5 THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE JOINING THE GYM

What to Look for in a Gym Location — This is the single most important element in your decision. A gym can have every bell and whistle in the world, but if it’s too far away, there’s a good chance you won’t go. Make sure the gym is either close to your house and/or job. Here are a few things—besides monthly fees—to consider when joining a gym.
Location, Location, Location! A gym that’s close to work or home is obviously more convenient, but that convenience can be vital to your experience.A gym membership doesn’t do much good if you can’t actually use it!
That’s why one of the most important things to look for when joining a gym is on-site childcare. VillaSport offers up members’s children (ages 6 months to 12 years) up to 2 hours a day complementary time at their VillaKids facilities.First of the 6 things to look for while joining a gym is the cost or membership price. Majority of fitness clubs or gyms are likely to charge a monthly fee for membership, so it’s essential that one chooses a fitness club that fits his budget.
The next big thing you are should consider is the cost of a membership. Gym memberships can vary in cost depending on what type of plan you go on (length of term, type of usage – student or otherwise). If you can, decide on a set amount of money you are willing to spend on a gym membership before hand.Of course, signing up for a gym membership has its benefits and provides you with extra drive and motivation to improve fitness and health. However, amidst all the excitement of signing a new gym membership and starting your fitness journey, you should consider some things before you sign.
What you’ll find in most of the Indian gyms is a big fat guy who once got muscular on pathetic steroid cycles doubled up as a so-called “coach”. That’s exactly something you should avoid. Rather, look for a gym that has certified trainers holding years of experience and steroid-free transformations right under their belt.
Choosing a gym With so many gyms to choose from, it’s important to pick one that’s going to best suit you. Things to consider when looking at gyms are the facilities that each gym has to offer. For example, some have pools whereas others provide a variety of exercise classes.
H ere’s what to look for when joining a gym. Equipment Most gyms take you on a tour before you agree to purchase a membership. That’s why it’s imperative that you know what your gym goals are before heading to a new gym; you’re going to need to ensure that they have all the right equipment.Whether you are a regular gym goer who is looking for a change or someone who is about to kick-start on your fitness regime, you need to check the quality and range of equipment, the gym offers. Every individual is different so is his/her fitness goals, so check out range of equipment which are required to meet you requirements.
When you sign up for a gym membership, they say that it is almost the same as getting married. It is because you are not only financially bound to that West Hollywood gym of your choice, but, you are also investing your time with your gym. But, not like your spouse, a gym is not [ ].So, you’ve decided to join a gym or fitness center. Good for you!
A lot of people do that at the beginning of the year. Unfortunately, many drop out after just a few months. Start by visiting a.
Pop into the gym around the time that you normally like to get your sweat on, he says. Look around to see how full classes are and how occupied the equipment and weight rooms are. If.
A new year often means a new gym. Whether you’re joining one for the first time or switching gyms because your membership is up, it’s smart to.If your gym is all the way across town, you may end up less likely to use it.
Consider a location on the way to or from work. If you have to pass by the gym twice a day, you’re much more likely to stop in. Might be worth springing more for a convenient location for your day-to-day.

A personal trainer can be handy for beginners… because it saves time some people haven’t got the time to figure everything out!
I always wondered if the background was a green screen. Finally answered that.
The school I’m at now does lots of takedowns. It’s often 20 minutes of every hour long class. I have a lot of fun when I’m on the ground, and I go back for that ground work. But I’m 40+ and those takedowns are really hard for me to roll with and walk away from. Last class I had to lie on the ground for 5 minutes after the last take down and literally hobble out of class at the end.
I’ve thought about looking for another place that focuses a lot more on the ground work. Where I’ll get smashed but not slammed. However, I’m a little worried that asking a new place about takedowns is going to get met with scorn. If I’m like “Do you guys do a lot of takedown work? Because that hurts too much.” I’m afraid the instructor will be like “Zip it, wimp. Getting slammed into the ground is what it’s about. Why do you want to be weak?”
Any thoughts on how to ask a question like that without turning it into a touchpoint for the instructor to just tell me I need to man up and deal with it?
Have someone to go with. I’ll feel more at ease with someone I know
I will first check the equipments and how the people and staff are and if there is music and an Ac before signing up
Would you say running is vital in training for boxing/mma? I absolutely hate running. I could tolerate just about any other cardio but running…
She is so pretty. Oh my God. I couldn’t stop staring at her eyes.
Can you tell me if this is a legit gym
http://grapplingzone.com/
I live in clawson Michigan and there is a bjj school in town. Their website is tenthplanetroyaloak.com. Any thoughts on the authenticity of this school?
I’ve never joined a gym before and I’ve been planning to join one once I start studying. Thank you for being that video I needed to watch on YouTube in order to feel reassured that I’m going to totally be a badass. Thanks for the confidence boost, I really needed it. Just subscribed. Keep up the great work.
Before joining a gym, do 100 push-ups, 100 sit-ups, 100 squat, 10km run/jog you can lower this to your lvl and this guys stretching. Also banana don’t turn on you heater or AC. Yeahhhhhhhhhhh………..
