Does anyone know if the watch can display heart rate, calories, date and time all on one screen?
Despite all Samsung promises YOU CANT ADD ACTIVITY WIDGETS AS TENNIS as they dont exist. So all these youtubers are liars!
Great analysis and video. After 3 months, do you see any software update concerning the accuracy of the Heartbeat sensor? I mean, are those weird spikes still there?
Can you drop pins while hiking and save he way points to return to later?
Better buy a Garmin Watch… I purchased this Casio watch in Japan but I only use Apple products which are not compatible with the Casio Watch.
Then I bought a small Samsung tablet at Costco so I could download maps etc… and connect it to the Casio…
Bottom line… I have no patience and not enough skills to spend time on this Casio watch…
I purchased the Garmin Fenix watch and find it so much user friendly and also connect straight to the satellites even if your phone lost the connections up in the mountains.
I just bought the Galaxy active 2 as my first smartwatch and I’ve got to say I am disappointed in Samsung. I also have a Galaxy s10 and thought it was weird that on the watch there is no Google maps or Google play store. Most of the decent apps on The Galaxy store have to be purchased. I like the fact that you can connect to Spotify or add your own music to the internal memory of the watch, but unfortunately not able to make playlists. It does have internet and YouTube but that doesn’t justify the price point for a watch that can’t or won’t run any Google apps even though the Samsung phones can. Also no word on the ECG sensor. Imagine if the next galaxy phone that came out had no Google app store or Google maps support? I am going to be returning both watches that I bought and waiting for one that has Google features as well. I am not hating on Samsung at all I’m just disappointed because the watch had so much potential.
Uhhhhhhhh……………… I use Polar…………………………….
Currently using the Fenix 5 Plus but fancy trying Apple Watch again since not having one since series 2. Question can I carry my phone with me and have them paired but use only the watch’s GPS or is it gonna automatically use the phones GPS since they’re connected? Can I choose? I’d like to keep my phone tucked away in my hydration pack so use the watch GPS but still get my notifications etc on my wrist
One of my pet hates about most of the bike computers is that they require a smart phone to be able to use them. If you’re like me & want something stand-alone & minimal; check out the “iGPS Sport” $40
This is cheap & tracks your rides for uploading to Strava etc with all the basic data. No navigation, but Its smaller than all of these. Battery lasts days. Been using mine for about 4 months almost every day. Very simple & fills that niche for stand-alone devices. Connecting to USB & drag/drop the file is actually way quicker than messing about with a phone app & chasing around why the BT isnt working & restarting your phone etc etc, you know all the BS we put up with to make things “easier” LOL
Its a shame Garmin did away with the Edge 20 because that was a nice compact equivalent.
Hate those cutting corner gps datas. Probably it would record a parkrun as 4.5km…
This is a case where 5G would actually help with gps accuracy i think.
I am looking to get a watch most for triathlons!!
Do you still recommend the fenix 5x or any other watch?
Thank you
I have an old Garmin edge 200 Works like a charm. Has breadcrumb gpx navigation and records (probably for days on end). Also didn’t break the bank. If I forget mine I turn on strava on my phone.
Great video long but worth the watch thanks , any maps for Australia?
the reason info doesn’t show at 9:36 is beacuse when the display goes to sleep it changes from 60Hz to 1Hz:)
Its hard to judge base on the way u dit it. Best way is wear two watches at a time one on each wrist so the watch can track accurately.
How long does the battery last on one full charged? With Running or cycling workout with the 5 series iwatch? Also with HR going?
I don’t know why, but just watching your reviews makes me feel calm and collected! I guess that’s an unexpected outcome, lol:)
I chatted this evening with a rep from Samsung because I was considering
buying the Active 2. I brought up the negative reviews about the
tracking and the HR monitor. I asked if there was an update in the
pipeline. He acknowledged that there was one. I asked if there was a
timeline and he said no. I then asked about the promised ECG not being
activated. He said they were still tweaking it. I asked if there was a
timeline for this considering that we are close to month six and it was
promised in early 2020. The reply was once again, no there none. When I
told him that because of this, I would be purchasing a Garmin device, he
replied, I am sorry about this”. End of conversation.
I have an Apple Watch 3 which I tested yesterday and last night after heard it has accurate heart rate tracking for activity. Thinking to buy an Apple Watch 5.
and it scare me because out of the blue at rest heart rate can jump from 70 to 171 and then back to 71 within 40 secs. Another example is heart rate jump from 68 to 139 in 4 sec and then back to 80 in 20 sec. I have checked around and seem many Apple Watch users have experienced this with Apple Watch 4.
May be my wrist band is loose? But that how I wear Garmin fenix 6 or polar vantage m / v. And I never have this type of problem. This makes me really concern on false alarm.
I tested the Apple Watch heart rate vs fenix 6x and found fenix has 96 peak hr and Apple 106 peak hr for my exercise.
With this jump around hr rate, I decide to not buy the Apple Watch 5 to not looking for trouble if it tell me I have heart problem false alarm. And really don’t feel comfortable to wear a watch like that which always has to verify if it is the watch or my health.
I would love to see a follow up from you to see if any of the watchOS updates fixed any of the behaviors that you encountered.
Dcrainmaker apple watch 5 or garmin fenix 6x pro.
I will use it ir hiking backpacking. Travel flying.
And main feature is i will use the watch standalone no phone.
Wich watch is good for me
Hi. If I have a Samsung watch paired with the iPhone, can I view the route on the iPhone on the map after the run? For example in endomondo app? Which app is working with both samsung and iphone?
DC rainmaker!
I just brought my Apple Watch serie 5 back, because the watch has wrist detection that don’t work with tattoos. Now both my arms are covered. You can putt off wrist detection, but you loose the fitness/activity tracking. That’s the reason I bought it in the first place.
I know a lot wrist based wearables have this problem with tattoos because of the optical heart rate sensor.
So my question is, what can I do best to track my activities/weight training? Or is the only solution a chest strap like the Polar H10.
But off corse you don’t wear a chest strap all day. Maybe you have any advice?:) that should be awesome!
Keep up the good work!
Kind regards, Yorick (btw I’m Dutch:)
That clover leaf scenario is great! I ran a similar pattern at the Dubai Marina along both sides of the Marina Promenade, taking my run back, forth, and under the bridges. The Fenix 5 lost its mind. Even by Fenix 5 standards.
Great Review!
Agh of course it’s Amsterdam. I was thinking, shieet the Americans have got European with their architecture!. Love Amsterdam, one of my favourite cities. So well planned and designed, and a great work/life balance.
Thanks for the video. I had the Galaxy Watch Active, but the synchronization with the iPhone did not work at all, so I am searching for a new watch. Does the Apple Watch have a sleep tracking function?
I’ve got a Garmin Vivofit HR watch, but since I its no competition for my Wahoo Elemnt Bolt. That thing is the business, especially paired with Komoot and Strava.
thank you very much this review was just what I was seeking!!
#GMBN I have had an Edge 130 for about two years now. Works great for all things bike. Strava live, navigation and push notifications all work perfect. I’ve found the other units too bulky for MTB. Get the 130 and you will be happy.
