made up of three muscles (gastrocnemius, soleus, plantaris). While injury to any of these may produce calf pain, conditions that affect the blood vessels, nerves, or tissues that envelop your calf muscles may do so as well.Other potential contributing factors that can cause recurring calf tightness for runners can include: Cadence (over-striding running technique).
One of many adverse effects of this can be substantially greater impact forces on landing, than the runner who runs with a quick cadence and far less impact loading of all lower limb structures.Lack of stretching is probably the most common cause for tight calf muscles. Static stretching is great for the calves and can be easily incorporated after your runs. Simply practice the stretches below and hold them for about 20-30 seconds each. 1.
Ice is an effective method to treat sore shins. Foam rolling your calf may also alleviate tightness and pain. It increases blood flow to the tissue and can help smooth out muscle knots causing pain. Similarly, stretching the calf and the muscles and tissues around the shin may reduce soreness, tension and pain. Most runners aren’t strangers to injury.
Most of them are familiar with such maladies like shin splints, stress fractures, ankle injuries, and maybe even peroneal tendonitis. But it’s the serious runners who are most familiar with experiencing calf cramps when running.

I also suffer from leg cramps and I take Quinine sulfate to supposedly help. I have had these knots and cramps going on 20 years and even have gone to see if I have had a blood clot in my leg…(nope, all good).
The 3-minute 20 sec part of the exercise. I gave it a go the pain was incredible.. I’ve been suffering with calf pain and today was quite a painful day.(worse ever ) My right leg. tysm at school I was playing tig or tag (I know I’m a bit old for it but it’s quite fun sometimes) and my friend was on and he was chasing me and I ran way too fast and stretched my leg out words to take a stride and my calf muscle tore it was so painful and I didn’t know about it so I hought the pain would go away in 24 hours but it didn’t! It’s nearly been 48 hours now the pain isn’t as bad but it still really hurts and I can’t run. This video really helped me get rid of the pain so I can run again! Thank you!
I have had an achy pain in my outer left calf for a while. Can muscle tightness sitting and standing a lot cause calf pain? I still have no issue sprinting or doing agility ladder. I rarely stretch and sometime feel like it comes from my sciatic. Not sure if I should focus on hips, glutes or legs or overall flexibility, or just workout more consistently or stop sitting for long periods in my off time. Also subscribed

Hi James, Helpful video thank you. A few months age I started to do a lot of skipping. Looking at your video it would seem to have been a soleus muscle. After self deep massage and foam roller this improved and enabled my daily skipping, although I still feell venerable in that area when skipping. What can I do to substantially strengthen this area?
When I start running my soleus feels tight and painful, but after 6 of 7ks they loosen up and pain goes away. Is there something I can do to prevent this?

If I don’t heal in a week I’m quitting track. I can’t keep doing this to my body. I feel like I will end up in a wheelchair soon. I’m always in so much pain a few hours or sometimes a day after a race. It sucks because I’m train hard but I don’t know if I can bear the pain anymore. It’s become so painful to walk.:(

Hello doctor is applying knee cap over calf muscle is helpful while walking?
My calf muscles are very tight but no pain unless I put pressure on them (meaning press on them with my hand). Doesn’t bother me. Should I do these exercises or leave it alone??
I love how different professional will tell you the exact opposite shit. This guy preaches raising the heel, others preach flat. Who is right? Does anyone really know? Having been to so many chiropractors, Orthos, Podiatrists, and PTs I’m becoming convinced that no-one knows anything and they are all just selling snake oil.
thank you so much! Can the pain and tightness and tiredness in the calves be caused by the wrong way of walking?

Hey doc, I strained my calf running, felt a small pop and was sore for 2 weeks and went away, 6 months later i feel mild pain still what does this mean?
Doc Jo thank you for this video. I used to exercise before but after kids were born I stop regular exercises. However, I’m back to it and I’ve started couch to 5K running a UK programme which has been successful. However previously I knew my calf muscles and gastrocnemius were very sore and now during running I experience some very sharp and excruciating pain on the back of my legs. I’m in week 3, third run and I give myself a day off ( as the prog suggests). I’ve used this video twice now and it’s been helping. However do I need to do both knee and calf muscle exercises and is this before or after the run?
Thank you again.

