Thanks for the great tip on running at Disney. I’m scheduled to run the Disney Star Wars 1/2 Marathon in April with my Niece to celebrate my 50th birthday and I can not wait.
A little expensive?? I’ve run the Wine and Dine and the Princess Half and I’m not sure if I’ll ever do another one because they keep raising the prices up every year. I will say this though, if you truly love Disney and running I think it’s worth running ONE race.
I ran the Wine and Dine when it started at 10pm and the after party was in Epcot until 4am. I loved that experience and the course was amazing, as you got to go through every park but Magic Kingdom. I wasn’t as thrilled with the Princess because you spend most of your time running outside of the parks so it wasn’t as fun for me.
I spent the week in the parks before the races, did the 5k, 10k, and half, and ran in full costume each day for the princess half. So essentially I did it the exact opposite way you recommend. It was quite fun
I’ll take my first two runs this Year in Paris (5 and 10 Kilometers) and damn… i cant wait!!!
Can someone be at the finish line without purchasing a chEAR package? I want my mom to be able to catch a glimpse but $70 seems expensive:(
I run princess and it’s a very early mornings for me. I don’t push the wait to the last min for the busses. I get on the first bus usually around 3:15am. Wat a great breakfast and take something with me since I will have two hours to let it settle…and then I do my usual race nutrition during.
Expect ANY weather. The 2020 marathon was ran under a heat advisory, and by the time the sun was out, it was upper 80’s and humid. If you’re in a later corral, most of your race will probably be in the sun.
Im imagining someone running in the full Queen Amidala costume and cracking up lol
Amazing video, thank you very much!!! I am just wondering, are 5k and 10k races only scheduled in January?
Im going to have a bot to buy all those tickets and then resell them for more since there is a demand for them
My son and I are running in our first rundisney 10k this Feb. Thanks for the tips. We are super excited.
i subscribed but totally am going to regret it lol this channel makes me want to go to Disney all the time! i dont have the funds tho sad face but i do love this channel so…ill subscribe lol
Totally disagree that you should plan your park days after the run event.
Walking several miles through the parks in advance is a great warm up to your big race. Whereas, you may be barely able to walk at all after your run.
Chear squad tickets? Man… disney thinks of every way they can get money from you.
This is on my bucket list. I really want to run a Disney race one day.
Use the bathrooms on the route in the parks, they are nicer, cleaner, and they aren’t port-a-pottys
I am in no way a fit person but I’ve run at Disneyland Paris for the past 2 years, doing the 5k both times and in 2018 I achieved my first 10k. For 2019 I’m sticking with the 5k & 10k but want to be even faster with my finish time. I never thought I would enjoy running but through Run Disney I’ve become closer with friends, made new friends and found an awesome group to motivate and support me for every step (RunDV!). My ultimate goal, to run a 1/2 marathon at WDW in 2021 and achieve the Castle to Chateau that year too.
Gosh someone’s got to live, breath, and eat Disney World and Disney Land 24-7 to obtain the amount of knowledge this girl has.
This is an awesome video on runDisney info. I have been to a handful of runDisney events and you hit all the important points. I will say, staying on property hotels is a must and make sure you double and triple check bus times for race morning great rule of thumb is allow yourself plenty of time (to get to the race, get through bag check, and get to your corral), as early as it sounds getting on the bus by 3:30 am is must with all the traffic and participants needing a seat from the resort.
She isn’t joking about the cold temps. I did the 5K and the marathon in 2015. At the start of the 5K is was in the 20’s with the wind chill.
thank God you put this together I’m running next year for Star Wars❤
If you do the Half Marathon at Disney Paris, you have to have a doctors certificate in order to be given your bib. It has to be uploaded about a month before to their portal in order for them to issue your bib so keep that in mind. Thankfully they do have a template that is in French and English that the doctor can just sign for you
My husband and I booked a trip for January not knowing that the marathon even existed and it’s happening the second half of our trip. I’m very nervous as I was trying to avoid crowds as much as you can at disney, and our plane tickets are non refundable. Can anyone tell me if this makes the parks a nightmare?
It’s not a little expensive, it’s A LOT expensive! I have run the marathon once at Disney World and completed a number of 5K and 10K races in both Florida and California. They are fun, the theming is fantastic, and the support (water/Powerade, cold sponges, Vaseline, etc.) is second-to-none. However, though my husband still loves to do runDisney races, I’m over it. The races are so crowded that it takes the fun out of it for me. I’m a slower runner, so I end up in one of the later corrals, and I end up expending so much extra energy trying to get around walkers and other slower runners that it’s difficult to settle into a comfortable pace and enjoy the race.