I’m about to take this back. My activity history suddenly disappeared!!!! Just got the thing about month ago. So tried to unpair and re pair no good. Don’t know what happened looked at it 2 days ago and all my history was gone and now at the turn of midnight yesterday disappeared too. One person said it happened to her two days ago also. Any ideas
Did you ever try to turn the “always on display” OFF from settings and see if those heart rate dips and spikes go away?
In missing outdoor device etrex/gpsmap/…
They have separate batteries.
Empty pop in New and you good to go fore 15u.
Ideaal fore bikepakking,24hrs race etc
Where is all the data/trendsget stored (app watch app and App Health on iPhone?)? I’m spoiled with Garmin connect app but finding the Garmin fenix too large not easy to read with aging eyes, etc. I want a bright display I can read while running, hiking, etc. and is reliable. Thinking about switch to Apple Watch 5
My Watch 5 will not display the heart rate unless i move my arm up to my face (the screen only shows the current time). Is there a way for it to display continuously?
You are realy good on this. I see you has one of the best reviewer on youtube, pls keep it up. U realy enjoy ur review. Pls tell me i have a series 4 each time i runing with it or walking is not reading my heart rate when is on workout mode. Does the series 5 does thesame. Or did u have same issue with the series 4? The series 4 heart rate accuracy is super accurate when i used it side by side with polar h10 chest strap.
For those who want to go off-road touring on their mountainbike with camping overnight: forget about all this. Battery is never going to last a long weekend and how are you gonna keep it juiced?
Therefore the Garmin Etrex 30X is the answer. It uses regular batteries, but of course it’s better if you use them with rechargeable (Eneloop or IKEA) batteries. Also it uses normal buttons, which are less prone to failure and also work with thick warm gloves on. It also includes the 3D compass and the barometer based altimeter. Just like the mountaineering watches for mountain guides. Another advantage is that you can use any map, like uploading the OpenFietsMap for cycling anywhere in Europe. Oh, and it’s superior on battery consumption: 2-4 days on 2 regular batteries.
Want something bigger? Enter the GPSMap 66s(t). Quite a brick on the handlebar, especially with the external antenna. But nothing beats it for reliability and durability. Also its screen is even superior to that of the Etrex. Not sure if anyone should want it this big, not even Stormy Daniels. It’s also less conservative on the batteries. Just 1-2 days.
Thank god I watched this video before making any purchase. I will be able to make a better decision. I have now an improved overall idea.
Great review. I love how comprehensive you are. Have you had a chance to test out the GPS again? I hear there was a recent update that improved it.
Always enjoy your views and approach, thank you. Great video!!!!
Ray who buys 5 sport watches a month is working out in the cheapest Kalenji T-shirt
If Apple Watch was my only option for tracking my runs. How would you make it the ultimate tracking device? Would you recommend running with a chest strap for a more accurate HR and Stryd for accurate pacing/power?
very nice review, i have a simple question: would you prefer Garmin Venu or that samsung galaxy active 2?
I am looking for a pressure gauge for my bike tires (of course) does anyone know a good one
Can you please do another test after the GPS software update?
Hi, thanks for the video, which app on my android should I use to view my workout/run/walk on a map? strava? or there is something else?
I really wanted to see the watch in action, I understand the features but wanted to see the workflow and how things actually work. Thanks for doing that.
I settle for Fitbit Versa 2 is very elegant and looks good quality. for something it is among the best (Y)
Is this HR monitor more accurate than Garmin 5 or 6? For me the Garmin 5x wrist HR has been a terrible experience. It never keeps up with the changes and only work accurate while doing something constant.
My personal choice is Apple Watch Series 5 due to its brand and I liked its design and looks.I suggest everyone Apple Watch Series 5.
I use a Garmin edge 130 MIP display…no others gps has that resolution (303 x 230)I don’t care if it is black and white…any can’t match day or night visibility.
Obviously you know absolutely nothing about fitness watches while including ape watch and samsung active. Terrible performance as a fitness trackers. You missed suunto, many garmin watches and many more. Prepare yourself better for next opinion like review bad review
Thanks for the video. Garmin Connect maps aren’t detailed enough for me. They don’t show all the paths. I may have to try Garmin Basecamp.
Excellent tutorial with tremendously informative and effective content about Best Fitness Watches in 2020. Thanks for sharing this. I loved the whole presentation of this content from start to finish. Your entire review is fantastic AND EFFECTIVE. Great job! You are great.
It seems people are not wearing the watch for best HR monitoring. Heart rate straps will always be more accurate though. Finally get to know all the features well to really enjoy the watch.
Wow amazing technology, does the Fenix 3 has the same functionality? Like adding your own course and use that for navigation? Thanks a lot for putting this video
Thanks for the tips. I’ve got one 5th aluminium 44. Love it. My fist Apple Watch. Battery life is limited, but I knew that. Great for outdoors. How did I live without with my old expensive Swiss Watch. I used Runtastic on iPhones. This is so much coooler
Have you tried to use the Apple Watch in a true race situation? I tried and it was a nightmare compared to my Garmin. Starting the Apple isn’t easy or stopping it.
Is there a way to set intervals with an alert at each change so I don’t have to keep looking the watch?
Followed you for at least 2 years. Love your thorough reviews. Keep up the good work. Thanks
What app is he using to check the heart rate data on his computer? Is this something supported by apple or is it a 3rd party app?
GPS in the wild should only be used in an emergency. Why? Because the parts of our brains responsible
for orientation are NOT being used in an intense enough way to create deep memories related to spacial awareness. Every time we use a GPS in a car or bicycle or walking we weaken our ability to form strong memories.
Is there a place for GPS? Most certainly. If you need to find an address or arrive at a destination quickly they are fantastic. However they should not be used as a replacement for
just “ Paying Attention”.
I just ordered the Watch by September 10th. Sent it back to Apple yesterday since the Battery is a bad joke. Furthermore, the sports usage is just bad. GPS accuracy for Mountainbiking and Strava is just so bad. Guess it’ll be a Garmin next time.
Biking videos are the best, I got a go pro for Christmas and am trying really hard to make my own, I would be so happy if some of you guys checked I my channel, My dream is to make videos like this!
So I’m not the only one having rest heart rate 40 beats per minutes also your’s is like mine!!
That underpass has signs that it’s not always a safe place to be.
Hello. I was wondering if it shows the pace accurately when compared with a Garmin / Apple Watch. Thanks!
Ray, is there any way to force the watch NOT to use the GPS of the phone? (turning bluetooth may do the job?) I find this just so dumb. I know the battery lasts longer if you have the phone around and you’d probably carry the phone 95% of the cases (unless you do a run for about an hour or two) but still.
If you were to buy today a watch for general fitness, best heart rate tracking, durability, what would you choose staying under about $400 all in? Not sure about Apple since they’ll have another watch coming out soon I think. I’m no great athlete, I use an Apple phone, I need to lose weight/lower my heart rate, and I tend to be hard on watches so need durability.. Thanks
I use a watch. Its a Garmin Forerunner 410. Had it for about six years now. It doesn’t have all the extras of a smart watch but works good for mountain or road rides and automatically downloads to Garmin and Strava. My only issue with it is in winter when my left wrist is exposed to the cold. I have been considering a handlebar computer but am concerned about battery life on cold winter rides.