Tone and tight, is it normal for my calf to be quite tender when I massage it. This is whether I’ve been for a run or when I’m on rest days. I regularly do basic stretches every day (one stretch for calves, the second one you showed, one for thigh, one for hamstrings and then I stretch of the top of my foot out pushing it against the floor. I know I have the same issue with my hamstrings and wondering if a foam roller would help also?
My left leg has felt like it’s got a hole in between the inside calf muscle, between it and the bone. It’s felt uncomfortable as long as I can remember, I’ll give these a shot and try to remember to update lol
This is so helpful!! Will keep doing these, so as to relax the calves
I had tight calf muscles problems, over time
I stand on a 1/2″ plank shoulder width, placing the ball of the foot only on the plank and let your heels touch the floor, after any long walk or run, best done after fa full stretch, as the muscles relax and become comfortable in this stretched position.
RESPECT and keep working
I was running about 15-18 miles per week training for a race. Once day I felt sudden pain and I thought it was a Charlie horse. However, I was limping for about a week and finally after 12 days walking normal. Doesn’t hurt while walking now. Is it possible for a Charlie horse to last that long? I’m guessing was a strain. How do I know if I’m ready to run again? Ty ty!
dr joe advice needed, 2 years ago i felt a pop in my calf, it was my soleus, still gets very tight and i can feel slight tares if i push off whilst playing rugby which just sets me back time after time, I know the stretches i need to do but how frequent do i need to do them? every morning? morning and evening? please help

Hi, thank u very much. Can u make a video on tight adductors? Because it limits my range of motion and when i stretch them i feel it in the mefial part of my knee.
I know this vid is old & you’ll probably never see this, but just in case you do, i want to say THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH!! I recently started working out & about a week ago after working out, my calfs & knees were hurting so bad to the point i could barely get out of bed & walk.
I tried icey hot, knee compression sleeves, cold compresses, nothing was working for my discomfort. Found this video last night, did ALL of the stretches & was able to do my workout with very little discomfort. Don’t know why i didn’t find you sooner. This is exactly what i needed. Again, THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!
Now i just need to figure out how to lose 40lbs in 2 days
Loved the video it was perfect for my old man pain! However I will say I personally find it more effective putting the bent foot behind me rather than infront and I would get a deeper stretch! Try it out
Been having the most painful calf pain the past two days but once I’ve tried your video, the pains just gone thank you very much for the video! effective and easy
Thank you for this very helpful video!
I have pf and haven’t done any active stretches in quite a while. Today I tried them and afterwards had like a burning sensation and tingling in the foot and ankle. I stretched well but did not overdo.
The sensation I felt after stretching, might it be a “warning sign” or would you say it’s rather normal? Thank you
This’ll definitely help my tight calves, but was wondering if this also increases ankle mobility? Sitting all day has tightened my calves and i can’t keep my feet flat when squatting:'(
I”m a runner and my calves are super tight. I haven’t found the right stretches to loosen up my calves, but I think the real key is going to be foam rolling to get rid of adhesions in persistent, chronic calf tightness, right?
I m suffering from back pain from long time thats why i take surgery but after surgery i can’t walk properly by left leg, my left leg calf muscle become tight can i do this exercise, it can’t my back or?
human body is very fragile. I have to reduce my running habit because of calf cramp and knee crunch sound syndrome.
Can squats or deadlifts cause tight calves? When i did squats or deadlifts the day before running, then i get a lot more pain while im running
Ive been looking for videos that target that part but all i found was for shins, ankles etc so im very happy i finally found someone that talks abt that specific part. I think i got it from doing jump rope and i let it “heal” for like a week but every time i go back to jump rope it starts hurting after only a min or so… its annoying me
Hi James, I recently pulled a calf during a 5K on a slight uphill section. It’s a recurring problem, but what I’m struggling with is actually identifying which muscle is damaged. You see, I can push my toes against resistance, even pretty heavy resistance, with either a straight or bent knee and there’s no pain but it’s very painful when I actually walk on it. The pain feels quite deep inside, low and towards the inside of my calf which would suggest soleus, but why no pain with bent knee toes push, just walking/running?
I’m at a fork in the road. I know my L. Hammie is tighter than my right but according to pros still flexible. But recently I’ve noticed a kind of “shift” not so much snap in my L. Posterior calf, right near the knee for example sometimes during deadlifts, especially with shifts in toe stance. Would this be a calf problem, hamstring problem, or both? I’ve been trying to stretch both out and do some myofascial release, will be trying your videos and see how they fare!
I was training then both my calves cramped up real bad and now hurt badly these stretches for it
i was doing jump rope and i cant walk without extreme pain in my left calf
I can’t walk properly with my 2 feet so I’m don’t move my feet
Hello Dr., does this work well even if I have a slight tear?
How long after the injury do you recommend starting these stretches?
Just look for Unflexal page. You will find there the best workouts instructions.
Thanks so glad I found you… I’ve been so many stretches but obviously not the right ones
This is fab hurt calf muscle again after increasing speed at park run going to be trying the demonstrations it’s appears to be the lower muscle 2nd time this year “def too much too soon on speed work”
Are the rollers with the protrusions better? Or should I get the normal kind?
Does this work if I’m over weight?
Bc honestly my right leg hurts a lot when I’m standing a lot and sometimes I feel like crying because of the pain I have.
Hello, I have a question. I hear that before exercise you do dyamnic stretches (movement into exercise you do) then exercise then static stretching… i keep injuring my damn anckles and trhing to prevent that..:( I’m confused on how to warm up properly.. and do you do a warm up that i think includes dymanic stretching then exercise then cool down with yoga for statuc stretching? Thank you!! Currently recovering anckle injuries.. is there anything i can do in the menatime? Im scared to stretch incase my anckles get worse again haha and these will come in handy once im back n going again:)
I have extreme tightness in left calf I can only run a quarter mile.

