Great article, I was really confused on fueling but as I start training for a full I realized I needed more. I have always been a casual 3-6 mile runner, but last year decided I was going to run a half marathon which I just completed this past weekend, my own personal best training was 8:30/mile so would have considered anything at that or under a success and ended up at 1:44:59 or a 8:02/mile.Most half marathon training plans will take the runner up to 12 or 13 miles. There’s no need to do a run longer than 13 for a half.
The two weekly base maintenance runs are short runs (4 to 5 miles). These are designed to keep the weekly base miles going and to help keep the runner limber between the quality workouts. These runs are also run at.Eat high-carbohydrate foods just before and after your runs to increase and replenish the glycogen storage in your muscles. Choose healthy sources of carbohydrates, including fruits and vegetable.
So, during the months of training leading up to your half marathon (and all the time, for that matter), try your best to eat a nutrient-dense, whole food-based diet. I think you need to take some time and go to WooPep diet website to learn about diet.
The only thing with this is carbs are not bad for you. Carbs are your natural fuel sourceit can be dangerous to force your body to burn fats and ketones instead. Low-carb diets aren’t good for most people.

keeping dairy out of your diet isn’t necessarily the best. for good bone health you need to get in lots of calcium, and dairy is one of the most absorbable sources!!! especially women who are putting in high weekly mileage making them prone to stress fractures/injuries. make sure ur getting some kind of calcium even if it’s not dairy (e.g leafy greens, almonds, soy):)

A week ago, he took Fourth place in his age group in a Nationals-level 12k race. In case you are serious about marathons or other distance racing, this is actually the best training around..

Just eat a balanced diet, but certainly carb type snacks before a run. Gels never make any diff in the last 10k of a marathon, it’s all in the head.

That’s a good idea to swap out the pasta with cauli rice. I hadn’t heard that one before.
I’m a nutrition/diet student and from what I’ve learned so far, restricting carbs as an endurance athlete is harmful for your body! even on rest days you should still eat a combination of protein, carbs and fat, so your body can recover as fast as possible. Carbs are needed to fill up your glycogen storage, which is used during long runs to provide energy. That’s also why carbo-loading is actually useful for marathon runners. So if you are going to run a marathon again, please consider getting a licensed nutritionist to help with your diet. (also you don’t have to cut out desert while carbo-loading…)

I conducted 5K`s and 10K`s and half marathons and decided to take the next big step towards the full marathon, and I learned a good deal from this book. This wonderful training is a must-try..
That beetroot supplement is unlikely to give you extra energy. However, it will contain a high concentration of dietary nitrate, which is converted into nitric oxide in your body, which in turn is involved in vasodilation, thus improving blood flow. This means better oxygen delivery etc. to working muscles. I don’t know about that specific supplement, but similar things have been shown to be ergogenic for endurance exercise.
Had exactly the same experience with coffee! Gave it up over Christmas and only had 3 proper cups this year so far…feel so much better allllll the time! Just have a nice decaf every weekend now for the taste. Great vid as always:)

I am a fairly new runner and I am afraid of eating a lot and gaining weight but my body always wants a whole lot of food I run everyday for my cross country team and run hard all the time and I be confused if eating a lot of fruit and healthy food is good or eating a lot is bad definitely earned a subscriber!

what is that pill you took that coloured your water? it’s a supplement? is it natural?
I managed to finish a half marathon in 2hrs 50 minutes. Unfortunately I missed a couple hydration stops and that messed with my body and mind, this meant I did the above time rather than the 2 1/2 hours I had set as a target. Training for this was hap hazard as my work just made life extremely difficult..
My post run nutrition consists of a Drink combination of Electrolyte Carbohydrates with Amino acids which really makes a difference to my recovery. Amino acids are crucial to any sports performance and a multi mineral / vitamin with my post meal this is what works for me.
In a recent video, Katelyn Tuohy, expressed that organic food is expensive which is far from the truth. She should adopt Emma’s style of eating, “organic or not” as she embarks on her college career.
I wouldn’t recommend the supplements. The rest is excellent. This is my personal opinion. Good luck.
I have lost count of how many times i have watched the marathon video. It has inspired me to run the next marathon whenever the pandemic is over and life goes back to normal.