I have purchased the platinum ChEAR Squad package several times when my husband has run on marathon weekend (no Dopey, yet, but he’s done a few Goofy challenges), and it certainly does make race spectating a lot easier. Highly recommend!
I was just wondering just the River Of Lights show at Animal Kingdom have an merchandise stall????
My mom and I do the princess half every year! This is our bonding trip during the year.
I have a quick question, I just did the 10k. Will that be considered proof of time for the half marathon
We are arriving just before the Disney wine and dine half marathon
Can you enter from the uk? I’ve looked online and it only seems to allow USA or Canada? Thank you
Thx so much AJ!!! I’m doing the princess 1 mile on Saturday and this is actually really helpful and I’ve been watching you because I’m going and I’m glad u did this and I’m still watching you so when i try these things for the first time!!!!❤️❤️❤️❤️
My wife and I just ran the Princess 10k, it was our first 10k and our first run disney race. We don’t run but we love disney so we thought we would give it a try. The overall experience was a good 1, the only problem we had was with the walkers basically taking up the whole width of the course and not sticking to the right sideish. I mean not even close. We would do it again but not every year because of how expensive it is but again we both had an awesome time.
As well as Run Disney, for those on one of the Disney Cruise ships that visits Castaway Cay, you can do a 5k run at Castaway Cay and its completely free and you still get a medal (even if it is plastic).
The Star Wars races are the least popular as the races go and still have spots available even though the race is in 3 months. RunDisney is really trying to push advertisements and get more people to sign up for the half and the challenges. So if you want to sign up, you still have a chance!
Something I wish I would have known about was all of the vendors that were there. You’re able to pick anything you can think of running related from supplements, get kt taped to gear. It’s also worthwhile checking to see which restaurants have special discounts for those running, but to make sure you get reservations early enough to be in bed for the 3am alarm clock to be at the stage area at 4am. There’s also the photo areas with sets/characters in the staging area. Lastly bring gallon sized ziplock bags for icing after while laying in bed or on the pool, especially in between races if you’re doing a challenge. I have my coast to coast medals, kessel run and darkside challenge. Don’t plan on more than a pool day on race days because your legs will be toast. The hardest part of the races is terrain change going from flat roads to the overpasses and in the parks kill your quads.
Wow… I have to admit that I don’t care at all about this video… I usually care for all others even if I am not doing it or I am too late to do it… but this… blah… so didn’t even finish it. This is for a specialized fan lol… but thanks for the video I am sure many people will appreciate it.
My family & I have run a bunch of races. They are so much fun. My husband even rode one of the Mountains during the January full marathon once. This list is very helpful if you’re unfamiliar with a lot of it. I didn’t plan to run last year, but months after registration closed I checked again & it was available. It can happen. Of course it’ll probably be more expensive. Also, before the race a lot of people ditch their jackets. Disney does donate them, so you can use a throwaway one or any regular jacket & they don’t just get thrown away
If a race fills up before you have a chance to register, look into their official charity sponsors! There are many charities you can sign up to run for, and raise money for a good cause. These charities have a certain number of registration spots held for them, so even if a race is full, you can get in this way. They also usually have extra goodies for their runners, including race shirts/singlets, or even free running shoes, given directly from the charity. I signed up late, and did this for the 2018 wdw marathon, ran for RODS racing team.
No, do feel bad about throwing clothes away on the side of the race. Clothing donated to charity often still ends up in landfills in the US or developing countries.
Running a RunDisney race is on my bucket list, thanks for the unique and informative video!
Did we miss anything? What advice do you have for runners training for their first half marathon?
Best tip I can give: know which in-park bathrooms are on the race course! The restrooms in Tomorrow Land are so much better than the portable toilets in the backstage areas.
My fiancé and I are going to Disney the second week of January 2020 for our honeymoon. Does the run effect our experience? It’s our first time and want it to be the most magical!
hahaha i pr’ed for my slowest half time at the race because i kept stopping for photos!:P Also, in the theme parks the real flush toilet bathrooms are open so potty breaks are much cleaner there
AJ: “have a calm day the day before your race”
Me: but I’m running 13.1 miles the day before the full marathon….
#dopeychallange
The only sprinting I’m doing at Disney is to the churro cart.