I have never been a runner but am currently in a hotel based quarantine and running is one of the main exercise options available, my legs are killing me even though I’ve been stretching, from my research it seems that I can just keep pushing through the pain, is this correct, obviously doing all I can to warm up and cool down..

My calves really hurt after calf raises. It’s been 3 weeks and they are getting better day by day but I still can’t get my heels on ground when I walk. Do you think that these work?
I went for a run on the morning, and the calf on my right leg was so tight!
calf pain always be my main problem. Thanks for the video james!
I get pain but on the side of my calfs like the side of the ankles, any help???
Bruh have ever worked out your legs? Never seen such non existent calfs.
Nice video tho ^^
I’m looking for more movements for my calf injuries other than my coach had recommended me. Definitely helpful. Thank you so much!
P. S.: Stop commenting on his face and the way he talks, for heaven’s sake. We’re here for advice and suggestions-_-
Hi James,
Thanks for your videos, they are very helpful and informative.
I’m currently nursing a sore calf muscle (mainly soleus) from yesterday’s run. I’m a new runner and have had previous hip problems. If watched quite a few of your videos, my main question relates to the order to watch them / complete the exercises in?? I.e. would you master 4 exercises for beginners before moving in to 4 must do glute exercises?? Thanks very much. Brian
Somehow this makes my calves tighter. Am I doing something wrong?
I immediately felt a major difference after doing these stretches. Thank you so much!!
My outside TOP soleus is perpetually sored…was it due to my push-up as you mentioned? How to correct that?
I was doing calf raises and then the next day I was in severe pain and even more the next day to the point I can not walk without support
Hello dr jo, what does it mean if i have pain at my gastrocnemius muscle? Whenever i climb the stairs and also when i tip toe then i can feel the pain ( mainly when i tiptoe)…does it mean that i tore a muscle or does it mean smtg else?
Thanks for the great vid American Muscle Justin!!! I know that’s who you really are
Thanks so much for these stretches! Can you recommend which type of foam roller is best for the calf vs other muscle groups?
Hi, do you recommend me doing some glutes/booty excercies while working on closing my diasis recti? If you do, what booty excersis should I stay away from so my gap doesn’t open more?
Thank you so much bro!
You have no idea how much this video helped me.
I work 12/14 hours a day of hard labor and go to the gym on my 2 days off, and my calves are always sore and tight to the point I get cramps on my calves.
well, not anymore, I bought a foam roller and used it as you directed on the video along with the stretching, man! What a difference.
Thank you so much
I’m forever grateful!!
I use a rolling pin from the kitchen while in the tub with hot water and epsom salt
I am assuming that doing eccentrically loaded heel drops with a bent leg will help the soleus be able to Berger handle the demands of running much the same way doing them straight legged helps the Achilles’ tendon, am I correct in saying this
I’m training for a marathon, this video is perfect timing! I’ve been noticing that my calves have been getting tighter. I have one question: Should I do a short warm up before going into the stretches each time I do them?
i have chronic painful tight calves. i stretch them everyday but it goes back to tight the day after. what could it be? my calves/restricted dorsiflexion put me in APT and make my foot/hip flexors tight.
thanks you for this vid
If anyone doesn’t want to invest in a foam roller I use a round metal bottle x
It really hurts when I tried using it for my back.:( It came as one of the free gifts for trying Tai Cheng’s Ti Chi program, in which I wound up returning. I will now retrieve, dust off, and attempt using it w/this video.:) Ty
mine is very different….. whenever i run or get fatigued, its not the lower part of the body that hurts……. its in the upper body and it feels like sharp
pain.sometimes in ribs, sometimes in my lower abs……… i can’t run long because of this…… what is that kind of pain? what can you suggest?
Hello..
One question
I have soleus rupture 9 mm. Am not feeling pain during Exercises but when I want to strech calf muscles, both of them, am feeling discomfort. IT is very important to do exercices and streches. Or exercies Are enough?! Thank you
Hi Dr. I wanna ask that when i run i feel inside a popping sound in my calf and it hurts. I feel a little pain all day.. No help i got from doctor. Its been two months. I can stand on my toes and heels correctly. I dont know what to do about it if there is no apparent problem except the popping up and pain..
Felt sore the day after doing these exercises. Will be doing these for a while and see if the pain will go away when i run again.
I used Michelle Kenway’s video to fix my caves when they were very very tight. Only had to do this once and got the pain to go. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FtbKGWfQVCk
Michelle is a pro! She rocks.
I need to know about tennis elbow as i am suffering from it for a while. Thanks
Hi, Doc! I was diagnosed with Acute gastrocnemius strain 2 weeks ago. I’m done with the medications (pain relievers and muscle relaxants). However, my left calf is too tight and I’m having problems sleeping because of some pain. What should I do?
Anyone in a treadmill and then their calf’s start cramping but you keep going and then the next day you feel like shit and the day after that you literally cannot walk when you get up or sit down for a long period of time
if someone puts the foot the a surface as like 1:03 does not need stretch its calves.
i danced a little too vigorously the other day and now my calves are sore…this video helped a lot, will definitely be remembering to stretch better in the future!
The muscles in my calf are aches sore with extreme discomfort. I am constantly massaging calf and below calf area please advise

