Asana is the physical practice of yoga poses. In addition to referring broadly to the physical aspect of yoga, asana can also be used to describe a single pose, as in, “The handstand is an asana that is really hard for me.” What most people call yoga could more specifically be called asana. Yoga has eight limbs.
An asana is a body posture, originally and still a general term for a sitting meditation pose, and later extended in hatha yoga and modern yoga as exercise, to any type of pose or position, adding reclining, standing, inverted, twisting, and balancing poses. The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali define “asana” as “[a position that] is steady and comfortable”. Patanjali mentions the ability to sit for extended periods as one of the eight limbs of his system. Thanks for this video, since I am German I am attending a yoga teacher training in Germany right now which is accredited by AmericanYogaAlliance. Some of the lessons are held in English, so your video nevertheless is very helpful for me also to refresh the Sanskrit names. Did not find something like this in German on YouTube although Yoga is so popular over here, too.

My dear speaker the pronunciation varies but if you read it in Devanagari आसन remains the same so asanaaaaa is incorrect while speaking. Also please check pronunciation of Sanskrit because it is not with an “i” it is संस्कृत

I have started doing some Sarvanga and Hala but I get intense pain in my lower back when my legs are elevating up to 90 degrees at around the 45 degree angle. Has anyone else experienced this? I’m physically and mentally healthy but a Yoga beginner. And I’m Male. If that maybe has something to do with it? Any advice is welcome. Cheers now.

Every yogi should switch to eco friendly mats or just do it directly on ground. These fancy PVC yoga mats take thousands of years to degrade and even then produce toxic chemicals and recycling also produces toxic gases not to mention that it’s rarely recycled. What’s worrying is that these yoga mats are being increasingly used in India too these days instead of just sticking to how yoga has been done for many many years. Yoga is one of the ways you connect to nature, not ruin it.
If you already have those PVC yoga mats, there’s no point of throwing them away without using it because it will eventually end up in landfills anyway. But if you are buying a new one, BUY AN ECO FRIENDLY ONE. There are many options online from natural rubber+ cork to cotton ones.
Don’t be discouraged if you fall out of your asana. It’s normal and everyone does it. Just continue as you please. You, are the one in control!

AND What a journey.. i practise for about 1.5 hours most days..lotsa back bends lotsa hand stands lotsa forward bends both sitting and standing..lotsa breathing..lotsa o0000ommmmssss..and lotsa lotsa lotsa..and i feel bldy great..i can do things now i that i couldnt do ANY time in my life..OH and also i have had a hip replace ment and only have 1 kidney.. so if you are thinking of doing it get into it..DONT be SQUARE..its an endless journey..BUT if you do GET your selfe a teacher..NOT a instructor..which most of these so called teachers are..It takes a Looooong time to be a teacher. For people who have not read it, here is a book by Dr. Lipton appearing in this video“The wisdom of your cells.” It presents some interesting points on the roles of the mind in biological processes in life although including some simple metaphors that are not accurate from a serious scientific point of view. I do not think this fact ruins the value the book because it targets the people not having a strong scientific background and tries to give general ideas about the topic.

Yoga by Mircea Eliade will make clear the concepts and the aim in an organised way. That is why the book is famous. Jumping from snippet to snippet itself is stressful…leave it to modern man and he ll muddy everything according to his disturbed personality arising from the urban madness in which he lives daily…the environment cut off from Nature!! As a rule, in psychospiritual endeavors that have a goal, there is little progress until the “goal” is relinquished.
“Coping” is temporary; transcendence leaves a change.
Exercise caution in applying our left-brain analytical “science” (tekne or episteme”*) as it may be counterproductive; especially in measuring the effects. Same with these short-term practices; they aren’t so real. Patanjali nailed it 2500 years ago. “Prana” not measurable, and is certainly not the same as oxygen as so many teachers conflate; nor is it identical to molecules or hormones or or or.
The anatomy and physiology follow the spirit, not the other way around. The brain is a tool, not the boss.
And this idea of raising the parasympathetic system is probably a fallacy; balance is reasonable. ( You know what increased parasympathetic tone does?)
You either know it or you don’t, as Krishamurthy might put it.

There is a private university that offers a master in yogic science; I investigated the course and declined. I don;t want a curriculum for something that should grow organically.

I started Baptiste power yoga about a year ago. I have started practicing regularly (3-4 hours a week). I am hoping to increase that time. It is drastically changing my mind and my body is changing too. I am so happy that this came into my life.
Having practiced yoga since October of 2019, I fell off during the beginning of quarantine. For the last six weeks however, I have practiced every day with few exceptions. Needless to say life is much better when I am practicing yoga. I look and feel great, my anxiety is under control, and I look forward to practicing each day. The improvement of depression is to be expected because the depressive group was engaging in two things that have already been proven to reduce and/or eliminate depression: physical exercise and social interaction. By doing group yoga these groups were engaging in both at the same time. I feel the results would have been the same if the groups had done another form of group exercise as well that wasn’t yoga or meditation based. (not to say that yoga specifically doesn’t have it’s benefits, but it’s important to separate facts.)

I really appreciate Yoga with all the benefits it comes. But you can’t just start calling some ancient principles “scientific”. Science just means that you gather data and test your hypotheses empirically. It’s something else.
Remember, this was discovered in what we call 3rd world country, India.
Sometimes I think we westerner are the 3rd world actually.
Nothing is called anything ‘ in yoga ‘. Prana, Chitta, Manas etc. all are concepts mentioned in the Sanatan Vedic Dharma. Yoga itself is central to Dharma and is not a separate thing. The physical exercises or Hatha Yoga is the gross or baser form which can help in the realization of the more subtle Gyana Yoga, Kriya Yoga and Bhakti Yoga.