The great explanation of video Best Fitness Watches in 2020.Thanks for sharing
I really enjoyed how much detail you used to describe each fitness tracking watch.
Was this test done before Samsungs first big update? Apparently, that was supposed to correct the GPS issues. How do you find the Samsung Active 2 for its calorie burn accuracy? I just picked one up and have found it to be fairly off.
maybe you explained but, do you have to have your phone with you, while running with samsung active 2, can it record data without being connected (such as distance,hr,calories.. )
Wearing multiple sensors cause interference within each sensor.
I like the Apple watch series 5. Its the best in category. Thanks
Hey thanks for review. I want to buy a sport watch. I ride a road bike. I actively use fitbit charge 3 an it really dissappointed me, especially its pedometer is awful. Anyway, which do you recommend me: Garmin Fenix 6, 5X Sapphire or Apple Watch 5? some smart watch features on apple watch are very useful indeed (dictation, calling someone, answer the phone calls etc). Thanks for answering, in advance.
would you still recommend buying it today over other options?
Do you ride with a bike computer? Or would you prefer a using a smart watch? Let us know in the comments below
This is the best review I’ve seen. I’m soooo pissed though. I’ve had the garmin 645 and I love it, I only use it for bike swim and run. And thought that this would be able to do just as good of a job but this was depressing. Now I live in Norman Oklahoma USA and it’s nowhere near as big or cluttered with buildings. Do you think that location can be an factor? Plus I usually turn the watch under hand so it’s directly on my pulse. Wonder if that could be a factor?
I just use my phone running stravano distractions while on the trail but all the stats when looking back on it later!
Thank you for the video. You mentioned using Garmin Connect, can you use Garmin BaseCamp? is one better than the other? are they the same thing? thank you.
Carmine Vivoactive3 is the best, otherwise good research done.
Wasted a lot of time with garmin devices in the past, now a happy wahoo user for about 2 years…touchscreens are useless in mud when wearing gloves
I get exhausted just watching you running and holding all these devices! always great reviews!!!
Please stop uploading videos in 60fps… its so unnatural:(
Any reason why the Garmin Tactix Charlie does not figure here?
Did all watches record the same distance despite the differences in how they Mapped your course?
I don’t have the map information show for my Apple Watch. Is there something I need to turn on?
#askgmbn I took my seatpost out recently and noticed mud in the seat tube, will it be ok to wash it out or would this get water into the bb
for me it only really ask me 1 time to approve for the basic stuff and never again
Thanks for the review. Can maps from South America and other continents be loaded onto this watch?
content creator reviews top 5 fitness watches products. With every inch of detail. Thanks for the content creator.
Thank you for the very accurate review! which activity profile do you think would best record a spartan race/obstacle course race?
Are you able to just open the map and have a map on your wrist without having to plot a course?
Demonstration of video is very well. it is the valuable and relevant video and reliable for all aspect. We can easily find Fitness Watches like Amazfit Bip, Apple Watch Series 5, Fitbit Versa 2, Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 and Garmin Vívoactive 3. Really, I appreciate this video.
I had been using an edge 820 but unfortunately I lost the bloody thing! So disappointed. Got to try and save for a new one now. Just need to decide what to do. Computer or watch!
Does the arm attachment come included with the Garmin 130/small computer?
nice tech. but people..make yourselves aware of the effect green light has on your blood. its not good. tape up those sensors.
First of all Nice tees. Finally got a best review of Apple Watch ⌚️ series 5. Just I brought iPhone 11 Pro Max. But thinking about Apple Watch ⌚️. Now the review is here. Appreciated buddy.
Will you please make a video on best sound bars available online in India? I am in great need.
Hello, thank you for the review. Do you think that Watch is good to improve his running skills? In my case I’m running 3 times a week around 10km for each run with an interval session once a week my goal is to reach the 20k and step by step long distance race. At the moment, I use a Fitbit ionic but the feature for the interval trainings is not that good for my point of view. Does the Apple Watch Better? Can we create a training session with a 20 min endurance jog, interval session in time or meters (200, 400, 1200) and finish with another 20 min endurance? I was considering to buy a polar vantage v but I’m also looking for the aw5, I really love it more than the vantage but is it the watch to help improve yourself I’m not sure. Also, does it feel more fragile than an other running watch? Dank u wel
great vid! I just want to ask: did the active 2 have the “high accuracy” ON for this run?
in a case of a crash, isn’t a watch just as much prone to get damaged as the bar mounted unit? also, after a whole day of riding your wrist will get tired, no matter which strap you’re gonna use these watches are quite heavy!
@dcrainmaker I would love to see an accuracy test of the active 2 now that it’s been updated!
You guys should do a ride with the watch, bar mount and phone in the back pocket to see the difference in ride distance, elevation etc… Would be cool to see a comparison.
just FYI Active 2 did a gps rework and it should be much more accurate.
Thank you for the indepth review. I’m glad I bought my Garmin 245 and didn’t wait for this. Samsung isn’t quite there yet. Between you and DesFit, I’m well informed on products prior to purchase. Thank you again.
Excellent video, very very helpful thank you so much for making this and posting. Much appreciated.
I use a Wahoo Element Bolt, works great and no touch screen so works with gloves and sweat, I like it for the heart rate monitor. Before that I always used Trailforks app with the maps downloaded on my phone. Never get lost and does not run down the battery. Has saved me in remote areas of UT where GPS does not work.
One thing you missed, the price. For example, that edge 1030 is about the price of a new bike for me, so the budget also plays a big role in buying a GPS device.
I have a garmin 130 hr bundle and a garmin watch vivomove hr
Nice sound effect @ 2:34s:)
And then another one, though not so good, here @ 14:00s:)
And then finally, a muted one here @ 14:11s 😉
Enjoy:)
that you pick is not the fitbit versa 2 as it has the word fitbit and only the elite and versa 1 have it. also it only as one button and the one you showed had 1 one one side and 2 on the other
Brilliant Review! Thanks! Can you do an open water swim (or pool swim) review of the Apple Watch 5?
best video… none of the videos on Youtube showed how this watch works….
Great video! I just got my Fenix 5x yesterday. They have really come down in price since the 5+’s came out. I don’t think I would be able to figure this thing out without your video and youtube, it just has so many features. Thank you for taking your time on this review. I also subscribed.
I’m definitely diggin’ the sleek look of samsung Galaxy Watch Active2.
Hi Ray, has Samsung sorted the heart rate software out yet on the Samsung A2? To improve accuracy and drop outs? Also any news on the ECG?
Just bought the Garmin edge 520. I’m a MTB rider. Loving the review. Not so much the 80s porno music in background though.
Apple watch and garmin. Which one are the most accurate sir?
Wow Amsterdam is not how I remember it, must be the rain. I don’t think there was a drop of it that summer.
great video I know you did the video ages ago but what would you recommend to buy for a new rider
Curious if the Apple Watch Series 5 has an actual GPS, or if it is A-GPS, where it would leverage the iPhone’s cell connection. Can’t believe it would have an acutual GPS, that only relies on sattelites.