Just go watch this guys vids or some other vids by by.
Now this is a guy that i respect, the kind who doesn’t talk trash about other martial arts and actually give legitimate tips on fighting and working out
I wore my shoes on the mat first time i entered the gym i wish i had of seen this vid before then
I start my first class tomorrow morning i’m nervous asf but not really because i wrestled in highscool so i guess i’m experienced lol
I’m glad I’m subscribed to your channel. c: I’m a Gamer but I have a HUGE fascination for MMA, the MMA workouts, and watching MMA fight videos.
I take some MMA workout tips into my 2 hour Exercises daily to stay healthy and fit because as a Gamer I don’t get much activity because I sit and Game all day. I’m glad you have this video that I can abide by to stay MMA fit. c:
The 2 mile run, Jump roping, Reaching Past Toes are a struggle for me but I’m sure I can work on those. c:
The Push ups, Squats, Sit-ups, 100° split, Touch Fingers Behind Back, and Shadow Boxing are everything I can do easily since I’ve already added those to my 2 hour Exercises from before.
Except I’ve never done any grappling exercises before.
Do you think its possible to be a Gamer/Mix Martial Artist? \(^o^)/
We have a small gym, but it has a really good sense of community. My training partners are my family.
Try old style kung fu classes which are basically extinct…….
In Canada there are like 3 in Toronto and a few in Vancouver. First one ever started there. So many RULES. The alter. The actual training area must be bowed to before stepping on…alot of mma gyms have the occasional guy bow every time he enters or leaves the matts while everyone else just walks back and forth on them, those guys have old style asian training in an asian martial art.
The shirts make em look so skinny while they are all in good shape
The eating and water part got me on my first class. Ate about half an hour before the training started (like, full dinner and desert and everything), already cramped up during the warming up run. Was on the edge of throwing up at the end of sparring:’) Definately learned from that one:)
strength and endurance training are my jam (still training for flexibility yikes), but I’ve never tried jump ropes in my 16 years of existence LMAO.
Training about a month now at a friends school for super cheap, because of debt I need to clear. Class starts off with some techniques. Not much attention to detail, kind of feels rushed and random with no logical progression. Then we go at it. I’ve certainly been getting more comfortable with wrestling/ grappling but the attention to technique, the how and why seems to be lacking. The instructor trains fighters at another location and seems kind of bored here, small group of regular guys. I’ve learned more at a couple of free trials then the month I’ve been here and Injuries are accumulating faster than I’m learning, but I don’t want to quit. I just can’t afford to train anywhere else at the moment.
Before joining an MMA gym u only need to know one thing. First time you’re gonna leave your soul in there
My avg pace per mile is 9 min and 5 sec per mile i gotta work hard
Thank you for these video shane,i train muay thai and these videos are very helpful for me. I’ve earned alot from you.
amazing video but I’m literally trying to find motivation to go♀️ ah I signed up yesterday, took a tour.. I have no clue what to do or how to do machines so I was planning on just starting with cardio machines.. literally only thing I’m experienced with haha but anywho I hope I get the hang of it And this weird social anxiety thing about going to the gym is weird like is this normal for first time gym goerslol I signed up honestly just to do it, now I just need to do it❕
Thank you, it wasn’t useful at all and I’m not gonna subscribe.
Not sure where I can ask this but I want to learn BJJ for both fitness and self defence and for my self
Confidence. I’ve lost my confidence. I’m willing to commit 3-4 times a week. I’m so bored of just going to the gym and just lifting weights and going home. I’ve got no experience in martial arts, I’m worried I’m going to get into the wrong type of BJJ, is there a certain style of BJJ I should be learning?
I’m almost 70. A total clutz. Fat and out of shape with half the lung capacity form somebody my age due to copd. But I want to do this. I’m ready to take some good advice and a bucket of shit from those incapable of good advice.
mine: kettlebell accident, nuff said, no more info needed and you can gather what happened… I am male by the way
I have a Team Tooke and a Gracie Barra gym near me. Idk which to pick.
This wee man gets on my nerves peddling his naff courses Jump Squats 50 Push Ups 50 under Table Heaves 50 however double these numbers for serious competiton.
So I went to the gym for the first time ever last week. I think you missed one major elementary tip possible. Warm up!
I joined a Synergy class with my Mother purposefully because we know literally nothing and need instruction, not even the ‘why’ of some of the exercises. The instructor didn’t believe we had never been before. Took another 10 minutes of us standing around like a bad smell for him to realise that we were telling the truth. We thought there would of been some kind of warm up instruction like a ‘the class has formally started now and now we are going to stretch’. Nope. We were expected to know to jump on a machine and warm up before class started. Who would of thought we were mind readers haha.