अनिश्चित काल का भूत, भविष्यत्, वर्तमान दिख सकता है।
सूक्ष्म शरीर के द्वारा दिव्य जगत जैसे स्वर्ग, नर्क, इंद्रलोक, नागलोक, पितृलोक, सिद्धलोक, वैकुंठ, ग्रह, उपग्रह, मंदाकिनी, ब्रह्मांड आदि की यात्रा हो सकती है।
घ) यौगिक क्रियाएँ:
आसन, बंध, मुद्रा या प्राणायाम की स्थिति बन सकती है। जैसे-
आसनवज्रासन, मण्डूकासन, सर्वांगासन, शीर्षासन, उत्तानपादासन, भुजंगासन, मयूरासन, ताड़ासन, शवासन, P.T., आदि।
प्राणायमभस्त्रिका, कपालभाति, भ्रामरी, उज्जायी, कुम्भक, पूर्ण कुम्भक, आदि।
मुद्राखेचरी, शाम्भवी, ध्यान, मुख आदि।

जब ध्यान न कर रहे हों तब भी खाते-पीते, उठते-बैठते, पढते-लिखते, आते-जाते, लेट्रीन-बाथरूम में, सोते समय, गाडी चलाते समय अर्थात् हर समय अधिक से अधिक उस “दिव्य संजीवनी मंत्र” का मानसिक जप करें।
इस “दिव्य संजीवनी मंत्र” का सतत् जप का अभ्यास करने पर कुछ ही दिनों में अजपा जप अर्थात ऑटोमेटिक जप प्रारंभ हो जाएगा। आप चाहोगे तब भी बंद नहीं होगा।
दैनिक अभ्यास में 15-15 मिनट का प्रातः व संध्या ध्यान करना चाहिये।
I have been doing yoga on and off over the years and lately I’ve gone back to the practice and been doing it everyday, my allergic rhinitis is easing off, back and other bodily pains are relieved. Aside from those, I feel happier and less stressed. So it really makes a difference.

Every universe is covered by seven layers – earth, water, fire, air, sky, the total energy and false ego – each ten times greater than the previous one. Great to point out that yoga is not simply a form of sports as it is prevalently believed today. Yoga originally means discipline and Yoga poses “Asana” means “the place where gods sitting” (the gods are ones in Indian culture, not related to the one in Christianity.) It is a way for spiritual awakening through physical approaches more than for obtaining cool physical traits such as strength and flexibility. When you keep a pose, Asana, good things will naturally happen to you in all demotions of your existence, which, I think, was described as “the god coming down to you and sitting there with you.” There should be scientific principles underlining its significance, which will keep coming out as illustrated in this video.
Whenever I feel really sad, and I’m crying, with thoughts of hurting myself I immediately start doing yoga.

I have been practicing Yoga almost daily since 2018, and I completely agree with everything mentioned in this video. My temperament completely changed and I’v become more accepting of myself and others. To put is simply, Yoga changed my life.
It is INCREDIBLE to imagine how the enlightened YOGIS of ancient India had found out which YOGA posture would be beneficial not only physically and mentally for the human body but also spiritually thousands of years ago when no sophisticated instruments were available????

The Whey is stupid but eh, they appease of course many. Rainforest Alliance, with non vegan products? Okay… Plenty bitch about the calories in here… Uh, one medium apple is around calories, one medium organs is around calories, etc… These drinks have more than two fruits. Big fucking deal. If anything, feels like you get less calories. Sure, there’s some additives, like any, but nothing to freak out over. Fructose is very safe and needed. Low sugar levels actually will put you into seizure and such. The only bad thing about bottled fruit drinks in general is that a lot of ’em don’t have much if any fiber. Juicing isn’t that good, wastes products (and you of course will spend more money) since it strips of fiber. If you’re having juicing with a whole fruit or something with fiber, sure. Smoothies taste better. These use purees and such. Obviously not all of them are not pure juice drinks. They’re generally awesome. I remember when they first got popular years ago.

I almost burned 1k kcal in almost 2.5 hours. Instead of 10k steps for 482 calories burned, I did almost that with 6609. Ever since a lockdown is declared in India I’ve been practicing yoga for about 45min every single day without a break. It’s started impacting me in a very positive way which I experienced not only physically but also mentally. Although I’m working from home due to the corona pandemic but I feel more focused and productive at work, I feel more energetic and lively, I speak to my parents more often and I spend time with myself. I’m into a little stressful profession and yoga really helps me to stay calm. Besides yoga I also try to meditate for 15min but not regularly. I feel my perspective towards life and nature is slowly changing. Yoga indeed is a way of life.
there is abosolutely nothing scientifric about yoga it’s purely spiritual any yogi sitting in his ashram will tell u that, when u do yoga ur messing with spirits and inviting them in, like the kundalini serpant spirit that wraps around the base of the spine and causes uppl to have delusions in the mind, yoga is demonic ppl stay away from it.

My teacher and I use it to differentiate between
asan: a linguistic description given to express the relationship between various parts of the body in the moments of full puraka (inhalation) and rechaka (exhalation); without anything but a conditioned, subconscious intention toward abhyantara kumbhaka (breath retention); whilst actively inviting the body to soften as much as possible and the breath to flow as freely as possible
asana: an awareness state during a period of perceived stillness through several phases of the breath, that challenges and often undermines the sense of physical self as a finite definable, localised object
Though we’re not correct in the etymological sense, it does keep words to a minimum when teaching a class of experienced practitioners. This nurtures a quiet environment in which the conscious awareness of vinyasayoga can be explored. We’re kinda nerdy like that 😉