Does anyone know if this watch has a “FIND ME” or similar feature? Just wondering if it would replace an EPIRB (emergency positioning locator radio beacon) or if I would need to buy one aswell. Thanks, in advance:)
Can i track my speed while i am running, quite an important feature to me while running
Super informative, thank you for posting! I picked up a Fenix 5X Plus in May and the Maps have been the hardest thing to understand.
Hey buddy! What about the size? Too big or enough for one guy with 1,80 tall?
These Fitness watches are the newest I’ve seen, one of these would work very well for the work I do. I am very interested in one.
Fitbit Versa 2 is my favorite and I will definitely upgrade to Garmin Vívoactive 3
Is there any way to upload the endomondo workout from the active 2 watch to actually sync to the watch? It syncs to my app, but i would like it to sync to my active calories and exercise on my watch!!
Don’t crack the glass they’re none repairable & warranty won’t cover so they try to flog you a replacement for nearly cost of new one, won’t buy anything Garmin again use Polar now, better brackets & easier to use
I have both a 130 and a 520. I use the 520 on my road bikes. When I got into mountain biking, I tried the 520 on the mountain and fatbike but it was just a bit to large and fell off a couple times while racing. The 130 has been great. Yeah it isn’t as robust with info but it is perfect for riding offroad plus it controls my bluetooth headlight and taillight. Now only if GMBN and Garmin were giving one away as I’m in the market for a 520 Plus. My current 520’s battery only lasts for around 6 hours (it’s 4 years old). I’m fully ingrained in the Garmin ecosystem. I also own a Forerunner 230 and 920xt for running and Duathlons.
Worst advice ever, just ads to garmin and not to much information. It’s like you are explaining in a rush.
Hi GMBN or anyone who can help… I am planning on getting a Garmin 130. A simple question. I don’t want my expensive phone mapping my ride via Strava in my bike bag on my rides, however, I want to leave my phone at home and do my ride by recording it from the 130. When you press finish ride on the 130 does this add to Strava?
Can I load Strava onto active2 and use standalone gps tracking for runs and rides? Open water swim?
Garmin Etrex 30x…small, robust and cheap… can you review this for mountain biking?
Would you say this watch is till worth that price tag? I’m really considering this watch for my hunts and hikes.
Hey gmbn i am in a quandry right now i am unsure if i should upgrade my suspenison on my full sus or just buy a new bike
Might be part of another review but can it record a half or full ironman? I’m comparing it to the 735xt which will record a 1/2 ironman and of course doesn’t have the bright screen. Obviously there are lots of parameters and different models, but if you kept the screen off and weren’t running music or other apps, would it last a while for the Sunday bike ride or any longer events?
I would like to be able to recommend Garmin, but after having issues with my 520 and Garmin refusing to even acknowledge that there are issues, let alone rectify them, I would advise against them. For the money you shell out for these devices you would expect them to work as advertised.
Just buy yourself a Garmin Edge 750 yes they are from 2008 but still better than this modern high tech sh!t where you need all different accounts and a cellphone connection and you don’t need al that gismo’s oh forget to mention i can use my edge 750 with gloves on can you do that with your touch screen based GPS?????
So many years and Epix is still on top. Why there is no Epix 2 with pulse cell? Love the model.
Exactly what I needed, thanks for the video!
I’m looking for a smartwatch that can both track my sport (eMTB and hiking mostly, skiing and openwater swimming would be a great plus), be a cool smart device (useful enough to not get my phone out every time and nice enough to wear it every day) without breaking the bank (I’n looking at you, Apple Watch!) but everything seems to be lacking *something*: this one and the Garmin Vivoactive 3 are the ones I like the most, but this one clearly has loads of limitations in the fitness tracking while the other has only very basic notification integration… so close, yet so far!
Hartelijk bedankt! I miss Amsterdam (used to live on a houseboat 2 years long time ago).:-)
Thanks for the comprehensive overview of the watch; just what I was looking for! Also subscribed.
Love my Fenix 3. It is bullet proof, accurate, and the battery life blows away the Apple Watch….which I also like, but just not for MTB.
Great review. I saw that SAS soldier and TV presenter, Ant Middleton, wears this watch so thought I’d check out reviews to see if it’s worth the steep price as he is sponsored by Garmin. Your review helped out a lot
I hope those boxes were empty or the computers inside got a good “workout” themselves while recording the video:-)
Just use your phone. Stop being kit mad idiots. Phone. In a case. On a quad lock mount.
Just saved me some money buying the wrong watch mate. Keep it up. Cheers
I will wait for a apple watch with microLed Technolgy than i buy one directly, one day battery life is not my style minimum must be 2 days or 3 days.
Do you have a recommendation for a really accurate GPS for mapping trails? I spend waaaaay more time building than riding and getting accurate trail maps for the Forestry and TrailForks alike would be really useful.
I use the older Garmin Edge 520. Mine doesn’t do the V02 Max or Cycle Map. The V02 Max doesn’t bother me. If I went for the Edge 520 Plus the I may use Cycle Map. I use mine on a older Garmin Out Front mount. If mine came off the mount I would still have it. As I use the included lanyard and loop it around the brake line. I am looking to get a Garmin watch to record other activities and in case I leave my computer at home or lose it. I just use it record my rides. Then upload to Garmin Connect which is synced to Strava.
How long does the Apple watch 5 take to lock onto GPS (gain GPS signal) once you start a run generally? I have a Get Fit 2 Pro and it takes about 2-3 mins to lock onto GPS until which time the watch uses steps to measure the distance
One of best review on Fenix. Very insight into every detail.
You’re a good guy. Going and doing a review in that weather. Thanks for this. The Active 2 was on my possible list but that HR monitor issue and all of the permissions. I think I will stick with my Garmin family!
FYI at beta firmware 4.19 the pop up turn notification is not working…..the distance to the turn will not change. I’ve missed a few turns on my rides because i thought the turn was still far away.
Will you please make a video on best sound bars available online in India? I am in great need.
I had a Garmin Edge 800 but it got stolen while I was in Chatel, replaced it with an Edge 810 with the insurance money and it’s been great. Done a few 80 mile + epics with it, even have a cable to connect it to my Exposure lights and use them as a battery pack. I’ve also got a really old Edge 200 that I use for commuting and that refuses to die, must be over 5 years old now and the only way you’d know is the battery doesn’t last as long as it used to. My friends have had a few of the newer Garmin GPS units and they’ve had a few issue with them, mainly random crashing mid-ride and the touchscreens not working in the wet. Most have now switched to Wahoo and I most probably will when I decide to upgrade (or the 800 dies). Sadly Garmin have a habit of having one good product cycle followed by a bad one and I think this current one is a bad one.
Phone + Runtastic Pro + Mio Link. Don’t see any reason to have any other separate device:/
Could you make comparision of vivoactive 4 and apple watch 5 and is there a change about heart rate accuracy after watchos 6.1
Thank you for this good test:)
I’m a bit of a Garmin geek I’m afraid, I have the 1030 on my road bike with the vario radar and Vector 3 pedals, I use my Fenix 5 on the mountain bike and I also have the front light which I switch between both bikes. The light is really good when used with the computer as it adjusts brightness based on speed. I might need help
I’ve both the Garmin Fenix 5x and the 130 Edge…love ’em both. 8:15 in the vid made to stop and rewind…DEAD DUCK!!!!