Suffice to say we did have fun and we will be going back next week (hopefully still not sore by then.. its been 3 days haha)
Hey Shane What if I Dont jump rope? I Still am Great At Sparring Though. I Last and am still fairly new
5. No shoes on the mat
4. Cut your nails
3. Introduce yourself
2. Make sure you have the proper clothing
1. Don’t eat a big meal before class
Now give me my like
If you want to learn how to build your business… hands down, I recommend Stu at http://www.TheSixFigureTrainer.com. I took his e-class and he is the real deal. It’s some of the best information I’ve gotten on marketing, lead generating, how to approach new clients and how to keep clients so you don’t have a lot of turnover. He talks about getting started as a trainer at ground zero too and it would have been really helpful if I was just starting out.
Stu also has a lot of free articles that are extremely (like extremely extremely) helpful… but I would do his e-class if he still offers it.
I have a question, can someone who isn’t as big as their opponent still have a chance at winning? Whether it be a difference in muscle or just size in general.
Wash your mouth literal my sparring parner at just ate onion tacos and almost makes me puke during grappling
Hi, i’m 40+ and i wonder if grappling would harm my joints and tendons etc. as a newcomer?
Pls if u want to self defend do box or mma or kickboxing. Karate, kung fu, krav maga are not good. Maybe krav maga but you need a good gym. Karate, Kung fu aren’t good. You need to stay there a lot of year for starting to do something. With box or kick box you prepared in 5 months
I appreciate this guys honesty and straightforwardness. I’m so glad I subscribed to his channel!
The female times seem a bit too slow, plenty of women can easilly get sub 15 2 mile times.
I’ve never practiced bjj but love this channel! there’s abudabi world champions male and female in a school by me with 100 students, and there is also a small class with no champions and a brown belt intructor but I’ve here’d it’s a really friendly class with a good vibe what class would I be best going to does it matter if the teachers a black belt I know he’s working towards it, and will I get better faster in the class with 2 world champions and black belt teaching?
Also, if you have any type of fungus, rash, skin condition or injury either cover it or be curteous and let people you partner up with know to avoid health and hygeine issues. Please wash your feet before heading to your dojo. (actually, I would go as far to just say shower before and after dojo training).
Squats should be at least double push ups. Something wrong here. Should be between 70 to 100 for a MMA fighter minimum.
We had a sparring once, after the first round, my opponent drank so many water that when the 2nd round started ans I kicked his stomach, he puked… at me…
dude I’ve been training 2 years and I can still barely pass this stuff:D
what I absolutely hate is when other new students laugh at everyone even when they only make one tiny mistake! It’s annoying that they will make fun of someone for falling while doing a high kick while they can’t even get their legs even close to where the pad is. Also, when the sensei/senpai says for the newbies to do something else just don’t copy what the advanced people are doing. now then no hating it just giving friendly advice and thank you for reading this.
I am happy as hell as I get to goto the gym I could not afford it before but my new insurance gives me free membership to a gym and since I have one right buy my house they will pay for it they also sed since its only open so many hours a day that they would pay for that gym to use when open and a membership to the 24 hour gym 15 min away a long with send me a yoga kit for at home. so happy.
I can do 100 squats, but barely manage to do 30 push-ups. Guess which martial art I’m training in.
I’ve been looking into a gym near me. There are only a few
Could you tell me if you think this one is legit? https://tigerrockma.com
It’s mainly a tai kwando gym but they are also gracie certified.
Flexibility is the oddest thing. I’ve been training martial arts on regular basis (4-5 times a week) since I was 6 but I cannot stretch for shit. After I put way more emphasis on it for the past 3yrs I noticed some slight improvement but it’s still subpar…But as long as it does not hinder my performance I am okay with it.
I saw a Thai boxer training in the gym I use in Bangkok… the guy made the damn brick wall shake on the uppercut bag.
Fair to say he was fit like a boss.
How would i go about improving on the flexibility excercises?
Damn, my jump rope skills are better than “best” no mess ups in a 3 min round
What about pull ups? I pride myself on my amount of pull ups.
They really need to change the way they do things in the physical fitness world how are you going to be a personal trainer if you look like the people that need the personal trainer lol
jesus christ there is at least a mile between my fingers when i try to touch them behind my back. i have knowledge with shadowboxing and basic fighting concepts though. Also it feels like the metal bar on my clavicle impedes some of my range of motion, specifically with that touching of fingers.
All these personal trainers dont have muscular bodies how comes they been in gym this long
My first MMA fight is tomorrow and I am not confident at all so wish me luck
Got 16:07 for the 2mile run. First time I’ve ran in years, hopefully crack the 13s by the end of the year.
Fact: Just because you can’t pass these tests doesn’t mean you can’t beat someone that can.
half hour seems too little.I know when i had soccer they told us at least 2 hours beforehand if you re going to eat a proper meal with meat or just alot in general
So, if you are exercising hard 6 days a week but stay at 150, are you getting leaner?
I’m 11 Ive done moay thai for 3 months and my teachers are impressed with me so id like to thank you shane:)
Can absolutely obliterate the strength standards, the cardio standards on the other hand, not so much. I guess that’s what happens when you stop doing martial arts and only train powerlifting for 2 years.
Shane how did you work on balance when kicking and when fighting in like a judo tournament?