You are such a great asset to RC, Ruairi! Your videos are incredibly motivating, fun, energetic and an enjoyment to watch! Really appreciate the work you are doing!
Excellent tips, thank you! I’m surprised you didn’t get more comments on this video. Great stuff, thank you.
hello AJ. if we are DVC members, how do we “link” the info so we can get the “early registration”? any idea when is the registration of Fand Wine happening? thanks
Consider purchasing the photopass. I happened to be an annual pass holder this year so it was included, but the mid-race “action” photos were some of my favorites of my entire trip. If you purchase the package, it does include any Disney photos taken by their photographers while in the park, special/character meals, and ride photos for everyone on your trip itinerary. Well worth it for us.
I like your new intro!! It’s informative, fun and well done!!! Not sure what “Let’s WIN Disney!” means. Having a great time and a successful trip to Disney? Beating the Mouse at his own game? Giveaway?
What a great topic! You are spot on about registering the minute the race registration opens, and if you are a west coaster be prepared for FL humidity to crush your soul. I have never found a way to train for humidity.
Does anyone know if the Races/registration can be transferred to somebody else after they’ve booked/registered?!… I’ve done previous race weekends & loved them… I really want to do the princess weekend next year but can’t plan that far ahead with flights (I live in Ireland) & time off etc.
I’d really appreciate any Help or Information you guys can offer!!!!
A fun thing with the races is getting to go through “backstage” areas of the parks (and you can take pictures unlike the tours). A big reason to get to the races early is so you have time to take pictures with the characters that are there, and also watch fun videos and listen to the DJ. It is fun but if you’re in the last corral it does get boring. Another thing to note is that there are “balloon ladies” who ensure that you keep a pace of no less than 16 minutes per mile. If you fall behind them you will have to exit the races. Overall they are fun and you feel so good once you get the race medal!
Bring extra earphones or plugs just encase… Keep your check in bag simple they still need to be reviewed by security and the security area can be bottle neck and you can be stressed out about getting to your corral on time.
What is with the “Let’s Win Disney?” It’s so corny and doesn’t even make sense
From someone who works every race I recommend one thing.
Because registration is So fast and So far in advance….a lot of people forget that they pre order merchandise. And after every marathon weekend up to half of the runners never pick up their items.
This breaks my heart, guys. Because these items can cost upwards of 100 -250 (if you are forgetting a Dooney. Which people do)
So even if you don’t remember if you hastily added on pre ordered items…be sure to check when you stop by the expo
Did rundisney for the first time in January and loved it. Such a nice flat course. My only wish is that people would put their phone way and just soak up the moment for themselves
My biggest tips are that if you are worried you’re going to get swept because you’re slow, don’t stop for photos. Also, on the contrary, if you don’t care about your finish time, stop to take photos.
I hate running but this had Disney and DFB involved so of course I’m going to watch it
And I’ll be there running in only a couple days! 19.3 here I come!!!
Does anyone know how far back Disney will place you to start if you clock 20 minute 5k’s?
I have to object somewhat with DFBGuide’s new motto, “Let’s win Disney”. I realize it’s mostly me, as the motto is catchy and does a great job of conveying your goal of helping your viewers get the most of their time there. But to my way of thinking, “win” implies competing. “Win” involves at least some struggle and makes it seem as though, if you don’t make the absolute most out of every minute there, you’ve “lost.” Hardly makes for a relaxing trip, right? I much prefer simply having a “comfortable agreement.” Considering that most of my vacations the last 3 years or so have been to Disney a World/Orlando (I’d cheat sometimes and visit Universal or Sea World, too) or to Las Vegas, I leave the losing to the contents of my wallet.
Keep uthe amazing work!
My advice to any first time RunDisney peeps is that you should try to give some sort of Proof of Time! I didn’t submit a Proof of Time and I was in the middle of the last corral, it took almost two hours for me to even be able to START the race haha. They don’t release many runners at one time, so if you get stuck in one of the last corrals then it can be hours before you get to begin.
This was just something I wish I had known before my first race, but even with the wait it was sooooo fun <3:)
please do more rundisney and virtual runs with disney…thanks
Good run down, just a few things I’d add. If you are walking or a slower runner, please don’t be afraid to participate! This is a great race for beginners and it may motivate you to get in shape and do even more racing in the future! And if you choose to do this as a beginner, please also be respectful of those who have been training hard by staying to the right so that runners can pass on the left.
Can friends watch without buying a chear ticket? I was there maybe ten years ago to cheer on a family member and there was nothing like that back then!