I think it’s “good enough” as a casual fitness tracker.
Ignoring the “Active” in its name it’s a companion device for your smartphone first and a fitness tracker second, at least that is what I’m experiencing with mine. And I think if you look at it like that it’s a pretty nice watch.
I’m a casual runner, I run my 5k in slightly over 30 minutes 2 or 3 times a week. I don’t really care if it doesn’t grab my heart rate perfectly. I don’t care if it tracks my run as 0.1km longer or shorter than it really was. I just want a general indication about my health.
And as a tech enthusiast I also wanted a good smartwatch. Before this one I had a Huawei Watch 2, I bought the Samsung Active 2 because Wear OS started to piss me off.
From that standpoint alone I am very happy with my purchase. It is a good smartwatch that works way better than the one I used to have with more features that I can’t wait to try.
Battery life is pretty impressive as well. Mine is set to the most accurate GPS tracking and continuous HR tracking. I charged it this morning, left the house at 7 am, it is now 5 pm and I’m at 81%. That is pretty cool.
So yeah, I like mine.
Garmin Vívoactive 3 is best by its features and functions with genuine price
I’m interested in the Bluetooth health watch, its got pretty good reviews
Thank you for the complete review. I just saw after I bought active2. Shame on me! Keep up the good work.
Garmin VivoActive 3, no need for a Fenix 5 for me. I only use it for GPS tracker, and connect to Strava and record my tracks, and need stopwatch and timer. All the rest I consider junk (like music etc, I cannot fit any earphones wearing my full face helmet so yeah……
im getting the garmin vivofit smart, CNET, can you please review it first for me, thanks
I use a 62s and like the button interface over the touch screen

Great video!! Just one question: Would you recommend these watch for running, mtb, swimming and skiing? Isn’t it too big for these activities? I’m not really into hiking and I don’t know if I should go for Fenix 5X or Fenix 5 sapphire edition.
PLZ! HELP ME FIGURE OUT HOW TO DISABLE THIS DAMN AUTO PAUSE. THIS IS RIDICULOUS!!!
This is useful, if you’re considering more in the premium end worth checking out dcrainmaker comparison of 520 820 and 1030.
Wadu hek that course you selected said he he ran 24 miles at 4:37 mins/mile. Did God upload that?
Galaxy active2…. Concerning to battery life during a bike trainings, let’s say 3-4 hours… how long does the battery life take to drain?? In my experience, the watch gets in the end of the training on 15% of the battery life… it sucks.. please tell me your experience… tks, John
Thanks for the information. I’m debating between the apple series 5 or maybe future 6 and Garmin 245 music.
Thanks for sharing such a good review about Best Fitness Watches. its really helpful one..
I bought a used Suunto Ambit 3 last year without really knowing much about it other than it had gps.
It’s an amazing watch and it’s easy to see when considering that it was launched in 2016 and yet is still considered amongst the better watches out there.
what would be the cheapest option to time my bikepark laps while riding alone?
cheers!
If you could only choose one watch for running and biking between these 3 watches Apple Watch 4, Polar Vantage V, or Garmin 245 used with a chest HRM. Which one would you pick?
If there not able to work without being plugged in I’ll get a wrist compass and a folding map. If I’m in an emergency situation and the battery dies, all the bells in whistles in the world will count for nothing. However if these things are solar powered sign me up. In these days and times solar power should be a mandatory requirement for all electric device’s.
How about a small Garmin handheld. Like a Oregon 650 or 700. Similar size & if you have maps loaded it can guide your around city, cycle path maps, off road, todos etc.
You usually have a GPS on you to see how fast your going I don’t see a display to show you speed!
Are these also good for finding yourself around major cities?
Too bad I don’t hike:D I wonder if the offline map is accurate…
Can someone please help me? I have Samsung galaxy watch active, but it doesn’t count kilometers when I am hiking or cycling…
amazing 5 fitness watches I really want to buy it all!! think you for sharing this tuto bro
What do u think about Nike Fuel band SE? Could any one tell me about it?
I currently have a Fitbit Ionic and I have been tempted to get the Apple Watch. I’m wondering if it’s worth it for me to do so…
One of the best reviews ever.
I like actually seeing stuff in action the way it is used in the real world.
Thank you for the time and effort you put into this.
What do you recommend? The galaxy active 2 or a garmin venu? I would want to use for running and also on the daily needs?
Hey! I need help. I don’t care about train parameters, i just want a first GPS no navigate maps, import GPX tracks, good screen size and go for trails in my MTB. What was your advice? Edge 520 Plus, Edge 530 or Edge Explore? I’m just a weekend rider. Many thanks
The software from the aw5 is updated. Is there improvement for the heart rate accuracy?
Put the watch in table and unlock the watch open heart rate monitoring then see if the watch work
Over the past few years, I’ve had several GPS watches Apple, Garmin, Polar.. and HRM’s (chest and arm). None are as accurate as advertised.
Personally I think we expect too much of GPS in small devices just think of all the various radio waves and stuff floating about today.
My most accurate combo is my trusty, but old, Garmin XT735 paired with a OH1.
Wordfitness
Thx so much for helping me decide on what I need.
Will you be covering the fitbit versa 2 more in the coming months?
Can you see the heart rate in percentage of the max heart rate in fitness?
Nice review and straight, you said something that i has been waiting reviewer to say. The heart rate sensor on on the active2. Is not realy accurate. Is shame for sumsung. To give a useless heart rate sensor and they are planining AN ECG FOR A WATCH THAT THE HR IS NOT ACCURATE, I JUST WONDER HOW FDA WILL APPROVE SUCH THING. IF THEY DO APROVE IT THEN FDA IS A JOKE
Great video again. I’ve been looking at the Garmin Fenix 5 too so this was a welcome review. Quick tip for you though… at one point you were trying to show how to use the phone app to sync the maps. You could’ve just displayed the phone on your computer since you were using a Mac. Plug your iPhone in (via USB) and run Quicktime Player. It lets you display your phone on your screen (File -> New Movie Recording) and you can then show both the Garmin website AND the phone interaction. I do this when running demos/presentations at work all the time. All the best.
Question: What if one wears the watch on the other side of the wrist? On the underside? Does the watch turn on as easily? I ask because I know lots of runners, including me, that prefer this other position because it uses less arm motion to look at the watch when running. Thanks.
Is the Samsung active 2 watch fitness is accurate and good and is the heart rate very accurate
Do you need a pc for this or can you do everything on your phone?
Hello GMBN! I’d like to know which one I should get for some 20/30mi ride with alpine terrain and a lot of off road? I was thinking about the 520 plus, or if you have any ideas about other devices?
Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 is my favorite. Everything a out this watch is fantastic from its looks and feel down to it’s functionality. Samsung did a really good job with this watch. If your on the fence about buying it go ahead and pick it up you won’t regret it.
Great video, this helped me so much as a new owner/user of the fenix 5x. Thanks again!
For those hard core bike packers, the Garmin InReach or Spot are essential piecees of kit. And they aren’t even mentioned!
Is it possible to see the heart rate of your watch on the gps computer? When you have both and you start an activity on the gps, will everything be synced in the garmin connect app?