Maybe do a video on scapula retraction for people new to the bench press, or any exercise for that manner. I see ALOT of new people not doing that! Great videos keep it up
I’m pretty fat and get my ass kicked all day at the gym. It’s the best.
Boy I better not have to cut my nails off! I’m doing taekwondo classes in 2 weeks
Saying “Hello” is kinda hard for me since im a minor training with adults (im 6”3 and weigh 185lbs) and i got social anxiety. But i got a steady trainingspartner
I have terrible flexibility but I would like to join a gym. I was told the older you are the harder it is to start to become flexible. is this true? I’m 26 y/o male
If you change the running to biking how many miles should you do in what time
Can confirm not to eat before hand, first time I ever did Judo has food ten mins before. Sick after 10 mins of being thrown
Eh, I don’t believe this. The gym I go to didn’t mind that I was completely out of shape when I started a little over a year ago, I was 260 ish. Because I said “should I do some workouts at my house before joining” and the owner looked right at me kind of serious, yet friendly and said “why do workouts to get in shape before coming to a place where you’re going to get in shape, just jump into it man. No shame in weight, we don’t judge, just do your best”. I started the next day, no one judged or laughed at me. Here I am a year and ehh 3 months later, down to 165 eating a TON better and only drinking water, working out on my own, jogging and gym(muay thai, bjj, and boxing, weights). Just by jumping straight into it. So on this subject, I disagree with you Shane, no offense. Anyone overweight wanting to join any sort of gym, I say go for it and I’m more than happy for you to tell me how it goes! Good luck everyone starting their new journeys, and those that are furthering theirs!
I am 0 for 2 with BJJ gyms thusfar…I liked the last one, the instructor was certified but the blue belts up were standoffish, the other whitebelts I trained with lacked fundamentals (this chick during choking drills was ramming her forearm in my throat christsakes) and rolling it was all about the win….trying another gym next week…. hopefully the 3rd gym will be a charm. They offer fundamentals class before the adult classes first….makes sense we will see
I was drinking a lot of water by the end of the class. it helped me wet my mouth and it almost felt like it gave me some extra oxygen. I felt like I was about to die, then I drank about 1dl and I was all good. I drank like 1 liter of water during class and I felt amazing even when we were grappling and practicing ground and pound and standup attacks that need full body movement
Holy shit, watching this before my first MMA lesson and my name is actually Shane!
Use the bathroom before class, im in a hapkido kids class (11, half yellow belt) and i once peed myself after laughing so hard because we did a obstical course i knocked over some herdles
Rule 1 there has to be a wrestling class.
I was fucked out of luck; every fucking MMA/BJJ gym I was in didn’t have a wrestling class
Thanks for the tips! I’m joining my first martial arts gym next summer
I’d say it depends on your weight class. A welterweight needs to be more agile than a heavyweight while a heavyweight must have more strength than a welterweight.
But that test is pretty good, even though my running endurance sucks while I can punch for what feels like hours
My problem is that I can’t force myself to file my nails. It’s one of these sounds and feelings that just makes me feel like I’m being tortured:/
Great content as always!
In finding the right school for someone with no knowledge of jiu jitsu, would you recommend that the school has a curriculum similar to Gracie University, where they focus on the 36 core positions? I came across an affiliate of Gracie University, as well as a Relson Gracie Academy, and they only have a fundamentals course. However, I am not sure if that is as step-by-step like the Gracie University gym.
I appreciate your response.
“5 things that should practically be common sense when joining a MMA gym.”
Was a wrestler. Worked as a coach. Started bjj in may but had to take a few months off for work. Glad to be back. I feel like I’m worse then I was when I left.
I was doing no gi and I got my foot stuck in the sleeve it wa funny
Starting out with a split routine is an advanced training principle… it’s not for beginners… beginners are doing pre-contest Advance cutting routines… ever see someone do a rope pressdown… and a V handle low pulley row?
Yesterday was my 5th BJJ class. I am training at my local Gracie Barra gym. Your videos really help me out because this is my first time in any sort of combat sport. You have showed me that it is okay that I am being thrown around and submitted every time, it’s part of the learning process. I have been focusing more on defending than learning to submit, baby steps. Thank you and please keep uploading them.
My gym be like: my gym rents 2 rooms in a schoolbuilding, and u gotta walk like 10m from the dressing room to the mat. everyone just walks bare foot through a hall where little kids ran with dirt on their shoes and all just 2h ago
Gross right
No alcohol use no tobacco use no drug use and no cheap wrestling moves quote on quote no masturbating to other girls.
What i should do to start a marrial art school all by myself… especially muay thai
Is there a time limit for the calisthenics? One minute? Two minutes?
Forgot to use my real name. Now everyone calls me Shane and it’s way too late to say anything. It’ll just be weird.
Just started a week ago. All physical distancing and can train in the academy but not with a partner. Way I look at it, I’m trying to get the fitness and flexibility down and when I can spar hopefully I’m in a good place to begin!