If anyone is really curious on the actual running portion of RunDisney please check out “RezRuns” on Youtube. He has full race breakdowns (everything from 5k’s to full marathons). He also has training videos. He puts in a lot of effort into his videos and deserves more followers.
My tip:
ABSOLUTELY DO NOT buy any of the expensive merch during run weekend!!!
Everything that was sold during Rundisney this year is currently in Cast Connections for 1/5th if the price.
The $90 running zip tops are currently $17, I picked one up just last week, all pins are $5, they have the mugs and lanyards and running costumes and sweatbands; everything!
They don’t have any of the third party merch, but pretty much everything else is there.
If you’re spending so much money on an entry ticket don’t spend the same amount on merch!
It showed up in cast connections about a week after the races so just pop in there.
My husband and daughter have accomplished three Dopey Challenges and earned Coast to Coast medals. They have LOVED the experiences.
My girlfriend and I came over from England solely for Princess Half Marathon last year and thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. Both of us wore our medals for the remainder of race day and also for a few days after, it was amazing seeing others doing the same and getting well done remarks from fellow runners. The best thing I found was the cast members would be extremely interested and congratulatory. I also second “RezRuns” for anyone interested in taking part in any Run Disney events, his channel is amazing!
I did the 2018 Dark side challenge and I might try going to a race every other year
1) virtual races you’re just buying a medal there is literally nothing more to it. I thought here would be some web content or something. There is not.
2) contrary to popular opinion real runners can potentially set a PR. But, you can try for a record anywhere for a lot less money, slow down for some photo ops and have fun, it’s Disney. I pushed hard on the 10k and felt like I was doing it wrong, had a lot more fun on the half.
3) save some money on one less park pass. next time I’ll plan for a day by the pool or at Disney springs after the big race. I Just wanted to ride soar’n to keep my feet off the ground after the half.
I have major respect for anyone who is doing running events… I just could not!! Hahaha
I am going to the run in Paris for the 3th year now. Hope to run in Florida one day. So I can do the Castle to Chateau Race. Maybe in 2020. But they have still a lot to learn in Paris. For example our merchandise is a joke when you compare it to WDW. And we do need a lot more charachters. But we do see changes every year.
Do not. I repeat, do NOT try gu for the first time during the race. You will find out what the port a potties look like….
Thank you for doing this video! Planning my 4th RunDisney event for Wine and Dine this year. Biggest advice, MAKE THE RUNDISNEY EVENT YOUR DISNEY VACATION! Its super expensive, even as a solo traveler. Research to see what charities or even travel agents will be supplying bids for your RunDisney weekend. Beats having to mad dash for registration online.
BE PREPARED FOR THE EXPO! On the first day it is a nightmare! Biggest advice for going to the expo on day one: BRING A BAG WITH YOU, example, an expandable backpack to put all the shirts, preorders and other items you will get at the expo. Follow the signs around you to get to where you need to be. If you are unsure about something while at the expo, PLEASE ASK SOMEONE! Even if its a random person you are in line with, you will be surprised how helpful they can be and might make a new friend.
Pinterest has tons of checklists to print out to keep you on track.
I don’t get your “Let’s WIN Disney” new intro. Is there a backstory or meaning for the acronym?
I have run the Marathon 4 times. This is really good information. Thanks. I am glad to hear that AJ is a runner.
I did the star wars 10K in 2018 and it was an amazing experience, I ended up getting 2nd in my age group and got a cool plaque. Definetly the most fun I’ve ever had in a race
I like to bring a space blanket to use before the race. It’s inexpensive, light weight, very warm, and easy to toss away when you’re ready to start the race.
Why would you run on vacation? You’re there to eat way more food then you should and regret it when you get home thereby forcing you to exercise at home. Exercising while at Disney just ruins the entire formula and confirms that the illuminati do indeed exist.
I am a Disney Cast Member At ESPN Wide World of Sports in Merchandise and I’m surprised that you didn’t talk about the merchandise Commemorative option! You can pre order some items from the race (magnets, pins, the race hoody, etc), without having to worry about it selling out, and you can just come pick it up whenever you are ready! The magnets and pins can go very fast for some races, and it’s a very smart thing to do if you are a collector of any of those items! Love your channel!
So funny that you guys posted this today because I just asked my husband earlier if we can do an event next year for a parent getaway!
Getting ready for the Star Wars half in April. This video has perfect timing!!