Fitbit charge.. is the band strong enough to last few months? The older bands wear off after few months.. i think fb has missed a mark by not mentioning or adding xtra band in package so i wont be spending 150 on this one..
Looking for essentially a SatNav for the bike (off road mainly). Don’t really need all the power meter options etc. Is there anything out there?
Great video! I have a question. Do I need my phone with me when running with Endomondo on the Active 2?
Thank you for an in depth review. How would this compare to the suunto traverse alpha in terms of the gps & hiking?
Does it have programmable interval training program for runners, for example if you want to ladder intervals, yasso800s..?
Could I use one of the watches just to monitor my heartrate throughout the day? I have an afib issue and my cardiologist wants me to do this.
I purchased the Fenix 5X a few days ago to take advantage of the $150 off sale Garmin has going on right now for the Fenix line in the US. That put the price of the 5X at $449.99. It is still a lot of money but I think a great value for what it offers. It is an amazing watch with a lot of features I am figuring out. Your video has be been a great help. Thanks!
I am using the same Watch Face as you. The video shows the customization of the face at 3:59. There is a curved red line at the top of the dial and a similar curved gray line at the bottom of the dial. Do you happen to know what those two lines represent? I am thinking the red line may be related to the heart rate data but I can not till what. Sometimes it shows and sometimes not. The gray curved line is there all the time. Maybe it relates to a goal? I cannot find any documentation on it anywhere. Thanks for any help!
Thanks for the in-depth review! Would this be way too big/look ridiculous for a woman with tiny wrists? Do they make a women’s version?
Very well done video. I’m convinced on getting the 5X. Got rid of AW3 and currently using FR630. Which is a great watch, but need more for hiking and such. Already subscribed to your YT site. Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work.
Thanks dude, nice physical review you should try a gym review next.
I found your video so useful I just liked it with two accounts! Very informational, thanks.
Best review that I’ve ever witnessed on YouTube. Nobody goes in this much details using maps and different gadgets. I can imagine the hard work putin in making such an elaborate video.Hats off to you. Keep up the good work. I am subscribing to your channel.
In case of a crash I prefer not having my watch (fenix 5 plus) on my wrist, but on the bars. I’ve had my wrist broken on 3 places, just because of a watch. I’ve never had a broken gps when falling with the bike, even though I’ve had a couple of direct hits on the gps in those cases (garmin geko 201, garmin gpsmap 60csx, garmin gpsmap 62st). No specific bike options, but I use them for geocaching/walking as wel, so I need a versatile one.
When my shoulder is ok again, I will be using the fenix 5 plus in combination with speed/cadance sensor and heartrate monitor with the watch placed on the handle bars with the holder.
This review actually makes it easier for me to chose which watch to get.Thank you.
Did you have any problems playing Spotify offline on the watch. I can’t get mint to work, get a message that says its not the active playback device??
To Each their own.I honestly don’t know why Anyone would Pay for a GPS Based Watch.Maybe.001% of People Actually Need a GPS Watch.99.9999998% Of People Dont Need GPS To go to the Mall or McDonalds.
I’m a Watch Guy and although most of mine are Automatics,I think the best Digital or Gadget Watches Are G-Shocks,And my Favorite for Hiking,Climbing etc is A Suunto Core.
I think it’s a good thing if A few People Still learn to Use a Map & Compass. Its really cool to travel across 10-15 miles of Trail,Rock,Streams etc Using a Map.
Looking for a device that will locate someone in the wilderness. For example, if someone gets injured and is unconscious. Is there a device they can wear to find them without them sending an SOS.
Does endomondo app give audio feedback in this smartwatch like it does in the phone? Can this watch be connected to bluetooth sports earphones?
Quick #Question: Is it possible to directly link any particular #eBike brand (Motor or Bike manufacture) directly to a Garmin device, to collect and record actual data for things such as power output and cadence, directly from the bike itself saving having to add lots of additional (and expensive) optional extras to, what is often already a very expensive, bike computer/ GPS sports watch/ smart watch… I know a few bike brands can now connect directly to a phone via Bluetooth, so just wondered if the could connect directly to a watch/ computer by Bluetooth also? If so, could you state which eBike/ motor brands can and what computers/ watches are compatible? Many thanks in advance and thanks for the excellent by videos and content, I love your channel #Inspired to get back into cycling and get fit, whilst exploring the outdoors on my doorstep
Helped me a lot to buy fitness watches suitable fit Thank you
What would it be better the Garmin forerunner 245 music or this Samsung watch active 2. I love running outdoors and working out as well as biking. What I like most of the Samsung is being able to see the workouts but I believe the 245 gives you better running charts and analysis and a more accurate HR and GPS. What would you recommend?
Owning both; an Apple Watch OLED is amazing yet tricky in the sun, the Fenix 5X is mind blowing beautiful in the sun yet average indoors. The Fenix 5X’s display is build for the outdoors and you can tell first time wearing it, also way more rugged then an Apple Watch. As the author of this video mentions; both have different purposes so choose wisely:) I love my Fenix 5X!
for someone like me that has to take a bunch of berzerkadryl every day just to get by… this video was much easier to follow than most. thanks Haz!
Great thoroughness and you’re my go to for fitness reviews. However, “When I went to bed it still said 22 hours of battery life left. When I woke up some, you know, 4 hours later it was dead. So that’s kind of a bit of a bummer.” I’d say it that happens, it really invalidates the product.
Can i just point out how much he hits the boxes and bashes them about lol
You should compare the heart rate with chest monitor isn’t?
Runtastic Mountainbike Pro on my phone with a bluetooth heart rate monitor strap. The open cycle map (OCM) is great for MTB riding.
Finally i found someone who makes comparison and details. I’m tired of switching watches. I used to use Fitbit but then realized it’s way off sometimes so I choose active2 and now thinking to get the new garmin venu. I’m a gym guy so i found the samsung to have more workout. What do u think? And your right, first couple minutes in running heart rate in samsung very missy.
May I know if there’s menu for hiking (like altitude reader)?
Got one yesterday and it’s not detecting captian work outs like jumping jack or lunges. Any idea what I’m doing wrong?
Very nice! Having one since last July, I totally agree with what was stated on the video.
GPS smoothing is okay if the lap splits and total distance is accurate. Did they have any differences in recorded distances?
This was by far the most useful Fenix 5 video I’ve come across. I’ve been researching this watch like mad and most other videos have been general feature reviews. This was real time experience with it and I’m sold.
Can we make call und reiceve incoming calls directly from the any galaxy watch 2?.
I just bought a watch after watching this add, now i have to cancel it because you talk complete shit, the Garmin Fenix 5 does not have mapping on it you first-class cock. get facts straight you fucking mong
Thanks for the video. I’m happy with recording rides on my Vivoactive 3 music, but would like to have a screen on my handlebar for checking my cadence and for navigation to get flow on trails rather than pulling out my phone.
Been considering the new Garmin Edge Explore (smaller than the Edge 1030), the Edge 520 plus and the Wahoo elemnt bolt.
I don’t need to Strava live segments, power meter compatibility or even turn by navigation (does that even work on forest trails?)