I can only touch my fingers when my left arm is on the bottom. Not the other way around. Is there something wrong with my right shoulder? There is no pain. But there is limited mobility.
Guys someone help me, so there’s MMA fight team at my gym and I wanna join it and be a fighter, they allow amateurs and pros, and I’m a begginer, do you think they’ll let me join?
the sole reason i wear shoes is to keep the smell in.
i always have garlic baked beens 1 hour before class.
i say hello, just befofe a throw-goodbye as they sail past my shoulder.
rear choke defence-refer to garlic baked beans.
sardines and onikns or puckled mudfish(gag gag) work for front choke
Only a very few people can do over 55 strict push ups in a row. I’m in quite a good shape, but I don’t think I could crank out that many after I’ve seen Calisthenicmovement’s video on “the perfect push-up”. Cleaning up the form made them significantly harder for me.
just got instructions from Unflexal and I’m ready for the my training:D
So I’m in the US Army, and I want to learn how to fight. I never grew up fighting, and I’m in a unit that doesn’t have to fight. I don’t want to fight, but the way the world is going, and the possibility of being deployed and needing to know how to protect myself as my future family is a must. Is going to an MMA gym the right choice?
I have to disagree with the shower before class, such a waste of time washing yourself before doing exercise and getting sweating and then of course showering again right after
Found this video very helpful. I’m relocating to Pacific Palisades CA.
There’s a Gracie West LA, Gracie Beverly Hills, and 10th Planet West. LA all within a 9 to 12 mile distance from me. And Paragon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu about 20 miles west of me. There are others but those are the names that keep popping up im my location.
One of the factors for me is distance. Every mile traveled in LA is no joke. So just want to make sure time is maximized for the place that is the right fit for me.
Hey shane, i have a little problem, i can do very hard exercises, i can do pullups with weights, muscle-ups one leg squats and other of the hardest calistenics exercise but when it comes to cardio i’m very crap, i train like 7 times per week, 3 conditioning exercises and 4 martial arts training(pretty challenging on cardio). but i still struggle a lot with cardio, this summer i trained 5-6 days a week and after every training i ran 1km in a very bad time(like a little under 5 minutes) and i gased out, never could ran more than 1 km. I mention im 21y old and i have a decent diet(a lot of proteins, low carbs, no junk food or soda etc.). Any ideea why?
does anyone know if there is a time limit for the push-up and sit-ups? I’m guessing it’s a one minute test but I’m not sure
I Iive In Miami chewy and I’m trying to join bjj and there’s a Gracie barra gym near me what r ur thoughts.thank you
You missed a huge one: do not sign any papers until you seriously know thats who you want to train under. Theres so many gyms that are competition focused and have their golden boys and their politics and the people who cant spar but want to murder you everytime youre drilling or sparring.
Thats just a little of what ive gained through shitty gyms and coaches. God bless
I wanna join Taekwondo so I’ve been binge watching a bunch of these videos ;D
Look to see who the bullies are cos there are bullies. Even the instructor him or herself. Dont let older or more experienced members or members whove been going a long time use that to take advantage of you and cause you an injury. dont get back swept on an oak floor train at a place with cushioned ground.
If youre instructor has something to prove, or is racist, or doesnt help you at all or laughs at you or makes jokes at youre expense allot,,,,get outta there.
Any of you guys seen the 90s movie Sidekicks?
“Hey, you! We don’t wear shoes on the mat here, MISTER!”
Does anyone train in New York City? I’m trying to decide between the Marcelo Garcia Academy or the Renzo Gracie Academy.
I’ve only got one gym to choose from where I’m at, but I love it
New subscriber! I’ve been watching mma for over 12 years and I’ve recently been extremely interested inBJJ. Even to the point where I watch a few competitions occasionally, i trained in karate from the age of 10 to 20 without.a break 3-4x a week and i just love the environment of a martial arts class. I live in cbus and want to visit Matt Browns gym in 2019 and start learning some bjj and muay thai! I’ve been watching ur videos over the months and great stuff! Thanks for the sound advice
Once i got kicked from a judo competition because of big fingernails, it was the final and i was almost sure i was gonna win, i fought 4 times b4 the final, and the nails werent big, 1 or 2 but not all
It was a slip on my hygiene
THIS VIDEO IS HORRIBLE…… THESE TRAINERS ALL LOOK LIKE THEY’VE NEVER LIFTED A DAM DUMBBELL EVER!!!
Lol why should you file you’re nails i have acrylics and doing gymnastics 3 times a week hahahahah
The teacher: Hey you! No shoe on the mat
Me: Excuse me, I’m wearing heels
The teacher: no more heels
Tomorrow
The teacher: Hey you, no heel on the mat
Me: This is flip flops
Point 2 is very true…When I was training someone kicked me and cut my arm…it wasn’t bad but it was bleeding!
a loved the part of before your oponents find about us first
I’m not that flexible because for my scoliosis but I wanna get into MMA
keep up the good work Shane! your videos are inspirational and very well rounded to fit the viewers position or personal preference. I’m hoping to one day be able to coach similar.