Hi Jared! Nice video again. Just nice for me to roll my legs tomorrow during rest day
Did VO2 submaximal / maximal lab data collection today for my class, crazy shin / calves pain during 15% incline treadmill
Wow! Thank you so much, Dr. Jo ♀️
The 2nd exercise in particular is amazing!
Would you recommend doing all the stretches in the video one by one in succession in a sort of routine, or to simply choose one of the stretch exercises at any point in the day and switch it up every so often?
Excellent, I could barely walk after exercising from the pain, then after doing this, I walk with such ease and can jump rope way longer during my daily routine
makes sense now, I had a load of problems a while back and noticed my calves were tight. Did some stretches and it almost cured the problem overnight. channels like this are incredibly helpful, saves wasting time at the doctors.
I’m not sure what to do it feels tight and I can’t be comfortable in any way or fall asleep cause it doesn’t feel normal like my other leg.
I would love a video for feet. I have high arches and I believe that I may now have planter facitis in at least one of my feet. If you have anything in the works for this I would really enjoy watching (and putting into effect).
Did a 100 calf raises for two days straight that’s why I’m here
Thanks for sharing. Just the stretching alone made the pain go away.
THANK YOU XS A MILLION! 50 miles ran since shutting down gyms and dang is that muscle you just taught me to stretch tight!!! Blessings
I was working out my calfs and was sore the next day and today
I got really tight calves. I have even experienced really bad cramps in that area, especially in the middle of the night. Thanks for the video.
Thank you for posting this video. I picked up a calf strain somehow and being in quarantine I have to mend myself so thank you once again Dr. Jo
Dr.Jo, I have terrible pain in my upper calf. Could this possibly be from a tight hamstring? Thank you!
Thank you so much Doctor Jo. I was in pain for over a week until I found this video. After doing all the stretches and exercises shown just once, I am pain free! It’s like a miracle cure!
My Klaw (right hand) has lots of joint pains these days as well. And I wasn’t sure what to do for hand stretch
This pain is not after running it is while running in thumbnail spot and also side of both feet
I am proof that these work! It helps with my calf pain so much!
I was in pain. I was popping pain meds like skittles….
These stretches from a few of your videos. they work almost right away!
I had horrible pain on my heel and the top of my foot.
I would run come home and after I would have instant pain.:( thank you sooo much for these videos
Hey Dr Jo, would you suggest using a foam roller during the early stages of a recovery for a grade II strain? Thanks!
Hi doc, is there any exercise to get rid of spider veins, and why do they come on our feet? Thanks, love u!
My part just lower to calf hurts when i run, just above the point you mentioned in this video. The thing which is weird is the pain is more in left leg.
Can you please suggest something.
I am having pain right above that section of the outer calf on my left side. Is that the same thing? I am not a runner at all.
Pullled both calf’s at the same time at wrestling practice six months ago, stayed home injured for a few days and got back after it.
My calves are much more prone to soreness, pain, and cramping.
I don’t think I’ve fully recovered since, maybe this can help
Not a runner, but I like walking on the treadmill with max incline. Very helpful! Thank you
I have pain at that spot that I can hardly touch it, been that way for years, when I first get up in the mornings I can barely walk because of how much it hurts takes me 15-30 min to actually get walking and I don’t run hardly any but I think something is wrong with my ankles cuz I can’t touch my heels to the ground, I’ve literally walk on my toes all my life, tried doing different stretches nothing I ever do will ever put my heel to the ground unless I’m sitting down not sure what to do
I’m a competitive tap dancer and lately some of the jumps I’ve been doing have caused some strain, these have really helped out, thank you!
Is it possible to have a tight calf from sciatica? Will these help this?
Hi all, I’ve been trying to find an insole that, when I wear my high heeled boots, will stop that awful pain in the ball of my foot and ankle. I have tried gel insoles but they don’t work. I really like my boots and I want to wear them for longer than an hour without having this pain in my feet. Any advice greatly appreciated.