I do half-day explorations on mtb or gravel bike, and commute with several different route options.
Which would you recommend and why?
Anyone faced the inaccuracy of distance & pace while using workout default app for running (while connect with iphone). It is still correct if i disconnect the apple watch with my iphone (Apple watch series 5 vs iphone xr)
How can you activate gps tracking on active 2 for workouts. On my watch is not activated.
How did you make such a smart watch look so dumb….. HAHA, just kidding, actually great review. Very informative. Thank you for doing such a great job.
I wonder if there’s a way he can do kind of an update. Since there have been updates and improvements to the battery and tracking as well as GPS
Nice review! Do you have a video on how to get the music to work on your watch?
It isn’t true that the apple watch has battery life as among its strengths.
Great breakdown but as a Gear S3 Frontier owner, I think you may have not had the Active 2 in “high accuracy” mode. Once I switched the location to high accuracy mode, the tracking was WAY better. It does take a huge hit on the battery life but if you are a serious runner who values accuracy, it’s worth it.
Why NO Blood Pressure Monitor Watches Around Surely BP IS A Major Factor of Fitness?
Thanks for the honest and real in-depth review. Majority of the big hit reviews on the Fenix series are so heavily sponsor driven that it just oozes out in the video.
wow the edge is not cheep but he keeps saying it is. $300 Australian is not cheep
how do you log on to your computer and your cell to see your work outs?
Side note: Did anyone else see that person cycling with an umbrella
Might actually get one these, was easy to understand all the different features and which is best for my needs.
haha:D are you kidding… No. The best fitness watches: Garmin Fenix 5 or 6. There is nothing else.
Straight off your affecting the accuracy. Apple says in the user docs you should allow your arm to swing freely whilst walking / running, but you keep holding your camera up
Sold my AW4 due to battery life. Looking at 5x due to recent price drops. Cool to see areas I recognize. Used to live in Newport Beach. Just recently took kids to Moro Canyon. Thank you.
Assuming this guy is right about the heart rate and always on display trade off. What the hell possessed Apple to think that was worth it and more important to us? I was set and sold to get Series 5 but this is the second video I’ve watched with evidence regarding this issue. I would disable the always on display if I had gotten the 5 but looks like I’ll be going with the 4. I always like the latest and greatest tech so this will be an interesting change for me. Good news is it’ll be cheaper. LoL
.I wanted to use this medium to alert the bike community about MAGELLAN / MIO CYCLO in its entire line, if they buy that device and leave outside the area of their map, they CANNOT follow a track, nor use STRAVA LIVE even paying for example in SOUTH AMERICA where there are no maps, the device is locked to follow a WIKILOC track for example, which they do not clarify anywhere, they even cheat saying they use OpenStreetMaps use it but no one but them can use those maps that are in the public domain. Already exhausted all means and it seems that they are not willing to solve the problem.
Regards, Mario Camps
What watch would you recommend to sync with the polar h10? I want to look at the watch when I’m working out so that I can do HIIT’s.
Amazing videos DC Rainmaker….. would you recommend the venu over the apple watch 5 from a sensor accuracy perspective?
Do you live in Holland? Great video I’m really thinking of getting an active watch 2 and sell my Samsung galaxy watch 46mm.
SUUNTO is dumping its Movescount site for a phone app. Do not know any more how to comorftly design a route on a bloody 5 inches phone screen. I am seriously thinking going for garmin…
This watch is great! I never hiked or ran before it, I bought it for biking and fitness. But it motivated me to start, and I don’t regret it. I love running and turning in random directions and just ending up in a random place, then I use the track me feature so it will make a course back home. I live near mountains and parks to so it’s pretty cool seeing all the trails people do most. Definitely a lifestyle changer. Love it.
I like the Samsung Galaxy Watch Active2 because it has great performance and looks so good in any occasion.
Absolutely loved the review and specially the guide. Just ordered mine and so excited for it. Will refer back to this video once I get mine. Thanks!
Have you been able to use the Samsung watch 2 to track open water swim to use for triathlon training?
Smartphone is personally my favorite, and can everything. Don`t need any garmin or whatever..
The Mapmyrun app is actually pretty accurate. I compared it to my 4runner Garmin and it was almost identical.
Best use and review of the garment Fenix 5x watch…thank u for posting
Excellent review! I just have a few questions: I was looking at a used one ebay and was wondering how well the battery holds up over time? Also, can you download all the maps and stuff from your phone? I’m just wondering how practical it would be on something like a thru-hike?
Go for the 520 or the 820 if you are using a power meter. The 130 is in the back of the drawer cause of that.
Not sure what pissed me off the most the whole min of advertising with WIX or the gosh darn wind….
I love this watch active 2, it works great, everything about is is great,,,,except the EUG ( ekg ) still isn’t ready yet even though the hardware is in the watch,,that’s the only dowen fall so far
#askgmbn I’m always up for a mtb ride up the local but all my mates will think of some excuse as to why not to go, do u have any ways to persuade them to ride more often
Thought GPS battery life is 20 hours. You’ve only been getting 12 hours?
But when the battery goes bad, Garmin says there’s no replacement so they’re implying that you just have to throw it away after 5 6 years of use.
Anyone who goes to this extent must see a psychologist
We as human beings weren’t built to exercise and read every vital signs about our health
People who exercise excessive and who doesn’t still lives to 80s
There is no proof exercising hard makes you live longer
But it does improve your life style that’s for sure
If I were just looking for the maps/GPS for hiking what watch would you recommend instead of the Fenix 5x?
How weird. I searched for bike computers on YouTube as yesterday I was annoyed constantly rummaging in my pocket for my nearly flat phone every 5 minutes, trying not to get lost in the New Forest. I ended up coming out not quite where I intended on to Beaulieu Road at nearly midnight. It says Beaulieu Road on the picture of that 520 Plus on it’s box?!?! WTF? It’s a sign from the heavens I should buy it!
The main thing you can’t attach is a power meter. But you can add hr & cadence, and the god takes care of speed.
I will be using a Stryd for my pace and distance but having trouble deciding on a watch. Does the Active 2 play well with the Stryd? Are the buttons on the watch interval friendly? Thanks.
Is there a way to hook up a solar panel (that I would wear) directly to the watch during hike? Seems like the USB port is not on the side, so I wouldn’t be able to do it, right?
The Fitbit Versa 2 has great battery life. Also, like its design
Awesome video the way it reviews all best 5 models of fitness watches is really very useful. The technical details alongside with price comparison helped me to decide the best one for my need.
Thank you so much for your video. I am willing to buy one just because of your review. Cheers from Brazil.
Not famous for reliability, yet expensive as military spec, not liking this price bracket from any manufacturer
If I do a swimming workout, how do i get the water out. Does it tell me to shake it or does it play a sound?
I chose the wahoo elemnt. No complaints about it! I’m sure garmin is awesome though
No computer I just plan it out if I’m going out some where, than my normal trail’s. I live in Utah so I have a wide range of trails at my disposal.
Man I just picked up one of these on Amazon for a really good price ( 5X not the plus ) and my Alarm is Very Weak is this normal? I can’t imagine anyone could wake to this alarm.