I want to join gym to meet friends, but I feel insecure going without friends.. sad cycle
What you mentioned about the “black belts” teaching BJJ was my exact experience starting out. A dude in my area is an 8th degree black belt in karate, but runs a Jiu Jitsu school. On his website he talks pretty much solely about BJJ, not karate, and flaunts his 8th degree black belt. It seemed like a decent gym and I was inexperienced when I started so I signed the 6 month contract, then come to find out that he’s only a purple belt in BJJ and he’s also a really shady businessman. False advertising is a bitch and so was he lol
I was thinking about joining a Jiu-Jitsu dojo in the Missouri area. It’s website is gbwashington.com. Thanks for listening.
The instructor at the first gym I joined was like “Hey, I’ll waive your enrollment fee if you buy this $120 gi from me since I have a special account that gets me good prices”. I was like wtf? I posted on a bjj forum about it and people were like gtfo. Glad I did. I’m at a gym now where the focus is always on technique and not killing yourself. I’m enjoying it so far.
Hey bro, i really like your videos! i want to ask you a question but before here’s the situation, I am 34 years old, i practice amateur boxing for about 8 years from 12 to 20 years old, then i did just sparring with some freestyle wrestling added to boxing with my friends who were wrestlers, and for the last 4 years i just train, run, heavy bag and do some weights i have a little experience with freestyle wrestling but its just on beginner level.
So my question is: is it too late to start bjj for self defense or should i go to an mma gym instead where my boxing will help? although i would like bjj more than mma because of grappling… it seems hard and i kinda wanna try it!
i enjoy your channel a lot! Respect!
The last tip is so true, especially if the food is spicy.
Eh, as someone who attended a belt factory, I’d say that going from an environment where you spend months “training” and know nothing more about fighting than when you first got there to an environment where you leave your first session more knowledgeable about fighting than when you walked in is pretty refreshing. Likewise, leaving unhappy environments really takes a load off of you. There are those martial arts cults, but that’s a cult problem, not a problem with some kind of law of primacy.
bossierjiujitsu.com in Shreveport, LA? They look good to me but what do I know? I am a old-time TKD guy.

If you want to build you need to eat something before you get there. You cant joy gym with empty stomach lol
I got 2 gyms in town. Both will not pick up my calls nor answer my emails. I would love to join but with this I wouldn’t. I’ve tried showing up for a class but got told no I had to sign up and pay online 1st. Beyond frustrating
I fcking did it, bro, I started yesterday it is the best thing ever
Interested in starting BJJ as a 37 y.o. and have a nearby Gracie gym but it’s run by purple and blue belts. Would it be a bad idea to start there? There are other gyms in my city but they are a good drive away.
I will never forget the fifth advice I went to a full body workout class and my dumbass ate sushi one hour before the class NEVER AGAIN.
Hi bro thank you I am big fan of you bro were is your fighting acadami pls tell me
It’s better to start out in a home gym… you should start out with basic exercises anyway… a lot of guys start out in a garage gym… and when they joined a gym they think they’re still working out in the garage… the way they lay everything around that misplace everything!
this helped me as a fighter lol i am an over achevier who wouldn’t be for TAM it’s TAM have to be ready for the next level. love mma love wrestling. love staying in shape. ice bath ppl
I been to a gym in my area. I was brand-new starting fresh. I might have had only one month experience 3 years prior at a different place. I paid for the three-month contract. Everything was going great I loved it. Then one day I was paired with a guy that probably outweighed me by 40 lb, 5in taller, and has been doing that for four years. One min into the role he flattened my legs out while I was in the mount. He rolled one way I went the other way and then my tendon in my knee popped. while i was on the floor and in excruciating pain I startedto take off the GI and the instructor came by and yelled at me to put the GI back on. I couldn’t walk on the knee for 3 weeks. I haven’t been back in the gym since and it’s been a little over a year. Is this kind of common behaviorr for a gym or did I just picked the wrong?
I’m a self training fighter I want to test my skills but I also don’t like unwanted fights what should I do just help me plz
Thank you so much for this useless video literally but i appreciate it.