I’m currently in army training in high school (raiders) with a ton of cardio, I’m also vegan. So I love carbs 😉 I also find that protein powder in oatmeal is way better then a shake.
If you qualified for Boston, why did you not register to run it? Or did you and just not qualify by enough? I checked the BAA site and you are no where to be found.
Where are your carbs??? You need glycogen from carbs for energy. Also there’s a lot of fat in your diet.

Preach the rest day, Flora! I have always felt many people run too much versus what their body is comfortable with. We are all different but most of us aren’t professional athletes so I don’t think we should be pushing it to the max everyday. I generally have at least two rest days each week. Last week I had 4 rest days and went on to smash my half marathon PB on Sunday. Train right, rest right. ♂️♂️

I’m 33 weeks pregnant…in the home stretch now…and gearing up mentally to adopt a lot of your fitness and nutritional advice after baby comes. ^_^ In the meantime I’ve been focusing on switching empty carbs to things with more protein…oatmeal instead of cereal, protein bars instead of Nutella toast, things like that! The book is loaded with great guidance, ideas from all those who have run one before, what to do and also what NOT to do, and also training schedules. Highly recommend it..

I feel better all the time when I eat little carbs everyday. Like the Keto diet. Carbs make me feel depressed and gross. I still eat carbs but I don’t want to eat a lot. I know I will maybe before my half marathon. I’m training hard right now and I know I do need carbs. I think after this half marathon I am going full Keto.

I’ve found the same with coffee, that it makes me more tired. I can only have it in the evening or if I’m on a day off and don’t mind being tired.

I have an experience in running 5ks, 10k and half marathons, and now my next target would be to get another huge step to the marathon..
Why not always have fuel and if you run out use your mind to continue you on and then ur body will workout the rest

Great work on this video all while keeping it real. So many videos out there on crazy diet fads for runners. I especially like that you explained the importance of training on a glycogen depleted body. Very important for long distance runners.
Pro tip: Slice open an unpeeled banana to make a pocket. Stuff the banana with chocolate chips and peanut butter. Cook in the air fryer for about 5-7 minutes.
Hi Flora I might have mentioned I run daily #526 days so far…(and its taken me years to get to this stage), but I do eat refined carbs (too often when I panic that I need to carb load) is there any thing you can suggest that I can shop to if I need to eat more whole carbs quickly (as opposed to refined carbs)???

YOU are God’s masterpiece. God will make it less painful. He will give you strength through an undoubtedly hard time. He won’t necessarily make it a whole lot easier, but He will make it worth it. so worth it. just be patient and trust Him. love you (yes really YOUUUU!!!)
As a preparation for my first marathon, I just read and also used this marathon training program “Zοrοtοn Axy” (Google it). I was able to accomplish my goal of a sub-4 hour marathon. I followed everything with this training program and also enabled me to race confidently to get through 26.2 miles. It`s a great feeling to be able to achieve that. Committed runners need to try it also..

Hi Flora! Just a quick tip for an easier way to find routes on strava: you can use the route builder (it’s not on the app, only when you log in on strava on your laptop), click the settings button on the left side and then turn on “global heatmap” it shows you where the most popular routes are, the deeper the colour, the more people run there. I love to use it when I’m somewhere new or even at home to discover new routes I haven’t tried before. Good luck with your training, you are doing so well!

I absolutely support going make up free! My mum basically told me off for not wearing make up to prom and yet I just genuinely don’t like it, I’m a practical person and like walking and running and sweating and I just hate putting stuff on my face, even sunscreen though I will obviously wear that. I feel like a lot of girls in my class are addicted to wearing it and are really scared to go without it incase they are judged for being tired/pale even though that’s their normal face x (I’ve tried giving up caffeine but every winter when I get to school before sunrise and leave after sunset and still have to run I just need the extra boost)
I dunno as you plugged Strava perhaps you should look at some of the so called elite runners and see how few rest days they actually take. Same for good and not so good club athletes.