Great video! I’m a hunter really interested in this watch, but in my gps I would really like to have private property boundaries which the garmin huntview maps has. Do you know if it’s possible to get that map on this watch?
I really like the in-dept testing of these watches. Really informative and good review.
I guess for general gym goer and casual runner Samsung/Apple/Fitbit watches are good enough? But if you really want more accurate metrics have to go with Polar/Garmin etc. I found weight/HIIT training to throw off these watches completely. I have the OH1 and tested with the Fitbit Ionic for a Strength training class. The OH1 came back with 300cal while the Fitbit was a whooping 600cal burned. I think if you are keeping track of calories/eating this can be really bad thinking you burned 600 when in reality it was around 300.
Honor watch magic 2?? Not on the list even though it has 2 WEEK battery life pretty much the same features as the others and more such as 2GB of storage set aside for mp3 music files which sounds pretty good on my sony Bluetooth headphones and you don’t need to carry your phone…and it has a huge and beautiful bright screen And it cost £132 on amazon… Five stars all year long… And i didn’t need to be bribed for an honest review..
When I heard the ‘Meerkoet’, I realized that you are in the Netherlands.
Did any of the software updates help the heart rate accuracy?
Do you know a way to share my Samsung watch activity information with my friends who have Apple watch??
Samsung released an update that fixed the GPS & heart rate monitor issues. You may want to install the update and then test out the accuracy again.
I like to hike and fish. Is it possible to mark your vehicle and go fish for the day and then navigate back to your vehicle? Is there a cheaper version that would fit my needs? Often times I don’t have a specific route or place I want to go for a day of fishing and I don’t want to carry a larger gps. Thanks for all your reviews
Can you download offline maps for hikes into the wilderness when there is no service?
You are definitely correct about using Strava on your mobile phone compared to a dedicated GPS unit like these Garmin units. I’ve sworn I’ve ridden a trail faster than my PB but Strava said it was a few seconds slower. Definitely not consistent.
Any update from Apple regarding HR? I’m wanting to upgrade my AW3, but not sure if I should stick with Apple or just go for a garmin.
Can I export run info from garmin computers to some standard file (not some third party nonsence like strava) on linux?
What’s more ironic than Ironman ironing?
DCRainmaker “making” a video in the “rain”.
I think that’s the first time I’ve ever seen someone using an umbrella while cycling
Thanks for the great review but please consider re-recording the audio without the wind and maybe get a wind cover for your mic
Ugh, I wish “every map you could ever want” was true. The ONLY map I want on a watch is the NatGeo Trails Illustrated base map:(
Apple Watch isn’t an outdoor instrument? Could you explain why?
I have been using Samsung series watches since 2014. Trust me, they are not good at sports tracking. Gear Sport is the worst of all their portfolio. The HRM of Samsung Watches just stops working during a workout and would never appear till the end of workout. GPS tracking goes terrible time to time too. Bugs, Bugs, Bugs everywhere. I dont know how they managed to sell crappy products in the market and people remain silent about their issues. Samsung is the dumbest company in terms of fitness tracking that releases products without testing properly, cheat customers. They deceive people by making visually attractive products but functionally incompetent. Do not buy a Samsung if fitness tracking is your top priority.
GARMIN watches are way more reliable, productive and accurate for sports tracking. Next comes APPLE, though not as good as GARMIN still much closer in sports tracking.
I’m thinking of a GPS watch for convenience, but let’s be fair, 0:37 implies a phone is no good without a signal. But it will always receive the same GPS signal a watch can. And you can load maps on it. You don’t need a signal for that.
Good review. Was hoping you’d end up with a 5X so I could watch your review. Really considering this watch as a supplement to my Explorer+ and iphone for hiking/ backpacking. From what I understand, this also interfaces with Garmin’s Tempe sensor which is something I’m interested in. Probably overkill for what I need, but buying things that are just a bit more than what I need has worked well for me so far.
Excellent Video: love how you didn’t include any wear os watch. Because I agree they suck at everything (watch as well as fitness) and very boldly Apple Watch at no. 4. That’s the honesty viewer truly appreciates. Keep up the good work I have subscribed. Will watch out for more
I MTB at least every weekend and have got king of the mountains on my riding Buddy’s watch what do you recommend a compact computer or a watch?
Mine are the same as yours. Broadly learned most of usage. But there are more features I need to master. Love the heart monitor, ECG, compas, maps, astronomy etc
What an AMAZING, informative video! Thanks for all the work you put into it. I just bought a Fenix 5X and loving it!
Using it mostly for fitness but the maps and navigation are an added bonus. Also just picked up the Dual HR sensor.
Keep up the good work and you have a new subscriber.
Do not buy any of these devices for navigation. These are old smartphones repackaged with custom software. It would not be half as bad, if the used hardware was not 5+ years old and on-device reroute calculations would take literally ages. Buy a cheap smartphone, attach it and use one of the many good navigation apps. You will save a lot of money and at the same time you will have way better performance than even Garmin’s high-end model.
awesome review, thanks. Amazon has these on sale now for $299.99. Can you put a link here so i can click on it and help you monetize this excellent review? Thanks!
Thank you for such a comprehensive review! One question can you set one of the hiking fields to display elevation gain? Another question-if you load a route onto the watch, are you able to see the elevation profile, and will it show you where you currently are on that profile? I’ve got lots of ups and downs on my hikes, and it would be very useful for me to see the climbs up ahead. Thank you!
For me, the Fitbit Versa 2 had a nice balance between Smart and Fitness functionalities. The Battery Life is Superb, the wide array of clock faces (You can even use pictures you’ve taken on your phone to use as your Watch Background, amazing!), a nice and mostly consistent tracking of Sleep, HR, and Steps/Calories, along with Voice Activated functionality at a $200 price is just a bargain! So to go from my 4 year old Fitbit Blaze to this Versa 2 is by far an amazing upgrade!
So please correct me if I’m wrong, I saw the black steel got turn to white the color seems the quality is not good
Iv’e gone from the Garmin 520, to the Wahoo Elemnt Bolt, I liked the Garmin but the menu functionality was clunky and frustrating.
Hey Neal, what sat nav would you choose. I’m looking at buying one.
530 or 830 possibly, your thoughts or anyone else’s would be cool.

nice video; already liked and subbed.
What’s your opinion on Huawei Watch GT 2?
My Apple watch 4 is fine for day to day easy runs. But my Coros comes out on the weekend for the serious stuff. Great review as always:-)
Great in depth, practical, unbiased review that’s not competitor focused or any of the other garbage you see when looking up tech. This was really insightful and I really appreciate you taking the time to produce this video for us.
Happy New Year!
Great review! For working out, do you prefer Strava or Samsung Health?
If you record your ride on the watch to get your heart rate etc, and use the computer to direct you on the same ride,
Q1) will the two recordings show up separately on Garmin Connect?
Q2) If they do, are you able to sync them together if you wanted?
Can upload data to Nike+ apps and is it functioning for hiking?
For Brazilian viewers, you can use Open Street Maps ( converted to.img format) or just place Tracksource.org.br maps and ir works fine! Para os Brasileiros vendo este video, você pode usar mapas do Open Street Maps convertidos para o formato.img da Garmin ou os mapas do projeto Tracksource diretamente.