Glad I found your channel man… I just joined a new gym and I am starting to wish I looked a little more before committing… my fiancé also joined and it’s one of these multiple martial arts/weight training places so at first I was happy about being able to do some striking and BJJ… now I’ve been really into BJJ and I’ve leaned away from wanting to do anything else because I only have 3-4 days a week I can do BJJ… anyway my issue is the classes vary from purple belts to me who has only taken 2 classes I’ve learned a couple moves but I don’t know step one to even start… I know it’s like that for everyone who starts but what I’m feeling right now is that the one on one tips aren’t there yet. I rolled with some good white belts and a purple belt my second day and got smashed of course. I asked many questions and the other guys have been helpful but I feel like maybe it’s hard for the trainer who grew up doing BJJ and is a black belt and well accomplished for him to focus on me with 0 skill and also his white belts and purple belts etc… I just don’t want to hold people back but also I wang to learn what is and isn’t correct at least the most basic of things… I’ll prob finish out my contact with the gym because of $$$ and then maybe look if I feel this way in a years time… I feel like I’ve learned some already which is great but also feel I could learn more under a more beginner based class… idk maybe jumping the gun maybe rolling my second day against everyone there that day was to see what I can and cannot do before the ground steps are put in place I’m not sure yet.. the other students have been there for years and that shows me something that they are still there so I’ll ride it out especially if I’m learning at least something each time. I do agree Chewy look around before committing in hoping my choice wasn’t a bad decision… we shall see I still love going I just want to learn and be taught by someone I feel wants me to learn as much as I do myself… I know it’s way early but listening to you and some other people I respect I feel like i May be in the deep end until I just figure it out and with 0 and I mean 0 knowledge I’d rather it not be that way until it just clicks because it could be lots of time wasted or learning improper technique…. I go again tonight I guess only time will truly tell.. one thing I do not doubt my instructors skill as a BJJ competitor or practitioner more so if everyone can be taught equally being at such varying degrees of skill and knowledge
I wanna join a boxing gym but I feel intimidated and I feel like my parents might disapprove
I can touch my left and and right arm when my right hand is behind my back an my left hand is going over my body but not vice versa. How do I make my left arm more flexible?
Never really tried to jump rope before, Usually replace it with a hybrid plyo squat thrust burpee for maximum leg activation with ballistic movement. Great for takedown shots.
Anyhoo, jumping rope was never something I figured out as a child. Jumping rope is right up there with learning how to swim, and to dispose of the weight of guilt. Lol. So I will definitely give jumping rope a try! Its good to learn new things
1st thing you should tell everyone is that they should not join a gym. 2nd thing you should tell everyone that being overweight is good for them. 3) Being couch potato will improve your life and will extend it. 4) Eating junk food is good for you 5) Smoking is good for you and running is bad for you.
Hey man! Love your videos! Barely got into kick boxing and I enjoy it! Can you happen to make a video on some basic training drills on a bag with combos that works on the basic jab, cross, and kicks so beginners like me can work on?
i wash my gi once a week
my hand nails are long
i don’t say hello untill someone says it to me
i like to take coffee with anything sweet before my training
i secretly fart as much as i could during warmups
i go to the bathroom as an excuse to rest or hide my boner
i don’t like to take a shower after training
I want to improve myself, grow my skills to the max possible, and be a complete martial artist. There are a couple of bjj gyms near me, but that’s not my question. My question is, how much can bjj cost?
I have been living in different countries/places in the past 20 years, so I’ve attended in many different clubs of various martial art. Half of the clubs that I went to didn’t have the great culture/atmosphere, which is something matters to me. Now I have to find a BJJ club in the city I just moved to. It’s gonna be my first time joining a BJJ club, hope the coaches and students there are nice. After trying for a month, if I don’t like it and switch club, would they think I am a traitor? What does loyalty mean in BJJ culture?
the only one i don’t score best on is the mile and jump rope and in that case i scored okay
I done these exercises and after i was able to defeat a whole gym full of MMA dudes
I just found your page. I enjoy how the advice you give on vids like these also relates to life in general. Keep up the amazing work.
Thank you for posting this the same day i joined my local gym, great timing bruh!
I have done boxing, but I want to give mma a try, learn new stuff lol
I am in the deep end of the pool of life. Stuck in a rut. Can or how can rolling help? Lost, mike
I thought this was a Dane Cook impersonation. I thought he was gonna tell me amusing anecdotes about working at Burger King and how many keys he has….
They really need to change the way they do things in the physical fitness world how are you going to be a personal trainer if you look like the people that need the personal trainer lol
When the green screen was a lie the whole time. Mind = Blown
What do you think about the Gracie Combatives gym in Phoenixville, PA? They got a solid curriculum: https://graciejiujitsuphoenixville.com/gracie-combatives
Started BJJ mid January, best decision of my life. The gym I go to is really great, we normally start with a warm up then they show us 2 or 3 different moves and we drill them for a couple of minutes, then we roll to showcase what we learned
The only thing i don’t like about BJJ and MMA gyms is that they are so expensive. This is not a question of whether or not they’re worth the price. That is nit my point. But if you don’t have $150 per month to spare you arw out of luck.
for me, i think, in this order: cost, location, teachers, students.
My flexibililty sucks. I hate it, my friends are more flexible but I always stretch more and ought to handle the pain.
Thanks man for all the tips and advice. I am a beginner and your videos helped me a lot.
I have a question, how come I don’t really take in the moves that we drill, but when I get tapped and people explain to me how to prevent the tap I learn it instantly. Also love your vids
Amen a lot of jiu jitsu gyms have a free trial free month she should take the free month I hope your gym looks like heaven keep up the great I’m in a third world country and will only have a gym like that in our dreams keep up the great work awesome videos thank you
Can you do a shoulder flexibility video if you don’t already have one?
I injured my right shoulder a while back and lost all flexibility to it, it seems.
I’m unsure which movment(s) I should be focusing on when considering MMA training.
What’s the best way to send Chewy a question? I hope to begin BJJ soon and there is only 1 gym within an hour of me that teaches BJJ but it is an MMA gym so I am not sure how legit it is.
Awesome videos brotha! I reference your videos often. I just started my Jiujitsu journey and your videos have really helped. Thanks for putting out awesome content
i joined the gym without being able to do a proper push up or skip properly and i definitely wasn’t that flexible but i joined a gym anyway and could do these easily within a month or two, don’t be put off if you can’t do these when you start. Especially if you go to your first few sessions with a friend.
Does 2hrs count for the 2 mile run? (seriously unfit and old).
Geez dude! I never knew this bjj gym also had this entire gym within a gym!!!!! Dude! You need to flex this feature more!!!!
Does a gym with the Gracie name automatically make it legit?
Love ya Chewy! I live in MOntreal. Ive never trained. Was thinking about Tristar but Im hesitating because they train so many killers. Should I go somewhere else to learn basics first? Or is it better to be a noob with arguably the best in the area?
Another rule is to try to say the numbers in the language that ur martial art is from
Example: Taekwondo /Korean
Judo or karate/ Japan
Muay Thai /Thailand and etc because it shows your master that u are keen to learn
I started hating bjj cause of the instructor. He basically let me know, that I’m not as tough as I think I am and that I’m not gonna evolve if I don’t grapple with the others. First of all I started losing all joy in BJJ after the first 10 losses vs others and no wins, second of all they made me feel I was the new member. So fuck them and I’m definitely done with BJJ
Hey Chewy, love your videos! I’m trying to get into jiu jitzu and there’s an American Top Team in my area, how do you feel about them? any reviews?
“If you know the why, you can find the how” looks like Chewy has seen Victor Antonio.
Pointless…like what was the point of this video? Just misleading people
Chewjitsu I’m looking for a gym I plan on training two martial arts most likely bjj for a bit and then startingThai boxing as well I’m doing it partially because I’m a fan of competition in the two partially because I wanna get in shape and make a better healthier lifestyle and partially because I wanna know how to fight in depth standing and on the ground my closest gym is 30 miles away and there’s 4-8 within 6 miles of each other what could I do to choose which one I want to join and should I go to a gym for bjj and a separate one for Thai boxing thanks chewy and I also subscribed I’ve watched your videos here and there for a while now and love your content keep up the good work!!
Pretty low tier tests. On my worse day I could do at least 50 pushups in a row without stopping and run at least a 12 minute 1600M. Worse day. I recently ran a 5K in 22 Minutes. I thought it was an alright time.
Train harder scrubs.
Plus lots of Ultimate Warrior Wannabes I see at my local MMA gym are big, fat, heavy guys. Fat asses, that if you put them on a track and said, “hey fatboy run a mile for me”, they’d probably make it 2 laps before they cored. But I’ll admit they know how to take a mother fucker down and rear naked choke a meatbag into submission.
Point being, you don’t need to be an athlete to be good at MMA. It’s all about body postion, leverage and skillset.
Hi, what do you think of these two gyms https://primalmma.ca/ http://etobicokemartialarts.ca/. Mostly looking to learn some self defense
THERES 10 THOUSAND PERSONAL TRAINERS IN THE WORLD WITH 10 THOUSAND DIFFERENT OPINIONS..
ALL I HAVE TO SAY IS 40 MINUTES AFTER YOU HAVE SOMETHING TO EAT DO A
HARD 20 MINUTE WORKOUT OR LONGER IF POSSIBLE THAT WAY THE FOOD YOU JUST ATE YOUR BODY WILL USE IT AS FUEL INSTEAD OF YOUR BODY STORING IT AS FAT..
Good luck to everyone going to the gym for the first time, remember we all started where you are
You’d be surprised by how many people can only actually do 10-15 good pushups in a row so don’t feel like you are behind
Just ask for help, don’t be nervous… that’s what the video is really all about and telling.
As u see I’m a good boy and u can trust me homman
I can touch my fingers behind back only on the one side. What streches I need to practice to do it on the other side?
Is this experiences. And do and don’t because this is not advice
They may understand how us beginners feel but they surely don’t accept it.
Reading some of the comments here and I have to say, some of you seem to think that being in good shape is all about having a large muscular body. Some sports require more skill and endurance than power and huge muscles. Some people don’t want big muscles. Can they still be in good shape? Yes.
why am I here? I’ve been practicing Karate and Muay Thai since I was six…
What if I play guitar and I want my nails to be long for that?
Thoughts on 10th planet?? Looking join a gym and rain no-gi, as i find it more practical for both real life self defense situations and mma
Thank you Shane, you inspire me to workout and become fit and healthy. Thank you you dont no how much fight tips means to me
If I am an 12 year old male should I try to match the adult female chart?
I’ve been on the fence for like the past month on joining a place. But where in from we only have one jui jitsu/ kick boxing place so there’s not a lot of options. And also in most places can you wear just whatever? Or is it not common you have to wear a gi?
Needed this for personal training not being a beginner at the gym
